The leggings market is one of the most oversaturated in the industry. Between inseams, lengths, fabrics and finishes, it's a struggle to know where to begin when shopping for pants, let alone know what to look out for when buying a good quality pair. "The main differences lie in fabric feel, support level, and intended activity," explains Another Version founder Shelley Cook. "[The brand] designs leggings for real life—whether that’s a workout, a long walk, or a full day of errands," she continues.

The primary difference ultimately comes down to the level of exercise you're doing when wearing leggings. For pulse-racing HIIT classes, you'll want to look for something more sculpting, while low-impact workouts can benefit from a softer finish.

How Can you Find What Legging Length Suits you Best?

Finding the right legging length comes down to your "height, proportions and how you want them to fit and feel," explains Hars. Typically, legging lengths are one of the following: full length, 7/8, crop and capri. As the name suggests, full-length hits right at the ankle, while 7/8 falls between your joint and the bottom of your calf. Crop finishes right around your muscle, and capri is a true three-quarter length.

"Full-length leggings (28" and above) suit longer legs, while 7/8 length (typically 24"–26") flatter most people and hit just above the ankle," explains Cook. "If you’re unsure, start with 7/8—they’re the most universally flattering in our opinion.

What Specific Activities Suit Different Types of Leggings Best?

Whether you're running to the gym or heading to brunch after a boxing class, specific workouts benefit from wearing specific leggings. Just like you wouldn't wear jeans to a spin class, there are specific materials that complement best and can actually enhance performance.

"The right leggings depend on your activity and desired look and feel," Hars tells me.

"For Pilates, yoga, and gym workouts, a snug, supportive fit with light compression and four-way stretch fabric offers flexibility and stability," she adds. "For running or higher-impact workouts, more compressive fabrics can help reduce bounce and fatigue. For slower movement, recovery, or lounging, cotton blends prioritise breathability and comfort over compression."

If you're not testing the stretch and sheerness of leggings in person, there are a few tell-tale signs that you can look out for when shopping for the best styles online. "When it comes to performance leggings, the fabric composition might look similar on paper, but quality can vary significantly depending on construction, weight, texture, and finish," Hars notes. "Even among polyester-spandex blends, key differences in weaving, thread types, and treatments greatly affect how the fabric feels, performs, and looks," she continues.

So, where to start? "Consider how you want the leggings to feel," she explains. "Some fabrics offer a brushed finish with a cosy hand feel, while others have a sleeker, more technical look—perfect for a sculpted, elevated appearance."

Compression is another key factor. "Do you prefer a held-in, sculpting effect or a softer, more flexible fit?" Hars asks. "High-quality leggings offer excellent stretch and recovery, move naturally with your body, and maintain their shape after wear. Look for flat seams and always ensure the fabric is squat-proof."

"Ultimately, it’s about finding a pair that fits how you want to move, feel, and look," she reminds me. This is something Cook agrees with: "When leggings feel comfortable and luxurious but hold you in, that’s a sign of quality. We stand by feeling like the best, most confident version of yourself when you put on a pair of our leggings."

How Can you Tell If a Pair of Leggings are Good Quality?

There are also small indicators that give away whether a pair of leggings are good or bad. According to Cook, these pointers include: "A waistband that stays up, fabric that doesn't go sheer when stretched, and seams that don’t dig in or chafe. If it feels good from the moment you put it on, you're on the right track." Hars mentions a few other factors.

"High-quality leggings feel smooth and balanced in weight, not flimsy or overly shiny," she adds. "When stretched, the fabric should hold its shape without becoming see-through or loose. Examine the stitching and waistband. The seams should be clean, flat, and reinforced, and the waistband should hold without digging in or rolling down. Good leggings recover well after wear, returning to their original shape. Most importantly, try them on to experience comfort and support."

What are the Best Materials for Leggings?

You may notice that a lot of leggings brands use a lot of synthetic materials, but fear not. It's often the case that hybrid material blends make for the best leggings fabrics for a few reasons. "A blend of nylon and elastane is a top choice because it offers durability, stretch, and a smooth finish," Cook advises. "Nylon is breathable and resists wear, while elastane adds that perfect stretch-and-recovery."

If you're planning on working up a stretch, activewear leggings can also benefit from being made of "high-quality recycled polyester blended with spandex". According to Hars, this combination offers "durability, sweat-wicking properties, shape retention, and the right level of sculpting and stretch". "It’s technical enough to support movement while feeling smooth against the skin, perfect for that elevated, performance-meets-comfort feel," she adds. "For low-impact or lounging activities, organic cotton blends with a touch of elastane offer softness and breathability, though less sculpting."

What is the Best Way to Wash Your Leggings?

