Summer is (almost) here— which means sandals, straw bags, and sunglasses are back—and so are summer makeup looks. 'Tis the season to break out the bronzers, highlighters, peachy-toned blushers, and dewy skin tints, and I'm more excited than ever. Mostly because, in anticipation of a new season (and therefore the opportunity to shake up my go-to makeup looks), I've been busy stalking my Instagram feed, saving celebrity summer makeup looks to my 'makeup ideas' folder for inspiration.

As much as I wish I was an experimental makeup kinda gal, it always helps me to have a visual reference, especially when trying a new look for the first time. From Em Ratajowski's sunkissed cheeks to Zoe Kravitz's smudged cat-eye liner, these celebrity-approved summer makeup looks are certain to inspire your creativity this year. Plus, I've pulled together some on-trend product recommendations to help you pull these looks together.

1. Lilac Liner

Bright, colourful eyeliner has long since been one of my favourite ways to express my makeup creativity—especially for summer. Paired with bronzed skin and a neutral lip, it really is *chef's kiss*. However, if the idea of using a coloured liner is not really within your comfort zone, take your cue from Ms Bieber and experiment with the trend using a muted shade, such as lilac or baby pink. This pale shimmering purple is super subtle but instantly eye brightening. 

Keep the rest of your makeup fairly muted and neutral to allow the liner to take centrestage—a tinted lip balm, just a touch of blusher and bronzer, and a clear brow gel are all you need to complete this look.

2. Draped Blush

It's official, 2023 really is the year of blusher—as proven here by Lizzo in a look that is all about the cheeks. You may have already heard of blush draping, a technique which sees blusher applied along the cheekbones rather than solely on the apples of the cheeks. Similarly to contouring, this helps to lift the cheekbones and elongate the face. It's easy to achieve and looks great on everyone.

Again, because this look is colour-heavy, try to keep the rest of your makeup neutral. Take a leaf from Lizzo's book and opt for natural-looking faux lashes, a brown toned matte lip, and immaculately groomed brows.

3. Fresh Faced

I'm every bit as obsessed with Sofia Richie's honeymoon makeup as I was with her wedding makeup. This fresh-faced natural look is exactly what I'll be wearing on hot summer's days, because layers of foundation and concealer is not it. To achieve this no makeup-makeup look, a subtly tinted base, a dewy lip balm, clear brow gel, and cream blusher is all you need.

4. Orange Pop

When it comes to glam, evening-appropriate makeup looks for summer, you can always count on the Kardashians for inspiration. I'm honestly obsessed with everything about this look—the lashes, the brows, the matte lip, the slicked back hair, and of course, the fun pop of orange pigment.

Again, this is a really great way to experiment with colourful makeup without needing a 16-pan eyeshadow palette and 15 different eyeshadow brushes. In fact it's so easy, you could even use your fingers to apply the pop of colour. Add lashes, a liquid lip, and a soft dusting of bronzer, and you're done.

5. Soft Cat-Eye

I've lost count of how many images of Zoe Kravitz's eyeliner looks I've saved on Instagram—she gets it right, every single time. The secret to pulling off this look is a super sharp pencil eyeliner, applied with a tightlining technique so as to appear as soft and natural as possible. To tightline, you'll want to angle your liner upwards into your lashline, applying pigment in amongst the roots of your lashes rather than above them.

Ensure that your entire lashline is covered, then extend downwards a little in your inner corners and upwards in the outer. This look isn't about precision, so don't worry if your flick isn't perfect. Finish by using a precision smudging brush to soften the liner and blend out the cat-eye.

6. Sunkissed Sheen

If summer could be summed up in one makeup look, it would be this one. Glowing skin, bronzed cheeks, and strategically placed highlighter really are the holy trifecta of summer makeup.

Although Hilary's sunkissed skin looks totally natural, this look is heavy on the bronzer. Use a matte product to sculpt, followed by a shimmery formula to add warmth where the sun hits, and finally, a cream highlighter to add sheen to the high points of the face.

