After spending a summer in New York City, you realise that not only are the fashion set of the Big Apple exceptional at dressing, but there are a multitude of fashion subsets to pull inspiration from. Upper East Side style is undoubtedly one of the most iconic.

Though I can't say I've watched many episodes of Gossip Girl (this may be a crime), having lived in New York, I too frequently sat on the steps of The Met with friends to do plenty of people-watching, taking in the uniforms of the suburb's best-dressed. (And yes, I did come across a few real-life Lily Basses.) For my literary friends, it's the backdrop of Sylvia Plath's The Bell Jar and where Holly Golightly from Breakfast at Tiffany's lived. It's where Joan Didion once resided and wrote. From wandering its 37 blocks myself, I quickly learned that this area certainly lives up to its high-fashion reputation.

Like much of New York City, the Upper East Side fashion sense is renowned. Its streets hold a long history of luxury retail and fashion. It's home to none other than iconic shopping epicentre Madison Avenue, after all, and it has held this sartorial charm since the early 1900s. Running alongside Central Park, the UES contains an immense number of impeccably dressed folks clacking in heels, adorned in stacks of jewellery and carrying the most beautiful handbags.

You'll notice their propensity to spot trends and wear them in the most spectacular of ways. Just when you've settled into leopard or zebra print, you'll be convinced by an Upper East Sider to give Dalmatian spots a try. They're perfectly fluent in styling long-standing wardrobe staples, too. I'd try something similar to New York-based fashion editor Coco Schiffer's look, and mix two colours that seem unexpected but look wonderfully cohesive and complementary (tomato red and chocolate brown).

Style Notes: As a fashion intern living in New York trying to find my way, I encountered a very stylish high-ranking magazine editor in my office stating that canvas tote bags were a no-go and structured handbags were everything. A top-handle clutch with a structured shape is exactly the type of accessory you need for continued elegance. It's subtler than cow print, but still a stand-out with its minimal black-and-white colours and soft spots. Living in New York City, I quickly learned that there's a set of go-to relaxing weekend trips within a certain distance—the places New Yorkers head to escape the city for a change of pace. Of course, we all know the Hamptons, and Hudson or Beacon upstate; they're common knowledge. Even the Poconos in Pennsylvania, or Nantucket, Martha's Vineyard, the Cape, or the Berkshires in Massachusetts. But when I first moved here years ago, I hadn't yet heard of the under-the-radar destinations on the North Fork of Long Island.

While the Hamptons are on the South Fork, made up of East Hampton and part of Southampton, the North Fork is a 30-mile-long peninsula with a collection of quaint towns, including the charming seaside village of Greenport. With influencers flocking to Surf Lodge in Montauk, the North Fork is almost like the sleepier, underrated alternative.

Greenport's Chicest Hotel

As I planned my trip, I knew there was one place I wanted to stay: The Sound View. The waterfront hotel has a private beach, which was my very first stop after checking in and dropping off my bags. I've never been to the French Riviera (though it's high on my list), but I imagined this is what it feels like—an intimate, blissful pebble beach. I fell asleep quickly to the sound of the waves, waking up completely relaxed.

The property has everything you need on-site: a pool, a restaurant and bar, complimentary bikes, and a thoughtfully curated gift shop with things like Only Hearts pajamas, Flamingo Estate candles, and Garrett Leight sunglasses.

From the hotel, it's a short drive into a very walkable downtown area with a cluster of shops and restaurants all within one square mile, as well as the lovely 67 Steps Beach. Whether you want a trip of total downtime spent entirely at the hotel without having to leave at all or prefer to bop around, you can do either.

To get there, I took the Hampton Jitney from Midtown, which took less than three hours, but you could also take the Long Island Rail Road or drive. I went without a car and got around just fine using Ubers.

Dining in Greenport

My favorite meal of the trip was dinner at The Halyard, the hotel's restaurant. I got the chicken and trout, and both were incredible. I also loved the chocolate cake and cookies for dessert. Between The Halyard (which recently added a brunch on Saturdays and Sundays), poolside options at Jack's Shack, and room service, you could easily spend your entire trip eating there.

