Now and then, a “dated” shoe trend will reemerge from the depths of irrelevance, and they're usually polarizing. Some of them are rejected vehemently, while others are quickly embraced once again. The latest dated heel trend to make its way back into the mainstream was just spotted on Mindy Kaling in NYC, while out promoting her new show, Not Suitable for Work. Kailing was wearing a lovely summer ensemble consisting of a pale yellow dress by Simkhai and clear PVC pumps, a look known as the "naked" heel trend.

Other celebrities have cosigned on the trend recently for their own NYC outings. Back in May, the night before the Met Gala, Zoë Kravitz was spotted wearing a pair of YSL pumps from the fashion house’s F/W 26 collection. If you were scrolling on TikTok this summer (or even last year for that matter), then you were probably served at least one video on your For You Page featuring a college-aged woman preparing for sorority rush. In the video, she looks directly at the camera as she takes the viewer through her "OOTD." One of the most popular brands that came up in these videos was none other than Kendra Scott.

Scott founded her eponymous label in 2002 with $500 and a tea box full of her jewelry that she brought door-to-door to local Austin, Texas, boutiques. Now, 20 years—and a billion-dollar business—later, Scott is adding another line to her already stacked résumé: published author.

In the latest episode of Who What Wear With Hillary Kerr, Scott talks about her latest project, Born to Shine: Do Good, Find Your Joy, and Build a Life You Love, a autobiography that includes stories of how she launched Kendra Scott, what it means to have a "Shake the snow globe" moment, and why her first failed business was a blessing in disguise.

This book, Born to Shine, is amazing, but it's also not what I expected. You are a relatively private person and you really went there. I thought it was remarkable that you shared so much of your story. What made you want to go there as a whole and to plant your flag in the ground to share all the edges of your truth? It feels radical in the best possible way.

It was 2019. I left Colorado on New Year's Eve and flew to Kenosha, Wisconsin—where I'm from—and picked up my father—who had had his second major heart attack—flew him to Austin, Texas, where I live, with an ambulance waiting, where he then stayed until March 12.

That's how my 2020 started not even knowing in a few months all the craziness that was about to happen. I write in my book about the "Shake the snow globe" moments in our life. That was a "Shake the snow globe" moment. So many things were happening fast, and so many difficult things were happening fast for me.

From my father to my business having to close all of my stores to having to completely pivot and shift my business. I was going through a divorce. I personally had some health issues, and I ended up in the same hospital that my father was in.

During that time, I was journaling a lot, and I was looking at life through a different lens and seeing Instagram and seeing articles being written about me that were all positive and like, "She's on top of the world." Inside, I was absolutely destroyed and just having a really tough time.

I felt like this was the time to share that and to be vulnerable. To show that there's power in vulnerability.

Through all of those valleys that have happened in your life, what are some of your biggest learnings from those otherwise terrifying or difficult situations?

I like to talk a lot about failing forward because every single one of those moments—whether it's been a failure of my first business—if I hadn't had those five years of that failed little hat business that I had when I first started out at 19 years old, I wouldn't be sitting here talking to you today about the business I have today.

I needed that experience. I needed to learn the things I did right but, more importantly, all the things I did wrong, so that when I set up my next thing—my bigger thing—it was going to work.

When those "Shake the snow globe" moments happen—and they are going to happen—that if you can just try to see beyond it a little bit, see through that blizzard, the sun's gonna shine, and it's gonna shine brighter than it ever has, especially if you can look in those moments and go, "Gosh, that's why."

I'm curious about your business plan specifically around how, in the early days, folks said, "Well, you have to be in New York." "Well, you have to be in L.A." You said, "No, I'm gonna do it my way, and I'm going to focus it in a different way, and I'm going to think about things in a different way." What made you hit on that strategy?

Being in Austin was part of the DNA of my brand. The style, the aesthetic, the music, the culture, which, so many people back 20 years ago didn't know Austin. Now people are like, "It's the buzz," right? 

It really had this amazing vibe, and it was part of the design process for me. I would be influenced by all the great things happening in my city. Editors and others would say, "Well, you're not going to have a legitimate fashion business if you're not on one of the coasts." I just was like, "No."

Then they'd see my collection. They'd be like, "This is so refreshing and amazing, and I love the color, and I love how you're utilizing all these new shapes and cuts and different things."

You walk into the Kendra Scott booth, and we're doing our own thing. So sticking to that and being proud of where I was from. I wasn't going to let that stop me.

We often turn to women over 40 for top-notch sartorial advice given their experience fine-tuning their wardrobes over the years. In my opinion, Mindy Kaling is one of the best celebrities to follow on Instagram. Not only does she show off her signature sense of humor, but she consistently posts outfit photos complete with all the brands tagged—now that's serviceable content. As I dedicated a whole story to earlier this year, Kaling has amazing taste, so when she recently did a super-informative IGTV video on her favorite lipsticks for dark-skinned women, I simply had to watch the whole thing. 

