Even as a beauty editor who writes about manicures daily, I find it hard to keep up with the ever-changing nail trends. Sure, some classic looks have stuck around for a while now, from French tips to milky nails, but there's also always a new nail polish colour or nail art look to be trying almost every week, and honestly? Sometimes it's a bit too much.

That's why, these days, I tend to stick to timeless shades and nail designs that I know will always be in style. That being said, I still like to switch up my manicure now and again, so I wanted to get an expert's opinion on some of the most timeless nail trends to see what other looks I could try.

It's simple, really: Manicures are much easier to swap out than, say, a popular hair color, which makes experimenting with trending designs feel low-lift and fun. But there's a slight cost to this playful experimentation. By the time one nail look reaches fever pitch on our Instagram feeds, the next It mani is already brewing in experts' brains. To get ahead of the curve, I asked those very experts which designs they predict will peak this month, specifically for short nails—somewhat selfish ask considering I don't use builder gel or extensions!

According to celebrity manicurist Julie Kandalec—who frequently attends nail expos overseas and always has her finger on the pulse—you don't need tons of length to dabble in cool designs. Cat-Eye Nails

Take it from Kandalec: "Magnetic shades (cat eye) look really stunning on short nails." These orb-like manicures provide tons of texture, much like chrome finishes, and naturally catch the eye without any length. Feel free to opt for any color you please, but if you're looking for something timeless, we'd recommend choosing pink. As Kandalec previously told WWW about the design, "pink is and will always be that girl—the most versatile color."

Tortoiseshell Accents

If you're feeling bold, she also recommends adding a few tortoiseshell nails to your cat-eye set, or you can always commit to a full-on tortoiseshell mani. Because tortoiseshell is a busier pattern, you can paint it on a smaller slice of real estate (e.g., shorter nails) and still show off the entire print.

Rose Quartz

Another busy print, mineral-inspired patterns like rose quartz look super chic on short nails. Kandalec would also add marble to that same category. Think precious stones that look natural with an organic, small shape.

Negative-Space Art

"Nails with negative space with a single shape, like one stripe or star, allow the [nail] shape to take center stage," shares Kandalec. I'm especially partial to these milky floral nails from celebrity manicurist Harriet Westmoreland, which feature a tiny daisy on a glossy, sheer-pink base. "These look really cool in matte too," adds Kandalec.

Plaid Nails

Plaid nails were all the rage this spring, but Kandalec predicted this 2026 nail trend would surely "stick around for a while." Well, here we are in August, and we're definitely seeing the preppy nail design prevail, especially on shorter tips. See, according to Kandalec, the pattern is super elongating thanks to the vertical stripes, which create the illusion of extended nails. It's the perfect design to pick if you're craving length but don't want to mess with gel extensions.

Gold French

A French manicure always looks chic, but if you're craving something a little extra, Kandalec suggests choosing a metallic gold polish for "a hint of flash and luxury." Another pro tip: To elongate your natural nails, opt for a French manicure with a deeper smile line as opposed to painting the stripe straight across the tip.

Deep Blackberry

"I absolutely love dark colors on shorter nails," Kandalec shares. "There is nothing sexier than a short, soft-square blackberry nail." You heard the expert! Sure, you might associate the moody hue with fall, but there's something about a rich polish during summer that screams chic. Don't just take my word for it; "summerween" manis are super hot right now!

Glass Nails

An ultra-glossy jelly polish, aka glass nails, also looks incredibly chic on shorter tips. "Yes, they can be worn on any length technically," Kandalec caveats. "But with them being short, the milky/jelly tone has an equal opacity without the free edge, making it look more put-together and purposeful."

Nuance Nails

Finally, we have nuance nails, which involve three or more colors layered on top of each other for an intricately swirled manicure. "This style is popular in Japan right now," Kandalec shares. "Because the colors are always layered together differently, no nail will ever look the same"—hence the term "nuance nails." To choose your polish palette, "you can use websites such as Coolors or ColorKit to create combos," advises Kandalec. "Since nail brands put out collections that are already cohesive, just grab three to four shades from a brand's latest launch, and you know they will all work together."

