It's funny to think that one of 2022's hottest nail trends was started completely by accident. All it took was Hailey Bieber and her trusty nail artist Zola Ganzorigt. "Glazed donut nails" were an on-a-whim idea Ganzorigt had that would complement Bieber's 2022 Met Gala dress. A French pedicure is the same thing as a French manicure—just, well, on the toes. It's a simple, minimalist design that traditionally involves painting a crisp white or off-white line across the top of each nail, although some French pedicures incorporate other colors like pink and butter yellow. When doing a French pedicure at home, the trick is to focus on the nail and cuticle prep, ensuring you have a clean, fresh, and precise base to work with.

How to Do a French Pedicure

Step 1: Foot & Cuticle Prep

Precise nail and cuticle prep is *everything* when attempting a DIY French pedicure. Depending on personal preference, time, and comfort level, nail artists often recommend soaking your feet for five to 10 minutes, exfoliating with a foot scrub, and then applying a cuticle remover to the base of the toes before pushing the cuticles back with a tool. Sally Hansen's Instant Cuticle Remover ($6) is my go-to. It works in 30 seconds and makes my nail beds look so smooth and fresh. Did I mention it comes highly recommended from an IG-famous dermatologist?

Step 2: The Base Color

Once the feet and cuticles are prepped, it's time to paint. Start with a base color. Traditionally, sheer, neutral nail colors have been used for this, but don't be afraid to mix a few shades to find your perfect one. This is a tip I learned from Hailey Bieber's nail artist, Zola Ganzorigt, who never uses just one shade. She mixes them to create a bespoke shade that complements each client's skin tone. A few of her go-to colors are below. You can also veer away from standard neutrals and choose a jelly one. Sheer pink, butter yellow, and lilac are flooding my FYP.

Step 3: The French Pedi

There are a couple of different ways you can create a professional-looking French pedicure at home. First, you can use a tapered nail brush to manually paint it across the top of the nail. This method works if you have a steady hand. Personally, though, I like using a stencil to get the perfect half-moon shape. I like Orly's Half Moon Guides ($7), which are wide enough to fit my toes just as well as they fit my fingers.

Call me old-fashioned, but I love a timeless, neutral nail trend. I know, I know, maximalist nail art is having a moment, and whilst I can fully appreciate how incredible it looks, nothing makes me feel more polished than a milky nail polish or white French tip. That being said, I'm always open to trying something new (as long as it fits my neutral aesthetic, of course), and when I spotted butter yellow nails on my Instagram feed, it was love at first sight.

That said, she says you could add a chrome powder or subtly shimmery topcoat over it to make it look even more on-trend. "I'm seeing a lot of shimmer accents and topcoats this summer! And why not? The way they reflect the sun is so stunning," she adds.

In terms of persimmon polishes, she suggests selecting a formula with a shiny, creamy finish. "My pick is Candy by The GelBottle. That one skews more red than orange. After gently pushing back the cuticles and lightly exfoliating any dry skin around the nail, I softly buff the nail plate, cleanse with acetone and then begin the gel application.

My go-to application is Glass Base (£20), followed by Strawberry Blush Glass Gel (£25) and then Glass Top (£20). For the ultimate glossy finish, I always recommend pairing it with a high-shine base coat and top coat; that extra shine is what gives the manicure its signature glass-like finish. Once everything is cured, I perfect the shape with a final file.

Personally, I love applying it using an apex technique, which creates a beautifully smooth, curved surface that catches the light from every angle. This is where the manicure really comes to life, as the nails almost look like little glass jewels.

One of the things I love most about Strawberry Blush is how versatile it is. With just one coat, you get a flush of pink that enhances the nail's natural tone. As you build additional layers, the colour becomes more vibrant, allowing you to completely customise the effect.

To really nail this look at home, it's all about the prep. "Making sure that cuticles are pushed back and removed, and wiping away any dust or debris once you've buffed the nail is super important," explains Tladi. "That way any polish you apply on the nail looks clean and expensive."

As much as I love neutral nails, I have a soft spot for certain trends that peak during summer. One maximalist trend that's been constantly showing up in my algorithm is none other than ombré nails. Initially, I thought this trend might not be for me, but after seeing how many different color combinations can be used to make them match my personal style, I was sold.

If you don't already know, ombré nails (sometimes confused with aura nails) are when two or more colors are placed onto the nail with a sponge and then diffused to create a seamless blend from one color to the other. What Is a Butter French Pedi?

I know, I know, it's pretty self-explanatory: Simply select a butter-yellow polish for your next French pedicure, and there you have it—a delicious "butter French." Now, this all being said, I do understand the chatter that butter yellow is a tad basic. I'd rather call it classic, but if you're tired of simple stick-of-butter nails, rest assured that you can update the butter French pedi for summer 2026 looks. Tip number one: Stick to a "baby" line. While French pedicures are delightfully retro, a thin stripe keeps the overall look from feeling too Y2K, when a chunky French tip was all the rage. There's also something about a micro French that feels so elegant and sophisticated, especially when you toss a butter-yellow polish into the mix. Celebrity pedicurist Milly Mason's butter pedi (pictured above) is the perfect example—color-coordinating sandals optional but highly recommended.

