There are several buzzy denim trends this season, but I'm not sure that any compare to the buzz of light-wash jeans. The wash, which has historically been thought to make an outfit look more casual, is being styled a bit differently this time around: with heels. The newest It girl of 2026, Sarah Pidgeon, just displayed why the combination is so cool with a specific shoe trend that makes light-wash jeans look even more of-the-moment: metallic heels, which make trends look fresher and more intentional than, say, a black, brown, or other neutral-colored pair would.

Metallic shoes cycle in and out of trend status, and for 2026, they're undoubtedly in. Pidgeon's outfit included a red leather jacket, light-wash straight-leg jeans, a Chanel pre-fall 2026 leopard-print oversize flap bag, and a pair of metallic gold cap-toe heels from the same collection. Given how incredibly buzzy Chanel has been under the creative direction of Matthieu Blazy from the start, it's safe to say that anything he designs will remain a trend for seasons to come—metallic heels included.

As a millennial myself, Alexa Chung will always have a special place in my heart and be the ultimate style icon of our generation. If you've ever put on an outfit of many colors and had no idea what shoes to wear with it, I have a fashion crowdsourced suggestion for you. More often than not, the shoe color celebrities and fashion people choose when wearing a multicolored outfit (typically a dress) is silver. Silver takes the cake for being one of the prettiest shoe color trends of the season, and it's also one of the most versatile. Furthermore, while I call it a trend, it's quite timeless, so you don't have to worry about your new silver shoes falling out of favor soon after you buy them.

A perfect example of how great an option silver is when the shoe color to wear isn't obvious came yesterday in NYC, when Chase Sui Wonders made an appearance on The Today show wearing a vintage Anna Sui dress. With the colorful striped dress—you guessed it—she wore a pair of silver shoes. (FYI: Silver shoes are usually in the form of strappy heels when worn by celebrities, in keeping with the style Wonders opted for.) Silver heels are often a go-to for formal occasions, but as Wonders proved, they work just as well with something more casual.

The statement color was practically everywhere, showing up on runways, social media, and celebrities right and left. Now? Well, I think I can speak for a lot of people in fashion when I say that I'm getting a little tired of seeing silver every time I go outside or log on to Instagram. Another statement color trend, though, is having the opposite effect.

Gold is making a big splash as we approach the holidays and the start of 2025. One of fashion's favorite style stars of this decade, Moda Operandi's chief brand officer and co-founder, Lauren Santo Domingo, wore a sequin gold blazer to a Chanel event at MoMA just days ago; The Perfect Couple's Meghann Fahy wore a minidress in the same metallic shade to Giorgio Armani's New York show last week; and Jasmine Tookes celebrated the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show's epic return in a floor-length gold couture gown by Aadnevik. On Wednesday, J.Crew released its buzzy new collection with Christopher John Rogers, which included a bevy of shiny gold pieces, including an already-viral barn jacket. But the proof of gold's current uptick doesn't stop there.

On Thursday night, just days after the Academy Museum Gala, where she made her first official red carpet appearance since giving birth to her first child, Sofia Richie Grainge was spotted at Paris Hilton's concert at the Hollywood Palladium wearing—you guessed it—gold. From Miu Miu to Rabanne, the SS24 runways saw a mix of high-shine designs going down the runway, and whether I want to brave a statement silver outfit or just add a pop with an accessory, there's plenty to choose from.

Style Notes: "Grab your Boss briefcase and your sharp Bottega Veneta shoulder pads—it's time to go to work! Dressing for business was big news on the spring/summer 2024 runway with designers exploring a very particular type of uniform—that of a stylish corporate stockbroker living the high-flying dream in '90s NYC. Specific, yes, but I find the best fashion always is. From structural suiting to button-up shirts, social media too has turned very Working Girl of late, and I'm not mad about it. For me, the trend is encapsulated in the long pencil skirt which we're seeing so much of on the market—wear with slingbacks, a blazer (with nothing underneath) and accessorise with a print out of your recent investment portfolio." - Maxine Eggenberger, Deputy Editpr

I love when I start spotting an outfit formula in the wild, and NYC certainly has one it's loving this season. From SoHo to Brooklyn to the Upper East Side, the fashion crowd seems to have truly united in this easy winter uniform, present company included, and chic New Yorkers are wearing it on repeat as they brave the cold. If push came to shove, it could effortlessly lend itself to being just polished enough for a casual Friday at the office, cool and low-key enough for a Saturday lunch date followed by a trip to Trader Joe's, or cozy and comfortable enough for a Sunday morning dog walk to grab a pastry from Raf's—without breaking a sweat.

