If I hadn't already known that the new season of Emily in Paris was coming soon, thanks to the little red notification on my Netflix account, the fact that the cast had arrived at Gare d’Austerlitz, a train station in Paris, wearing peak French fashion would have given it away. If it weren't for the series's signature out-there wardrobe choices, I would have questioned the outfit star Lily Collins was spotted in at the station, but because Emily Cooper's been known to walk on the bold side sartorially ever since season one, her lingerie-esque ensemble fit right in.

Thanks to a clever marketing move by Netflix, season four of Emily in Paris was split into two parts, and the show got two press tours because of it. That means lots and lots of Lily Collins outfits (which rival what Emily Cooper wears on the screen). I've noticed a theme among her outfits for press tour part two, and it's that many of them contain one '90s-inspired item, in particular.

The item that Collins is fully embracing for many of her appearances in NYC and Paris in recent days is the oversize blazer with structured shoulders. We've made it: After weeks of reeling from the first five drama-filled, sartorially thrilling episodes, we're finally able to binge the second half of Emily in Paris season four. Or should I say… Emily in Rome?

While our beloved titular character has been situated in Paris for the past three seasons, she's swapping one capital for another with an impromptu Italian getaway. "She reaches a point when she needs to have some time off from the drama, so she decides to go on a Roman holiday," Aurélie Payen, the show's lead makeup artist, tells Who What Wear. I won't spoil the juicy tidbits leading up to her travels—you'll just have to tune in to part two!—but I do have exclusive intel on Lily Collins's Audrey Hepburn–inspired glam.

Emily, overall, has never been more settled in her American-Parisian identity, and her beauty looks reflect that confidence. "When Emily arrived in Paris, she was not as elevated [or] settled in the industry as she is right now," Payen says. "She also gets a little bit older, so she's more aware of her beauty vibe. She knows what she wants." A nod to Hepburn's Old Hollywood elegance just makes sense, especially when Emily has a little Roman Holiday moment of her own—see below for every product, tip, and detail.

You can't miss it: From her button-down blouse to her striped necktie, Emily is clearly channeling Hepburn's Princess Anne in Roman Holiday. According to Payen, her fresh-faced glam is also a nod to the iconic actress, and it happens to be one of her favorite looks from the season.

"You can easily imagine yourself with this kind of makeup and reproduce it," she says. All you need is a flick of eyeliner—Payen uses the Kitten Flick Liquid Eyeliner from Lisa Eldridge, praising its "very precise" tip—and a matte brown lip. "Matte brown lips are one of my favorites," she shares. For Collins, she uses a mauve-brown Prada Lipstick that beautifully complements the necktie's royal-blue hue.

She finishes off the eyes with a coat of Dior's Pump 'n' Volume Mascara. "This is the mascara I use on myself and my clients," she shares. "[It's] my favorite of all time. The color will stay strong and black, as I like, and it doesn't fall." You know when your mascara flakes off throughout the day, resulting in pesky black flecks underneath your eyes? Dior's doesn't dare.

To groom Collins's enviously fluffy brows (a trait she shares with Hepburn!), Payen grabs a waterproof eyebrow pen from Benefit Cosmetics. It has a three-pronged tip, which helps her create the most natural hairlike strokes. She then locks everything into place with a clear brow gel from Anastasia Beverly Hills. "I also love Charlotte Tilbury's clear brow gel; it's one of the best on the market right now," she adds.

Emily also takes a trip to the French Alps to visit Camille's family ski chalet, and her mountain ensemble is a dead ringer for Hepburn's après-ski look in Charade—right down to the mod '60s sunnies. Payen, again, pays homage to Hepburn's glam by focusing on a mauve-brown color story for the lips and cheeks. "Those brown-ish kinds of colors really go with the costume created by Marylin Fitoussi," she says.

Rather than dusting on a shimmery bronzer (which tends to read more glowy and summery), she uses Makeup by Mario's SoftSculpt Cream Contour & Bronzer Stick to add some definition to Collins's features. "It's more about having a contour shade to enhance [her] natural cheekbones," she explains.

