I've always been someone who does a lot of research before a trip—almost too much probably. But to me, it makes traveling so much more enjoyable since I already have a vetted list of places going into it, so I’m more present once I’m there. That was especially true for the monthlong stay in Los Angeles I just did.

With a city as huge and spread out as L.A., I went into it with more than 500 places saved (I know), and there was no way I was going to make it through all of them. I also asked my best friends who live there and our L.A.-based Who What Wear editors for even more recommendations—I wanted to know their all-time favorites—so there was no shortage of places to go.

On top of that, so much of L.A. is about the neighborhood you're in, since it really shapes what you do while you're there. Because I was staying in Silver Lake, most of what I did ended up being on the Eastside. That said, I still have so much left to explore on the Westside outside of a day in Malibu at El Matador State Beach.

I may not have made it to The Magic Castle, Tower Bar, or Wi Spa this time, but I did get to go to the ocean, see new neighborhoods, take weekend trips to Laguna Beach and Lake Arrowhead, visit the Hollywood Reservoir, and walk through the mansions in Beverly Hills.

Below, a long list of my favorite places I got to shop and eat—and what to pack.

We all have our random pet peeves, and one of mine is walking into a random restaurant only for it to be mid. I tend to pre-check by cross-referencing people I follow on TikTok, magazines and Substacks I read, and input from people whose taste I trust.

As I mentioned, being based in Silver Lake, most of my recommendations skew toward the Eastside. Off the bat, if I had to narrow down the restaurants I tried to just a few, I'd pick Barra Santos, Greekman's, and Found Oyster, with the top dessert being gelato from Bacio di Latte.

My favorite matcha and coffee was from Rōk, and I was also lucky enough to be within walking distance of two L.A. breakfast institutions (aka, places with notoriously long lines): Courage Bagels and Sqirl. The Win-Dow became my late-night dessert spot for a salted caramel dipped cone, and Tacos Delta was right down the street whenever I wanted quick Mexican. If you're looking for the buzziest spot in Silver Lake, Bar Seco is where people are quite literally spilling onto the sidewalk. And every Saturday, I made a point to go to the Silver Lake Farmers Market for tamales, onigiri, and fresh juice. The Hollywood Farmers Market is another incredible one if you're around on a Sunday.

I spent a lot of time in Los Feliz as well, where Wilde's, Little Dom's, La Pergoletta, All Time, and Best Fish Taco in Ensenada were the standouts. And over in Highland Park, Hermon's and Villas Tacos.

With our offices in West Hollywood, my regular lunch spot became Pantry, where I first tried Beverly Hills Juice. In other places around the city, I loved Sushi Gen, Pace, Saffy's, Bub & Grandma's, Wake & Late, Playita Mariscos, Handles Coffee, Holbox, and Jitlada.

For a classic L.A. dinner that's perfect for a birthday or date night, the answer is, of course, Musso & Frank. If you want Chinese food, I like Panda Inn—the sit-down restaurant that Panda Express originated from. And would it even be an L.A. food list without Erewhon? I bought the flourless chocolate cakes on multiple occasions and tried a juice that had broccoli in it. Unfortunately, I left without a $143 Erewhon-branded tote bag, but maybe next time.

If you have time to get outside the city, Laguna Beach is an easy day trip, where I got some incredible suggestions from our editorial director, Lauren Eggertsen. Put the luxury hotel Montage into Maps for incredibly stunning views, walk down to Treasure Island Beach, and eat at Ahba, Nick's (or South of Nick's), or Papa's Tacos. I did a weekend trip to Lake Arrowhead too and went to Cedar Glen Malt Shop or Mandarin Garden, if you find yourself there. I'd also recommend Ojai or Cambria for other options.

As I walked around the neighborhood where I was subletting on Sunset, I tried on sunglasses at Akila, went vintage shopping at Ratstar, and browsed Mohawk General Store and Rare Reserve. Not too far away, there's also Replika Vintage, Little Shop, Viviette Vintage, Arete Studios, Ending Soon Studios, and Gil Rodriguez. On a different day, while visiting my friend who lives in Highland Park, we popped into Mondo Mondo, and it was nice to finally try on their jewelry and smell their perfumes firsthand.

If you're into niche fragrance, The Scent Room is one of my favorite stores in L.A., carrying brands like Fugazzi, Maison Mataha, and Narcotica. And another beloved beauty destination, Larchmont Beauty Center, is on the same street.

