It's sad, I know, but as much as we'd like the 2026 Winter Olympics to go on forever, filling every gap in our days with adrenaline, this year's Games are unfortunately coming to a close. By February 22, everyone will be clearing out of Northern Italy, heading back to their respective countries, hopefully with a medal or two in hand. But before the festivities officially end, I thought it would be fun to do a little recap, not of the actual sporting events but of the fashion moments that happened alongside them. After all, as much as I love watching curling, figure skating, hockey, and skiing, I also appreciate a good outfit, and there were plenty of those to go around in Milan and Cortina these last two weeks—starting on day one during the Opening Ceremony.

Vittoria Ceretti's Opening Ceremony Tribute to Giorgio Armani

As part of a stunning tribute to the late Italian designer Giorgio Armani, who sadly passed away at the age of 91 in September 2025, Italian supermodel Vittoria Ceretti carried her country's flag during the Opening Ceremony of the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics at San Siro Stadium. For the occasion, she wore a custom Armani Privé gown in all white, with long sleeves and a high neck.

Deanna Stellato-Dudek's Oscar de la Renta Short Program Costume

There's been a significant amount of buzz surrounding Canadian figure skater Deanna Stellato-Dudek and her costumes, which were custom-designed by none other than the house of Oscar de la Renta. Specifically, Stellato-Dudek had two costumes made by the brand, one red and one gold. According to Skate Canada, this collaboration was made possible by Amanda Desmarais, a Skate Canada board member and frequent Oscar de la Renta shopper. She reached out to the brand for Stellato-Dudek, and after a long wait, they agreed to partner with the skater for the 2025/2026 season, including the 2026 Winter Games.

Her short program dress is hand-beaded with cap sleeves and a mock neckline. It features a gold pattern that almost looks like scales that shimmer when she's on the ice. For her free skate costume, the brand designed a bright-red, one-shoulder frock that was meant to mimic Stellato-Dudek's "fearless approach to skating," according to Skate Canada.

Madison Chock's Updated Matador Costume

Madison Chock isn't just a figure skater with multiple Olympic medals and a record number of national titles under her belt. She's also a costume designer, both for herself and her husband slash skating partner, Evan Bates, as well as others, including Team Georgia, Team Spain, and Team Australia. For the 2026 Winter Games, she made subtle but profound tweaks to both their free dance and rhythm dance ensembles, with the free dance update, in particular, garnering much acclaim. The skirt, which she added red accents to, was especially noteworthy. "We feel the addition of red really suits the story and characters we have created, and more warmth and fiery passion are reflected in our characters and choreography as the beast and the matador," she told Who What Wear ahead of the Games.

Amal Clooney Wearing Balmain in Milan

Early on in the Games, part-time Italian residents George and Amal Clooney (the couple owns and often lives in Villa Oleandra, located in Lake Como) attended the Omega House opening night, with the latter donning a stunning black, strapless gown by Balmain, from the French brand's F/W 02 Haute Couture collection. With the ruffled dress, she donned black pumps and a matching clutch, keeping things elegant and sophisticated, just like her surroundings in Milan.

Ilia Malinin's Short Program Costume by Ito Satomi

Fans of retired Japanese skater Yuzuru Hanyu's costumes will be happy to find out that the designer behind them, Ito Satomi, returned to the rink for the 2026 Winter Games, this time designing costumes for the "quad god," otherwise known as American figure skater Ilia Malinin. People especially loved Malinin's short program costume, The Lost Crown, with its fantastical aesthetic and deep connection to his routine. The other costume, A Voice, was just as detailed and intentional.

The Carlson Sisters Take On the Winter Games With Ralph Lauren

Ahead of the Opening Ceremony, Team USA's official outfitter, Ralph Lauren, hosted an event at Palazzo Ralph Lauren in Milan, inviting friends of the brand to celebrate the momentous occasion before them. Two such guests were Devon Lee Carlson and Sydney Carlson, who attended the evening's festivities wearing matching black looks, Devon Lee donning a satin car coat, jeans, and black pumps, and her sister choosing an embroidered jacket, black trousers, and leather boots. Both carried Ralph Lauren handbags.

On Kylie Jenner: Custom Oscar de la Renta

Congratulations are in order for Naomi Watts and Billy Crudup, who used their weekend wisely by getting hitched at city hall in New York City. The couple—who played husband and wife on the Netflix series Gypsy and debuted their relationship on the red carpet at the Screen Actors Guild Awards last year—kept their wedding pretty low-key and casual, with Watts confirming the news of their nuptials on her Instagram with a single photo on the steps of the courthouse and the caption, "Hitched!" 