7. Faux Glow

Whilst we'd certainly never advocate sunburned skin, it has to be said that a skin faux sunkissed effect is majorly trending in makeup this summer. Whether you use a blusher or a bronzer, all else you need is a large fluffy brush to recreate this look—just dust the pigment loosely over your cheeks and nose.

8. Peachy Bronze

Speaking of peach, when it comes to blusher and bronzer, we're seeing warm, orange-toned products taking centre stage in so many celebrity makeup looks this year. The great thing about a peachy cheek product is that you can also use it as eyeshadow, which is a great way to tie your look together. Throw a matching lipstick into the look à la Rochelle Humes, and your look is complete.

Stars, they're just like us. That phrase has possibly never rung truer than when Lizzo posted a TikTok video recently urging fans to "get unready with her." In the video, Lizzo explained that her skin has been irritated while she's been on tour. "I have extremely sensitive skin, so if I have scented soaps—and I accidentally used scented soap at one of the hotels—it will break me out and make me itchy," the singer shared in the video.

"There's nothing wrong with having texture on your skin," Lizzo said. "My problem is the issue is the itchiness that's been happening and the irritation."

To start her ultra-gentle skincare routine, Lizzo reached for Cetaphil's Gentle Skin Cleanser. "This is what my makeup artist recommended to wash my face with," she shared. Using a few pumps, Lizzo not only lathered her face with the cleanser, but she also spread some on her chest to calm irritation there too. 

Next, Lizzo spread a thin layer of First Aid Beauty's Arnica Relief & Rescue Mask all over her skin, rubbing it in until it absorbed. Arnica helps soothe and speed up skin healing. 

For the final step of her skincare routine, the singer applied the Dr. Jart Cicapair Tiger Grass Calming Serum Mask to soothe and moisturize. Tiger grass helps calm irritation and redness, so it's the perfect ingredient to mix into an irritation-reducing skincare routine. A good lip pencil is worth its weight in liquid gold. Too often, lip pencils have too much drag to go on smoothly, aren't pigmented enough, or don't have staying power to them. Lizzo obviously knows this, which is why the singer opted to wear Refy's Lip Sculpt for the debut of her brand Yitty’s Fall Color Haul.

Whether or not it's official, every award show has a theme. That rang true at last night's MTV Video Music Awards. Sartorially, the theme (much like Taylor Swift's new album) could be described as midnight—nearly every star on the red carpet was wearing black or a dark hue.

When it comes to truly outrageous fashion choices in the music scene, no one is doing it quite like Doja Cat. Whether she’s accepting an award looking like a glamorous worm, wearing an outfit made out of astroturf, or sporting a bedazzled merkin, we can always count on the singer to be wearing something that has never been seen before. And it’s all thanks to Brett Alan Nelson. The creative director and stylist has been working with Doja for years, and is the genius behind so many of those conversation-starting looks, including the music videos for her latest album, Planet Her.

Nelson has also dressed famous clients such as Lizzo, Grimes, and Bebe Rexha, but it’s his prolific work with Doja Cat that truly goes unmatched. Read on for some excerpts from the conversation including how he and Doja come up with their imaginative visual worlds, taking risks for something that feels iconic, and advice on what to wear—and not to wear—to Coachella. You've said you have a common language with Doja. Can you talk to me a little bit about how some of those early conversations went [for Planet Her] and what your process is like for putting together such a huge concept? 

There has to be some sense of common communication because, especially in the music world, these girls can feel very forced into what they're wearing. For Doja, I was always like … "If you are inspired by anything, show me art. Show me movies. Let's look at nature. Let's find this." just to make something feel more fresh. When it comes to the creation behind these videos, I start having very early conversations with her, and then we'll talk to the director, and we'll get a nice streamline together with her first notes. And then I'll go deeper with them to really bring it into Planet Her because we really wanted everything to flow together. As different as each video is, there still is some sort of common thread. … If we wanted to release a film, they would all fit together. 

But when it comes to the creation of clothes, it comes from being told "no" for so long. Obviously, I want my girl in the biggest names of fashion that I can get her in, but when you're a new artist, nobody cares. They just look at you. I was told no so many times that I was just like, "Screw it. I'm going to do everything on my own." So I would start sketching and reach out to different designers that I would very fully collaborate with. It all starts from the sketches. I'll make mood boards, but they're usually more visually inspired than they are fashion inspired. 

