The most common changes I see in my mature clients are increased dryness, dullness, loss of firmness, fine lines, slower healing and a reduction in overall radiance. Cell turnover naturally slows, collagen production declines, and the skin barrier becomes more vulnerable to dehydration and environmental stressors.

Rather than trying to correct every visible sign of ageing, I recommend prioritising skin health first. Well-hydrated, resilient skin almost always looks smoother, brighter and healthier regardless of age. How to Build a Skincare Routine for Mature Skin

Whenever I'm building a skincare routine for clients, I follow one simple principle: every product should have a clear purpose. Rather than layering multiple products that all claim to do the same thing, I focus on creating a balanced routine that protects the skin during the day and supports repair overnight.

In the morning, the priority is prevention. This means cleansing away overnight oil and sweat before applying antioxidants to help defend against free radical damage, moisturising ingredients to strengthen the skin barrier and, most importantly, a broad-spectrum sunscreen to protect collagen from UV damage. No anti-ageing product will outperform daily SPF.

Evening skincare is where I encourage clients to invest a little more time. Whilst we sleep, the skin naturally shifts into repair mode, making it the ideal time to introduce ingredients like retinoids that encourage collagen production and improve skin texture over time. Because mature skin is often drier, I also like to pair stronger actives with hydrating serums and nourishing moisturisers to minimise irritation and keep the skin barrier healthy.

Above all, don't feel pressured to overhaul your routine overnight. Introduce one active ingredient at a time, allow your skin several weeks to adjust and prioritise consistency over perfection. A morning cleanse helps remove sweat, excess oil and any skincare residue left behind overnight without stripping the skin. For mature skin, I always recommend a gentle, hydrating cleanser rather than anything that leaves the skin feeling tight or squeaky clean. Cream, milk and low-foaming gel formulas are all excellent options, particularly if your skin leans dry or sensitive. Despite all of the skincare products out there, a good routine doesn't need to be super extensive. This is especially the case for people with mature skin who are trying to find the right balance to address some of their most common concerns like fine lines, wrinkles, and dark spots. At the same time, with changes to our skin come changes to our regimen. So although you may not need dozens of products, you'll still need to hunt for the right formulas.

In fact, I've been keeping a close eye on my mother's trial-and-error process as she finds herself dealing with dryness and new sensitivities, and it's made me super aware of just how delicate skin becomes as we age. So naturally, I've been curious about what exactly it is that mature skin needs to continue thriving.

To find out, I chatted with leading board-certified dermatologists Dendy Engelman, MD, and Anetta Reszko, MD, for a full day and night step-by-step guide for the ultimate anti-aging skincare routine.

Morning Skincare Routine

Step 1: Cleanser

Before any cream or serum, it's best to start with a clean base with the help of a cleanser. "An effective anti-aging morning routine should focus on protecting the skin from environmental damage while supporting hydration and barrier function," says Reszko. "Cleansing removes excess oil, sweat, and debris accumulated overnight without compromising the skin barrier." For your ideal formula, Engelman notes that formulas with ingredients such as glycerin, ceramides, and soothing botanical extracts are key.

Step 2 (Optional): Face Mist

This step is optional, but if you have a face mist you love, this is the time to use it. "A hydrating mist can help replenish moisture and prepare the skin for subsequent products, particularly during the hotter summer months when increased heat and sun exposure can contribute to dehydration," says Reszko. For a lightweight formula that leaves skin soft and hydrated, she recommends Bioeffect's EGF Essence.

Step 3: Serum

Once you have a clean base, grab your toner or serum for a boost of antioxidants. "Serums are one of the most important morning steps because ingredients such as vitamin C, vitamin E, ferulic acid, and other antioxidant complexes help protect against oxidative stress generated by UV exposure and environmental pollutants while supporting collagen health and overall skin radiance," explains Reszko. She's a big fan of the SKORR Anti-Ox Serum with vitamin C and E.

Step 4: Eye Cream

If you've been skipping on eye cream, this step is a must. A lot of standard face moisturizers aren't meant for the delicate skin around the eyes, so finding specific formulas for it is essential. "The skin around the eyes is thinner and often shows signs of aging first," says Engelman. "Look for formulas with peptides, caffeine, hyaluronic acid, and niacinamide to help hydrate, smooth and visibly refresh the eye area."

Step 5: Moisturizer

This step is a given for anyone. And while there are plenty of formulas out there, there are still certain ingredients to look for. "A good moisturizer helps maintain a healthy skin barrier, improve hydration, and support overall skin resilience," says Engelman. "Look for ingredients like ceramides, peptides, hyaluronic acid and nourishing lipids." For best results, Reszko suggests using Augustinus Bader's The Cream.

Step 6: Sunscreen

No matter your age or skin concerns, sunscreen is a nonnegotiable. Using one daily can prevent signs of premature aging and prevent further damage from occurring. "Daily sunscreen remains the most important anti-aging product in any skincare routine because it helps protect against UV-induced collagen breakdown, hyperpigmentation, and premature aging," says Reszko, who recommends Isdin's Eryfotona Ageless SPF 50." Engelman adds that it's best to look for a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher (as recommended by The American Academy of Dermatology).

Nighttime Routine

Step 1: Cleanser

Some people prefer to cleanse only once a day, but both of our experts agree that cleansing twice is a good opportunity to get rid of any dirt that accumulates on your face throughout the day. "Nighttime cleansing removes sunscreen, makeup, pollution, and daily buildup, creating a clean canvas for your treatment products," says Engelman. "Double cleansing may be beneficial for those who wear makeup or water-resistant sunscreen."

Step 2: Toner

Once again, a toner or treatment serum will be needed as a follow-up step to your cleanser. "Skin naturally enters repair mode overnight, making this the ideal time for targeted treatments," says Engelman. I'm a beauty editor who has sensitive skin. That means I must walk a metaphorical tightrope with my routine—testing hundreds of new skincare products per year (it's literally my job) without causing irritation, exacerbating inflammation, or setting off a rosacea flare-up. "This includes those with conditions like atopic dermatitis, rosacea, and acne, as well as anyone prone to allergies or recovering from skin treatments. Fragrance can trigger irritation, redness, or flare-ups regardless of whether it’s natural or synthetic, so fragrance-free products are usually the safest option for these skin types."