For the base, Payen uses a light layer of foundation over sunscreen—always sunscreen. "I'm always working with sunscreen products, but when you're at a place like the Alps, which is very high and where the sun is very strong, we had to use really good sunscreen," she explains. Her product of choice? 111Skin's Repair Sunscreen SPF 50. "I love to use this one in particular [for makeup looks] and then apply foundation on top of it," she adds.

I don't really think this needs to be said, but I'm going to say it anyway. There isn't much that actress Lily Collins can't pull off. Whether it's a pink feathered cape à la Emily in Paris (now back for a fourth season!) or, let's say, a dark suede bob haircut, she manages to make everything look so damn chic.

Whoa, right? I pounced at the opportunity for more info, so I asked Schwartz for all the details on this rich, chic shade he's coined "dark suede."

What Is Dark Suede?

Schwartz describes dark suede as a chic, classic brunette that looks so decadent and, dare I say, expensive. Not only is this the perfect color to sport for fall, but it also flatters so many skin tones. Like your favorite suede boots, this one feels warm, soft, velvety, and even a little bit cozy. While my natural hair color is slightly darker than this, I'm now fully contemplating going for this hue to switch things up. Collins never lets me down in the inspo department.

How to Achieve the Dark Suede Look

You might be surprised to know that Collins's hue is actually courtesy of a demipermanent color. Schwartz shared the deets. "I used a demipermanent color line from Schwarzkopf Professional called Igora Vibrance to make her [hair] darker," he shares.

Amazingly enough, you can buy this demipermanent line yourself on Amazon! I've been considering experimenting with semipermanent and demipermanent hair color myself, and this was exactly the push I needed. If you don't trust yourself to execute this as flawlessly as Schwartz, though, I definitely understand. If you'd feel more comfortable taking this shade to your colorist, here's what Schwartz recommends. "Make sure you tell your colorist you want demipermanent and ash on the roots and gold toward the ends," he says.

In terms of the exact shades Schwartz used, he started with Igora Vibrance shade 6-0 around the hairline. For the roots, he went in with the shades 5-1 and 6-0, and then used the shades 6-5 and 6-0 all over. He mixed all of these with the Igora Vibrance Activating Gel ($19) and a bit of Olaplex No.1 all over the hair.

When she's not working, you can't blame her for dressing far more low-key than her character. Growing up, I never liked having naturally thick, bold brows. Thin brows were in, so I did everything in my power to shrink mine (or at least make them appear half their size with the help of caked-on concealer). So when big-brow It girls like Cara Delevingne, Lily Collins, and Zendaya broke on to the scene, I welcomed back my brows with open arms and finally laid off the concealer. But then I was faced with my next challenge: learning how to wear them. That's when I was introduced to the magic of soap brows—an old Hollywood trick to sculpting and fluffing your brows to their fullest potential without opting for brow lamination, caking on eyebrow wax, or relying entirely on a pencil and spoolie.

What Are Soap Brows?

I tapped celebrity makeup artist Katie Mellinger to give us the scoop on the trend. "Soap brows refers to a technique of creating a brow shape using a glycerin-based soap to sculpt the brow shape, usually in an upward motion, to give a laminated look," she says. If you have any visible spots or patchiness in the brows, Mellinger recommends filling them in with pencil or a shadow before reaching for the soap.

Once the soap is on, there'll be no way to fill in those pesky spots. A spoolie is then lightly misted with water or a setting spray (dampening it but not soaking it so your glycerin-based soap won't sud). The spoolie is then scraped lightly back and forth in the soap to build up a paste. "When applying to your brow, start at the base and comb upward in the desired shape," she says. "For a laminated look, this is generally about 23 degrees outward for the inner part of your brow (or toward the outer corner of your hairline) and 45 degrees (or toward the top of your ear) for the outer part of your brow." 

How to Pull Off Soap Brows

If you're ready to finally give soap brows a try, follow these steps below that Mellinger swears by to help achieve them. All you'll need is a clear, glycerin-based soap, wax, or gel and an easy-to-use spoolie to whip your brows into shape in minutes—no brow-lamination appointment required. The trick is to pay special attention to coating all hairs, making sure none go without a layer of soap paste for a smooth finish.

