Back in 2006, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen started The Row with a simple mission: design the perfect white T-shirt. Cut to 20 years later, and The Row is hugely influential across several categories, including handbags, but it's never strayed far from its beginnings as an elevated basics brand. Lee's shirt has sheer sleeves and intentionally exposes red basting stitches, which tailors use to make temporary seams when altering garments. When a trend starts popping up, it’s an editor’s job to pick up on it, and that’s exactly what’s happening with croc-embossed bags right now. I first spotted one this season at a Clare V. press preview. As soon as I saw it, it felt like the perfect bag for fall, and I immediately wanted one.

Then, I noticed Hailey Bieber carrying the now-unreleased black croc-embossed Small Shopping Bag from Matthieu Blazy’s first Chanel collection. And when all of my colleagues started posting photos of the rare Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen sighting earlier this month, what were they both carrying? The Row’s black, croc-embossed bags, such as the Lady and the Agnes. That’s when it stopped feeling like a coincidence.

To add to the sightings, Kylie Jenner wore a blue croc-embossed Hermès Birkin to the NBA Eastern Conference Playoffs, then carried the same aforementioned Chanel bag as Bieber to another playoff game.

The exact shoes in question are called the Tyler, are made from a supple suede and retail for £930. However, as a fashion editor who lives in London can attest, it’s a shape you’ll more commonly find on finance bros working in Cannon Street or Canary Wharf. However, as cultural monuments like Succession have shown, these well-heeled corporate types aren’t immune to the pull of incredibly expensive but entirely inconspicuous clothing. Lest we forget that Kendall Roy was decked out in Brunello Cucinelli, Loro Piana and Jacques Marie Mage, even if he was wearing just a pair of navy trousers and a gilet.

But of course, the real standout of the evening is the array of looks that grace the red carpet. Serving as a proverbial runway, the granite front steps are elevated beyond disbelief, serving both a literal and figurative platform for the haute couture creations that exceed all expectations.

Attending the 2009 iteration, which adhered to the theme “The Model as Muse”, she proved the power that supermodels wield as the ultimate shapeshifter. As announced by VOGUE, the theme of the 2026 Met Gala is "Costume Art". As always, the theme is derived from the Costume Institute's spring exhibition. According to the centre's head curator, Andrew Bolton, the theme addresses “the centrality of the dressed body in the museum’s vast collection".

The museum reports that the exhibition will "pair garments with artworks to reveal the inherent relationship between clothing and the body". It continues, "from the formal to the conceptual, the aesthetic to the political, the individual to the universal, the illustrative to the symbolic, and the playful to the profound, these pairings are organised into a series of thematic body types that reflect their pervasiveness and endurance through time and cultures."

"There’s a growing desire for pieces that feel effortless and luxurious at once, and that’s translated into footwear that’s pared-back, considered and comfortable enough for all-day wear."

To me, this is best seen in The Row’s spring/summer 2024 collection. Months after Mary-Kate Olsen was pictured around Los Angeles risking the California cold in black leather slippers, a grey tracksuit, a trench coat and a navy scarf, she and her twin sister presented a more opulent take on the style by recontextualising hotel slippers into a cult buy. The message was clear: when you can invest in all matters of luxury goods, what’s more self-indulgent than slipping into something snug as a slipper?

McLaren echoes this sentiment. "There’s a softness to the way people are dressing now; a leaning into calm, unfussy silhouettes and pieces that feel grounded and personal. The slipper trend speaks to that desire for simplicity."

On the heels of The Row’s endorsement came a flood of celebrity co-signs; Jennifer Lawrence wearing suede slippers whilst out in Manhattan, Kendall Jenner arriving at a New York hotel ahead of the 2025 Met Gala in a pair costing £960. Other designers followed too, including a patent pair shown on Miu Miu’s autumn/winter 2024 runway.

But why now, five years after homebound fashion became de rigueur? "People are looking for wardrobe staples that don’t feel performative, that prioritise ease without sacrificing design integrity," McLaren tells me about why slippers are quickly becoming adopted by refined minimalists.