It's highly likely you already have many of these pieces on high rotation in your wardrobe, in which case I encourage you to throw them all together and join the gang. If not, feel free to delight in these rather affordable options. Bags are all under $90, denim is under $100, coats (long coats!) are under $140, and that's only half of it.

Cozy Knit Hats

I love a beanie, and there seem to be so many good options this season, from elevated knit styles with quiet luxury energy to pom-pommed injections of personality in very chic colorways. Given my tendency to accidentally leave them in the backs of Ubers, I've only curated options that are under $50.

Sunny Sweaters

Maybe it's to counter the drab gray of the city in the winter, but I've been noticing lots of happy, lemony hues when it comes to knitwear. Slightly oversize styles feel relaxed and double nicely as a chunky scarf or a cozy layer to drape over the shoulders of your coat, as the cool kids are doing.

Structured Black Bags

Never be sorry about investing in a black bag you love and wearing it constantly. These structured shoulder and crossbody bags are making low-key looks feel polished all over town.

Metallic Flats

Metallic accessories continue to be super buzzy, and as we definitely know by now, flat shoes are truly the moment. A little pop of silver or gold below the ankle is definitely what's giving these effortless outfits a cool-kid edge.

Wide-Leg Denim

As much as I know the pendulum will swing back at some point, I'm trying to imagine a world where I go back to wearing something other than wide-leg jeans, and it's truly a struggle. Whether it's a dark wash or distressed style, I love the look of relaxed denim and flats under a big, polished coat.

Cool Coats

Speaking of polished coats, these just might be the five best value options on the internet right now. The best ones (in my humble opinion) are longline coats that fall below the knee, with a nice little drop to the shoulder for that menswear-inspired vibe.

Metallics have officially reached a fever pitch, with high-shine accessories selling at the speed of light these days. Well, let me introduce you to everyone's next obsession: metallic jeans. Both Proenza Schouler and Gabriela Hearst both showed styles during NYFW last month, and they immediately caught my attention for their oddly low-key feel, considering the statement pants were styled with wardrobe mainstays like blazers and ankle boots.

It didn't take long before the runway shows sent me into an internet rabbit hole in search of a similar pair I could shop for now—and not have to wait another six months for. As if reading my mind, Gap released a set of jeans in both silver and gold colorways. Even better, they ring up for under $100, making them a no-brainer buy for someone like me who's fixated on recreating these runway looks. But my research didn't stop there. I've since spent hours hunting down the best pairs to shop and I'm pleased to report that I've sourced 17 pairs for you here.

On the Runways

Proenza Schouler debuted a pair of shiny metallic trousers on their fall 2023 runway just last month during NYFW and I haven't quite been the same since. Metallics can easily feel intimidating and yet the down-to-earth styling with a tailored coat and ankle boots was surprisingly approachable and, dare I say, easy.

Metallic pants popped up at Coach this season, too, where they were married to shiny shearling-lined jackets and accessorized with bright-pink accents.

The '80s glam that defines Isabel Marant was as present as ever this season. The brand showed a menswear look consisting of slouchy silver jeans and a metallic-thread sweater that I'm praying they produce in a womenswear-friendly size range, too.

Another designer on board is Gabriela Hearst. Her fall collection features a pair of metallic jeans that peek out from underneath a long dress coat. It proved that even just a sliver of shiny fabric is enough to make an impact.

Even though the fall collections were heavy on the metallics, the theme was already starting to percolate for spring 2023. Here, Isabel Marant's summer-friendly idea involves silver cargo trousers and a delicate strapless top.