"One of the things about having dark skin is that it's really hard to find really pretty lip colors that flatter your skin," Kaling says in her Instagram video. "Either they're too chalky or too light. Sometimes the models they use are too light-skinned, so you can't really gauge. So what I thought I'd do is show you all of my favorite lip colors for all of us dark-skinned girls out there. … I think [they] will also look good on you if you have light-colored skin." I entered a suite at the W Hollywood to find Mindy Kaling curled up on a couch, barefoot. She had taken her shoes off moments before I arrived. They were uncomfortable. It was the first of many moments that reaffirmed what I had already suspected—Kaling really is as warm, approachable, and relatable as she seems, whether that's on TV, in movies, or across social media (her cool 4.3 million Instagram followers know what I'm talking about). You see, I have been following her career for years, ever since I was first introduced to her as Kelly Kapoor on The Office, so I was pleasantly surprised to find myself in a situation where Kaling was asking me if I was hungry. "Do you want a lemon tart?" 

I was there to speak to Kaling about her new partnership with a new and affordable shaving brand, Joy. "Because I'm such an avid Instagrammer and I'm so into social media, I would really resent if someone that I followed was partnered with someone that they didn't actually use," Kaling tells me. "I'm sort of at a place now in my career where I feel like doing something inauthentic would not make any sense for me."

The word authentic seems to be the underlying theme of Kaling's entire career, which is refreshing and maybe even a little ironic, considering she lives and works in Hollywood, a place that's known for a distinct lack of authenticity. "When I was younger, I would buy whatever razor was the cheapest. I would just get those 20-packs of orange razors and keep them with me at school, in college. It wasn't until I had a little bit of disposable income that I decided, when I'd go to CVS or Walmart or wherever, to say, 'Oh, I'll spend a little bit more.' The difference between a good razor and a bad razor is massive, and it makes shaving, which a lot of American women do, so much easier and more enjoyable, frankly." 

"The products, which I have since had the chance to use, are legit. The razor itself is weighty in your hand, and as such, feels more luxurious than other disposable options. The combination of five blades and a moisture strip made my legs feel smooth and soft, especially when paired with the brand's Shave Gel, which lathers up into a creamy, whipped texture. In short, it gets the job done and looks good while doing it.

"This is the razor I'll use for the rest of my life," Kaling says, before adding that before this partnership she would "usually use a men's razor or this very hyper-feminized pale pink thing with a lotus flower." Joy's products don't fall into either of those categories. They're colorful and cute and functional. "I just like it; it makes me feel like a millennial, like I’m young and cool. I'm really into it. It's not trying to be a philosophy or anything, it's just a simple, good razor. That's all it is."

Similarly to her shaving routine, Kaling's skincare routine has also evolved over time. "Over the past five or six years, I've really gotten so into my skincare routine because I still break out," she says. "I break out less than I did when I was a teenager, but it's never gone away, and I don't think it ever will, so I do a whole routine."

She starts out by using a warm, wet washcloth to remove most of her makeup, before using a cleansing brush and "very simple cleanser, like Cetaphil ($10)," to remove anything that might be left behind. Then it's on to toner, serum, moisturizer, and eye cream. "I do the whole thing now," she reveals. 

She names one of celebrity esthetician Joanna Vargas's serums as one of her favorite skincare products: "It is so hydrating. I always thought Oh, well, I don’t want to put something super hydrating on my skin; it's going to make me break out, and actually, if I don't use it, if I let myself get dry, that's when I break out for whatever reason. That took me a really long time to learn."

"That whole line is great for oily skin and also anti-aging because sometimes you feel like you have to do one or the other," she says. "I need moisture, but it has to be the right kind of moisture."

When I ask if she's ever gone to see Joanna Vargas personally, she's quick to answer. "Oh yeah, I've been seeing her for years. I love her. She's so good. Actually, I'm going to see her today, I think." 

Aside from Vargas's skincare products, Kaling is also a fan of those from the iconic skincare brand La Mer, which is famous for its fermented kelp formula, otherwise known as Miracle Broth.

"I love makeup; I love the ritual of putting makeup on; I love my relationship with my makeup artist, but I don't wear makeup every day," Kaling tells me. "In fact, I find that if I wear makeup for more than three or four days straight—I mean, I'll obviously wash my face at night and start over—I need a break. I need to just have really, really clean skin that's hyper-moisturized. I need to do that for a couple of days."

"I take off every last tiny particle of makeup from my face. When I was in my 20's, I'd be lazy and just be like Eh, I didn't quite take off my eye makeup, because I'm not going to go buy eye makeup remover. Now, it's part of my whole routine. Actually, I find it very meditative to take it all off. It feels like self-care." 

Her off-duty hairstyling routine is just as low-maintenance as her off-duty makeup routine (or, rather, the lack thereof). She calls hair "a huge mystery" and swears by a '90s standby—the beloved scrunchie. "I barely put any product in it, blow-dry it badly, and throw it up in a scrunchie," she laughs. "I'm glad scrunchies are back. I'm going to start doing a top knot because I think styling my hair is too hard." 

