When I think of iconic ‘90s outfits, my mind instantly wanders to a few pivotal points during the decade. There's the '90s fashion cemented in popular culture, like Carrie Bradshaw’s eminently eclectic designer wardrobing on Sex and the City or Monica Geller’s considerate casualness in Friends.

Then there are the runway moments, including but not limited to Versace’s Freedom! Climax in 1991, whereby Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington, Cindy Crawford and Naomi Campbell closed the show dressed in monochromatic shift mini dresses and mouthing the lyrics of George Michael’s anthem, Marc Jacobs’ grunge collection for Perry Ellis in 1994 and Mugler’s haute couture cyborg suit from 1995.

To me, the most iconic ‘90s outfits stand as a time capsule. They reflect what personal style looked like without the influence of niche aesthetics, self-surveilling social media or the ability to commodify your outfit of the day through brand deals and paparazzi shots. As Cindy Crawford said during an interview meditating on her life in looks, “No one put [my outfit] together other than just what I grabbed.”

Anyone who knows me will tell you that I'm definitely a flat-shoe over a heel type of person. I spend an embarrassing amount of time scrolling slack-jawed through red carpet photos and contemplating how celebrities achieve their perfectly luminous, dewy skin. Thankfully, I can categorize my insatiable curiosity as job research since I've been lucky enough to consult the very derms, aestheticians, and makeup artists responsible for those famous complexions. After chatting with many of these professionals about the art of event beauty prep, I've landed on the following thesis: Makeup can do much of the heavy lifting, but never underestimate the power of proper skincare. And when it comes to crafting an immaculate canvas, it turns out that an underrated—and oft-overlooked—product can make all the difference.

Lean in: The red carpet beauty hero is not an ethereal highlighter or jaw-snatching sculpting wand but a simple face mist—well, if you can consider a pricey potion infused with high-performing, skin-plumping actives "simple." Below, discover how these little luxuries have quietly taken over the red carpet beauty scene.

The Case for a Luxury Face Mist

Look, I totally get it. A face mist that costs upward of $95 may sound a bit extra. Why drop a pretty penny for a product that provides no more than three seconds of bliss? However, I'd argue that a mist provides more than a spa-grade experience, especially if you're prepping for an important event. Supplying your skin with a preliminary layer of hydration before any other actives can help those treatments do their jobs (plumping, lifting, firming) more efficiently. It's no wonder celebrities flock to facialists like Iván Pol, Gavin McLeod-Valentine (aka Lord Gavin), and Adeela Crown, who consider misting an essential step for their pre–red carpet treatments.

"This luxurious product is a must-have during my facials, serving as the initial step to awaken the skin’s appetite," says Pol of his Amuse Bouche mist. "It sets and primes the natural palette, balancing pH levels with harmonious, natural dewiness. McLeod-Valentine (who treated Emily Blunt, Lily Gladstone, and the iconic Naomi Campbell for the Met Gala) and Crown similarly rely on mists—Augustinus Bader's The Face Mist and La Prairie's The Mist, respectively—to prep the skin for subsequent serums and treatments. "Your skin is like a sponge. Dampening the surface of your face and neck can help the product absorb more effectively because when your skin is slightly wet, it's more permeable," Crown explains. The mists allow for deeper penetration of those hydrating, plumping serums, which then create a healthy canvas for immaculate makeup application down the line. It's a fine balance, and one could argue it all starts with a humble spray.

Mists are also instant skin-refreshers, so aestheticians will typically use them as a finishing step, too. "They are also something we use to resuscitate makeup and to give us a bit more verve and glow," says McLeod-Valentine. In fact, many celebrity facialists recommend their clients spritz just before stepping in front of the swarm of shuttering cameras. (A secret insider tip!) "Forget hair spray—skin mist is now usually the final step before a star takes to the red carpet," Crown declares. "When the light hits the hydrated skin, it looks lit from within."

What may have begun as a celebrity secret weapon is quickly becoming a popular product expansion for high-end beauty brands. Nordstrom beauty director Autumne West has certainly noticed an uptick in luxury facial mists on the market. (For reference, La Prairie's mist launched on July 1, while Amuse Bouche and Augustinus Bader's The Face Mist dropped in April.) "As we see an emphasis on glowing, healthy skin, both skincare and makeup enthusiasts are turning to mists for their versatility and multiuse purpose," she tells me. And luxury brands are taking note.

