I can't help but feel cooler with a rich coat of espresso, navy, or olive on my nails. A deeper shade also elevates my outfits to the nth degree—even more so if I opt for a chic, artful design—so I've been collecting inspo for months in preparation for the first kiss of brisk fall air. It may be 81°F as I type this sentence, but hey, it's officially September, baby!

Muted Metallics

According to celebrity manicurist Stephanie Stone, understated metallic shades (think soft pewter, rose gold, brown chrome, etc.) will dominate the fall 2026 season. "We still have our deep hues in rotation, but the fresh, glitzy formulas help keep the look both modern and timeless," she shares. To hop on the trend, either opt for a burnished polish (like Essie's Gel Couture Liquid Diamonds collection) or simply add a chrome topper to any rich shade you please. I'm personally partial to this smoky brown moment above from celebrity manicurist Iram Shelton, who simply used OPI's Hot Toddy Naughty

Elevated Earth Tones

As the leaves turn, it only feels natural to coat your tips in shades of gold, amber, and brown. Why not lean into the fall classics? "We have our fall favorites for a reason," Stone says. "They help us get into the spirit of the seasonal change." Still, if you're hoping to spice things up a bit, feel free to alternate colors like the photo above. An ombré moment never fails to turn heads.

Almost-Black Blues

"I loved seeing all of the dark plums and reds trickle in a little earlier this year during high summer," shares celebrity manicurist Holly Falcone, co-founder of Celisse Nails. I concur—there's just something so cool about an off-season, "Summerween" manicure. (Hailey Bieber and Charli XCX would also agree.) "I think that dark trend will stay but evolve into almost-black blues, browns, and, of course, black," Falcone continues. For those with an aversion to jet-black manicures (they're polarizing, I get it), I suggest going the deep, midnight navy route.

Fantasy Pearl

When it comes to more underrated fall shades, Falcone is quick to call out "fantasy pearls." You might associate them more with summer months—as these shades do have a seashell-like iridescence—but more neutral players like white and pink look chic year-round. "Bunny as one coat is a great intro to a pearly finish," Falcone offers. That said, dreamy blues and purples also totally earn their place in a fall manicure lineup.

Almost-There French

When it comes to trending designs, "I love an almost-there, soft French," Falcone shares. Also called a "cloudy" French, this look features a hazy veil over a classic French manicure—like a sheer garment for your nails. To nail that foggy effect, paint your French tips as usual, then once everything dries, add another light coat of your base polish to create a translucent layer. So easy, so chic.

Micro Details

Mini nail art is also a smart way to switch things up without taking attention away from your base color. "Tiny stars and dots forever," Falcone says of her favorite fall designs, though I'd also add micro hearts to that list—especially in an earthy green over a clean, sheer base.

Just Buffed

Clean, naked nails are forever on-trend, so take this as a sign to focus on maintenance. "I truly think the ‘underrated’ nail product right now is cuticle oil—not a color," Stone declares. "When fall rolls around and the weather starts changing, we often notice our skin drier and our nails more brittle. It’s completely normal and a great time to start a year-round cuticle care routine if you haven’t already." Grab a roll-on or brush-on formula and apply it three times per day (like breakfast, lunch, and dinner for your nails, a manicurist once told me!). If you can't fathom forgoing polish entirely, layer on a strengthening base coat for a noticeable shine. "Our new base coat, The Set Up, is a quick way to achieve that satin, just-buffed look," shares Falcone.

Now and again, a nail trend comes along that is so good, it convinces me to ditch my milky manicure altogether. I'm a neutral nail gal through and through, but occasionally I will switch things up, especially at the start of a new season. So, when I saw the "milky matcha" manicure on Instagram, I was instantly sold.

The creamy green hue immediately caught my attention, as it looked soft and subtle whilst still incorporating one of this season's biggest shades. Whilst January marks the official start of the year, September is a new beginning in itself. Even as an adult, I still get that seasonal itch to head to a WH Smith for a fresh set of stationery and a pencil case. It marks the start of a new season, where many of us enjoy that scholastic nostalgia whilst simultaneously embracing new beauty trends, whether a new haircut or making some autumnal switches in our makeup bags. In beauty, September carries the same energy as a new academic term.

For many, school photo day immortalised the best (but mostly the worst) in our beauty discoveries at school. At 13, I vividly remember curling just the front sections of my hair with my GHD straighteners, applying four coats of two different Rimmel and Maybelline mascaras and overplucking my left eyebrow with tweezers stolen from my mum's makeup bag the morning of photo day. By the time I sat down in front of the mottled blue photo screen, the curls had dropped despite copious amounts of hairspray, and my wonky brow looked extra surprised as the photographer chirped, "Say cheese!"

