Less than three hours from New York City, in Pennsylvania’s Oley Valley, is Bloom Farm—a sought-after destination for wellness practitioners, sustainability-focused brands, and artists of all kinds. I first heard of this regenerative property a few years ago through my best friend, a longtime photography collaborator of theirs, who has always spoken fondly of it as a truly special place.

Founded in 2023, the 60 acres of preserved land are rooted in biodiverse practices and designed for slowing down. The grounds feature a pond, animals, gardens, and trails—ideal for a grounding retreat in nature. They even have an artist-in-residency program for creatives of all disciplines, from music to writing. The food is all locally sourced, and guests can participate in offerings such as yoga, meditation, and breathwork while staying in the farmhouse or one of the cottages.

I already knew that Citizens of Humanity hosted a two-night summit there in 2024, so it felt full circle when I found out the denim brand just released a collection with Moda Operandi titled Bloom, inspired by that same visit. "The capsule grew organically after the Citizens team invited me to stay at Bloom Farm,” says Tatiana Hambro, Moda Operandi’s editor at large. “It was far from your average brand trip—ask anyone there. I left deeply inspired by Citizens’ regenerative cotton program. Not to mention Bloom Farm itself, which is a uniquely special place. No one needs convincing that Citizens’ jeans are great from a style perspective, but it felt like there was another important—and hopefully inspiring—story to tell. Though the pieces, like dungarees and placemats for casual family dining, come inspired by the farm, the idea is they easily translate to stylish everyday living—no matter where you are. In that sense, you can take some of the magic of Bloom Farm with you."

With thoughtful design and artisanal details, the 13-piece line includes clothing and homeware such as placemats, napkins, coasters, and a farmer's market tote. The capsule is now available to shop on both Citizens of Humanity and Moda Operandi.

I wait all year for the summer sale season, so now that we've reached the point in the season where retailers are slashing prices left and right, it's my time to shine. I've been spending many hours of downtime focused on my favorite activity: sitting in the air conditioning while sifting through all the best luxury sales. Right now, I've been toggling between a dizzying number of browser tabs at Saks Fifth Avenue, Ssense, and Moda Operandi, whose sale sections I keep coming back to.

Now, usually these sales lean heavily on summer stock, but I was pleased to find a significant number of fall-ready items, too, which only heightened my shopping fervor. After putting in a few too many hours of scrolling and editing, I managed to narrow down my favorites from all of the above to just 33 pieces—that is, the 33 *best* pieces on sale right now. Launched in 2020, the Fifteen Percent Pledge envisioned a new future for retail: 15% of shelf space dedicated to Black-owned businesses and entrepreneurs. The percentage (which represents the demographic of Black people in the United States) seems minute at first glance, but in a climate where Black brands are historically looked over, the ask was radical. The idea for the pledge came to Brother Vellies Creative Director Aurora James following the murder of George Floyd as a way for companies to take actionable steps toward racial equity. In the span of a few years, the nonprofit organization has partnered with over 28 retailers, including Nordstrom, Macy's, and Sephora, funneling $10 billion in revenue toward Black-owned businesses in the process.

As the next phase of Fifteen Percent Pledge's vision, the nonprofit has partnered with Moda Operandi to spotlight Black designers making waves in fashion right now. The eight selected brands are featured in a special trunk show, where designs from each are available for pre-order for a limited time. Specially curated by James herself along with Moda Operandi's merchandising team, the roster of names includes buzzy emerging labels Head of State, Agbobly, and Sukeina—all of which were 2022 CFDA Fashion Fund Finalists—as well as AnOnlyChild and Dur Doux. Rounding out the ready-to-wear offerings in the show are Sunni Sunni, a unisex footwear line founded by designer Sunni Dixon, fine jeweler Lauren Godfrey's Harwell Godfrey, and James's own Brother Vellies. "I know firsthand the systemic barriers that Black business owners face in trying to increase their exposure to the larger retail market," says James. "Collaborations like these are not only crucial for building brand visibility but are an important step to push the industry forward by challenging how corporations approach supporting Black businesses long-term. Our partnership with Moda Operandi is rooted in the mutual desire to create a sustainable ecosystem for Black entrepreneurs, all while showcasing their incredible products and designs along the way." Bringing more talent to the forefront is definitely a step in the right direction toward greater racial equity in fashion.

