This May 9–17, Who What Wear Australia presented its third annual Street Style Awards, #TheStreeties, honouring the tastemakers and industry insiders whose style sets the tone and influences the world of fashion today. 

Fashion Week Australia was different this year, there's no doubt about it. While the location was the same and the shows were just as breathtaking, the usual chaos and flurry outside Sydney's Carriageworks felt like it was lacking.

Maybe it's because there were a few notable faces missing. The Australian street style stars we've come to know and love—think Margaret Zhang, Zanita Whittington, and Nicole Warne— unfortunately weren't in Sydney this year. But it's not all bad news—their absence made way for a crop of new and exciting women to steal the spotlight. 

Team Who What Wear Australia was on site at Carriageworks for the entire week to scout out the newest street style trends, and keep an eye out for our next Rising Street Style Star for #TheStreeties. We were looking for girls whose personality shined through their outfit; who weren't afraid to take risks or dare to be different. This doesn't mean simply wearing the latest trend or coolest brand (although you will find some epic Chanel sneakers and a Chloé suit below), but owning your personal style.

While we were initially looking for one rising star, we found five, and we see no reason to keep them all from you. These women all work within different facets of the fashion industry—and each has a different take on what style means to them.

You might already be one of Jiawa Liu's 200,000 followers on her Instagram account @beigerenegade. Liu's unexpected outfit combinations have garnered her international attention, and she now splits her time between Paris and Sydney, fulfilling briefs from Net-A-Porter and Myer. Whenever we spotted Liu at Fashion Week, she was surrounded by photographers all wanting to capture her eclectic style. 

What does fashion mean to you?

These days I live and breathe fashion. It’s not just about how I dress, but exploring different concepts and ideas. What excites me is seeking out inspiration broadly, fashion-related or otherwise, and using these to feed the imagery I present to my audience. It’s human nature to make it a big part of daily life, but there should be a limit to what we sacrifice in pursuit of it. 

How did your career in fashion begin?

I never thought I would have any kind of career in fashion! I was a lawyer in Canberra, and I started posting my daily looks online just as an outlet. As I tried to step up the quality of my content, I gathered various creative skills and experience. These now help me pursue my current work as a freelance digital creative.

How would you describe your personal style?

Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday crossed with Dick Tracy if he was a Matrix character.

Ella Jane is currently the content producer at TOMBOY Beauty with an obvious passion for both beauty and style. At Fashion Week Australia we saw her shooting editorial images backstage and moments later deep in her laptop pulling together stories for the site. Her edgy style sets her apart from the crowd, but it's when her nice-girl warmth shines through, that makes for magic.

What attracted you to a career in fashion?

I have always been attracted to the energy that comes with wearing something you feel really good in, and the air of fantasy and desire the industry can foster. I think the idea of creating a story through clothes is just really fun, as long as it’s not taken too seriously.

I started out by taking photos. I travelled around Europe and America for a year, I met my best friend who is a model, and I just took a lot of photos of her and our friends doing whatever we were doing. Then I met my editor and founder of TOMBOY Beauty, Chloe Brinklow, when we were both in Paris. I took some BTS photos on a shoot and she really liked my work, so she hired me.

How would you describe your personal style?

I just try to not look like I take myself too seriously. I try to find a balance between feeling polished, but not looking ‘done’. I’m still exploring what works best, but experimenting with different silhouettes is always more fun than confining yourself to one style. And if everything ends up in the toilet, I’m still very loyal to a good pair of Levis and an old T-shirt, as basic as that sounds.

Is fashion a big part of your everyday life? 

I think style is more important to me than fashion. The industry could completely crumble, and people would 100% still find a way to be stylish. Some of the most stylish people I know don’t care about brands or trends or who is sending PVC down the runway this season—it’s just about attitude and feeling. I would love for us to make a more conscious effort to move away from fast fashion, but there are a lot of articles that can explain why far better than I can in this interview.

How do you plan your outfits?

I don’t anymore. I used to be a big ‘night before’ planner, but at the moment it’s just based on a number of variables like the rest of the population: the weather, what I’m doing that day, if I can be bothered to steam/iron... My only non-variable is that I want to be comfortable and feel like me, unless the garment is too good for either, then I just throw caution to the wind and cross my fingers I don't look like an asshole.

Bella Thomas is that girl you've always wanted to be. Her natural beauty is what first grabbed our eye, but she's also a true creative with a quiet confidence. When we shot Bella for this feature, she was mixing Céline slides with a phone pouch she picked up at a market in NYC, and was about to head to the library to work on her site She Be The Sound. How's that for dream life?

How did you start out in the fashion industry?

I always wanted to be an ocean biologist—I then realised I had to be good at chemistry so I crossed this off the list very, very quickly. I soon found myself working for a Sydney-based stylist and my eyes were opened to high end fashion houses like Chanel and Monolo Blahnik. From there I started to make use of social media by tying in both fashion and graphic design… I guess it just kind of went from there! 

How would you describe your personal style?

I’m generally laid-back and classic. I do love to always style in something a bit more fun and crazy. There are some days though when I just throw on every colour, cut and piece of jewellery I own and somehow it finds its form and becomes an outfit. 

