One such mastermind is Olivia Wilde (and her stylist Karla Welch), who arrived at the Michael Kors Collection S/S 24 show in Brooklyn this week wearing 2023's most daring trend: hot pants. Minuscule in size but huge in impact, the teeny-tiny shorts that have been popping up all year are shockingly difficult to style in a low-key, approachable manner. Yet that's exactly how I'd describe Wilde's look, which included the brown suede shorts, a matching cashmere sweater, sheer tights, and a floor-length coat, all of which were designed by the man of the hour, Michael Kors. She also added her signature Ray-Ban Wayfarers, of course, and knee-high suede boots from Stuart Weitzman. Just like that, Wilde cracked the code for styling hot pants for fall. Add a maxi coat, tights, and boots, and voilà—a completely wearable way to style bottoms that are only an inch away from being underwear.

Though the advent of autumn isn't typically one to incline you reach for you shortest shorts, there seems to be something in the air this season that's encouraging our favourite celebrities to do exactly that.

Maybe the emergence of the micro-short is the natural retort to the jorts trend that dominated the summer months, or perhaps the trend has caught on as an alternative way to layer now that tights weather has returned. Whatever the culprit, we're spotting micro-shorts here, there and everywhere this fashion month.

Celebrities, they're just like us. Except when they're not at all. When jetting to and from their red carpet appearances, traveling to film on location, or simply heading on their own vacations, the Hollywood crowd plays by a set of rules all their own, at least when it comes to what they wear to the airport. You'd think that some of the most well-traveled A-listers would have their travel style down pat, but the styling choices we're about to dive into here say otherwise.

Yep, today we're discussing all the daring, controversial, and downright risky fashion choices celebs have been making while heading to the airport, from boldly wearing an all-white ensemble to stepping out in tall stilettos and even donning heavy-duty leather pieces. There's no question that the seven looks below are anything short of flawless, but I'll be the first one to say it: the idea of recreating them for myself makes me, well, squeamish. And sure, if you're a celeb catching a flight you're probably not roughing it like the rest of us in the main security checkpoint or even heading to a major airport if you fly private, but nonetheless these outfit choices are puzzling ones for any kind of air travel.

The offense: Opting for an all-white outfit

Absolutely no shade to Olivia Wilde because she looks so cool here, but I'd be lying if I said that the thought of wearing this exact outfit on a flight didn't make me squirm out of discomfort. Her off-white suit is extremely chic, especially with the funky cowboy boots, but I just know I'd become a magnet for stains if I ever wore the same thing to the airport.

Looks aside, though, we can't help but call out that the tissue-thin, sheer fabric of the suit would leave us shivering underneath the blast of an in-flight A/C.

Amal Clooney's offense is a relatively minor one when compared to some of the other's we've already discussed. But nonetheless it's something I personally always try and avoid. Ever the polished dresser, Clooney arrived at the airport with a top-handle bag as a personal item in addition to her carry-on roller luggage. As you can see from the photo, it doesn't leave her with any free hands to hold her boarding pass and I.D. at security so while it's certainly chic, it's kind of impractical. Instead, I'd carry a bag with an additional shoulder or crossbody strap.

Try instead: Travel bags that go over the shoulder

The offense: Wearing a jumpsuit (and a leather one, at that)

Cate Blanchett's leather flight suit is giving all kinds of Top Gun energy. But it's daring for two reasons. The first is that jumpsuits of any kind are typically a no-no when traveling simply because they're tricky to get on and off. And then add in that Blanchett's is made from a heavy-duty leather that I'd imagine wouldn't be very comfortable to wearing while sitting down for a long period of time. Sure, I wouldn't personally copy this one but I can't deny just how cool it looks on her.

Try instead: Cargo separates

The offense: Stepping out in open-toed heels

On Anne Hathaway: Nili Lotan Flora Trouser Jeans ($425); Dr. Barbara Sturm x Aquzzura Storm mules

Anne Hathaway is known to be an expert airport dresses. See exhibit A, B, and C. But on this particular occasion while arriving to the airport in Cannes, the actress wore a pair of shoes that strike me as being the opposite of travel-friendly. Her strappy Aquazzura mules feature a 3.7-inch stiletto heel with an open toe and while there's no question they look good (especially with her trouser jeans and button-down shirt), there's just no way they're the comfiest option to fly in.