"[The slipper shoe trend] is understated," she continues. "There’s no excess, no embellishment—it’s about restraint. The slipper-style silhouette reflects a broader shift toward timelessness and subtle design codes, which align naturally with a more refined and pared-back aesthetic. A flat shoe, particularly one with thoughtful proportions and premium materials, can feel just as sophisticated as a heel; it’s about how it’s made, how it’s styled and how it fits into a modern, intelligent wardrobe."

On the latter, you don’t have to tell me twice to embrace the flat. Earlier this month, I was perusing a Zara Home store in Athens and came across the most delicious slipper. Ivory satin and trimmed with faux fur, it was like an invitation to prioritise cosiness. Turns out, relaxation is the ultimate extravagance, after all.

In the rarefied world of luxury handbags, the Hermès Birkin has long been considered the holy grail. Jane Birkin's original bag even fetched an astounding $10 million at a recent auction. The Hamptons season has officially started. This means that by 2 p.m. every Friday, New Yorkers begin heading "out East"—to the land of Round Swamp Farm, vibrant hydrangeas, and $75 workout sessions. Leading the fashion scene is Mary-Kate Olsen.

This week, the Bridgehampton resident and co-founder of The Row was seen clutching a brown paper bag and an Amex black card on a grocery run. While Olsen, who’s built her career on her chic style, made the bodega bag look cool, it was her outfit that caught our eye: FreeCity sweatpants and flip-flops.

When it comes to quiet luxury and dressing for that wealthy vibe, nobody does it better than Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. Long before they were the visionary designers behind The Row, they were establishing their own sense of personal style that they've hardly wavered from over nearly three decades of being in the public eye. Throughout the 2000s and 2010s, many of their most memorable looks were defined by a single silhouette: the caftan dress. Now that summer is here, I'm already starting to see more caftans pop up in the most stylish resort destinations, especially worn as swimsuit cover-ups. I'll go ahead and say it: Caftan dresses are easily the most rich-looking dress trend of summer 2025, and I, for one, will be getting on board.

I'll be emulating the Olsen twins and wearing a caftan dress this summer, and once you scroll through all the styling and shopping examples I've included below, I think you'll want to join me.

Picture this: The year is 1999; you just saw Ashley Olsen and Mary-Kate Olsen wearing matching Kate Spade Sam Bags complete with coordinating maxi skirts, cardigans, and choker necklaces to the Hollywood premiere of Anna and the King; and suddenly you don't just want but need one for yourself. In the mid to late '90s, it wasn't just a popular designer bag; it was arguably the designer bag, and everyone and their mother seemed to either own one or be shopping for one.

Released in 1993 and made from nylon with just a simple rectangular logo in black-and-white font, the Sam Bag helped launch the Kate Spade brand to much commercial success in the era. It became both an aspirational It bag spotted on celebrities like the Olsen sisters and Gwyneth Paltrow and an attainable piece of luxury that served as the first designer bag for many. "It perfectly captured the '90s aesthetic by embracing the minimalist fashion trend in a way that hadn't been seen before," notes Eva Erdmann, CEO and brand president of Kate Spade New York.

Now, the brand has rereleased the iconic handbag in its mini size in four spring-ready colors—black, white, vibrant yellow, and soft light blue—and at $158, the petite top-handle shape is one I can't help but want to shop in every color.

As an avid horseback rider, Mary-Kate Olsen knows that the combo is not only chic but functional for competitive show jumping. Do you ever wake up and just ask yourself, "What would the Olsen twins do?" I do regularly. This winter, I've found myself on a side of TikTok that also does the same. The current focus is on how Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen often head out with their hair effortlessly tucked into their neckline. Phoebe Philo is also known for this chic look.

Give us both twins at once, and our fashion minds (and wardrobes) are just about ready to go into overdrive. Today is one of those rare days. Next up, the shoe, jewelry, and bag trends you'll still want to wear in 20 years.

Living in New York City has definitely changed my perspective on footwear. While my go-to kitten heels and riding boots may be perfect for a late-night soirée or a Sunday brunch, most of the time, my step count is in the thousands, meaning my footwear is of utmost importance. 