If you do want to venture out, for breakfast and lunch, there's Pip’s Café & Provisions, Nookies, and Bruce & Son. For dinner, Noah’s, Ellen’s on Front, 1943 Pizza Bar, or American Beech. If you love raw bars, Little Creek Oyster Farm & Market is really popular, Ralph’s Famous Italian Ices of Greenport has my favorite ice cream, and the Greenport Farmers Market is on Saturdays.

In the neighboring towns, I'd recommend North Fork Table & Inn, which also runs a weekend food truck that has smash burgers and lobster rolls, as well as Southold Social for farm-to-table dining. For casual, fresh seafood, go to Braun Seafood Co. and Southold Fish Market. Other noteworthy options include North Fork Roasting Co., Country Corner Cafe, and Little Fish.

For a day trip, you can also easily take the ferry to Shelter Island. Get breakfast at Stars Cafe, or relax in an Adirondack chair with a gorgeous view at The Pridwin hotel and eat at its restaurant called The Terrace. Across the street, it's quite the scene at the bar at Sunset Beach Hotel in front of Crescent Beach. And Marie Eiffel Market is a French-inspired café, bakery, and market where you can grab snacks for the beach or eat-in on the dockside.

Greenport Packing Tips

In theory, a two-night trip doesn't require much packing, but I somehow always manage to overpack. If I had to whittle my suitcase down to just a few things for a weekend beach getaway, I'd choose my Cou Cou Intimates dresses. For swimwear, I've been loving my jewel-toned green Baserange one-piece paired with a Fella Swim sarong. Los Angeles Apparel jelly flats were my go-to shoes since they're easy to wear both on and off the beach, and I always make sure I bring a claw clip to put by hair up and a hat for shade.

As for bags, my nylon one from the Parisian brand Kabas makes the perfect summer tote since it's waterproof. In the evening, I wore my baguette bag from the Los Angeles label Are Studio. And although I have a large collection of sunglasses, I only brought one pair this trip: my sold-out, oversize Giada frames from Chimi.

For beauty, I packed my Leatherology croc-effect travel case with Sofie Pavitt cleanser and gel moisturizer, EltaMD face sunscreen, Vacation body sunscreen, Ciele tinted serum foundation, a Kate McLeod mini body stone, and Rōz leave-in conditioner and hair oil. For my lip combo, I brought the cult-favorite MAC Whirl lip liner and Crème in Your Coffee lipstick.

Few brands do summer quite like Posse. The Australian label has been a longtime favorite among editors and insiders for its minimalist aesthetic that's sophisticated and classic, but always cool. It was founded in Sydney in 2016, but the brand's undeniably viral moment came in 2023 when Sofia Grainge wore a white linen maxi skirt and waistcoat set during her wedding weekend in the south of France, promptly selling out the style and putting the brand on a much larger map.

Now, Posse has opened its doors with a permanent retail space in New York, and I knew I had to go in-person to try on all the new arrivals. The store is situated on a particularly charming strip of Bleecker Street in the West Village that's basically made for an afternoon of strolling and browsing. I visited when the pre-fall 2026 collection has just arrived, and was lucky to be one of the first to try on all the pretty pieces. From vacation-coded linen and poplin pieces to the dress I'd suggest to anyone with a late-summer or fall wedding on the calendar, see everything I tried on and loved.

Esme Mini Dress

As soon as I walked in, I felt an immediate pull towards the rack of crinkled-silk pieces in a range of soft pastels. The pre-fall '26 arrivals include several dresses and separates cut from this pretty fabric, and my pick was the Esme Mini Dress, a high-neck sleeveless dress. It comes in a pale shade of blue-gray and, most importantly, comes with a matching scarf. I love a piece that can be styled in multiple ways, and the scarf can be worn as a tie belt, a neck scarf, or any number of creative uses that reimagine the dress in new ways.

There's also a longer Esme dress that would be perfect for a late-summer or fall wedding.

Tabitha Maxi Dress

Maybe it's because my group chat had been floating the idea of a last-minute trip to Sardinia in August, but this dress had me channeling major "vacationing in Italy" energy. Cut from a sturdy linen and featuring the most delicate lace trimming along the edges, I felt like I was wearing a vintage caftan that I sourced on said trip to Italy or found preserved in the back of my grandmother's closet.

