When I was in college, I was one of those annoying people who loved to spend entire days in the library, leaving only to fill up my reusable water bottle and make yet another Starbucks run. The act of studying, at least for subjects I actually liked, was oddly satisfying. So it shouldn't come as too much of a surprise that now that I have a job I love, I'd want to spend hours on end researching everything there is to know about it. 

My favorite subject? Cool brands that everyone, and I mean everyone, will want to be wearing in the months ahead. And after hours of thorough analysis—involving lots of Instagram, TikTok, runway, and street style stalking—I'm fairly confident that I've come up with this year's list of them. From the LVMH prize-winning designer who's already dressed Hailey Bieber and Zendaya in her stringy dresses to the Copenhagen-based label that every influencer is wearing right now, the brands ahead define what it means to be cool in 2022. 

London-based Albanian designer Nensi Dojaka founded her namesake label in 2017 while studying Central Saint Martins and has already made quite the name for herself in the industry. The winner of the 2021 LVMH Prize, Dojaka's signature stringy and sheer minidresses and bodysuits have already found their way onto influential characters ranging from Hailey Bieber and Zendaya to Camille Charrière.

In the last month, practically every big-time influencer has posted on Instagram wearing a piece from Copenhagen's The Garment, which specializes in seasonless pieces meant to build a wardrobe around. Founded by designer Charlotte Eskildsen and influencer Sophia Roe, The Garment specifically designs for Roe's minimalist aesthetic, sticking with neutral tones and tailored, wearable silhouettes.

Husband-and-wife duo Léa Dickely and Hung La came together after years of working at established labels like Céline, Balenciaga, and Alexander McQueen to found Kwaidan Editions in 2017, a label that draws both celebrities such as Kourtney and Kim Kardashian and the fashion set. Meant to challenge the societal boundaries set for women and the way they dress, the brand's most recent collections feature a mix of padded jersey, floral-printed sets, and rubberized trench coats and skirts.

Founded first as a menswear brand in 2014 by South London–based designer Grace Wales Bonner, Wales Bonner has since introduced womenswear to its offerings, not to mention a wildly popular collaboration with Adidas, as seen on Gigi and Bella Hadid as well as Dakota Johnson.

Sequins, feathers, and sheer fabrics are but a few of the specialties offered up by Marco Capaldo and Kikka Cavenati's London-based label 16Arlington. Knowing that, it's no wonder that stylists are champing at the bit to get their clients in pieces from the brand, with Hailey Bieber most recently wearing a skin-colored sequin 16Arlington dress to an event for her beauty brand Rhode and Kate Bosworth wearing a similar but aqua-blue style from the F/W 22 collection to a movie premiere.

Indian-British designer Supriya Lele has been rising the ranks on the London fashion scene ever since she founded her eponymous label in 2016, following the completion of her MA at the Royal College of Art. That said, her most recent collections, which feature bright colors and sheer, often patterned fabrics, have been especially noteworthy. Spotted recently on the likes of Emma Chamberlain and Bridgerton's Charithra Chandran, the London-based designer is one to know (and shop) moving forward.

If you want to know about cool New York City brands, the first one you should check out is Maryam Nassir Zadeh, the Lower East Side label that's been dressing chic downtowners (and beyond) ever since it launched in 2008. Known for its unique styling methods and wearable yet elevated basics, designer Nassir Zadeh's aesthetic is immediately recognizable—and trust me when I say you'll see it a lot.

Summer is in full swing, and as someone who lives in New York City, where walking is the primary mode of transportation, I'm definitely getting my steps in. It's not unusual for me to hit the 10,000-step threshold in a given day, but in peak summer right now, that's looking a lot more like 15k+ between press previews, meetings, happy hours, dinners, and everything in between that's filling up my calendar. On busy days like these, it's tempting to slip into my favorite sneakers and call it a day, but instead of reverting to them out of habit, I challenged myself to source heeled sandals that are chic and actually comfortable, and the results are in.

I don't know about you, but I've hardly experienced a single summer that didn't leave my feet beat up and blistered from a pair of ill-fitting shoes. Sand might be a natural pedicure, but even the whitest of beaches can't fix my toes after a summer of days spent stomping on concrete in four-inch heeled flip-flops. In order to find out which shoes—specifically heeled sandals—successfully combine style with comfort, I took a few buzzy pairs out for a true NYC test: 10,000 steps (or roughly five miles).

