On the first Monday in May, the upper echelons of the fashion industry gather on the Upper East Side for the most opulent display of style, taste and creative excellence; more commonly known as the Met Gala.

For the uninitiated, the annual charity ball has been hosted for three-quarters of a century and raises funds for the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute. With an exclusive guest list that gathers aristocrats, designers, actors, musicians, athletes, business tycoons and titans in their respective industries, the show-stopping night has come to be known as the crème de la crème of the sartorial calendar.

The actual proceedings of the event are an enigma thanks to a strict no-phones policy—save for star-studded selfies captured in the ladies’ room—making it also one of the most secretive events across the East Coast.

But of course, the real standout of the evening is the array of looks that grace the red carpet. Serving as a proverbial runway, the granite front steps are elevated beyond disbelief, serving both a literal and figurative platform for the haute couture creations that exceed all expectations.

From Gigi Hadid’s bespoke Thom Browne gown that made history for taking over 13,500 hours to construct to Dua Lipa wearing a completely beguiling 100-carat Tiffany & Co. necklace that was reportedly worth over $100 million USD, these ensembles aren’t for the faint of heart.

Style Notes: With the theme as expansive and loaded with historical connotations as “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination,” it was only fitting that Rihanna take not only the most subversive route, but also the most straightforward.

Quite literally taking the fashion set to church, the multi-hyphenate musician and makeup mogul opted for a custom silver Maison Margiela cape-and-dress concoction designed by John Galliano. The pièce de résistance, however, was her homage to papal regalia in the form of her Stephen Jones headpiece. Hers is one conclave we’d gladly join.

2. Princess Diana

Style Notes: Six months after Princess Diana enshrined her fashion legacy by turning up to the Serpentine Gallery Summer Party wearing the inimitable revenge dress designed by Christina Stambolian, the late Lady Spencer made a discreet public outing to deliver another iconic ensemble for the ages.

Blending in with the Manhattan evening, she arrived at the soiree in an understated midnight blue slip dress designed by John Galliano for Christian Dior. (Just one of the British enfant terrible’s many features on this list.) Her one and only appearance at the event eventually came to define her sartorial shift following her separation from King Charles III; elegant, unburdened and an expression of her true sense of self.

3. Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen

Style Notes: without an appearance from the perennially mysterious Olsen Twins. Mary Kate and Ashley have been fixtures at the soirée since they were 18 years old, making the event a true home-away-from-home for the secretive duo. However, it was at the 2017 iteration, which was themed “Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons”, where The Row designers made their biggest impact.

Returning to their bohemian roots, the duo arrived in truly antique lace slip dresses that were reportedly over a century old. Dripping in pendant necklaces, fur-trimmed jackets and chunky accessories, the looks also honoured the Japanese designer’s autumn/winter 2005 collection “Broken Brides”, which was a subtle full-circle moment, given it also acknowledged the year they first started attending.

4. Zendaya

Style Notes: You can rest assured that whenever Zendaya has confirmed her RSVP, a sartorial feast is guaranteed. As one of the pioneers of method dressing, the 29-year-old takes her job as a guest incredibly seriously. However, when it came to her co-chairing the event in 2024, she exceeded all expectations.

Not only did she both open and close the red carpet with two separate but incredibly visionary looks, she delivered the most hauntingly beautiful interpretation of the theme “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion”. With the dress code being "The Garden of Time," which was inspired by J.G. Ballard's 1962 short story exploring themes of beauty, decay, and the fleeting nature of time, she wore a custom gown by John Galliano for Maison Margiela that embodied the ephemeral and elegant source material. Quite euphoric.

5. Kate Moss

Style Notes: Another iconic co-chair came in the form of Kate Moss. Attending the 2009 iteration, which adhered to the theme “The Model as Muse”, she proved the power that supermodels wield as the ultimate shapeshifter. A true incarnation of Marc Jacobs' vision for the evening, she ditched her Camden-core leather jackets, skinny jeans and knee-high boots for a gold lame mini dress and matching Elizabeth Taylor-inspired turban.

6. Zoë Kravtiz

Style Notes: One of the symbols for Anthony Vaccarello’s sensually sophisticated visions for Saint Laurent, Zoë Kravitz was truly firing on all cylinders when she arrived at the 2021 Met Gala. Dressing to the theme “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion”, the actor-turned-director’s phenomenally risqué wore what could only be described as a netted dress made from dazzling crystals that made the shape of itty-bitty YSL monograms. Because who needs a slip dress when you’re dripping in diamantes?

7. Lady Gaga

Style Notes: Why have one look when you can have four? That was the thesis question that Lady Gaga designed her 2019 Met Gala ensemble around, landing on a captivating Brandon Maxwell look that was part performance art, part moving installation and completely camp.