Along with learning every last detail about her beauty routine, I was interested to know more about Kaling's latest movie, Late Night. In it, she plays Molly Patel, the only woman and minority staff writer on a popular comedy show (the talk show host is played by Emma Thompson). It's a story that's close to Kaling's own experience as a writer on The Office. "The characters in the movie are a lot less nice than the guys at The Office were to me, but it was true that I was the only woman and the only minority on staff at The Office when I started back then in 2004. So that’s the same."

Kaling wrote 25 episodes of The Office, while also acting and executive producing the show. Her favorite episode that she wrote is called "The Injury." In it, Michael Scott, who is played by Steve Carell, famously injures his foot on a George Foreman grill. If you haven't seen it, go watch it. You won't be disappointed. "I really like that episode," Kaling says. "It's a really weird one, but—yeah. That one was really funny to me."

I can't mention The Office without mentioning The Mindy Project, which is another one of Kaling's beloved creations. "I really loved playing Mindy Lahiri on The Mindy Project, because she was so glamorous, but she was so funny," Kaling tells me. "You don't usually get to do both of those things. In comedy, it's usually supposed to be completely devoid of any kind of glamour. That's what I loved about her. She took her clothes very seriously, and she, herself, was such an out-there, flawed, funny character."

Her characters break the traditional Hollywood mold, as does Kaling, herself. Knowing this, it's no surprise that she names Reese Witherspoon as one of her biggest inspirations, in regards to all things beauty, fashion, and career. Witherspoon is, after all, vocal about creating multi-faceted and representative roles for women in Hollywood. She's even founded her own media brand, which is called Hello Sunshine, to further the cause.

"Reese Witherspoon is pretty much a one-woman stop for all of those things, right? She's such an incredible producer. I like Big Little Lies. I think the projects that she takes, particularly the ones that are adapted from books, are just so strong, and she's also just so fashionable. I think her fashion label, Draper James, is great. I know it's expanded the sizes, so that's really cool for girls who love her but who aren't—you know—a size two or four. She's killing it right now in all categories."

So, yeah, even Mindy Kaling, who is a professional icon for so many, has a professional icon of her own. Like I said before, she's relatable through and through.

We had reached the end of our interview, and I had one last question to ask. What brings her joy? "To me, it's spending time with my kid. She's a year and half now, so she's really fun. I just love swimming with her and having a nice L.A, life with her. I grew up on the East Coast, so the fact that she eats avocado and goes swimming every single day… I'm like 'Who are you?' I love re-living childhood with her."

Actress, writer, author, producer… you name it, she's on top of it—all while recently welcoming her first child, Katharine. Naturally, Mindy's wardrobe has undergone a similar evolution. As someone who literally shops for a living—and loves it—I’ve always been confused by my friends, relatives, or even readers who complain about how much they hate it or how difficult they find it. While it’s hard for me to imagine, I’ve come to accept that it’s a real problem people face. And, while my go-to answer used to be, “Tell me what you’re looking for and I’ll help you find it,” recently I’ve taken up less of a give a man a fish approach and more of a teach a man to fish response.

So what do I do? It’s simple: I tell them to find a stylish celebrity whose body type feels similar to theirs, whose overall sense of style speaks to you, or even better, both, and buy either pieces you’ve seen them wear or ones inspired by their outfits. After all, armed with expert stylists and all the best brands vying to dress them, few people master both red carpet and street style quite like celebs.

If their next question is how to keep up with them and find out what they’re wearing, I go on to explain that this can be done a number of ways. You can follow them (or accounts dedicated to their style) on Instagram, regularly check fashion news sites such as Who What Wear (duh!), or even be your own editor and look at the same sites we do from time to time, like StarStyle and OutfitID for of-the-moment celebrity dressing updates.

Whichever avenue you choose, looking to a stylish star can change the way you shop forever and save you a lot of seemingly wasted time if shopping isn’t your favorite thing. Mindy Kaling is officially a mom! E! just reported that the actress gave birth to a baby girl on December 15, who she named Katherine Kaling. (It has a nice ring to it, don't you think?) The name Katherine is as classic as they come—it's been bestowed to members of the royal family for centuries, including the one and only Kate Middleton (also known as Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge).

Kaling had plenty of time to decide upon her first child's name. As E! pointed out, she confirmed the baby's gender during a visit on Ellen DeGeneres's talk show in October. "I am not waiting," said Kaling, "I wanted to know way early."

Given Kaling's love of fashion, which was consistently on display throughout her just-ended series The Mindy Project, Katherine Kaling is sure to have an enviable wardrobe, which we're hoping the new mom will document on her own Instagram account.

“Do like Mindy and keep your feet close together to create a narrow base. You can achieve this look by crossing your feet or just putting them close together. This position elongates the body,” Coppola advises.

“Do like Kendall and nail a power pose with your weight on your back foot,” Coppola told us. “If you are wearing a long dress with a slit, this pose works even better because your weightless front leg can peep out the slit, creating a long vertical line. Make sure to add a slight bend to the front knee so the leg looks relaxed.”