Try instead: Classic loafers

The offense: Wearing tall heels and a summery outfit

On Florence Pugh: Valentino shirt, top, shorts, shoes, and bag

Florence Pugh is no stranger to a daring outfit choice, whether she be stepping out in sky-high Valentino platforms or a sheer thong-exposing skirt. But this look is controversial in a different sense. While it's a casual summer outfit we'd gladly pack for vacation, the crop top, shorts, and strappy heels don't exactly scream practical for the airport. I don't know about you, but I'm getting cold just looking at her.

Ana de Armas wore a pair of shorts to the airport—and white ones, at that. While she was probably coming back from a warmer climate, wearing shorts on a flight is still a risky decision no matter the destination or departure.

We predicted that Asics gel sneakers would become the next "ugly but cool" pair to know, and Addison Rae's recent outfits are confirming their rise. I’m calling it—2023 is going to be the biggest and best year for beauty yet. In the last few years, there’s been a continued shift in the industry which has led to the rule book has been well and truly scrapped, perhaps for good. The world of beauty has become less about seeking supposed perfection and more of a safe space for self expression and experimentation—I, for one, am here for it. Because why shouldn’t you wear a neon eyeshadow to do the weekly food shop if it feels good?

Taking the above into consideration, there was one makeup artist I knew I had to pin down for a DMBC (deep and meaningful beauty chat). With 20+ years experience in the industry, makeup artist, Jo Baker has become known for her out-of-the-box red carpet looks she artfully creates for a host of celebrity clientele. Think Lucy Boynton, Olivia Wilde and Sharon Stone. "Humanity has become so open and inclusive,” explains Baker. "There is no beauty standard anymore, it’s getting smashed daily. We are at the point of no return where anything goes and anything is possible and we are going to continue to see more art through beauty."

"Back in the day you found your perfect foundation and stuck to it. You found your perfect eyeshadow palette that made your eyes look great and you stuck to it. It was very much ‘I’ve found my format of what makes me pretty, so I’m just going to stay there.’ It couldn’t be more opposite today. There’s a complete shift where everyone is almost having this explosion of self expression. There are neons and pastels and primary colours and gemstones, and all of these things that have become really big in my personal way of doing makeup in the last few years. I feel next year there’s going to be a further extension of that.”

Such belief Baker has in this beauty movement, she co-founded BAKEUP, a brand specifically designed to push the boundaries of experimental beauty and self-expression. "It's going to give people the encouragement, the invitation and the permission to play and see makeup as this amazing, expressive tool to just have fun and be whoever you want to be each day depending on your mood.” Keep your eyes peeled for its launch into the UK in the new year.

1. Colour Burst

Models on countless catwalks were flourished with a splash of colour across their lids. I noticed mint green at DSquared2, lavender at Prabal Gurung and royal blue at Dries Van Noten. The charm of this trend is that you can opt for a pastel shade or dial it up with a brighter pigment. Finish off the look with a simple slick of mascara.

2. Elegant Embellishment

According to Baker, this is set to be one of the biggest beauty trends of 2023. "Gemstones give a much better payoff than a sparkly eyeshadow because of how they hit the light,” she explains. If you’re reading this as someone who likes to play it safe—don't stress! "You can dial things up and dial things down, so even if you’re conservative and not very adventurous you can still wear gemstones in a way that’s very simplistic.”

3. Mega Metallics

Metallics have swept across both fashion and beauty, and runways such as Chloe, Jill Sander and Valentino very much proved that. Take inspiration from A list makeup artist Hung Vanngo, who perfectly shade-matched a striking gold eyeshadow to the shimmering sequins on Florence Pugh’s co-ord. A match made in heaven.

4. Draped Blush

The beauty trend first popularised in the ‘70s will have a massive resurgence in 2023 thanks to Aliétte, Christian Cowan and Etro. Fun fact: Baker created this look on Sharon Stone for the cover of Harper's Bazaar Spain (above). "More mature women are craving something different,” explains Baker. "[Stone] said she wanted to have fun with makeup and told me to do what I wanted as she’s been painted in a classic, predictable, expected level of beauty her whole life. All the young kids are having fun, so why can’t she as well? Why can’t she feel youthful and experimental? This is definitely not just a Gen Z movement.”

5. Neon Lips

Glazed and glossy lips have been a go-to look for the past year thanks to the likes of Hailey Bieber and Kendall Jenner. I come bearing good news for those with an extensive lipstick wardrobe of bright hues— neon matte shades spanning the entire colour wheel were seen at across the summer runways. Sharpen your black kohl eyeliner and dig out your smokiest grey-toned eyeshadow palette because grunge glamour is back in the classiest way.