Beginning with a magenta overcoat that featured an elongated train and accompanied by five dancers, she later slipped into a gown before changing into a Madonna-esque column dress, before closing out her epic entrance in a sequin-encrusted black bralette, panties, fishnet tights and platform booties.

8. Lily-Rose Depp

Style Notes: As someone who was appointed as one of Karl Lagerfeld’s “choupettes” as a teenager, it should come as no surprise that Lily-Rose Depp has almost unlimited access to Chanel’s archives for her public appearances.

At the 2019 Met Gala, The Idol star embraced the French maison’s most vampy silhouettes in a little black dress adorned with gold chains and gilded camellias. The piece was also first worn by Christy Turlington on the luxuriate’s spring/summer 1992 runway and later featured on Penelope Cruz in Pedro Almodóvar’s 2009 romantic thriller Broken Embraces.

9. Naomi Campbell

Style Notes: From walking the runway alongside her fellow “supers” to George Michael’s “Freedom” for Versace’s autumn/winter 1991 show to wearing the Italian designer’s iconic chainmail butterfly dress to an event alongside Kate Moss in 1999, Naomi Campbell has had no shortage of iconic Versace moments in her lifetime. Of course, the most sentimental moment came when she attended the 1995 Met Gala—the first hosted by Anna Wintour—alongside the brand’s founder, Gianni.

10. Tyla

Style Notes: It’s quite a feat to make the Met Gala best dressed list on your first time attending. But that’s exactly what South African pop sensation Tyla did for the 2024 event. In the spirit of surrealism and trompe l'oeil, the singer arrived in a Balmain dress that evoked the sands of time.

The gown was a custom fit to her figure and ended up being so tight that she needed to be carried up the steps by a security guard. Made from a plaster moulding that combined mica and mirror powder, the look was a true standout and firmly established her place in fashion’s elite circles.

11. Kendall Jenner

Style Notes: Though she might be known for her signature stealth wealth way of dressing, Kendall Jenner delivered her most high-octane look when attending the 2019 Met Gala in custom Versace. Wearing Marty Supreme orange and a feathered gown that left a trail of plumage, the look has become incredibly iconic over the years for the way the showgirl-esque silhouette completely transformed the model turned tequila maven. Later that year, for her Halloween-themed birthday party, the waiters were dressed up in this exact costume, proving just how camp the look actually was.

12. Kim Kardashian

Style Notes: Of course, it wouldn’t be a guide to the most iconic Met Gala dresses if it didn’t include this Kim Kardashian look on the list. Love it or hate it, this infamous Riccardo Tisci for Givenchy design helped segue the reality star and aspiring lawyer into a new stratosphere of fame.

Whilst many were vicious in their lamenting over her attendance at the event in the first place, the majority were brutal in tearing down the dress itself. Earning comparisons to Robin Williams in Mrs Doubtfire and even the couches owned by grandmothers, it's safe to say that Skims founder herself had the last laugh, given how iconic this look has become in its own right.

Style Notes: Bearing resemblance to both an Oscar statuette and Star Wars character C3PO, Anne Hathaway’s Ralph Lauren dress from the 2015 Met Gala just proves how ahead of the fashion curve she is. This is a fact we might all recognise now, but it wasn’t the case over a decade ago. But as her fictional grandmother in The Princess Diaries, played by the incredibly Dame Julie Andrews, said, a queen is never late, everyone else is simply early.

What Is The Theme of the 2026 Met Gala?

As announced by VOGUE, the theme of the 2026 Met Gala is "Costume Art". As always, the theme is derived from the Costume Institute's spring exhibition. According to the centre's head curator, Andrew Bolton, the theme addresses “the centrality of the dressed body in the museum’s vast collection".

The museum reports that the exhibition will "pair garments with artworks to reveal the inherent relationship between clothing and the body". It continues, "from the formal to the conceptual, the aesthetic to the political, the individual to the universal, the illustrative to the symbolic, and the playful to the profound, these pairings are organised into a series of thematic body types that reflect their pervasiveness and endurance through time and cultures."

The exhibition is sponsored by tech billionaire Jeff Bezos and his wife, Lauren Sanchez Bezos, Saint Laurent and Condé Nast.

What is the Dress Code for the 2026 Met Gala?

Accompanying the theme, guests are invited to adhere to a compulsory dress code that further elucidates the crux of the exhibition. Keeping things incredibly simple for the 2026 event, the dress code is "Fashion is Art". This can be translated however the guest sees fit and can run the gamut from gowns that literally transpose famous works onto fabric to dresses that embrace the Métiers d'Art (or arts and crafts) that underscores any ensemble.

Last night, Bad Bunny made Super Bowl history—according to early numbers reported by CBS News—with the most-viewed halftime performance in the franchise's history, clocking in at a gargantuan 135 million viewers. Amid the flurry of on-screen dancers, sugarcane plants, and celebrities who peppered the Puerto Rican megastar's theatrical production, I was shocked to spot Lady Gaga performing a joyful rendition of her hit song "Die With a Smile," wearing a ruby-red lip that I'm now itching to re-create this Valentine's Day.

