It's funny to think that one of 2022's hottest nail trends was started completely by accident. All it took was Hailey Bieber and her trusty nail artist Zola Ganzorigt. "Glazed donut nails" were an on-a-whim idea Ganzorigt had that would complement Bieber's 2022 Met Gala dress. She decided to top Bieber's otherwise sheer mani with OPI's Chrome Effects powder in Tin Man Can, adding a pearly, ethereal sheen that soon took the internet by storm. Now, even years later, glazed donut nails are here to stay. Sure, they were trendier a few years ago, but Ganzorigt created something elegant that stood the test of time.

Now, she and OPI partnered recently to breathe new life into the glazed donut look by creating four chrome powders that can be paired with a myriad of gel polishes. "This collection was inspired by the nail looks I find myself creating repeatedly," she tells Who What Wear. "For me, chrome has always been a way to transform a manicure and add a new dimension to a look. When it comes to nails, I consider myself a nail minimalist. I'm a beauty editor who studies nail trends for a living, but for the most part, you'll usually find a sheer pink or milky white nail colour painted on my nails, no matter the time of the year. However, during summer, I like to push the boat out just a little. And after looking for some nail art inspiration that still appeals to my pared-back aesthetic, my thumbs paused on this stunning aura nail art that came up on my feed, and I've never been more excited to try it.

Pink Aura Nails

Aura nails are similar to ombré nails in that they both blend two nail colours together. Whilst ombre transitions from one colour to another vertically, aura nails blur outwards from the centre of the nail, creating a halo-like glow around your nails. A French pedicure is the same thing as a French manicure—just, well, on the toes. It's a simple, minimalist design that traditionally involves painting a crisp white or off-white line across the top of each nail, although some French pedicures incorporate other colors like pink and butter yellow. When doing a French pedicure at home, the trick is to focus on the nail and cuticle prep, ensuring you have a clean, fresh, and precise base to work with.

How to Do a French Pedicure

Step 1: Foot & Cuticle Prep

Precise nail and cuticle prep is *everything* when attempting a DIY French pedicure. Depending on personal preference, time, and comfort level, nail artists often recommend soaking your feet for five to 10 minutes, exfoliating with a foot scrub, and then applying a cuticle remover to the base of the toes before pushing the cuticles back with a tool. Sally Hansen's Instant Cuticle Remover ($6) is my go-to. It works in 30 seconds and makes my nail beds look so smooth and fresh. Did I mention it comes highly recommended from an IG-famous dermatologist?

Step 2: The Base Color

Once the feet and cuticles are prepped, it's time to paint. Start with a base color. Traditionally, sheer, neutral nail colors have been used for this, but don't be afraid to mix a few shades to find your perfect one. This is a tip I learned from Hailey Bieber's nail artist, Zola Ganzorigt, who never uses just one shade. She mixes them to create a bespoke shade that complements each client's skin tone. A few of her go-to colors are below. You can also veer away from standard neutrals and choose a jelly one. Sheer pink, butter yellow, and lilac are flooding my FYP.

Step 3: The French Pedi

There are a couple of different ways you can create a professional-looking French pedicure at home. First, you can use a tapered nail brush to manually paint it across the top of the nail. This method works if you have a steady hand. Personally, though, I like using a stencil to get the perfect half-moon shape. I like Orly's Half Moon Guides ($7), which are wide enough to fit my toes just as well as they fit my fingers.

Call me old-fashioned, but I love a timeless, neutral nail trend. I know, I know, maximalist nail art is having a moment, and whilst I can fully appreciate how incredible it looks, nothing makes me feel more polished than a milky nail polish or white French tip. That being said, I'm always open to trying something new (as long as it fits my neutral aesthetic, of course), and when I spotted butter yellow nails on my Instagram feed, it was love at first sight.

The way they reflect the sun is so stunning," she adds.

In my humble opinion, chic nail designs peak in the summer months. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for a moody, burgundy French tip or minimalist rhinestone, but there's something about warmer weather that makes beauty enthusiasts want to experiment, which often results in some pretty spectacular nail trends. Seaglass nails! Iced finishes! Mixed berry color combos! The limit does not exist when it comes to statement-making summer looks.

My recent fixation? The swoon-worthy "pill box" manicure. "I’ve been eyeing this quirky little trend of pill box nails for a while now," L.A.-based celebrity manicurist Queenie Nguyen declares in a recent Instagram post—one that made me stop everything and screenshot for my next salon appointment. No, it doesn't involve actual tablets or bottles on your nails (unless you're celebrity nail artist Mei Kawajiri, who showcased a literal interpretation of the trend), and it's actually easier to achieve at home than a crisp French mani. As you can see from the photo above, pill box nails involve a variety of high-contrast polish combinations split down the center of the nail plate. Given the shape and stark color pairings, it closely resembles a handful of vibrant capsules from a weekly pill organizer. Get it? "It feels playful, slightly nostalgic, a little retro, and somehow still cool at the same time," Nguyen continues in her caption. Milan-based nail artist Oksana Zavora would agree, as she cosigned the trend a couple months ago after feeling specifically inspired by the hues from YSL's commercial campaign in Marrakech. Like Nguyen's, the look includes an array of multicolored polishes, only with a few color-blocked accent nails—or "pills."

So it’s no surprise that when I discovered the marvel of water lily–inspired shoes, turtle-shaped purses, and chrysanthemum-adorned two-pieces cascading down Dior’s runway at the Jardin des Tuileries in Paris, I was quickly influenced to translate the show’s palette into my own look.

To channel the bag’s freshwater hue, I opted for Victoria Beckham’s EyeWear cream shadow in the shade Cornflower. After swiping this color all over my lids, I blended the color into my crease with a fluffy brush and intensified the look with Hung Vanngo’s Color Story Eyeshadow Palette in Brilliant Blue. Perhaps the most literal beauty interpretation of this collection that I’ve seen yet is this set by Milan-based professional and editorial manicurist Oksana Zavora. Each nail is accented with a smattering of water lilies, chrysanthemums, pastel French tips, and 3D decals in the form of bubbles or rhinestones—all directly inspired by the collection itself.