Head of State

It's been an eventful year for emerging brand Head of State. It became a 2022 CFDA Fashion Fund Finalist and helped close out New York Fashion Week this year with a packed, much-talked-about show. The brainchild of Taofeek Abijako, Head of State continually draws influences from Abijako's upbringing in Nigeria as well as his experiences as an activist. While Abijako has been a staple of the menswear circuit since 2018, recent focus has shifted toward his talent for modern and elegant eveningwear—as seen on Evan Mock at last year's Met Gala.

AnOnlyChild

When Public School hit the New York fashion scene with its utilitarian-meets-streetwear designs over a decade ago, the label instantly became an industry darling. Following the brand's success, designers Maxwell Osborne and Dao-Yi Chow were appointed as creative directors of DKNY—a crowning achievement for fresh faces in the business. But after growing pains, a shaky reboot, and the strains of the pandemic, Osborne shifted his focus to establishing his own project. Going solo, Osborne created AnOnlyChild in 2020, showcasing his first full collection in 2021. There are plenty of links to Osborne's Jamaican heritage within the collection, like old-school floral prints and silk separates made to look like classic mesh shirts in Rastafarian colors. 

Dur Doux

A look at Dur Doux's most recent collection is like a boost of vitamin C for the eyes. Founded by mother-daughter team Cynthia and Najla Burt, Dur Doux is exactly what you'd want to pack for a five-star tropical vacation. Think floral-printed separates and vibrant evening dresses in juicy citrus shades.

Brother Vellies

While most luxury shoe brands use "made in Italy" as their big selling point, Brother Vellies does things differently. Brother Vellies employs local artisans from around the world, with much focus on supporting local craftsmanship in Kenya. Since its founding in 2013, the accessory label has turned into a fashion-person favorite with statement boots and heels that instantly catch the eye.

Agbobly

You know a Jacques Agbobly knit when you see it: vivid threads of yarn in cheerful knit arrangements usually finished with some type of cool beading. Agbobly is only 25 years old, but the Parsons alum is already a CFDA Fashion Fund Finalist and has captured the attention of the industry's most seasoned editors. With each new collection, the designer infuses elements of his upbringing in Togo along with the traditions of West African culture.

Sukeina

Power colors and power silhouettes are what define Sukeina. Known for his elaborate, origami-like folds, Creative Director Omar Salam constantly challenges the idea of romance with exact shapes and hard edges. The result is striking and sophisticated pieces that take up space and send a message.

Sunni Sunni

Sunni Sunni might as well be Hollywood's best-kept secret. Its signature square-toe boots have graced the feet of everyone from Burna Boy and Usher to Diddy and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. Despite Sunni Sunni's clientele heavily skewing male, founder Sunni Dixon designs with all genders in mind. The utilitarian boots can help pull together a pair of high-waist jeans and a sweater as effortlessly as a breezy maxi dress. 

Harwell Godfrey

Everything has meaning for jeweler Lauren Godfrey—right down to the type of stone and its arrangement. Godfrey is the woman behind Harwell Godfrey, a line of fine jewelry inspired by the African diaspora. Each precious stone is a beacon for healing as well as a pretty accessory. Godfrey weaves together ancient rituals and spiritual affirmations within her pieces for a unique feel-good approach.

Moda Operandi is a very well-known and well-shopped fashion destination, but as of today, it's also a luxury beauty destination. Yes, that's right. For me—and let's just say my best clubbing days are behind me—Khaite's Carina Sequin Maxi Dress is a great investment piece. I'd wear it with one of my husband's tuxedo jackets draped over the shoulders and vintage Bulgari silver.

Breakout brand to know for the holiday season?

Des_Phemmes is a Moda favorite. We discovered the brand about a year ago, launched it exclusively, and have never looked back. Designer Salvo Rizza has checked all the boxes: feathers, shine, and super-short hemlines.

Among them is Lauren Santo Domingo, Co-Founder of Moda Operandi and arbiter of all things chic. The New York City–based fashion entrepreneur is a fixture on the front row at fashion week and is dialed into what modern women want to wear.

