It's been five years since we last spoke to Lucy Hale about her beauty routine, and I can confirm the actress's skin looks just as clear and glowy as it appeared in 2021. (In fact, I'd even say her complexion has remained virtually unchanged since we were introduced to her as Aria Montgomery during the 2010 pilot of Pretty Little Liars.) Yet as we sit in a dimly lit treatment room at NYC's Sage + Sound, she reveals her skin has experienced quite a few shifts underneath the surface—so much so that she evolved her entire approach.

"In 2021, I was probably still in my 'more is more' phase," she says. After all, it was around this time her Vogue Beauty Secrets video—which showcased a 25-step skin and makeup regimen—went absolutely bananas on the internet. Today, it's safe to say she's cut that routine by more than half. "I'm five years older, so my priorities are a little bit different. I have to approach my skin type differently," she says. These days, hyperpigmentation and fine lines are her main concerns ("It's all happening," she jokes), so a partnership with Shiseido—which just added two new products to its Benefiance brightening and smoothing range—was practically written in the stars. "I have always loved Shiseido's products. To me, it's classic, and the Benefiance line is beautiful," she says. "Once I find a product that I like, I like when it comes in a trio or package because then I know it's going to attack at all angles."

The Benefiance collection does just that, offering a serum, moisturizer, and eye cream with impeccable line-smoothing, dark spot-fading power. The serum and moisturizer also come spiked with picão preto, a plant-derived retinol alternative that's been shown to stimulate collagen levels and smooth wrinkles—and because there's no actual retinol in the formulas, you can use it day and night without any photosensitivity concerns. Of course, Hale still stresses the importance of daily sunscreen, praising Shiseido's Urban Environment line for its sensoriality. "It's so sheer, and you can mix it in your foundation. It's so nice," she says.

From there, her skin must-haves include a gua sha (In the morning, I just need to wake my skin up a little bit," she shares) and an LED mask from Jovs. "LED light really does wonders for my skin," she adds.

Her makeup routine follows a similar "less is more" M.O. Don't get me wrong, Hale still loves to accentuate her wide, hazel-green eyes, but she'd rather strategically enhance them with shadow than globs of mascara and eyeliner. "I'm really into the no-mascara [look]. Somehow that almost makes my eyes pop more," she tells me. "Sometimes I'll put clear brow gel on my lashes just so they fan out, but it doesn't give them any more pigment." Charlotte Tilbury's Brow Fix is the MVP, as it boasts a clump-free formula and small, precise brush.

The go-to technique seems rather at odds with Aria Montgomery, particularly her daytime smokey eye that populated beauty mood boards in the 2010s. "In 2016, I was loading up on mascara. I loved an eyeliner," Hale reflects on her Pretty Little Liars days. "I don't think I even own an eyeliner anymore." Today, she'd much rather define her orbs with a soft shadow—namely Charlotte Tilbury's Filmstar Bronze & Glow Contour Duo, which she applies along her lash line for some subtle dimension. "It pops the green [in my eyes]," she notes.

Don't think that means Hale shies away from the occasional bold glam; she did sport rose gold locks back in 2018, after all. "I love a dramatic haircut. I'm growing out my hair right now, but me at prime Lucy is a blunt, short bob," she says. "I feel like I try to change it up with every acting gig I have." Of course, I have to ask her if we can expect a big chop—or any other beauty experiment—for spring and summer. "No big surprises yet," she smiles. "But if I told you, it wouldn't be a surprise." Who knows? In another five years, we might look back on this conversation as the impetus for Hale's next beauty era.

If you had to leave the house in five minutes, what are a few staple beauty products you’d apply or bring with you?