Yes, they're pricey compared to the average facial spray, but they're often not as spendy as, say, a serum or face cream from the brand, despite oftentimes having overlapping ingredient profiles. "A lot of luxury mists include similar key ingredients to core skincare products, which can spark curiosity for customers to discover a new step to their otherwise simple routine," notes West. With this in mind, I suspect face mists will become the new gateway product for luxury brands, a product with a more digestible price point for new consumers to enter a brand's ecosystem.

Take Augustinus Bader's The Face Mist, for example: It features the brand's proprietary TFC8 complex to regenerate and protect the skin, and it's tagged at $95. (The brand's cult-favorite Rich Cream, on the other hand, costs $300.) "It is an amazing way to try the brand and its technology and results in an accessible way," says McLeod-Valentine. "It can easily be integrated into your existing routine and will maximize your current roster of products."

Sure, you could always buy a less pricey mist—there's no shortage of options to choose from, and I adore more than a few! But there's something so special about a luxury version of an everyday refresher, similar to how you might have a collection of drugstore lip balms yet invest in a gorgeous Prada version. There is space for both hydrators.

"True luxury, in my opinion, is more than just opulence. It’s a flawless balance of performance and refinement," adds Crown, and I couldn't agree more. Upgrading your everyday face mist likely won't cause any drastic changes to your complexion, but I'd be lying if I said a gentle cloud of peony-scented spray à la Amouse Bouche doesn't make me feel like a million bucks. Little luxuries indeed.

Fashion never stops. Roughly five weeks after staging a spectacular Cruise 23 show in San Diego, Louis Vuitton is now showcasing its S/S 23 men's collection in Paris. Naturally, the brand's latest event attracted plenty of A-listers, including Naomi Campbell, J Balvin, Justin Timberlake, Jessica Biel, Kendrick Lamar, and more. Campbell's outfit, in particular, spoke to me because it has absolutely everything I'm looking for in a vacation outfit: extreme comfort and a cheery tropical theme. What more could you ask for? 

A press release offered some insight into the creation of the men's line, which used to be helmed by Virgil Abloh before his untimely passing. "The Spring-Summer 2023 men's collection was conceived and created by the Louis Vuitton Studio Prêt-à-Porter Homme: an ever-evolving ecosystem of creative minds, who welcomed Virgil Abloh to the maison in 2018 and expanded during his eight seasons of artistic direction," the brand explained. "A living testament to his talent for bringing people together, they populate a creative playground more than a century in the making."

It’s no secret that some trends don’t age well. There are entire decades that implore us to ask, What were you thinking wearing that? I can’t think of a period other than the early 2000s that gets tons of flack and is simultaneously considered on-trend. Even if we wanted to forget it, Y2K trends—like velour tracksuits, rhinestone swimsuits, and even the beloved brands of the era—have all reemerged into the fashion zeitgeist, making them impossible to ignore. But amid the chaos of grappling with low-rise denim’s comeback, we’ve forgotten that not all of the ’00s trends were cringe-worthy. In fact, some distill the purest form of nostalgia for the era, including one trend that’s managed to fly under the radar: butterfly clothing. 

Since last summer, I’ve noticed that butterflies have been spotted everywhere. From recent red carpet events to ready-to-wear presentations to Instagram, butterflies have reemerged from their cocoons in a new form. Ahead, I’m taking a deep dive into the archives of the early aughts, including the receipts from recent runways and red carpets to show that butterflies are back and bigger than ever.

Not to age myself, but I definitely was one of those children that exclusively wore butterfly clothing. Luckily, I was in the company of the era’s great divas. You can’t look back into the early ’00s without noticing that monarchs were the moment. Of course, there were the women who carried this trend (hello, Mariah Carey), but iterations of butterflies were found everywhere, from luxury pieces like the S/S 1999 Atelier Versace chain-mail butterfly dress (worn both by Naomi Campbell and Christina Aguilera) to everyday clothing for the masses. However, to restrict this jaunt down memory lane to just a few bedazzled patches would be like clipping this trend’s wings. The vibrantly colored critters took over our television screens and beauty routines, too. Who can forget when fictional characters like Jenna Rink of 13 Going on 30 donned a statement-making encrusted butterfly necklace or when Carrie Bradshaw wore an oversize butterfly Kenneth Jay Lane piece on the "Frenemies” episode of Sex and the City?