Nearly two decades on (and an eyebrow re-growth journey later), I've thankfully learned most of my beauty lessons. That being said, I often yearn for that sense of experimentation during school years, and the novelty of discovering new beauty products or trying a hairstyle for the first time. And with the arrival of autumn, in my opinion, there is no better time to try something new. There are both benefits and fun to be had from a seasonal hair switch-up, or shaking up the uniform of our makeup bags. So, notepads at the ready; ahead, we're championing back-to-school beauty, with three school-inspired looks alongside tips and tricks from the pros to inspire your beauty routine for autumn. Class is in session.

Lesson One: A Study in Blush

First on autumn's curriculum, blusher. Specifically, A fresh-faced glow you'd have from a morning darting around the hockey pitch, or locking eyes with your crush in the year above in the school corridor. Rather than placing blusher high up on the cheekbones, which we've become accustomed to over recent years, experiment with a lower placement. Not only does it feel modern and fresh, but the makeup trend gives youthful playfulness that brings a healthy glow to your complexion. "Going into autumn, I tend to veer from that dewy, bronzed summer skin, and lean into a more velvety satin skin finish," says makeup artist Faye Bluff. "I also tend to push the cheek placement back, gently sculpting and highlighting from the ears forward, rather than the sun-kissed bronzers through the centre of the face," she says.

The Homework: Swap your cream blush for a powder formula, which gives the complexion a more realistic, skin-like flush, and focus the placement lower on the cheeks. Here, Bluff used Rare Beauty Soft Pinch Matte Bouncy Blush in Thriving (£26) and Grateful (£26), and Violette_FR Plume Blush in Rose Fumé (£35). Both have a plush texture that lends a healthy glow to the apples of your cheeks.

Extra-Curricular Credit: Autumn hair needn't require a drastic hair colour transformation or haircut. Instead, it can be as simple as switching your parting or adding hair accessories to your style, says hairstylist Masayoshi Fujita. "I think the easiest thing is simply changing your hair parting. There’s no real risk, but it can completely change the feeling of your hairstyle," he says. "I’d also recommend trying some new hair accessories, like clips or scrunchies in a different colour. It’s a really simple way to refresh your look without making a big change." Miu Miu's pink hair clips are both chic and delightfully nostalgic.

Lesson Two: Giving Lip

Whilst we might have been subjected to uniform rules at school, autumn feels like an apt time to go forth with a distinctively rebellious spirit. If a bright, glossy lip would have landed you straight in detention at school, then take this as your sign to try it again. "I’m excited about makeup feeling a bit more individual again. I love seeing texture, colour and imperfection rather than everyone chasing the same hyper-perfect skin or identical lip shape," says Bluff.

For hair, we're following suit, embracing our natural texture in all its glory. "Hair is a form of personal expression. So rather than following one specific hair trend, I’m more interested in people expressing who they are—their background and their own character," says Fujita. "The fashion industry is embracing the rawness and natural character of hair rather than making it look too stiff or overly controlled," he says

The Homework: Go all out with bright, juicy persimmon or berry-toned lip gloss for a lacquered finish. Here, Bluff used Gucci Rouge à Lèvres Voile Lipstick in Agatha Orange (£40) and Gucci Gloss à Lèvres Plumping Lip Gloss in Sadie Coral (£36), with Kiko Milano Smart Fusion Lip Pencil in Lively Pink (£5) for a bright pop of colour.

Extra-Curricular Credit: Work with your natural hair texture, enlisting the help of curl creams or texturising mists to enhance its natural movement. "I wanted to keep both looks quite dry and natural, so I didn’t use much product," says Fujita. "I used a small amount of Hair by Sam McKnight Cool Girl Barely There Texture Mist (£29) through the ends of the hair, and a little Schwarzkopf Professional Osis+ Shine Spray (£17) on the top. I also used GHD Perfect Ending Hairspray (£15) at the beginning to control and hold the shape," he says.

Lesson Three: Colour Theory

The final lesson of the term? To play with colourful eyeshadow again. After seasons of bare lids and no mascara on the runways, for A/W 26, we're finally seeing colourful eyeshadows once again. From painterly daubs of apple green on the lids at Acne Studios to sparkling silver at Chanel, now's the time to try those rule-breaking hues. But you needn't have the skills of an MUA or an A* in GCSE art to get involved. "A wash of olive or taupe using your finger feels much more modern than a perfectly blended smoky eye," says Bluff. And if you're not ready for saturated shades, you can still tap into the mood. "For eyes, introduce more of those traditional autumnal tones, but keep the application quite undone," she says.

The Homework: Look to sheer washes of colour in vibrant tones, but don't stress about the application. One rule to break? "The idea that makeup has to be 'perfect'," says Bluff. "Perfection, symmetry and over-analysed colour theory is boring. Great makeup looks best when it sits alongside your features and becomes an extension of your character. Not an overworked, technically 'perfect' stamp on top," she says. Take your pick from Chanel's Les 9 Ombres in The New Singular (£130), or go for a solo shadow, such as Kiko Milano's Water Shadow in Violet (£12).