Wow, I mean, that typically is where I’m at in my life right now. It’s so funny because growing up, I would allot maybe a full hour and a half to get ready, which now just sounds completely mental. For me, the most important thing is brows—no matter where I’m going or what I’m doing, I always apply brow gel. "Bigger is better” has become my brow mantra. I don’t even really touch them; I just let them go wild. So I’ll apply some brow gel, and then I’ve only been religiously using SPF for the last couple of years—I wish I could say I was diligent about it growing up—but I always use SPF. There’s this one by EltaMD that is good for breakout-prone skin which I love. It doesn’t clog my pores; it’s just really great. Hmm, and then maybe some lip balm? And that’s kind of it! If I have some more time, I might apply some concealer and mascara, but I typically just wear big sunglasses, anyway, and we have a mask on our face most of the time now, so we don’t really have to do much! My skin breaks out pretty easily, so if I don’t have to wear much makeup that day, I try to just let my skin breathe a little bit.

Speaking of skin, can you walk me through your skincare routine, both morning and night?

Yes! It's so sad because I love products. Like, I’m a beauty hoarder. I love trying new things, and I’m a sucker for everything. But I’ve realized as I’ve gotten older that my skin just can’t handle too much, and I’ve had to really cut back. I mean, I used to be the girl who had a 15-step skincare routine every single night. My whole approach to skincare now is really about consistency and less about the number of products I’m using.

But okay, I’ll start with my morning routine, which is a little simpler than my nighttime. I like to start by using a gentle cleanser to really get off all of my products from the night before and any oil that’s built up. Next, I’ll do a toner, and then it depends, but typically every other day, I’ll either use a vitamin C serum or a hyaluronic acid serum, or sometimes I’ll just kind of mix them together. I don’t really need to add a lot more moisture since my skin naturally produces quite a bit of oil, so I just put on that SPF, and that’s pretty much it for the morning.

So, okay, sorry I have to interrupt you here. Vitamin C serums can be so tricky for people with acne-prone or sensitive skin. Which one do you use?

Yeah! I’ve definitely had that problem, and a lot of vitamin C serums just made me break out even more. There’s a really good one from SkinCeuticals that’s specifically meant for breakout-prone skin. I find that with any products I use, I try to go the oil-free route, so with vitamin C serums, it can get a little tricky since so many of them are oil-based. But that’s a really good one that I’ve found.

Oh, are you talking about the Silymarin CF? It’s truly the only vitamin C serum I’ve ever been able to use without my skin freaking out. I break out super easily too.

Yeah, yeah, that one! And you know, I’ve actually found that using different products on different parts of my face really helps curb my breakouts. For instance, my cheeks and my forehead can handle more than my nose and my chin, so I kind of almost have to spot-treat all around my face with my different products.

And then for nighttime, if I have time, and if I have a whole evening, I’ll multi-mask. I’ll do a purifying mask. I’ll maybe do some microcurrent with my little NuFace device, which is amazing. But as far as my standard routine, I’m all about double-cleansing. It’s shocking how much stuff is left behind on your face when you just cleanse once [laughs], so I use a gel cleanser first, and that kind of grips everything and pulls everything out from the skin, and then I’ll do a milky, more moisturizing cleanser after that so I’m not overdrying or stripping my skin. I’m also a big believer in retinol. Teresa Tarmey makes a Retinol Gel ($105) that is a little easier on my skin and doesn’t make me flake. After that, I’ll use a hyaluronic acid serum or something that’s just really moisturizing. I’ll use a spot treatment with salicylic acid in it if I have any zits or breakouts, and then at night, I’ll apply a slightly heavier moisturizer, but it still has to be oil-free. And that’s pretty much it! Although, I will say that I love sheet masks, and if I’m traveling or on a plane or just feel like I need a little extra moisture, I love to sit in a sheet mask for 30 minutes. 

Do you have any favorites you use religiously? 

I love the ones from 111Skin—they’re bio-cellulose—which is a little more grippy—instead of paper, so they stay on your skin better, and it feels like the ingredients just soak in more. They make a couple of different ones that I really like. 

Nothing is worse than when your sheet mask just slides down your face.

[Laughs] Exactly.

I’d like to pivot a little bit toward makeup. You’ve been a global ambassador for Almay for a little over a year. What would you say is the best makeup trick you’ve learned since you started working with the brand?