Santo Domingo is also tapped into what customers are shopping for in the upcoming season before the pieces hit the virtual shelves. Moda Operandi offers preorders straight off the runways, so their team has hard data about the biggest sales drivers long before they actually ship. With that insight at hand and the most memorable F/W 22 runway looks still fresh in her mind, I asked Santo Domingo to weigh in about the biggest fall trends to know about in the upcoming season and the exact pieces to buy into. Ahead, get an early look at five trends that are set to be huge this fall.

Power Casual

According to Lauren Santo Domingo: "My level of formality has definitely relaxed during lockdown and I'm not rushing back into high heels and shift dresses for daytime anytime soon. However, I still enjoy getting dressed up for the office or appointments—or yes, dare I say it, school runs. The Runway Report's data proves that our Moda client is equally as tired of dressing for Zoom. Fall's suiting is a bit more tailored than we've seen in the past few seasons—Carolina Herrera's perfect cigarette pant was a winner, as were Brandon Maxwell's immaculately-cut jackets. I'm also finding myself reaching for a kitten heel where I used to always choose a flat for day. My go-to, though, is High Sport's kick pant, which broke records when they debuted in the F/W 22 trunk shows. They combine the cut of a polished trouser with the comfort of a legging—this is as close as I will ever slide back into loungewear."

According to Moda Operandi data: The luxury customer is on the hunt for elevated daywear, but she is not ready to give up the comfort that she has become accustomed to. High Sport's signature kick pant was our #1 seller by total units sold and total customers shopped—solidifying its status as the undisputed cult hit of the season. Our client is eager to embrace her former lifestyle. In the realm of tailoring, she's spending, on average, $2024 per item (a 67% increase from last year)—with trousers and blazers up 78% and 84%, respectively.

Sequins and Crystals

According to Lauren Santo Domingo: "I've always been a bit of a magpie, and F/W 22 has no shortage of options for fellow sparkle and shine enthusiasts. Whether mermaid-inspired paillettes at Altuzarra, major crystal embellishments at David Koma, or Wes Gordon's daytime take on sequins at Herrera, there's something for everyone and every occasion. Breakout Moda favorite Des_Phemmes' got the styling of the trend just right, pairing heavy metal slip skirts with casual tees."

According to Moda Operandi data: Sales of sequins and crystals are up 351% to last year. Des_Phemmes has proven to be a firm customer favorite, coming in as the #2 brand driver for all first-time trunk show orders. Breakout hits from the trunk show included the Embroidered Velvet Mini Skirt (the top seller this season), the Strapless Mini Dress, the Crushed Velvet Maxi, and the Purple Paillette Car Coat.

Gloves

According to Lauren Santo Domingo: "Gloves started to feel modern (with a nod to Bonfire of the Vanities) to me last year when I commissioned my tailor Christy Rilling to make a column dress with a matching pair for the Met's Acquisitions dinner. There must have been something in the air (call it collective consciousness) because they ended up walking just about every runway in February. We received endless special order requests for those illustrious 'for styling only' sets that weren't available in Trunk shows, and those that were actually available for purchase sold incredibly well. I love the idea of having a pair match your dress exactly, but it's also chic to do a sheer embellished glove like Alex Perry's with a simple dress in lieu of jewelry. I don't see this trend slowing down anytime soon—they were in all of the Couture collections and are continuing to break sales numbers in the Resort 23 Trunk shows that are on site now."

According to Moda Operandi data: Sales volume of gloves rose 2872% compared to last fall/winter—and we're not talking about your average winter mittens. Small yet mighty finishing touches are often the most exciting part of getting dressed up. Once viewed as old-fashioned or costumey, gloves have emerged as an edgy, avant-garde evening styling tool. Gloves were seen on virtually every designer's runway, and the Moda client was on board: sales were up 343% to last fall/winter, with Valentino's taking home the crown as the top seller, followed closely behind by styles from Emilia Wickstead, Simone Rocha, Erdem, and Jil Sander. 

