If you’re going to brave the cold by wearing heels, there’s only one shoe trend that could make it worth it. The ever-so-stylish Nina Debrov just wore a pair of heels in a print that's still trending for winter: snakeskin. While recently out and about in Greenwich Village, Dobrev wore an all-black winter outfit that was chic, but would've looked a bit more boring if she'd worn a pair of shoes other than the ones she opted for.

Dobrev's look consisted of a long black coat, black wide-leg pants, and a white striped button-down. She added a sleek white woven Bottega Veneta Notte dustbag over her shoulder, and of course, for the pop of color, her snakeskin heels. While it may depend on how cold it is and how much of the cold you can take, this look is still cozy with a touch of elegance and whimsy you need to get through the shorter days. Actress Nina Dobrev and Olympic snowboarder Shaun White are engaged! The pair just announced their happy news on their respective Instagram accounts with celebratory photos of the proposal, and the photos of the occasion (captured by photographer Andrew Arthur) give us a clear view of the stunning engagement ring. I find that celebrities tend to favor large rings that are modern twists on a classic style, and that's exactly what Dobrev's is. It's not just any classic style—it's perhaps the favorite style among the celebrity set: a cushion-cut oval ring atop a thin band.

A few other celebrities with iconic oval engagement rings are Hailey Bieber, Blake Lively, and Kourtney Kardashian, and the list is even longer. A big part of the appeal of oval-cut rings is that they'll never go out of style, they're incredibly elegant and elongating, and they're even known to appear larger than round-cut diamonds of the same carat weight.

Serious question: Is there anything Nina Dobrev can’t do? I’m sure there’s something, but you’d be hard-pressed to find it among her ever-expanding list of recreational activities (think snowboarding, surfing, and swimming with tiger sharks), fashion and beauty risks (she’ll cut bangs on a whim and loves a daring sheer moment), and professional pursuits. Her many hats include actor, producer, writer, director, and co-founder of Fresh Vine Wine. Dobrev is the ultimate adventure-seeking chameleon, which makes following her life, career, and fashion choices perpetually interesting—you never know what she might do next. 

"I like to have variety in my life,” confirms Dobrev from her Los Angeles home. For the better part of 18 years, the 35-year-old has been moving seamlessly from one genre to the next on-screen, mixing it up between cult-favorite TV projects like Degrassi and Vampire Diaries, thrilling dramas, laugh-out-loud romantic comedies, and big-budget action films like this month’s The Bricklayer. And then there are her producer credits, which range from the shark conservation documentary Fin to the indie flick Sick Girl. For Dobrev, there is no tried-and-true formula for picking the right project to be a part of. Yes, she’s gotten more selective with time, a good and natural progression she’d argue, but for a script to be right and for her to want to invest her time, three things must always align. "It either has to be a good director or a director who I want to work with and/or give a chance to if it’s a first-time director,” Dobrev says. "The character has to be a good character that has an arc that changes and that grows from beginning to end. And then the writing has to be good.” Bonus points if it’s something she’s never done before. 

The trifecta of a great director, script, and character plus the bonus were all there for one of her latest projects—Sick Girl, in which Dobrev served as lead actor and executive producer. The film is the little engine that could. With only a $500,000 budget and an 11-day shooting schedule, the project by first-time director Jennifer Cram was a full-on labor of love for everyone involved. "I’m pretty sure everyone took a loss to be a part of it, which is so amazing, and we’re so grateful to everyone who did that because we really wanted to support Jennifer Cram,” Dobrev shares. The film suffered some post-production delays from COVID but was released in theaters and on digital platforms last October. 

To this day, Sick Girl remains a project close to Dobrev’s heart. The film follows Wren Pepper, a 30-something woman who feels her closest friends drifting away, and in an attempt to keep them together, she tells a white lie that quickly spirals out of control. "I’ve been a part of really amazing projects, but this one stuck out to me because the character is a more complicated person,” says Dobrev. "She does unlikable things and is flawed in a lot of ways and makes some poor decisions that lead her down an unhealthy path, so I really was intrigued and interested and excited to sink my teeth into something a little bit meatier and a lot different than anything I’ve ever done before.” 

Dobrev wanted to get involved and meet Cram as soon as she read the script. The two sat down at a restaurant and connected immediately. Instead of your standard power lunch intro, they spent a solid three hours talking. "She’s just a straight shooter. She’s a girl’s girl. She’s very direct and knows what she wants. She’s a hustler. So in a lot of ways, she reminded me of myself,” Dobrev says.