How important is fashion to you?

I love how Leandra from Man Repeller puts it: "You can take the industry seriously, and you can respect the industry, but that doesn’t mean you have to take yourself seriously." I certainly don't take myself very seriously, but I have fallen in love with the industry and I respect it so much. When I was younger I was never confident to wear what I truly wanted to, I was worried what others would think or say. It is now part of my everyday life and has given me a confidence to be who I am.

Nichhia Wippell is a styling assistant to some of the biggest players in the fashion industry (we're talking Karla Clarke and Nicole Warne). Right from her Chanel sneakers to her sparkly sheer top, her cool-girl style is effortless, and we just know she's the next name to keep an eye on in Sydney fashion.

What attracted you to a career in fashion and how did you start out?

I grew up on a farm, but I used to collect the fashion magazines available from the newsagency in our local town because I loved the editorials. I used to pull my favourite ones out and pin them on my bedroom wall. I moved to Sydney when I finished school, and interned at Harper's BAZAAR Australia for just over a year and it all started from there.

If you’re ever in a creative slump, where do you look for inspiration?

Arthur Elgort editorials from the late '80s and '90s, Jill Sander campaigns from the '90s, Vogue Paris from the '90s... Basically, the '90s.

How important is fashion to your everyday life?

I work full time in the industry, so it's a very big part of my every day life. I love that the fashion industry brings so many creative people together, and although each person has a very different taste and different ideas about what they think is beautiful, everyone can always appreciate the creative process and recognise the beauty of the final product.

Based in New Zealand, Aki Ang is one of those women who truly has fun with fashion. She isn't afraid to take a risk or pair pieces together that wouldn't conventionally be expected—and that's just what makes her style so interesting. We found her at Fashion Week Australia with camera in hand, taking pictures for her site The Sleek Avenue.

What attracted you to a career in fashion and how did you start out?

I was offered a fashion art director job in Singapore seven years ago, and fashion has since became a passion for me. In 2016, I started an Instagram page and blog using myself as both model and photographer (which was the cheapest option).

If you’re ever in a creative slump, where do you look for inspiration?

I turn off my digital devices and go for a walk, discover new places, new alleyways. The funny thing is, ideas always come when you have cleared your mind, or at the moments that are least expected—in the shower, on the verge of falling asleep, when crossing the street, and always when you don't have access to your phone or pen and paper! 

What is your stance on fashion? Is it a big part of your everyday life? Is it important to you?

Fashion is about amplifying your personality. I'm a risk-taker and I like to have a bit of fun in everything I do, and I translate those attributes into what I wear. I don't 'do' fashion for only the pictures, or for special occasions—it shouldn't stop there. 

How do you plan your outfits?

I usually style a look based on how I feel that moment. If it takes too long, I'm just trying too hard.

Fashion Week Australia is undeniably an exciting time for those both in and outside the industry but depending on your relationship with fashion, everyone pays attention to different things during the shows. While some look to the runways for the season’s upcoming trends, and others like to imagine what pieces they might invest in when the new season rolls around, buyers have a particularly challenging job.

As a fashion buyer, a keen focus is required, as well as the ability to anticipate which trends will actually be noteworthy and which ones will quickly fizzle out. To say it takes a sharp eye would be an understatement, and we never fail to be impressed by the buyers who seem to get it right time and time again. To get a little insight, we reached out to Eva Galambos of the iconic Paddington-based boutique Parlour X.

As a tried-and-tested buyer, Galambos broke down her favourite shows for us, explaining exactly why these ones made her list. Taking note of her favourites, we’ve even pulled out a few similar pieces to shop below. All the looks were polished, tailored and considered but with edge. His use of knitwear was outstanding, even incorporating this onto the shoes. Last night, Camilla rounded out Fashion Week Australia with a closing show that was nothing short of astounding. From the flower-gilded set, to the flowy patterned garments, everything about the presentation worked together in a way that was truly memorable. The Japanese inspired designs paired with the fantastical atmosphere brought the collection to life in a dreamy fantasy land we couldn’t help but want to immerse ourselves in.

Along with the breathtaking detailing, hand emboirdery, woven jacquard, ribbons and patternwork Camilla is so well known for, the new collection also featured more tailored silhouettes that gave the brand’s signature style an updated feel. While the collection itself was undeniably inspiring, something else also caught our attention: The models. While runway models typically err on the side of late-teens to early-twenties, the Camilla show featured a wide range of ages, spanning multiple generations during the ephemeral presentation. Along with a few very young girls who made an appearance together, a number of well-known older models took to the runway as well including Emma Balfour, Sarah Jane Adams, and Lou Kenny.

In an industry that has for so long been notorious for its lack of inclusivity, to see new representation on the runways was a breath of fresh air. After all, fashion is for everyone, so the ways in which its presented should reflect that. Not only did this range of ages at the Camilla show speak to a more inclusive ideology within the brand, but it also highlighted the timelessness of design. By seeing the collection worn on women of multiple generations, it was easy to envision Camilla’s recently collection as something decidedly timeless.