Step 1. If you're creating them using soap rather than a wax or gel, opt for a clear, glycerin-based soap. This will ensure there is no color or white cast transferred to the brow.

Step 2. Avoid getting the spoolie too wet. "You don't want to make the paste too slippery or sudsy, or it won't stay in place," explains Mellinger.

Step 3. Don't dig into the soap too much with your spoolie, as it will make the paste too thick. A paste that is too thick and dry won't stick well.

Step 4. After you've achieved your ideal shape, try carefully smoothing it out with your finger for an extra-laminated look.

Mellinger also happens to keep a few products in her kit at all times to create the perfect soap brow look, starting with West Barn Co's Soap Brows Extra Strong and Prep Mist. "This is my favorite for my kit, as it's small and comes in a tin—very kit friendly." For an affordable option, Melligner uses a disposable spoolie with Pears' classic Pure Gentle Soap. "People often get scared by a brow lamination, but I assure them they won’t be stuck to their head, and it’s possible to adapt the result to suit each individual.”

It’s also easy to achieve this look using makeup. Rather than using pencils and powders to fill in brows, look to more malleable formulas like gels and pomades, which allow you to sculpt hairs into the desired shape. The key is to ensure hairs look separated so brows appear fluffy rather than blocky.

I no longer care if they look overly thick. Instead, I’ve learned to embrace their natural shape. I enhance with just a touch of clear brow gel, and I’ve started using brow serums to address the gaps in them that I used to fill in with pencil. "People are focusing more on using brow treatments that they can maintain their brows with rather than layering loads of products on,” says Hart. "I myself have super full brows, so applying a thick product is just not needed,” she adds. 

If you’re not ready to step away from your brow routine, just take a softer approach. "Try a skinny brow pencil if you’re into more definition but apply it super soft on the skin so you can build it gradually,” says Hart. "I’ll still sometimes use pomade for my clients but the tiniest bit ever on an angled brush to create hair-like strokes, and you can always use a spoolie to remove any access product.”

There are only a few things I know to be undeniably true. First, the best hair days tend to happen when you have no plans and you're not going to be leaving the house (naturally). Second, a breakout is sure to appear on the eve of a big event, like a birthday, job interview, graduation, or wedding (it's just the way it is). Third, French-girl beauty will never go out of style (this is an absolute). 

The latter has been proven time and time again. Whether it's the popularity of French beauty brands or trending French skincare secrets, everyone knows there's a classic and timeless aspect to it. And that's certainly true when it comes to French hairstyles, like Birkin bangs.

According to Tatum Neill, Creative Director of Aveda Arts & Sciences Institute, "Birkin Bangs are a soft version of a full framed fringe that dates back to '60s fashion icon Jane Birkin. They have a square shape to them much like the Hermès Birkin Bag but they do not read as geometric and blunt." 

He recommends bringing photos to the salon so you get the exact result you desire. "The best way to ensure you get the right look is to come with photos and an idea of where you want them to sit. They can be placed below, at, or above the eyebrow and should extend beyond the eyes and open up your face. Be sure to discuss your hair texture and growth patterns to ensure that they sit right and don't pop up too much when you style at home. The bangs should be cut with a little disheveled precession so they maintain a square shape but feel soft and piecey."

Getting the right cut is half the battle. Styling them is the other half. Luckily, Neill has some advice for that, too. Start with clean, damp hair and blow dry your bangs with a small paddle brush or a fine-tooth comb. "You want to follow your brush or comb with your blow-dryer with a back-and-forth movement so the hair doesn't part in any particular direction," he explains. "Once dry you can use a lightweight hair spray like Aveda's Air Control (£24) to piece some of the ends together to give it that effortless French look." Easy, right?