Nordstrom's shoe section is filled with plenty of gems, but despite all the solid options, I still think these $75 sandals are one of the best finds. Not only have they been one of our top-selling products this month, but Nordstrom shoppers also seem to love them as much as our editors do. The last time I looked at the product page, the retailer told me that 50 people were also viewing them. So of course, I had to see if they were really as good as everyone seems to think they are. My test for a good pair of shoes is whether or not I can wear them all day (and night) in NYC without having to hail a cab to get everywhere that I need to go.

First things first, the strap on top is padded, so it genuinely feels like a pillow for your feet. The shoes feature an adjustable Velcro strap (rejoice, my wide-foot friends!) and have a wide heel that provides plenty of support. After weeks of testing different heeled sandals, I was used to skinny straps that mark up my toes or skinny heels that I can't help but wobble in. These absolutely did not do either. In fact, I decided to wear them out to dinner and walked from my apartment in Gramercy Park to Tribeca in them. That's approximately 2.5 miles. If that's not proof enough that they're worth investing $75 in, what is?

Okay, Reformation, you really popped off with this one. I'd been clocking the brand's cool shoes ever since it launched into the category but had never had the chance to try them out myself until now. It may have taken me this long to get on board, but now that I've experienced them IRL, I'm never going back. I tried two pairs of the brand's heeled sandals, and while they both won me over aesthetically, it was the Enya Wedges that took the cake for comfort.

Wedges offer the most stability of any heels, and these were hardly any exception. Usually, a thick strap can make my feet feel vacuum sealed in, but this pair is made from the most buttery-soft leather, so that was simply not at all the case. I could have walked miles (and did) in the three-inch heels, but not only did they deliver in the comfort department, but the cutout heel shape also hit on a major 2023 shoe trend. So it's really a win-win.

If you're looking for wearable heels that strike just the right balance of cool, heeled flip-flops are it. Endorsed by best dressed A-listers like Kendall Jenner and Zoë Kravitz, this shoe style adds just the right amount of casual cool to your outfit. But because they have minimal straps, they can quickly get uncomfortable, which is why I beelined to Tamara Mellon, a brand known for making sneakily comfortable heels. Like many of Tamara Mellon's heels, the Luster 40 sandals feature a memory foam–like support layer I can only describe as cloudlike. Normally, heeled thongs start to become annoying after an hour or so, but I could have run a marathon in these despite their minimal straps.

I lost count of how many years it's been since I first decided I wanted a pair of Maryam Nassir Zadeh's cult-favorite Olympia wedges. I think I've been eyeing them for the better half of a decade, and no, I'm not exaggerating. The only issue is that they sell out faster than Wales Bonner Adidas and were always fairly out of my price range. This year, though, I finally decided to splurge on a pair when they were temporarily discounted during the Ssense sale and was downright shocked at how comfortable they are. I always figured that PVC shoes were miserable to walk in—something about the edges of the plastic just seemed akin to footwear torture—but I couldn't have been more wrong. I've walked far more than five miles in these and can say with 100% certainty that I've never owned more comfortable heeled sandals. I'm convinced it's the wedge heel, which is why I'm investing in many more wedge styles this season.

I'd heard from my co-workers about Paige's shoes and how, thanks to their signature cushioned insoles, they are surprisingly comfortable for long-term wear. And just like most of the fashion advice given to me by my fellow editors, they weren't wrong. These mules have a nearly four-inch heel, making them far taller than the sandals I most often frequent. Yet they were a breeze to walk in and climb stairs in, which I had to do a lot of at all the subway stations I visited during a long day of press previews.

When I was 13 years old, I inherited a massive glass heart pendant from my great-grandmother. At the time, it felt like I'd been given the Heart of the Ocean from The Titanic, so I treated it with the utmost care. Its fragility was so beautiful to me, and the thought of actually wearing it and breaking it in some clumsy teenagery way felt inevitable. That being said, it sat in its silky case for over a decade. Every so often, I'd peek inside waiting for the "right time" to wear it but never actually put it on.