While there is unquestionably still a long way to go in terms of visibility and diversity in fashion, even a small step in the right direction is worthy of applause. If nothing else, the portrayal of different generations made a powerful statement about the power of clothing and its prevalence throughout an entire lifetime—and we can’t imagine the show would have been better had the garments been presented any other way. Last night, I.AM.GIA presented its debut show at Fashion Week Australia. Having launched only a year ago, the brand has quickly become a celebrity favourite, known for its edgy and out there designs—and the latest collection definitely played up the bad girl-vibe. While the runway show was undeniably more risqué than other collections we’ve seen thus far, we can't say we were completely shocked. After all, it’s the brand’s wild aesthetic that helped it rise to fame in the first place.

While it may be difficult for most of us to imagine wearing the collection in real life, there is one person we can distinctly envision in it: Britney Spears circa 2000. A denim coordinated ensemble gave us flashbacks to Britney’s iconic red carpet moment with Justin Timberlake… and those pleated mini skirts? Straight out of the “Baby One More Time” music video. In fact, one of the looks even had us doing double takes: There’s no denying that that the two-piece leather coordinate is reminiscent of Brit’s 1999 MTV Video Music Awards getup. Earlier this week, there was one notable presentation that took Fashion Week Australia by storm. Set in a Parisian bistro, the Romance Was Born 2019 Resort show, in partnership with Etihad Airways, hearkened to an idealised 1930's City of Lights. The collection’s ornate designs, paired with the whimsical set and ethereal atmosphere made for a show we won’t soon forget. Posing by a large cut-out moon with stars hanging overhead, the models flaunted garments that sparkled and shone as they struck cheeky poses.

While the presentation was definitely unique compared with other runway presentations at Fashion Week Australia, it’s exactly what we would expect from Romance Was Born. With a commitment to establishing a relationship between fashion and art, the label has positioned itself in a uniquely creative space since its conception. The brand’s site put’s it best, stating that Romance Was Born creates, “clothing that is more than just a beautiful garment—they create immersive cultural experiences that provoke an emotional response.”

But how does a fashion line evoke a level of emotion akin to what an impressive painting or powerful film would? The answer is simple: Artistic collaboration. By collaborating with names like Disney, Marvel, Lego, May Gibbs, Linda Jackson, Jenny Kee, the Sydney Theatre Company and the National Gallery of Victoria, the clothing line has transcended far beyond the fashion space. In intermingling their expert design skills with the inspiration of artistic visionaries, the brand’s founders have created a place where its clothes can feel at once accessible and overtly unique—and the recent collection is no exception.

For the collection shown at Fashion Week Australia, The Australian reports that Romance Was Born worked with the Australian icon, Jenny Kee. By referring to the designer’s archive, Romance Was Born, reimagined some of her classic prints through a new lens—and the result was nothing short of astonishing. While fashion is undeniably an art-form itself, Romance Was Born reaffirms the notion that it does not exist within a vacuum. Though trends may come and go, showcasing and recognising laudable talent will remain impressive forever. Though Kee’s rise to fame may have been decades ago, this collaboration proves that an artistic vision can withstand the test of time, and even intermingle with more modern fashions. In embracing art as it does, Romance Was Born is carving out its own artistic history, and hope that it only continues to do so for years to come.

With Fashion Week Australia nearing its end for another year, the season’s major trends have become obvious, reappearing time and time again on and off the runways. So far, 2018 has been a year of bright, bold colours, but based on what we’ve seen throughout the week, things are about to get a lot more subdued.

More neutral-based, earthy tones were everywhere at Fashion Week Australia with three in particular standing out: moss green, sky blue, and chocolate brown. While we love the bright colours we’ve been seeing thus far, something about this more relaxed palette just feels so cool. Just in time for autumn, these hues not only make an elegant statement on their own, but also work extremely well paired together (as proven by Albus Lumen).

Fashion Week Australia is nearing its end, but never fear: The street style is still going strong. Looking back over the past week, one common theme rings true throughout. There’s a lot of up-and-coming fashion in our country—and that’s something we should all be proud of. While we obsessed over the new designers that emerged throughout the week, we simultaneously spotted amazing street style from newcomers as well.

Admittedly, there are specific people we’ve grown accustomed to looking out for as they’ve become known for their style… but it’s almost more exciting to see someone new on the scene, unexpectedly blowing everyone away with fresh new outfits. Throughout the week, we’ve been insistent that even those who weren’t attending the runway shows could still celebrate fashionably—and our readers have definitely proven it.

These style stars uploaded their best looks to Instagram with the hashtag #TheStreeties, leaving us feeling inspired by their amazing outfits. There’s no denying that the Karla Špetić presentation at Fashion Week Australia this year was a memorable one. Set directly across the street from Bondi Beach in a bright, sun-drenched room, the Resort 2019 collection was basically a seaside vacation in the form of a condensed runway show. In airy, light colours, the swimwear and gave off a dreamy summertime vibe, while uniquely-cut dresses made us wish it were just a little bit warmer.