Over-the-Top Eveningwear

According to Lauren Santo Domingo: "After several seasons where designers played it safe in the face of so much uncertainty in the world, it was a joy to see the return of fabulous gowns on the runway. Once our clients have Save the Dates for destination weddings and galas in hand, they know it's time to place their preorders. There were fantastic options in just about every collection, but some personal favorites (and top sellers) included Wes Gordon's '80s-inspired tulle gowns for Carolina Herrera, Halpern's ombré fringe dress ideal for an art gala, and, of course, everything in Valentino's 'PP' pink."

According to Moda Operandi data: Eveningwear sales are up 200% year-over-year, with spend per item up 33%. Priced at $21,990, Carolina Herrera's Strapless Silk Gown embroidered with a bow motif took the top spot, followed by Valentino's Pink PP Off-The-Shoulder Silk Chiffon Gown (which closed the show), Oscar de la Renta's Velvet Bustier Gown, Giambattista Valli's Off-the-Shoulder Georgette Tulle Dress, and Halpern's Ombré Fringed Gown.

Fuzzy Outerwear

According to Lauren Santo Domingo: "I have sworn off fur for good and Moda's policy is the same. Over the past few years, many of the top designers we work with have pledged to go fur-free, and fall had a wealth of coats that make a simple outfit suddenly feel new again: Michael Kors, Tom Ford, Stella McCartney, and Des_Phemmes all put out winners. Danish brand By Malene Birger does some of the best—and at a great price point. I was lucky enough to wear their Kavela sample during the (snowy) New York shows, and it is absolutely incredible. I stayed so warm that I had to preorder it. Here's to hoping outdoor dining is here to stay so that I can keep one on all through dinner."

According to Moda Operandi data: Sales of outerwear are up 66% from last year—and boast more specialty, with each unit sold costing an average of 38% more. Top trends include faux fur—which rose 30% in sales versus last Fall / Winter season—and printed pieces, which are up 366% in sales to last year, making up 26% of sales in the category compared to last year's 9%. By Malene Birger's Kavela Faux Fur Coat drove the most units sold in the outerwear category and came in as the #2 unit driver of the season. The coat was worn by Lauren Santo Domingo on a snowy day during New York Fashion Week shortly after its debut on the catwalk in Copenhagen. LSD's look was among the top 10 best-performing Instagram posts of the season. Another faux-fur favorite came courtesy of cruelty-free, eco pioneer Stella McCartney, whose Fur-Free Wool-Blend Coat was the #2 top-seller in pieces from new-to–trunk show brands.

One of the most frustrating things about shopping in an Instagram age is that items can become cult favourites overnight, and waiting lists can spiral before you've had time to enter your credit card details. The one way to guarantee that those pieces you want won't sell out is to shop through Moda Operandi's trunkshows, where you can pre-order designer collections straight from the runway.

"When we first launched, the focus was to give women the power to shop an entire collection," explains Moda Operandi's founder, Lauren Santo Domingo. "A simple concept that, shockingly, no one had thought of yet. I had been given access to the runway, so why not share that privilege with everyone else?"

These previews also have a benefit for designers too. "The other side was the goal to create a company that worked within the industry while helping designers to grow," Santo Domingo shares. "Early in my career, I saw how difficult and costly it is to launch and produce a collection. Moda Operandi is a not only a viable revenue stream for designers but an excellent platform for emerging talent."

1. You Can Skip Waiting Lists

"Being able to secure those potentially impossible-to-find items in advance actually supersedes the sartorial hysteria associated with frenzied brick-and-mortar shopping," says Santo Domingo. "Our trunkshows offer every color, every size, and every look from a designer's collection. There is never, ever that sense of panic that you might not get exactly what you want. It's a much more civilized way to shop."

2. Everyone From Prada to Victoria Beckham Is Involved

The list of designers that offer trunkshows with Moda Operandi is seriously impressive. From New York Fashion Week we have Brock Collection, Ralph Lauren, Oscar de la Renta and more. London's list of designers includes Victoria Beckham, Christopher Kane, JW Anderson, Erdem and Emilia Wickstead. From Milan, there are Prada, Dolce & Gabbana and Versace, among others, and Paris includes Loewe, Isabel Marant, Jacquemus and more. This means that you don't wait to see in six months' time which pieces buyers selected from a collection. You can buy special runway pieces that won't make it into other shops, so you have more choice. 