In the photo and more that were later released by the actress's longtime stylist Jeanann Williams, Watts's wedding dress can be seen from all angles. For the occasion, she resisted the urge to wear something already in her closet and instead chose an Oscar de la Renta design that is both risqué given the allover sheerness of the dress—a trend that's gained serious momentum in recent years—and utterly elegant. "Thanks for talking me into going beyond my own closet and sending me the gorgeous dress," Watts commented on Williams's congratulatory post, the caption on which read, "Love is just a word until someone comes along and gives it meaning - Paulo Coelho. I’m so happy you found your person Nai. Love Conquers All. Congratulations Naomi and Billy." 

With her sheer gown, Watts added a pair of Gianvito Rossi gold heels, an Anita Ko necklace, and other jewelry by Briony Raymond. If one thing was made clear in 2021, it's that everyone—and we mean everyone—is obsessed with cutouts. Kim Kardashian wore them in the Vatican City (despite the location's strict dress code), while her sister Kendall Jenner wore them to celebrate her best friend Lauren Perez's wedding. And those are just the two that immediately come to mind. Perhaps the only person we haven't seen don the peekaboo trend is Meghan Markle—until now. It's true. In a sneak peek of her surprise appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, which will air on Thursday, Markle can be seen wearing a white, long-sleeved blouse that features balloon sleeves and delicate palm-shaped cutouts. Next, Nine Outfits Featuring Low-Rise Jeans That Will Make the Throwback Style Less Scary

On a balmy August night in New York City, the fashion set, ballet devotees, and flower fanatics emerged for a special pop-up event. Of course, the city is an invariable playground of surprise happenings, especially around New York Fashion Week, but none hold a candle to the magic conjured up by the supremely stylish Laura Kim. As the founder of Monse and co-creative director of Oscar de la Renta for the past six years, she’s been at the forefront of the fashion industry for quite some time. Unlike some industry leaders, Kim has an uncanny ability to grow with the times. She has not only created some of the most avant-garde collections and made us want to adopt trends like cutouts, but she has also been a vocal proponent of speaking up against the rising hate crimes against the AAPI community and advocating for the performing arts industry as it continues to grapple with the pandemic. 

It only makes sense that her most recent endeavor—a partnership with Fleuriste St-Germain and James Whiteside, principal dancer and choreographer of the American Ballet Theater, to create a flower-inspired cocktail lounge—would be intriguing. After all, how many designers can make florals truly groundbreaking? Ahead, Kim speaks about her most recent pop-up, how the pandemic has changed her relationship with fashion, and the inspiration behind her F/W 21 collections (that you can shop now). If your infatuation with Kim’s work wasn’t already blooming, this interview will plant the seed.

You’ve been the co-creative director for Oscar de la Renta and the founder of Monse for quite some time. How has working for both brands changed your perspective on the fashion industry?  

I like seeing both worlds. When you work at one company, you can forget the needs of different customers. Something that works for the Oscar customer does not work for Monse and vice versa, which helps keep my mind open because I know there is no correct answer for everything. 

How has the pandemic changed the way you relate to fashion and the arts? 

The time that I spent alone helped remind myself why I love what I do. Prior to the pandemic, [fashion] had become a job to me, and I was becoming exhausted. I had forgotten how much I loved my work. I feel like I have fallen in love with it all over again.

Are there any hobbies or interests that have sustained you throughout the past year? Have they informed or inspired your design process?  

I love to cook, read, and work out, all of which I sometimes didn’t have time for before the pandemic. It was such a luxury to be able to have the time to eat well and exercise. Feeling good is one of the most inspiring things to me.

You recently collaborated with Fleuriste St-Germain to create a unique pop-up flower shop and cocktail lounge in New York City. Can you tell us a little bit more about how it came about? What drew you to the project? 

I was thrilled when the brand approached me to collaborate on Fleuriste St-Germain. St-Germain has always been a bar-cart staple for me because I love how it elevates cocktails and works with many different ingredients. And Fleuriste St-Germain was just the same, bringing together artists, performers, mixologists, and New Yorkers all in harmony for this experience. I was drawn to the project because it was an exciting platform to discuss the future of the arts and design with a like-minded community. I designed the staff masks, wrapping paper for the floral bouquets, and ballet dancer costumes by Monse, as worn by James Whiteside, my lovely collaborator, during his stunning ballet performances! The designs featured an elderflower print or embroidery to reflect the fresh, handpicked elderflowers that go into each bottle of St-Germain.

I worked with mixologist Earlecia Richelle from St-Germain to create the Rosé Spritz cocktail being served, an aromatic spritzer inspired by my heritage and love of East Asian flavors and flowers. I paired elderflower liqueur with sparkling yuzu, strawberry-infused rosé wine, and cherry blossom ice cubes. Then, James and I also hosted a questionnaire inspired by Proust. We learned a lot about each other, and it was a cool way to encourage greater connection! Overall, it was exciting to work with James and the St-Germain team to bring people together again in a safe, fun way and add a dash of inspiration to their summer weekend. This experience has left me very inspired.

From dealing with the pandemic to America’s ongoing racial reckoning, the industry has undergone massive changes over the past two years. Where do you think we go from here? What do you envision next for the future of fashion?  

