Recently, I've found myself in fashion purgatory. As someone old enough to remember the original Y2K era, I look at girls too young to remember tamagotchis, the Nokia 3210 or the Friends finale with envy. While I may dare to embrace low-rise jeans this winter, butterfly tops and exposed G-strings are firmly behind me. That said, I'm not quite mature enough to have a uniform that never falls short of cashmere polo-necks and designer tailoring. In the words of Y2K icon Britney Spears, when it comes to my style, "I'm not a girl, not yet a woman."

Because of this, I always find myself browsing for pieces that have both classic and trend-forward elements. I look out for brands that provide elevated staples in cooler cuts and trend-led prints at an affordable price point. Thankfully, I have Monki to thank for exactly this type of clothing. Now read: I just tried on M&S's best-selling jeans, and I'm officially a convert. 

I admit it; I have expensive taste, and I'm also quite (read: very) picky. I always have been. When I was a teenager, knowledge of labels generally wasn't as prevalent as now. (We have the internet and social media to thank for that.) But even then, I found myself gravitating towards pieces of substance and brands of note over the quick and easy wardrobe updates that would tempt my friends. I dressed older than my years, which, at the time, sometimes meant I felt the opposite of "trendy". Looking back, however, at photographs of my best friend's 16th birthday party, to which I wore wide-leg tailored trousers and a silky camisole, I'm just grateful that such photographs don't make me cringe today.

Now, a fully-fledged adult, I'm still picky and have the same expensive taste. My budget, however? Well, it doesn't always allow me to indulge in the latter. As such, I've become something of a dab hand at spotting expensive-looking pieces at any price point, as well as unearthing the pieces that are worth a more significant investment. Style Notes: Loafers are a classic wardrobe staple that will never go out of style. Thanks to brands like The Row and Gucci, who put them on the map, they’re considered to be a very premium footwear choice (even if you buy yours on the high street).

The noughties have been rebranded a bit this year. Numerous Y2K fashion trends—crystal belts, cowl-necks and more—have officially been adopted by the TikTok crowd and are experiencing a revival. And there’s one high-street brand, in particular, that has mastered all things Y2K. Monki always has playful, youthful styling, so it’ll come as no surprise that it’s fully embraced cut-outs, groovy prints and slinky silhouettes.

During the autumn months, our wardrobes tend to become a sea of beiges, browns and blacks, and while we will always love the enduring appeal of a minimalist colour palette, now more than ever, we're craving endorphins in fashion form. I have to admit when it comes to my own personal shopping, I can in my 30s sometimes (wrongly) assume that the likes of Weekday, Monki and ASOS will be a little young for my taste. With this in mind, I set out to find some affordable summer accessories that will work to enhance any outfit. I trawled through the web, using influencers as my inspiration to see what's already trending online, and of course, the style set did not disappoint.

1. Printed Scarf

Tie it around a basket bag, tie it around your ponytail, or tie it around yourself as a top at the beach. With a silk scarf, the summery options are practically endless. It's such a versatile accessory and one of the simplest ways to add a pop of pattern or colour to an outfit. 

2. Sun-Smart Bucket Hats

Gone are the days of tanning with SPF 4 carrot oil. Now, we're all much more aware of the harm the sun can do to our skin, especially on our faces that see it the most. As well as SPF (of course), a hat is a great option for staying safe in the sun, and bucket hats might just be our favourite style for adding personality. Luckily, there is an array of cute ones on the high street to choose from, whether your vibe is floral and printed or minimalist and plain. 

3. Mood-Boosting Jewellery

Don't get me wrong—I love classic silver and gold as much as the next person, but for summer, I also love to introduce some pieces that bring a little more joy. Think multicoloured necklaces, beaded bracelets and more. 

4. Retro-Inspired Scrunchie

While they might remind some of the '80s, scrunchies are a great summer accessory. This summer they're chicer than ever before. Make like Carrie Bradshaw and add one to any and all of your looks, dressed up or down. 

5. Flatform Sandals

No surprises here. Chunky sandals are once again at the top of the footwear list for 2022. Specifically flatforms—choose from strappy slides or thong sandals, as long as they've got a sturdy sole. 

6. Sleek Sunglasses

This one is rather self-explanatory, as sunglasses are one of the summer essentials we rely on year after year. This summer, I'm opting for tortoiseshell frames and sleek silhouettes like oval, rectangle and cat-eye. 

7. Strappy Sandals

On days when you want to upgrade from your chunky flats, strappy sandals are the way to go. There are plenty of great options floating around the high street. Plus, many of them come with block heels for added support.

Finding those elusive dream jeans is in my opinion about as hard a challenge as training for a half marathon. We know it’s doable, but it takes a lot of time, effort and hard work to get there. This winter might look set to be a tough one, with many travel restrictions still in place and varying levels of limitations on socialising for us all. But, that’s not to say all is lost. We’re all about making the most of what’s in front of us, which means preparing ourselves as well as we can for a great British winter. As temperatures drop, comfort becomes more and more important, and we've just found a coat that's as close as you'll get to wearing a duvet outside of the house. Speaking of resolutions, this year I’m making a promise to myself to add some more fun pieces to my wardrobe. I’ve done some research on 2016 fashion trends, and so far I love what I’m seeing. Let’s just say I’ll be adding quite a few of the items below to my shopping cart! From slip dresses to mixed metallics, here are the trends I’m predicting to be big in 2016… Happy shopping!

A slinky, silky slip dress is all you need to feel sexy. It’s as simple as that. I’ve been seeing this feminine silhouette pop up here and there lately, and I know it’s only going to get more and more popular as the year goes on. Invest in a classic black style, one with a pop of color, or a pretty gold metallic version.

Bell sleeve tops are fun to wear with shorts, pencil skirts, and your favorite pair of jeans. And they’re on the fashion forecast for 2016! I’m loving the red, white, and printed styles below. It’s all in the little details…

I love wearing metallics in any way, shape, or form. So when I saw that mixed metallics are in this year, I started pulling all of my shiny, shimmery pieces out of my closet to prepare. Rock this trend by combining hints of metallics in your shoes, bag, clothes, and even nail polish.

While the heeled mule had its moment in 2015, this year, it’s all about the flat mule. This slip-on style is so easy to wear with cuffed or cropped jeans, and it gives off those effortlessly cool model-off-duty vibes. Slide into a leopard, velvet, suede, or black tasseled pair to get the look.

There’s something about the texture of suede that makes me feel like I’m transported right back to the 1970s. This year, suede button-down skirts, jackets, and accessories continue to be all the rage. So, you can imagine my excitement when I found out that pleated pieces are predicted to be big this year, especially in the spring. It seems that 2016 is taking a style cue from the ’70s! If you couldn’t get your flower child fix from the fringe and suede pieces I already have on this list, then this next trend is for you. The romantic, flowy maxi dress is a gorgeous silhouette, and it can be styled so many ways. I love each of the styles below paired with some heeled booties and a crossbody bag for a breezy look.

The right flare can help give length and elongate the legs, especially if you are petite with curves.

If you're on the petite side, there are many great cropped options out there. But denim is also easy to alter, so don't limit yourself because of your height. Something to keep in mind when getting your jeans hemmed is to find a tailor who knows how to properly hem denim. Usually the best solution is to cut off the original hem and to reapply it, so you keep the authentic denim stitch and thread.

If you want to hide some of your not-so-favourite curves, try a straight leg, which helps to balance out your curves.

Explore and try on as many different fits as you have time for. Often, it's the fit you think won’t work for you that you end up falling in love with.