4. It Helps You to Pre-Plan Your Wardrobe

Trunkshows are linked to the fashion calendar, so you are shopping one season ahead— i.e., this September, you are ordering from the spring/summer 2019 collections. This model of shopping is all about forward planning. As these items haven't been endorsed by influencers or fashion buyers yet, you will be less influenced by hype around products and can select those pieces that truly resonate with your own personal style.

"I love to pre-order a few looks from my favorite collections every season and have the best looks of the season hanging in my closet ready to go," says Lauren. "It gives me something to look forward to every season."

5. You Pay In Installments

To place your order, you pay a 50% deposit, and then pay the final installment when your product is ready. It can take several months for the design houses to create your ordered pieces. Items usually have an estimated delivery date, but it's worth noting that this isn't a precise date—it usually gives a two-or-so month window.

I have a fantasy world in which everything is sartorially perfect. It’s very much like the second half of an Anne Hathaway movie: I’ve finally learned how to do my hair, I don’t unknowingly drag my sleeves through mustard, and I walk flawlessly in heels through SoHo without so much as a glance down at the cobblestoned minefield beneath my feet.

The wardrobe? Amazing, obviously. And I’m not kidding when I say it is literally (and I am correctly using “literally”) the stuff Moda Operandi's summer collection is made of. These five on-trend looks are the epitome of my dream style—here’s how I plan on introducing them into my real life this summer.

In my imaginary life, I wear white on white on white. Without spilling. Without ever needing to hesitate before getting into a cab (backseats are consistently clean in my imaginary New York) or riding a Vespa. No rogue ballpoint pen ever grazes the exterior of my flawless handbag, and every restaurant and café anticipates my white tote’s arrival and conveniently has a little hook under the table from which I hang it. Real-life goal: This is the summer I master white denim, starting with these high rise jeans.

My old life in Sydney involved spending tons of time at the beach, and the primary goal of my swimwear was to remain on my person despite the ocean waves determined to remove it. In New York, swimwear just sits optimistically in my top drawer with a mental note attached to it: I am going to go to the beach every weekend this summer. But not in my imaginary life. Because in my imaginary life, I spend an inordinate amount of time on a large boat anchored just off the coast of Italy, and my effortless dives into the still, azure water eternally result in an intact bikini and hair that dries into soft, silky waves. But take note: This summer, a ruffled one-sleeve swimsuit will be making regular appearances, moonlighting as a top with high-waisted pants. And it’s going to be fantastic.

Having spent time on the Italian Riviera, I can assure you: There are women who do this. As it stands, I do not fear statement accessories. Not impractically small bags (any excuse to not bring my phone), not huge gold earrings (worn most days), and certainly not loud shoes. What I do not have, however, is a yacht (again, it's a very important detail). And what I do not do is sunbathe on said yacht while accessorizing my ruffled Johanna Ortiz bikini with dramatically oversize earrings. I do not recline in a sun lounger, the sequins of my strappy Dolce & Gabbana sandals catching the afternoon light. To be honest, I don’t even want to be that person—but I do want to start bringing these special-occasion pieces out to play during the day more often. Pledging here to make my go-to accessories a lot more fun.

Do I love ’70s-inspired fashion? Yes. Do I limit myself because I get nervous about wearing loud prints? Also, yes—but in my imaginary life, this is not the case. I don’t dismiss bright, happy, clashing swirls of color as something best left to a cooler person. I wear them like it’s no big deal, not for a second wondering if I’m going to stick out like a sore thumb. Plan ahead for this summer: Team bright retro prints with chic, white, perfectly unscuffed flats (as per “white” notes above), and immediately feel happy, carefree, and awesome.

I resent the fact that we live in a world where this Temperley London jumpsuit is not deemed appropriate for most offices. In my imaginary life, there’s at least one gold lamé look in every boardroom. In real life, I’m determined to dress up more. I will not be daunted by a floor-length dress. I will not shy away from wearing all one bright color. Hot-pink Delpozo will find itself being worn during the day for no particular occasion. My imaginary life is going to start working its way into my everyday, no yacht required.