Most notable however, was the styling of the collection along with a surprising, non-traditional material. A number of looks were layered with translucent outerwear, crafted from none other than your everyday bubble wrap: Not only a genius choice aesthetically speaking, but a also a powerful statement by the designer. “In this collection I have included some pieces made from plastic bubble wrap,” Špetić shared. “They won’t go into production, but I wanted to use them as a talking point for all the plastics that are destroying our oceans and precious marine life.”

Inspired by the 2016 documentary, “A Plastic Ocean”, Špetić used her presentation to highlight the environmental damage being done to our oceans, showcasing her designs as a means to open up dialogue about the issue.

Though the translucent bubble wrap outerwear crafted by the designer for the show felt fun visually, it carries a much more sombre tone when the meaning behind the concept is considered as well. Intermingled with the collection’s ocean blue hues, the plastic seems disruptive and shameful—especially with the show’s immediacy to Bondi Beach. With the ocean visible right outside the window, the presentation forced viewers to consider the impact we’re having, no matter how harsh the reality may be.

In addition to the bubble wrap garments, Špetić’s presentation drew attention to environmental awareness in other ways. What at first appeared to be a floral-printed gown, for example, revealed a recycle symbol pattern upon closer inspection. Additionally, the show was styled with environmentally-friendly jewellery crafted by Louise Olsen of Dinosaur Designs, an iconic Australian brand committed to minimising waste and reducing its impact on the environment.

All things considered, Špetić’s collection was astounding—and needless to say, the presentation was impactful. The powerful combination of the deeper meaning alongside the exquisitely crafted designs made for a memorable collection that truly means more than the sum of its parts. To see a local designer taking a stance for issues close to home is truly meaningful, and we can only hope that other designers begin to see their art as a means for change as well. Designers like Špetić are proving that even one fresh perspective can generate a larger discussion around difficult topics. As far as street style goes, the plethora of amazing looks we’ve seen is seemingly never-ending. It’s fair to say that Australian fashion insiders know how to capitalise on their personal style—whatever it may be.

While yesterday highlighted the best accessories we’ve spotted thus far, today we’re focusing on overall outfits for #TheStreeties. There’s no question that 2018 is a year full of boldness (think colours, patterns, and frills galore), but there is nonetheless something very impressive about a chic and refined getup. Compared to the rest of the world, Australia’s fashion can tend to be a little more laid-back (when compared to Milan, for example). So far, Fashion Week Australia has been more than living up to our expectations. From Camilla and Marc’s breathtaking opening show, to Albus Lumen’s unexpectedly dreamy chocolate hues, Australian designers are wowing us at this year’s Resort 19 presentations. And the show we’re currently recovering from? Macgraw.

While everything in the presentation was swoon-worthy, there was one subtle detail that caught our eyes: The shoes. Wearing little satin ballet flats, the models had us dreaming of walking in the comfy shoes ourselves. This May 9–17, Who What Wear Australia presents its third annual Street Style Awards, #TheStreeties, honouring the tastemakers and industry insiders whose style sets the tone and influences the world of fashion today. Last year, Chloe Hill was crowned the winner of the 2017 Street Style Awards for her ability to push boundaries with flair and colour. We can't wait to see what 2018 has in store. 

We’ve been scoping the street style at Fashion Week Australia, and so far so good. On Day 1 our major focus was styling, and we were nothing short of impressed. From simple styling tricks, to unique colour pairings, the styling from Day 1 was on point (extra brownie points for those who made an umbrella part of their lewk).

Fashion Week Australia kicked off this afternoon with Camilla and Marc opening the schedule. It's been five long years since Camilla and Marc's last fashion week show, and the label's highly anticipated return did not disappoint. From the incredible set that transported the audience to another planet, to the star-studded front row (we spotted everyone from Elsa Pataky, to Sylvia Jeffreys, and Carmen Hamilton), every element of the show set the tone for the week ahead. 

The brand turns 15 this year, and it made perfect sense to return to fashion week—right where it all began in 2003. So to get a little insight on the preparation that goes into it, we spoke to Camilla Freeman-Topper. The brand’s co-founder opened up about how the brand has evolved, and a whole lot more. Read on for the interview, and your first look at Camilla and Marc Resort 19. 

How does it feel to kick off Fashion Week Australia?

We’re all feeling hugely nostalgic. It’s been five years since our last Australian fashion week show, and we’re really looking forward to returning and opening the week. It’s also a big celebration moment for us—it’s our 15 year anniversary so it’s been a really beautiful time to stop, pause and appreciate how far we’ve come.

How has your brand grown since you first participated in fashion week? 

We’ve learnt a lot, we’ve grown a lot and as we’ve evolved personally, so has the business.

What was the inspiration behind this season’s collection?

Resort 19 explores what’s next—future—through the lens of powerful women throughout time that have shaped our notion of beauty. The show set we’ve created for the collection reflects the theme of boundlessness and a sense of boldness, embodying a new age female. One of vitality and strength—setting her own path for the future.

Reflection was also a strong theme throughout the design process. Not only the qualities reflected in the women who inspired us, but we found ourselves deep in reflection in our 15 year anniversary. A big part of that was appreciating our journey, our story, our Australian heritage and what we’ve learnt along the way. It is for this reason that the qualities of reflection—found in fabrications and rich textural detailing—form part of the collection and a big part of the show set.

