Millennials invented wearing dresses over jeans, and now, it seems Gen Z has adopted the once-cringey look. At least, Olivia Rodrigo has.

While promoting her Daisy Chain Fields Festival, Rodrigo posed in front of a lineup poster wearing a lacy dress, bootcut jeans, and a pair of black ballet pumps. She accessorized with the Paloma Wool Cayetano Bag everyone is wearing. It was the perfect summery look that felt casual but cool.

Polka dots were by far the dominant print last summer, but their massive popularity hasn't led to trend fatigue. If anything, polka dots are set to be everywhere this summer as well. It's just a timeless pattern that feels retro rather than entirely outdated. Plus, it's whimsical without trying too hard.

I'm in meetings with stylish fashion editors every day, so you can be sure I'm always paying attention to the outfits sweeping through the office. As a devoted denim wearer, I'm particularly attuned to the shoe trends people are pairing with their jeans, and recently I've noticed a common thread amongst some of the chicest women I work with.

Millennials seem to be passing down style gems to Gen Zers, unbeknownst to them. The latest example of the “hipster” generation’s trends trickling down to the new wave of fashion connoisseurs comes via Olivia Rodrigo, wearing a trend millennials still love today. Olivia Rodrigo has become somewhat of an Anglophile in recent years. The look in question featured a floral-print Henley tank by Chemena Kamali for Chloe’s recent spring/summer 2026 collection—a panoply the singer has regularly worn, including during the Marie Antoinette-inspired music video for the record’s first lead single “Drop Dead”—a pair of black Levi’s jeans and the Coach Swing Zip bag. However, what piqued our interest most wasn’t this reliable outfit template, but the elevated shoe choice she paired these British staples with.

Rather than embracing the romantic undertones of the botanical top by styling it with ballet flats or leaning into the edgy undertones of her cigarette trousers with a pair of sturdy boots, she eschewed both modes entirely by opting for a pair of chic pointed-toe heels.

If you've been a longtime Alexa Chung fan, you may remember a pair of shoes she wore constantly during what some refer to as the “indie-twee era”: Carel’s Kina. All these years later, Olivia Rodrigo was recently been seen wearing a pair too.

Interested in learning more about the brand’s history, I started reading up on it. Carel began in 1947, when Georges and Rosa Carel opened their first women’s shoe boutique in Paris. Their goal was to create shoes that were both comfortable and elegant, favoring an under-two-inch “trotter” heel, which feels incredibly me.

In 1974, the Marquis was released—a flat-heeled ballerina shoe decorated with a bow, reminiscent of an opera slipper. As the line continued to grow, it began gaining celebrity fans, including actress Isabelle Huppert. Then, in 2010, the iconic triple-strap, 1.6-inch-heel Kina finally came into play. Today, the enduring silhouette is still a best seller and has continued to diversify its designs.

I ended up trying the Carlotta, and as soon as I put them on, I literally said these exact words out loud to my partner: “These are beautiful, gorgeous, and perfect.” They truly feel like the ideal shoe. I was genuinely surprised by how impeccably soft and comfortable the leather was, which the label describes as feeling like “a second skin.” And the shape feels especially feminine and chic.

Other pairs that caught my attention include two especially showstopping, vacation-y new arrivals: the Acai heels and Piscine sandals, both adorned with tropical flower appliqués—a popular trend for spring/summer 2026. More in line with my personal style are the Emilie and Princesse, along with my absolute dream fall boot, the Starter boots.

Famed photographer Bill Cunningham once quipped that “fashion is the armour to survive the reality of everyday life”. How this actually transpires looks different from one person to the next. However, whilst performing a slew of records from her discography in celebration of them hitting one billion streams on Spotify during an exclusive concert in Barcelona, Olivia Rodrigo proved that whatever sartorial protection one equips themselves with will always spark discourse.

For the uninitiated, the “Drop Dead” singer chose a perfectly innocuous ensemble that’s in line with her all-American girl-grown-up stage persona—a hand-embellished puff-sleeved top from emerging fashion brand Génération78 that she wore as a babydoll dress and a pair of leather Dr Martens that laced up to her knees.

It’s a silhouette that the songstress has sported many times and personifies the cinematic and stylistic influences that inspire her sonic identity. (Including, but not limited to, Sofia Coppola’s The Virgin Suicides, Riot Grrrl bands like Bikini Kill and Princess-core tropes like chintzy tiaras and vintage saccharine minis from the likes of Todd Oldham and Blumarine.)