The first thing I notice about Lily Collins is that she’s cut her chestnut locks into a thick fringe. While it covers enough of her forehead to obscure her famously fluffy brows, the fresh look somehow feels remarkably fitting. It’s so fitting, in fact, that the moment when Emily in Paris costume designer Marylin Fitoussi laid eyes on it, she declared, "Oh, now I know where we’re going in season three for your character.” Emily Cooper wouldn’t exist without Lily Collins, but it’s Emily who gives us a glimpse into Collins’s most charismatic real-life qualities too. As showrunner Darren Star aptly put it, the success of a series like Emily in Paris stands on the shoulders of a single person. Enter Collins.

"Work is so much a part of who I am,” effuses a bubbly Collins. Of all the qualities they share, there’s one major resemblance that the actress bears to her starring character in Netflix’s smash-hit comedy series, and it’s the fact that they’re both exceptionally self-assured. "And I’m very much like my character [Emily]. I love what I do,” she continues. "I’m unapologetically work driven. But I’m also unapologetically life driven.” Just like it’s hard not to fall in love with the bright, bold, and eternally optimistic Emily—despite the bumps in her fish-out-of-water experience as an American living in France—it’s hard not to fall under the intoxicating spell of Collins. You see, the Emmy-nominated actress, budding producer, and Time100 Next recipient possesses a lightheartedness that’s impossible to ignore.

When we connected over Zoom last month, her image appeared across my screen, and she was fresh-faced and clad in a simple crew-neck sweater. She was perched in the middle of a bed in the guest room of her Los Angeles home, a carefully chosen spot where there would be minimal noise since our conversation was also being recorded for the Who What Wear podcast. It’s that kind of thoughtfulness that makes Collins, well, Collins. Indeed, as soon as I brought up our cover shoot, she eagerly recounted the details of the day, insisting that she relished the chance to experiment with the grungier hair, makeup, and styling, which are—let’s be honest—a sharp departure from Collins’s more polished preferences. It’s at this moment that I get the sense that, when she shows up for something, she really shows up. Nothing is half-baked in the world of Lily Collins.

Over the course of our hour-and-a-half-long conversation, I come to learn that there’s no topic too light or too deep for Collins, and the range of what we covered is a testament to that. No matter what we discussed—be it the polarized reception of Emily in Paris, her mix-breed rescue Redford, or the importance of going to therapy—Collins brought a certain levity to all subject matter. They say that how you do anything is how you do everything, and I’m beginning to get the idea that Collins does everything with curiosity and openness. 

Despite being born in the English countryside to performer Phil Collins and Jill Tavelman, Collins spent most of her formative years in Los Angeles, where she went on to earn a degree in journalism from USC. As a teenager, Collins wrote a column, NY Confidential, for the British magazine Elle Girl. She has also written for Seventeen, Teen Vogue, and the Los Angeles Times. Although writing was one of her first creative outlets, Collins has never been a stranger to the camera—her first on-screen credit coming at the age of 2 for the BBC series Growing Pains. But it wasn’t until age 20 that Collins landed her breakout role in 2009’s The Blind Side, and she went on to star in audience favorites such as Mirror Mirror (2012), Love, Rosie (2014), and Rules Don’t Apply (2016), the latter of which earned her a Golden Globe nomination.

Despite the many noteworthy roles under Collins’s belt, there’s no denying that playing Emily in Emily in Paris is the thing that has propelled the career actress to a new level of fame. Before the Netflix series, you may have known her for one of her many previous projects or perhaps simply for her consistently dazzling ensembles that have been a staple on red carpets for over a decade, but regardless, the name Lily Collins has officially reached household status.

The Emmy-winning show is irresistible in its sweetness and intoxicating in its optimism. The outfits alone, for which iconic Sex and the City wardrober Patricia Field was a consultant, are a feast for the eyes. In a single day, Emily might change three or four times, rotating between a series of looks that are highly colour coordinated, rarely practical, and always finished off with towering heels and the latest It bag. "It’s a suspension of disbelief,” Collins says, speaking to some of the unrealistic elements that critics have been shouting about since the first season aired in 2020. It’s that total investment in the story line that separates the Emily in Paris lovers from the haters. "We want to have the fashion be the fashion. And maybe she has a storage unit somewhere,” she jokes.