Extra-Curricular Credit: Once you've curated your autumn makeup bag, look to simple swaps to keep your makeup feeling modern. "Once you have your tried-and-trusted makeup 'uniform' down, you can start to play with changes in colour or texture. Burgundy mascara is my current favourite switch-out for a subtle autumnal pop," says Bluff.

With autumn fast approaching, I’m officially in planning mode. From the cashmere knits I’m going to invest in to the restaurants around the city I’m planning to try out, there’s plenty to look forward to. But the thing I’m most excited about? As a beauty editor, part of my job is to report on nail trends, but also pedicure trends that I see emerging on the most well-heeled of feet season to season. Over the summer, I observed the rise of the bare pedicure on tastemakers, quickly following in the footsteps of the bare nail trend we saw earlier in the summer. And for autumn, it seems the fashion set is still forgoing full pedicure colours on their toes, but with an upgrade on the totally bare look.

I spotted this "bare" French pedicure on Alexa Chung recently, and since then, I've been spotting more barely-there French pedicures everywhere on my feeds. Rather than a standard French pedicure with a crisp, defined line, these toes have a healthy flush of sheer pink polish, but paired with a sheer, soft French tip that looks entirely natural. It's like "no-makeup" makeup for your toes.

This natural-looking French pedicure doesn't just make your feet look immaculately manicured, but it's also a great transitional summer-to-autumn pedi trend to tide you over between the seasons, and it will go with any outfit or open-toed shoes in your wardrobe. One way to achieve the effect is to use a sheer, milky white polish on the tips of your toes—in place of a bright white—paired with an equally sheer pink nail polish to make your toes look glossy and healthy. Anyone else get to the end of summer and start to feel a little...frazzled? My skin is dull and dry, my blonde balayage is looking far too brassy thanks to weeks of swimming and sunbathing, and after months of back-to-back gel manicures, my natural nails are hanging on for dear life. Luckily, as a beauty editor, I have access to some of the best experts in the industry, and I've been asking everyone how I can reset my beauty routine and feel my best for the season ahead.

Below, I've compiled the ultimate guide to caring for your hair, skin and nails, alongside lots of expert tips, tricks and product recommendations. If, like me, you're not feeling 100% and want to step up your self-care this September, I highly suggest you keep on scrolling.

The Expert-Approved, Summer-to-Autumn Beauty Routine

Summer-to-Autumn Skincare

First up, let's talk skincare routines. Whilst my complexion was relatively happy during the warmer months, it suddenly seems to have taken a turn for the worse. Turns out, this is pretty common. "The seasons can definitely have an impact on our skin barrier," says Dr Jason Thomson, consultant dermatologist and head of medical at Skin + Me. "As we move from summer into autumn, the combination of colder weather outside and central heating indoors can mean the skin loses more moisture. It might start to feel tight, dry or flaky. People with sensitive or eczema-prone skin may also notice more irritation or flare-ups."

That said, Dr Thomson tells me that it doesn't mean we have to change our routine completely. "The foundations I recommend are simple: cleanse, treat, hydrate and protect." Whilst your treatment step (and SPF) may remain the same, for example, a retinol or vitamin C serum, it might be your cleanser and moisturiser that need adjusting at this time of year.

"I would swap out a lighter moisturiser for a richer one, and perhaps use a gentler cleanser over an exfoliating one (which may be better tolerated during summer months)," adds Dr Beibei, dermatologist and ambassador for skincare brand Simple.

In terms of ingredients, Dr Thomson recommends looking out for ceramides, hyaluronic acid, glycerin, niacinamide and centella asiatica. "They work in slightly different ways, but all can play a useful role in hydrating, soothing or supporting the skin barrier," he says. "Skin + Me’s Soothe + Smooth Rich Moisturiser is one option I like because it contains ceramides, hyaluronic acid, allantoin and shea butter. CeraVe Moisturising Cream is another good, widely available choice for dry skin. If someone is experiencing particularly dry or irritated patches, La Roche-Posay Cicaplast Baume B5+ can be useful as a more targeted layer."

Summer-to-Autumn Haircare

As mentioned, my hair is looking dry and frazzled, and my colour has certainly seen better days. "By the end of summer, our hair has usually experienced months of UV exposure, heat, humidity, chlorine and salt water. These can deplete moisture, roughen the cuticle and cause colour to fade, leaving the hair feeling dry, dull and more prone to breakage," explains Luke Pluckrose, lead stylist at TRESemmé Professional. "Autumn is the perfect time to reset your routine and replenish the moisture lost throughout summer." So, how do we do this?

