After doing a deep dive into outfit inspiration, I noticed a few formulas that work every single time. Think dresses with playful accessories, smart layering pieces that make casual outfits feel intentional, and color combinations that feel fresh for the season. I know this is not the case for many, but I enjoyed the freedom and confidence that pregnancy allowed. My anxieties around my waist size fell by the wayside during the maternity period. Congratulations are in order for Rihanna and A$AP Rocky, who revealed that they are pregnant with their third child together just minutes before the Met Gala. The musician and beauty mogul arrived at The Carlyle ahead of the event, co-chaired by A$AP Rocky (as well as Lewis Hamilton, Colman Domingo, Pharrell Williams, and LeBron James), wearing none other than the same brand she famously rocked throughout her first pregnancy, Miu Miu (you know the crystal look).

This time around, she rocked a sporty two-piece skirt-and-pullover set from Miuccia Prada's F/W 25 collection, which debuted back in early March during Paris Fashion Week. With the gray co-ord, she carried a fur stole (embellished with a brooch) and wore matching gray knee-high socks and pumps as well as a black cloche hat.

The couple currently has two children together, RZA Athelston Mayers and Riot Rose, both of whom were announced in iconic fashions. The news of Rihanna's first pregnancy hit newsstands when she and A$AP Rocky held a photo shoot in Harlem in January 2022, with the "We Found Love" singer donning a hot-pink coat, low-rise jeans, and a belly chain. We found out about her second pregnancy on stage at the Super Bowl in February 2023, where she wore a custom red Loewe jumpsuit.

I understand it, of course, but still, she and her impeccable style are missed. Fortunately for anyone who saves pretty much every outfit the Rhode founder has worn in the last couple of years for later inspiration, that streak ended this weekend when she headed to New York City to celebrate the opening of her cult-favorite beauty brand's first-ever pop-up. Her first night out in the city saw Bieber go all out in a black Alessandra Rich catsuit made entirely of lace. It's been less than a full week since Sofia Richie Grainge and her husband Elliot Grainge announced in Vogue that they're expecting, but already, the 25-year-old mom-to-be has debuted two "maternity" looks, and both of them include a certain beloved winter staple: cashmere sweaters.

On Monday, Richie Grainge was spotted in Los Angeles wearing a tan-colored cashmere knit underneath a pair of army-green R13 overalls. To the combo, she added white flat shoes, tortoiseshell sunglasses, and a canvas-and-leather Ferragamo Hug bag. Ever since Keke Palmer announced her pregnancy mid-speech while hosting Saturday Night Live in December, we've been waiting patiently to find out how the Nope actress will approach maternity style. Congratulations are in order for Greta Gerwig! The screenwriter, director, and actress casually revealed her baby bump last week on the red carpet at the 13th annual Governors Awards in Los Angeles. Her flowy, floral gown by Carolina Herrera was perfect for a red carpet maternity look.

As a mom of two, I can attest to the fact that moms-to-be and new moms don’t have it easy when it comes to finding effortlessly chic maternity and postpartum outfits (especially pieces that can be worn well after having a baby). I completely acknowledge that it has 100% gotten better since my own mother and grandmother’s time, but there is no denying that there is room for improvement. It is for that very reason the editors at Who What Wear became instant fans of Bumpsuit. And we aren’t the only ones—fashion people and celebrities, including Chrissy Teigen, are regularly spotted in the cool pieces. The reason? In your opinion, what is it about Bumpsuit that has made it so popular?

I think empowering women to look good and feel good and show off their bodies in such a special time of their lives. We are introducing and redefining a new maternity uniform. Definitely our fabric! People absolutely love it. When I was pregnant, I couldn't find anything to wear that made me feel confident, comfortable, and chic at the same time. I also didn't want to be wasteful and buy a lot of clothing items that I would only wear once. I think so many women can relate to this feeling while they are pregnant and their bodies are constantly changing and there is so much discomfort involved. My goal was to create pieces that make women feel beautiful and sexy with fabrics and styles they could wear throughout their entire pregnancy and beyond, which is why I believe we receive so much positive feedback from across the globe. I see every message, review, and photo online, and it's the most incredible feeling to play a small part in helping so many look and feel their best with staple wardrobe pieces that can be worn when pregnant or not.

How is your fabric that soft? Tell me about the process of finding it. What makes it so soft yet able to shape?

It was important to me that all of our styles would be comfortable with no digging into our growing lady bumps and maintain their shape so that they could stretch gently and be worn postpartum. Our fabric is a brushed jersey, with a four-way stretch, making it very malleable and soft. It took a lot of trial and research to ensure we had the perfect match for our collections. With our Essentials, we use a super-soft four-way stretch fabric, and our new Summer Pops line features a lightweight, quick-dry fabric, which is amazing for sunny days. 

Is it just for pregnant women?

No. It's for ALL your lady bumps. Our styles are great for anyone and everyone. When I think about sustainability, this is a huge factor. You don’t have to buy maternity clothing for a short period in your life, that is thrown away—you can wear them at any stage in your life. They don't have any extra or loose material, so just follow our size guide, and you will quickly find yourself adding all types of styles and hues to your wardrobe. You can see from our new website the same styles on paper-thin models to plus-size models and heavily pregnant models. They are all wearing the same size. That’s how malleable the fabric is, no pinning, no tricks! I say, "A Bumpsuit a day," because I truly wear them for everything from working out to girls' night out. Tthey are great dressed up and dressed down and have an elevated, timeless feeling. 

