When I was little, I wanted to be a tourist. In my defense, it was listed, inexplicably, as a viable career in a picture book I had about jobs, and I thought it looked like a hoot. The cartoon couple wore matching Hawaiian shirts (and tans), clutched cocktails, and had their cameras ready. Most importantly, they sported huge smiles. Even in a kid’s picture book, they looked happier than, say, the accountant or doctor. When my mom gently tried breaking the news, I shrugged it off. I had picture proof! Besides, I’d taken my first flight at eight months. If anything, I’d gotten a head start on my dream career.

Years have passed, the bubble since broken, and while I’m not a tourist (nor am I a travel blogger or photographer), I am a seasoned flyer. Airports can be a dreary place, no doubt, but getting on a plane excites me, and picking out a travel outfit downright delights me.

But even with hundreds of thousands of miles under my belt, I’m not immune to blowing my travel look. I’ve been too hot, too cold, unfathomably uncomfortable, and although I’m loathe to admit it, held up a few security lines. But you live, you learn, and you board your next flight.

MISTAKE #1

HARD-TO-REMOVE SHOES

Even the savviest, slickest prechecked traveler isn't immune to TSA snafus, especially during peak travel times.

A closed toe is key (and will keep your feet cozy) but being able to slip your footwear on and off easily will ensure a more comfortable flight.

MISTAKE #2: AN OPEN-TOP TOTE

I have a very cute woven basket that I love so much it's practically become my personality. What's not practical, however, is trying to a stuff a stiff, gaping wide bag under a seat.

I wear a lot of delicate jewelry, and chances are you do, too. That said, I've woken up mid-flight after a deep REM cycle with pillow creases and a dry mouth and without a few of my ear cuffs. 

SOLUTION: A TRAVEL CASE

Save yourself (and the flight crew) a round of panic attacks. Remove and store anything you'd be devastated to lose to the deep recesses of your seat.

Up until today, you probably found yourself saying "the perfect pair of leggings does not exist." And how could they? Everyone wears leggings with varying intentions. While you might put yours on to run a casual marathon, others might wear theirs for sheer comfort. On top of that, no two bodies are exactly alike, meaning one person is searching for a fit that's completely different than the next. So, maybe there isn't one particular pair of perfect leggings, but there are certain qualities that, when combined, make up a pair of leggings that can't be beat, and we were determined to find out what those were.

In order to get the most thorough answer possible, we reached out to Lululemon, an athlete, and a trainer for their takes on what to look for when shopping for standout leggings. Between someone who designs leggings for a living and someone who wears leggings for a living, it's safe to say we're in good hands. Below, you'll hear from Audrey Reilly, SVP of women's design at Lululemon, and Dara Hart, athlete and founding trainer at Dogpound (we killed two birds with one stone—sue us) on the three most important legging qualities, from complementary yet varying perspectives.

Just when you think you own enough bras and leggings, Lululemon swoops in with a new collection that's guaranteed to spark another shopping binge. (Sorry about that.) The brand has teamed up with Francesca Hayward, principal dancer of The Royal Ballet of London, on a new ballet-inspired line that's as pretty as can be. There are swimsuits made for poolside lounging and then there are swimsuits made for actual swimming, surfing, or the water sport of your choice—and yes, they are very different. Lululemon's new swimwear collection, dubbed Will the Wave, definitely fits into the latter category. (But make no mistake: The pieces are still cute enough to wear poolside if that's more your speed.)

The new suits were designed with pro surfer and Lululemon ambassador Malia Manuel, so you can bet they were created to withstand whatever the ocean throws at you. The collection just launched today, but I was lucky enough to test it out last week, when Lululemon invited me for a surf session in Malibu (with Manuel on hand for much-needed pointers, of course).

I hit the surf wearing the new bikini, and I can definitively confirm that it didn't budge one bit in the waves. There are no ties or closures to come undone, and the cross-back detail ensures that the straps won't be falling off your shoulders. Bonus: I thought the bikini top had an amazing push-up effect on my small chest—a miracle if I do say so myself. As for the bottoms, they feel snug and secure without feeling tight and won't put you at risk for an embarrassing moment after a big wave.

Plus, I later put on a wetsuit to guard against the chilly water, and I thought the bikini was the perfect thin, unnoticeable layer to wear underneath—it definitely lives up to the "second skin" description. People who know me well won't believe that I wrote this story. They won't believe that the girl who lives by the mantra "all-black everything all the time" took a step outside her comfort zone to find printed leggings that are actually cool. However, they're wrong, and this is real. I thought this process would be difficult and disappointing, but it was quite the opposite. I actually found several pairs of printed leggings that minimalists like me will love.