In our 15th year, that notion of forward thinking also tied into so many aspects of this show—looking ahead at growth and the eternal, timeless qualities that will continue to inspire our design, our brand and the Camilla and Marc woman.

How do you draw from the collection when planning for the show?

The theme of the show is a creative process that starts with a strong creative brief. Every element of the collection—from the clothing to the production and set —starts with one creative vision.

What’s the best part about prepping for a fashion show?

Working creatively with such a big and amazing team. I can’t express how much appreciation I feel for all the long hours my team have put in. We’ve had hundreds of people working on our show from the creative, design, production, music and communication teams.

What is one thing that people don’t realise goes into putting on a show like this?

It’s such a huge process—it’s a eight month lead up with over 400 people working on the show which lasts all of 15 minutes. There’s enormous effort that goes into providing a wonderful branded experience for the guests that attend the show, and an equal amount of energy that goes into the digital experience we create for customers to experience all around the world.

What are you most looking forward to at Fashion Week Australia this year?

Creating an amazing and immersive experience for our guests and celebrating with my team post show.

Are there any new designers you’re especially excited to see present?

We love to see and support all of the established and emerging Australian designers throughout Fashion Week Australia. Supporting the Australian fashion industry is something we are very passionate about.

Finally, Fashion Week Australia is here! And as excited as we are, we’ll admit it can feel like a whirlwind. With street style to scope, runway shows to glean inspiration from, and trend-spotting to do, there’s no denying that fashion weeks are busy times. However busy, though, Fashion Week Australia provides us with a special opportunity to showcase our country’s style and speak to industry insiders for their perspective.

So to kick off the week, we spoke with Lisa Aiken, Net-a-Porter’s fashion director, to share with us how she’s feeling about Fashion Week Australia this year. From her favourite new Net-a-Porter brands to her A/W trend forecasting, Aiken provided some sage insight. Keep scrolling to read the full interview, below.

How has your personal style evolved since Fashion Week Australia 2017?

I am not sure it has, I still love the same designers, rely on denim heavily, generally stick to midi-lengths and always like the unexpected.

How far in advance do you start prepping your wardrobe for an international fashion week tour?

Unfortunately for my stress levels, I am very last minute. I have literally just finished packing for Sydney, and I travel tomorrow morning. I do have a few ideas of things I may want to wear ahead of time, but putting looks together always comes down to the night before.

How do you approach dressing for a different city?

Aside from the weather, I am not sure I change my approach. As the fashion weeks go by you do notice that New York is more relaxed, London edgier and creative, Milan is usually quite bold and colourful and then Paris is super-chic, I am sure that does influence me subliminally.

What are some new Net-a-Porter brands you’re shopping at the moment?

Currently I am obsessed with Nanushka, a young contemporary brand based in Budapest. The entire collection just has such a refreshingly cool, laid-back attitude. And the vegan leather is incredible. I actually have 3 Nanushka outfits in my suitcase for Australian Fashion Week. In the footwear world By Far and Neous are two of my favourite brands for rewriting the rule book, both brands have a modern approach to the mid-heel, which feels very right at the moment. And when it comes to finishing touches, Meadowlark and Laura Lombardi both create statement jewellery with an edge.

Can you help us with a bit of trend forecasting? What should we be investing in now for Australian winter?

Tailoring is going to continue to be really important into next season, and is great for those transitional months. There is a lot of really beautiful colour around either those interesting neutral shades of camel, mustard and burgundy or really pale pastel washes. The texture of next season is set to be gloss and patent, we have over 200 patent shoe styles coming on site. And finally animal print will make a pretty big return (not that it has ever truly disappeared),

What influences your personal style?

I am lucky to be surrounded by designers, stylists and buyers on a daily basis so generally I would say the people around me have the biggest impact on my style.

With Fashion Week Australia coming up next week, we can’t help but imagine what it will be like… What will the street style look like? Whose shows will blow us away this year? Which new designer will catch our attention? And along with all these thoughts swimming around in our heads, we also can’t help but wonder how Fashion Week Australia compares to other fashion weeks around the world.

Thankfully, we were able to reach out to fashion guru and INF / Network member Chloe Hill, who attended multiple fashion weeks this year for the inside scoop. To hear about how each fashion week differs, and which one is the best, keep scrolling to read the full Q&A.

Does each city’s fashion week feel different, or do they begin to all seem the same?

There are aspects of fashion week that remain unchanged city to city (the plain on-site show venues always feel as if you could be anywhere in the world), but the DNA of each city is very noticeable. From the people attending shows (serious minimalists in Sydney, or print-loving Milanese girls) to the designs shown on the runway, every city clearly stands out from the next.

Is there one fashion week in particular that stands out in your mind, or do you find that you gravitate more towards individual shows?

Without a doubt Milan. There is something so beautiful about the city and the people which shines through during fashion week. From taxi drivers to the sweets Nonnas on the tram, the whole city gets excited about fashion week. It’s a culture where they really take it seriously—it’s not frivolous, it’s a serious business and they care deeply about supporting it.

What is the excitement like surrounding fashion week in differing cities? Are some more enthusiastic than others? Are some more blasé?