But in all seriousness, Collins seems to have an answer to the many criticisms the show faces. She tells me that from the get-go the aim was always to further explore French culture and the French language and infuse new ideas as the show progressed and received the green light for more seasons. "You only get to do a certain amount in season one,” she explains. "So when the show comes out and you have criticism/feedback, it’s an opportunity if you get to go to a season two to take note of what people thought, what their opinions were, what mattered to people, and what people were concerned about. That’s the beauty of listening to an audience and seeing what matters to people.” There it is, the infectious optimism of Collins.

Just like its influencer heroine, Emily in Paris just keeps capturing attention. While the internet had a lot to say about the 2021 nominations, the comedy nonetheless prevailed during the award season, garnering two Golden Globe nominations and two from the Emmys. It’s a testament to just how much the show has captured the hearts of its audience. Although Collins and the rest of the production never could have anticipated the global events of 2020, the arrival of the series to our Netflix queues late that year serendipitously came at a time when we most needed to take a mental break from the bleakness of the moment and dive into its super-sweet fantasy.

At the time of our chat, Collins was preparing to embark on a press tour for the show’s third season. While Emily in Paris may be the focus now, she’s admittedly never one to sit still and is already working to establish another title for herself: producer. The transition into producing has become somewhat of a Hollywood default for actors with a certain level of seniority. After all, it makes sense that after years of interpreting other people’s stories you’d want to have more agency to tell your own, too. Collins retains all the passion of an acting veteran turned producer, but refreshingly, her approach to this next chapter is devoid of ego. "I don’t need to be the one telling these stories all the time,” she insists. "I want to empower others to be the face in front of the camera. If it’s not right for me, it’s right for somebody else.” Whether or not she’s the one in front of the camera, Collins feels that producing has "always been a natural fit.”

In fact, her entire demeanor visibly shifts when I bring up the topic. A relatively new venture for her, Collins attached producer to her credits on Emily in Paris, beginning in the second season, as well as the 2022 Netflix drama Windfall, directed by Collins’s husband, Charlie McDowell. But based on our conversation, the two titles are only the beginning. After the film proved to McDowell and Collins just how well their relationship can work in a professional setting, Collins told me the two have been full speed ahead on their creative collaborations. I joke that their dinner-table conversions must be one big brainstorm. She confirms, "Some of the most exciting creative conversations I’ve had in the last six months—if not even three weeks—have been about things that I’m behind the camera on.” Talk about passion projects.

If Emily in Paris is over-the-top in its production, set, and wardrobe, then Windfall is its antithesis. A true COVID project, the dark drama features a cast of just four, was shot at a single location, and writes Collins into a role that is everything Emily Cooper is not. Her character wears one rather plain outfit throughout the film—just jeans and flats—and doesn’t even have a name. The film sees her character, simply referred to as "wife,” slowly unraveling mentally, and the irony was that Collins and McDowell were literally planning their wedding, picking out flowers and everything, in between takes. "He’d always be like, ‘Well, at least now I can see the furthest that you can go and what you’re like when you’re really mad.’ I was like, ‘I’m getting it out now,’” she says. But in all seriousness, experimenting with a diversity of roles isn’t just fun for Collins. She says it’s creatively necessary. "I’ve always wanted to bop in and out of different genres never to be put in a box, especially playing a character like Emily where I get to do it season after season (and hopefully for more seasons to come),” she explains. "But she’s a very specific character, and I need to creatively step outside that and play something very different.”

Light and dark. Optimist and realist. These aren’t just the dualities that define Collins’s current acting gigs. They expose the depth of her real-life emotional landscape too. Just beyond her bubbly exterior lies a version of Collins that’s actively healing by confronting her darkness. Her 2017 memoir titled Unfiltered: No Shame, No Regrets, Just Me explores her battles with mental health, including the eating disorder she suffered as a teenager. It’s something she now sees as a source of hope and self-healing: "The more I opened up and talked about my past struggles, the more I can relate and connect to people, connect with myself, and further my journey.” It was that same year that she did To the Bone, a film that explores eating disorders, which she says was positive for herself as well as the audiences that saw their own struggles and experiences in it. "And then I do something like Emily [in Paris], where you can heal through laughter at a time when the world needed to remember what joy felt like or laughter felt like or travel felt like. And as I do that for audiences, I’m also doing it for myself,” she says. There she goes injecting that signature levity into the topic.