I don’t know if it’s really a tip or trick per se… It's more just me having formed a deeper appreciation for clean, hypoallergenic makeup. I’ve been so lucky to work with really amazing makeup artists for the entirety of my career, but one amazing thing about Almay is realizing how much of a difference these products can make in my skin, especially being acne-prone. Almay was actually founded by a dermatologist—he created the whole line for his wife who had breakout-prone skin, which I thought was really, really sweet. I was like, that’s my dream man! 

[Laughs] Seriously!

I need someone who will do that for me! Overall, working with Almay has really changed my approach to beauty and makeup. To me, the fewer ingredients there are in a product, the better. I also love that Almay was the first brand to voluntarily include ingredients on its packaging. They have nothing to hide, so that transparency has always been there. Not to mention all of their makeup is geared toward people with acne-prone skin, but the products are still amazing! They don’t sacrifice color or pigment, and the makeup is still really fun.

Okay, prepare yourself. If you had to choose your three favorite Almay products of all time, what would they be and why?

Oh, let’s see. Well, they have this line of lipsticks called Lip Vibes, and they have them in many, many colors, but there’s a shade called Treat Yourself—it’s a red, but it also has a little bit of pink in it, and it’s kind of become my signature red lip color. Then, they have a mascara in a blue tube called Length & Lift ($7), and it’s SO good. I’m really picky about mascaras and the brushes, and this just has the perfect brush. And then, they have the All Day Intense Gel Eyeliner ($8), which really stays put. They’re great for sensitive eyes, and I mean, normally I’m not a huge eyeliner person, but I do like to use it to rim my upper waterline. They have this really beautiful brown color called Deep Chestnut. So those are my faves right now, but they’re always coming out with new fun things. 

You mentioned earlier how fun Almay’s makeup is, and it seems like you have so much fun with beauty, in general. You’re never afraid to try a new hair color or makeup look, which, for many of us, can be scary or intimidating. Where does that fearlessness come from?

Well, that is really sweet of you to say because I often don’t feel fearless enough, so it’s nice to hear that. I don’t know! I’ve always appreciated makeup and beauty, which I think really comes from my grandmother. She wore this iconic red lipstick, and she would let me play with her makeup, too. I think also growing up as an actress has been a huge part of that. I would basically live in my makeup-and-hair trailer, and I have gotten super close with all of the hair and makeup artists I’ve worked with. I think having fun with beauty and trying new things has become a really beautiful way to express myself. I think that’s ultimately what it is—I get very bored with a lot of things in my life, but with makeup, there are constant ways to try and do new things. It’s almost like trying on a new identity too because, in my day-to-day life, I keep it pretty simple. I’m not spending an hour and a half getting ready. But if I have a character for a movie or a show or if I’m doing an event, it’s almost like I pick who I want to be. Like, what girl do I want to be tonight? It’s just fun! There are no right or wrong answers. 

You’re right—there’s no need to take ourselves so seriously. Hmmm, okay. What’s one thing about your beauty routine that would surprise people? 

Oh, wow. Oh my god. Maybe I’m not full of surprises. Um, let’s see. Oh! Well, I’ve talked about my brows before, but I literally don’t do anything to them at this point. I don’t see anyone to tweeze them, and I probably only trim them twice a year. I don’t know—some people might not be that surprised by that. But what else is surprising? I don’t know… I guess I’m not a girl of mystery! [Laughs]

No, that’s a good one! I was recently talking to Emilia Clarke—who also has amazing brows—for this same series, and she essentially said the same thing. The secret is really just not doing anything.

Right! But oh! I just thought of another good secret: I do use a lash serum. 

Ooooohh.

Every night. I kind of swear by that, and it really helps keep my lashes healthy. I’m constantly having to wear fake lashes or mascara when I’m working every day, and this keeps them really strong, and it’s one that I’ve found that doesn’t make your lashes go crazy. It just makes them really, really long. 

Well, now I have to ask you which one you use. Lash serums can be tricky! And they can often be super irritating. 

Yeah, yeah! It’s the one from Rodan + Fields. It’s definitely an investment—it’s pretty pricey, but it lasts a long time, and I swear by it. 