To preserve and extend the life of your leggings, Hars suggests "turning them inside out before washing to protect the fabric and maintain colour and stretch." You should also avoid using water that is scorching hot. Rather, she explains to "use a cold, gentle cycle and avoid fabric softeners, which can break down performance fibres over time." Once all washed, Cook tells me that letting them to air dry will help leggings keep their shape better. "Skip the dryer and lay flat or hang to dry. This protects elasticity, colour, and shape, keeping them looking newer for longer."

Yoga pants are an alternative to leggings that many celebrities like Kendall Jenner and Hailey Bieber have begun gravitating toward to. But what actually are they, and how are yoga pants different to leggings? "Leggings are typically tighter throughout and come in various fabrics and fits for both lifestyle and athletic wear. One of the biggest questions I get asked as a fashion editor is whether it's truly fine to wear leggings every day. When I sounded this question off around the Who What Wear team, the responses were varied. To some, this look feels a little too relaxed, while others think it's perfectly fine, as long as some consideration and care is put into elevating a staple part of the activewear uniform. The subject that is so polarising that it's often espoused that French women conspicuously change into leggings once they get to their workout class to avoid being seen in public wearing them. Don't call it a comeback. Leggings haven't gone anywhere. After my initial article about the resurgence of leggings, I sparked quite a debate on TikTok about whether or not leggings went anywhere in the first place. The truth is they didn't.

From a visit to New York Pilates to coffee with a friend, as someone who works out daily I've still been wearings leggings pretty much every single day. But in 2023, our leggings are going to be taking us past the gym and errands circuit. They want a night out on the town with us. And who would complain about the comfort of dancing the night away in a pair of leggings? I surely will be taking advantage shortly.

As I'm looking for a way to style my leggings that is anything but boring, fashion designers are leading the way in the styling department. A quick survey of the most recent runway shows reveals that designers are backing it. Even at the upper echelons of names like Celine and Christian Dior, you'll find a pair of leggings. If you want to wear leggings but also want to simply look expensive, try re-creating one of the below seven outfits that probably won't require you to make another purchase.

I might as well close my laptop and leave you with this look because it's that good. It pretty much sums up what we're looking for in our leggings outfits. This is the kind of look you'd see the most stylish Beverly Hills woman arrive at dinner wearing and I've decided I'll be re-creating it this weekend.

Another instant winner for me in the leggings department is this look from Alaïa. I never thought I'd see the day when cotton poplin and leggings would coexist so beautifully, but it's arrived. There's something so beautiful about this juxtaposition.

This look is giving military chic in all the right ways. You wouldn't think at first glance that this outfit is a spotlight on leggings because of how elevated it is. I can see a celebrity pulling up to dinner in this exact outfit and I'm here for it.

Prada heavily signed off on leggings in its spring/summer 2023 collection, and having them on board is the icing on the cake for me. I'm loving how this matching separates look comes together with a pop of color and an overcoat.

Nothing style-related has undergone a reinvention quite like leggings. Just a few short years ago, many would have shuddered at the thought of leaving the house in leggings, that is unless the destination was either the gym or the school gates at 8.28am. Okay, so I'm being overly exaggeratory, but it's true for me at least; I just wouldn't have had the confidence to do so. And that's quite sad. 

However, in recent years, leggings have become a lot more commonplace outside of athleisure and have morphed into something quite chic indeed. The more I've seen people styling theirs with blazers and jumpers, and finishing with sleek boots or loafers or trending trainers, the more I've come around to wearing them as I do my jeans. Be it for brunch dates, coffee runs, trips to the shops, or even low-key dinners out, leggings are no longer off limits (albeit my own self-imposed limits) for me. 

This new-found liberation means I've become something of a legging fanatic. My collection is small, but I'm always on the look-out for elevated options to add to it. Comfort is still a key priority, but why can't I have it all and look chic in the process? It might sound like too much to ask but, in actual fact, I've found five fresh leggings trends for 2023 that fulfil my requirements. In fact, I've already purchased a pair—here's looking at you, COS—which I've hardly taken off since they arrived.

Style Notes: As wide-leg silhouettes have become increasing popular where trousers and jeans are concerned, it should come as no surprise that leggings are also being given the wide-leg treatment. Kendall Jenner has already pledged her allegiance to them; will you?

When what was once exclusively worn for working out was introduced as something we now fondly call "athleisure," people had opinions about it. Nude leggings can never not be chic. They not only are flattering but also look good with anything in your closet. I've been drooling over the way they were styled on the Khaite and Prada runways ever since the fall. Nothing says fashion with a capital F more than these outfits.