As a 24-year-old, orthopedics shockingly aren't my first choice. While I'm willing to give up some comfort for stylish shoes, it wasn't until a late-night spiral into the archives of Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen that I discovered you could have both. Yes, the Full House twins and designer duo behind The Row have a favorite pair of walking sandals. Spoiler alert: It isn't their own. 

Behold Tevas. I had experimented a few times with the open-toe style during my days growing up on the Florida coast, but I buried them deep in my closet, thinking I wouldn't be able to make them work with my newfound city-girl wardrobe full of oversize blazers and palazzo pants during the warmer months. It wasn't until I saw them on Mary-Kate Olsen that I knew I could make them work. So when I was invited to fly across the country with Teva to live my best granola-girl life at Lake Tahoe for a week, I put them to the test.

After days of hiking, canoeing, sailing, and wine-tasting on the brand's annual Camp Teva retreat, I have to say I'm fully on board. Both Orignal Universal and platform styles are now integrated into my summer wardrobe.

While you'd think chunky hiking sandals don't exactly bode well when you're walking around SoHo, I've gotten so many compliments already. It feels like Teva is trying to transform itself and step outside the box with a slew of designer collaborations and elevated colorways that feel much more inclined to the fashion crowd over the camp-counselor one. Just this month, the California-based brand launched three styles in collaboration with Chloé, cementing itself once again as a footwear brand for the cool, edgy girl.

Over the last few years, the rise of "ugly" dad sandals has been on the move, with design houses and nature brands alike serving up fresh takes on the controversial style. While most quilted, lambskin versions of the chunky shoes can cost upwards of $2000 on the resale end, my trusted pair of Tevas begin only at $55, and platform and hiking versions cost only $20 more—a mere fraction of the highly lauded designer versions. Plus, you won't feel bad about any scuffs or lived-in marks you'll get from hiking a mountain top (or accidentally dragging your feet across a subway grate on your way to your local NYC smoothie shop). 

To be honest, it's probably better that the general population doesn't catch on quite yet to the best sandals I'll ever own in my lifetime. I'll gatekeep these shoes for as long as I can so I can continue to live my indie-girl fantasy alongside Chloë Sevigny— another Teva truther. If that isn't something to celebrate, I don't know what is.

Danielle Sherman has worn many hats throughout her career. For one, got her start in the fashion world at a young age. From taking classes at Jo-Ann Stores to sewing with Vogue patterns, Sherman has always loved working with her hands.

While learning to sew, she was also making jewelry and had a knack for sourcing rosary beads from flea markets and remaking them into necklaces. At the age of 16, Sherman launched her own line of leather accessories, which was funded by a small acting role she landed in The Parent Trap.

(Yes, *the* Parent Trap, starring Lindsay Lohan.)

Eventually, Sherman moved to New York City and enrolled at New York University. Upon graduation, Sherman worked for Tahari ASL and went on to co-found The Row with Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. After stints at Alexander Wang and EDUN, Sherman struck out on her own. During her time consulting was when Sherman was able to get in the headspace to get creative and figure out what she wanted to do next. 

That next thing? Relaunching her grandparent's high-end women’s tailored clothing, Sherman Field, as a fine jewelry label in 2019.

In the latest episode of Who What Wear With Hillary Kerr, Sherman shares how she went from co-founding The Row to launching her fine jewelry line, the investment pieces worth buying, and so much more.

You co-founded The Row with Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen. You've designed for Alexander Wang. You have worked for really important brands. I'm hoping that you can give our listeners a little bit of insight into your background.

I like to actually proceed the fashion background because I think so much of what I've been able to accomplish extends from how I was raised. Being born in Los Angeles, being raised by my mom, my father passed away when I was really young.

I've always been a very active child but also taking on a lot of responsibility. That being said, I always was also making things with my hands. I was taking classes at Jo-Ann Fabric when I was 12 years old. 

I was learning, sewing, getting McCall's patterns, Vogue patterns from very early on. Then at the same time, I was also making jewelry. I was sourcing rosary beads from flea markets and remaking, re-crafting them into necklaces. Even though I am Jewish and go by being Jewish, I would love working with rosary necklaces.