For those of you who think this topic might seem trivial, make no mistake: It's not. The athleisure industry has seen an influx of printed pieces covered in everything from stars and moons to avocados and dinosaurs. I'm not here to vouch for the latter, but I can get behind a tasteful design. Life is all about trying new things and having fun, so why can't the same be true for shopping for workout clothes? If you feel the same way I do, keep scrolling to see the printed leggings that I'd be willing to wear to a workout class.

If you don’t own a single pair of printed or colored leggings, consider this your gateway piece. The minimal gradient design will flatter your thighs, and the colors aren’t aggressive. With a comfortable high waist and a cottony-soft feel, you’ll quickly fall in love with these leggings.

Hear me out, but these are perfect for people who don’t usually wear printed leggings. When the print and the background of the leggings are almost the same color, it’s way less noticeable and actually quite flattering. I would never wear full snakeskin, but when it’s shown in this burgundy color, I’m actually into it.

These camo printed leggings are actually perfect. I love how subtle the print is, and I honestly prefer the blue hue to its traditional green counterpart. In addition to bearing a lovable low-key print, this price point is truly unbeatable.

An exciting black-on-black moment here. Ultracor leggings are constantly selling out, and I can understand why. With fun prints, compressive waistbands, and moisture-wicking properties, it’s safe to say that you’ll want to wear these cool leggings in and out of the studio.

I can actually see myself wearing these graphic printed leggings. Even though they’re outside my comfort zone, at the end of the day, they are black and white, two colors that I wear all the time. Therefore, I would be happy to add this to my athleisure wardrobe.

Don’t ask me why, but I’m into these. It’s like a deconstructed take on the Americana vibe. I also think the angular lines perfectly frame your curves in an innovative way. Oh, and did I mention that these have a secret waistband pocket?

I’m never one for florals and don’t really care for too many cutouts, but everything about these makes me happy. I love how they make a statement without being too loud, and I would absolutely wear these after class with a leather jacket and a cool T-shirt.

Something about these palm-print leggings is really speaking to me. It’s a fun take on a timeless print without feeling over the top. These could even be paired with black sneakers and a black top to downplay their whimsical print.

This color-block situation is so fun. I don’t normally gravitate to this trend, but the soft pink curves are actually slimming while the graphic bottom is a fun pop of excitement. I promise you won’t regret this purchase.

These leggings are anything but boring. Normally anything remotely close to animal print doesn’t get to be a part of my workout wardrobe, but these are different. The clean lines, shading, and curved lines seem to flatter the thighs and hips, and as someone who is definitely well- endowed in that area, I’ll take it.

Next time you’re shopping for leggings, remember there’s no harm in trying something a little bit outside your comfort zone.

Does anyone else remember the show Kyle XY? It aired on what used to be ABC Family channel (now it's Freeform) and followed the life of an alien boy who didn't have a belly button. I bring this up because when I look for workout clothes, I constantly have Kyle XY in mind because I don't want anyone to see my belly button. If you can see my belly button, you can see my lower stomach, which is one of my least favorite areas of my body. I train hard five to six days per week. I eat clean six days per week. But despite my efforts, I don't have a single ab in sight. I'm okay with this. There are more important things in life, like French fries and cookies, and I'm not willing to skimp on those small pleasures. So in order to feel like my most confident and fittest self, I rely on my best friend—my high-waisted leggings.

If you don't love your stomach area and you don't own high-waisted leggings, I'm here to hit you with the truth. They are, without a doubt, the best thing to happen to the athleisure world since the sports bra. A good pair of high-waisted leggings not only hides your lower stomach, but it also pulls you, lifts your butt, and stays up throughout your most difficult and active workouts. I wanted to take my love for this article of clothing to the next level and try to find the pieces that check all the aforementioned boxes. I tried high-waisted leggings from 11 popular athleisure brands and, I promise these are the best of the best.

1. Zella

These are hands-down a favorite for THE/THIRTY readers and editors for a number of reasons. One, they're comfortable and supportive with moisture-wicking and sculpting fabric. Two, the elastic waistband never slips and even has a handy built-in pocket. And three, it's a great quality pair of leggings at an even better price point.

2. Sweaty Betty

This UK activewear brand is a force to be reckoned with. Its high-waisted bum-sculpting leggings do exactly what they say they will. Thanks to their flattering and practical design, I will continue to trust these leggings through my most difficult and fast-paced workouts.

3. Athleta

You know a pair of high-waisted tights are going to be good when they have a supportive compression, a no-slip waistband, and pockets. These tights are perfect. They didn't fall down at all, and I want to wear them for all of my future workouts. Oh, and did I mention that they wick sweat?