"I recommend starting with a small trim to remove dry or split ends, then introducing more intensive hydration into your weekly routine," Pluckrose tells me. "Once a week, replace your usual conditioner with the TRESemmé Professional Hydra Molecular Moisture Treatment Mask. Apply it mainly through the mid-lengths and ends and leave it on for three minutes to give dry areas a more intensive moisture boost."

Aside from a hydrating hair mask, I'll also be reaching for a purple shampoo once a week to help banish brassiness, alongside a hair gloss to boost shine.

Summer-to-Autumn Nail Care

I went to my nail appointment the other week to get my gels taken off and give them a breather, and I was quite surprised by just how weak they were. Months of colourful nail art and gel manicures have definitely taken their toll, and I'm ready to give my nails a reset. "After travelling, spending time in the sea or pool, and being exposed to sun and heat, it’s often the skin around the nails that needs the most attention," says the expert team at one of my favourite luxury nail salons, So.Shell. "Autumn is a great time to focus on hydration — I recommend using cuticle oil daily, as well as a nourishing hand cream, especially one containing urea, to keep the skin soft and prevent dryness."

According to the expert team at So.Shell, consistency is key. "Apply cuticle oil at least once a day — ideally before bed — and massage it into the cuticles and the skin around the nails. Keep your hands moisturised and wear gloves when using cleaning products or when your hands are exposed to water for long periods."

Another reason your nails might not be feeling their best is if you've worn gel polish for longer than recommended. After a very busy summer, I'm definitely guilty of this one, but luckily, the experts have some great advice. "If a client has experienced significant damage, we may recommend taking a break from gel enhancements while the damaged part of the nail grows out. During this time, we focus on keeping the nails short, protected and well moisturised with cuticle oil and nourishing products."

Last but not least, let's talk body care. I feel like this step is often overlooked, but after a summer of UV exposure, salt water, chlorine and more, our skin is definitely in need of some TLC. "I treat the skin below my neck exactly as I would my face –particularly the décolletage, shoulders, arms, hands and legs, which have often accumulated significant UV exposure," says Dr Anna Persaud, This Works CEO and biochemist. "The neck and décolletage deserve particular attention because they accumulate UV exposure but are often neglected. Another thing you can add to your routine? Red light therapy. It's officially September, dear reader. While I love this month for so many reasons, I admire its stylish color palette the most. After a summer spent embracing saturated, sun-kissed shades, I always appreciate the annual return to softer, deeper, and more dramatic hues. I'm talking about rich shades of chocolate, olive, caramel, plum, and burgundy. In my opinion, these colors create the most stunning manicures and pedicures.

Before I commit to a single autumnal shade, though, I wanted to create my own September color palette—a collection of the chicest shades that I can consult, at a glance, to defeat my mani-pedi decision paralysis. IYKYK. In my quest for this personal September nail-color palette, I did as any good beauty editor would do: I reached out to experts, aka celebrity nail artists, and they delivered. Ahead, see the 11 expert-approved nail colors I'll be wearing all month long.

Deep Crimson

Maryna Slynko is an international judge, an award-winning nail educator, and the founder of Slynko Beauty Bloom Studio. She says red is the perfect summer-to-fall color. "[Red] has the brightness and energy we love in summer while also working beautifully with a more structured fall wardrobe," she says.

The first red nail color that will hit peak popularity in September? It's crimson, of course. It's a, shall I say, expected color, but it's anything but basic, and a deep, creamy version is undeniably elegant. "It still has the classic impact of red but with more depth and elegance," she continues. "That makes it particularly fitting for September because it sits right between the two seasons. It isn't quite as dark as a winter burgundy, but it already feels richer than a typical summer red. It pairs beautifully with cream, beige, camel, brown, gray, and black—the colors we naturally begin bringing back into our wardrobes in early fall."

Transitional Tomato

The next red nail color you need to know about is what celebrity nail artist Stephanie Stone calls transitional tomato. It's a warm, fiery orange-red that will help you kick off a new season with energy. "Red nails are the perfect September staple," Stone reiterates. "Since September can feel like a transitional month, the type of red you choose can bridge the gap from summer to fall."

"There's a warmth to it that reminds me of September sunshine and the first warm tones beginning to appear in the new season," she says. "Compared with a cooler classic red, a warm red feels slightly softer and pairs naturally with caramel, camel, chocolate, cream, and gold accents. That's why it works so well in September—it's still bright and expressive, but its warmth already connects beautifully with the fall palette."

Black Cherry

There's a third shade of red that'll be omnipresent this month, and it's rich, sultry, and tinged with black. Yep, according to celebrity nail artist Elle Gerstein, black cherry is officially *back.* "It's sexy and rich but not as harsh as going straight into black or brown," she says. "September is when everyone starts craving those deeper colors again."