I think that this past year and a half has opened our eyes to many issues. My hope is we can begin to be more responsible and respectful to others and the environment and world we live in. 

You’ve been incredibly outspoken about combating the widespread increase in anti-Asian and xenophobic rhetoric and hate crimes. What role do you think the fashion industry should have in continuing to address it?

The fashion industry can reach so many different groups, and a topic like this takes time to make needed changes. It is crucial to spread awareness so we can educate and make progress. I think the fashion industry can help promote and spread that awareness.

As a designer, you’re dictating what’s stylish. How do you decide on the collection’s focus? Do trends play a role in your design process at all? 

I always create what looks new to my eyes, not necessarily what is "stylish.”

Are there any trends from your collections or colleagues that you’re excited about for fall?  

I’m excited about florals as a trend, which feature throughout my collections this fall. This was another reason I was so excited to work on the recent flower shop collaboration for Fleuriste St-Germain, as I love flowers!

Can you tell us about your F/W 21 collections for Oscar de la Renta? What was the inspiration behind them? Are there any hero pieces that you recommend shopping for fall?

For the Oscar collections, we wanted to look back at the natural beauty of last summer, taking the pressed flowers we had done during the summer months and using them to create prints and embroideries.

"I love this look! It reminds me of the pressed flowers I find in my notebook after summer. The transparency and colors are my favorite details.”

Can you tell us about your F/W 21 collections for Monse? What was the inspiration behind them? Are there any hero pieces that you recommend shopping for fall?

The Monse F/W 21 collection was inspired by the Gossip Girl reboot, so we went back to "high school” for this collection.

"An oversize sweater with leggings is a fall staple, and I love how we updated the season with this look. It’s perfect for every day with a bit of an attitude.”

Are there any trends or pieces that you’re personally shopping for this fall? 

I love the lace-up leather moto jacket from Monse’s last collection. It’s a cool update to a closet staple.

What’s one thing you think most people don’t know about when it comes to designing a new collection for fashion week? 

The hours of work that go into creating a new collection. We work months out! 

With fashion week in full swing, can you give us any hints on what we can expect from your S/S 22 collections or projects you’re working on next? 

For Monse, we are showing our Resort 22 collection. We want to show collections that will hit the stores very soon. With Oscar, we are presenting spring/summer 2022 and showing more florals with a twist in the prints and embroidery.

The 78th annual Golden Globe Awards were…interesting. There were plenty of laughs (Amy Poehler and Tina Fey once again delivered as co-hosts), joyful and somber tears (Taylor Simone Ledward accepting the Best Actor in a Motion Picture, Drama award for her late husband Chadwick Boseman was a heart-shattering moment), and awkward technical difficulties (when the mute button strikes again!) to go around. And then, there was the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s glaring membership diversity issue, which, rightfully so, hung over the show like a gray cloud. Virtual award shows are tough. They lack the glitz, glamour, and prestige we’ve grown accustomed to all these years, but nevertheless, the show, and red carpet–worthy fashion, must go on. 

Speaking of red carpet–worthy fashion, first-time nominee Jane Levy, who tuned in from Canada, impressed in a dramatic look from Oscar de la Renta. With the help of stylist Tara Swennen, the Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist actress chose a navy silk faille–and-poppy hand-cut gown from the Pre-Spring 21 collection that wowed from every angle, paired with Vrai jewels and Jimmy Choo sandals. A smoky eye, a cat eye, and soft curls perfectly complemented the ensemble. Despite the gloomy Vancouver weather, it was a celebratory occasion for the 31-year-old and her NBC show, so we were thrilled when she agreed to document the exciting moment exclusively for Who What Wear.

First things first, congratulations on your Golden Globes nomination! What do you love about working on a show like Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist? Any standout moments from season one?

I love acting, and learning new forms of expression—singing and dancing—has been so fulfilling and fun. In season one, there was an episode called "Zoey's Extraordinary Glitch” in which I performed all of the musical numbers. Through Zoey in that episode, we make the audience laugh, cry, swoon, and cringe! I especially love to make people cringe. Ha.

It’s safe to say the Golden Globes will look a little different this year. How are you planning to join the festivities from afar?

I am in Canada shooting the second season of our show. I rented a hotel room and had my boyfriend and my closest friends (in my pod) with me. I do wish we could have all been together at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles, but I just feel fortunate to have been included.

What were some of the early conversations you and your stylist had around your Golden Globes look? What did you want to achieve?

Tara Swennen, my stylist, was texting me photos of dresses while I was on-set. There were so many stunning options, but we narrowed them down to a clean four since we would be internationally shipping back and forth.

You chose Oscar de la Renta for the event. What about this dress immediately caught your eye?

I mean, Oscar de la Renta? I bow down. This dress fit almost perfectly. We had to do very minimal alteration. I especially love the open back of the dress… and those bows?? I also love the colors blue and black together.

