There's no denying that making plans in winter can be tricky. Leaving heated homes to venture out into the cold can make it more tempting to send those "sorry, I've double-booked myself” messages. Ever since Sophia Amoruso first started the brand in 2012, Nasty Gal has been a poignant memory of my early adulthood. It was like a prelude to the wave of Instagram brands we see a lot of now—where buying into the biggest social media–driven trends is only a matter of opening an app. When I was a college student on a shoestring budget, Nasty Gal was a regular part of my wardrobe, especially when club-hopping was on the agenda. Then, through a series of unfortunate events, the company went bankrupt in 2016 and later became another retail arm of Boohoo's fashion empire.

Since its demise, I admittedly forgot about it. A slew of trendy, affordable fashion brands launched in the meantime, and I started to look elsewhere. But as shopping became a part of my daily routine as a market editor, Nasty Gal became a name that repeatedly blipped across my radar again. In the years since I last shopped the site, it's undergone a transformation. The selection has become more "adult" with more timeless staples, and the brand has revved up its offerings with the addition of timely collaborations. (Celebrity stylist Maeve Reilly's collab was the most recent.) Ultimately, the refocus from teeny-bopper fashions to more elevated trends compelled me to give it another chance and see if it's another brand I should add to my current shopping Rolodex. 

To give me (and all of you, of course) an idea, I ordered a bunch of items and took them on a test run. For my honest thoughts and a review of which finds came out on top, keep scrolling.

Oversized Faux-Leather Zip Aviator Jacket

I'm calling this jacket the crown jewel of this entire haul. Why? The second I put it on, the compliments started rolling in. Even my trend-savvy co-workers thought it was an expensive shearling jacket. The faux leather is so buttery soft, and the construction is so good that it looks way more expensive than it is. I'm so head over heels for this jacket, and I've even contemplated buying a second one as a backup. In short, I can't recommend this enough, especially since it's now less than $90.

Seam-Detail Midi Dress

I've been obsessed with exposed-seam clothes for a bit, so once I spotted this dress on the site, I clicked on it immediately. Although the material is not the softest, it is surprisingly thick, and I didn't find it necessary to wear a slip at all. So far, I've worn it out to weekend brunch with friends, on a dinner date, and to a few work events with no complaints. Of the haul, this dress ranked high on my list of favorites. 

Faux-Leather Split-Hem Pants

Being a curvy girl, I take a deep breath every time I try a new pair of pants from a brand I'm unfamiliar with. Honestly, I had low expectations before I slipped these on, but wow, I was impressed. The quality rivals some of the best affordable faux-leather pants I've tried, and I definitely appreciated the added stretch. I usually don't go for light-colored leather, but I've been wearing these nonstop.

Oversized Faux-Leather Trench Coat

I really didn't need another leather trench coat, but what can I say? I'm obsessed. I will say that this one is unlike any other I own due to its padded shoulders. The addition of an exaggerated shoulder gives this trench a more designer feel, adding structure to an otherwise unstructured piece. The faux leather on this coat is a little shinier than genuine leather, but in the right shade (I'd recommend brown), it can pass for a more expensive piece.

Recycled Maxi Dress and Cropped Cardigan Set

I'm all for cozy sets right now, and a shrug-dress combo seems like a perfect pairing for looking elevated without an actual waistband. Ultimately, you'd never guess this was only $33 just by how comfy and soft the knit material is. The slit is a little high, so be prepared to show off your best pair of boots or heels. 

Herringbone Tailored Suit

There's always a time and place where a cool suit is necessary, so I ordered this with the intent of it being my go-to laid-back event outfit. Both the pants and blazer run more oversize than the standard, so keep that in mind if you end up adding this to your closet. I love that I can wear the pieces separately or together for a cool-girl combo.

Tailored Wide-Leg High-Waisted Pants

Simple tailored pants are a huge thing right now, but finding the right pair is not as simple as it seems. While I appreciate the high waist on these, I came away wishing the material was a little more structured like a pair of suit trousers. The placement of the pleats also wasn't my favorite, but I wonder if sizing up could eliminate the problem of the gathered pleats. All in all, these are solid for relaxed days when you want to look a step up from wearing sweatpants.