Since New York is the first city in the circuit, there is a feeling of excitement surrounding the week. Everyone is fresh and ready for it!

After that, a lot of international editors skip London, so it has much more of a local feel and you really see the UK industry getting involved. I would say the enthusiasm is definitely still there.

Paris Fashion Week is such an institution and not such a novelty, so there’s more of an appreciation instead of excitement. Also everyone is so tired by the time it rolls around, so show-goers are quite mellow. Although, street style photographers are out in full force so that creates quite a manic atmosphere.

Milan is the one place where I feel there’s a genuine excitement, but maybe that’s just because I love it so much! I wish in Sydney there was more excitement surrounding Fashion Week Australia. Everyone gets way too serious when they should be having so much fun!

Do you think that fashion week street style varies from one city to the next?

No matter where you go, there is always a barrage of show-goers in the 'label of the moment'. On the last show circuit it was Balenciaga. Before that, everyone was wearing Vetements and Off White, and so on. That type of style remains the same around the world; but if you get past the people who are trying so hard and dig a little deeper, every city has amazing locals who have a style of their own that I feel represents the city. In Milan, there are so many amazing girls rocking Marni and Missoni like pros. In London, it is girls like Susie Bubble who really embrace emerging talent and actually wear their designs IRL. In Sydney, it’s the low key editors like Claudia Jukić and Monica Russell who pull off such beautiful, effortless outfits and I feel really stand out from the crowd.

When you were planning your outfits for different fashion weeks, did the location influence what you chose to wear?

To tell you the truth, it’s all about the weather! There is an element of dressing up a little more in Milan and in Paris where everyone is so chic. While in London and New York, a more casual outfit is fine. But overall, I’m just thinking about how many layers I’ll need to get through the day. Because I shoot backstage and sometimes on the street, I have to be practical.

What makes Fashion Week Australia different from the rest?

It feels fresh! There is so much new talent and only a handful of established designers, so the newbies have a chance to shine through. I love that!

Even though it’s (obviously) smaller than the big fashion weeks do you think that Fashion Week Australia still stands up to international cities in terms of design?

We don’t have big fashion houses like Gucci in Milan or Chanel in Paris, so of course we can't compare in that respect. But in terms of contemporary designers, we really stand out. Actually I have editors in all the different cities mention how much they love Australian designers. In Paris and London I’ve met so many Macgraw fans! And Lee Mathews is gaining a huge following overseas too. It’s really cool.

Did you attend Australian designers’ shows at other fashion weeks? What was that like?

Yes of course! Zimmermann is actually one of the biggest shows on the NYFW schedule. Everyone gets excited about it, and every street style photographer is outside. The production is next level: This season, they lined the entire show space with floral print, so it’s really cool to see what an influence they have. I always attend Dion Lee’s show too. He is so perfect for New York! His sleek designs feel so at home there. In fact, he’s a step ahead of most of the New York designers, in my opinion. They both make me so proud to be from this corner of the globe.

Being in other cities, could you get an idea of how the rest of the world considers Australian fashion?

Our designers are so highly regarded: There is such an excitement and an eagerness to find out about new labels from down under. Everyone I speak to perceives Australian fashion as fresh and innovative, which when they sit alongside international contemporary designers, is so true. Spending so much time overseas has really given me a new appreciation for our local talent.

Which fashion week did you enjoy most? Why?

You’ve probably already guessed… Milan! The labels are right up my alley, since I personally have such adoration for labels like Marco De Vincenzo and Vivetta. I also love their long-established brands such as Missoni and Marni. I feel so inspired and the content I leave with is so fun. Oh and PRADA. Need I say more?

What did you experience at an international Fashion Week that you hope to experience at Fashion Week Australia?

Locals representing local labels. I feel like girls in Sydney get swept up in wearing the latest international labels and forget what Fashion Week Australia is all about… supporting our local talent. So I’m interested to see what is happening outside the shows. I hope we can all make the most of this opportunity to show the world how beautiful our homegrown brands are!

There are a number of reasons why Fashion Week Australia is of major importance for the Australian fashion industry. In addition to showcasing our country’s best talent and giving current designers a platform to showcase their latest collections, it also gives emerging designers a chance to gain exposure on a local and international scale. 

Because Fashion Week is chock-full of industry insiders, what better place to generate buzz about the next noteworthy designers? After all, for those in the know, having a finger on the pulse of Australian fashion is essential in staying ahead of the game. 

Teneille Oakley, David Jones's womenswear buying manager shared that, "The fashion industry is forever changing and evolving and there is always hunger for newness. We have established relationships with amazing emerging designers at fashion week over the years and seen these grow into highly sought-after labels." This year, Oakley said she'll be keeping an eye on the "very talented" Thomas Puttick.

Lisa Aiken of Net-a-Porter shared similar sentiments. "You can’t underestimate Fashion Week as a platform for exposure," Aiken shared. This year, she was particularly interested by Anna Quan. "I’ve enjoyed watching Anna Quan develop as a designer from her first ever collection to an on-schedule show. It’s been an exciting development."