"Biotin is essential for normal hair growth, but true biotin deficiency is rare. In deficient people, supplementing with biotin can improve hair loss. However, in people with normal biotin levels, high-quality studies have not consistently shown that biotin supplements increase hair growth, thickness, or reduce shedding." Before you abandon the thought of using biotin, though, you should know that it has another, perhaps less popular benefit: growing and strengthening brittle nails. That's according to two top dermatologists who say it might be your fix for short, bendy, breaking nails. Keep scrolling to learn everything you need to know.

What Is Biotin?

Biotin, or vitamin B7, is a water-soluble vitamin that's produced naturally in the body and found in many foods, including meat, eggs, salmon, sweet potatoes, lentils, and nuts. It plays an important role in converting food to energy and helps enzymes break down carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. It's also important in cell signaling.

Biotin & Nail Health

According to dermatologist Dara Spearman, MD, FAAD, biotin can really make a difference in the state of the nails, especially if they're damaged from one too many gel manicures. "Biotin can benefit the nails by boosting the production of keratin, which is the main protein that can be found in finger and toenails," she says. "Biotin can not only help with the growth but also the healthiness of your nails."

Shah agrees. Although, she says proof in the form of scientific studies is still scarce. "The evidence for nails is better than for hair. Although, it's still limited. Several small studies suggest that biotin may improve brittle nails by increasing nail thickness. Biotin may help by supporting keratin, the primary structural protein that makes up nails. Additionally, biotin functions as a cofactor for enzymes involved in producing fatty acids and other molecules needed by rapidly growing tissues like nails. The exact mechanism isn't fully understood, but improved keratin organization and nail plate integrity are the leading theories."

Yep, the experts agree that biotin really can improve the strength and health of the nails. However, Shah says, "It's important to note that biotin doesn't necessarily make nails grow faster. Instead, stronger nails break less, so they can reach longer lengths."

How Often to Take Biotin for Nail Health

"The dose most often used in studies is 2.5 milligrams (2500 mcg) daily, which is substantially higher than the recommended daily intake for adults (30 mcg/day), but it's the dose evaluated in most nail studies," Shah says. "Higher doses (such as 5000 to 10,000 mcg) are commonly sold but haven't shown additional nail benefits."

Spearman agrees, saying the recommended dose is 2.5 milligrams, and that's what she suggests to anyone who's wanting to take it for nail-health purposes. "This is a healthy amount to rebuild the strength of finger and toe nails," she says.

As for how often to take biotin, both experts say once a day is enough. "Because fingernails grow slowly, results take time to appear," Shah says. "Most studies found improvements after two to three months for early changes and three to six months for more noticeable improvement. If there has been no benefit after about six months, it's reasonable to reconsider whether it's helping."

Downsides & Drawbacks

The experts say biotin is generally considered safe because it's water-soluble and serious side effects are uncommon. "However, there are some important drawbacks," Shah says. "The biggest concern is laboratory test interference. High-dose biotin can interfere with many blood tests, including tests for thyroid disease, myocardial infarction, certain hormone tests, some vitamin and other laboratory assays. This can lead to falsely high or falsely low results depending on the test, which has occasionally contributed to missed or delayed diagnoses."

That's why it's critical to tell your healthcare providers you're taking biotin supplements before having any blood work done. "Many clinicians recommend stopping biotin for at least 48 to 72 hours before laboratory testing. Though some specialized tests may require a longer washout period depending on the dose and the assay," Shah says. "Other reported potential adverse effects include mild stomach upset or acne-like breakouts. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should discuss high-dose supplements with their clinician, even though biotin requirements are slightly higher during pregnancy."

Spearman adds that excessive biotin intake can cause side effects such as skin discomfort, trouble with sleep, nausea, and, interestingly, excessive doses can contribute to hair loss." The best way to avoid these side effects is by sticking to the recommended daily dosage.

5 More Ways to Strengthen Nails

The experts say biotin isn't the only way to strengthen the nails and keep them healthy. You should also:

• Moisturize your nails (hand creams and cuticle oils can help)
• Use a nail strengthener as needed
• Avoid harsh chemicals and salon processes
• Avoid repeated wet-dry cycling ("Wet-dry cycles weaken nails," Shah says. "Wearing gloves for dishwashing or cleaning can help.")
• Eat protein ("Since nails are made primarily of keratin, inadequate protein intake can contribute to weak nails," Shah says.)

I'm currently in the process of rotating my boots to the back of my closet and my sneakers and flip-flops to the front. Luckily, I already have my summer pedi lineup sorted, thanks to three top nail artists who clued me into the chicest shades for summer 2026. Even though she admits that it's one of the most requested pedicure shades every summer, it's especially relevant and on-trend this year. "It's timeless, confident, and feminine, making it a favorite choice year after year." Think of a sun-ripened heirloom tomato, bursting from the vine. The orange-red color is ultra-flattering and pops against sun-kissed skin.