Adorned in a powder-blue Luar dress by Brooklyn-based Dominican designer Raul Lopez and a flor de maga brooch (the national flower of Puerto Rico), Gaga's look was dripping in symbolism, reverence, and undeniable elegance. Gen Z Says is a bimonthly column chronicling the latest trends in the fashion and beauty space through the lens of Who What Wear's own Gen Z editors. Expect a download on the upcoming class of tastemakers, emerging designers, and shopping and style choices straight from the generation setting the trends.

Bearing witness to the meteoric uprise of a trend was once a rare occurrence much like catching a solar eclipse at its highest point. Now, however, society’s youngest generations can’t seem to escape them thanks to the expansive digital landscape and its products, brands, and the heavy-hitting celeb names that back them. And here’s the kicker—even if celeb names aren’t front and center, there’s a good chance their very being (or at least what’s captured with the flash of a camera), is. For this edition of Gen Z Says, I’m taking a look at some of the most recognizable beauty brands founded by this generation’s biggest celebrities.

My earliest introduction to celebrity-owned beauty brands happened in the hallowed halls of my neighborhood drugstore while pursuing shelves peppered with fragrances in vibrant, multicolored packaging. When I learned that not only were many of them plastered with the faces of my favorite artists, models, and socialites, but that they were also heavily endorsed by other celebrities, I was hooked. The Harajuku Lovers perfumes by Gwen Stefani that I wore on rotation during my tween years were also worn on the red carpet by countless Y2K A-listers. Over the years, I’ve watched as celebrity-owned beauty brands have shifted and transformed; lending to new generations of creatives with fast-growing brands. The most noticeable change, however, happened with the industry-wide takeover by celebrity makeup and skincare brands.

Of all the celebrity brands that have risen to prominence over the past couple of years, Rhode Skin remains top of mind. The consumer response to the brand’s most recent product launches has been overwhelmingly positive, with Gen Z content creators and users praising everything from Rhode’s unique ability to lean into trends with Founder and Creative Director Hailey Rhode Bieber, at its helm. In fact, when I think about the brand’s most recognizable imagery, it’s Bieber with her plush, glossy lips and radiant complexion that I associate the most with Rhode. 

"We started Rhode to create efficacious skincare that works for everyone, and our customer base reflects that,” says Rhode’s Head of Brand Lauren Ratner. "Since we launched the brand in 2022, we have seen consistent demand for new products and to date, we have amazed over 1 million waitlist sign-ups across all products.” That’s right—Bieber’s brand has risen to unparalleled heights in the year since its inception, sparking (and ultimately keeping) the attention of Gen Z consumers worldwide. According to Ratner, the brand’s appeal to this generation can be traced back to Rhode’s goal of maintaining that accessibility and inclusion seen in all products.

Product development is led by Bieber who works closely with the brand’s skincare advisory board of chemists and dermatologists (their best-selling Peptide Glazing Milk was reformulated around 17 times before the desired result was reached). Formulated with sensitive skin in mind, its products use high-performance ingredients, "at efficacious levels,” to nourish the skin barrier while providing the radiant, glazed finish that, in two short years, has become synonymous with the brand. "At Rhode, we take a curated and edited approach to skincare, focusing on a simple yet effective routine of essential products that deliver real results,” Ratner tells us.

The It girl–centered marketing by Rhode Skin and other celebrity beauty brands has Gen Z primed for nothing short of an obsession. Many of the aesthetic trends circulated over major social media platforms have garnered trendy names like "latte makeup" or "clean girl makeup." These trends play on anything from cuisine to personality traits embodied by a nondescript individual. The idea of the It girl, however, is instantly recognizable, especially in celeb brands like Haus Labs (Lady Gaga), Rare Beauty (Selena Gomez), R.E.M. Beauty (Ariana Grande), and Fenty Beauty (Rihanna). Simply put, the names and faces of their famous founders help the brands stand out.

So, what’s in a name that can inspire so much dedication to a beauty brand? A love-lorn teenager in a 16th-century Shakespearean play once asked a similar question to convey that the naming of things, no matter how much weight one may carry, can be irrelevant. I, however, am of the belief that it’s all about the product name and its figurehead. When I hear Rare Beauty or Fenty, my mind immediately jumps to images of a wholesome "Who Says” era Selena Gomez and Rihanna’s iconic pregnancy reveal while performing the halftime show for this year’s Superbowl. Then, I think of the products.

Although Rihanna has since stepped down from her position as the CEO of Savage X Fenty, the billionaire beauty magnate is still hitting all the right notes for the rest of her business ventures. About Face and R.E.M. share a relatable approach to drumming up excitement for the launch of new products, with their prospective founders, Halsey and Ariana Grande, posting directly to their personal social media platforms about their products. I’m left with this lasting impression of the average celebrity beauty brand model: Striking a fine balance of market-driven content that inspires consumers rather than contributing to an oversaturated digital space plays a major role in their success with Gen Z consumers.