Collins is loudly outspoken about her mental health journey, and her willingness to be open about her struggles is a bright light in a spot of darkness that many young people, and really anybody, may face. Whether it’s going to therapy (which she’s a big proponent of), getting it out on the page ("I journal every day in the morning and at night. I love the Five Minute Journal”), or channeling it into her acting work, Collins insists that "art is healing, whether it makes you cry or makes you laugh.” 

It’s with that last remark that my image of Lily Collins starts to solidify. As she slips into the driver’s seat of her Hollywood career to make us laugh or cry or contemplate, we can all benefit from Collins and her unapologetic optimism.

Since the smash-hit comedy series Emily in Paris first hit our Netflix queues in late 2020, all eyes have been on Lily Collins.

From its inception, Collins and the series's influencer heroine, Emily Cooper, have captured our attention with their bubbly demeanor and vibrant parade of outfits that make the show a feast for the eyes, and this December, the Emmy-winning series returns to our screens for its much-anticipated third season.

Although this role is what propelled the actress to new heights of notoriety, Collins is also drawn to roles outside comedy and earlier this year starred in the dark drama Windfall. "I've always wanted to bop in and out of different genres never to be put in a box," she explained.

While acting will always be part of Collins's career, she's experimenting with work behind the camera, too, and has been busy forging a name for herself in producing with credits on Windfall and Emily in Paris.

We caught up with Collins to discuss what Emily Cooper will be up to in the show's third season, her foray into producing, and of course all things Parisian fashion. Below, read some excerpts from our interview, and tune in to the Who What Wear podcast to hear it in full.

What has been your favorite red carpet look of all time or any look that really stands out as being like particularly special to you?

Can I say my wedding dress? It's not exactly a red carpet, but there was a very long Ralph Lauren rug.

That counts. Well, it was certainly stunning. Did you work with Ralph on that dress?

I got to collaborate with them and have fittings while shooting season two and fully designed from every element of that dress.

What was the inspiration?

The inspiration was Ralph's son's wife's dress. So it was very much inspired by a family dress.

While filming Emily in Paris, you're wearing heels nonstop. I read that because of this and the cobblestone streets, it's really done a number on your feet. But you must have some secret up your sleeve to how to make it all bearable.

Oh my gosh, yes. Insoles. I'm not going to lie; insoles now save my feet. We had them made for every different type of shoe, which was amazing because like you said, walking on cobblestones all the time is incredibly difficult. But it was something that I swear by. And I always used to think that when I was younger, they sounded like something old people wore. Well, I'm now I'm part of the insole crew because it's game-changing.

Any particular brand you swear by?

Oh, they're from a doctor in France, who makes them for us. There are sweet couple in France, a husband-and-wife duo, and they're amazing, and they make them custom.

Speaking of style, when you are left to your own devices—no glam team, no stylists to attend to you—what are you reaching for?

Comfortable jeans. I always made fun of high-waisted jeans when I was a kid, and now the "mom" jean is my go-to. A cozy sweater. A great flat or a Birkenstock. A blazer. And a bag that fits all my necessities, like a big bag or one of those like micro bags. It's super cute even if it fits a couple things because I tend to overpack, so maybe limiting is better. But I'm a comfortable girl. I love my sneakers now. I want to be able to run around town and not be worried. Running around in heels? I do that enough on the show.

You've traveled back and forth between Paris and Los Angeles while filming Emily in Paris. Is there any skincare product that no matter where you're traveling, you always have on hand?

The Génifique masks by Lancôme save me. They're extra hydrating. I wear a mask whenever I can if I've traveled and I'm super dry or, … you know, I need brighter skin or just a pick-me-up. I literally have them in my bag all the time. Face masks are the way to go.