For the video "Get Into It (Yuh)," we've got some incredible space galaxy moments. It's so creative and interesting in a way that it really feels like art. Can you walk me through that process and concept? And do you ever get to a moment where you're like, "Oh, no, we need one more look"? Is it really sorted all before you get on set?

I trained under B. Akerlund, who is a god, and she would have five hotel rooms filled with clothes, but I just can't prep like that. It stresses me out. It costs so much money. She does what she does, and she's the queen at it, and I grovel to her feet. But for this video, in particular, Doja, again, had a very short idea where she was like, "I want to build a story line about an alien stealing my cat." And so that's what [the director] Mike Diva did. And that video, for me… I don't know if this movie rings true—and Mike would probably kill me for saying this—but Zenon: Girl of the 21st Century, it's like a more highbrow version of that. When it came to the costuming, I had a collaboration with Michael Schmidt. I just wanted to build this queen-commander look that didn't feel too masculine. For Doja, if she was the queen of Planet Her, which she is, we want something that feels sexy and cool. We 3D-scanned her body and molded this white bust piece on her that had this almost Victorian hoop that goes around her back. Originally, the clear parts that she ended up keeping were not supposed to be there. It was supposed to be skin. She's like, "No, I want to keep it clear." And I was a little nervous about it at first, but it felt like armor, which made it feel more commander, and it was perfectly paired with this beautiful pink satin. And then I got a pair of Pleaser 10-inch pumps that I just covered in fabric so they looked like a huge wedge.

How do you know how to do that?

Honestly, I fake it till I make it every time. I feel like I always have ideas of things that I know will work, and when I go to these people that I'm collaborating with, they're like, "It's not gonna work." But I go back and I'm like, "You can't tell me it's not gonna work if we don't try it." I will always want to take the risk of doing something that feels iconic because, for me, in the grand scheme of things—like when we're on our world tour—I want all of these looks in glass boxes. I want people to go back and remember. It's the Gaga effect. You want people to see these amazing creations that people have built because they are museum-worthy art pieces. 

For our listeners who are getting ready for Coachella and want some practical style advice for all of their upcoming outdoor shows, what would you recommend? What feels fresh? What would you like to see people wearing?

This could not sit well with some people. But my only advice of what not to wear to Coachella is a flower crown. We've seen it, and unless you're giving me something special, I don't want to see a flower crown. But I'm a big fan of Coachella. I've gone for 10 years in a row. I think it is so fresh to see every different walk of different kinds of people dressed in what they feel comfortable in partying in. And obviously, it gets really windy and dusty, so you got to have your face covers. But for me, I think grunge is coming back. So give me Courtney Love. Give me a ripped-up babydoll dress with fairy wings and a crown made out of pipe cleaners. You can buy them at any arts and crafts store. My biggest thing, especially as a creator and as a fashion person, is to have fun and be comfortable in what you're wearing. Who cares what anyone else thinks about? Just do what feels cool to you. There are no rules. There are no limits. I mean, Euphoria has taken over the planet. I'm sure everyone will have glitter on their face and sparkles. Just have fun.

Once upon a time in Hollywood, Gucci creative director (and close pal of Harry Styles) Alessandro Michele threw a star-studded runway show on Hollywood Boulevard. And of course, everyone dressed for the occasion, including Dakota Johnson. I'm a Recent Acupuncture Convert—Here's Everything You Need to Know

About a year ago, I was in what you might call a "rut.” The pandemic was taking its toll on my mind and body, and I needed some sort of relief for my constant headaches, back pain, anxiety, and general sense of existential dread. Enter Elizabeth Roper Wilde, L.Ac., MSTOM, licensed acupuncturist, and plant-based herbalist at Wilde and Well in Astoria, New York. I started seeing her once a week to address all of the above (and whatever else I needed help with each visit), and slowly but surely, things started to improve. 