Then I had one year when I was an actor (not really—I was barely an actor). I auditioned for a Lindsay Lohan film, The Parent Trap. I landed a very small role and that role funded my first business when I was 16. It was a leather accessory business.

Eventually, I got a few meetings, and my bracelets, my leather cuffs were on the Dixie Chicks. From there, I went to NYU and was always interning for multiple places, but nothing fashion related. I just wanted to explore both my academics and also art and other things.

I felt like I grew up pretty early, but it just cemented just another chapter in my life of independence and figuring things out. From there, I had a brief paying job at Tahari ASL and then The Row. That was in 2005; I co-founded [it] with Mary Kate and Ashley. From there, I joined Alexander [Wang] [and] originally worked with him on [the] runway and then launched T for him as a design director for men's and women's. I was there for five and a half years. After Alex, I joined Edun.

It was incredible because from all the companies I've worked at—from domestic production all the way to doing things in Asia to doing things in Africa—it was incredible to explore new territory.

You had a very entrepreneurial side, given the fact that you were starting your own businesses and working at such a tender age. At what point did you start thinking about doing something for yourself? Specifically, why were you interested in thinking about jewelry and fine jewelry?

After I left Edun, our family moved to L.A. I had an infant at the time. The first thing I did was actually just open up a consulting company because I knew if I was going to help support the family and keep the creative juices flowing, I still need to be doing something.

I was consulting for PLS+T. It was a division of Theory in Japan. I was working for fast retailing. I had that, which was financially supporting this level of independence being here in L.A. and not having a full-time job. That was my first consulting gig.

While I was consulting, I then had the headspace [to] create something. Did I know is going to be jewelry? Not necessarily, but I knew I wanted to create something.

When I was thinking about all the things that I've done and maybe haven't pursued, I've always had a pension for heavy, kind of big, bold pieces. I've never found the pieces that I would want to wear.

That's where I kind of landed on jewelry. I feel like I had the headspace to have more creative thinking because I didn't have a full-time job.

Obviously, jewelry is very personal and unique and distinct to everyone who wears it, but there are some truths, as well. If someone was starting out and starting to build their collection and really wanted to invest in pieces from you, what would you suggest in terms of starting out?

Part of why we started the Column Chain—which is our entry price point necklace—is so [customers] can afford that piece along with a locket. That was the intention.

I want someone to be able to walk away spending under 15 or about $15,000 plus and have two pieces as opposed to just one. That was the intention behind that. It's an investment piece still, being the price point that it is, but that you could then in time purchase other pieces to wear along with it. 

I would rather save up for a whole year and buy one special piece than have multiple pieces of things that sure will not last and are trend-based.

The Oval Chain Link is to this day our best seller, best performer, because it's very intricate and the design behind it is something that people are excited about.

I think finding your link and finding your length are the two things I always start with people. So maybe a chain ultimately is the best investment, because, I think, to this day, it's still hard to find weighty chains that you can wear and pass on.

Having run the Olsen twins–dedicated blog Olsens Anonymous for over a decade, I am well-versed in their style evolution. For some years now, both Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen have been donning outfits almost exclusively with pieces from their own line, The Row. It's no surprise that the brand has a cult following—the minimal pieces are all painfully chic and can easily be mixed and matched, making for a practical, understated wardrobe. The only issue is The Row is purely aspirational for most due to the hefty price tags on all the pieces.

Thankfully, re-creating the look and vibe of the popular collections can be done in a much more affordable way. Dressing chicly in the middle of a seasonal transition can be difficult, specifically the unpredictability of the time between autumn and winter. Just this weekend, for example, I stepped out of the house dressed in a hooded trench coat and a pair of knee boots, readied for a downpour, only to find glorious sunshine the moment I stepped off the train in town. Knowing what to wear and when to wear it is anyone's guess until the cooler temperatures truly settle in (by then, there's no room for doubt), but if there is one wardrobe staple I know I can rely on until that point, it's trousers.

Trousers have been integral to the 2022 aesthetic. From cut-outs to unbuttoned waistlines, there has certainly been a fair share of eyebrow-raising iterations along the way to entertain us. However, the overall trouser mood has been more classic and timeless, and, unlike other trends born on TikTok, the season's key trouser trends have been sparked by celebrities.