Why did you decide to expand beyond your DTC site?

We never set out to go into the wholesale business. Our DTC is so strong, and our community is so loyal. Although, it wasn't a hard no. We were open to it but wanted to make sure our production line was smooth and silhouettes very perfected. I wanted to entertain partnerships that made sense for the brand. Hence we have expanded to a small yet specific handful of retail partnerships. Harrods is our newest and first physical retail presence. We are really excited to launch our first shop-in-shop with them. I was so honored when they approached us—this is the very first time they welcomed a maternity brand into the store. They are a legacy brand, so it was such an honor—I actually shed a tear. It makes me feel what we are doing is speaking to women on a new level, that we are redefining maternity fashion and really pioneering something. 

We have been focusing our energy on the core collection, working on our custom fabric and patterns to get everything perfect first. To be honest, it was a soft spot for me. I never found something that I felt confident buying in the maternity and postpartum space. I felt like the brands on offer were so "mumsy," and I didn't like the way I felt forced into a new me when I wanted to maintain the same "me" whilst becoming a mother. I don't know how to explain it, but everything just seemed to say, "You're pregnant, you're becoming a mum now, here is some uncool, butchered-looking clothing for you to buy… Oh and then it goes to waste after you have the baby." Most of the clothing also just seemed like a weird science project adding space for a bump. It was a stage that I felt was forced on me by marketing, and I wanted to dismiss it. Bumpsuit is for women who want to maintain their identity, that is strong and powerful, and who aren't afraid to "free the bump."

I felt selfish to keep it as DTC, I wanted women to feel this product and have it readily available to them. My whole thing, my purpose, is to empower women and unite us. Bumpsuit feels like a vessel for that. I want to open conversations between women all over the world, talk about things we don't get to talk about, feel the resonance, and feel the camaraderie. Since launching, we have had a lot of top retailers reaching out asking for wholesale. It's been great. 

Which piece is selling the fastest, and why do you think that is? 

Definitely a tie between The Kate and the support waist trainer. Oh, and the Cindy, in a close second. The waist trainer was the first piece of shapewear I added to the collection. I think it's different than all the Kardashian sequel (can I say that?) waist trainers, which are definitely a thing. This is simpler, more streamlined, and more comfortable, with no bulging bits or Velcro, etc. Just a really supportive compression band that is amazing for postpartum 24 to 48 hours after laboring. It [provides] amazing support when your body feels like Jell-o, needs grounding after birth, needs skeletal support to sit up and feed your new baby. It’s amazing even for people that want to use it for shapewear underneath looks. It's sculpting. It's also great for people who work desk jobs and need that support or people using it for fitness and working out or even a bad back. You can wear it to sleep in. It’s that comfortable but also gets the job done. You just have to try it to know why it's got five-star reviews and it’s always sold out.

What's next for Bumpsuit?

Wow, so much. We have some really exciting retail partnerships coming up. We are expanding the line into many other categories. We are breaking stereotypes and boundaries and beautifying this space with incredible products. Making mum life easier, cozier, and just better.

Rihanna’s maternity outfits have been a hot topic of late on the WhatsApp group I share with my closest friends. I can’t speak from experience—pregnancy isn’t something I’ve experienced first-hand—but almost all of my friends who have carried a child have told me that one thing they didn’t necessarily expect was how their changing shapes and self-image affected their personal style.

Each confided in me how they didn’t feel like themselves when it came to maternity dressing and subsequently defaulted to elastic-waistband jeans and printed wrap dresses. Let it be known there’s absolutely nothing wrong with elastic-waistband jeans and printed wrap dresses, but if those pieces don’t fit in with your pre-pregnancy aesthetic, I can understand how it might feel as though you’re losing part of your sartorial identity. This is likely why my friends and I share mutual love and respect for Rihanna’s maternity outfits.

Rihanna has been impressing us with her maternity outfits of late. 

"I just love how she’s dressing for herself… Serving up the sort of looks we would ordinarily expect from RiRi,” one of my pals succinctly summarised. Rihanna has never been one to conform to any so-called fashion "rules,” which makes her one of the most exciting celebrity dressers out there. And her maternity looks are peak RiRi. Wearing everything from a sheer black lace-trimmed négligée and vinyl knee boots to Dior’s A/W 22 show to the low-slung jeans and belly chains she chose to announce her news in, Rihanna has chosen maternity outfits consistent with her back-catalogue of directional and bold and looks. While I doubt my expecting friends will reach for sexy lingerie for their next trip to Tesco, I believe that Rihanna’s influence will inspire not just those in my inner circle but anyone grappling with pregnancy dressing to embrace a maternity style that’s more intrinsically "them.”

Style Notes: The glow is blinding in this Rihanna maternity outfit, featuring a sequin skirt, belly chain, and silver bra top. Her high ponytail and metallic makeup combination is nothing short of perfection. 

Style Notes: Comfort is key whether you’re expecting or not, and what could be comfier than a jersey bodysuit? This, evidently, is how Rihanna does onesies. 