Did the fact that you are attending virtually influence the look you chose at all?

Yes and no. At first, I thought the shoulders of whatever dress I chose will be most important. But then, I thought I'd rather just choose the dress I feel most beautiful in.

Let’s talk about glam. How did you decide on your hair and makeup looks? Do you like to come to the table with ideas, or do you prefer to have your trusted team lead the way?

Caroline Dehner and Natalie Cosco do my hair and makeup on Zoey's. It was fun to dream up evening looks we could do together since I play a coder on the show and wear minimal makeup. We did a couple of test looks, and the fact that the Globes was virtual did influence what we eventually went with. I spoiled myself with a couple of new Hermès lipsticks recently, and I knew I wanted to wear their 54 Rose Nuit. It is matte but doesn't dry your lips. The color is soft and sexy. We went with a smoky cat eye because I'm a sucker for cat eyes.

When it comes to prepping your skin, what are some of your go-to products?

I get facials a lot. I love Lisa at The Skin Girls up here in Vancouver. Unfortunately, the best way to achieve beautiful skin, in my opinion, is drinking tons of water, exercising, not drinking alcohol (boo!), limited salt the night before being on camera, and getting tons of sleep. In terms of products, my favorite oil is Best Skin Ever ($31) from Living Libations. Their Frankincense smell is divine. I also use the skincare from Moon Juice. Their Plump Jelly ($58) and Cosmic Cream ($58) feel so nourishing and sit on my skin under makeup well. After the shower, I lather my body with Everyday Oil's Mainstay Blend ($14), which I can't get in Canada, so I traveled up here with four bottles!

There are few makeup artists as legendary and prolific as Gucci Westman. She’s responsible for the beauty looks on countless magazine covers (think Jennifer Aniston for InStyle and Reese Witherspoon for Vogue) and ad campaign and runway looks for fashion’s biggest brands (Dior, Proenza Schouler, and Oscar de la Renta), and she has a celebrity client list that could fill this page. Westman’s coveted aesthetic has become renowned and unmistakable, a supernatural dewy glow, which you may or may not recognize as makeup at all. 

Growing up between Sweden and L.A. gave Westman a unique perspective on beauty from a young age, and at 23, she enrolled in a four-month program at a makeup school in Paris. She was hooked and shortly thereafter moved back to L.A. to put her newly learned techniques to use. Though she worked many of her first jobs without pay, prioritizing the experience and exposure, it wasn’t long before word of her profound talent and dedicated work ethic spread, and she added her first legendary piece of work to her résumé: the makeup for Spike Jonze’s feature film directorial debut, Being John Malkovich. It was there that she met Cameron Diaz, whom she would work with regularly in the coming years, while adding countless other celebrities to her roster.

Westman eventually moved to New York, where she met Vogue’s creative director, Grace Coddington (tune in for that story), and her career would be forever changed. "I had probably a year and a half straight where I did all of the covers, and then I also had multiple issues where I did the cover and every story,” she remembers of her early days with Vogue. Westman had become arguably the most influential makeup artist of the time, working between editorial and brand campaigns and fashion week runway shows from New York to Milan, where she recounts not only spotting trends on the runway but also creating them. "In New York, I used to do sometimes eight or nine shows, and if I really wanted a red lip to be a trend, I would do it multiple times until it translated that the red lip is a trend,” says Westman. 

Westman went on to become the international artistic director at Lancôme and spent 13 years as the global artistic director at Revlon, where she worked on product development, color, and trend collections for the brand. Those experiences became invaluable when, two years ago, after identifying a white space in the market, she debuted her own line of clean, high-performance, and uncompromisingly luxurious makeup under Westman Atelier. Creating formulations from scratch that meet her highly critical performance standards and exclude her extensive ingredient blacklist is no easy feat, but as Westman says, "nothing that comes easily is rewarding." Now, as the founder and creative director of the brand, Westman’s aesthetic and creative vision are coming alive in a brand-new way.

When someone asks about the influence of Asian culture on the fashion industry, it's common to point to the label on the back of your shirt reading "Made in China/India/Thailand." But the impact of Asian heritage and Asian designers in fashion goes far beyond clothing labels. Some of the most prominent designers in the industry are of Asian descent, and Asia has also been the birthplace of many important technological advancements, such as the discovery of silk. Although Asia has contributed greatly to the world of fashion and technology, the term "Asian" fails to capture the diversity of nationalities, ethnicities, cultures, and styles within it.

The fashion industry has a long history of failing to represent marginalized groups, and it's crucial that we continue to be allies, particularly to the Asian American and Pacific Islander communities. This is especially important in light of the recent increase in anti-Asian hate crimes.