Off the back of quiet luxury and stealth wealth, the sheer pinks, milky shades and understated chromes have been the dominating shades we've collectively been wearing. When it comes to nails, I consider myself a nail minimalist. I'm a beauty editor who studies nail trends for a living, but for the most part, you'll usually find a sheer pink or milky white nail colour painted on my nails, no matter the time of the year. However, during summer, I like to push the boat out just a little. And after looking for some nail art inspiration that still appeals to my pared-back aesthetic, my thumbs paused on this stunning aura nail art that came up on my feed, and I've never been more excited to try it.

Pink Aura Nails

Aura nails are similar to ombré nails in that they both blend two nail colours together. Whilst ombre transitions from one colour to another vertically, aura nails blur outwards from the centre of the nail, creating a halo-like glow around your nails. And in this strawberry colourway, it's the perfect way to dabble in something a little different from a neutral manicure for summer whilst keeping things minimalistic. It's like a blush tint for your nails.

For this look, Manicurist Mateja Novakovic used two Manucurist nail colours, including Halo for the base (a milky, shimmering pink) and centred Bloom in the middle of the nail for the bright pop of strawberry. All you have to do is apply your base colour and then use a sponge to dab on your second shade, diffusing it into a seamless transition. Finish with a top coat, and there you have your aura nail art. Lately, though, I've been tempted to branch out from my basic aesthetic and embrace an outdated trend that's made its way back into the limelight. I'm talking about the old-school French pedicure. Yep, the same French pedicure that was number one throughout the late '90s and early 2000s. It's been flooding my FYP all summer, but recently, it's reached peak saturation with celebrity nail artists and hot-ticket salons showing off all kinds of ultra-chic iterations.

The French pedicure is out of trend hibernation thanks to two things: the internet's obsession with sophisticated nail designs and all things Y2K. (I'm looking at you, Zara Larsson!) Regardless, it's the most stylish pedicure of summer 2026. Keep scrolling for all the evidence you need.

What is a French pedicure?

A French pedicure is the same thing as a French manicure—just, well, on the toes. It's a simple, minimalist design that traditionally involves painting a crisp white or off-white line across the top of each nail, although some French pedicures incorporate other colors like pink and butter yellow. When doing a French pedicure at home, the trick is to focus on the nail and cuticle prep, ensuring you have a clean, fresh, and precise base to work with.

How to Do a French Pedicure

Step 1: Foot & Cuticle Prep

Precise nail and cuticle prep is *everything* when attempting a DIY French pedicure. Depending on personal preference, time, and comfort level, nail artists often recommend soaking your feet for five to 10 minutes, exfoliating with a foot scrub, and then applying a cuticle remover to the base of the toes before pushing the cuticles back with a tool. Sally Hansen's Instant Cuticle Remover ($6) is my go-to. It works in 30 seconds and makes my nail beds look so smooth and fresh. Did I mention it comes highly recommended from an IG-famous dermatologist?

Step 2: The Base Color

Once the feet and cuticles are prepped, it's time to paint. Start with a base color. Traditionally, sheer, neutral nail colors have been used for this, but don't be afraid to mix a few shades to find your perfect one. This is a tip I learned from Hailey Bieber's nail artist, Zola Ganzorigt, who never uses just one shade. She mixes them to create a bespoke shade that complements each client's skin tone. A few of her go-to colors are below. You can also veer away from standard neutrals and choose a jelly one. Sheer pink, butter yellow, and lilac are flooding my FYP.

Step 3: The French Pedi

There are a couple of different ways you can create a professional-looking French pedicure at home. First, you can use a tapered nail brush to manually paint it across the top of the nail. This method works if you have a steady hand. Personally, though, I like using a stencil to get the perfect half-moon shape. I like Orly's Half Moon Guides ($7), which are wide enough to fit my toes just as well as they fit my fingers.