Morning Mist

Over the summer, celebs like Hailey Bieber embraced bold turquoise and cobalt blue. This fall, Slynko says the blue-nail trend will continue, albeit in a softer, more subdued way. Meet morning mist. It's a beautiful, calming color that she predicts will be number one this month. "This soft blue keeps some of the freshness and lightness of summer, while its muted undertone makes it feel more refined and perfect for early fall," she says. "It's also a beautiful alternative to traditional beige and milky neutrals. It adds color without overwhelming the look and pairs especially well with denim, gray tones, and the first cozy knits of the season."

Sapphire Blue

Calling all Virgos or anyone who appreciates inky midnight blue as much as these practical, analytical, and organized folks. It's only natural that September's birthstone, sapphire, would make its way into the trend cycle. It's the deeper, richer way to wear blue this month. "Virgo season is here, making September the perfect time to try sapphire-inspired nails," Stone says. "Jewel-toned blues nod to the month's birthstone while also channeling the last oceanside days of the summer before we head further into fall." Rich, deep, and enchanting, sapphire blue feels especially fresh and relevant right now.

Viktoriia Voloshyna is an international judge, an award-winning nail educator, and the founder of Tory Pro Nails. She agrees that now is the time to embrace this nail color—like, right now. (Do with that information what you will.) "Sapphire and midnight blue will become a popular alternative to black," she says. "Indoors, the color can look very dark and dramatic, but in daylight, you can really see the blue come through. That depth makes the manicure look more interesting than a flat black. It's also a very versatile shade that looks beautiful on both short natural nails and longer structured shapes."

Dusty Plum

Are you like me, in that you love burgundy but aren't quite ready to commit to it yet? There's just something about it that feels more November than September, if you know what I mean. Apparently, Voloshyna agrees. She clued me into an unexpected alternative: dusty plum. "I think dusty plum will be a beautiful alternative to the burgundy shades we usually see every fall. It still feels rich and seasonal, but the muted purple undertone makes it look a little fresher and more modern. I especially like this color with an opaque, glossy finish because it looks sophisticated without feeling too dark for September," Voloshyna says.

Gerstein agrees, explaining that it's not pure purple; it has gray and brown undertones mixed into it. "It gives you that moody fall feeling without being too dark, and it works really well with the berry and wine colors we're already seeing," she says.

Earl Grey

Hold the pumpkin spice latte—at least when it comes to your September manicure. Stone says it's best to evoke another cozy beverage, Earl Grey tea, in your manicure. "The Earl Grey manicure is a subtle, London Fog–inspired alternative to the classic pumpkin spice. Inspired by crisp, overcast autumn afternoons, it's a moodier way to welcome the change in season." The understated shade is undeniably chic.

Oat Milk

Clearly, the beauty industry's obsession with food and beverage isn't going away anytime soon. So far, we have tomato-, plum-, black cherry–, and Earl Grey–inspired shades on this list. Now, it's time to add another one: oat milk. According to Gerstein, it's *the* chicest neutral for September, especially if you're a short-nail fan, like myself. "Instead of the really sheer, milky whites we've been wearing all summer, I think September neutrals get a little warmer," she says. "[Oat milk] is a cream-beige, almost a tiny bit yellow. It looks expensive and really clean, especially on shorter nails."

Suede Brown

Dark-chocolate and rich-espresso nail colors will come later. Right now, Voloshyna says it's time to embrace a light, velvety hue—suede brown. Similar to caramel and cognac, it has a golden undertone that feels fresh and sophisticated for September. "Warm, suede-inspired brown is another shade I expect to see a lot," she says. "It feels softer than a dark espresso brown, which makes it perfect for the beginning of fall. It also works so well with the colors people start wearing in September—denim, cream, camel, and gold. On the nails, a high-gloss finish makes this shade look especially rich and expensive."

Gerstein agrees, reiterating that it's the perfect summer-to-fall color. "Think warm caramel coffee with a little golden undertone. Brown has become such a neutral in nails, and this is the perfect September version because it still feels warm from summer but definitely fall," she says.

Dirty Martini

What's chicer than matching your manicure to your drink of choice? Gerstein says dirty martini nails are coming back in September 2026. "[It's] not a bright green; it's more muted and earthy, almost muddy," she says. I, for one, couldn't be more thrilled. As Gerstein puts it, it instantly signals "fall" while still feeling niche and unexpected.

Voloshyna agrees: "[It's] a great choice for someone who usually wears neutral colors but wants to try something a little different. The brown and muted yellow undertones make it feel warm and earthy, so it fits naturally into a fall color palette. It's interesting enough to stand out but still very wearable, especially as a simple solid-color manicure."