Briana Germano, registered nurse, aesthetic injector, and founder of The Aesthetic Bar, agrees, reiterating the importance of avoiding fragrance if you're post-procedure (e.g., after lasers, injectables, or peels). "Fragrance is one of those ingredients that can quietly keep the skin inflamed without people realizing it."

Synthetic vs. Natural Fragrance

Some people claim that natural fragrance is less irritating than synthetic fragrances, or vice versa. However, the experts say this is a myth, and they're here to debunk it. "Both natural and synthetic fragrances can irritate the skin, neither is automatically safer," Oska says. "Natural ingredients may seem gentler but often contain complex compounds that can cause reactions or become more irritating over time, while synthetic fragrances can also trigger sensitivity depending on their formulation. Ultimately, irritation depends on the specific ingredients, concentration, and your skin type, so 'fragrance-free' products are usually the safest choice for sensitive skin."

Germano agrees, saying this is something that comes up often in her practice. "This is something I educate my patients on all the time. Natural doesn’t mean better when it comes to fragrance. Both synthetic fragrance and natural fragrance (like essential oils) can be irritating to the skin. In fact, a lot of 'natural' ingredients are actually more reactive. At the end of the day, fragrance is one of the most common causes of irritation I see in practice. It doesn’t add any benefit to the skin; it’s just there for the experience."

Fragrance and Rosacea

As someone who has rosacea, I avoid fragrance wherever I can because it's known to trigger and exacerbate inflammatory skin conditions (eczema, psoriasis, and acne included). Let Oska explain. "Fragrance ingredients can act as irritants, triggering nerve endings in the skin and leading to increased redness, flushing, burning, and stinging, all hallmark symptoms of rosacea," she says. "Because rosacea-prone skin already has a more reactive barrier, it is less able to tolerate these added compounds. Over time, repeated exposure to fragranced products can contribute to more frequent flare-ups. That’s why dermatologists typically recommend sticking with fragrance-free, gentle formulations to help keep inflammation at bay."

Germano has firsthand experience with this as a provider. "I’ve seen patients struggle with persistent redness and sensitivity, and once we strip out fragrance from their routine, their skin becomes much more stable," she says. "Fragrance, whether synthetic or from essential oils, can increase inflammation, trigger flushing, and cause that burning or stinging sensation rosacea patients often describe."

How to Spot Fragrance in an Ingredient List

Avoiding fragrance seems like it would be simple, but it's not. That's because fragrance isn't always listed as such on an ingredient label. "Fragrance isn’t always obvious on an ingredient list, so you have to know what to look for," Oska says. "It’s most commonly listed simply as 'fragrance' or 'parfum,' which are catchall terms that can represent dozens of undisclosed scent chemicals. You might also see 'aroma' or more specific fragrance allergens like limonene, linalool, citronellol, geraniol, and eugenol. These are often derived from essential oils but can still be irritating. Plant extracts and essential oils (like lavender oil or citrus oils) can also function as fragrance, even if they’re not labeled as such."

The fix? Both experts recommend looking for skincare products that are labeled "fragrance-free," but not "unscented." Believe it or not, those terms don't mean the same thing. "One thing I always tell patients: 'Unscented' doesn’t mean fragrance-free," Germano says. "It can still contain masking fragrances. If you’re trying to avoid irritation, you want to specifically look for 'fragrance-free.'"

It's been five years since we last spoke to Lucy Hale about her beauty routine, and I can confirm the actress's skin looks just as clear and glowy as it appeared in 2021. (In fact, I'd even say her complexion has remained virtually unchanged since we were introduced to her as Aria Montgomery during the 2010 pilot of Pretty Little Liars.) Yet as we sit in a dimly lit treatment room at NYC's Sage + Sound, she reveals her skin has experienced quite a few shifts underneath the surface—so much so that she evolved her entire approach.

"In 2021, I was probably still in my 'more is more' phase," she says. After all, it was around this time her Vogue Beauty Secrets video—which showcased a 25-step skin and makeup regimen—went absolutely bananas on the internet. Today, it's safe to say she's cut that routine by more than half. "I'm five years older, so my priorities are a little bit different. I have to approach my skin type differently," she says. These days, hyperpigmentation and fine lines are her main concerns ("It's all happening," she jokes), so a partnership with Shiseido—which just added two new products to its Benefiance brightening and smoothing range—was practically written in the stars. "I have always loved Shiseido's products. To me, it's classic, and the Benefiance line is beautiful," she says. "Once I find a product that I like, I like when it comes in a trio or package because then I know it's going to attack at all angles."

The Benefiance collection does just that, offering a serum, moisturizer, and eye cream with impeccable line-smoothing, dark spot-fading power. The serum and moisturizer also come spiked with picão preto, a plant-derived retinol alternative that's been shown to stimulate collagen levels and smooth wrinkles—and because there's no actual retinol in the formulas, you can use it day and night without any photosensitivity concerns. Of course, Hale still stresses the importance of daily sunscreen, praising Shiseido's Urban Environment line for its sensoriality. "It's so sheer, and you can mix it in your foundation. It's so nice," she says.

From there, her skin must-haves include a gua sha (In the morning, I just need to wake my skin up a little bit," she shares) and an LED mask from Jovs. "LED light really does wonders for my skin," she adds.

Her makeup routine follows a similar "less is more" M.O. Don't get me wrong, Hale still loves to accentuate her wide, hazel-green eyes, but she'd rather strategically enhance them with shadow than globs of mascara and eyeliner. "I'm really into the no-mascara [look]. Somehow that almost makes my eyes pop more," she tells me. "Sometimes I'll put clear brow gel on my lashes just so they fan out, but it doesn't give them any more pigment." Charlotte Tilbury's Brow Fix is the MVP, as it boasts a clump-free formula and small, precise brush.

The go-to technique seems rather at odds with Aria Montgomery, particularly her daytime smokey eye that populated beauty mood boards in the 2010s. "In 2016, I was loading up on mascara. I loved an eyeliner," Hale reflects on her Pretty Little Liars days. "I don't think I even own an eyeliner anymore." Today, she'd much rather define her orbs with a soft shadow—namely Charlotte Tilbury's Filmstar Bronze & Glow Contour Duo, which she applies along her lash line for some subtle dimension. "It pops the green [in my eyes]," she notes.