Toni Bravo, a beauty and lifestyle content creator who also happens to be a Rare Beauty team member, offered her input on the relevance of these brands to the young generation of beauty lovers. "Celebrity-owned brands, especially founded by very popular celebrities, almost always develop a cult following from the moment of [their] inception,” begins Bravo, "Whether people have gotten their hands on the product or not, some are determined to ride for their faves regardless.” Much of Bravo’s content is dedicated to reviewing and testing trending products, often raising concerns or praising a brand’s inclusion efforts for different skin types and tones.

"In order to give an honest review of a celebrity-owned product, it is important to put aside your admiration for the celebrity and focus on the product’s performance itself,” Bravo continues. "This can be difficult for some people to do, which can make it hard to understand if someone loves the product because it is good, or if they love it simply because it is coming from their ride-or-die celebrity.” She also considers the difference in resources between celeb-owned brands and small, independent ones. This alone can help determine the quality of the product as well as a marketing approach.

"You know a celebrity-owned brand is good when people are talking so much about how good a product is that folks who aren’t as familiar with the brand don’t even know it is celebrity-owned,” she explains. Taking that into consideration, it’s worth questioning the continued relevance of celeb brands in the beauty space. As consumer demands change to push for improved inclusivity and accessibility, ideally, a brand’s response should echo those efforts. If this is the case, then with increased reach comes heightened familiarity (even more so for celebrity beauty brands).

I took a look at some of the jaw-dropping numbers some of our favorite celeb-owned beauty brands have hit over the past year thanks to their massive TikTok presence. Cosmetify’s TikTok Beauty Index, by October 2023, revealed that Rare Beauty hit 3.5 million followers (with 50.3 million video likes and with 7.7 billion hashtag views), making it the second most popular TikTok beauty brand behind Huda Beauty. That being said, it holds the highest following and likes of any celeb-owned beauty brand on the platform. But as we head into 2024, I’m wondering if this generation’s most beloved beauty brands will continue to keep up with the fast-paced trend cycle of the industry.

"One of my mutuals Heather Hurst shared a great analogy about fashion trends that I believe applies to beauty as well. Basically, imagine every beauty trend is on a conveyor belt that circles round and round,” Bravo continues. "You do not have to grab everything off of the conveyor belt all at once.” In other words, if you’re not drawn to a product, its popularity alone shouldn’t be enough to inspire a purchase. In its simplest form, her biggest beauty advice when it comes to the industry’s trend cycle is as follows: enjoy what interests you and don’t feel pressure to invest in the rest because when it comes to trend cycles, everything comes back around… eventually.

The majority of our Deep Reviews will feature our editors' honest, ultra-hot takes on entire product categories or multiple products from a particular beauty brand, but every so often, we'll sprinkle in a special single-product format called Honestly, I Love It. As the name suggests, these reviews will hone in on a standout beauty formula our editors quite literally can't shut up about. This time around, we're doing a group format as I join a few of my fellow beauty colleagues to share honest feedback (plus pretty major before-and-after photos) on a newly launched product from Haus Labs. Enter Haus Labs Color Fuse Blush ($38).

Blush has been enjoying a sort of renaissance. Over the past few years, we’ve watched blush completely explode onto the scene. It’s not an afterthought that you dab sparingly into the apples of your cheeks anymore—blush is the main event. People are sculpting their cheeks with blush, tapping it onto the bridge of their nose for a sunburnt effect, and even "blush draping” by blending it into their eye shadow.

As blush continues to dominate, tons of new, better blush formulas have entered the market. Most of the newer formulas have been in the form of liquids and creams (think the TikTok-famous Rare Beauty Soft Pinch Liquid Blush, $20), but we haven’t seen many powder formulas on the market. I’ve personally been fairly happy with the shift—I find that powder blushes have the tendency to cake out my makeup, nix my glow, and accentuate every pore, crease, and blemish.

Now, the new Haus Labs Color Fuse Blush is here to change everything. It’s a unique gel-powder formula that fixes every woe you’ve ever experienced with powder blush in the past. Rather than sitting on top of makeup, the gel powder is able to melt flawlessly into your skin and give an ultra-natural finish. 

"I love that Color Fuse Blush is smart color,” says Sarah Tanno, Haus Labs global artistry director. "It is packed with hydraberry and fermented arnica, which helps to calm and soothe the skin while you’re wearing it, and it is great for acne-prone skin. All the shades were formulated to work on every skin tone. The shade range is beautiful, buildable, and versatile.”

The blush comes in five colors, each using patented biomimetic pigments that mimic the natural ceramides found in skin, which make the blush feel weightless once you apply it. There’s Açaí Sky, a berry purple; Dragon Fruit Daze, a cool-toned pink; Hibiscus Haze, a mauve-leaning pink; Pomelo Peach, a soft coral; and Watermelon Bliss, a bright red. 