Sleek Silver

Last but certainly not least, Voloshyna makes a case for the silver-nail trend. Sleek, metallic, and eye-catching, it's the color for anyone who wants to kick off the season with a mani-pedi that's decidedly non-basic. "Silver is becoming more than just a chrome powder placed over another color," she says. "I think we'll see it worn as a full manicure, in magnetic velvet finishes, and as metallic accents over sheer or neutral bases. It feels modern and a little futuristic, but it's also surprisingly easy to wear."

It's September, which means we're in that awkward phase where the end of summer blends into the start of autumn. You're not quite ready to give up the bright, playful pedicure colours that have carried you through summer, but suddenly reaching for a neon pink or tropical coral doesn't feel quite right either. This September, I'm seeing a mix of glossy neutrals, muted brights and cooler finishes that feel surprisingly chic on toes. There are the usual autumnal suspects—think rich mocha and cherry red—but they're joined by icy chrome, muted lime and a cooler take on the classic French pedicure. And whilst peach might sound like a decidedly summery choice, a glossy, almost milky version feels much more understated for the start of autumn.

1. Glossy Peach

Peach might traditionally be associated with summer, but a glossy, pared-back version feels surprisingly appropriate for September. Rather than the bright, orange-toned peaches we've been seeing in warmer months, look for something soft, milky and slightly muted. The result is almost like a sheer wash of peach on the nails, with plenty of glossy shine. It's an easy choice if you want your pedicure to feel polished and neutral without committing to a deeper autumnal shade just yet.

2. Cherry Red

If there's one pedicure colour that can carry you seamlessly from summer into autumn, it's cherry red. Richer and slightly moodier than the bright tomato red that trended this summer, this is the shade to choose when you want something classic but with a little more impact. Think glossy, lacquer-like finishes rather than anything too dark or burgundy.

3. Icy Chrome

Chrome isn't going anywhere, but as we head towards autumn, I'm noticing icy, silver-toned versions rather than the warmer glazed finishes that dominated summer. On toes, the reflective finish gives even the simplest pedicure a little something extra, without being quite so eye-catching as a bright or bold colour. Keep the nails short and the shape neat to stop it veering too futuristic, and opt for a sheer, translucent chrome if you want something more understated.

4. Mocha Brown

September is when I start craving brown nail polish again, and mocha is probably the easiest way to ease yourself into the darker shades of autumn. It's understated enough to work with practically everything, but still gives your pedicure that richer, more autumnal feel. I'd pair it with a high-shine top coat to make the colour look glossy rather than flat.

5. Muted Lime

A muted lime might not be the most obvious September pedicure choice, but it's ideal for anyone heading abroad for some end-of-summer sun. The key is finding a version that's slightly dusty and toned down, rather than the zingy, almost-neon greens associated with summer. On toes, it adds a subtle hit of colour without looking overly bright, and feels particularly good with neutral clothing. If you're not quite ready for autumn's browns and reds, consider this your transitional shade.

And she isn't wrong. From gemstone-inspired jewel tones and deep, almost-black cherry to unexpected pops of sunny yellow and juicy peach, this month's standout shades are anything but one-note. “There’s definitely a move towards colours that feel really unique and intentional,” Bamber says. “Whether that’s a rich chocolate brown or a bold yellow, people are being a little more adventurous with colour whilst still keeping the overall manicure polished.” Below, I've rounded up the six September nail colours that I predict will be everywhere this month.

1. Jewel Tones

Think emerald green, sapphire blue, amethyst purple and rich ruby red—colours that feel saturated and expensive without automatically reading as festive. “Jewel tones are such a great way to add depth to your manicure,” says Bamber. “They feel bold, but because they're inspired by colours you'd naturally see in nature, they still look really sophisticated.” Keep things simple with one shade across every nail, or lean into the trend with a subtle magnetic or high-shine finish to really bring out the dimension.

2. Deep Cherry

A classic red manicure will never go out of style, but September is the ideal time to take things a little darker. Deep cherry sits somewhere between a true red and a rich burgundy, making it a particularly good option if you're not quite ready to go full wine or oxblood. “I love deep cherry because it can look almost black in some lights and then reveals that beautiful red tone,” says Bamber. The key is to keep the finish incredibly glossy, which gives the shade that almost lacquered, glass-like effect. Wear it on short, neat nails for something timeless, or on an almond shape for a slightly more dramatic look.

3. Sunny Yellow

Yellow may not be the first colour that comes to mind when you think of September, but I think it's the perfect nod to the end of summer. 5. Chocolate Brown

Chocolate brown has already proved itself to be one of 2026's biggest nail colours, and I don't see that changing any time soon—in fact, I think it's perfect for autumn. And, as an added bonus, it works beautifully across every nail length and shape. “Chocolate brown is such an easy colour to wear because it still acts almost like a neutral,” says Bamber. “It looks great on its own, but you can also use it for French tips or pair it with a sheer base.” My preferred way to wear it? Short, rounded nails and an ultra-glossy top coat.