Style Notes: For her most recent outing—to sit front row at Dior’s A/W 22 runway show, no less—Rihanna opted for a sheer babydoll négligée, thong, vinyl coat and knee boots. 

Style Notes: Monochromatic outfits—wearing the same shade top to toe—are favoured by the fashion pack. Rihanna’s apricot iteration, which she wore to Off-White’s A/W 22 show in Milan, is glowy and gorgeous. Featuring a leather Off-White minidress and a floor-length shearling camel coat plucked directly from the Diesel A/W 22 runway, this is a masterclass in monochrome dressing. 

Style Notes: Colour-pop faux fur is a huge trend right now, so naturally, Rihanna has already been wearing it for months. Here she is styling her outerwear, which she wore to Gucci’s earlier runway show (more on that below), pairing it with a sheer, monogrammed minidress from the brand. 

Style Notes: For Gucci’s A/W 22 show during Milan Fashion Week, Rihanna and A$AP Rocky turned out in impeccable style. For the occasion, Rihanna wore a black latex crop top, which she paired with a lilac coat from Gucci’s pre-fall 2022 collection. Completing the look was a pair of black trousers emblazoned with a red dragon down one leg, which came from the same collection. The finishing touch? A bedazzled headdress. 

Style Notes: For her first public appearance since announcing her pregnancy—a Fenty Beauty Universe event—Rihanna chose a metallic fringe set from The Attico.��Featuring a lime-green backless halter top and ombré silver-and-purple trousers, this was just the beginning of Rihanna’s experimental maternity outfits.

Style Notes: Still keeping her pregnancy private with the plan of announcing it in just a matter of days, Rihanna and A$AP Rocky stepped out together. Her legs may be on show, but in lieu of trousers, Rihanna tackled the chill in a weatherproof coat from Balenciaga, which she styled with Miu Miu ski gloves. 

Style Notes: Looking back, it’s easy to now see that Rihanna’s furry scarf—a vintage Prada scarf, no less—was probably used to distract from her baby bump, which, in a matter of days, she’d reveal to the world. 

Style Notes: Bright-orange faux fur, camouflage, and crystal heels? A perfect homage to Y2K fashion if there ever was one.

After debuting standout look after standout look throughout the last few weeks, from a furry Saint Laurent miniskirt to an oversize leather bomber by Prada, Rihanna brought out arguably her best outfit yet this weekend. But for once, it's not her style that we're celebrating.

On Monday, photos of the "Diamonds" singer, obtained by People, revealed that she is expecting her first child with rapper A$AP Rocky, who she's been reportedly seeing since 2020. The photos—which were taken in the rapper's hometown of Harlem by photographer Miles Diggs, or Diggzy—show Rihanna in an unbuttoned vintage Chanel jacket from the brand's F/W 96 collection that stylishly displayed her bump, which was adorned with a long, beaded necklace and a Chanel chain belt. She finished off the look with a pair of low-rise, distressed jeans and pumps, despite the literal blizzard taking place behind them. Casual.

Suffice to say, congratulations are in order for the parents-to-be. Here's to many (many) next-level maternity looks.

Getting knocked up can certainly be a time full of anxieties. When I first saw that positive pregnancy test, my life whirled before my eyes. I had so many worries about the birth day and about impending drastic body changes, and I had profound questions arise—like "Am I going to be a good parent?" and "Will I ever be able to smell food without throwing up again?" With such a laundry list of potential concerns, moms-to-be definitely do not need the additional stress of worrying about what to wear. However, for many pregnant women, that is, unfortunately, a constant issue throughout trimesters one through three.

As my ribs and hips widened for the baby and my belly got rounder, I struggled with feelings of insecurity in many of my tried-and-tested outfits. I wasn't excited anymore to get dressed up because nothing fit like it once had. After feeling sorry for myself for a couple of weeks, I decided that I needed to get outfits specifically for my oncoming maternity months. Once I did that, I started feeling comfortable in my own body once again. I felt excited to dress up and look cute! So for any moms-to-be who may be overwhelmed by the whole process like I was, here is a lovingly curated list of my maternity-approved options that will hopefully take just one of your many concerns away.

1. High-Waist Dresses

Dresses are an obvious choice in pregnancy. They are easy, cute, and comfy. They allow for the frequent urinations that pregnant moms are all too acquainted with yet still allow for a feeling of cuteness that sometimes seems hard to achieve in trimesters two and three. I've found that not all dresses work for pregnancy, though. It is super important to choose those with higher waistlines to allow for growth. Not to mention, these are dresses that take you through your pregnancy and can still be worn after your baby is Earth-side.

2. One-and-Done Overalls

These cult classics are perfect for more than just a day spent at the farm drinking cider or meeting friends for lunch. They are also the perfect option throughout pregnancy due to their roomy nature. Importantly, they don't require much thought, and one can throw them on with a cute top or sweater for styling. Comfort is key when pregnant, and I don't know a soul who would deny that overalls are the most comfortable denim option out there.

3. Luxe Loungewear

Let's be honest. For many pregnant women, it's about just getting through it without losing our minds. With all of the hormonal changes and the accompanying body/life changes, sometimes, we just need to be comfortable and able to move from laying down on the couch to running errands with ease. That's where luxe loungewear comes in. And trust me. When I am not in my overalls, I am living in my loungewear.