Immediately, her autonomy to wear this sweet, floral-adorned and jewel-encrusted thigh-grazer with matching bloomers was irrevocably revoked. Some dubbed it as “infantilising” whilst others were scandalised by the idea that an adult woman would choose to wear something she herself felt comfortable, confident and in line with her creative vision in front of her teenage fanbase. But there’s more to this babydoll dress than meets the eye, with the ethereal and coquettish silhouette a harbinger of rebellion, subversion and anti-establishment of the punk persuasion.

Indeed, this undermining of traditionally feminine tropes has been happening for decades, with the most pronounced disruptions from the likes of Courtney Love and Kat Bjelland. As with anything in fashion, once a trend begins to bubble up in a subculture—in this case, the ‘90s Pacific Northwest grunge and Californian rock scenes—it’s soon thrust into the mainstream. Soon, Marc Jacobs was designing a slew of babydoll dresses during his time at Perry Ellis that not only encouraged these aesthetic sensibilities, but literally outfitted those who wanted in on the trend.

Naturally, in the decades that followed, the style that once began as a cost-saving measure during the ‘40s—the style’s creator, Sylvia Pedlar, was encouraged to trim metres of her nightgowns during wartime fabric rations—became ubiquitous and a part of the cultural landscape in its own right.

In the past spring/summer 2026 season alone, many prolific designers who explore themes of girlhood, from Miuccia Prada to Chemena Kamali at Chloé, all presented varying interpretations of the shape. Elsewhere, many contemporary brands rooted in a dreamlike nostalgia and romanticism, including Dôen, Faithfull and If Only If, have made babydoll dresses a signature part of their brand identities. So, if wearing one is supposed to be this depraved act, why are they just so darling?

If anything, the overarching lesson to be gleaned from this palaver is that, subconsciously or not, this summer is set to be the season of the babydoll dress. Whether worn in overt retaliation to the criticism or proud defence of an innocuous shape, this style demands to be seen. And with Rodrigo’s new album, You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love, on its way, it feels like the perfect backdrop to this phase of wearing whatever you want, how you want, lace-embellishments and all.

The youngest member of the Kardashian-Jenner clan has been making waves since the "King Kylie" era (who else could convince a generation of pre-teens that all you need is a lip kit to look like her). Having now evolved from her skinny-jeans-and-logo-mania days, today, her summer style is all about bodycon separates and a cute colour palette. Looking for a casual 'fit for weekends? When I think of summer fashion, dresses and sandals are what typically come to mind, the slinkier and strappier the better. They're airy and easy, two qualities I look for whenever temperatures rise to peak-summer levels. Or, at least, that was my go-to pairing. In the lead-up to 2026, I've seen a few alternative shoe options that have me questioning my longtime allegiance to sandals, steering my footwear preferences toward another, less conventional shoe trend: moto boots. Apparently, chic girls in their 20s aren't loyal to sandals like I thought we all were, and when they're looking for shoes to wear with summer dresses, moto boots are the style they're grabbing right now. Case in point? Olivia Rodrigo.

The singer, who's gearing up to release her third album, You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love, was spotted on June 12 in Barcelona this week shopping with friends ahead of a private concert she'll be performing at in the Spanish city. The 23-year-old wore a black, drop-waist knee-length dress by local Barcelona brand Gimaguas, which she paired with Frye moto boots (specifically, the Campus 14L style), Ray-Ban sunglasses, and a handbag from the Rixo x Dragon Diffusion collaboration. Everyone's talking about the bag in fashion RN, but it was her dress-and-boots combo that immediately caught my eye.

Everyone expects people to style a summer dress like hers with flip-flops or strappy sandals, but her choice to trade them in for edgy boots made her look cooler and more interesting.

Alexa Chung is stylish year-round, but I have to say, when she touches down for Paris Fashion Week, her outfits seem to reach their peak. Attending the Chloé A/W '26 runway show this week, Chung skipped over last spring’s favourite shade of butter yellow and instead stepped out in the prettiest wash of pink.

Opting for a lighter shade with a soft peach undertone, Chung tapped into one of the chicest ways to wear the sugary shade right now. Her gently draped dress, which fell just to the knee, featured contrast white lace trims and a delicate bow embellishment, adding a romantic, vintage feel to the summery dress. Styled with light beige heels, the outfit felt fresh, polished and spring-ready, and inspired me to rethink my own spring palette.

Attending the same show, Olivia Rodrigo stepped out in the very same peachy-pink tone, doubling down on the shade that’s quickly emerging as one to watch for the season ahead.

Unlike butter yellow—which, whilst joyful, can feel a touch too bright for those with a more pared-back approach to summer dressing—this softer pink reads more like a neutral. Its muted peach undertone makes it far easier to weave into an everyday wardrobe. It works beautifully worn head-to-toe in tonal layers, but looks equally chic styled with blue denim or rich grey shades for contrast.