Fast-forward to now and I've noticed that glass jewellery is set to be a major trend, as quite a few designers across fashion weeks and Instagram are playing with glass materials in their pieces. From Maryam Nassir Zadeh's NYFW show to London fashion favourite Alighieri, it seems as though fashion has returned to the concept of making heirloom fashion jewellery—pieces that demand to be cared for and looked after but are also meant to be worn. Finding this a rather niche style to be trending, I spoke to the founder one of my favourite e-commerce fashion sites, Cat Hocking of Joan, who confirms that she's been interested in these very collections for her new season buys. 

Hocking says that what appeals to her about glass when thinking of her jewellery buys "is that as well as being beautiful, [it] is also artisanal and it speaks to the slow fashion sensibility of Joan. It feels like designers are attracted to the versatility of the material and are enjoying experimenting."

It's true. With sustainability being one of the biggest themes in fashion right now, glass feels rather apt. It takes time to make and needs to be cared for, but that's what makes it so beautiful. Watching someone make blown glass is a mesmerising process, and each imperfection is what makes each piece unique. 

Just like oversized duvet coats might be trending as a means to cocoon us from the scary aspects of the state of the world, the sense of fragility that comes with wearing a glass piece also feels like a reflection of our current cultural and social climate. Our planet and our political structures both feel at risk, leaving us as people in the feeling, well, rather delicate. I recently bought a beautiful pair of blown glass transparent earrings from a local Toronto brand called Focus Group that the designer told me might break when exposed to different temperatures. Rather than finding it a nuisance, I empathise and wrap them carefully in cloth after each wear. I feel tender in the cool temperatures, so why shouldn't my earrings?

I should say that glass jewellery is actually trending again, as it's really been around and peppered through fashion histories for a very long time. It's been present since Ancient Egypt, through the Middle Ages, and, of course, most famously as Venetian glass, which is thought to have been made for over 1500 years. This year, designer Maryam Nassir Zadeh picked up the threads of that tradition and worked with Italian glassblower Gennaro Pepe, who captures "the spirit of the sea" in his one-of-a-kind creations.

The history of glass jewellery also evokes the golden era of Yves Saint Laurent. Loulou de la Falaise, the designer's muse and fashion accessories designer, often incorporated crystals and glass into her pieces that she designed for the brand, giving them a spot in haute couture and luxury ready-to-wear history.

With glass jewellery having such a rich and diverse history, this means that it is a trend you can also look to vintage to fulfil. Popular Instagram vintage curator Lucia Zolea often features Murano glass pieces in her collections. She often pairs them with cosy knits or sheer fabrics, proving that these delicate pieces work so well with contemporary outfit ideas. 

In our chat about contemporary glass jewellery pieces, Hocking also pointed to the versatility of the trend. She told me that she loves "the different expressions of it we see, from it being sculptural and elegant as shown by brands like Maryam Nassir Zadeh and Alexa de la Cruz, or Sandralexandra's more playful take on the material with her delicate fruit pieces." In collecting the pieces for this edit, I completely agree. There are also different shapes, colours and varying degrees of delicateness that glass jewellery comes in. They also work for any occasion (try on over a white tee through to festive parties). Dreamy!

A stylist I was once assisting told a very young me to be careful of looking up to fashion models. Underneath a beautiful frame and photogenic face, they don't always have a hold on style. Harsh, I know, but intriguing. This was probably one of the first distinctions I made between what it means to be 'fashionable' and what it means to have 'style'. Fast forward seven years later and I have somewhat discovered what personal style really means. On the outside, its a confidence boost and a form of communication without speaking. It can represent your interests, and the person you are. It’s about owning whatever style is 'you' and being unapologetic about it. Most importantly, it’s fun! It’s the reason I love to write, read, observe, and chose to pursue fashion as a career.

Dressing is very personal for me, and even though I have particular likes and pieces that I'm instinctively drawn to, I don't over-think what I wear. I would say my style stems from my personality—being intuitive, creative, sensitive and idealistic. I would describe it as equal parts feminine, vintage, and occasionally colourful. All while being quite a minimal consumer. 