6. Khaki Green

If bright summer greens feel a little too playful for September but you're not quite ready for a deep forest shade, khaki is the answer. Earthy, muted, and surprisingly versatile, it brings something a little different to the usual rotation of reds, browns and berry tones. “Khaki green is a really nice transitional shade because it has that earthy autumn feel without being too dark,” says Bamber. “It also looks amazing with a shimmer finish, which keeps it feeling modern.”

Through spring and summer we saw a lot of colorful maximalism and playful patterns, but according to manicurists, things might be taking a turn this fall.

It comes around every year and honestly, I never get tired of it. The deep wine shade is truly stunning and incredibly timeless. "I believe its renewed popularity reflects a return to a more elegant and sophisticated aesthetic," says nail artist Kateryna Tsabilieva. "Deep wine, cherry, and oxblood shades feel luxurious while remaining incredibly versatile."

Olive & Moss Green

This may be a hot take but deep greens like this one in addition to olive tones are underrated. And one of the best parts about fall is that you can truly play with the range. "Olive and moss shades have a natural connection to the season, reflecting the earthy, organic tones we associate with autumn," says Tsabilieva. "At the same time, green is less expected than traditional burgundy or brown, which makes it a great choice for clients who want something modern and individual without going overly bold."

Plum & Midnight Purple

You don't see this color very often, but pros expect to see an uptick specifically in plum and midnight purple. "Purple takes on a much deeper and more dramatic character this fall, with plum, rich royal purple, and nearly black midnight shades coming into focus," says Tsabilieva. "I see these colors as a beautiful alternative to classic black nails."

Chrome Finishes

Of all the trends that our experts called out, I'm least surprised to see chrome and metallic finishes still in the mix. This is one of those trends that have absolutely dominated throughout the entire year, and personally, I'm always excited to see how nail artists continue to integrate these kind of designs. "What makes chrome especially interesting is that it can completely transform a familiar seasonal shade without changing the color itself," says Tsabilieva "A subtle chrome powder over burgundy, chocolate brown, olive, or deep plum creates a beautiful multidimensional effect and gives the manicure a more modern, sophisticated feel."

Natural Pink

As minimalist nails continue to rise on social media, it only makes sense that these natural pink nails will be seen throughout fall. We already saw bare nails have their moment, and now neutral tones like this one serve as a great way to stay in line with the trend without fully committing to going polish-free. A soft and subtle light pink color that adds a polished and more elevated look than bare nails. "Natural “minimalist” nails have been popular throughout the summer, and will evolve as we head into fall," says manicurist and global educator at Salon Perfect Vicki Ornellas. "People can play around with their pink manicures, opting for a sheer, barely there look or a slightly deeper shade."

At the start of autumn, lots of my friends tend to swap out their summer nail trends for rich, deep nail colours, from burgundy to navy blue and even forest green. And as much as I love these autumnal nail shades, as someone who often gravitates towards sheer pink polishes and milky nails in the summer months, I still find myself wanting a neutral manicure come September.

Look, I love a minimal manicure as much as the next person. Ok, this is a trend that I've actually spotted myself, and I have a feeling it's going to be big this autumn. Whilst chocolate brown nail polishes were all the rage this time last year, it seems that chocolate brown nail art is the way to go this season. 6. Unexpected Lilac

A rather unexpected one for the autumn months, but super chic nonetheless. "Predominantly popular in spring, lilac is having an autumnal moment," says Francis. However, for the autumn months, Francis tells me that this shade is more muted and reminiscent of cosy knits. I think I will definitely have to give this a go.

As we turn towards the new season (and the great British weather returning to its usual programming after a summer of heatwaves), I'm positively brimming with excitement. Not just because soon I'll be able to bring out my boots and cashmere once again, but also because I'll be able to wear the Autumn/Winter 2026 beauty trends that I saw all over the runways back in February.

As a beauty editor who has been studying fashion week beauty looks for over a decade, it feels like fun is finally being had with the hair, makeup and nails backstage again. Don't get me wrong, I loved the pared-back, effortless looks we've seen backstage in seasons prior, but for Autumn/Winter 2026, the runways have decreed a return to maximalism in many ways. Bare nails? We're wearing bold nail art again. Bare lids and lashes? It's time to dust off your eyeshadow palette. Short hair? Nope, we're all growing out our bob haircuts.

Of course, there are remnants of the minimalist and effortless moods we've seen previously (take note of the absence of bold blusher this season); however, even the more out-there trends remain completely wearable. 1. Barely-There Blush

Bold blush has been dominating our feeds and makeup bags and most new launches for the best part of the decade so far, but this season, we're seeing a more subdued look emerging on our cheeks. In fact, it's barely there. Instead of brightly painted cheeks, the models at Victoria Beckham, Fendi and Altuzzarra had delicate, natural flushes that you'd see from a brisk walk on the first cold day of autumn.