After I got my hands on these blushes, I knew I had to put them to the test. To do that, I had seven members of the wider Who What Wear beauty team join me in testing out each blush color and letting me know what they thought. What did you like about the Haus Labs Color Fuse Blush formula?

"I feel like these blushes have the perfect amount of pigment payoff, and I’m one of the few people left on planet Earth who prefers a powder blush. This formula isn’t so saturated that you immediately go overboard and have to go back and do damage control with foundation or concealer, but they’re saturated enough so you don’t feel like you have to add a million layers. The colors are also just so stunning, and the blush itself feels really silky and velvety on the skin.” — Jahns

"I’m usually partial to cream blushes, but I loved how well Haus Labs’ blush blended. There were a couple of times when I was worried that I applied too much product (especially with Watermelon Bliss and Dragon Fruit Daze), but I was able to blend them out to a gorgeous, natural-looking finish.” — Thomas

Is there anything you didn’t like about the formula?

"I typically stay away from powder formulas because I prefer a dewy finish. Despite it looking gorgeous on my skin tone, I was missing the glow that most other blushes give me. For some of the lighter shades, the product applied almost a little too powdery for me. Some of the lighter shades, like Pomelo Peach, could have appeared a bit ashy on me if not applied heavily enough.” — Morinia

"Honestly, because these blushes are so highly pigmented, you really have to make sure you choose a flattering color. It’s hard to tone them down or apply them in a subtle wash, so it’s imperative that you love the shade you choose.” — McLintock

"I did love that these formulas are pretty light and forgiving, but there can also be a downside to that. For those who do like a heavy wash of color on the cheeks, the lighter shades might be too subtle for you. I also noticed that I had to build the lighter shades up quite a bit to show up on my skin tone—something to keep in mind if you have Black, Brown, or olive skin. I love a subtle sun-kissed look when it comes to wearing blush, so this didn’t exactly bother me, but I think it’s something to note before purchasing.” — Hudson

Did you like how the Haus Labs blushes applied?

"This stuff packs a serious pigment punch. I love it, but be careful with how much you apply at once. A little goes a very long way, so be conservative to start. The formula is buildable, but once it’s on, it’s on.” — Schlisserman

"The shades do not shy away from pigment. Upon first application, I realized I had done a little too much, but because the formula is so silky smooth, I was able to diffuse it, and it blended out super seamlessly.” — Walsh

How would you rate the product out of five, and why?

"I would give this a five out of five! It does exactly what you would expect it to do and more. The pigmentation is absolutely incredible, and after trying all five shades, I can honestly say that they all managed to look good on my skin tone. Because I have darker skin, not all blushes even show up on me, but I am so impressed with the versatility and range. I’m excited to see what other colors launch in the future.” — Morinia

"For me, 4.5 out of five! Only taking a half point off for the fact that it takes a lot of product to build up the color, so the pigment payoff could use a little work. Other than that, these are beautiful blushes, and I’m excited to have them in my arsenal now.” — Hudson

As a beauty editor, I love nothing more than testing out the best makeup, skincare, and haircare products out there, but I also have to be totally honest with you—my job has wreaked havoc on my sensitive skin. I've really put it through its paces this year testing anywhere from two to five new formulas a month, and it has definitely caught up with me. My skin has become more reactive than it has ever been, so I've reined it in recently and now only test the products that get rave reviews.

I'd heard incredible things about Lady Gaga's clean, vegan beauty brand, Haus Labs, and jumped at the chance to try the Triclone Skin Tech Foundation ($49). Of course, since my skin has been reactive, I was excited but also nervous. I felt good about the fact that the brand focuses on skin health and innovation. This formula fits the bill—it's totally noncomedogenic and filled with promising skincare ingredients like fermented arnica, which may help with inflammation in the skin. After giving it a try, color me impressed. Keep reading below for my honest thoughts and full review.

The Formula

The Triclone Skin Tech Foundation is a medium-coverage foundation with a liquid consistency that feels light as air. The formula is also infused with high-performance skincare ingredients like fermented arnica to help reduce redness, even out your skin tone, and protect from environmental stress. A proprietary blend of soothing botanicals also ensures the foundation never aggravates sensitive skin (think: rosacea), inflamed breakouts, and the like. All 51 shades leave you with a smooth, luminous complexion that looks like you're wearing nothing at all—a true "your skin, but better" hero.

About My Skin

I'm going to preface this review by saying that I'm extremely picky when it comes to my foundation. If you've read any of my thoughts on previous foundations we've tested here at WWW, you'll know I don't always go easy. For starters, I have finicky, sensitive, and acne-prone skin, so I have to exercise serious caution when selecting a product I'm going to wear on my face all day.

