In 1981, Princess Diana attended a polo match. So far, so par for the course. At this particular polo match, though, the Princess of Wales opted for a very youthful spring look consisting of butter-yellow—OMG, did Diana start that trend 40 years early?—denim overalls layered over a floral bib shirt. Of course, being Diana, she edge-ified the look with a pair of classic espadrille wedges in raspberry red, adding height, dimension, and a touch of daring. Frankly, those shoes were a natural pick for this particular outfit.

The princess further accessorized with cool-girl oversize pilot sunglasses, simple chunky gold hoop earrings, and a stunning quilted, floral, rectangular bag by French label Souleiado, which—surprise!—you can actually still buy today. I'm a Gen Z fashion person, but I remember the 2010s fashion era vividly. I used to wear rompers as a kid in the early aughts and moved onto its cooler counterpart in my teens, the jumpsuit. I'm talking about the auto shop–inspired ones with the little patch on the chest. I thought they were so cool at the time, as did everyone else, but people eventually phased them out and moved on to the next trend.

Perhaps it's the fact that denim overalls are a combination of just about every trending TikTok aesthetic from the past 12 months (see cottagecore, grunge, VSCO girl, etc.), but they also score highly for their sheer laziness. Not long after, I noted the silhouette on the runway during New York Fashion Week, first at Brandon Maxwell and later at Coach and Tibi. By the time fashion month was over, it was already too late to get ahead of the trend. It was already here, on everyone from model Elsa Hosk to French influencer and recent Mango collaborator Camille Charrière.

Welcome to Weekday Wardrobe, a series in which one Who What Wear editor or staffer will snap a pic of the outfits they wear from Monday to Friday. We'll break down where you can shop it all to inspire your own everyday style, no matter what's on your weekly agenda.

After living in California for nearly seven years, I've finally stopped rolling my eyes at friends complaining about the heat on an 80-degree day. In my defense, I grew up in Arizona where hot takes on a whole new meaning. I'm talking summer afternoons that are upwards of 110 degrees, with lows only dipping into the 90s. It's just as intense as it sounds. (At least there's no humidity, though!).

Naturally, I was forced to learn how to dress for these ultra-hot days, regardless of whether or not I actually ventured outdoors. Now, there are five specific outfits I rely on any time it's over 90 degrees outside (like it was all last week). The key is to focus on lightweight materials, like linen and cotton, and generally just opting for as few layers as possible. It also helps if you avoid daydreaming about cozy fall weather—that will be here soon enough.

Monday

Jeans are absolutely out of the question when it's really hot outside, but I can get behind denim shorts, especially pairs that are at least 90% cotton. Here I paired my shorts with an eyelet crop top that's polished enough for all of the back-to-back video meetings I had this day. Oh, and that bag—which by the way gets compliments every time I wear it—is on sale right now for $49. You know what to do.

Tuesday

Say it with me, "Linen is my best friend in the heat." Shorts, overalls (see below), dresses, tops—you name it, and I want it in linen. I didn't have any meetings this day (shocking), so I went really casual with linen shorts and my favorite white ribbed tank. I accessorized with some layered necklaces and my two new favorite Amazon finds, this hat and these white sneakers.

Wednesday

A minidress is a no brainer for warm days. I wore this pastel one at the end of my workday and then headed out to an outdoor socially distanced dinner (with my pastel mini bag, too!). And no, I did not remember to snap an Instagram picnic photo, sadly.

Thursday

Yes, more linen, but don't say I didn't warn you. I've gotten more use out of these linen overalls this summer than anything else in my closet, except for the square-toe sandals also pictured here. I highly recommend pairing looser overall styles like this with a bodysuit so you don't have to awkwardly reach down the sides to tug in your tank. Been there, done that.

Friday

I take summer Fridays very seriously, whenever possible. That means wearing my pajamas until 2 p.m. when I promptly throw on a bikini and head to the beach. Long sleeves are almost always out of the question between May and August, but a linen one acts as a great bikini cover-up, so I sometimes make the exception. Waterproof slides, a straw hat, and some jewelry make this more of a look, which I'm always into.

We get that it can be hard to keep up with whether or not overalls are cool. People don't talk about them often, and you don't see them on the runway or on the street style scene much. Below, you'll find our shopping shortlist: We're thinking red, white, and blue with just a hint of the '90s. (Can we all just agree now that the '90s were the heyday of both Americana style and Friends-era summer fashion? Great.)

This week, I caught up with Francis Lola to make some holiday-related puns (she's one of us) and talk low-key Fourth of July outfit ideas. Her qualifications? That flawless, eternally-off-duty look (that's earned her 300k+ style stalkers), her covetable collection of accessories (shop that oversize basket bag here), and the handy fact that she already has her Independence Day outfit picked out.