While some brands are donating proceeds to AAPI organizations, it's important to recognize that this is not enough. As fashion lovers, the easiest way we can actively fight racism is by learning about and shopping for pieces from the AAPI community. No one does evening wear quite like Bibhu Mohapatra. The Indian-born designer is known for his exquisitely detailed and colorful evening gowns that make jaws drop. His talent and contribution to the industry have earned him a seat on the CFDA board, and he remains one of India's most beloved designers. Mohapatra's designs have even caught the eye of former First Lady Michelle Obama. While his pieces are only available online, he continues to showcase India's budding talent and leave a mark on the global fashion industry.

Yohji Yamamoto

Let it be known: Nobody quite did it like the late and beloved Japanese designer Yohji Yamamoto. His mastery of tailoring and avant-garde designs has expanded the way we dress through deconstructed androgynous pieces since the '70s. Which other designers can take a traditional piece and make it camp without it having to be worn to the Met Gala? Yamamoto's work, though often in black, is the most provocative. His tenure has continuously made us question what constitutes a quality piece and what our clothing says about us.

Issey Miyake

Born in Hiroshima, Japan, Issey Miyake was one of the original designers who paved the way for Asian designers to take center stage in the international fashion world. Miyake began his career working at Givenchy and then started his own brand, Miyake Design Studio, in the '80s. Through experimentation, he became known for his iconic thinly pleated pieces. While he passed away on August 5, 2022, his pleated pieces and his legacy of being a maverick continue to inspire the fashion industry.

Kenzō Takada

It's hard to imagine what the fashion industry would be like today if Kenzō Takada had listened to society's expectations and not pursued a career in design. Growing up in Tokyo, it was taboo for a man to work in the fashion industry, and Takada wasn't even allowed to attend design school. But that didn't stop him from moving to Paris and starting his own brand. He disrupted cultural norms and created ready-to-wear collections 45 years before they became widely adopted in the industry. Takada was also the first designer to feature his groundbreaking, over-the-top floral patterns in the European-dominated couture space at the time. Although he passed away in October 2020, his legacy as one of the first "outsiders" to bring Asian design to the cultural forefront lives on.

Humberto Leon and Carol Lim of Opening Ceremony

If there were a fashion power duo, Humberto Leon and Carol Lim would undoubtedly fit the bill. Though not a traditional power couple, their friendship and work have made a significant impact on the industry. Back in the 2000s, it was rare to find a brand that committed itself to making fashion exploratory and creating space for emerging artists, as Opening Ceremony did. While Leon and Lim's careers have since evolved—they've stepped down as creative directors for LVMH’s Kenzo brand and shuttered their retail stores to focus solely on their own label—there's no denying the enduring impact they've had on the fashion world.

Joseph Altuzarra

Few designers have mastered the art of creating feminine yet tailored clothing quite like Joseph Altuzarra. Born and raised in Paris, with a professional background that includes stints at fashion giants like Marc Jacobs and Proenza Schouler, this multicultural designer's creations exude a blend of French sophistication and practical American-girl charm. What's truly remarkable about Altuzarra is that, as an Asian designer, he creates clothing that appeals to a wide variety of people from diverse backgrounds. This quality is what sets him apart and makes his work so special.

Prabal Gurung

When we consider designers who not only draw inspiration from their cultural roots to inspire their work but also leverage their creations to uplift communities, Prabal Gurung comes to mind. Despite being based in New York, the Nepalese American designer consistently uses his work to raise awareness for global issues. In addition to crafting stunning, consciousness-raising clothing, Gurung established a foundation to support underprivileged children in Nepal and is committed to generating sustainable job opportunities and income. In essence, this designer is transforming the world, one garment at a time.

Anna Sui

Unlike some other designers, Anna Sui isn’t afraid to do things differently. In fact, her entry into starting her own line was spurred by getting fired and having savings of $300. But with friends like Pat McGrath and Steven Meisel encouraging her and models like Linda Evangelista and Naomi Campbell walking her runway, Sui was bound for success. Her success, however, didn’t come from stars like Madonna wearing her looks (though, that helped). In truth, Sui was unafraid to dip her toes into grunge or into trends people would consider "ugly.” She carved out a niche for herself that allowed her to break through the noise to make the world more colorful.

Vera Wang

Anyone who dreams of having a wedding one day has probably heard of Vera Wang. But what many don’t know is that, unlike other designers, her first career wasn’t in design. In fact, she wanted to be a figure skater. But after not making the Olympic team, she went on to work at Vogue. Shortly after that, she designed her own wedding dress, and the rest was history. Although Vera's path to becoming the iconic designer she is today was tumultuous, her journey since then has been showered with accolades. She has expanded beyond designing wedding dresses and has become a cultural icon in her own right.

Derek Lam

Look up the word "polished" in the dictionary, and a piece from Derek Lam’s collection should appear. Before the American-born designer became known for his work, established his spinoff brand 10 Crosby Street, and even won the CFDA Swarovski Perry Ellis Award; Lam started his career in the '90s working for Michael Kors. His coming of age during a time of uncertainty in the fashion world may have been what led him to create timeless pieces that continue to endure.