My Experience and Review

With the Triclone Skin Tech Foundation, it was love at first swipe. First, I was excited that the formula is completely noncomedogenic—something that's key to look for if you have acne-prone skin. Second, I was actually incredibly surprised by the coverage it offered given it's labeled as a medium-coverage foundation. Most medium-coverage foundations offer more of a sheer layer that you have to build up if you want to go full coverage, but that was not the case here. One swipe and my skin looked so flawless—I was shook. I also used way too much at first. A little goes a long way with this formula, which is another huge plus.

After buffing it out with my Monika Blunder Foundation Brush ($38), I was in awe. It blends so seamlessly into the skin and glides all over your face like butter. I've tried a lot of foundations in the past year, but I can tell you I've only truly loved three of them—including this one. My other favorites include the Rare Beauty Liquid Touch Weightless Foundation ($30) and the Hourglass Vanish Seamless Foundation Stick ($49). I loved this formula so much, though, that it's earned the number one spot in my rotation.

Although I love trying new formulas, once I find something that ticks all the boxes, I'm 100% committed. This foundation does that for me and doesn't bother my sensitive skin. Previously, I was breaking out a lot after wearing foundation for eight-plus hours, but after wearing this one for a few days in a row all day, that was not the case. And don't get me started on the rest of the Haus Labs products I tried. To be honest, I'm not sure how I hadn't tried anything from Gaga's incredible line before. The bronzer, pigment paint, highlight, and lip oil were equally impressive. They offer a high pigment payoff and also sit so well atop the foundation. I love that these products are so versatile, too. As you can see above, I had so much fun creating this subtle rosy-pink look, and I would totally wear this during the day to the office or at night out to drinks.

The Verdict

Overall, Haus Labs is absolutely one of my new favorite brands. I've been a fan of Gaga and her music for years, but I can tell that there was a lot of thought, energy, time, and effort put into the brand's latest product offerings. She and her team have truly created an impressive and cohesive line of products, and I honestly cannot wait to see what the brand drops next. I'm going to put in my suggestion now. An eye shadow palette, perhaps?

Truth be told, there's nothing really groundbreaking about wearing a T-shirt, jeans, and sneakers—unless you're Lady Gaga. It's exactly what she wore on a hot day in New York this week (she's in town for a tour stop at MetLife Stadium). If you know anything about her you know that one of the things she's known for (aside from her immense talent) is her highly creative, risk-taking wardrobe. So to see her wear a casual outfit is honestly a bit shocking, but not in a bad way. There are no 7-inch platform shoes or avant-garde dresses in sight, but why would there be when she's walking from a car to a building? Her outfits when she's in the public eye are a form of performance art, so it's understandable that she'd just want to be comfortable when she's off-duty.

Specifically, Gaga wore a very relatable outfit consisting of a white T-shirt (from her own tour merch collection), baggy jeans, and white Nike Air Max 90 sneakers, accompanied by a F/W 22 Celine bag and black baseball cap. Chances are, you wore a very similar outfit recently, so if her goal is to blend in with all the cool girls, it's working.

Next up: Rihanna wore the sneakers every fashion person wants to get their hands on.

Lady Gaga’s makeup brand, Haus Laboratories, first launched in 2019 but has recently been given a major revamp, complete with new products, upgraded formulas, a new name—Haus Labs by Lady Gaga—and a new retail partner in Sephora. It may seem like a lot of changes just in the past few years, but they’re all incredibly meaningful, especially to Gaga. The new products represent a marriage between colorful makeup artistry and clean, "supercharged” formulas. These include unique ingredients such as the patent-pending Fermented Arnica, which may help with inflammation. This particular kind of arnica is 860% more powerful than the regular and is inspired by Gaga’s longtime use of the herb to treat her fibromyalgia. The new line has an overall focus on skin health as well as innovation and pretty pigments.

The assortment contains 90 different SKUs in seven product categories. Some of the products are the same ones as before, just with new, cleaner formulas—such as The Edge Precision Brow Pencil ($22), which is made with micronized pigments and nourishing vitamin E coco-glycerides. Then, there’s the Hy-Power Eye, Cheek & Lip Pigment Paint ($24), high-impact paints that can be used all over the face and come in 11 full-coverage mattes and nine shimmers, as well as the Power Sculpt Velvet Bronzer ($38) and Bio-Radiant Gel-Powder Highlighter ($40), which both contain Fermented Arnica. The PhD Hybrid Lip Oil ($24) contains vegan collagen and prickly pear oil and adjusts to your pH, giving a personalized color, and the new-and-improved Le Monster Lip Crayon ($22) comes in 13 shades and is made with mango-seed oil and ceramides.

As a fan of the original line, I have to say I was nervous about a revamp. I had used Haus Labs’ products almost every single day, specifically the Liquid Eye-Lie-Ner and the Le Monster lipstick, and I was sad to see that there wasn’t a liquid eyeliner in the assortment. But clean formulas are always a good thing, and I trust Lady Gaga to know what she’s doing!