Okay, switching gears a little bit. If you could dedicate an entire day to self-care, what would your schedule look like?

Oh, I love this. I wake up really, really early because my dogs are like children and want to wake up when the sun is still down. [Laughs] I make my cup of coffee. I love having slow mornings. I've found that not having to rush really kick-starts my mood in the right way. I try to hike every day. There’s a canyon near where I live, and that’s sort of my "me” time. I’m not a big meditator in the sense that I can’t really sit still, so it’s kind of like moving meditation for me. So a hike, and, you know, I am all about a massage and a facial. That’s definitely how I treat myself a lot of the time. I love a good hydrating facial, and there’s a place in L.A. called The Now that gives really amazing massages. I also love really good food, so if I’m really just going to have a day, I’m going to order from some of my favorite places in L.A. I like to order in, watch a good Netflix show… It’s kind of all of the standard things. Oh, and there would probably be some retail therapy thrown in there too.

That sounds so, so nice. Let’s see. I think I still have time for a couple more questions. So there’s kind of this huge, distorted fear around aging in our culture, and I know you’ve recently entered your 30s…

Yes. [Laughs]

Would you say you’re enjoying this decade more than your 20s?

I am! I am. When I was in my mid-20s, everyone would tell me their 30s were the best years of their lives. And at that point, I just kind of did the whole eye-roll thing like yeah, okay, whatever. But they actually are the best years! It’s really true that your priorities start to shift as you get older. Things I used to worry about, I don’t necessarily worry about [them] as much anymore. I feel like I’ve taken some of my power back, and I just feel like a way more confident version of myself. So I am enjoying my 30s so far, and I hope it continues! 

Yeah, I mean, I know you are still very early on in the 30s spectrum.

Yeah, but it’s true! I mean, in the next couple of years, I’ll be in my mid-30s. It's exciting though. I’m proud of where I’ve come from and what I’ve been through to get to this point, and I think it’s important to be grateful for where you’re at in that particular moment in time. It’s been a journey, for sure. 

Last question, and I’m going to preface this by saying you can add some context to your answer. What’s your Unfiltered beauty philosophy in seven words or fewer?

Seven words or fewer! Let’s see. I want to say something along the lines of remembering that what you see on the internet isn’t real. It’s so easy for us to get caught up in these beauty standards that are just totally unrealistic. So how do I say that in seven words?! The. Internet. Isn’t. Real. That’s four words.

Ignore. The. Internet. [Laughs] 

Yeah, ignore the internet. There we go!

Especially in this time when everyone is constantly on social media and the comparison game gets intense. It’s hard! 

It’s easy to think that what you see is real, and it’s easy to get super sucked into all of that. It’s really important to try to just step away.

I go on about this a lot, but nothing gets me down more than the fact that my hair is lifeless and lacking texture. I can spend up to two hours tonging it and misting it with several different sprays and still not manage to achieve the effortlessly tousled look I so crave. At the end of the whole ordeal, I’m left with one of two hair looks: matted, flat and greasy as a result of the excess product in there or a Dolly Parton–esque bouffant. 

If you ask me, achieving beachy lengths that look effortless is one of my hardest beauty feats. And while I’m still eagerly anticipating my post-lockdown haircut, it’s safe to say that I am looking for all of the tips to style out my rather ridiculously long hair right now. Luckily for me, I recently got the chance to sit down with Laura Polko, T3 ambassador and hairstylist to the likes of Gigi Hadid, Kate Bosworth, Lea Michele, Lucy Hale and Martha Hunt, to discover exactly how to achieve effortlessly tousled hair. This is what she had to say…

Dry Shampoo Makes All the Difference

It turns out a huge problem that so many of us face is that we’re repeatedly opting for the wrong styling products. "I see so many people using too much spray. When you use too much texture spray, it can make the hair look matted,” she warns. The answer? Steer clear of sticky texturising sprays and instead opt for targeted dry shampoo application. "Just take a small amount of dry shampoo to the crown. Spray it, and then shake it all out. It’s the best way to get that undone look.”