All things considered, every designer has to start somewhere, and a good amount of our country's finest have in fact used Fashion Week Australia as a platform to launch their careers. So without further ado, here are the up-and-coming names to know from fashion week this year.

Fashion Week Australia officially begins Sunday, but we’re already kicking off the celebrations with our annual street style awards, #TheStreeties. We’ve already highlighted some of the best international street style, and today we’re specifically zeroing in on what Aussie celebs have shown us over the past year.

Fashion Week Australia is here, and we can’t wait to see the batch of fresh talent cropping up from our country’s best designers. Though the digital age is begging the question of whether fashion shows are still relevant in this overly-saturated Instagram age, Fashion Week Australia provides a valuable opportunity for new designers to get their foot in the door.

In fact, Camilla and Marc, the brand kicking off the week this year had its debut at Fashion Week Australia back in 2003—and it’s not the only brand. Many of Australia’s most notable designers launched at the event, and that’s proof enough of the importance that events like this have in fostering local talent and creativity. In case you missed it, our street style awards #TheStreeties are back this year for Fashion Week Australia, and we can’t wait to see what great looks are yet to come. To get your creative juices flowing, and to kick off the awards, we are starting by calling out some of the best international street style spotted on our favourite local fashion girls.

From New York to Paris, some of our country’s most fashionable women have trotted the globe—and served some serious looks along the way. Because we are so far from the cities with major fashion weeks, it gives us peace of mind knowing that Australian women are representing our fashion industry worldwide, proving that we deserve our spot on the fashion map. If #MBFWA doesn’t already confirm that Australia knows fashion, the way that Australian women represent themselves at international fashion weeks sure does. Fashion Week Australia is just around the corner, and it goes without saying that we’re getting pretty excited. In addition to seeing what all the best Australian designers will be showcasing this season, there’s something else we’re looking forward to: The street style. If you followed along with our fashion week coverage last year (and the year before), you'll remember our street style awards, #TheStreeties—and the good news is, we’re bringing it back for 2018.

Each day of fashion week, we’ll be showcasing the best street style on Who What Wear Australia to celebrate the best that Australian fashion has to offer. Each day will cover a different category, such as “accessories” or “shoes”—so everyday is a new opportunity to shine sartorially.

If you don't live in Sydney, or won't be attending the fashion week shows in person, never fear. This year, we’re also extending participation in #TheStreeties to social media as well. If you wear a great outfit to celebrate fashion week, make sure to tag #TheStreeties in your Instagram post so that it can be considered for the street style awards. So ready or not, it’s time to start planning your outfits. We have a feeling this may be the most stylish year yet.

After keeping up with fashion month shows in New York, Paris, London, etc., we’re starting to get excited for our own here in Australia. Granted, it is still a while away (May 13-17, to be exact) but that doesn’t mean we’re not already anticipating what we’ll see at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Australia (MBFWA) this year.

As much as we love spotting the street style trends that other cities are experimenting with, Australian style is a little different. Being in a different hemisphere, with different seasons, it makes sense that we do things in our own way—and we can’t wait to see what designers have come up with for resort this season. While we will have to wait until the shows to be certain about which Australian trends are going to be big this upcoming year, we do at least know some of the names we can expect to see showing at MBFWA.

Today, the preliminary schedule has been released for fashion week—and it already has us buzzing. If the news that Camilla and Marc are kicking off the week wasn’t exciting enough to amp you up, the participation of these brands at Fashion Week Australia is sure to start inspiring some fashion week frenzy. Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia (MBFWA) is around the corner, and needless to say, we’re getting excited. As fun as it is to watch all the fashion weeks occurring around the globe, we can’t help but note that Australian style is a little different. Perhaps because of the opposing seasons, or just the distance, our style is unique—and we’re ready to see what that looks like in 2018 and beyond.

CAMILLA AND MARC has been announced as the 'Mercedes-Benz Presents' designer, meaning the 15-year old label will open Fashion Week Australia.

“We are thrilled to open Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia in 2018.” Camilla Freeman-Topper shares, “It was our platform to launch the brand in 2003 and we have enjoyed many highlights together.” Speaking from personal experience, Marc Freeman added that Fashion Week Australia is “a fantastic platform for young, up-and-coming and established designers to present their collections and amplify to a local and global audience.”

If the opening show is any indication of what we can expect of Fashion Week Australia, this seems like a good sign. CAMILLA AND MARC is undeniably a favourite when it comes to Australian labels, so hearing that they will kick off the fashion week seems fitting.

Though May might sound like it’s an eternity away, Fashion Week Australia will be here before we know it. Given this news, we’re anticipating it will be a good year for fashion in Australia. As Fashion Week Australia closes for another year, it's time to drill down on the micro trends we spotted on the street. To help, we reached out to an expert. Someone who really got up close to the best style of the week—street style photographer Sandra Semburg, who was on site snapping for Vogue Paris.

Post-fashion week, we quizzed Semburg on the biggest trends she spotted while shooting street style in Australia. "Romance—ribbons, ruffles, bows, and soft fabrics were spotted everywhere, from the runway to the street. The monochrome trend continues to be big. Black and white, clean lines, oversized white shirts with long sleeves as worn by Eleanor Pendleton.