Don't think that means Hale shies away from the occasional bold glam; she did sport rose gold locks back in 2018, after all. "I love a dramatic haircut. I'm growing out my hair right now, but me at prime Lucy is a blunt, short bob," she says. "I feel like I try to change it up with every acting gig I have." Of course, I have to ask her if we can expect a big chop—or any other beauty experiment—for spring and summer. "No big surprises yet," she smiles. "But if I told you, it wouldn't be a surprise." Who knows? In another five years, we might look back on this conversation as the impetus for Hale's next beauty era.

Find yourself among beauty circles, and there's a 99% chance you'll hear Sofie Pavitt come up in conversation. The aesthetician, who's widely known as NYC's "acne whisperer," is the ultimate expert for breakout-prone skin, having transformed a slew of complexions—including celebrities and countless beauty editors—from her downtown studio. (I practically begged to see her right before my wedding, if that tells you anything about her skin-clearing magic.)

She and her eponymous brand are often hot topics at the Who What Wear office, mainly because of her famous Mandelic Clearing Serum. Almost every single one of my coworkers has asked me whether it's worth the hype, to which I proudly say: Yes, yes it is. Recently, however, I've been fielding questions left and right about another soon-to-be-launched Sofie Pavitt Face product—one I truly can't shut up about since getting my hands on an early sample months ago. "Is it good?" one editor asked me as soon as I sat down at my desk. "Should I buy it?" another joined in.

My response? "Guys, it might be my favorite product of the whole line." Soon, multiple staffers announced their plans to add it to their carts, all before I poured my first cup of coffee. I suggest you do the same before it flies out of stock. Trust me—this one's a winner.

Here she is! Introducing Pavitt's Skin Jelly Oil-Free Gel Moisturizer, a lightweight hydrator with a bouncy, gelatinous feel. Like its name suggests, there's zero oil in the formula—a great addition to your routine as we head into summer—and, as a bonus, actually helps balance oil production thanks to zinc and copper PCA. That said, if your skin leans drier, don't fret; the moisturizer also comes infused with beta-glucan and panthenol to hydrate and soothe the skin, along with allantoin and centella asiatica to help soothe redness and inflammation.

I personally have combination skin that's also breakout-prone and a little sensitive (such a fun combo, I know) so this is literally the perfect formula to target all my needs. Not to mention it wears incredibly well underneath makeup. The jelly consistency is a bit primer-like, in my opinion, and it clings to foundation and concealer flawlessly. No pilling whatsoever.

It doesn't have a glowy finish, if that's something you typically look for in moisturizers, but don't think that means it isn't hydrating. It's not like traditional mattifying moisturizers, which often have a tacky effect on the skin. It glides like a dream, and I can actually feel its soothing, plumping effects with each application. My complexion still appears hydrated, just not greasy—a balance that's very, very difficult to strike. It's definitely a departure from the brand's Omega Rich Moisturizer, which has a dense texture and dewy dry-down. Both are noncomedogenic (would you expect anything less from the acne whisperer?), but the jelly version will suit folks who are looking for something a little less thick. As Pavitt herself said during a brand presentation, this is a "moisturizer for people who hate moisturizers."

If your skin runs super oily, Pavitt says you could use her Screentime SPF 30 as your sole moisturizer (it's super creamy and hydrating), and apply Skin Jelly at night. That said, layering both during the day hasn't caused any problems for my combination, breakout-prone skin. For two months, I've been applying Skin Jelly every single morning after the Mandelic Clearing Serum—a product I restock time and again despite having access to practically every beauty product under the sun. I can already tell this Skin Jelly moisturizer will also fall into that camp, and as much as I want to gatekeep its sorcery, I won't rest until every beauty fan I know has tried it for themselves.

Davis-Woodhall takes her seat in a sun-soaked New York City penthouse to chat with Who What Wear about the newest notch in her decorated belt of life, marriage, and Olympic training: the Unstoppable Together skincare campaign with Clinique, in which she stars alongside her high school sweetheart turned husband. The Olympic gold–winning pair met at a high school track-and-field meet in Idaho, where Davis-Woodhall made the first move. “I stepped onto the track and said, 'I don’t know why I have to do this, but I have to give you a hug,'" she reminisced in a 2024 interview with Town & Country. According to Woodhall, the sparks flew from before that interaction at all—having stated in a 2019 YouTube video that he thought to himself, “I’m going to marry that girl,” after watching her compete earlier that day.

The two took the 2024 Paris Olympics by storm, Davis-Woodhall having secured the gold medal for Team USA in the women’s long jump while Woodhall scored the gold for the 2024 Paralympic Games just weeks later in the men’s 400-meter race. However, their buzz didn’t fade once they touched back down on American soil, for videos of their sweet celebration following Davis-Woodhall’s gold-winning performance—where Tara jumped headlong into Hunter’s arms in the stands—amassed millions of views across TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube after the moment earned countless reposts and fan edits. That through line of uniformity stretches to other areas of the athlete’s life, too, describing herself as “very organized”—something we’d assume you have to be when juggling a training schedule to defend your gold medal in two years (which she very much plans on doing) and several new business opportunities. Skincare, therapy, and relationships with friends and family have always been at the forefront for the athlete, and she stresses the importance of keeping self-care in the mix—specifically where it concerns her skin. “As an athlete, I sweat so much, and I just want to make sure my skin is pristine,” she says with a laugh.

Though skincare and toothpaste are church and state in the Woodhall household, Tara describes their relationship as one fused unit—both on the track and at home. “My competitions, he's usually running errands for me… trying to make sure I'm well and able and okay,” she explains. “He gets my breakfast. He gets my coffee. It’s so nice—he’s so nice,” she adds, a smile blooming over her face.

This campaign feels especially sweet for the long jump star, not just because it includes her husband as well, but because of the small role Clinique played in her childhood. “I grew up sneaking my mom's Clinique moisturizer,” she says mischievously. These full-circle moments hit close to home, and they won’t slow soon as the 2028 L.A. Olympics inch closer every day—which will be on home turf for the Agoura Hills, California–raised athlete.