Invest in Your Tools

A key point that Polko is keen to drill home is that relying on product to style your hair just isn’t enough and usually won’t work. "It’s all in the tool,” she says. It would seem that there are lots of things many of us don’t consider when shopping for hair tools that can totally make or break the end result. "A hair tool that reheats itself often will make things a lot easier. It means that you don’t have to go back over things or end up with one half that looks dramatically different from the other.”

The other thing to keep an eye on? The lengths of the plates. "So many people struggle to curl their hair with straighteners, but the key is finding a pair that uses longer plates so that the hair doesn’t fall out,” she says. But if you still can’t nail it, there are other things you can try. The ultimate undone, natural-looking style, according to Polko, is flat-iron waves. "It’s not a look that comes across as overly styled. The key is, though, to always open up the face. Always bend up first. Otherwise, you get unnatural volume where you really don’t want it.”

Face Framing Is a Thing

Speaking of opening up the face, Polko suggests that this isn’t something that needs to take time or be a laborious task. In fact, it can be super quick and easy. "It’s called face framing. You don’t have to do anything with the hair except for one really subtle wave just where the eye is. This is where your hair would naturally tuck beside your ear,” she advises. If this seems weird at first, just try it and see the difference it makes. "The minute you add that, it makes everything look really natural. It’s subtle, but it really opens up the whole face.”

Never Forget the Ends

Here’s one that I can definitely take note of. When styling your own hair, it can be tempting to put all of your effort and attention into the middle section, where the eye is naturally drawn to. However, Polko warns that neglecting the ends can totally make or break your ’do. "You have got to pay attention to the ends. It’s the key to natural-looking tousled hair,” she says.

With the ends being the most fragile part of our strands, it makes sense that we are often reluctant to inflict heat upon them. However, making sure you use a hardworking heat protector first should do the job at protecting them. "If your hair is long, the key is to make sure the ends all go in different directions. If it’s short, curl them under a little bit. Naturally, the ends would all be doing a different thing,” says Polko.

The goal isn't to change the way you look; instead, it's about making your physique more in-proportion. Once you crack how to do that, you can wear anything you please. Last week we had the pleasure of welcoming actress Lucy Hale into the Who What Wear offices for an exclusive Q&A. Always fans of her off-duty style, we were particularly excited about this IRL opportunity to pick her brain on all things fashion, in addition to getting all the details about her new show on The CW, Life Sentence, premiering this Wednesday, March 7, at 9/8c. Before our editorial director, Bobby Schuessler, interviewed the fashionable star, guests enjoyed drinks, bites, and, of course, plenty of photo ops. Here’s everything Hale shared with us about her life, her style, and this exciting new role.

Tell us about the show and what your fans can expect.

Life Sentence follows a girl named Stella who is 23 years old. For the last eight years of her life, she was living with terminal cancer. She's the type of girl who sees the glass half full: She's super optimistic and lives every day like it was her last. She made super-spontaneous decisions like getting married, and then in the pilot we find out that this rare treatment that she's been receiving worked. She's not remission—she's cured of cancer. Now the story shifts: It's not a show about a girl who's sick; it's about a girl who has to figure out her life and who she is.

What drew you to this project specifically?

It was probably three months before we wrapped the last season of Pretty Little Liars, and I was like, You know, I don't know what I'm going to do with my life after this. Then I heard about this show. I thought it was really interesting taking this sick-girl story we all know the ending to and flipping it on its head and making it more of a comedy. They were taking a heavy topic and laughing about it. I always knew that for my next step after PLL I wanted to do something drastically different—I was playing the same character for eight years, and creatively I was itching to do something else.

How do you channel your own self-confidence?

I think your identity comes with age. Now I'm 28 years old, and I know what makes me happy and what doesn't. When I know I'm making the best and healthiest choices for me, that's when I feel the most confident.

Your character, Stella, has cool, relatable style on the show. Do you have a creative hand in picking the outfits?