Until I first walked into Wilde’s plant-filled space, I was petrified of acupuncture. I’m needle-averse (I’ve fainted on more than one occasion while getting shots), and needed a bit of convincing. But truth be told, there is truly nothing to be afraid of: The needles feel like nothing at all (or if anything, a "zing,” as she calls them), and if there’s ever anything slightly uncomfortable, I just let her know and we try again. Best of all, at the end of each session, there’s a bonus treatment—think gua sha, cupping, or even massages. 

If you’ve been on the fence about trying acupuncture, or you’re simply curious about this tentpole of traditional Chinese medicine, I asked Wilde, along with Kelly Zhu, general manager at Liangtse Wellness in New York City, to share their endless expertise. Keep reading to learn everything you need to know before your first session, including the benefits, what it can treat, and more.

What Is Acupuncture?

Think of it—and stay with me—like a reset of your body’s energy pathways. "Acupuncture is a technique which utilizes fine, sterile, single-use needles on specific locations of the body, known as acupuncture points. Points lay on pathways or channels of the body called meridians,” explains Wilde. "Qi, or energy, flows through these meridians and can be accessed through acupuncture points.” Essentially, as these points are activated, that energy realigns. "Acupuncture and Chinese medicine can help to identify and treat imbalances that may be contributing to pain or illness,” says Wilde. "The goal of acupuncture is to achieve balance or homeostasis. When there is disharmony within the body, pain, and disease are present.”

What Can Acupuncture Treat?

Acupuncture can help patients "with a wide range of diseases and conditions,” according to Zhu. Wilde agrees, adding that "There are hundreds of clinical studies confirming the efficacy of acupuncture for the treatment of musculoskeletal pain [such as] back pain, neck pain, and knee pain, plus migraine, anxiety and depression, digestive disorders, insomnia, fertility, endocrine disorders, and more.” Wilde also notes that "Chinese medicine is its own system of medicine. Acupuncture is just one of the tools used within Chinese medicine and can be used to successfully treat a wide variety of conditions.”

What Are the Benefits of Acupuncture?

Zhu breaks it down from both modern and TCM perspectives. "In traditional Chinese medicine, the general benefits of acupuncture can be to improve the movement of qi and blood, tonify the deficiency, and improve the immune system.” Whereas in modern medicine, she explains, it’s seen to "improve blood circulation [and] stimulate the central nervous system in order to be calm and relaxed.” 

In addition, Wilde says one of the body’s best-known happy chemicals plays a role. "Acupuncture causes the body to produce endorphins—the body’s natural painkillers and ‘feel good’ chemicals,” she says. "In addition to inhibiting pain perception, endorphins can also affect mood, making acupuncture great for treating anxiety and depression.”

And the more you go, the more likely you are to see results. "It is hard to predict how many acupuncture sessions it will take to treat any given condition, but acupuncture does work best as a cumulative effect,” explains Wilde. "It is unlikely that just one session will cure any ailment. It takes time for a body to get to a state of imbalance, it takes time to correct it as well.” Still, she says you may experience some relief off the bat. "Depending on the condition, I may expect some improvement with the first visit, but multiple visits really work best to achieve lasting relief.”

What Are the Side Effects of Acupuncture?

It may be hard to believe, but I can tell you firsthand that acupuncture is nearly painless. "Acupuncture is considered to be a low-risk procedure. It is very safe if you have a licensed, competent practitioner,” explains Wilde. "The most common side effects with acupuncture may be soreness or in rare cases, bruising at the insertion point.”

There’s also no recovery time necessary. "Acupuncture works best as a cumulative effect, so the more acupuncture done upfront, the quicker you see results,” says Wilde, adding, "It is not uncommon for patients to come in several times a week for treatment.”

Who Is a Candidate for Acupuncture?

Due to the vast array of health issues acupuncture can address, it’s essentially universal. "Acupuncture is for everybody,” says Wilde. And because each treatment is personalized based on the patient’s concerns, things like injuries can be factored in. "Treatments are tailored to the individual so modifications can be made if necessary,” says Wilde. That said, be sure to communicate as much as possible. "It is important, however, to let your practitioner know your full health history and to make them aware of any health conditions,” explains Wilde. "For example, while it is absolutely safe for pregnant women to receive acupuncture, there are certain points that may be avoided until the patient is full term.”