I think it speaks for itself, but the store associate who was helping me suggested trying it with the ivory tassel belt, and I loved how elegant it looked styled that way, too. I have the tassel belt in black already, and it's such a great styling piece that I've been wearing with trousers or tied over a jacket, but now I might need to add the lighter version to my closet, too.

Nadine Tee + Nadine Skirt

Since the brand is largely known for its airy and linen and poplin pieces, I was surprised to discover a few items I'd call "cool basics" like this striped tee and matching skirt. Striped tees have been having a big moment this summer, and I loved the colors in this one—a bright blue and chocolate brown—that would work well into the fall paired with denim.

Easy, effortless, and cool—the Veda dress is the perfect example of everything Posse does so well. It's an airy cotton mini that sits away from your body, making it the exact kind of thing I want to reach for the hottest days of the summer or to toss on over a swimsuit and immediately look pulled-together. The best part is, of course, the crochet embroidery at the neckline that gives is a vintage quality. This is the kind of dress you buy once and wear every summer thereafter.

In case it's not clear by now, the brand excels at matching sets, and this halter top-cropped pants combo is a personal favorite. It's the kind of outfit that needs to be on a patio (or better yet, a terrace overlooking the sea) with a colorful spritz and an aperitivo spread in front. At least, that's the energy I was channeling in it! The hand-pleated halter has a nice relaxed fit to it but IMO the pants are the star of the show—a three-quarter length cut that looks like the most elegant take on the bloomer pant trend I've yet to see.

There's a reason why the majority of Posse's tagged photos on Instagram are taken at a chic European beach club—the pieces are basically made for destinations like Saint Tropez and Sicily, and this outfit is chief among them. I've been noticing the quiet rise in caftan-style tops like this, so I knew I wanted to try on the Alfie Blouse. I normally take a medium, but sized down here as it's a wide and relaxed cut and I'm glad I did, the top still had the right proportions.

On the site it's styled with the matching linen pants, but I tried it with the Veda shorts, an easy drawstring style in a crisp poplin that I could see myself reaching for every single weekend for the foreseeable future.

Though we often dream about holidays by the Med or escaping to the countryside, there is a magic to existing in a city throughout the summer—including the summer-in-the-city capsule wardrobes you develop whilst living in a particular place. These are unquestionably stylish and distinctly different depending on the city you live in. Every locale has its own unique way of doing fashion, and making outfits work when faced with scorching temperatures. But with these style perks of city living come difficulties, too.

There are the sweaty commutes that feel even longer during heatwaves. The battle to find peace (and places with air-con) amongst the never-ending stream of tourists. Ahead of my first internship in London many years ago, I decided to make a quick stop in Copenhagen, and I've been yearning to return ever since. In the summer, city dwellers here combine a multitude of chic basics for looks that feel innately elegant. Regardless of season, they know how to execute an outfit that feels effortless yet personal. Exhibit A? The founder of Clòimh, a Scottish-born, Amsterdam-based knitwear brand, Hollie Mercedes Peters, styled a striped shirt with jeans for a timeless combination, but added a chic structured handbag, flip-flops and a studded belt for the perfect level of flair.

5. Lisbon

Style Notes: Portugal has a special place in my heart. When I was running my footwear label, I had shoes handmade by a small family-run factory outside of Porto. It's a vibrant country, and every city I've had the joy of exploring there has always inspired me with its fashionable residents. There's a laidback air that always feels fun, and there's always plenty of colour. Lisbon is particularly stylish, and with my first visit there coming up this September, I've been doing ample research. I love Portuguese fashion creator Barbara Santiago's choice of teal and bold red, which is a vibrant combination for summer wear. The black bag and sandals are perfect for grounding the look, too. The use of colour and pattern has inspired my minimalist heart to pack a little more vibrantly and embrace a bolder palette for the rest of summer.

A few months ago, I wrote an article questioning whether New Yorkers were the "new" French girls. In the story, I claimed that the huge interest in '90s minimalism spawned from Love Story, the hit TV show that depicted the late Carolyn Bessette Kennedy and her husband John F Kennedy Jnr, had inspired an aesthetic amongst fashion insiders in the city that wasn’t too dissimilar from that which we often associate with French women.