4. Outfit-Making Accessories

When pregnancy brain hits, the last thing we want to think about is putting a cute outfit together. That is totally okay and totally normal and totally something I do multiple times a week. When the brain fog just won't quit, it's best to keep it ridiculously easy. Throw on a stretchy T-shirt and some maternity jeans, and pair them with accessories or jewelry that you just don't take off. It's impossible to forget something that never left your body to begin with.

Here, she shares the key items that have kept her feeling and looking like herself during her pregnancy.

There’s so much that, as women, we don’t know about going into parenthood, especially in the early days of pregnancy. Something clearly overlooked, time and time again, by me too, is how much one’s self-image is literally tested for a whole nine months and longer. 

As I write this, I’ve had a whole week (maybe a couple of months) of assumptions and projections from literally everyone and their mum, sister, friend, colleague, partner, and, my gosh, it’s overwhelming! If you are pregnant or in the early stages of motherhood, I hope this column brings you some comfort and inspiration.

Being pregnant comes with a lot of pressure, and despite the smiles and serious attempts to continue as "normal" during every trimester (and yes, I am speaking about myself and from personal experience here), do not be fooled by external appearances that every day is a struggle from sleeping to literally getting out of bed (rolling in my case) and then the pressure of getting dressed. No, it’s not the end of the world. I take my mental health seriously, though, and for me, getting dressed and feeling good in this vessel of a pregnant body means a lot, not just during my pregnancy but also beyond. I want to be able to look back and think, Chloé, you really did try. You really took care of yourself and protected your identity.

Maybe that’s what it’s all about. Protecting the identity of 30+ years, which I have grafted for… what I am so proud of and completely in love with. Why should this and planning on loving this new part of my life—my tiny human and my new responsibilities and body—be mutually exclusive? I still need to be Chloé. I commit to this!

So this post is all about what I’ve discovered in the last eight months about dressing for my ever-changing body, using self-acceptance and stepping away from the pull (or lack thereof) of maternity fashion and instead choosing non-maternity fashion that works now and post-baby, which can help me stay true to me and you to you. 

1. FOOTWEAR, FIRST AND FOREMOST

Growing up, my friends and I had this thing. Whoever we met, especially guys, would be judged (sorry about that!) from the footwear upwards. As an adult, I often plan my outfits the other way around. That is unless it's an outfit featuring a pair of sneakers. I will always be a sneakerhead, but heavy pregnancy in the height of the summer season and sneakers aren't exactly a match made in Nike heaven (which is my idea of heaven).

I quickly realised that clothing itself isn’t my biggest issue being pregnant as much as footwear and overall looks are, even as a plus-size pregnant woman. What is an issue is swelling feet, so an absolute must-have is the Birkenstock or any chunky sandals that catch your eye or heart or represent pain relief. As soon as sneakers started becoming tight, I got myself into a pair of Birkenstocks. 

Another part of your essential footwear wardrobe is chunky, heeled and versatile sandals. I have these Perspex Zara sandals from 2020, which I will cherish forever. You can be pregnant and glam without experiencing pain just to look good. It’s definitely possible and definitely not a crime to put a little or a lot of effort into making yourself look—and therefore feel—good when pregnant.

2. DRESSES YOU CAN WEAR ON REPEAT

My pregnancy has spanned two years (hey, COVID-19) and is now in the height of its fourth season… yay, summer! I mean that sarcastically. London is practically burning as I pound into my keyboard with a tower fan circulating (or should I say recycling hot air?), but the upside is that I’m making every moment of this by wearing cute summer dresses, and that is what a summer pregnancy cannot take from me.

What do I look for in a summer dress, especially when pregnant? A style that, by its very nature, can be worn on repeat day to night is playful (hello, cut-outs!) and doesn’t cling but isn’t so floaty that it could reveal one's private parts in case of a sudden breeze! The chosen dress must make me look and feel cute or sexy (pick your character) and, most importantly, regardless of when it was purchased, always be on trend.

My DMs pop with every outfit uploaded to Instagram from both pregnant and non-pregnant women asking about my outfits, where I purchased them from and, sadly, that they didn't think they could "pull it off." If the past year has taught us anything, it's to buy and wear the dress. No buts. No hesitation. Go for it, and feel confident in your decision.

3. LEVELLED-UP PJ'S

It’s no surprise that comfort is not only practical but key for pregnancy-wear, fashion and life in general, but retail market intelligence platform Edited solidified my beliefs with recent stats from across the market, identifying increased attention on the sleep market over the past year, which has led to several retailers dedicating more of their assortment share to the category. Boden's sleepwear has grown from 0.3% to 2% and Loft's 1.3% to 5.1% YoY, and bathrobes have increased in popularity, equalling 12.3% of sleepwear at Madewell from 1.9% in 2020. Maybe the pandemic did it, but elevated sleepwear, which you can wear at home and outside (yes, the streets), breathes easily and functions in everyday life, especially on Zoom calls because, you know, pregnant people can still work and run entrepreneurial businesses—we don’t just stop. It’s all appropriate and totally relevant to redefining non-maternity, pregnancy fashion.