In Wren, Cram sheds light on something we all experience as part of #adulting: Our friends come and go as we reach different life stages. While Wren’s intentions for wanting to keep things as they once were are righteous, her way of going about it—lying about having cancer—is undoubtedly flawed. Wren’s actions are cringeworthy at best, but at the root of her questionable decision-making is a relatable character. "When you’re playing a character, you can’t judge them,” says Dobrev of her feelings toward Wren. "At the end of the day, everything leads to love, whether it’s self-love or love you’re looking for in a partnership or friendship, and all we want as humans and humanity is to be loved.” 

Dobrev continues, "I think the biggest issue and what Wren runs into in this movie is that she starts to notice that they don’t have as much in common in terms of interest, in terms of lifestyles and activities. Their lives are just wildly different. She needs to either let the friendships go, or what she’s faced with is growing up and restructuring her life in a more healthy way.”

Juggling the ebbs and flows of adult friendships is something Dobrev knows well. "People come into your life for a reason, a season, or a lifetime,” she says. For Dobrev, whose life and schedule are as busy and unpredictable as it gets, planning has always been key to cultivating deeper relationships. She’s great with a schedule and makes a point to pencil in time with friends when she’s in their area. FaceTime and social media have been a big help too. "I’m very lucky I have incredible friendships,” Dobrev says. "They are also very understanding of the fact that we’re not going to be the kind of friends who talk every single day about every single thing.”

Dobrev is nothing if not a realist, and she’s definitely not one to beat around the bush. It’s that directness that makes her such a great friend, actor, and producer and what also attracts her to like-minded creative folks such as Cram and stylist Kate Young. "I say how I feel, and I don’t sugarcoat too much, and that’s both my Achilles heel and one of my greatest assets,” she says. 

Young, like Dobrev, is straightforward and direct, and that kind of personality can come in handy when the right red carpet look is on the line. The A-list stylist, who also works with Dakota Johnson, Michelle Williams, and Julianne Moore, has been an ideal match for the actor, both in personality and fashion tastes. Dobrev can confidently say that her style has evolved dramatically since the two started working together. She cringes thinking back on some of her earlier red carpet looks. "I don’t know why nobody had an intervention with me,” she laughs. These days, the two have fun playing with a variety of styles and silhouettes, whether it’s a stunning gold sequin gown for the CFDA Fashion Awards, a leggy skirt-and-blazer combo by Nensi Dojaka, or an unexpected Chanel denim-on-denim look. Again, is there anything Dobrev can’t do? Young has been instrumental in creating a more elevated and chic vibe for Dobrev. "She’s the ultimate cool girl,” she says of Young. We can say the same about Dobrev.

One scroll through Instagram this weekend—whether you're a fan of Formula One like I am or only know of the racing competition because the icon for its docuseries Drive to Survive pops up on Netflix (likely after you wrapped up Beckham)—and you no doubt caught a glimpse of the happenings around the Las Vegas Grand Prix. That's because in addition to the sport growing at a record pace in the U.S. thanks to the series, countless fashion collabs, F1 content creators, and more, celebrities and influencers were a dime a dozen during the three-day race weekend at pop-ups, parties, and, of course, the track, which took over the Las Vegas strip, spanning Treasure Island to Planet Hollywood, past the Mirage, Bellagio, and Cosmopolitan casinos. Even Monaco, one of the oldest and most prestigious F1 venues, doesn't bring in the caliber of names that Las Vegas did this weekend. 

Mercedes AMG Petronas driver and seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton led the charge as he so often does, rocking up to the paddock for media day wearing an all-black Valentino look from the house's S/S 24 menswear collection, with a pearl choker from the brand as well as Versace boots. (If you're a fan of Hamilton's style, follow @hamazinglew on Instagram to be the first to know when a new look drops.) The following day, he wore another runway look, this time from Pharrell's S/S 24 collection for Louis Vuitton with IWC's Pilot's Perpetual Calendar Top Gun Lake Tahoe watch and Bottega Veneta's drop aviators (that Kendall Jenner was just seen wearing as well). Lewis Hamilton Fashion Week, as some online have penned the weekend, continued with custom Bottega Veneta, custom Burberry by Daniel Lee, and a custom Las Vegas–inspired bomber jacket by Donatella Versace herself. "A true Versace man: Bold, fearless and with amazing style," Versace captioned a photo of the jacket on Instagram. "I looooove that jacket on you, Lewis Hamilton. Always on your team!"