Of course, we must put respect on butterfly hair clips. Everyone from fictional characters like Lizzie McGuire to larger-than-life celebrities like Tyra Banks and Gwen Stafani styled their hair with butterfly hair clips. And if jewelry, dresses, and hair accessories don’t cement that this trend was flying high, how about temporary butterfly tattoos worn by actresses like Salma Hayek to the MTV Awards? Basically, butterflies took over everything as quickly as the fluttering of wings. Whether or not you were a fan, it was a defining moment in time.

All trends that wield influence over high fashion, television, and our beauty routines eventually taper out. But no trend is genuinely over; it can undergo a metamorphosis again. This is the case for butterfly clothing. This slow reemergence can be attributed to a mix of nostalgia, Google searches, runway collections, and celebrities championing the trend. One of the earlier iterations of the reemergence of the butterfly in fashion was Zendaya's incredible floor-length monarch-inspired Moschino gown that she wore to the 2017 premiere of The Greatest Showman. Then, Billy Porter attended the 2020 Critics' Choice Awards covered in temporary butterfly tattoos. Of course, they were trendsetters. It wasn’t until March 2021 that the monarch truly took flight with the fashion set. From Dua Lipa’s incredible custom Versace butterfly gown worn at the Grammy Awards to Bella Hadid wearing Blumarine’s F/W 21 collection to Paris Fashion Week, it’s clear that these winged beings have reentered the chat. But it’s not just red carpet looks. Everyone from Halle Berry to Tinashe has been spotted wearing butterfly belts, shoes, hair clips, and belly chains. Butterfly clothing is fluttering back in a way we couldn’t have imagined.

The biggest case for butterflies making their comeback is their resurgence on the runways. The insect motif has appeared in some of our favorite designers’ most recent ready-to-wear collections (including Kim Shui and Jil Sander). However, don’t be fooled—this is not the same butterfly trend of the past. The rebirth of this trend finds its distinction from the early aughts version as a more refined, grown-up butterfly. Yes, kitschy butterfly baby tees and butterfly pendant necklaces still abound, but designers have reimagined this insect for the new age into a more polished form (think bustiers, blazers, and mini bags adorned with butterflies). Over are the days of low-rise jeans bedazzled with butterflies or full head-to-toe butterfly looks. Instead, they’ve found a new form in our everyday essentials. Only time will tell if butterfly clothing will be a fleeting trend, but either way, we can look back at the moment with a fondness similar to our love for the ’00s—hopefully with less regret.

Naomi Campbell has some big news to share. She took to Instagram to announce the arrival of her first child, a daughter. The announcement is a birthday present of the sweetest kind, as Campbell is turning 51 in just four days.

As a child of the '90s, I'll admit that there are many trends of that decade that I'd rather leave behind (pencil-thin eyebrows and towering Spice Girls–esque platform sneakers among them). And while I did dabble in some of the era's more questionable looks—including butterfly clips and plastic chokers—I'm convinced the decade is far chicer than we give it credit for.

You only have to look as far as celebrity throwbacks featuring Gwyneth Paltrow, Naomi Campbell or Kate Moss to see that the most standout looks from the '90s were often the simplest. From knit dresses to chic silk slips, the outfits that can be categorised as easy and effortless are also the most prominent looks that have stood the test of time.

1. The Slip Dress

Style Notes: Let's start as we mean to go on, with one of the decades biggest style influences–Gwyneth Paltrow. The actress was a '90s It girl, as evidenced by her penchant for sleek, minimalist looks like the silk maxi dress above. This awards look is a classic silhouette, only made better by the must-have accessory (not Brad Pitt), silver jewellery.

There's something particularly alluring about timeless fashion. I'm always in awe of the kind of outfits you can look at and not necessarily pinpoint what year, decade, or era they're from. Made from a combination of classic items—be it straight-leg jeans, button-down shirts, chunky knitwear, or open-toe shoes—these looks rely on the forever-favourite wardrobe heroes we wear again and again, season after season. 