4. SUITING, BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT

Now, this is not the kind of suiting you were initially thinking of but instead more carefully curated separates and wardrobe essentials (or basics depending on who you are speaking to) that, when worn together, just create effortless magic. 

Depending on how you feel in this time of unprecedented body changes, you can go all out and purchase a whole new wardrobe based on your pre-body baby and plans for post-baby recovery, or you can shop smart. First, check what you have in your wardrobe, get your dejunking head firmly screwed on, and then digest. Colour-code what you have, and then top up. When I say suiting, what I really mean is matching, and by matching, anything can be thrown together. Two-pieces are my weakness, but don’t let that stop you. Try the following in the same colour or tonal palette: loose-fitted linen trousers and a bodysuit, a ribbed tank dress and matching blazer, a slip dress and textured cardigan, a shirt dress and statement shoes, sandals or boots (if swelling permits). The options are endless. Hot tip! Make linen a priority right now, and pay attention to how the garment is cut. Then, thank me later. 

Speaking from experience, being pregnant throughout summer is definitely not all that bad. When I was pregnant, I could get away with wearing super-lightweight and breezy dresses most days, and I didn't have a ton of bulky layers weighing me down. But the most comfortable place I wanted to be was in the water (it's much easier on the lower back and joints), so I was spending a lot more time in the pool or at the beach most weekends, which means I was living in comfy swimsuits whenever I got the chance.

In fact, during my last pregnancy, I was trying, testing, and collecting quite the comfy (and chic!) swimwear collection that was ideal for adjusting to my growing baby bump. Most are maternity swimsuits (that are catered to growing bellies), but I also have a number of non-maternity bikinis and one-pieces that are versatile and stretchy enough to wear throughout pregnancy and beyond.

Below, I wanted to share the chic swimsuits that carried me through my pregnancy during the summer. They're super comfortable and stylish, and a few have great customer reviews. If you want to still feel good in your own skin while navigating through this magical and arduous last few months of pregnancy, then you'll want to keep reading. I may not be able to send you a never-ending abundance of cool air your way, but these suits will ensure you look cool throughout your pregnancy.

1. Cache Coeur

Editor's Highlights: Cache Coeur is one of my favorite new finds for maternity swimwear. The French brand does terrific, quality pieces that make you look and feel comfortable, chic, and confident. While I wasn't quite sure how a cutout one-piece would look on me while pregnant, I'm so glad I went for it, as it's super flattering and feels so chic.

Editor's Highlights: My other favorite from the brand is this bold and vibrant floral-print one-piece. The neckline and straps look so good, and I get a ton of compliments when I wear it. Moreover, both suits are supportive and super comfortable.

2. Hunza G

Editor's Highlights: I've been a big fan of fashion set–favorite brand Hunza G even when I wasn't pregnant, but its one-size-fits-all stretchy seersucker bikinis and swimsuits are particularly great when you're expecting, as they comfortably fit around any bump size. While I love its neutral one-pieces, this bubblegum-pink bikini has been bringing me much joy this season.

3. Pez d'Or

Editor's Highlights: Barcelona-based brand Pez d'Or is a new favorite of mine for timeless, stylish, and flattering swimwear that fits beautifully. While the suit I'm wearing above is now sold out, the brand offers other styles that are ideal for wearing from the beginning of your pregnancy right until the end.

Editor's Highlights: I can't get over how impressed I am by Pez d'Or's maternity swimwear. They're such great quality and grow with your baby bump. (Bonus: They're available to shop at Nordstrom.)

4. Emma Mulholland on Holiday

Editor's Highlights: While this EM on Holiday one-piece is not a maternity suit, I loved the print, color, and silhouette, so I gambled that it would fit—which it did perfectly. The brand's swimwear is always fun and on-trend, but I'd recommend it for the earlier stages of pregnancy. Also, the style above is sold out, but there are plenty of other pretty suits worth purchasing.

5. ASOS Maternity

Editor's Highlights: For an affordable and trendy pick, you can't go wrong with shopping ASOS's maternity swimsuit offering. While the suit I'm wearing above is now sold out, there are other sleek '90s-inspired suits you can shop for.

6. Juillet

Editor's Highlights: I've spotted Juillet swimsuits on a few of my fellow editors and was thrilled to see the brand has a number of maternity-friendly styles that I can wear throughout my pregnancy and beyond. This eyelet bikini makes me feel angelic, and the elasticized ruffle hem allows for stretch as my body grows.

7. Hatch

Editor's Highlights: Hatch has such lovely suits that are perfect for summer. White the suit I'm wearing above is sold out, the brand offers other great sets!

8. A Pea in the Pod

Editor's Highlights: A Pea in the Pod has a nice selection of supportive maternity swimwear, which I'm finding particularly good at this later stage of pregnancy, as they have plenty of give. While the suit above I'm wearing is sold out, the brand has a few other ruffled versions, which are a chic touch.

9. Follow Suit

Editor's Highlights: I'm in love with the cool retro prints found on Follow Suit's pieces. While this one is not a maternity suit and is now sold out, the brand offers a variety of bikinis with drawstrings, which provide shape and coverage.

10. Capittana

Editor's Highlights: While it's not a maternity suit (and this floral version is now sold out), Capittana's one-pieces do work in the early stages of pregnancy, especially if you're looking for something alluring and chic to wear poolside. It's worth noting that the brand is sustainable, and its pieces are handmade by Peruvian artisans.