At Ralph Lauren, the blusher placement was lower on the cheek; replicating softly windswept cheeks feels more authentic than the sculpting blusher placements we've seen that sit higher on the cheekbones. At Victoria Beckham, makeup artist Lucia Pica drew inspiration from the gentle flushes in the portraits by artist Tamara de Łempicka. “The skin remains beautifully transparent and perfected, with a gentle touch of pink on the cheeks that brings a fresh, unexpected warmth to the complexion," she says.

2. Great Lengths

It's undeniable that short haircuts and bobs have been dominating the fashion set of late, but if the A/W26 shows are anything to go by, now may be the time to grow your hair out long. We saw waist-skimming pre-raphaelite lengths finished with plaited accents at Chloe and Acne Studios, whereas the hair looks at Patrick McDowell and Holzweiler showcased long, buoyant curls in all their halo-like glory. The common thread is that each show enhanced the models' natural texture.

Hairstylist Anthony Turner explained how he achieved the effortless wavy lengths at Chloé. "The hair itself feels very weather. It's mountainous, it's windy, it's sunny, she's making her way through all of the elements," he says. "A lot of the girls have naturally very curly hair, so we're using the Dyson Supersonic R Hairdryer (£450) with the diffuser on the end and making [the curls] even more. For the girls with really long hair, we've braided them, taken the braids out and then brushed them."

3. Eyeshadow Abundance

After seasons of bare lids and the omission of any mascara from the lashes, A/W26 is heralding the triumphant return of bold eye makeup once more. From holographic silver dusted on both the lids and the hair at Chanel to metallic purple smouldering the eyes at Carolina Herrera, now is the time to pull out the shimmers and glitters that have been waiting in the wings inside your eyeshadow palette.

At Acne Studios, the eyes were a study in colour, with bright smudges of apple green and electric blue winged from the model's sockets, but if you prefer something more subdued, take inspiration from the makeup at Tolu Coker, which saw models with hazy washes of blue, spanning from smoked petrol blue to powdery hues. Either way, it's time to dust off those eyeshadow brushes and get creative.

4. Nail Renaissance

At several shows in past seasons, we've become accustomed to seeing bare nail-inspired looks with sheer washes of pink backstage—or even nothing at all. However, the A/W26 shows welcomed back nail art and shimmering shades in all their glimmering glory. Long almond nails adorned with aura nail art and reverse French tips featured at Christian Cowan and Harris Reed, whilst bold blues were painted on the nails at Proenza Schouler. But perhaps the most mesmerising of all were the jewel-like nails at Chanel.

"In and amongst the classic pieces of the Chanel A/W26 collection, the clothes and accessories had an element of fantasy; the metamorphosis of the caterpillar into a butterfly," says Ama Quashie, the key session manicurist behind the looks. "So for the nails I tapped into my favourite elements of insect and bug colourings, choosing a palette that touched on iridescent and subtle shimmers," she says. "It feels like globally we’ve collectively and individually had a hard couple of years, definitely some more than others. In a time where we’re being stripped of so much, fantasy and escapism, even on the smallest canvas, remind us of the simple joy of beauty."

5. Parting Shift

Perhaps the easiest trend to adopt from the Autumn/Winter 2026 shows is switching your parting. We saw deep side partings and swooping side fringes all over the runways this season, so take this as your sign to switch from a middle part. It's a great way to boost volume for finer hair, too.

Hairstylist Anthony Turner created a sleek side-parted style for the Victoria Beckham show, explaining: “We wanted the hair to feel effortless and feminine but still refined. There’s a strong side parting which gives the look structure, but the overall feeling is relaxed and slightly undone—almost like the girls have already been to the after-show party," he says. "It’s simple, elegant hair with a little bit of personality and ease.”

6. Smoked Eyes

The smoky eye is a timeless Autumn/Winter makeup trend; however, it was particularly prevalent on the runways this season in a whole spectrum of smouldering shades. At Connor Ives, Dominic Skinner, director of makeup artistry for MAC UKI, drew inspiration from femme fatales of the '60s, with an '80s twist of garage door eyeshadow, generously applied all over the lids and up to the brow bone. At Hermès, the eyes were framed in nocturnal shades of deep green-grey and midnight blue, whilst at Rabanne, the effect was softer but mesmerising with watercolour washes of burnt umber buffed all over on the upper and lower lids. And if you're feeling bold, you could even channel Bella Hadid's smudgy, sooty kohl-lined eyes at Prada. Get your eyeliners and eyeshadows at the ready.