Whether or not you agree that one might be replacing the other, there’s no denying the growing movement in fashion that has adopted these same codes of Carolyn’s ‘90s minimalism and French-girl style. Every New York influencer, stylist and editor I follow on Instagram claims the same seeming irreverence to trends and commitment to a timeless, neutral capsule wardrobe of pillbox hats, frog-clasp closures and silk scarf belts that ensure the appearance of effortless elegance at all times. The show began at the start of 2026, right after the peak of quiet luxury, and gave classic dressers a renewed passion for their pared-back sense of style.

Countless publications, Substack writers and online commentators documented the meteoric chokehold "CBK style" had on womenswear earlier this year. Every high-street edit and marketing email came with a subject line around getting the look, and understandably so! Bessette-Kennedy’s uniform of knee-length skirts, white shirts, Levi 501s, minimalist tailoring and dresses from Prada and Calvin Klein (she worked for the brand) was supremely elegant. Sarah Pidgeon, who played her in the show, added fuel to the fire by adopting CBK's low-key, highly effective '90s style off-screen, even dying her hair the same specific shade of blonde.

But as the show ended just in time for spring, the new highly anticipated spring/summer 2026 designer collections dropped. These collections had an occasional whiff of quiet luxury and minimalism here and there, but on the whole they painted a different picture. Texture at Bottega Veneta! Ruffles and tulle at Dior! And sequins, florals, feathers and much, much more at Chanel! Finally, maximalism was back on the menu. And it’s not that minimalists are immediately hanging up their all-black looks, but there has been a notable shift, one that made way for more experimental, eclectic and colourful wardrobes; a wardrobe that one might associate with another very well-dressed, highly referenced New Yorker born with the same initials: Carrie Bradshaw.

Worn by Sarah Jessica Parker but devised by costume designer Patricia Field, Carrie’s style needs no introduction. A longtime champion of Manolo Blahnik shoes and the person who made the Fendi Baguette the first-ever It bag, with each episode of Sex and the City, fans knew to expect the unexpected from her outfits. From the Galliano for Dior newspaper dress and the "naked" DKNY slip she's wearing on the side of the bus to the tulle skirt in the opening credits, she was an advocate for some of today’s most divisive comeback trends, including capri pants (even those in camo print), crop tops, bandanas, boob tubes and exposed bras (always with the exposed bra!). Carrie did it all, whilst almost always in heels and always looking—as she’d say—fabulous.

Today, we might be in the midst of summer 2026, but look around on the streets or in your office, and you could hardly tell. I’d estimate 90% of women dress similarly to one of these two iconic New York women of the '90s. The Carrie Bradshaws (CB) of today are those diving into mermaidcore colour palettes, likely having a "Pucci summer" and no doubt invested in one of the latest re-edition designer handbags like the Saint Laurent Mombasa, the Gucci Indy, the Fendi Baguette or the Chloé Paddington. The Carolyn Bessette Kennedy (CBK) gang, however, wear new styles from contemporary luxury brands like Toteme, Khaite and The Row. They’ll be in tailored skirt suits, tank tops with jeans and a thong wedge sandal, and maybe a pair of Celine sunglasses with a black headband for good measure.

Sure, there are some overlaps in their style; some of Carrie’s most-loved outfits were surprisingly low-key (the white bias-cut silk dress when she sees Big outside his engagement party at The Plaza), but those are few and far between. It’s deeper than just minimalist vs. maximalist, timeless vs. trending. Carolyn had a uniform, but if one tried to give the same to Carrie, she’d have it tailored into a miniskirt and put a Tory Burch brooch on it. Where Carrie was appealing because she tried (who else wears heels with athletic shorts for a dog walk?), Carolyn was appealing because she didn’t. Effortlessness was essential to her aloof sense of cool.

And before you tell me that New York style can’t be categorised just by these two women, that I’m forgetting many other well-dressed NYC celebrity inhabitants like Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, Chloë Sevigny and Zoë Kravitz, to name a few, I know, but they weren’t born with the same initials, so they don’t count here.