Unless spoken by Amy Poehler in a pink tracksuit, I dislike the term "cool mum." I have various issues with it, and for the sake of our collective sanity, I won't unpack it here. But the main problem I have with it is that it implies mums, as a rule, aren't cool. That the moment you become a mum, however that happens, you immediately start looking and behaving a certain way. Well, spoiler alert, you don't. Okay, sure, do I cry at adverts more? Yes. And am I unable to watch any show where a kid is in danger? Yes also. But when it comes to me as a person, who, let's face it, has always been a bit of a crier, then no, I haven't changed. I am still me. And that also extends to my wardrobe. 

Fashion, as I repeatedly say, isn't frivolous, and it is part of our personal identity. Just because I grew a person in my body doesn't automatically make me reach for dark clothing that doesn't show the mud my toddler gets on me at the park. Or that I must forsake wearing pretty dresses in case a sticky banana hand touches them. These things will happen, but does that mean you can't enjoy your wardrobe anymore and instead just wear utilitarian items that are all function over form? No, of course not. 

I reached out to three mums I follow on Instagram and whose style I love and asked them to give the best advice to any parent, really, on how not to lose your sense of personal style. There are some important words of wisdom that are not only great for fashion but also great for looking after yourself in general. I've also given some of my advice. "Getting dressed and doing my makeup at the start of each day set me up to feel in control and that my identity wasn't just being a mum."

"My style didn’t change at all when I became a mum. I was quite young when I had my first (26), and it didn’t really occur to me to change how I dressed! I think the only real change I made was investing in tops that made it easy to breastfeed. I didn’t wear much white or lighter colours for years, as it just wasn’t wise. As hard as I tried, there would always be some kind of stain on me by the end of the day!

"It’s such a shame that mums let themselves slip into an uninspired mindset. Getting dressed and doing my makeup at the start of each day set me up to feel in control and that my identity wasn’t just being a mum. You give so much, and it’s a long journey (mine are all teenagers now, and it’s still full-on!), so it’s important to invest in you.

"My best advice is to take it a day at a time, even an hour at a time if need be. It’s a roller coaster of emotion and a new level of giving of yourself that feels so tiring but is a very beautiful thing. And don’t compare yourself or your child to anyone. You’re the best mum your baby could have.”

"I still had the same wardrobe before and after both of my pregnancies. At the time and a lot now, I don’t wear one specific size but choose a size to how I like it to fit my body, so I had lots of loungewear and leggings to wear and oversize T-shirts, shirts and knits that saw me right through. I don't think I ever stopped wearing anything in particular.

"I don’t think there is a ‘mum’ style, only your own style. If you’re a mum, then I think that it should be separate to what you choose to wear. I don’t dress a certain way just because I am a mum. I find this one hard to answer, as I always felt like myself throughout.

"All I can say is that things change, and you will feel more yourself if you follow how you feel. Do what is good for you, and be flexible with yourself. Try not to compare.”

"Fashion and beauty are so important to our mental health. It's a type of self-care."

"I couldn’t get my head around the fact that people assumed you automatically wear frumpy clothes just because you grew a child. I was still me, I still had an obsession with clothes, and I still dressed in the same style, but I have to admit, I did swap out stilettos for chunky sandals and trainers quite early on. 

"I cracked a rib toward the end of my first pregnancy so couldn’t wear a bra! So I had to work out new ways to make it less obvious that I didn’t have a bra on. My sister got married when I was eight months pregnant and wanted everyone in white dresses. I sewed a giant bow over the bust on the dress so hopefully no one would notice I was braless. Hugely pregnant in a white dress with no bra was quite a difficult look to style! My style isn’t defined because I now have children, so although I’ve managed to use my stylist expertise to learn some hacks along the way (like about how my wardrobe will work when I’m in a hurry to get out the door with two kids), the basis of what I’m wearing is still the same as before.

"If I didn’t have kids, I’d still be in the same clothes 100%. And this is the reason we started @ThisIsMothership. When I had my daughter almost six years ago, there was nothing out there saying it was okay to wear the same clothes as in your pre-mum life. As soon as you fall pregnant, everyone tells you to buy maternity clothes and breastfeeding outfits, but this isn’t necessary at all. As superficial as it sounds, fashion and beauty are so important to our mental health. It’s a type of self-care. A well-put-together outfit, some tailoring and a red lip can take little effort but instantly lift your mood, and when you are in the depths of motherhood, a quick and easy mood booster is essential.”

"If you don't wear the pieces you love, you'll never wear the clothes that truly make you feel like you."

I was shocked when I had my son that my body didn’t return to how it was before. I didn’t expect it to do so immediately, but I thought six months after having him, it might have changed back. It took until I stopped breastfeeding (19 months) for me to really feel like my body was similar, and a lot of that is to do with genetics. Some people can bounce back; for others, it takes a bit of time to feel like themselves again, and I wish I’d known that sooner and been kinder to myself about that. 

But this impacted my personal style for sure. The major obstacle was that I had a much larger cup size, which meant tops I used to love wearing were no good. I had to find tops that were loose enough to fit my bigger chest but didn’t make me feel frumpy. I found decent tees (some great vintage ones) that still felt like my style, and paired them with some cool faux-leather trousers (which I sized up in) and floaty leopard-print culottes, which were ideal for warmer weather. Oh, and don’t forget to go for a bra fitting—it will make you feel so much better. 