Jason Wu

If you can remember that stunning white dress Michelle Obama wore the night of the inaugural ball in 2009, that was by none other than Jason Wu. Since that moment, Wu has become a force in his own right, including having his work featured in the First Ladies Collection at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History. But don’t be fooled; that’s not all he’s been up to. He’s had collaborations with Target, Bergdorf Goodman, and even Eloquii. Basically, Wu is one for the history books.

Phillip Lim

It should be noted that Phillip Lim did not even think being a designer was an option. In fact, he started his journey by studying business and economics. The call to design eventually lead him to start 3.1 Phillip Lim in the fall of 2005, and while some designers work under the helm of other houses, Lim jumped right in and has only designed for himself throughout his career, which makes his work so sincerely his. After all, no one quite nails the balance of duality quite like Lim.

Sandy Liang

Sandy Liang may be a newcomer to the game, but don’t get it twisted. You need to keep your eyes on this young designer. She started by interning under Jason Wu, Phillip Lim, and Opening Ceremony, but eventually took the leap and started her own brand. Since then, her granny-chic aesthetic (inspired by her grandmother) has garnered a unique following. While her work pays tribute to her roots, ultimately, she designs the type of clothes you find any New York girl wearing on the subway: a little bit practical, a little bit quirky, and totally chic.

Huishan Zhang

Some of the greatest talent in the industry is coming from China at the moment, and Huishan Zhang is one of them. While newer to the industry, the London-based designer has become known for his ability to meld Eastern and Western styles to create feminine, classic pieces inspired by history. While he might pay tribute to the past through silhouettes and themes, Huishan Zhang is definitely the future of fashion.

Han Chong of Self-Portrait

Self-Portrait has become a beloved brand by many in recent years, including Beyoncé and the Duchess of Sussex. Started by Malaysian-born designer Han Chong in 2013, the brand had a rapid rise to success, which can be attributed to the fact that his work fills a gap within the industry. His designer pieces are achievable both in the fiscal and physical sense, and who doesn’t love a brand that you can wear to a royal wedding or your best friend’s wedding?

Guo Pei

While Guo Pei was well-known among the Glimmerati of China, she wasn’t a player on the international stage until Rihanna came out stunting her stunning yellow gown at the Met Gala in 2015. Honestly, we’re so grateful to Rihanna for it because Guo Pei is the couture designer of our dreams. Finding inspiration from embroidery, fairytales, and painting traditions that date back thousands of years, Guo Pei’s work is always larger than life and embodies what couture is. The question is, will she create a ready-to-wear collection in the future? And if not, how can we get away with wearing one of her pieces to Trader Joe’s?

Laura Kim of Monse

Early on in her career, Korean designer Laura Kim was someone everyone knew to keep their eyes on. Not only did she win scholarships from the CDFA, but she was also asked by Oscar de la Renta himself to join the team after interning. Her decade tenure as studio director allowed her to meet Dominican-born designer Fernando Garcia, who became a close friend and eventually a partner. Together, they went on to launch their first brand, Monse, and after two years were brought back to the helm of de la Renta. While Kim co-designs for both brands and her partnership with Garcia defines what it means to be a power couple, let it be known that Laura Kim is a badass in her own right. This woman continuously shows her ability to shift from brand to brand and that her talent cannot be limited.

Chitose Abe of Sacai

Chitose Abe has been in the design game for a minute, but she’s not quite followed the same path as her popular Japanese predecessors. She began by working as a pattern maker at Comme des Garçons until giving birth to her child. From there on, she was slow to grow her brand, Sacai. While most would assume this is a terrible strategy to keep her brand under the radar by not immediately opening stores or showing in Paris, it’s paid off. Not only does Abe approach the growth of her business differently, but she also designs pieces that combine the discipline of textural Japanese pieces with the practicality of everyday life.

Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garçons

It would be a travesty to define Rei Kawakubo just as a Japanese designer. While she did grow up in Tokyo and rose to the international stage around the same time as some of her counterparts, this woman would detest such an unoriginal definition of her, and it does not behoove her influence. Her work can be viewed at the same level as Coco Chanel—forever altering the way women dress and giving us permission to explore the boundaries of gender, body, and femininity through vanguard, deconstructed pieces. No other designer has really ever pulled off the extensive amount of changes and exploratory work that Kawakubo has from season to season. After all, it doesn't get more exploratory than Rihanna's Met Gala look. Kawakubo has become known for her ability to not only rebel against the norm but to make us question it as well.

And isn't that the mark of a designer that's truly changed the fashion industry? One that's able to design pieces that are not only seared into the cultural zeitgeist but deeply moving? There's no denying their impact, it's in every stitch.