When it comes to celebrity style, I love stumbling across an image of someone who has been famous for years (think Jennifer Aniston or Naomi Campbell) and playing a silent, internal guessing game about when the photo was taken. For those celebrities who subscribe to a timeless aesthetic, this game can be more difficult than you'd think. But that's exactly what makes their style great.

Below, I've tracked down seven celebrity photos from the '90s and early noughties which easily look as if they could contain outfits from 2021 (face masks aside, of course). Style Notes: My obsession with Friends is well documented on this website. Though, it can predominantly be blamed on an underlying love for Jennifer Aniston's style. The woman is an icon of timeless style, so much so that it'd be difficult to even pinpoint when this image was taken. A late-'90s look that still feels relevant today? Aniston's outfit archive contains oh so many.

Style Notes: I wouldn't blame you if you thought Gabrielle Union's white shirt in this look was by uber-cool French designer Jacquemus. Given this look is from 2001, it would be impossible, though it is just as stylish as one of his designs. A crisp button-down and jeans is a combo celebs have been wearing for years, and we don't anticipate it stopping any time soon.

Style Notes: Young Gwyneth Paltrow wore a lot of outfits I would happily re-create, especially this one composed of a leather blazer and straight-leg jeans. It's simple, it's effortless, and, most importantly, it's classic. Bonus point for Brad Pitt, whose outfit is equally as timeless.

Style Notes: It's no surprise that this outfit looks as if it could have been styled today given that is comprised of undeniably classic items. A timeless cardigan, white tank top and black trousers? It's a formula chic women wear time and time again.

London Fashion Week, much like last season, isn't quite how it was this time last year. And we honestly don't know when that will change. It's a great privilege to run around to show after show, looking at beautiful garments and spotting A-listers on the front row (and maybe even sitting next to one), and I really, really miss it. Twice a year, it's exactly like being back at school—you see friends you haven't seen in a while, you get to gossip, catch up and have a giggle. Yes, there are some ridiculous sights to see too, I won't deny that, but it's a moment in the calendar when we all get the chance to really celebrate the creativity of the fashion industry. We can take a step back and see how designers are interpreting our world right now and what they're looking at in the future. It is art, even if that art can appear silly to some.

The thing is fashion can really take your breath away. A "simple" runway can suddenly alter how everyone wants to dress. There are various moments that have occurred during the fashion month calendar that have stopped us in our tracks. Most recently, an industry friend of mine found Richard Quinn's September 2019 show so emotional she shed a few tears. There are also moments that came way before I was even a fashion journalist that have remained iconic—Naomi Campbell falling over at Vivienne Westwood to Phoebe Philo's first-ever Céline show. Naomi Campbell's YouTube channel is an amazing peek into the legendary supermodel's life. Videos include makeup tutorials, how she shops at Whole Foods, her airport routine, her workouts, and her charity work. One post that really got our attention was a video she posted that's titled "My Personal Vitamin & Supplement Routine." She details how she makes her morning smoothie and all the vitamins and supplements she takes. If you thought your regimen was strict, Naomi's got you beat. In all, she has close to 30 ingredients, pills, and tinctures in her wellness stash.

It's no secret that Campbell is very serious about her health, and she's been especially vigilant since the COVID-19 pandemic. In the YouTube video, she stressed how crucial it is for her to have a strong immune system, especially after the pandemic. "That's what I’m going to take on a regular basis," she said. "Because most important, it's to build up the immune as I said before. So let's take our immunes up to the next level, protect our immunes, nurture our immunes, take care of ourselves."

The 49-year-old supermodel is practically ageless, so we don't mind learning what she does for her well-being each day, which we've outlined below. But keep in mind that it's important to consult a medical professional before you add anything new to your supplement or vitamin routine. Campbell even has a disclaimer at the end of the video to remind viewers of it, too.

I love it when a story idea suddenly comes to me while I'm working on another article. This time around, I was finishing my story about Blue Crush bikini trends that are still relevant in 2020—yes, that's really part of my job—and I wanted to include swimsuits similar to Kate Bosworth's boy shorts in the movie.