But Hamilton's always showing up to the track clad in designer 'fits thanks to his daring sense of style and the work of his stylist, Eric McNeal. Others, like A$AP Rocky and Rihanna, aren't around as often. But given that Rocky was just appointed creative director of F1's partnership with Puma, he was expected to arrive dressed to the nines in his debut collection for the brand, especially since he attended the Miami Grand Prix back in June. Rihanna—clad in runway Prada and Balenciaga, Gucci accessories, and a custom Jacob & Co. watch anklet (!!)—was a delightful surprise. Event after event, the musician and Fenty Beauty founder delivered in the style department, proving my own theory that F1 weekends are the new fashion week, with drivers and attendees alike placing emphasis on style when the lights go out. Except instead of two months per year, the season runs all the way from March to November with up to 23 races in total, meaning there's really no end to the sartorial possibilities when it comes to F1.

They might have only just ended, but the 2010s were riddled with beauty trends you have probably already forgotten (even if your Facebook memories try their hardest not to let you). Beauty has always been a means of self-expression, but thanks to social media, it became even more of a space to make a statement, large or small. Platforms like Instagram and Pinterest became a go-to source to discover new ideas, reveal new haircuts, swap recommendations, and share opinions on the latest looks, for better or worse. Some might be long gone (we hardly knew ye, strobing), but others, like clean beauty, have surpassed "trend” to become movements that we’ll continue to see in the industry for years to come.

Celebs have been putting their names on fragrances for decades, but in the 2010s, the branding bubble exploded. Kylie Cosmetics made Kylie Jenner a billionaire, while Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty became a best seller at Sephora, largely thanks to the brand’s inclusive and extensive shade ranges.

2. Contouring

The concept of using makeup to exaggerate and visually sharpen the angles on one’s face using different shades of makeup, contouring skyrocketed in popularity thanks, again, to Kim Kardashian West, who shared her technique on Instagram.

3. Strobing

The shiny stepsister to contouring, strobing involved piling on the highlighter to play up the cheekbones, as Gigi Hadid demonstrated at a 2015 event.

Toward the end of the decade, makeup became more subdued as people started eschewing overdone looks in favor of going natural—or even sans makeup altogether, which BFFs Drew Barrymore and Cameron Diaz did in this gorgeous selfie.

Everyone put down their tweezers (and began cringing at their overly groomed early aughts brows), thanks to brow-endowed celebs like Cara Delevingne and Lily Collins.

Pinterest opened our eyes to a wide world of braids we never knew existed before—from fishtails to Dutch braids to braided headbands.

Beginning around 2012, it became a rite of passage for every celeb to dye their hair a different shade of the rainbow.

Another Pinterest-fueled obsession, legions of women suddenly let their hair get dramatically lighter from root to tip on purpose, inspired by the likes of Chrissy Teigen.

Whether it’s at our local coffee shop or on a night out, there’s nothing better than seeing first-hand how L.A.’s stylish celeb set dresses off-duty—and sharing it with our readers. On that note, today we’ve decided to bring you a next-level city guide of sorts. Not only are these places amazing in their own rights, but an added bonus of each of them is that the odds of a star sighting are extremely high (and we have the pictures to prove it).

Whether they’re just having dinner or are throwing a private party, West Hollywood hot spot The Nice Guy is has been a night-out destination for L.A.’s celebrities since it opened its doors last summer—and we can’t blame them. The upscale Italian food and handcrafted drinks are to die for, and the reservation-only bar and dining room have an intimate, lounge-like atmosphere that’s often accompanied by live music and DJs. From pop stars to Victoria’s Secret angels, everyone is a fan. 

Located on historic shopping street Melrose Place, Alfred Coffee & Kitchen (aka “Alfred”) is as well-known for its people watching and Instagrammability as it is for its coffee and snacks. Whether you stop by in the morning before work or on Sunday while the farmer’s market is going on, you’re sure to spot at least one off-duty celebrity getting their caffeine fix. 

With something for every member of the family, The Brentwood Country Mart is the perfect spot for celebrities with or without their kids. Tucked away in the barn-themed outdoor mall are stores (like Intermix and Jenni Kayne), children’s rides, a candy shop, restaurants, and more. With so much to offer, it’s no wonder Alessandra Ambrosio is a regular visitor.