Testing Haus Labs by Lady Gaga

I was excited about the Hy-Power Pigment Paint and instantly knew which shade I wanted to try—Mint Matte. Gaga has been wearing this particular shade a lot lately, and it caught my eye. That bright mint looked like a dream, and I’m happy to report it looks just as good on my lids. It’s highly pigmented and goes on super smooth. I made the mistake of trying to apply it with my fingers, which is probably okay if you’re doing more of a subtle, blended-out look, but I was trying to go for big and bold like Gaga. My fingers got too messy, and it was difficult to get a precise application. So I had to do a second attempt, opting to instead use a firm eye shadow brush and an angled eye brush to apply the paint and draw a cat eye. That worked perfectly. I also wonder if the formula might work better with different packaging, like a built-in brush instead of the paint tube. 

Bronzer is something I haven’t used that often in the past, but I am trying to incorporate it into my makeup routine more regularly. The Power Sculpt Velvet Bronzer felt buttery and soft, making it easy to blend out and build on. Even a bronzer newbie like me could easily add some dimension to their face.��

While I didn’t end up using the Optic Intensity Eco Eyeliner for this look, I did like that it comes with a built-in brush and found that it was pretty resistant to transfer. It has serious staying power. You have to move fast when applying it, so that’s something I’ll have to practice more.

I filled in my brows with the Edge Precision Eyebrow Pencil in Brown Black, and I liked how I was able to draw precise hairs without worrying about the pencil breaking, which is something that happens with other micro-precision brow pencils I’ve used.

Next was the Le Monster Lip Crayon, which, as I mentioned earlier, has been one of my regular go-to lipsticks. Since I was going for a bold eye, I used a more muted shade, Melon Matte. I was happy to see that it had that same smooth application and gorgeously rich pigment that I loved in its original. However, one of the biggest surprises for me was how much I ended up loving the lip oil. I’m a matte-lipstick girl, so anytime there’s a lip product that I find myself reaching for that’s not one of those, it really means something! The PhD Hybrid Lip Oil in Sheer Berry made my lips look juicy and glossy without being greasy or feeling heavy. 

I’m pretty happy with the Haus Labs by Lady Gaga makeover. The only thing I’m missing is the liquid eyeliner (I’m still using my old one), but I’m hoping it comes back. I’m excited to see what’s next since the brand is supposed to launch even more products in three new categories this fall! Anyone who loved the original line should definitely give this one a go, especially those cool pigment paints. If you haven’t tried Gaga’s makeup brand, now is the perfect time to do so.

There seems to be an endless buffet of brow treatments, whether it’s brow lamination, brow tinting, or even a brow freeze. But one seems to be popping up more frequently: ombré brows. And while ombré is a trend that’s made its way through hair, nails, and just about every other genre of beauty, you may need a little more of an explanation when it comes to brows. (TBH, same.)

"Ombré eyebrows—also known as powder brows—is a semi-permanent method of shading the brows,” explains Jennifer Sanchez, owner of Brows by Jenny Rose. "This technique will perfect the brow shape, fill in sparse areas, and, in most cases, replace the need to apply makeup to the eyebrows.” 

So what makes them ombré, you ask? "The tails of the brows are shaded darker and fade into light [toward the] beginning of the brow, giving a soft ombré makeup effect,” explains Sanchez. And like most treatments, the look is totally customizable. "The brows can be tailored to a natural look or bolder makeup look, depending on my client’s preference,” says the pro.

What to Expect During an Ombré Brow Treatment

First things first: a few measurements. "I start with mapping out the eyebrows using a brow ruler and a few other tools to ensure the brows are as symmetrical as possible,” says Sanchez. Still, she reminds us that "brows are supposed to be sisters, not twins!” Once the brow shape is approved, "I tattoo a soft outline to guarantee that the shape is secure, then I numb the brows for about 20 minutes and then proceed with the procedure.” 

Next, "the ombré shading is done using a tattoo shading machine that implants pixelated dots of ink that create an overall powder effect,” explains the pro. And if you’re concerned about the word "tattoo,” don’t worry. "The best part is that most of my clients feel minimal pain,” she says.

The Benefits of Ombré Brows

In addition to the obvious benefit of fuller-looking brows, this treatment pretty much erases the need for brow tools or makeup. "You will literally be able to say, ‘I woke up like this,’” says Sanchez. "You will have waterproof, smudge-proof, defined brows, and you will save time when getting ready and have a major confidence boost.”

Almost anyone can get the treatment, too. "Ombré brows are suitable for all ages, hair and skin types,” says Sanchez, who says it's "ess invasive than microblading. "With microblading, you need normal-dry, blemish-free skin to achieve noticeable results.”