It’s my job to notice when something starts popping up in slightly niche ways. I’ve gotten to the point where I identify what someone’s wearing on the street in my head all the time: “Those are Levi's 501 '90s ankle length,” or “That skirt is from Cou Cou.” My best instance might be asking a server if her nail polish was Essie's Clam Bake a few summers ago and getting a pleasantly surprised, "Yes, how did you know that?" Most recently, the latest thing I’ve been clocking are personalized canvas tote bags and colorful leather ballet flats from Alex Mill all over New York City.

As I looked into it, the label first started in the Lower East Side in 2012 with the idea of making the perfect shirt. No amount of planning can ever fully prepare you for the reality of traveling somewhere new for an extended period of time. At least, that's been my experience as a nouveau expat who has swapped the bustling streets of New York for Paris's cobbled sidewalks. When one of my friends told me she was moving to New York from the Midwest, my first thought was, "What are you packing?" Stepping out for a Fendi event in New York this week, actor Amelie Zilber elevated her pencil skirt and classic black heels with a sleek pair of semi-sheer black socks.

It was while I was sat scrolling through the spring/summer '26 fashion shows that a thought suddenly came to me: where exactly were the wearabie clothes? As a fashion editor, I often look to the runways for inspiration first, and whether that might be spotting a colour, print, or silhouette that I know will be huge, I'm often drawn to the pieces that shout the loudest for the talking point alone, but it's rare that what we actually wear reflects the runway.

Even as we avidly discuss red carpet style in the wake of events season, it's not what celebrities are wearing to events that truly influence our wardrobes, it's what they're wearing on the streets the morning after. Think Jennifer Lawrence, Zoe Kravitz, Emily Ratajkowski, and Katie Holmes on their coffee runs and dog walks, the celebrities who are the best dressed are the ones who are seen to be doing the least. French women may have been known for 'chic sans effort', but the West Village A-list need a whole new phrase for their approach to cool-meets-comfort.

So what exactly makes up the West Village wardrobe? In short, the opposite of 2026's biggest runway trends. While most designers are championing the ultra-feminine and ultra-polished 'ladylike' look (think knee length skirts, kitten heels and cropped cardigans), in New York baggy fits and flats are top of the agenda. You don’t have to be an ENT specialist to understand that scent is the most transportational of the human senses. Sure, hearing the right beach song might drift you to your happy place, but nothing zaps you back to a specific moment in time—or plants you into situations you’ve never lived—faster than fragrance. Triple-board-certified neurologist Leah Croll, MD, previously explained this phenomenon to Who What Wear, saying that scent has such a profound impact on memory because of its direct link to the human brain.

“There is an incredibly short distance between smell neurons in the nose and the emotional and memory centers in the brain,” she states. “No other sense is processed on that kind of ‘expressway.’ The result is that scent isn’t just perceived; it’s felt.” The cold, hard fact that scent can transform and transport is exactly what drives the trailblazing fragrance brand Discothèque to create the unique concoctions that it's slowly becoming famous for.

What Is Discothèque?

Born and raised between Los Angeles and London, the young fragrance brand—incepted in 2024—sits at the crossroads of beauty and nightlife. Cofounders Jessie Willner, 32, and Hanover Booth, 37, describe their personal and business relationship as “cosmic,” not only because they spent years traveling the globe together through work in the fashion industry or because they became fast friends in their teenage years, but because they found out years later that their respective parents had dated each other once upon a time. “We always say we should have been sisters, and now we kind of are,” Willner jokingly tells Who What Wear.

Willner goes on to explain that Discothèque was essentially a “passion project taken too far.” The duo, who previously worked together at Willner’s luxury outerwear brand, The Mighty Company, were enamored by their shared memories on random dance floors scattered across the globe. “We wanted to bottle that feeling,” Willner wistfully explains. The pair’s goal became creating something that could either whisk you back to a specific moment in time—sweat, champagne foam, falling confetti, and all—or inspire you to make incredible new memories with friends, lovers, and strangers alike.

“Every fragrance starts with a club, feeling, city, song, etc., that holds significance, whether personally or culturally,” she explains. “Then we narrow it down to a night or even an exact moment, real or imagined, within that world. A secret encounter in a coat check, the dawn at first light.” These world-building moments help the visionaries select their notes, create layering acts, and build an eccentric fragrance wardrobe.