While last year’s spring palette leaned a little more vibrant, I have a feeling it will be this more grown-up take on pink that truly takes off this season.

If you've been reading Who What Wear lately, chances are that you've already ordered a pair of bootcut jeans. We've been talking about them a lot because people have been wearing them a lot. Celebrities, in particular, have fully embraced the comeback style this year, and Olivia Rodrigo is the latest to join her fellow It girls, such as Bella Hadid and Elsa Hosk.

I chose to show you the bootcut-jeans outfit Rodrigo wore this week while out in NYC because she cracked the code to making bootcut jeans look pretty. (If anyone can, it's her.) If you’re looking to refresh your spring denim rotation, I have just one recommendation: cigarette jeans. After seasons dominated by puddling hems and ultra-baggy silhouettes, the pendulum is swinging back, and slim-fitting, slightly cropped cigarette jeans are reclaiming their place as the fashion person's favourite.

Streamlined, but not fussy, this neater silhouette is easier to dress up than slouchy styles, whilst also lending itself to a broader range of occasions. Making my case, Olivia Rodrigo was spotted out this week in a mid-blue pair cropped just above the ankle, cut in a clean stovepipe fit, which she wore styled simply with a white T-shirt layered beneath a black fur-trimmed jacket.

Of course, it was her footwear choice that really caught my eye. Rather than reaching for trainers or barely-there heels, Rodrigo grounded her jeans with glossy black square-toe boots. The structured shape bridged the flash of skin that the cropped hemline would otherwise reveal, creating a smooth, uninterrupted line from hip to toe. The music world's biggest stars showed out last night, arriving at the 2026 Grammys in a glamorous mix of custom Valentino (Sabrina Carpenter), custom Chanel (Olivia Dean), and (of course) custom Roberto Cavalli (Doechii). If there's one word to describe winter 2026 hair trends, it's nostalgia—think Old Hollywood updos and pixies, '60s-inspired baby bangs, '90s-coded bobs, and swoopy, '80s side parts. "It’s been out of the spotlight for a while, but with fashion ads and editorial shoots nodding to the '80s, it’s popping up again on all the cool kids."

Olivia Dean—singer-songwriter and bonafide cool kid—is arguably the biggest champion of the '80s side-part revival, as it's become somewhat of a signature style for the 26-year-old star. I've learned the hard way on far too many occasions that if my ears are cold, everything will be cold. Needless to say, a winter hat is a necessity, preferably a chic one. Just like everyone else, my mind immediately goes to beanies when I think of warm winter hats, but there's a new hat trend to try this season, and it's become such a thing that I think it might be one of the biggest accessory trends of winter 2025, period. The trend is wool bucket hats, and even Olivia Rodrigo just wordlessly shared how she feels about it by posting a photo to her Instagram in which she wore a black winter-friendly bucket hat with a long puffer coat.

Aside from Rodrigo's recent endorsement, wool bucket hats (especially black felted ones without seams) have been populating my Instagram feed in recent weeks. And Kendall Jenner has been wearing this exact style on repeat. Fittingly, I've also come across plenty of them among retailers' new arrivals across the internet as of late. The style is reminiscent of a cloche hat, with a bell shape and a small brim, and it gives any outfit it's paired with a cool vintage feel. Plus, one of the best things about this particular hat style is that it won't do that smushed, staticky thing to your hair that beanies do.

If you know anything about Olivia Rodrigo's style, you're probably aware that she loves polka-dot dresses. In fact, they're kind of her signature style at this point. The polka-dot trend is a classic, but the print is more of a summer look. With fall on the horizon, in-the-know people such as Rodrigo are ready to swap it for a more autumn-friendly print trend. In reality, this is the seventh day in a row that the city I live in has been under a heat advisory warning, but mentally, I've started to move on to fall—especially in terms of everything I'm buying. August is when I really start thinking about what I'm going to buy for fall, and if you're on the same page, Olivia Rodrigo just presented us all with a worthy first sweater purchase of the season.

When it comes to influential It girls who often look like they stepped right out of the '90s or early 2000s, Rodrigo instantly comes to mind. And the fall sweater trend she just wore while out in London's Notting Hill was as authentically '90s as it gets. With her flouncy black miniskirt and ballet flats, Rodrigo wore a leopard-print cardigan. In fact, it was quite similar to the one Cameron Diaz wore to the Romeo + Juliet premiere in 1996.

I think we can all agree that Olivia Rodrigo is good at a lot of things. One of her many talents is finding cool '90s fashion trends to revive.