Around West Hollywood, Scout has both designer and vintage on Melrose, with RLT and H. Lorenzo close by too. For appointment-only shopping, there's Earl IRL, Laurel Pantin's space in Beverly Hills, the Charlie Beads studio downtown, as well as Maimoun on Melrose, where you can book a private time to shop. Then there's Platform, a curated collection of independent shops and restaurants over in Culver City.

You might be shocked to know I brought an entire month’s worth of clothes in a carry-on. I will say I thankfully have a partner who notoriously packs very light, so I get to sneak things into his suitcase, and I used vacuum-sealed bags to maximize space. Overall, my packing method is just to bring basics I can mix and match, along with a few dresses that can work day to night without much thought.

My go-to bags on the trip were Are Studio's Frances Baguette and the Kabas Kiki Bag. For clothes, some of my most-worn were from Cou Cou—lightweight, easy, and cute. And I always keep a black cardigan on hand for when I inevitably get cold in restaurants or in the evening.

Somehow I fit four pairs of shoes: ballet flats, my very comfortable Worishofer wedges, Los Angeles Apparel jelly shoes, and kitten-heel sandals. In hindsight, I very obviously should've brought sneakers too, since there were some stunning hikes I couldn't really do without them. For swimwear, I brought pieces from Rashi World, Baserange, Frankie's Bikinis, and Miaou. And I never leave the house without sunglasses, so I was wearing my oversize pair on repeat.

I also packed my toiletries in my Leatherology train case, including Ouai travel-size shampoo and conditioner, Sofie Pavitt Face cleanser and gel moisturizer, and Rōz leave-in conditioner and hair oil.

Moving across the country is no joke. Los Angeles is known for its relaxed, sunshiny approach to style. It's often made up of simple wardrobe staples, and there's an ease to it. As I spent the month of May visiting, I found myself keeping an eye out for the trends people were actually wearing.

The first thing I noticed felt less like a trend and more in the realm of anti-trends: lots and lots of jeans. But I quickly realized the ones I kept clocking each had a bit of a je ne sais quoi to them, if you will. While we were at the Silver Lake Farmers Market one Saturday, my partner pointed out how many people were wearing basketball shorts. Further proving his observation, one of my best friends who lives in L.A. met up with us wearing a black pair with mid-calf boots.

I also went to a Charlie Beads pop-up at the DLR store, where silver ballet flats caught my attention. After that, I started noticing more and more non-black ballet flats, from baby pink to butter yellow.

If you’re looking for warm-weather shopping inspiration, there may be no better place to start than looking to fashion people in Los Angeles, where there’s practically sunshine all year long. L.A. style is often defined by its ease: laidback, relaxed, and effortlessly put together. The city is also synonymous with wellness culture, from Erewhon’s now-viral smoothies and its Pilates community to the Goop-ification of beauty.

Now, L.A. residents Stephanie Suganami and Cara Santana Leto are taking that mentality a step further by bringing the clean beauty mindset into an unexpected category: pet care.

One day, after clean beauty lover Santana Leto looked at the ingredients on the grooming wipes she was using on her dog, she realized the product had synthetic fragrance and questionable preservatives. While on a call with her best friend and now cofounder, Suganami, the two began to ask, “Why doesn’t pet care meet the same standards as beauty?”

Since then, they started Lil Luv Dog, the first EWG Verified pet care brand, with a straightforward principle: If they won't use it on themselves, they won't use it on their dogs.

Given their shared ingredient-conscious mindset and love of fashion, beauty, and wellness, the founders told me their everyday staples below.

What are each of your go-to summer staples to build your ideal capsule wardrobe?

Stephanie Suganami: Havaianas and a straw bag, and a pair of Vincent Boulevard sunnies.

What are some of your favorite basics?

SS: I think Eterne has the best collection of classic basics!

Is there an outfit formula you find yourself wearing on repeat? Or one you think you’ll be into this summer?

CSL: A hat or bandana. Face accessories, because this skin needs to be protected. So making that feel cute is my strategy.

When you think of summer style, what comes to mind, and how does that show up in your own personal style?

SS: I think of effortlessness. Whatever you can wear with ease. A silk pant from Comme Si with a vintage tee and a necklace. You can pair it with flats for the day and throw on a kitten heel for night!