Early adopters of the top trouser trends of the season, celebrities have proven that comfort and style needn't be mutually exclusive with their ensembles. Take Dakota Johnson, who showcases a fresh silhouette of black tailored trousers as she runs errands in NYC. Then there's Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, who makes a case for the elevated legging style that works outside of the home or the gym. Even leather trousers, once considered one of the more restrictive trouser options, are more appeasing in straight-leg form, as evidenced by Jasmine Tookes.

1. BLACK TAILORED

Style Notes: Never has the black tailored trouser been considered so fashionable as it has been this year. Slipping on a pair would previously give me flashbacks of getting ready for school. Now, though, with a wider fit and tailored waistband, there's nothing that makes me feel sleeker. As Dakota Johnson demonstrates, the black tailored trouser can work with practically any top half, be it a fitted shirt or a casual knitted cardigan and bra top two-piece.

2. LEATHER

Style Notes: I spent years searching for leather trousers that would fit my curvy, size-12 frame, but with all the spray-on or tapered styles that dominated, my quest was fruitless. That was until straight-leg styles, just like Jasmine Tookes's pair, came into play.

3. FLARE

Style Notes: The '70s have played a big role in shaping the style aesthetic this year, with the return of the flared trouser causing much debate. This time around, the silhouette is less defined, owing to the use of more fluid, unstarched fabrics, which has given flares a more elevated finish. Make like Hailey Bieber, and pair yours for an easy polished 'fit.

4. SPLIT-HEM LEGGINGS

Style Notes: Sometimes the smallest tweaks can make all the difference, and that's certainly the case when it comes to leggings—split the hem and the basic jersey trouser instantly feels more glamorous. Follow Rosie Huntington-Whiteley's lead and finish with slingback heels and an oversize blazer.

Style Notes: With everyone from Kate, the Princess of Wales, to Zoë Kravtiz wearing them, puddle pants have been the trouser trend of 2022, and their appeal is showing no signs of waning the closer we get to 2023. With excess fabric that pools around the ankle, this perhaps isn't the trouser style to choose on a rainy day, but its versatility makes it a wardrobe staple nonetheless.

Style Notes: The Y2K aesthetic is going nowhere; Bella Hadid's cargo pants can attest to that! The trouser loans itself to casual outfits, with flat shoes and leather outerwear serving as the It-girl-approved way to style them.

Style Notes: You've likely honed in on the recurring themes of wider legs and longer hems that keep cropping up, and both apply to jeans, too. Katie Holmes is just one of the celebrities currently favouring loose-fitting denim over skinnies this season.

Style Notes: If wearing your pyjamas out of the house is basically your dream outfit scenario, then you're going to want to invest in a pair of silk trousers. Mary-Kate Olsen was snapped in a black pair, which she styled with white trainers and a black wool coat, cementing them as one of the chicest trouser trends of 2022 in the process. I took a look back at the documented outfits of Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen over the past few years, and there were a few themes. One of them was very few jeans. They're clearly trouser girls and have been wearing puddle pants long before they were a trend. And now that they are a trend, it hasn't stopped them from wearing them.

While out shopping together in West Hollywood this week, Mary-Kate and Ashley had the similar idea of wearing long and loose black pants. Ashley paired hers (which had more of a flare shape) with an oversized white T-shirt and pointed-toe boots while Mary-Kate went with a scarf, long black blazer, and flip-flops. If you saw their outfits without context, it would be difficult to guess what season it was, but I suppose that also proves the versatility of a pair of black puddle pants. They'd work as part of a carefree summer outfit or a cozy fall one.

Michael Apa, DDS, is an aesthetic dentist known for his innovative method of natural-looking veneers that are custom shaped and fit to a person's features. He is a favorite among celebrities such as the Olsen twins, Chloë Sevigny, Uma Thurman, Lucy Hale, and many more.

In the latest episode of our podcast, Who What Wear With Hillary Kerr, Apa talks about his journey to becoming a cosmetic dentist, the impact that teeth have on anti-aging, dental must-haves to use at home, and his ultimate goal to shake up the dental industry. I personally—even though I've worked in the beauty and fashion world for two decades—have not specifically connected youth or anti-aging along with teeth in that same way. How do those two relate in your opinion?