Grace Ling

There's no denying that Grace Ling has been making waves in the fashion industry lately. Last year, she won the Inaugural 2024 CFDA x Genesis House Innovation Grant, became a CFDA Vogue Fashion Fund Finalist, and received the 2024 CVFF x Gap Inc Award. Accomplishments aside, Grace Ling, the Singapore-born designer, has been pioneering the fashion landscape with her eccentric and elegant designs that prioritize femininity. Her label seamlessly fuses technology with traditional craft methods, as evident in the 3D-printed metal pieces and sculptural silhouettes.

Yuni Buffa

If you're a fashion insider, you've likely heard of Yuni Buffa. For those who haven’t, let us introduce this emerging Asian designer. Yuni Buffa is a five-year-old footwear brand, named after its designer, which creates both modern and classic styles, ranging from trendy quilted pumps to timeless leather ballet flats. Every part of production comes from local sources, utilizing high-quality leathers and custom hardware with the goal of creating the most comfortable and stylish pairs. Focusing on a sustainable approach, Buffa produces in limited quantities. This simple and thoughtful process reflects the brand’s style, which is inspired by '90s minimalism.

This New York Fashion Week has been an endless supply of style inspiration and It girl moments, but it’s the Hadid sisters who have really taken the cake. With their buzzy fashion and adorable sibling moments, the paparazzi can’t get enough—and frankly, neither can we.

Images of the two models have become a permanent fixture in our newsfeed this week, whether they're on the runway or laughing on their iPhones backstage.

Kate Bosworth just stepped out on the Met Gala red carpet in a look that we’re sure no one will forget anytime soon. Selecting your dream wedding dress is no easy feat, but we imagine that choosing a trio of dresses would be even harder. Vogue just profiled Nicole Warne's stunning wedding, and we can't take our eyes off the three gowns she wore for the occasion.

Warne, aka Gary Pepper Girl, wore a Valentino Haute Couture gown for the ceremony. She told Vogue that it "was made out of 38 meters of silk organza, silk tulle, and crepe cad, with 17 meters of silk tulle used to create the embroidery alone. It took 20 embroiderers and nearly 4 weeks to create my dream dress at the Valentino atelier."

When designers reach a worldwide level of fame and recognition, it becomes easy for us to forget that there is actually a person behind it all. At the end of the day, designers are people with their own complex lives and individual backgrounds—just like the rest of us. Though many labels come and go, there are those which seem eternally popular. To reach that level of fame, designers must not only be born with immense talent but also be able to convey something new and unexpected in a tasteful way.

When you look at a breakdown of where in the world some of fashion’s biggest names have come from, the range and representation of different countries is astounding. At its core, fashion is the art of portraying one’s interior self to the outside world, so it makes sense that fashion’s biggest names extend across the globe. Though it may seem surprising at first, this is the exact kind of diversity that allows for a fresh take on fashion that enables designers to ascend to international acclaim.

The S/S 17 collection is a transitional one for Oscar de la Renta. Following the departure of creative director Peter Copping—and prior to the inaugural collection of newly appointed creative directors Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia—the collection was designed by the classicly elegant brand's studio team. The pretty pieces that Oscar de la Renta is known for were present, with an emphasis on shades of white, feathered and beaded details, and safari prints. It was refreshing to see that every model wore flat beaded sandals, even those clad in ball gowns. The unexpected choice of footwear gave a fresh, youthful spin to even the most sophisticated looks. If the designers of Oscar de la Renta say it's acceptable to wear flats with gowns, then it must be so!

The fashion world has felt a bit lacking since Oscar de la Renta’s passing in October of last year. Known most for his exquisite couture dresses and ready-to-wear separates favoured by the world’s most distinguished women, the Dominican-American designer was loved fiercely by all who knew him or had the pleasure of wearing his clothes. While his replacement, Peter Copping, showed a stunning first collection for the house and will likely continue on that path, we’re all still yearning for a little Oscar.

It seems our prayers have finally been answered with the announcement of the designer’s first retrospective, which will open at San Francisco’s de Young Museum on February 26, 2016 and run until May 30, 2016. Curated by another fashion heavyweight, the former editor-at-large for Vogue, André Leon Talley, and prepared in collaboration with the house of de la Renta and his family, it is sure to be a hit worthy of the man himself.

We can expect a show that follows his life and career from inception, growing up in the Dominican Republic, to finale, as one of our most iconic designers. Over 100 delicious ensembles created under his leadership will be on view. We can only hope that Taylor Swift or Sarah Jessica Parker’s famous Met Ball dresses will be in the mix!

For a long time, I never spent more than about $150 on a pair of shoes. I forayed in everything from sub-$30 shoes (a dabbling I strongly recommend against after one very painful romp across Midtown Manhattan) to $400 booties on sale for a remarkable $133 (one of my favourite sale finds to date!)—but never did I drop more than $150 on a pair. I simply refused, based on principle, on account of my love for thriftiness, and on a belief that, truthfully, is a $400 shoe that much more high-quality than a $100 shoe?