Pistachio

Pistachio perfumes are everywhere right now (searches are up over 850%). As with most beauty trends, pistachio isn't sticking to a single category. Pistachio-tinged nail polish is also on the rise, and I've personally spotted it on some stylish toes on the streets of NYC. The creamy green hue is unexpected and original. It's eye-catching, but in a way that whispers rather than shouts. Take this as an official PSA to match your pedicure to your pistachio-milk latte this summer.

Hot Pink

Millennials will probably associate hot pink pedicures with the early 2000s. Britney! Christina! NSYNC! The cool-again color has a Y2K appeal. It suits the maximalist aesthetic of cool-girl celebs like Zara Larsson and Addison Rae, which is why I'm planning on wearing it while streaming both of their latest albums. Slynko says it's gaining traction in summer 2026 because it exudes energy and personality. "It is playful, bold, and looks especially beautiful on sun-kissed skin," she says.

Svitlana Motyl is an International Nail Artist, Educator, Championship Judge, Author of Proprietary Nail Techniques, and the Co-Founder of Art Me Nails Studio. She agrees that hot pink will be one of the most stylish pedicure shades of the summer. "The bright pink hue instantly adds a fun, cheerful touch and complements everything from beachwear to evening outfits. It’s a color that feels both youthful and elegant, making it a go-to shade for the season."

Berry Jelly

The experts say it's time to take your favorite fruit—whether that's raspberry, blackberry, or strawberry—and translate it into your summer pedicure. To nail the trend (pun intended), you need two things. First, you need the right jammy and syrupy shade. Choose whichever color you prefer, whether it leans more pink, red, or purple. Secondly, you need a translucent nail polish to achieve a see-through, jelly effect. Celebrity Nail Artist Elle says if it's done right, it will mimic your favorite pair of trendy jelly sandals.

Seashell

Elle says shell-inspired nails are another stylish aesthetic for summer 2026. This pedicure mimics the shiny, opalescent finish of the inside of a seashell. It's elevated, beachy, ethereal, and gives mermaid vibes in the best way. The key is to use a soft, glazed nail polish with an off-white finish. The most relevant ones are milky and pearly and shift blue, green, gold, or champagne in the sun.

Cobalt Blue

I hate to play favorites, but cobalt blue is one of my favorite summer pedicure shades. It looks so stunning against sun-kissed skin—even better when it's seen set against golden sand or flashing through aquamarine pool water. I was already planning on wearing it all season long, but now that I have expert validation, I'm basically hoarding bottles of blue nail polish.

"A crisp white pedicure remains one of the chicest choices for summer 2026," Motyl says. "It complements every skin tone, beautifully highlights the shape of the nails, and creates a clean, polished look. [It's] especially popular during vacation season because it looks stunning against sun-kissed skin and pairs effortlessly with summer sandals."

Sandy Beige

A sandy beige pedicure is chic for multiple reasons. 1) It's a match-anything option that will see you through any dress code, event, or situation. 2) It's flattering on a wide range of skin tones. 3) It's a sophisticated, "quiet luxury" color for people who want to embrace a summery aesthetic without wearing bold hues. Wear it with a glossy top coat or opt for a glazed finish for even more sun-kissed shine.

French Pedicure

This is admittedly more of a design than a color, but French Pedicures are downright dominating the trend cycle this season. The trend has already started to take over IG and TikTok. It's crisp, classy, and slightly nostalgic, an obvious choice for anyone who wants their pedicure to whisper wealth. "The French Pedicure continues to be incredibly popular because of its clean, polished, and versatile appearance," Slynko says. "It pairs effortlessly with any outfit or footwear, making it a go-to choice for vacations, weddings, and everyday wear."

As we officially step into sandal season, there's no better time to switch up your go-to pedicure (or focus on foot care, for that matter!). While classic neutrals like milky white, sheer pink, and rich brown transcend seasons, beauty enthusiasts—including yours truly—tend to experiment with playful shades and designs once warmer weather rolls around. The same goes for manicures, but it's especially true for the toes; there's just something about summer that inspires people to forgo the safe route. Perhaps we can thank the thrill of an upcoming getaway?

According to Jarjour, we're going to see a ton of French pedicures this summer. Be it a micro stripe or chrome finish (looking at you, Kylie!), a French tip is such a chic way to switch up a clean, neutral pedicure. That said, "[it's not] too bold for someone who doesn’t like changing their color," Jarjour notes. Minimalists, this is a pedicure trend you can firmly stand behind.

Baby Blues

"I think softer pastel blues are underrated for summer pedicures," shares Choi. Vibrant shades like cobalt and cerulean typically skyrocket in popularity during warmer months, but airy blues look just as cool paired with summer sandals. In fact, Choi says they appear even more modern and fresh for 2026. "I also think toned-down cool blues like JinSoon Sea Clay feel unexpected for summer but very chic," she adds.

For a more fashion-forward finish, don't be afraid to add a hint of icy shimmer with Essie's Bikini so Teeny—Jarjour's favorite baby blue. "It goes great with a dip in the water!" she shares.