Even though my dad would never think of himself as a stylish person, I see a lot of my interest of past decades of music and fashion stem from his stories. While the '70s lent a generous dose of cool with the era of disco and Farrah Fawcett vibes, it was the '60s that captured my dad’s heart, and as a result, mine. "It was a revolutionary time" he always says. There were many renditions of stories my dad would tell me—of really dressing up in the nice outfits to see a band or a film. I love that. Why don't we all do that today?

Over the last few years as my career has progressed, from fashion student, to intern, and now a junior, I could easily say it was a struggle to keep up with the 'trends' on a budget, but it was through putting myself on a shopping diet that I was able to discover my true style. 

Below are some lessons I've learned that I'll carry with me forever. You don't need a full bank account to be stylish or define your personal style, just a bit of creativity, curiosity, and shopping smart.

Trends

I'm all for trends! It's only through trial and error that I've discovered what works for me and what has become my signature look. It was only through working different trends, that I've been able to find what actually works for me every season, so I don't have to constantly update my wardrobe. Metallics, bold colours, buckle features, draping, and backless are some of the features I've always loved and will always have in my wardrobe. I like browsing through physical stores like Zara and department stores to see how visual merchandisers encapsulate collections and trends and make a judgement on whether it has lasting power.

Vintage

This is the part about shopping I love most now, but there was a time when I hated everything my small town retail stores had to offer and op shops where my only option. What I've learned from vintage shopping is that no matter what is trending right now, its had its time in history and was perhaps done better the first time around. The original trend, whether it be a bold shoulder blazer from the '80s or neon jewellery, can always be contrasted back with modern pieces. This is what really makes 'trend' dressing, authentic. The best part is, it won't break the bank.

Tailoring

The most important thing I took away from my fashion design course was the simple methods of tailoring. The hemming of dresses and skirts, cuffing jeans, adding darts, pleats and re-purposing pieces. It's the little adjustments that make all the difference. This taught me the importance of tailoring because when something fits your body perfectly, you never want to throw it away. Simple adjustments can be done at home and won't cost a cent.

There's certainly nothing new about borrowing from the boys, but men's white cotton shirts, button ups, sweaters, jackets will always have a place in your wardrobe. There's something about the effortless feel of an oversized fit that makes these pieces versatile through every season.

Style Icons

Lauren Hutton, Bianca Jagger and Jane Birkin are still talked about today and it's not just to do with their careers. Their style was defined in its own way which still makes it memorable and referenced today. Feeling inspired by these muses, old and new has been a way for me to see classic and trend pieces in a new light. It's fun getting a little lost searching for inspiration through old movies, books, and Pinterest. My biggest takeaway? These style icons all own signature pieces that make their style memorable. Another piece of advice given to a very young me was "be inspired by others but never follow", and I always remember that.

It was through stylish women like Kirstie Clements, Garance Dore, and Ilona Hamer that I learned the importance of building a wardrobes on basics; a white T-shirt, luxurious lingerie, and quality swimwear. An elegant watch, a red lipstick, and your signature fragrance. While I love the idea of maximalist dressing the way Leandra Medine, Caroline Issa, and fictional character Carrie Bradshaw so effortlessly encapsulate, there's also a sense of simplicity about dressing minimally and investing in the classics. Cost-per-wear is an important rule and something I am working towards!

Fact: There's nothing worse than boots that are too small. Whether the last size available was a bit too snug or your favorite pair no longer fits the way they used to, some sort of fix is necessary. Stretching leather boots might seem like a difficult feat, but in reality, there are simple steps to be taken to make your boots wearable for years to come.

So what's the trick to stretching leather? We talked to David Mesquita, vice president at Leather Spa, to find out. According to Mesquita, there are two routes you can take. First and foremost, you can always just drop off your leather boots at a local shoe-repair business where they will use a shoe-stretching machine. However, if you're feeling up to the challenge, there's a three-step at-home method that's certainly worth a try.

1. Use a shoe-stretching liquid to break in boots.

It's possible that all your leather boots need are a good breaking in. According to David, shoe-stretching liquid "helps to soften the material." While the material is wet, wear the boots around to break them in. One trick to ensure the exterior of your boots aren't damaged is to only spray the interior of the boots.