Davis-Woodhall is “absolutely so stoked” about the next summer Olympics being in her backyard, especially after the impressive turnout of Team USA fans in Paris. “I am so excited for everyone [in the crowd] to be a fan—it’s gonna be so fun,” she shares. The rest of her community echoes this statement—or at least, they’ve already expressed it to her. “My family and friends are already talking about where they're gonna stay and what they're doing,” she says with a laugh. “I was like, ‘Guys, we have two years. Hold on. Let me get there first.’”

These upcoming Olympic Games mean the world to her, not only because this is the first event on U.S. soil since 2002’s Salt Lake City Games, but because these might be her last. “To be coming home to defend my title, but then to be the last hurrah of my career… It's so special and so meaningful, and I'm definitely not going to take this one for granted,” she admits.

“Last hurrah?” we ask. She erupts in a flurry of “Ahh, I think!” and “Maybe!” Davis-Woodhall explains that it’s the current plan—that it feels like a chapter closing on a bittersweet yet timely note. “Track and field is everything, but it can't be everything,” she tells us. “I want to see what life is like without having to train every single day.”

We, for one, can’t wait to watch the Olympian duo defend their golds and top-shelf titles—glowing skin and all.

"From our mid-20s onwards, collagen production naturally declines by about 1-1.5% per year, and existing collagen becomes more fragmented. It's been three years since I made a startling discovery that reframed how I went about choosing products to test as a beauty editor: aloe vera causes my skin to go into distress. My Skin Before

How I Tested

"Oil-free moisturizers are particularly helpful for oily, acne-prone, and combination skin types," says Kseniya Kobets, MD, board-certified dermatologist and director of cosmetic dermatology at Montefiore Einstein. "Not because all oils are inherently bad, but because in certain patients they can contribute to congestion, and [they] can also cause sensitivity in skin-barrier disruption associated with acne-prone skin." In short, these formulations shouldn't be drying or barely there. They should calm and quench the skin, be fast-absorbing, and multitask to boost consistency of use.

What to Look for in an Oil-Free Moisturizer

• Skin type: Before selecting your moisturizer of choice, you'll need to identify your skin type. If you're unsure whether you lean oily, combination, dry, or normal, be sure to speak with your dermatologist to get a better understanding of your skin's landscape. It's important to also take into account whether you have acne-prone, sensitive, or mature skin while you discern which formula is right for you.
• Ingredients: Since these formulas forego the use of oils, the included ingredients need to step it up to deliver the proper amount of hydration and nourishment. "Ingredients like hyaluronic acid and glycerin are great because they draw water into the skin to keep it hydrated without contributing to breakouts," says Saedi. She also looks for soothing niacinamide, and Kobets adds peptides and antioxidants to the list.

Which oil-free moisturizers prevent acne and help with acne scarring?

We've discussed oil-free moisturizers for acne-prone skin, but can any actually help fight scarring or prevent blemishes from popping up at all? Derms say yes. "One of the biggest mistakes I see is patients skipping moisturizer because they're acne-prone," says Kobets. "When the barrier is compromised, inflammation increases, and oil production can become more reactive. Balanced hydration is not optional—it's therapeutic."

For acne prevention, the dermatologist recommends formulas with ceramides ("which are often lacking in acne-prone skin") and niacinamide, which controls oil production and soothes inflamed skin. Humectants like glycerin and hyaluronic acid are hydrating essentials that she also looks for, and the cherry on top is salicylic acid. She says some formulations include the latter at a low dosage to decongest pores.

To rehabilitate skin with acne scarring, Kobets says that the first step is to protect and repair the skin barrier, training it to heal more efficiently in the future. "That is accomplished by including basic ingredients like ceramides, glycerin, hyaluronic acid, and niacinamide," she explains. Once the barrier is restored, she wants patients to continue using those ingredients while slowly introducing vitamin C, azelaic acid, and antioxidants into their routines to counteract discoloration.

Collagen is another factor that prevents the formation of acne scars and wrinkles, and Kobets says peptides and antioxidants are essential here. "They help reduce oxidative stress and support dermal matrix health," she explains. Most importantly, Kobets wants you to wear sunscreen to prevent any more scarring, specifically a "nonirritating, preferably mineral SPF 30–50 every day and smart sun protection," she notes.

I have to be honest. It's been a long time since I've been enamoured by a moisturiser. Having oily skin means most traditional cream formulas are just too heavy on my complexion. Especially if I'm planning on wearing a foundation or skin tint on top.

You'd think that, being in my line of work as a beauty journalist, I'd be spoiled for choice for options in our beauty cupboard, but it's rare to find a moisturiser that suits my finicky skin. I want something that sinks in immediately, blurs over my pores and keeps my complexion looking dewy as opposed to shiny.

So when I was invited to Paris for a secret briefing of Garnier's new launches, I didn't know I was about to discover a new moisturiser favourite. I've had to keep it a secret for a couple of months, but now I'm pleased to be able to share that the Garnier Vitamin C Fresh & Bright Hydrating Sorbet Cream (£7.50) has become a firm favourite in my skincare routine.

The Texture

The texture is what makes this standout moisturiser so spectacular. In fact, it rivals even some of the more expensive counterparts I've tried. It has a sorbet-like, gel consistency, which melts on contact with the warmth of your skin. It's unlike anything else I've tried, and it is instantly cooling, melting to a waterlike texture that absorbs immediately.

There's no greasy finish, either. Instead, your skin feels deeply hydrated whilst giving a slightly mattifying finish; something my oily skin very much appreciates. And because it blurs my pores, it's become my go-to moisturiser to use underneath makeup to achieve a more uniform finish.

I'm planning on keeping this in my fridge come summer to boost the cooling effects even more during warm weather. I know I'll be leaning on this moisturiser all through the hotter months when my oily skin often goes into overdrive.

The Formula

I've sung the praises of the sorbet texture, but it would be remiss of me not mention formula, as the skincare ingredients in this are brilliant, too. It uses a vitamin C derivative from corn and wheat (a more sustainable source compared to other vitamin C types) to brighten the skin, alongside niacinamide, which is great for improving skin texture and reducing the appearance of pores. Again, great for oily or combination skin.

It also has the most incredible citrus scent. It smells just like lemon sorbet, which is actually a very welcome sensorial moment on these dark winter mornings to awaken the senses.