Between the über-private guest rooms, restaurant, bar, and sheer number of events and afterparties held there, there’s never not a celebrity to be seen at the historic Hollywood hotel Chateau Marmont. If you ask us, it’s best on a sunny L.A. day for lunch in the garden.

Since long before Kim Kardashian dubbed it her favorite restaurant, the cream of L.A.’s celebrity crop has been flocking to Craig’s for its homestyle food and upscale vibe. On any given night, you can find yourself just a booth away from an under-the-radar Oscar winner—probably chatting away with Craig himself, who’s served as the host of his restaurant since it opened four years ago.

Pretty much anyone in L.A. looking to get their shopping fix (or window-shopping fix) heads to Barneys in Beverly Hills—and celebrities are not exempt. With a newly redone rooftop restaurant, personal shopping on the second floor, and a shoe department dreams are made of, going there is more of an activity then an errand. 

Already dubbed the most popular date-night spot for Hollywood celebrities by WWW, there’s a reason no one can get enough of family-operated Italian restaurant Giorgio Baldi. Having been in business for more than 25 years, the dining spot's homemade pastas (and every other dish, really) are done to perfection. Also, it’s beachside and away from Hollywood, which, in L.A., translates to under-the-radar and private. 

There might be some modern trends that folks of yore could never have envisioned—people really wear sneakers with dresses, to dinner?!—but there are a few holdovers from the Golden Age that are still kickin’. First and foremost: the classical system of labelling invites to events with certain dress codes. For us modern women, this ancient system of codes can be quite confusing—after all, we’re used to wearing our sneakers to dinner!

A black-tie event is the epitome of a formal event. Cocktail-length dresses are only allowed if they are extremely dressy and sleek.

What To Wear: A formal, floor-length gown is preferred. Also allowed: a dressy cocktail dress or your best LBD paired with fancier jewellery, which will elevate the overall look.

A black-tie-optional event is still dressy, but not as strict. In other words, you can wear a formal evening gown, but no one will look at you twice if you choose to wear a cocktail dress.

What To Wear: A formal floor-length evening gown, fancier cocktail dress, a tux-style pantsuit, or LBD.

This is a professional look that isn’t overly dressy. Think: something you could definitely wear to the office (i.e., on the conservative side) but would feel comfortable wearing to grab a work drink.

What To Wear: An open-collar shirt or sweater, with a pencil skirt or trousers. You can also wear a dress, as long as it’s not provocative.

Imagine what you would wear if you were giving a very important presentation at work. That’s essentially how you should dress for a business casual event.

What To Wear: A tailored, polished dress with a blazer, or a pantsuit. Whatever you wear, style it with appropriate heels. This is not the time for flats or super-high club shoes.

Your average brunch look.

What To Wear: A skirt (either long or short) and plain tee, nice jeans with a button-down blouse, or a cotton sundress. Flats are fine.

Think: black tie with some breathing room. Still formal and dressy, but with a smidge of playfulness thrown in.

What To Wear: A dressy cocktail dress, floor-length evening gown, or LBD, plus fun and unique accessories.

Think: Olivia Palermo on just about any given day. A look that is casual, but not at all lazy or frumpy.

What To Wear: A dressy blouse with jeans and heels, a skirt and top set, a crisp pantsuit, or a dress. Flats are acceptable as long as they are not overtly casual (i.e., no sneakers).

As the name suggests, a semiformal event is just that: semi formal. It’s certainly still dressy, but not as much so as a black-tie-optional event.

What To Wear: A cocktail dress, LBD, floor-length skirt and blouse in appropriate fabrics, like silk, or dressy separates. You can also wear a long dress if you wish.

This is the most extravagant of all the dress codes—perhaps that’s why this year’s Met Gala utilised it. Think: full ball gown, elbow-length gloves, and all your best jewellery.

What To Wear: A floor-length evening gown (mandatory), gloves (optional), and your best jewellery. Your dress should incorporate luxe fabrications, like lace, silk, and chiffon. 

As the name suggests, this is a dressy event that is still meant to be primarily social and enjoyable.

What To Wear: A cocktail dress (obviously), LBD, or a shorts suit in more formal fabrications, plus a sleek pair of heels. Flats are not recommended, but can work in certain situations.