So your teeth are the support for the lower third of your face. I always use the example of a denture. If you see someone that has a denture take it out, their entire lower third of their face collapses, and they put it back in, and their lips are fuller, their jaws are fuller, their jawline is structured, and there's real vertical height in the lower third of their face. It supports the rest of their face, their skin. What's happening over time is we're getting to a denture. So our teeth are collapsing, and they're getting shorter and grinding down. And they're discoloring and chipping and staining and the obvious things, but their skeletal structure from the beginning will dictate what they're going to look like. When they go to a dermatologist or plastic surgeon, they're looking at facial collapse, but they're not understanding that it's their skeletal structure and their teeth. And so the dermatologist is going to say, "Oh, well, your lips are longer and thinner, so let's inject them, which is going to make it fuller and down more." Or they're going to do a lip lift. But it's not going to change the overall structure of the lower third of their face, which is really what they need. So if you understand facial aging, teeth have everything to do with how old you look and how fast. Now, obviously, it has nothing to do with skin and things like that, but it has everything to do with the support of your face.

Are there any at-home treatments or favorite products that you really like? Also, apparently, everyone needs an electric toothbrush, but I didn't know that. So what else does everyone need? And why do they need an electric toothbrush?

I think that a lot of people would benefit from a night guard to sleep with. Not the sexiest thing in the world, but what a night guard is doing is it is stopping your teeth from shifting, and it's stopping that vertical collapse that's happening to your teeth over time, like getting to that "I just took my denture out" look. It will substantially hold things into place. Even when I do someone's teeth, we make every single patient a night guard because it maintains the integrity of what I just did. So think of it in the opposite direction if you just wore it from your 20s when you do most of your grinding and your stress from all the things that happen in your 20s, all the destruction you would have avoided to your teeth. So a night guard is a thing that a lot of dentists don't talk about, which is super important.

Electric toothbrush. So number one: Electric toothbrush is on a timer, right? So you don't have to wonder like, Did I brush my teeth for two minutes? But you really do need two minutes to brush your teeth properly. Most manual brushes are scrubbers, which isn't fantastic for your gums. And that doesn't really get into all spots, you know? Then you have to think of the manual dexterity of people. Can everyone really use a manual toothbrush the way that they can an electric toothbrush? I would say 85% of the world does not know how to properly brush their teeth with a manual toothbrush.

You have a tremendous team, a tremendous practice. You have innovated so much in your area of expertise. What do you want people to remember you for? What do you want to do next? What is the scope of your ambition, doctor?

I mean, the ultimate scope is to change the dental visit in general. But it's a very broad statement, and in order to get there, a lot has to happen. I would say a five- to seven-year plan is we're going to have many offices with almost APA-trained dentists in these offices with a certain standard of care and cosmetics because there is no recognized specialty by the American Dental Association. Anyone can do anything they want. It's like everyone doing oral surgery or everyone doing root canals. You can do it, but there are recognized specialties to where consumers or patients can go to a board-certified endodontist or a board-certified oral surgeon, but they can't go to a board-certified cosmetic dentist. So the idea is to transform our offices into that board certification so that patients know when they're going there they're getting a certain standard of care, even if I'm not personally doing it. 

The ultimate goal is to change the dental experience. Why technology in dentistry has not evolved at the pace of technology in other areas of the world is completely insane to me as a dentist. If you went to dental conventions and spoke to other dental companies and the people that sit on these boards… It's nothing against anyone, but we're not seeing the big picture as an industry. … You know what really generates the fear in a dental office? The noise, the smell all those things. Why are we still using air-driven hand pieces that make the super-loud noise when you go into someone's mouth? Why do we even have chairs that look like those dental chairs? They just look scary because it's the same dental chair from the early 1900s with a couple modifications, but basically, when you look at those old pictures in 1900s, there's not much [that is] different. So I would say the ultimate—after we really create a standard of care in our industry—it's to change dentistry in general and really bring innovative concepts to the everyday dental visit.