"I spotted a lot of shirting, all paired with flared trousers or short skirts and often ankle boots with high heels. In full contrast to the many minimal looks, I also spotted a lot of fun colours, and fabric mix and matches. And finally, earthy neutrals were everywhere. Beautiful beige and brown tones were worn head to toe."

Fashion Week Australia taught us many things (like what happens in the 24 hours before a fashion show) but our biggest takeaway, when we're thinking about the trends, is deconstructed shirting. It's the one trend that won't go away, and will be sticking around right through to summer, too. 

Deconstructed shirting can come in many different forms—it's essentially just a shirt, worn differently and/or in a new way. It could be re-worked in the way it's sat on the body, or it could have an extra long sleeve, or cut-away neckline.

We first spotted the trend last year, with brands like Tibi and Strateas Carlucci leading the way, and we saw more than one designer embrace the trend at fashion week. Anna Quan, Albus Lumen, Bec & Bridge, and Michael Lo Sordo were amongst the mix.

Aside from the runway, the trend was everywhere on the street (I even dabbled on day two with an oversized Topshop shirt). Are you convinced to try the trend?

In true fashion week style, every year needs at least one show that stands out for reasons other than just the beautiful clothes. Emerging designer Thomas Puttick presented his first fashion week collection at Fashion Week Australia, and didn't send any models down the runway. Instead, he invited a roster of inspiring women of all ages, and body shapes, to model the collection, and show how real women will wear his collection. 

Among the "models" who took to the runway were artist Dina Broadhurst, stylist Yvonne Tozzi, actor Eliza Nicolls, and charity founder Aminata Conteh-Biger. 

Puttick, who has worked and trained internationally and locally, with the likes of Alexander Wang, Helmut Lang, and Christopher Esber, is at the top of our list of "names to watch". His collection featured fluid shapes, soft silk separates, and delicate lace—all super wearable pieces we can imagine slipping into any modern Australian woman's wardrobe.

Fashion Week Australia is here, and Hansen and Gretel was one of my most anticipated shows of the week—and it delivered everything I hoped it would. The label launched in 2009, and has been quietly evolving since, opening its first flagship store in Sydney's Paddington in 2014. 

I recently went to the brand's A/W 17 press showings at the Adam Worling PR showroom, and was blown away by its most recent collection. It felt elevated, and I can sense a feeling of maturity in the collection. Soft silk pieces, intermixed with structured tailoring, and interesting details—like a cowl neckline or flared sleeve.

The Resort 18 collection, which just made its way down the runway at Fashion Week Australia, was equally elevated. I could actually imagine wearing every piece on a summer holiday—which is what the Resort collections are all about. We saw a collection full of prints—floral, mixed with leopard print and gingham—and fluid shapes that are easy to move in. There's something in here for everyone.

In case you were wondering what the next Dior "We Should All Be Feminists" T-shirt would be, we have some good news. We found it at Fashion Week Australia. KitX made a statement in its Resort 18 collection, with the word "Truth" splashed across the front of a sheer tee.

Now, more than ever, designers are using their voice and power to send a message. Was that Kit Willow's aim with her latest collection? We can't be too sure, but we do know that this top will be one women are lining up for.

Every year at Fashion Week Australia, we wait for that moment that sweeps us off our feet. The moment that we go to sleep dreaming about. Today it came via Michael Lo Sordo (and to be honest, we had an inkling it would).

The shapes were true to what we've come to expect from MLS—slouchy separates, and long lengths, but it was the fabric that we couldn't stop staring at. We'll have to get back to you on what it was exactly, but it looked like liquid velvet, glistening as the models walked down the runway.

Without sounding overly excited (never a cool fashion girl look), we have a feeling the Bec & Bridge collection presented at Fashion Week Australia was made specifically for Who What Wear Australia readers. And you're going to want to buy it all. 

We know you love French-girl style, and the latest collection from Bec & Bridge has taken on a Parisian feel—without the brand losing its signature vibe. The short and sexy dresses are still there, but mixed in with structured pantsuits, and a hint of influence from Saint Laurent and Isabel Marant.

Playful polka dots and off-the-shoulder ruffles teamed with leather separates, structured bodices, and slim cigarette pants, are the new formula to French-girl style. The colour palette was all cobalt blue, fire-engine red, and classic black and white.

Alice McCall has a knack for making "weird" pieces seem completely wearable. We're talking trend updates like oversized shoulders, and unexpected details like tassels. As soon as we took our seats for the Resort 18 collection presentation at Fashion Week Australia today, we knew we were in for a real show. The runway was transformed into a decadent floral carpet, which immediately transported us away from Sydney's Carriageworks (the official Fashion Week Australia venue), and into another world (Alice McCall always has one of the best sets at fashion week).

For Resort 18, McCall kept the collection playful, with feathers, brocade, and ruffles, but it was the introduction of a new shape—ruched sleeve details—that had us most excited. This "weird" trend has slowly been filtering through collections over the past few seasons. Why are we calling it weird? Well, it's the word non-fashion people normally associate with a new trend, but we have a feeling that's because we've seen it at Ellery, and now Alice McCall, it's sure to take off next season.