Now, nearly three years on with a toddler, all of my old clothes fit, and I still refuse to compromise on my style. While plenty might shy away from wearing their favourite wardrobe items, if you don’t wear the pieces you love, you’ll never wear the clothes that truly make you feel like you. Whether it’s my favourite red cardigan, which has seen more than its fair share of yoghurt, or a white coat that can get a bit muddy, nearly everything is washable, and that’s the important thing to remember.

I'm at that stage of pregnancy where I could really do with some fresh inspiration in the sartorial department. Now that I'm halfway through (and no longer look like I've simply had a large lunch), I'm seeking some easy styling solutions and outfits that A) don't just consist of oversize T-shirts, B) are comfortable but not sloppy, and C) still make me feel like myself.

As you know, we love French-girl style over here at Who What Wear, so I decided to turn to some of our stylish French muses to see how they do maternity style and steal some of their maternity looks for myself.

One of the biggest things I've noticed is that French women settle into a style that is generally reminiscent of their pre-pregnancy aesthetic—not sacrificing their innate elegance and allure for the big bump. For the most part, they swap their beloved vintage jeans for stretchy knit dresses (and yes, leggings!) that embrace their bump and emphasize their silhouette rather than hide it beneath oversize clothes—wearing what makes them feel beautiful and comfortable while embracing the magic of an expanding body.

Below, I'm sharing a few French-girl maternity outfits that are inspiring me right now to get out of my oversize tees and into that effortlessly chic French aesthetic.

Jeanne Damas is the queen of mastering chic pregnancy style. One scroll through her Instagram, and you can see she favored stretchy dresses throughout her pregnancy, styling them with her go-to chic accessories and jackets. A stretchy crochet dress is a great option styled with chic boots and a trench or in the warmer months with stylish summer sandals.

French girls love knit dresses, so it's a natural choice when pregnant. A body-hugging and stretchy white ribbed knit dress is timeless and chic.

I love the idea of stretchy plissé pants (in lieu of jeans). They're super chic when paired with a black formfitting stretchy ribbed top.

Layering is a great option when it's not quite hot and not quite cold. I love the simple yet striking look of this oversize button-down–and–sweater-vest combo. It also looks seriously comfy. As always, a smattering of chic accessories pulls the look together and adds instant polish.

While we don't ordinarily see French girls sporting leggings very often, many admit to opting for a nice-quality pair during pregnancy to style with boots and sweaters, as seen on this look here. Chic boots are definitely a French-girl favorite to give their pregnancy style a little allure.

Next, the next viral French jewelry trend is here—and it's so cute. 

Emily Ratajkowski is now a new mom, but her great maternity style is definitely worth revisiting. She showed off her baby bump every chance she got, whether it was a G-string cutout dress or low-rise jeans with a crop top. And, of course, she also brought her signature pregnancy style to the beach. In an Instagram post, Ratajkowski wore the Inamorata George's Swimsuit ($160), which is from her own line. 

One-piece swimsuits sometimes get a bad rap for not being as cool as bikinis, but EmRata pretty much laid that myth to rest once and for all. Update, January 21, 2021: Four months after Gigi Hadid and Zayn Malik welcomed their first child, they've finally revealed the baby girl's name: Khai. When people say that hindsight is a wonderful thing, I think they're referring to maternity capsule wardrobes. While I have a 2-year-old, so some time has passed since I was pregnant, I still remember agonising over what to wear and buying pieces that I couldn't get much wear out of as my waistline expanded. (Sequin trousers, I'm looking at you.) I can tell you now with confidence that there are a few things you will probably regret buying when pregnant, and then there are pieces you'll wear way beyond pregnancy. But my one rule is pretty simple when it comes to a maternity wardrobe: Try to find pieces you'll be able to wear now and in the future sans bump. Also, it's worth bearing in mind that while a knitted dress (or three) are very useful when pregnant, they're not so handy if you're breastfeeding.

That said, investing in lots of easy-to-pull-up or -down tops, as well as a few pairs of trousers you can hold on to, is a good idea too. Despite what Instagram shows us, most people don't "bounce back" from having a baby, and it's worth noting that your wardrobe post-baby will probably be a mishmash of things you wore during pregnancy and before. With all of that in mind, I've given a list below of pieces that you'll wear during pregnancy, once your baby is born and even when they're little people wiping yoghurt all over you. 1. Knitted Dresses

I have two knitted dresses I still wear that you'd never know I wore during pregnancy. One is from Topshop and not maternity, and the other is a maternity-specific dress from ASOS.

2. Down Coat

Nine months is a long time, so chances are, at some point, you'll need a decent puffer coat. It is essential for any wardrobe, to be honest. 

3. Black Roll-Neck

If I had to pick out one item from my pregnancy wardrobe, then it would be the stretchy black roll-neck. I nabbed a Ganni one in the sale just as I was hitting my 18th week, and it has been brilliant. From covering my growing bump to layering under dresses during the winter, this isn't just a staple for your maternity wardrobe but for your "normal" wardrobe too. 