Speaking of beauty, you are obviously this eyebrow icon. You're known for these bold, fluffy brows, and while I'm sure a lot of it is genetic, what's your secret to maintaining them?

Every night, I'll do a little taming with a tweezer. That's about it. And then a clear brow gel. But a basic, I mean, any clear brow gel that you can have or mascara that's clear to keep them in place. But honestly, it's about the constant maintenance every so often—little here or there because when I was younger, I went too far too quickly. And sometimes you can't come back from that. 

I saw you just got back from a trip to San Miguel de Allende. Where is next on your travel bucket list?

Japan. I've been before, but it's finally reopened. I love that country so much. And very much want to go back.

There are only a few things I know to be undeniably true. First, the best hair days tend to happen when you have no plans and you're not going to be leaving the house (naturally). Second, a breakout is sure to appear on the eve of a big event, like a birthday, job interview, graduation, or wedding (it's just the way it is). Third, French-girl beauty will never go out of style (this is an absolute). 

The latter has been proven time and time again. Whether it's the popularity of French beauty brands or trending French skincare secrets, everyone knows there's a classic and timeless aspect to it. And that's certainly true when it comes to French hairstyles, like Birkin bangs. 

Popularized by French icon Jane Birkin in the '60s, these bangs are short, slightly feathered, and universally flattering. Celebrities are proof of that. According to Tatum Neill, Creative Director of Aveda Arts & Sciences Institute, "Birkin Bangs are a soft version of a full framed fringe that dates back to '60s fashion icon Jane Birkin. They have a square shape to them much like the Hermès Birkin Bag but they do not read as geometric and blunt." 

He recommends bringing photos to the salon so you get the exact result you desire. "The best way to ensure you get the right look is to come with photos and an idea of where you want them to sit. They can be placed below, at, or above the eyebrow and should extend beyond the eyes and open up your face. Be sure to discuss your hair texture and growth patterns to ensure that they sit right and don't pop up too much when you style at home. The bangs should be cut with a little disheveled precession so they maintain a square shape but feel soft and piecey."

Getting the right cut is half the battle. Styling them is the other half. Luckily, Neill has some advice for that, too. Start with clean, damp hair and blow dry your bangs with a small paddle brush or a fine-tooth comb. "You want to follow your brush or comb with your blow-dryer with a back-and-forth movement so the hair doesn't part in any particular direction," he explains. "Once dry you can use a lightweight hair spray like Aveda's Air Control ($29) to piece some of the ends together to give it that effortless French look." Easy, right?

Let me start by saying that I have no fear when it comes to my hair. Like a true Aries, I’ve sheared it to my chin in a fit of inspiration, impulsively cut (and adored) swooping ‘90s bangs, and recently let it grow longer than ever. That said, my lengthy tresses are finally starting to weigh me down, and one of 2026’s hottest (and sharpest!) haircut trends is slowly starting to sing its siren song.

“Classic for a reason, the blunt bob is going to continue its reign as a go-to hairstyle in 2026,” celebrity hairstylist Dimitris Giannetos previously told Who What Wear. This timeless shear is one of the easiest ways to make everything below the neck look chic, though celebs with signature sharp bobs like Kelly Rowland and Lily Collins have made cases for the shoulder-pad-and-high-neck combo. Giannetos describes this sleek, straight crop as “blunt, smooth, and high fashion—perfect for someone wanting a chic chop.”

What is a Blunt Bob?

Since the 1920s, bobs have always been the moment. However, it’s not until the 21st century that we see stylized haircuts overshadow styling, like flapper-esque finger waves and ‘50s roller curls. With the ever-changing trendscape fueled by social media and celebrities, modern iterations like the “c*nty little bob” popularized by The White Lotus’s Leslie Bibb—cropped sharply below the ear—and Zendaya’s old Hollywood “bixie” (read: bob-slash-pixie) kick things up a notch.