The Verdict

For the price, I'm seriously impressed with this moisturiser. The texture is not only fun, but genuinely effective at mattifying, helping my skin stay hydrated but never shiny.

It's so lightweight, so if you're not one for heavier moisturisers, you'll no doubt love the water-like texture that sinks in mere seconds. I can apply my SPF and base makeup straight away without any piling. As you can see in my photo above, my makeup has applied well over the top, and it helps to keep me shine-free throughout the day. Knowing it has brightening and skin-smoothing ingredients makes it a welcome addition to my skincare routine right now.

Peek into the bathroom cabinets of the most in-the-know beauty fans, and nine times out of 10 you'll see it: an iconic red glass jar glinting against the sea of minimalist-chic staples. So ubiquitous that it's widely referred to as "The Red Jar," this confection is lauded for firming skin, repairing cellular damage, and even reversing wrinkles—all for a cool $24. Drugstore heroes can work just as well (if not better) than luxury options, but this cream is the perfect example of a wallet-friendly workhorse that makes an incredible impact. "My aunt who's in her 70s has beautiful skin. I think she's had Botox here and there when she lived in a bigger city, but I noticed she's always had [it] in her bathroom," one Reddit user writes, while another gushes: "My go to cream. In case you haven't yet guessed, the miracle moisturizer in question is Olay's Regenerist Micro-Sculpting Cream, a cult-favorite across ages that actually just announced a 2026 upgrade. Product loyalists might be hesitant to try the new reformulation and stockpile all the old jars while they still can (been there), but after personally testing the launch since November—and even enlisting my 56-year-old mom to help weigh in—I can confirm that this new formula boosts the benefits tenfold. Scroll ahead for my honest takes, plus all the updated info you need.

While anyone can reap the hydrating benefits of the Regenerist cream, the formula is best suited for those with aging concerns—that is, fine lines, sagging, and fragile, crepey skin. It features niacinamide and pro-vitamin B5 (or panthenol) to strengthen the skin barrier, smooth texture, and plump the surface with hydration, but now, it has a proprietary blend of three collagen peptides (Pal-KTTKS, AT-peptide, and Pal-KT, to be specific) that repairs weakened cellular bonds within the skin, thus keeping the structure firm and taut.

"Pal-KTTKS penetrates 10 layers deep to visibly improve firmness and signs of collagen loss," board-certified dermatologist Jenny Liu, MD, FAAD, expands on those special peptides. "AT-Peptide helps enhance cellular energy, [and] Pal-KT is known to boost the skin’s antioxidant response. When used together, they reinforce the skin’s natural barrier and structure, essentially tightening the 'mesh' of the skin, so it looks smoother and more sculpted."

They also result in an immediate tightening effect (my mom and I both experienced instant smoothness), but those benefits become more noticeable the longer you use it. "By day 28, you’ll see visibly lifted, sculpted skin with a reduction of deep wrinkles," Liu says, who recommends using it day and night for optimal results.

In terms of the texture (because sensoriality is important to consider too!), the creamy confection melts upon application, never leaving behind a greasy film. It's silky yet rich, which makes it perfect for both day and nighttime applications—dense enough to deeply moisturize for eight-some hours, yet light enough to sit evenly underneath sunscreen and makeup. "It doesn't feel sticky after," my mom agrees, also praising its very subtle aroma. "I'm not a big [scent] person, and it’s not a harsh smell." I also prefer fragrance-free skincare products whenever possible, but I too find the Olay fragrance not too overwhelming—just a hint of freshness. Still, I'll probably opt for the unscented version once I'm done with this jar.

Now, I'd be remiss to mention the onslaught of peptide-infused skincare products on the market, some of which cost upwards of $300. When you see the Regenerist Micro-Sculpting Cream tagged under $25, it's natural to wonder whether a budget-friendly item can truly measure up. To which I repeat: Drugstore formulas can be just as sophisticated as their spendy counterparts.

"There is a common misconception that a higher price tag equals a more effective formula, but that simply isn't true in skin care," Liu adds. "I often tell my patients that efficacy comes down to formulation and R&D." Olay has over 50 years of dedicated peptide research under its belt, so you can rest assured that the brand doesn't just toss in a generic peptide blend for marketing purposes and call it a day. No, these are clinically-backed, highly-engineered, and—most importantly—stable actives shown to tackle the specific structural changes in aging skin.

What Is a Milky Moisturiser?

“A ‘milky moisturiser’ is a moisturiser with a creamy but lightweight texture that resembles milk in appearance,” says Dr Phillips. “These products do not actually contain milk or dairy, the term simply reflects how they look and feel on the skin. The milky quality comes from emulsifying oil and water-based ingredients to create a fluid, lotion-like consistency. They absorb easily and deliver hydration and comfort without the heaviness of a traditional cream.”

What Are the Benefits of Using a Milky Moisturiser?

"A milky moisturiser provides lightweight hydration,” Dr Phillips explains, “and is also soothing and calming, making it good for most skin types, including sensitive skin. They’re also usually noncomedogenic, which means that they absorb easily into the skin without clogging pores.”

In terms of formulation, “Milky moisturisers typically contain ingredients like ceramides and lipids that help to strengthen the skin barrier and prevent moisture loss, protecting against seasonal environmental factors such as central heating and cold, dry weather. They also often contain fatty acids and proteins that help to hydrate and nourish the skin, something which is particularly pertinent during the winter season to keep the skin soft and supple."

How Does a Milky Moisturiser Differ From a Milky Toner?

"‘A milky moisturiser is usually thicker and creamier than a milky toner, and is designed to provide hydration and lock in moisture. As a result, milky moisturisers are usually richer in formulation and contain more emollients and occlusives to support the skin’s moisture barrier,” says Dr Phillips.

Yet while the formulas are different, “you don’t need to choose between them as they can be used together. A milky toner can be a great hydrating step after cleansing, while a milky moisturiser seals everything in. It simply comes down to how much hydration your skin needs and your preferred texture."

In the beauty space, skincare can often be the most confusing for many. Even as a beauty editor, it's hard for me to sift through the conflicting advice you can see flying around. Couple it with skincare trends and new beauty products cropping up every single day, and it can be all too easy to be derailed into a skincare routine that A) doesn't work for you, and B) can compromise your skin barrier. And no one wants that.