CSL: Comfort. I like to feel easy and transitional for a long summer day. I usually layer from a tiny tank to oversize shirt and then a sweater for the evening, so I can enjoy the day and feel comfortable.

Do you have a trend prediction for summer 2026 or a trend that you're loving right now?

SS: Anklets and toe rings!

CSL: I think we are going to see a lot of 1970s boho. Like Chloé, Doên, Eres. I like the printed pants sets going in this direction. I love a pants set.

Is there a shoe trend you’re excited to wear?

SS: I am loving my little derby shoes I just got from Celine, and I have another cute pair from Repetto!

CSL: Black kitten thong sandals.

What does your 5-minute makeup routine for summer consist of?

SS: Refy brushed brows, Summer Fridays SPF, and some Rhode lip!

CSL: Rhode Glazing Milk, Merit Minimalist Stick, Westman Atelier Blush, Kosas Brown Gel, and Ilia mascara, and a lip balm. Rhode, Summer Fridays.

You’re bringing clean beauty into an entirely unregulated category with your new pet care line. As clean beauty advocates, what are some of your favorite clean beauty products?

SS: I love Ilia for makeup and Nécessaire body products!

CSL: I echo Steph—we love Nécessaire for body. I am obsessed with them. I love Typology for makeup. And Westman Atelier as well.

Where do you think the future of clean standards are heading next?

SS: I think consumers are becoming much more educated and are asking better questions. “Clean” can’t just be marketing anymore—people want transparency, third-party verification, sourcing information, sustainability, and efficacy. That’s really why we built Lil Luv Dog the way we did.

CSL: Completely agreed. It’s not enough to just claim “clean.” What does that mean? How are we defining that standard and, more importantly, prove it. I think transparency, visibility, and efficacy of those claims are paramount. Consumers want accountability, and that is where we are headed.

Do you have any favorite dog items to share?

SS: I love my Lil Luv Dog Daily Wipes in Oat. I just got a new hands-free leash from Mountain Dog. Binx has a Wanda collar for summer from Fren Goods that is the most adorable thing I have ever seen.

CSL: I am a Cactus girl with Lil Luv Dog—especially in summer. I use our Daily Wipe and then sprinkle in our Dry Shampoo to refresh after a beach day or Runyon. I love the Ferdinando Dog Leash; it is so chic.

Do you have an ideal dog-friendly L.A. day?

SS: We love the duck pond walk at Fryman Canyon Park!

CSL: My favorite part about L.A. is how dog-friendly the community is. We love to take our dogs to breakfast at The Pantry and then walk to Community Goods and hang out on the lawn. We can stay out all day during summer with them.

I flew straight from L.A. to Miami on an extended work trip this spring, so much of my Californian wardrobe bled into my Floridian one. In My Suitcase: Palm Springs

My time in Palm Springs was marked by Coachella—where I sported everything from grungy glitter on my eyes (an ode to the “pirate makeup” trend that Sydney Stanback, Global Trends and Insights Lead at Pinterest, reported would dominate music festival season) to color-blocked pool outfits and shimmery, sheer dresses. Though there were a few similarities between my L.A. and Palm Springs wardrobes, notably a recurring Mango square scarf (worn over my head and tied around my waist more times than I can count), the biggest difference here was the ultra-glam festival makeup. Oh, and maybe my trusty cowboy boots.

Beauty played the largest role in Palm Springs of any of my destinations, thanks to the Coachella of it all. Consider this a formal announcement: After nearly a decade living in New York City—my entire adult life practically—I'm packing up most of what fit inside my Upper West Side one-bedroom apartment and moving across the country to Los Angeles. It's kind of a big deal, one that's forced me to take a good, long look at my wardrobe and decide what inside it is worth bringing across the country. Truthfully, even when I've moved in and out of apartments here in New York, I've never done a closet clean-out this involved. I've always just haphazardly thrown my possessions into boxes and UHauled them from one part of the city to another. This time around, though, I'm leaning all the way in, which means Marie Kondo'ing my closet. If a trend isn't bringing me joy, well, it's not joining me on my New York City–to–Los Angeles move. Period.

I literally just made a spreadsheet for what to pack for a month in L.A. in May. Due to this tendency, I've asked friends before if I'm a type B of the type As or a type A of the type Bs, and the consensus is always type B of the type As. It's less that I'm so organized and more that if I don't make lists, my head feels all over the place, especially when I'm living out of a suitcase.