Hairstylist stylist and Oribe global artist Mandee Tauber previously described the blunt bob as a “one-length, clean-lined cut” meant to accentuate shine and make a bold statement. “Falling at chin or shoulder length, it’s the blueprint for the trendy Italian bob,” she added. While most blunt bobs are typically cut on a severe line and styled straight to showcase the meticulous craftsmanship (and deliver a “don’t mess with me” energy), Tauber explains that you can easily still achieve a variation of this look with diffused, softer ends for a more casual look.

Depending on your face shape, a sharper bob at certain lengths could serve you better than a softer version and length. Tauber explained that blunter and shorter bobs flatter “oval and heart-shaped faces especially well,” whereas a longer “lob” version will better suit square or rounded faces “by elongating the silhouette.” I could spew for another 50 lines about the different types of blunt bobs, but I’d rather show you. The celebrity stylist goes on to recommend incorporating hydrating hair masks and smoothing serums into your styling regimen to maintain salon-level gloss.

After heat styling, whether with a round brush and hair dryer or flat iron, you’ll want to run a few small drops of a restorative hair oil or styling serum to give your hair an instant boost of shine—accentuating that sleek, blunt chop of yours. Below are a few of my tried-and-true favorites.

The first thing I notice about Lily Collins is that she’s cut her chestnut locks into a thick fringe. While it covers enough of her forehead to obscure her famously fluffy brows, the fresh look somehow feels remarkably fitting. It’s so fitting, in fact, that the moment when Emily in Paris costume designer Marylin Fitoussi laid eyes on it, she declared, "Oh, now I know where we’re going in season three for your character.” Emily Cooper wouldn’t exist without Lily Collins, but it’s Emily who gives us a glimpse into Collins’s most charismatic real-life qualities too. As showrunner Darren Star aptly put it, the success of a series like Emily in Paris stands on the shoulders of a single person. Enter Collins.

"Work is so much a part of who I am,” effuses a bubbly Collins. Of all the qualities they share, there’s one major resemblance that the actress bears to her starring character in Netflix’s smash-hit comedy series, and it’s the fact that they’re both exceptionally self-assured. "And I’m very much like my character [Emily]. I love what I do,” she continues. "I’m unapologetically work driven. But I’m also unapologetically life driven.” Just like it’s hard not to fall in love with the bright, bold, and eternally optimistic Emily—despite the bumps in her fish-out-of-water experience as an American living in France—it’s hard not to fall under the intoxicating spell of Collins. When we connected over Zoom last month, her image appeared across my screen, and she was fresh-faced and clad in a simple crew-neck sweater. She was perched in the middle of a bed in the guest room of her Los Angeles home, a carefully chosen spot where there would be minimal noise since our conversation was also being recorded for the Who What Wear podcast. It’s that kind of thoughtfulness that makes Collins, well, Collins. Indeed, as soon as I brought up our cover shoot, she eagerly recounted the details of the day, insisting that she relished the chance to experiment with the grungier hair, makeup, and styling, which are—let’s be honest—a sharp departure from Collins’s more polished preferences. It’s at this moment that I get the sense that, when she shows up for something, she really shows up. Nothing is half-baked in the world of Lily Collins.

Over the course of our hour-and-a-half-long conversation, I come to learn that there’s no topic too light or too deep for Collins, and the range of what we covered is a testament to that. No matter what we discussed—be it the polarized reception of Emily in Paris, her mix-breed rescue Redford, or the importance of going to therapy—Collins brought a certain levity to all subject matter. They say that how you do anything is how you do everything, and I’m beginning to get the idea that Collins does everything with curiosity and openness. 

Despite being born in the English countryside to performer Phil Collins and Jill Tavelman, Collins spent most of her formative years in Los Angeles, where she went on to earn a degree in journalism from USC. As a teenager, Collins wrote a column, NY Confidential, for the British magazine Elle Girl. She has also written for Seventeen, Teen Vogue, and the Los Angeles Times. Although writing was one of her first creative outlets, Collins has never been a stranger to the camera—her first on-screen credit coming at the age of 2 for the BBC series Growing Pains.