If there's one takeaway I always get from speaking to skincare experts and dermatologists as part of my job, it's that having a consistent skincare routine order is key. I know, it sounds a bit boring. But when it comes to our skin, it likes routine. And consistently using the same products, from your cleanser down to your SPF, can do wonders for your complexion. But, it's also important that we have our skincare routine order nailed, too. After all, there's no point in having a bathroom shelf full of serums and toners if we're not using them all correctly.

To clear things up, I asked Eleanor Hartley, founder and medical director of Hart Medical, to talk us through everything we should know about our skincare routine order, including your morning and evening skincare routine. Whether you're new to creating a skincare routine or a skincare devotee looking for a reset, here's how to perfect your skincare routine order.

Why Is A Skincare Routine Important?

"One of the things I always iterate to patients and clients is the importance of consistency. The routine itself I care less about. Whether it’s two or twenty steps, just that you are consistent," says Hartley. "If you chop and change products too much, you’ll never end up seeing the benefits of each ingredient, and your skin is perpetually trying to adjust to different things," she says.

"A consistent skincare routine supports the skin’s barrier function, which is its primary defense against environmental stressors, pathogens and transepidermal water loss," she adds. "When the barrier is intact, inflammation, dehydration and premature ageing are reduced. A structured regimen also allows for targeted treatment, maintains skin homeostasis, optimises cell turnover and preserves long-term skin health," she says.

So, if you're wondering how to structure your skincare routine order, scroll ahead for everything you need to know.

Skincare Routine Order

Morning Skincare Routine

1. Cleanser

Cleansing with a face wash is the first step of your routine. "If you don’t have sebaceous or oily skin, I usually recommend skipping a morning cleanse as it can unnecessarily strip the skin. If you are more oily, then a gentle cleanse with an unfragranced cleanser with minimal acids is appropriate for the morning," says Hartley. "I recommend a spritz with a hypochlorous spray (like Clinisoothe Skin Purifier, £15), which is antibacterial and will reset your skin's pH for optimal penetration of skincare," she says.

2. Toner

This step isn't essential, but a toner can be helpful after cleansing and before using your serums. "I find that most people don’t actually know why they are toning," says Hartley. "Toners help to reestablish the skin's pH (4.5-5.5) after washing with water (7.5-8.5). This helps to prep the skin for actives and optimise penetration," she says.

For congested and acne-prone skin types, a toner with salicylic acid can help to unclog pores and can be applied by sweeping it over your skin with a cotton round. Dry skin types may prefer a milky toner, which helps to add more moisture while balancing the skin pH.

3. Serums and Actives

Next in your routine are serums, which are the powerhouse of your skincare routine and are the key step to treating your specific skincare concerns.

"Here, you can apply serums containing antioxidants, humectants or exfoliating acids," says Hartley. "A simple rule is to apply products from the thinnest to to thickest consistency, allowing each layer to penetrate effectively without obstruction," she says. "This sometimes means waiting for a product to penetrate before applying the next layer."

A vitamin C serum is a great ingredient to apply to your skin in your morning routine. "The morning non-negotiable is your antioxidant serum. This will protect the skin from environmental damage," says Hartley. Another good all-rounder is a hyaluronic acid serum, which will help to hydrate and plump the skin.

4. Eye Cream

Whether you use an eye cream really comes down to personal preference. For example, you may prefer to take your hyaluronic acid serum up to your eye area and forgo eye cream altogether. Or, you may prefer some additional hydration and benefits that an eye cream can bring to the eye area, particularly for dark circles or puffiness. If you want to use an eye cream, make sure to apply it before your moisturiser, helping the ingredients to absorb effectively.

5. Mosturiser

Next up is your moisturiser. "To hydrate and protect the skin, you can seal in moisture with a suitable emollient or occlusive," says Hartley.

Dry skin types can benefit from a moisturiser for dry skin, which is generally more creamy and heavier in texture, while those with combination and oily skin may prefer a gel moisturiser that is lighter and more mattifying. That being said, if you feel like your skin doesn't need moisturiser, you can skip moisturiser and use your SPF instead if you find it hydrating enough.

6. SPF

The last step of your morning routine should be your SPF. And this step is a non-negotiable. "SPF is the most critical step for preventing photo-ageing and oxidative stress," says Hartley. Ideally, you want to look for a broad-spectrum formula with an SPF of at least 30 or 50.

As mentioned, you can always skip your moisturiser and go straight in with an SPF after your serums if you find moisturiser and SPF too heavy together. Evening Skincare Routine

1. Makeup Remover

If you've been wearing makeup throughout the day, then this step is really important to thoroughly remove it and prevent breakouts. Cleansing balms and cleansing oils are ideal for removing heavier makeup like foundation. However, a classic micellar water will also do the job.

"The evening cleanse is important, removing makeup, impurities and the sebum buildup for the day," says Hartley. "Double cleansing or pre-cleansing with an oil isn’t necessary, but if it helps to remove makeup, that’s fine," she says. "I prefer an unperfumed micellar water for removing stubborn makeup, followed by a cleanse with gentle acids depending on your skin type to exfoliate the outer layer and break down oil in the pores."

2. Cleanser

If you're wearing light makeup (such as a skin tint or tinted SPF), you may find this step is enough to remove it. And you've forgone makeup altogether, you can go straight in with your cleanser to remove any impurities. The formulation should come down to your preferences and skincare concerns, but a gently foaming cleanser or milky cleanser is ideal to remove any excess buildup.

3. Toner

Like in your morning routine, this step isn't essential. But it can be helpful to use this as an opportunity to exfoliate with acids, or to add a layer of hydration prior to your evening serums. You can also use a hypochlorous spray at this stage if you prefer.

4. Serum and Actives

Next, you can apply your serums. While your morning serum should ideally be an antioxidant, for the evening, a retinol serum or peptide serum is a good choice to address fine lines and pigmentation.

"Apply your actives directly on cleansed (or toned) skin for optimal penetration," says Hartley. "All clinical testing of active ingredients is directly on skin ,meaning you won’t get the intended results if you layer other products first. So if you have multiple actives or serums, start in order or your key priority," she says.