4. A Slip Skirt

I love a good midi skirt, and my favourite has to be a satin one. For a growing bump, find one with an elasticated waist. It's ideal for breastfeeding too. 

5. Comfortable Sandals

More power to you if you can wear heels during pregnancy, but if you feel like you just need something comfy and supportive, a pair of chunky sandals is ideal. It's worth getting them in a half size bigger as your feet can expand during pregnancy (and might even remain that size once you've given birth). 

6. Elasticated-Waist Trousers

Leggings are great and everything (especially towards then end), but they're not always good for making you feel your best. So then, look to more tailored joggers or elasticated-waist leather trousers. 

7. Oversized Blazer

I don't need to tell you that your body is going to change during pregnancy, and you'll probably start to notice that some of the clothes that fit you before no longer reach around the middle. My stellar blazer collection suddenly didn't want to fit, not just around the middle but around my arms too. With that in mind, it's worth investing in an oversize blazer. It'll fit you when pregnant and then be oversize when you're not. 

8. Non-Wire Bra

When you're pregnant, it's advised to wear bras that aren't underwired. I would always go to trusty M&S for a bra like this. It's also worth opting for something budget-friendly, as your bust size might change a lot during pregnancy and then again post-birth. 

9. Oversize Shirt

Whether the classic white or striped or anything else, the oversize shirt is your friend. Wear with leggings (and with chunky sandals) when pregnant and then belt when not.

10. Maternity Jeans

If you like jeans, then there's no escaping the fact that you'll want to invest in a decent pair, and yes, they will have to be maternity ones. I lived in Paige's maternity jeans, but there are some other brilliant options around.

The world has been (very) anxiously awaiting the official debut of Gigi Hadid's baby bump, and it was finally bestowed upon us this morning, in the most supermodel way possible. Previously, we'd just gotten a quick glimpse of it in this video, but now there's full photo shoot documentation, and it's stunning.

Hadid teamed up with some of the best creatives in the business (as one does when they're a supermodel) for the shoot, including fashion photography duo Luigi and Lango, stylist Gabriella Karefa-Johnson, and makeup artist Erin Parsons. The resulting shoot, which Hadid posted on her Instagram this morning, is undeniably ethereal, and involves lots of sheer layers of fabric draped over her bump to beautiful effect. The photos were taken a month ago, and it's predicted that she and Malik will become parents any day now (and the rumor is that it's a girl). When I was pregnant, my maternity leggings were on heavy rotation in my daily wardrobe. They were comfy, stretchy, supportive, and a good alternative (that I could actually wear out) to my husband’s cotton briefs (which is all I wanted to live in after work and on the weekends at home). But what I didn’t realize is that after I had my baby, I’d also benefit greatly from a supportive pair of control-top, compression leggings to see me through a time when my body was still changing immensely; when I didn’t want anything to irritate sensitive areas; and when I wanted a pant option—while in between sizes—that were flattering and comfortable (because there was no way I was attempting to put on a pair of jeans).

Yep, I guess I forgot to mention it until now—in my defense, there has been a lot going on—but I am, in fact, a whopping 27 weeks pregnant today, and my first order of business as a newly informed maternity shopper is to share my findings on the best clothes for working out in. While for me, "working out" has mostly consisted of biweekly yoga and daily brisk walks over the last five or so months, I think the fact that I’ve actually spent 90% of my time in athleticwear as of late makes up for my lack of actual activity. In short, trust me—I’ve spent a lot of time in this stuff.

On that note, below you’ll find the tops, bras, shorts, leggings, and even one bonus dress that I’ve personally tested out myself, are similar to pieces I own, or have the customer reviews to back them up. In some cases, it’s a combo of more than one qualifier, and in all cases, I stand by my findings! There came a point in my pregnancy (around the 16-week mark) where I could no longer get away with wearing just larger-size clothing and extra-flowy fabrics. As much as I thought I didn't need to buy maternity clothes (yep, super in denial for some reason!), when the zipper of my jeans could no longer stay up and even my largest dresses started to feel and look uncomfortable around my belly, I knew it was time to invest in some key maternity pieces that were comfortable, flattering, and practical enough to get me through the rest of my pregnancy. As a fashion editor working in an office filled to the brim with fashionable people, it was also very important that the maternity pieces I invested in looked notably chic. Luckily, with a lot of trying and testing, I found a handful of trusty brands that were the perfect balance of comfort and style.

Below, I'm sharing my favorites that got me through meetings, dinners, events, weekends, vacations, and casual days at home through my nine months.

H&M's maternity line is excellent for its trend-forward yet affordable basics that don't sacrifice on style. I bought several bras, dresses, and blouses and a swimsuit that were super comfortable yet chic enough to wear to work.

Christine Najjar Guida (pictured right) already has one little boy, so I'd consider her somewhat of a pro when it comes to pregnancy style and where to shop for maternity essentials. Jessica Zelvin Schwartz (pictured left) is due to have her girl any day now, so she, too, has had plenty of time (a full nine months, to be exact!) to learn how to dress her baby bump with both style and comfort in mind. Many of their recommendations are from some of the usual suspects, such as H&M, Shopbop, ASOS, Gap, Nordstrom, and Free People, and—exciting for those of us who are not with child—many are also not specifically maternity items.