Francis's trademark casual-cool style is perfectly teamed with the kind of plans we can get on board with. "The Fourth of July is always crazy everywhere, I prefer to avoid crowds and lines—I'll be at my place cooking up some barbecue, making fresh guac, and getting (fireworks) lit with my favorite people." As for her look? It's really just a slight "Go USA!" take on her standard summer uniform of crop tops, shorts, and sneakers. Francis is particularly feeling what she calls "that '90s baby tank," to which we say: add to cart.

Important: Francis's fave racerback tank also comes in black. (Pretty sure Rachel Greene wore this circa Season 2. Please DM us evidence if you happen to find it.)

Tell me this tank isn't simultaneously something you possibly wore as a child, and also something you'll most definitely wear in the future.

It's totally okay if you want to spend your holiday celebrating Baywatch, one of the finest American-made television shows to ever grace our screens. And do not feel bad about dressing accordingly.

Also, did you notice that somewhere along the way, one-pieces went from novelty item to wardrobe staple? 

Okay, they may call it the Canadian tuxedo, but we'd argue it's un-American to miss an opportunity for double denim. Layer accordingly.

A big fat yes to tie-front tanks. (Worth noting that this also comes in red.)

You know those brightly colored (or maybe pastel, or maybe white) wide-leg trousers that came with the spring suit you bought not so long ago? Wear this with those pants.

Honestly, Fourth of July menus usually call for elastic-waist shorts. Be prepared.

Pick denim that's really perfect in that "throw them on over your bikini, add elevated accessories, maybe you're in a girl band" kind of way.

FYI, Francis is all about the light-wash denim shorts. Belt them with a T-shirt for maximum '90s vibes (and a nod to this Western trend we're really getting on board with).

We'd make a case for these all-American, light, bright, Pepsi commercial–worthy jeans, but they're making a pretty good case for themselves.

Oh, and this off-the-shoulder top is the perfect topper to all denim. Always. Add lawn-friendly red shoes as required.

If you were thinking, Man, I really liked that little American flag tank, but I'm also really on board with the idea of wearing a onesie that will stay perfectly tucked from my high-waist denim shorts, this one's for you. (As if we'd ever make you choose between these two perfect things.)

When we were kids, we were rarely seen not wearing overalls. At the time, we most likely paired the one favorite with a cropped tee and our favorite beat-up Converse sneakers before running out the door. While we might have taken a little break from the childhood wardrobe essential, we’ve quickly come to realize that not that much has changed. Upon rediscovering the retro trend, we officially can’t get enough.

We still love wearing our overalls with a boxy white tee, but we have invented new and fun ways to make it our own (and in a more elegant and adult way). We’re slipping sleeker bodysuits underneath for a more tailored feel, having fun with color by pairing our distressed styles with bright vintage tees, and even fashioning an intentional one-strap look by unfastening one side at the shoulder. Consider it the sartorial equivalent of the “woke up like this” look.

In denim, chino, cotton, and more, we’ve already begun to re-create the collection of overalls we had as children and are so excited to try them out that we can’t decide which look to try on first. From sophisticated to sporty and everything in between, here are our favorite ways to style overalls in the summer.

Go super casual with a graphic tee underneath. Keep the low-key vibe going strong by slipping into low-top sneakers to finish off the look.

With wide-leg white overalls, have a bit of fun with color. Play up your favorite brights with a red top, sneakers, and a similarly toned bag.

Overalls don’t have to mean pants. In fact, we’re loving overall dresses just as much as their two-legged counterpart this summer.

If you’re looking for something simple, seek an overall shape that’s more covered than the rest so you can style them without anything at all underneath.

Go high-low with your overall look by styling the wardrobe favorite with a casual graphic tee and sneakers but finishing it off with a lust-worthy leather bag.

Opt for overalls that have more coverage on top and keep it high-fashion with statement boots or heels. Top the whole look with a lightweight coat for an added tailored appeal.

With a base like denim, it’s fun to mix and match prints. Amp up your overall look with a brightly colored top underneath, but ground the whole look with classic white sneakers on your feet.

Go tonal with a black-and-white combination. Keep it classic with a slimmer overall silhouette and a slightly boxy shirt underneath.

By now, you probably are well aware of the fact that overalls, a classic '90s staple, have found their way back into the street style scene. But it's important to note that this one-and-done denim trend is not just for kids, nor is it only for women. Enter Chris Pine, who, as Vogue just pointed out, is making a strong case that "overalls for men are happening, big time."