5. Eye Cream

Much like your morning skincare routine, an eye cream isn't an essential, but can be helpful if you want to directly target eye concerns like wrinkles, dark circles and puffiness. Be sure to apply it before your moisturiser—not after—to ensure the ingredients absorb properly, rather than sitting on top of your night cream or moisturiser.

6. Moisturiser

"To finish your nighttime skincare routine, you can lock in your products with a light moisturiser," says Hartley. You don't have to buy a separate night cream (your usual daytime moisturiser is usually just fine); however, it can be helpful to have a more nourishing formula alongside a lightweight moisturiser to see your skin through changes in the environment and the seasons.

Admittedly, I didn't know what I should expect from the moisturizer that so many dermatologists have recommended for reviving my desert-dry skin. However, my eyes did linger for a while on the use of 2:4:2 in the product's name, which I would later learn is referencing its ingredient ratio. Testing the Moisturizer Cream

The difference in how my complexion looked and felt before and after using the moisturizer was evident within minutes of warming and melting the small amount of product to my skin in circular motions beginning with my forehead and working outward. I have the kind of skin that might be a beauty editor’s worst nightmare and an inquisitive reader’s dream. Perennially dry (yes, even in the summer), red thanks to rosacea, and sensitive to oil, heavy fragrance, and most common irritants. Basically, my skin is out to get me in this product-testing-heavy role, which means that when something passes my skin test, you’ll know it’s likely safe enough to use yourself.

Now, I won’t pretend to be a dermatologist. You should always consult with your doctor before trying a new product that aims to change your skin landscape, especially something that includes retinol (or something like it, in the case of this latest launch from an editor-adored French pharmacy brand). That said, Embryolisse’s Lait-Crème Rétinol-Like is a sensitive skin–safe moisturizer that promises the same skin-smoothing results as your favorite retinol cream, just with a plant-based alternative that spares the harshness this vitamin A derivative often inflicts upon irritable skin.

Though retinol has been a buzzword for several years at this point, I’ve been hesitant to add the resurfacing agent into my skincare routine for a few reasons. My skin is already dry, so I don’t need to endure the peeling phase that ensues after implementing a retinol product. I’m only 25, so I don’t exactly have wrinkles that I want to target (yet). And most importantly, I prefer to keep my skincare routine simple: face cleanser, serum (only if I need it), moisturizer, and sunscreen in the daytime, so I don’t want to bulk up my routine.

I didn’t expect myself to fall for this moisturizer as much as I did, but, man, do I understand now why the French love this pharmacy brand so much.

About the Embryolisse Lait-Crème Retinol-Like

Though I’ve referenced this product as a retinol cream several times, it’s much more than that. In addition to being an anti-aging moisturizer, this thick, smoothing formula moonlights as a makeup primer, hydrating mask, restorative night cream, and nourishing body milk. While I didn’t give it a proper weeklong trial as a body treatment (I’ve been living for a specific luxury and drugstore bodycare duo these days), its thick formula is certainly nourishing enough to work as a restorative post-shower treatment. (Plus, its relatively large tube size makes it easier to justify using on both your face and body.)

While this cream can seemingly do it all—keep your makeup in place during the daytime, restore your skin with renewed radiance overnight—the ingredient we can attribute most of the formula’s success to is a plant-based retinol alternative called French big clover. It's known as Grand Trèfle by the French, and the extract of this plant is rich in thickening agents called Galactomannans, which stimulate the production of collagen (plumping wrinkles in the process), while smoothing and soothing the skin barrier.

The benefits of this plant can be compared to retinol, or more broadly, retinoids, in a few ways. “Retinoids are a powerhouse ingredient from the vitamin A family and are known for transforming the skin,” Mona Gohara, MD, an associate clinical professor of dermatology at the Yale School of Medicine, previously told Who What Wear. “They work by revving up skin cell turnover by shedding dead skin cells so new, healthy ones can come to the surface.” Much like retinol, French big clover revitalizes the skin by increasing cell turnover and acting as a soothing sealant for the fresh complexion below—aided by other nourishing, protective ingredients such as organic aloe vera, carnauba wax, and shea butter.

The Testing Process

As a 25-year-old with no major skin concerns at the moment, I might not have the same experience with this product as someone with more mature, acne-prone, or sensitive skin. Users with wrinkles may reap more of the benefits than I, as I primarily use this formula for a preventative measure. That said, I did notice a change in my skin after just one week of use.

The instructions indicate that you can use this product morning and night, but erring on the side of caution, I used the cream once daily, usually as the last step in my nighttime skincare routine. Just a few dollops on my skin were enough to make it feel thoroughly moisturized, so much so that my skin felt tacky if I accidentally applied too much. Fortunately, my slightly heavy-handedness graced me with supple, glowing skin in the morning.

I first experienced the common reaction that most have when they start using retinol: peeling, dry skin, as my dermis began to shed itself. This happened mostly around my mouth, coupled with a bit of redness on my cheeks and jawline that you can see in my “before” photo above. That said, this wasn’t for lack of moisture—as the formula felt thick enough to be a mask—so these spots slowly disappeared to reveal healthy, hydrated skin by the end of the week.

While I’m not the intended recipient of this product’s hero benefit, wrinkle reduction, I did a bit of snooping around to see what people with more mature skin than I experienced with this formula. “This product has made my face look years younger in just a few weeks using it as a night cream,” says an Amazon shopper in their five-star review. “I’m [in my] mid-60s with modest creases on my forehead, and somehow this is helping to reduce those creases to almost nothing. I wish I had discovered it years ago.”

Final Thoughts

Overall, I’d recommend this product to anyone who wants to boost their skin’s elasticity, collagen, and hydration levels—especially if they have sensitive skin and react negatively to retinol or other retinoids (think retinyl, retinal, and tretinoin).

It has a thick consistency that feels a bit too heavy under makeup on hot summer days, but I can see it being a great, hydrating primer during the cooler months thanks to its slightly tacky texture. Because it has a thicker feel, I recommend using a thin layer as an overnight mask two to three times a week to get the most benefits any time of year (and for this reason, it makes a great body lotion, too).

What Is a Retinol Alternative?

Retinol alternatives are largely utilized by users with sensitive skin who react negatively to the strong resurfacing agents within most retinol products. Board-certified dermatologist Stacey Tull, MD, previously told Who What Wear that retinol irritation can be exacerbated in even those with “normal” skin types during the winter months, so retinol alternatives are a better, gentler option for healthy skin stimulation in this case. She also explains that because some people have very sensitive skin, retinol alternatives may be “as good as or better than the real thing.”