I typically roll with it. She's an old soul to me, so I wanted her [wardrobe] to have this vintage feel, so she wears a lot of Peter Pan collars and high-waisted skirts and over-the-knee socks.

Are there any trends or brands you're gravitating toward right now?

I never really know what the trends are, but I love Anine Bing. I typically go for more casual stuff, too, like Rachel Comey. I'm really into vintage and thrift shopping right now. My favorite store in L.A. is American Rag. There's a cool jewelry designer named Kat Kim and a shoe brand called By Far. Re/Done jeans and T-shirts are great too.

Do you have a go-to off duty look?

Jeans, a leather jacket, and a T-shirt. Honestly, I also live in Lululemon workout clothes.

You may have noticed by now that we're big fans of Lucy Hale's casual Cali-girl style. Hale recently started filming for a new show on The CW, Life Sentence, after seven seasons (and eight years!) on Pretty Little Liars.

The show centers around a young woman named Stella who embraced a "live like you were dying" outlook on life while battling cancer for eight years and what happens when she suddenly finds out it's been cured. We were lucky enough to chat with the fashionable star about her exciting new role as well as her personal life, style, and favorite places to spend time in L.A. Here's everything we learned while catching up with Hale.

On the Transition From Pretty Little Liars to Life Sentence

"I'd be lying if I said it wasn't scary to start something new, but creatively, it also was really thrilling and exciting. I had no idea that I would move on so quickly. I got presented with this show and this character who I absolutely fell in love with. It was so drastically different from what I've been doing for the last eight years of my life. I always go with my gut, and my gut instinct was telling me that this was a character that only I can do, and I'm really glad that I got to do it, because it ended up being one of the greatest experiences of my life. I'm just very excited to introduce [my character] and the show to everyone."

On Her Character, Stella, in 3 Words

"Optimistic, spontaneous, and naive."

On Similarities Between Herself and Stella 

"We're both perfectionists in a way. Stella is actually someone I would strive to be more like because [she] likes to live in the moment, travel to new cities, and always see the glass half full. I think that she has a very positive outlook on life. I would love to be more like that. Stella is also a fixer. She wants to fix everyone else's problems and puts her problems on the back burner, which is something I tend to do in my everyday life as well."

On What She Would Do With Only a Certain Amount of Time Left to Live

"There are so many places in the world that I haven't been able to travel to, so definitely the thing I would love to do would revolve around traveling. Scuba diving, skydiving, and going on safaris. It would probably be a lot of spending time with people I don't get to see a lot because of what I do for a living. It's one of those scenarios where you truly don't know what you would do unless you actually got that news."

On The Pressure of Being a Role Model to Young Girls

"Without realizing that there's pressure, you want people to look at you a certain way. I always want to be authentic. Often things aren't what they seem to be. You see Instagrams and any version we want people to see, so there are times where I have to hold back things that I actually want to say. I try to be 100% myself though, and hopefully it comes off how I want it to."

On Working With Stylist Alyssa Sutter

"I've worked with Alyssa for the last couple of years, and I love her. She's very collaborative, but sometimes I do put all of my trust in her and have her pick something she thinks will work. I like to keep an open mind and not say 'no' too many times because I think fashion should be fun and about taking risks. Obviously if I'm completely uncomfortable, that's going to show on my face, so I try not to dress it up too much. I like to incorporate myself in whatever I'm wearing."

On If She'd Wear 2 Popular Trends

Chunky "Dad" Sneakers: "I actually think they're kind of cool."

Socks With Sandals: "That's always been a no for me. There are cute ruffly socks though. Socks with sneakers, yes, but socks with sandals is a stretch for me."

On How She Spends Her Free Time

"I love going to the spa and getting facials and getting caught up with things that make me feel more normal. I love to be outside, work out, and thrift-shop. I just bought a camera, and I'm going to force myself to learn about the camera and hopefully have a new hobby."

The Teen Choice Awards red carpet is always the fun, younger sibling of the heavy-hitting award shows like the Oscars and Grammys, but that doesn’t mean we love it any less.