We’re into that funny time of year when it’s not quite warm and it’s not quite time to layer up for winter. (Autumn. That’ll be it.) And although we love this season for the leaves (the leaves!), transitional dressing can be difficult. But let’s look at the positives: It’s the perfect temperature for wearing a blazer without a coat over it, you can still wear a dress with chunky boots and no tights, and if you go out for the evening you can get away with a slinky outfit (and maybe a leather jacket) without the risk of freezing.

Luckily, Nasty Gal has just launched a new drop of transitional pieces, and it’s as if the brand knew we were in need of inspiration. There’s a healthy dose of cosy autumn staples, including some perfect knit dresses, relaxed tailored suits and a grey coat just begging to be taken on all those crisp walks. But the drop also nods to the upcoming festivities, with a great selection of going-out outfits, including understated slip dresses and nice tops to pair with jeans. Sophia Amoruso’s entrepreneurial career has been in the spotlight since her 2006 eBay store took off and became the pioneering online retailer, and phenomenon, Nasty Gal. The brand expanded beyond its initial collection of vintage to include curated designer pieces, as well as its own in-house label, and by 2015, Nasty Gal had grown to over $100 million in revenue. Amoruso was on the cover of Forbes and on Fast Company’s Most Creative People in Business list and was touted as the rags-to-riches, million-dollar millennial #Girlboss—all by the time she was 32. But behind the scenes, Nasty Gal’s rocket-ship growth and $350 million valuation had put immense pressure on the business. "Having a valuation that high that early on was really the first nail in the coffin for us,” Amoruso tells Kerr in the latest episode of Second Life. 

In 2015, Amoruso stepped away from her role as CEO, and the following year, the brand filed for bankruptcy. During that time, however, Amoruso had written the first of her three books, the New York Times best seller #Girlboss, which she turned into her second business a few short months later. Girlboss became a digital community for ambitious women, held highly attended events—Girlboss Rallies—and produced the hit podcast, Girlboss Radio, which garnered over 20 million downloads. "Getting up again, it was so scary, but it was also really therapeutic because I worked through a lot of the things that I know I did wrong at Nasty Gal. And I got a lot of them right at Girlboss,” she says.

After a successful three years scaling the business and an acquisition intended to spur further growth, the 2020 pandemic hit the business especially hard and handed Amoruso, like many CEOs, a set of challenges she never could have prepared for. Revenue came to a screeching halt, including a $10 million deal that was all but a few signatures away from closing. "It just vanished overnight,” says Amoruso. In June, she announced on Instagram that she’d be moving on from Girlboss as the brand downsized and restructured.

Now, just three months later, Amoruso is using her hard-earned experience as a founder, CEO, and serial brand builder to inform a new project, Business Class. The in-depth online entrepreneurship course is providing the next generation of founders with the tools they need to build and scale businesses positioned for long-term success. The material is dense, but captivating her audience has always been a strength for Amoruso. Plus, it's flight themed. "I'm 36 years old, I've been building businesses for 15 years, I've extracted a lot, and all I want to do is give back,” says Amoruso. "I've stepped in a lot of the land mines. I know how to step over them now.”

While I would hardly call myself a loungewear enthusiast, the recent time spent at home has almost been enough to change my mind. Historically, I have never prioritised the need for elevated or polished-looking loungewear, choosing to instead spend my money on clothing I'd wear outside of the house. While taking in the shows at Paris Fashion Week, Christine Centenera was snapped wearing the shoes of our dreams—they're so special they literally took our breath away. For some women, the concept of dressing “trendy” without spending much money seems impossible; designer garments and accessories feel necessary to echo the high-priced looks of so many of our favorite fashion bloggers. I'm personally a big denim wearer. I don't care what brand I'm wearing, as long as they have a great fit. I've spent way under $100 on some of my favourites pairs of jeans.

I can never have enough white tops in a wide variety of styles. They're something you can wear all year-round. If I love one, often I'll pick up two in different sizes: one for a true fit and the other larger one for an oversized boyfriend or tunic feel. White tops are very versatile and usually quite affordable.

I love a T-shirt that has texture and feels more elevated, but at the same time is extremely easy and comfortable for everyday wear. I stock up on linen and linen-cotton blend T-shirts for that reason. You can certainly find these for a great price in a variety of sleeve lengths, colours, and prints.