The answer, I’ve now learned, is that yes, it is. I recently donated 400 of my hard-earned dollars to a for-profit charity organisation otherwise known as Bloomingdale’s, purchasing this pair of Stuart Weitzman pumps that I simply could not refuse. When I saw the perfectly pointed stiletto, the subtle gleam of iridescence, and the deeply-cut silhouette of the arch, I felt that I had waited my entire life to spend so much money on one pair of shoes—and this was the pair I was destined for.

As my clicker finger paused over the purchase button, I pondered what I was doing. As a 28-year-old woman, I had finally reached the point where I felt like I should own a pair of shoes that costs a somewhat significant portion of my rent—ones that at least had the potential to elevate my personal style from respectable to undeniable. My feet needed an upgrade. Plus, this was all in the name of science: I had to test my long-held belief that expensive shoes weren’t that much better than shoes of average price points. I clicked purchase.

And I’m here to share with you, ladies, an unfortunate truth: Expensive shoes really are better than cheap ones. Here’s a breakdown of what I’ve gathered, point by point:

1. They’re more comfortable.

While stilettos are rarely if ever comfortable, this pair is without a doubt the most comfortable I’ve ever owned. Because the construction quality is so high, and the quality of the leather is too, I feel like my foot is being constantly hugged by my shoe—a sensation that gives at least the illusion of comfort, even when true comfort isn’t entirely present.

2. They feel much more stable.

What’s truly amazing about a well-crafted stiletto is that it makes you feel like you’re not walking on a stabby rod of metal, when in fact you are. While most stilettos I’ve owned have mostly resulted in me wobbling around like a maniac, this more expensive pair somehow makes me feel like I can walk like a normal human being in them. Unlike with shoes that are more cheaply constructed, I don’t feel like I’m tempting fate with each and every step.

3. They magically withdraw compliments from others.

As much as I don’t want to believe it’s true, expensive shoes just look better. If you buy a good pair of expensive heels, they tend to look expensive, which just equates to looking sleek, well-made, and stylish. While I am a big proponent of brands like Zara and ASOS, who have more affordable shoes that oftentimes look just as pricey as the real deal—I’ve come to believe that there is no replacement for true quality.

For us modern women, this ancient system of codes can be quite confusing—after all, we’re used to wearing our sneakers to dinner!

A black-tie event is the epitome of a formal event. Cocktail-length dresses are only allowed if they are extremely dressy and sleek.

What To Wear: A formal, floor-length gown is preferred. Also allowed: a dressy cocktail dress or your best LBD paired with fancier jewellery, which will elevate the overall look.

A black-tie-optional event is still dressy, but not as strict. In other words, you can wear a formal evening gown, but no one will look at you twice if you choose to wear a cocktail dress.

What To Wear: A formal floor-length evening gown, fancier cocktail dress, a tux-style pantsuit, or LBD.

This is a professional look that isn’t overly dressy. Think: something you could definitely wear to the office (i.e., on the conservative side) but would feel comfortable wearing to grab a work drink.

What To Wear: An open-collar shirt or sweater, with a pencil skirt or trousers. You can also wear a dress, as long as it’s not provocative.

Imagine what you would wear if you were giving a very important presentation at work. That’s essentially how you should dress for a business casual event.

What To Wear: A tailored, polished dress with a blazer, or a pantsuit. Whatever you wear, style it with appropriate heels. This is not the time for flats or super-high club shoes.

Your average brunch look.

What To Wear: A skirt (either long or short) and plain tee, nice jeans with a button-down blouse, or a cotton sundress. Flats are fine.

Think: black tie with some breathing room. Still formal and dressy, but with a smidge of playfulness thrown in.

What To Wear: A dressy cocktail dress, floor-length evening gown, or LBD, plus fun and unique accessories.

Think: Olivia Palermo on just about any given day. A look that is casual, but not at all lazy or frumpy.

What To Wear: A dressy blouse with jeans and heels, a skirt and top set, a crisp pantsuit, or a dress. Flats are acceptable as long as they are not overtly casual (i.e., no sneakers).

As the name suggests, a semiformal event is just that: semi formal. It’s certainly still dressy, but not as much so as a black-tie-optional event.

What To Wear: A cocktail dress, LBD, floor-length skirt and blouse in appropriate fabrics, like silk, or dressy separates. You can also wear a long dress if you wish.

This is the most extravagant of all the dress codes—perhaps that’s why this year’s Met Gala utilised it. Think: full ball gown, elbow-length gloves, and all your best jewellery.

What To Wear: A floor-length evening gown (mandatory), gloves (optional), and your best jewellery. Your dress should incorporate luxe fabrications, like lace, silk, and chiffon. 

As the name suggests, this is a dressy event that is still meant to be primarily social and enjoyable.

What To Wear: A cocktail dress (obviously), LBD, or a shorts suit in more formal fabrications, plus a sleek pair of heels. Flats are not recommended, but can work in certain situations.