What to Expect During Your First Session

First things first: Try to relax. "The first session can be nervous because people think they will be poked by a needle,” says Zhu. Be sure to tell your practitioner it’s your first time, although they will likely have a ton of questions prepped for you regardless. "A first session includes a thorough intake to discuss chief complaints and to identify any imbalances within the body,” explains Wilde. "During this intake, the acupuncturist will also feel the patient’s pulse and look at the tongue. This sounds strange but these are actually important diagnostic tools in Chinese medicine that help provide a roadmap of the patient's health.” 

Once you and your practitioner have covered all your bases, you’ll lie either face down or face up (depending on what issues you’re addressing), and your acupuncturist will start to insert the needles. "Most of the time patients will feel nothing. Sometimes there can be pressure, numbness or a shooting sensation, it is all normal,” says Zhu. If anything is painful, mention it to your practitioner so they can remove the needle. Once they’ve finished (and ensured you’re comfortable), they’ll leave you to rest for 20–30 minutes. "After needles are removed, an additional modality may be used such as cupping, gua sha, massage, or moxibustion,” says Wilde.

How to Find the Right Acupuncturist

The most important thing is making sure they are licensed to practice acupuncture in your state. You can use a registry like the American Society of Acupuncturists or the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine to find someone close to you, and you can look up reviews on Zocdoc as well. Some health insurance policies also cover acupuncture, so it’s also worth checking your provider’s own network to find a practitioner who takes your insurance. Depending on where you live and where you go, acupuncture can cost between $50 to $150+ a session, so insurance can be a big help in covering that cost.

Lizzo loves experimenting with fun fashion trends on the red carpet and on Instagram—look no further than her most recent post as proof. But when she's out running errands, her outfits are decidedly more laidback. Photographed in Los Angeles this week, Lizzo went casual in a couple of affordable pieces: Torrid's White Scoop Neck Foxy Cami ($14) and Bombshell Skinny Jeans Premium Stretch in Medium Wash ($60). Per a press release, the jeans are one of Torrid's most popular styles, and over one million pairs have been sold. Impressive.

It is impossible not to root for Lizzo. Although the three-time Grammy Award winner was not nominated this year (hey, it's been a tough one for all of us), it was a joy to see Lizzo grace the 63rd annual Grammys stage as a presenter. Not only did she give out the award for Best New Artist to fellow Houstonian, Megan Thee Stallion, but also looked damn good doing so while channeling shimmery mermaid realness in not just one, but two looks over the course of the evening. 

Working with stylist Brett Alan Nelson to create her looks for the night, Lizzo's pastel gowns, both by Balmain, were complemented by several pieces of beautiful Bulgari jewelry and flawless makeup done by Alexx Mayo using all Charlotte Tilbury products. While she switched up her dress and shoes, the "Because I Love You" singer sported her Bulgari baubles—including the brand's classic Serpenti styles in a necklace, bracelets, and rings which included over 267 carats of diamonds—throughout the event.

How long have you been working with Lizzo? Is there a favorite look that comes to mind?

I have been working with Lizzo on a variety of projects over the last two years. My favorite look that I have done with her so far was our Rolling Stone cover with David LaChapelle. 

How would you describe Lizzo's red carpet style? Is there a specific feeling you're going for on Grammys night?

I always keep the disco era in mind when working with Lizzo. She’s such an icon, so I want to play up the iconic legends of that era but make it our own!

What type of jewelry did you have in mind for Lizzo's looks?

I knew Bulgari was the moment. They are such a legendary jewelry brand, and the Serpenti pieces were just so fitting with both dresses.

How has COVID-19 and the nature of remote awards shows been a challenge for you as a celeb stylist?

COVID has been terrible, honestly. Everything is virtual. But as a creative, I always want to give people a space to escape with us and enjoy the moment.

Any tips for viewers at home on achieving their own red carpet-worthy look?

Always have fun! Don’t worry about what anyone else says. If you feel happy and are having fun, then that’s all that matters.