4. FP Movement

These leggings are incredibly light. They feel like you're wearing next to nothing. I was worried they would move around during my workout because, in my experience, lighter leggings don't always stay close to the body during fast movements. I was so wrong. These stayed up and barely moved during my workout. I was constantly worried and kept touching them and checking to make sure they were staying in place because I felt like I wasn’t even wearing leggings, but they really did stay up.

5. Alo Yoga

These leggings are so great. I love how thick the band is and how the design really lifts your butt. The best part, though, is they have pockets all over so you can travel light. Overall, I love these tights, and I think they are perfect for low- or high-intensity training.

6. Nike

These leggings are lightweight and feel like almost second-skin. The fabric is silky-soft, too.

7. Varley

I thought the perfect high-waisted leggings didn't exist—and then I tried these. The brand's pieces are lightweight, the seams aren't heavy, and the waistband survived through squats, burpees, and deadlifts. The fabric feels like so smooth against your skin, and these leggings keep your body cool and dry during super-sweaty workouts. If I could live in these leggings I would.

8. Girlfriend Collective

Compressive, high-waisted, stretchy, sweat-wicking, squat-proof, and soft? What more can you ask for? Oh wait, we didn't mention that these leggings are made from recycled water bottles, making them a sustainable option, too.

9. Alala

These leggings have a special space in my closet. Alala leggings don't come cheap, but they're worth every penny. The thick waistband makes you feel secure, and the fashion-forward design features are absolutely perfect. This particular pair of leggings lasted through every type of movement that threw its way. If you love to work out and find yourself looking for an item to splurge on, give yourself the gift of a pair of Alala leggings.

10. Lululemon

I'm no stranger to Lululemon leggings. Prior to completing this experiment, its Fast & Free Tights were my favorite high-waisted leggings of all time. I considered buying multiple pairs, but my bank account suggested otherwise. These high-waisted tights have a hidden waistband pocket and a drawstring to make sure that the tights are just as high at the end of the workout as they were at the beginning. I'll definitely be wearing this style on repeat.

11. Carbon38

There are a lot of things I love about Carbon38. I love that it designs pieces with the hardest workouts in mind. And I love its Takara leggings. They're the best-selling leggings on the site, and they deserve that honor. They don't move. The slimming design pulls you in and keeps you secure no matter how intense your workout is.

After all of my thorough research and testing, I can confidently say that you can't go wrong with any of these leggings. Do you wear underwear with workout leggings? We know this question may feel a bit intimate, but here's the thing: It matters. Between hot-button topics like panty lines, naked leggings, and, well, your health "down there," revisiting your activewear undergarment choices is actually important. So we tapped a gynecological expert to fill us in: Is there a right or wrong choice when it comes to leggings and underwear?

"The answer to this has more to do with comfort than any gynecologic risk," says Sara Twogood, MD, an assistant professor of clinical obstetrics and gynecology at USC's Keck School of Medicine. "Depending on seams or material, not wearing underwear may chafe."

In addition, Twogood notes that moisture due to sweat and general body function are important to factor in, especially if you're wearing leggings for something more active. "If the genital region is constantly moist due to wearing non-breathable material, this increases the risk for a yeast infection. It may also increase odor (and although odor is probably normal under these circumstances, it may be bothersome to the woman)."

Twogood's recommendation is to choose cotton underwear to allow for maximum breathability. And if you're partial to going without underwear, make sure to wash your leggings frequently to avoid odor and possible infection.

If you could peek inside the virtual shopping baskets of millennials, there's a good chance you'd see one specific brand over and over again. U.S. resale app Poshmark analysed millions of its transactions and officially determined that Lululemon is the most purchased brand in its system in America right now. (Given its cult status, we can't say we're surprised.) Rounding out the app's top five in-demand labels are Gucci, Adidas, Free People and Madewell.

Leggings are one of those boring staples that can be neutral, if downright uninspiring, to shop for. In addition to pillaging my own leggings drawer, I asked around to my team of fashion editors and in-the-know stylist friends for their favorites, too. Whether an outdoor run or a relaxing hot yoga class is more your speed, an appropriate wardrobe for your preferred physical activity is of utmost importance. The most important quaility to look for when shopping for yoga outfits is that they’re formfitting, unless you want to flash the yogi behind you while in down dog. Tanks with built-in sports bras are your friend. You’re in luck, as there are a plethora of stylish options out there, tailor-made for yoga classes. Bonus: This gear is also great for Pilates and barre classes!