The runways presented a united front on how to wear the silver jeans trend, aka with classic pieces in neutral tones. Whether it's a blazer, coat, or simple top, styling them with our everyday wardrobe foundations is the way to go.

On the Fashion Set

My colleague Sierra just wore silver jeans with a blue denim jacket, and now I'm officially inspired to do the same.

A fun graphic tee and layers of jewelry is an easy way to bring down the disco-looking jeans into the daytime.

This trend is made for a night out. Wear the jeans with a black blazer, bodysuit, and embellished pumps to really let them have their moment.

Of course, if you're feeling especially bold, a full-on metallic-coated Canadian tux is always an option.

I wouldn't have thought to wear them with ballet flats and a woven bag, but something about this contrast just works.

A second qualifier is that, like a pair of blue jeans, it can be worn with damn near anything—not just traditional neutrals like black, white, navy, brown, camel, and cream.

The vibe is it goes with nothing and, therefore goes with everything—an anecdote to the mentality that you don’t want to invest in certain statement pieces because you supposedly can’t wear them on repeat. Animal print is a good example from seasons past. Once the Scary Spice cliché of gaudiness and flamboyance, it now feels highly mix-and-matchable. Great news if you live in the real world and have a ton of shit to carry around—there’s no shortage of reasonably priced metallic totes that will make schlepping around with your laptop and gym gear just a little bit better.

FOOTWEAR

As someone who has repeatedly refused to part with the gold Gucci slip-on loafers I spent my entire savings on in 2016, I am thrilled to see a slew of metallic shoe styles on offer. I wrote a story recently about my capsule of fall footwear, which was only short a pair of statement flats—so, as you might have guessed, this is where I’m buying in. These St. Agni slingbacks are haunting me as they sell out (as are Proenza Schouler’s ankle boots, as usual), but it's this Jeffrey Campbell pair (that also comes in gold) and New Balance silver sneakers that are currently sitting in my Nordstrom cart.

APPAREL

Admittedly, foil-look leather jackets aren’t for everybody, but there’s still plenty of room to play. As much as I’m really into this maxi-skirt situation, a metallic layer peeping out from beneath a blazer is a chiller option. That being said, silver trousers are definitely on offer everywhere I look, and (as a new neutral) they’d like you to throw them on with as little thought as you give to donning your 501s.

ACCESSORIES

If you’re just looking to dip your toe into metallics, there are so many good belts floating around—I’m also picking up on silver gloves as an item to get ahead of for winter. Even more low-key: card holders and coin wallets, which are also excellent gifts if you’re already mentally making a list for the holidays. At more of a white-elephant price point, I love this Baggu tote or a pair of subtly sparkly socks.

Like many things in fashion right now, I suppose you can blame (or thank) the return of metallics on Gen Z and their collective interest in all things Y2K. "You can literally get away with wearing them to nearly any occasion," Wallace says of the sneakers. The trick here is how you balance the look head-to-toe. A fancy dress, bag, and earrings are balanced out with the gold sneaks and messy updo.

WORK WARRIOR

Sneakers are not to be shied away from at the office—just be sure to keep the rest of your look a bit more tailored. A longer skirt and higher neckline say, I take my job seriously, while the canary hue and on-trend polka dots say, but did you know I'm also a hoot?

"I could have easily worn this outfit with heels, but the Keds give my look a more effortless street style feel," says Wallace. Best of all, when a co-worker asks you to get a drink after-hours, you can say yes without having to worry about your shoes.

RAPID-FIRE QUESTIONS WITH JILL:

My favorite way to wear sneakers is: "With simple floral dresses or long pants. A great way to dress them up is adding sheer ankle socks."

The secret to pulling off sneakers with any outfit is: "Don't think about it too hard. The beauty of sneakers is the effortlessness."

Since Australia is always slightly behind the rest of the fashion world, I've been eyeing winter street style images for at least six months now. Gilda Ambrosio and Giorgia Tordini have been right at the forefront of my Pinterest boards and have almost taken over my French style pins with their bold Italian looks. And since I grew up in Queensland, I may be more used to winters spent at the beach wearing shorts, but I'm a cold-weather girl at heart.