Spring in New York is quite possibly the hardest season to dress for. Winter is simple—down jackets, fuzzy socks, laced-up snow boots, a cashmere-blend scarf. Summer is flouncy dresses and sandals, and fall is sweaterdresses and knee boots. But suddenly, it’s spring, and it’s confusing. It’s too warm for puffers, too cold for tank tops, too warm for skirts with tights, but too cold for shorts, which all accumulates into a frenzied clothing transition. 

After 23 years of this, I’ve finally cracked the code to spring attire: leggings, jeans, and T-shirts. On the top, go for a brand-new T-shirt in simple springtime hues or a cropped cut, which a light jacket can easily be slung over. Then for the bottom, the right pair of leggings, either athletic or leather, keeps you temperate and goes with nearly any outfit. Or perhaps try jeans because you can’t wear leggings every single day (allegedly), so a cropped pair or a light wash is the perfect transition into warmer weather. And it seems as though retailers are on board with my choices; the T-shirts, leggings, and jeans this season are some of the best that I’ve seen yet. Next up: I Can't Believe I'm Saying This, But I Think Wedges Might Be Cool Again

Even though I live in Los Angeles, a city where people very much love to boast about the year-round warm and sunny weather, winter is in fact my favorite season. I'll probably get in trouble with local tourism groups and my friends for admitting that, but it's true: There's nothing like a cool California day. I love layering up for crisp morning walks and cozy evenings indoors, and this year, I've already found so many cute pieces to do so in.

I've been prioritizing affordable fashion now more than ever, so I'm lucky to have discovered all of the stylish and insanely well-priced items available at Walmart. From my favorite new plaid shacket that all of my friends have already asked to borrow to the faux-fur-lined hiker boots that are keeping me both warm and on-trend, my winter wardrobe is looking pretty chic these days. I'm serious—you won't believe my two new outfits are all made up of pieces that are $70 (or much less!) each. Have I convinced you yet?

This outfit was styled with all of my favorite winter staples in mind: faux-leather leggings (currently wearing multiples times a week); an on-trend shacket (shirt-jacket, if you're new around here); an oversize turtleneck knit (softness level: 100); and my favorite mock-croc accessories (a material that only looks expensive). I truly can't believe this entire outfit costs exactly $171 head to toe, but the numbers don't lie.

Here's a close up of those gorgeous, and admittedly very expensive-looking, accessories. The top-handle bag and heeled boots make any outfit feel instantly more polished, even if it's just jeans and a long-sleeve T-shirt.

Speaking of jeans, I've been wearing denim quite frequently considering I now work from my couch. A few months ago, I finally quit the habit of wearing loungewear all day because it's helped me be more productive and feel better about myself overall, so now I turn to easy outfits like this one. However, it's a requirement that the jeans are stretchy and elevated like this button-front straight-leg pair. I also love that these jeans are made from organic cotton, which means they're better for the environment not to mention super soft. For further comfort, a fleece jacket is always a good idea.

If you thought I was kidding about how into mock-croc accessories I am, then I hope this outfit proves you wrong. I wear this $28 crossbody style I snagged from Walmart when I have more than just my phone and wallet to carry, and I always get so many compliments on it. I recommend picking one up for yourself (and a friend if you're feeling generous) ASAP before it sells out.

If there's one thing you should know about me, it's that I love to dance. Now, this doesn't necessarily mean I'm actually any good at it, but somehow my inhibitions melt away and are swiftly replaced with what I can only describe as instinct as I sashay, spin and side-step my way into the early hours. There's no doubt that leather pants may not be new on the fashion scene, but they reached an all-time high of wear this past year. I'm not surprised, because they make any outfit look expensive and are the perfect alternative to jeans when the temperature drops. But while pairing shoes with jeans is relatively easy, it can be tricky to figure out what to put on when wearing the edgy trend, and that's where I come into play. I've been wearing leather pants all season, so I did the work and tested the waters to see which shoes pair the best. 

Below, I've listed 3 shoes that style best with leather pants, along with outfit inspiration straight from our favorite street-style stars, and one that doesn't. However, feel free to disagree with me and wear whatever you want, this is purely based on my experience. 

Do: Ankle Boot

Ankle boots are the fool-proof shoe to wear with leather pants, whether you opt for a classic black bootie or a printed one.

Do: Loafers

Loafers have become my favorite shoe to trend this year, especially with the embellished ones that were seen on the runways. They add a more upscale look to leather pants, which I am 100% for. 

Do: Sneakers

Sneakers go with almost everything, and paired with leather pants you're pretty much set for a cool-girl outfit. 

Don't: Knee High Boots

While layering knee-high boots over denim pairs well, over leather pants can make for an uncomfortable situation. Since leather is already structured and heavier fabric, pulling knee-high boots over them probably won't make the best mix. Plus, if you do a leather ankle boot and pant combo, you'll essentially get the same vibe.