2. Try wooden stretchers combined with stretch spray.

If stretch spray alone doesn't do the trick, the next step is to combine the stretch spray with a shoe-stretcher tool. According to David, opt for a wooden shoe stretcher. In his experience they're proven to be stronger and more durable.

3. Leave stretchers in overnight.

Not only does leaving the stretching liquid and boot-stretchers in overnight give them time to work their magic, but the experts say it's actually best to try on your shoes in the morning. If the size still isn't to your liking, try the process again, adding a bit more pressure on the stretcher.

We all know the feeling: You walk out the door for a day on the go, only to find 20 minutes later that your choice of footwear just isn't going to cut it in the comfort department. Unfortunately, the pain and blisters aren't the only downsides to wearing uncomfortable shoes—there's the chance they could cause more long-lasting damage to your feet. To help you prevent this, we reached out to an expert to find out which shoes are the worst for foot health.

Frankly, we expected high heels to top the list, but podiatrist Robert Khorramian, MD provided a surprising response to our question. The worst offender? Ballet flats. Dr. Khorramian pointed out that with women's busy schedules, unstructured flats don't offer enough support. He noted that walking for long periods of time in ballet flats "causes metatarsalgia neuroma and plantar fasciitis," and also "destroys the fatty tissue underneath the feet," resulting in the ever so dreaded corns and calluses.

While Dr. Khorramian named ballet flats as the most common shoes to cause foot-related issues, he explained that other unsupportive or painful styles are also worth avoiding. "Flip-flops can cause a lot of injuries," he stated. "Pointy shoes can also cause corns and blisters because of the lack of circulation to the toes."

Some of the most unsupportive shoes for your feet include classic ballet flats, flip-flops, pointed shoes, and precarious heels. So what are the best ways to protect your feet? "Always buy shoes that are cushiony underneath the soles of the feet and have enough toe room," said Khorramian. And if you are planning to wear shoes with little support or high heels, he recommends carrying a larger bag where you can easily swap to comfortable shoes. "If you must wear heels, avoid wearing them while you’re driving, for long periods of time, and while walking."

You know those suede shoes you bought last summer? You wear them with everything from vintage Levi’s to floral summer dresses, and they have the scuff marks to prove it. But figuring out how to clean suede is a bit of a challenge. Unlike more forgiving materials like leather, it’s not as easy as wiping them off with a damp cloth.

For some professional tips, we turned to the experts at Fast and Best Shoe Repair, who shared their top tricks for cleaning suede the right way. They’re pros at all types of shoe repairs, but they were kind enough to also tell us how to take care of our shoes at home. There are a few different methods they recommend, but one of them involves a $0 trick using an item you probably already have in your house. The top tip the experts recommended would be to get your shoes protected with a water and stain protection spray before wearing them so the suede can keep its vibrancy and freshness.

TIP 2

In addition to protecting your shoes, Cadillac Suede Renew works really well to clean and refresh suede in three easy steps. First, brush the suede shoes to clean and surface dirt. Second, apply the spray, making sure it covers the whole shoe and let it dry for 15 to 20 minutes. Third, brush the suede again to bring back the hair, and you’re done.

TIP 3

If the shoes are really dirty, your best option is to either bring it to a trusted cobbler for repairs or you can pick up Angelus Angelus Easy Cleaner ($8). Pour 1/4 of the contents of the bottle into a bowl. Dip a nylon brush into the bowl, and start cleaning the shoes. Make sure to always brush toward the outside so you don’t leave any dirt behind. Once you completely wash the shoes, leave them to dry overnight. When the suede is dry, it will feel hard and stiff, so you will need to use a metallic brush to brush back the suede and make it soft again.

TIP 4

The last expert tip is to always have a nylon or soft brush in the house. Light water stains and dirt can be easily brushed out, and it doesn’t have to be complicated (plus, it doesn’t cost a thing!).

The "Sienna-ssance," as we like to call it, started about this time last year. Following a knockout turn in Miu Miu at the Golden Globes in 2015, Sienna Miller, in conjunction with her über-styist Kate Young, began to rewrite the fashion history books by fully shaking off her original bohemian image and crafting a new, exciting sartorial path.