Common alternatives include bakuchiol, a natural antioxidant that has been found to balance skin texture while diffusing fine lines and wrinkles, alfalfa, which is a more widely recognized name for French big clover, and niacinamide, which Tull says can “boost collagen, target acne, and address skin discoloration.”

Cosmetic and Mohs skin cancer surgeon Sheila Farhang, MD, also vouches for its sensitive- and mature-skin compatibility thanks to a bed of barrier-strengthening ingredients. “Because it’s formulated with hyaluronic acid, a humectant that draws in moisture, it helps plump the skin, which is especially helpful for aging or mature skin,” Farhang explains.

Both experts lauded this watery formula for its quick absorption, making it easy to layer under makeup and SPF—a quality I’ve been looking for in my recent skincare acquisitions. But Anay Kacharia, a cosmetic chemist, says there’s much more to this drugstore product than your typical moisturizer.

The Testing Process

Now, I won’t lie to you and tell you I’ve been wearing this product religiously—I’m a beauty editor with dozens of things to test per week, after all. But I can say that I used this moisturizer day and night for a week, and there are several reasons it’s earning a spot in my prestige brand–stacked medicine cabinet far past the testing period.

Things I Loved

Too many steps in my skin regimen usually causes my makeup to pill, but that was certainly not the case with the Hydro Boost. This refreshing, light-blue tincture left my skin feeling instantly soothed, but what shocked me more than its spa-towel coolness was how quickly the formula sank into my skin—becoming virtually undetectable in less than a minute.

Things I Didn't Love

TBH, there’s not much I didn’t care for after testing this product for a week. My skin felt hydrated and supple—my often dull-looking complexion coming alive with a juicy glow. But while this product does offer a cooling whoosh of hydration, it’s more of a short-term solution rather than a longer one, and you may want to try something richer if you have very dry skin.

In the same vein, I adore this formula for a lightweight summer moisturizer (read: non-sticky, never balmy, and airy enough to let my skin breathe in humid weather), but I would reach for something more substantial in the winter to deal with my temperamental, very dry winter skin.

All in all, the Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Gel is a great option for anyone who’s looking for a budget-friendly, lightweight moisturizer that delivers on hydration and plays well with other products. I’d suggest using this as a base for your thicker moisturizer in the wintertime. Though, it’s a great everyday option for warm-weather climates and summertime.

Salma Hayek Pinault's daily skincare routine is refreshingly bare bones. No retinol, no exfoliating peels, and absolutely no injectables. She doesn't even commit to a morning face wash—a tip she learned from her grandmother. "Your skin doesn't get dirty while you're sleeping," the award-winning actress and producer quips over Zoom.

That doesn't mean she's against the occasional in-office procedure: "I have been using radiofrequency for years. That is the only thing I did," she adds. Her biggest at-home tip for youthful skin, however, is sleep—and lots of it. "I really wish that when I was younger I had learned good sleeping habits," she says. "I think I always had good skincare discipline [because] my grandmother was so obsessed with it, and it was part of our bonding. She taught me a lot of things… I never go to sleep without taking my makeup off. Never. [But] I have a lot of lifestyle things that I wish I could do better." Okay, I'm aware that Ole Henriksen is far from an underrated brand. Most of its offerings go viral on TikTok—ahem, Pout Preserve—often selling out from all the (well-deserved) hype. That said, I don't know why it took me so long to try this peptide-infused moisturizer, which was originally launched in 2022. Let me tell you, I'm so glad I finally did.

Allow me to wax poetic about its ingredient list for just a moment. With players like ceramides, amino acids, fatty acids, peptides, collagen, hyaluronic acid, panthenol, niacinamide, and vitamin B12, it noticeably plumps the skin with moisture that lasts all day long. These ingredients—namely, the fatty acids, peptides, amino acids, and ceramides—also help strengthen your moisture barrier, which is responsible for keeping all that precious hydration locked inside (and the bad guys out).

The stronger your moisture barrier, the better your skin is able to handle stressors, like brutal winds and frigid air. Since incorporating Strength Trainer into my routine, my skin has become way less reactive (aka red and inflamed). Instead of itching and flaking, I'm met with a noticeable, dewy glow; someone once even asked me if I was wearing foundation when I didn't have a stitch of makeup on. That's when you know!

The texture is also delightfully unexpected. Most barrier balms I test are thick and ointment-like, which makes me less inclined to wear them during the day, even if my skin is practically screaming for the extra layer of protection. What Is Tretinoin?

Board-certified dermatologist Brendan Camp, MD, gave us the rundown on tretinoin. "Tretinoin is a topical retinoid medication," he says. "While it's first and foremost an acne medication, tretinoin is also used for treating the effects of photoaging, namely fine lines, wrinkles, and dark spots. Tretinoin can increase collagen production over time when used regularly. It also helps normalize skin cell turnover to address texture changes and prevent the formation of blackheads and whiteheads."

Tretinoin vs. Retinol

There's a difference between regular retinol and tretinoin, according to board-certified dermatologist and Maei MD founder Rebecca Marcus, MD. "Retinol must be converted to retinoic acid to have an effect as opposed to [tretinoin, which is] prescription-strength and exists as retinoic acid [already]," Marcus explains. "Since retinols need to be converted to retinoic acid, they can take longer to have an effect but are often less irritating on the skin. This can make them a little more tolerable than a prescription alternative."

How does tretinoin benefit the skin?

When used correctly, tretinoin can help with everything from uneven texture to acne, fine lines, and dark spots. Those with dry skin, however, might tolerate lotion formulas of tretinoin, such as the prescription brands Altreno and Arazlo, Marcus says. She also suggests slowly working your way up to daily use when using any form of retinoid.

How to Use Tretinoin

"Using tretinoin two or three nights a week is a good idea. Then work up to nightly applications as your skin gets used to it," she says. "Tretinoins—and, in fact, all retinoids—make skin more sun sensitive, so it's more important than ever to remember your daily sunscreen. Retinoids should not be used by pregnant people. They should be applied at night, not during the day, as they are not photostable and therefore their efficacy is decreased by UV rays."