Call me old-fashioned, but I love a timeless, neutral nail trend. I know, I know, maximalist nail art is having a moment, and whilst I can fully appreciate how incredible it looks, nothing makes me feel more polished than a milky nail polish or white French tip. That being said, I'm always open to trying something new (as long as it fits my neutral aesthetic, of course), and when I spotted butter yellow nails on my Instagram feed, it was love at first sight.

Don't get it twisted. A red pedicure will never truly fall from grace. It's one of the most timeless polish colors you can choose, but that doesn't mean you can't switch things up every once in a while! If that sounds like you, I suggest opting for one of summer's most stylish hues, such as cobalt blue, hot pink, or punchy orange—the latter of which I'm dubbing the "persimmon pedicure." Yes, it may look similar to a classic coat of red at first glance, but I promise the slight tweak spices things up just right. According to celebrity manicurist Julie Kandalec, a juicy persimmon polish is the perfect combination of classic and fresh. "It's still close to red, which, to me, is one of the most chic shades," she explains. "It's crisp and goes with everything all summer long." That said, the orangey hue bumps up the vibrancy and warmth, making it a solid choice for beach season. Editorial manicurist Jin Soon Choi would agree, as she previously shared that vivid oranges (like persimmon!) "feel energetic and sunlit" without completely overpowering an outfit. How to Get the Look

A rich coat of persimmon polish is really all you need. While you can absolutely play with intricate designs (French tips, micro nail art, etc.), Kandalec recommends opting for a classic, solid pedicure to "let the color do all the talking." That said, she says you could add a chrome powder or subtly shimmery topcoat over it to make it look even more on-trend. "I'm seeing a lot of shimmer accents and topcoats this summer! And why not? The way they reflect the sun is so stunning," she adds.

In terms of persimmon polishes, she suggests selecting a formula with a shiny, creamy finish. "My pick is Candy by The GelBottle. That one skews more red than orange. If you happen to have a bottle of the, again, retired but still iconic Essie Clambake, that's a fave as well," she notes. "Also Kokoist Vermilion Orange, and Nail Thoughts in Wake Me Up." The strawberry manicure is shaping up to be one of the biggest summer nail trends. It's juicy and glossy, which feels playful yet polished, making it the perfect summer update on milky manicures we've been seeing for the past few seasons. What I love about a strawberry manicure is that it's a chic yet very wearable summer nail colour. The trend actually inspired me to create my new shade, Strawberry Blush. I wanted a true glassy pink for my kit; something completely sheer, with no white pigment in it. My vision was for it to look like a juicy and translucent strawberry gloss for the nails. It took around 18 months of testing and refining formulas to achieve exactly the right finish, but the final result is everything I hoped.

How to Create a Strawberry-Blush Manicure

For anyone wanting to re-create the look, nail preparation is key. I always start by thoroughly prepping the nail, focusing on creating the perfect foundation. After gently pushing back the cuticles and lightly exfoliating any dry skin around the nail, I softly buff the nail plate, cleanse with acetone and then begin the gel application.

My go-to application is Glass Base (£20), followed by Strawberry Blush Glass Gel (£25) and then Glass Top (£20). For the ultimate glossy finish, I always recommend pairing it with a high-shine base coat and top coat; that extra shine is what gives the manicure its signature glass-like finish. Once everything is cured, I perfect the shape with a final file.

Personally, I love applying it using an apex technique, which creates a beautifully smooth, curved surface that catches the light from every angle. This is where the manicure really comes to life, as the nails almost look like little glass jewels.

One of the things I love most about Strawberry Blush is how versatile it is. With just one coat, you get a flush of pink that enhances the nail's natural tone. As you build additional layers, the colour becomes more vibrant, allowing you to completely customise the effect.

The beauty of the strawberry manicure is that it can be tailored to suit everyone. Some of my clients prefer a single sheer layer for the most natural result, whilst others love a more built-up, pinker flush of colour. I like layering a milky nude shade underneath, then applying a single coat of Strawberry Blush on top. It creates the most beautiful soft-pink glow for anyone who wants a hint of colour without committing to a brighter pink nail colour.