Side Effects of Ombré Brows

Although Sanchez says there are no major side effects, there are a few things to note before making your appointment. "I have my clients complete a health history form to ensure they do not have a medical condition or are on any medications that will slow down the healing process,” says Sanchez. In addition, "Some individuals leave with red or slightly swollen brows, which can last for a few days.” And if your brows look a little intense at first, don’t fret: "The brows will appear dark and bold, but once healed, the color will lighten up and the overall shape will appear more natural. You have to trust the process!” explains Sanchez.

Ombré Brows Aftercare

There are a few things to do at home for the best results. "The most important thing is to keep brows clean, hydrated, out of the sun, and refrain from heavy sweating or moisture for two weeks,” says Sanchez. "If the aftercare is not followed properly, it can cause infections, and the brows will not heal properly.” Sanchez also has her clients come in for a follow-up appointment after eight to 10 weeks "so that I can assess the retention and perfect the areas that may not have taken the pigment.”

Some skincare products may affect the treatment, too. "After the healing process is complete, I advise my clients to avoid applying facial acids, retinoids, and anti-aging products directly to the brows to ensure the brows don’t fade prematurely,” says Sanchez. 

And although the treatment may be pricey (between $500 and $1000, depending on where you go), they can last up to three years. Still, "a color-boost touch-up is recommended every one to two years,” says Sanchez. 

How to Do the Ombré Brow Look at Home 

You may not be able to do actual ombré brows at home, but you can achieve the look using a few products. To start, "use a brow pencil to mark where your brows should start, arch, and end,” says Sanchez. "To create the ombré effect, fill in your eyebrows with a brow pencil or powder using a very light hand. Then, build the color up at the middle and ends of your brows, ensuring that the ends are the darkest.” Next, "use a thin brush and concealer to clean up any mistakes.” Lastly, grab your trusty spoolie to "diffuse the front of the brows.”

Lady Gaga has performed at a range of venues from the Super Bowl to the Grammys, but there's no doubt that Wednesday will be a particularly special one. If you’re a music lover, you can probably name that one album that came into your life and altered the course of your destiny. Lady Gaga’s Born This Way, released in 2011, was that album for me. And while Little Monsters everywhere can agree to disagree on Gaga’s best album, it’s impossible to deny Gaga’s influence over the past decade. From fashion to politics to beauty, this woman has left her claw mark in the zeitgeist. Gaga’s impact isn’t just due to her fame. She habitually uses her platform for good, from supporting the LGBTQ+ community before it was "cool” to do so to postponing the release of her upcoming album to respect everything happening with COVID-19. 

It’s an artist's ability to not only entertain us but also use art and beauty as a guiding light during dark times that makes them poignant. It’s the Marry the Night effect, so to speak. So to honor the artist, I reached out to her makeup artist, who's also the global artistry director of Lady Gaga’s makeup line Haus Laboratories, Sarah Tanno-Stewart. You’ll hear firsthand from Tanno-Stewart about Gaga’s most iconic beauty moments and her tips for replicating them at home. But first, a little about the woman behind Gaga’s looks—because while we’re born this way, we can all still use a little help along the way.

For those who aren’t familiar with your work, can you tell us a little about how you became a celebrity makeup artist? Who are some of your clients? 

I never really set out to be a "celebrity makeup artist.” I started in fashion and have become extremely lucky to be able to work with some of the most inspiring women out there. Some of my regular clients include Lady Gaga, Priyanka Chopra-Jonas, Kate Bosworth, and Sofia Boutella.

When did you first start doing Lady Gaga’s makeup? 

The first time I ever did Gaga’s makeup was back in September 2009. That’s when my life changed forever. We have had so many extremely special moments together over the last decade. 

Does Gaga have a go-to makeup look? 

I think she is the ultimate chameleon when it comes to makeup. She is extremely open to trying anything and everything, which makes me the luckiest artist in the world. If she had a signature, it would be a big wing liner and a bright mouth. 

And have you had any all-time favorite looks you created for her? 

One for the books was creating the first campaign image for our makeup brand Haus Laboratories that we launched in September 2019. It was the most rewarding and full-circle moment for me. As Gaga's long-time friend, makeup artist, and now as the global artistry director of Haus to use products that we created together with the product development team and see it all come to life. For us, it's more about the transformative power of makeup, how we want to make people feel brave, inspired to express themselves and most importantly practice self-love. 

Do you have any products you love to use on Gaga? Or any products she loves using that you can share? 

One of the first products we wanted to create for Haus Laboratories was the perfect blacker-than-black matte liquid liner, and it’s a fan favorite. Eye-Lie-Ner in Punk is something we use almost every single day. It has a tip wide enough to drag on its side and also sharp enough for the most intricate details. We also love the new Le Monster Matte Lip Crayons. They are the most comfortable matte lipstick you will ever wear. Try Talk Dirty for a perfect everyday color or my favorite red lipstick, Mastered.

Okay, let’s get into a time machine and go through some Gaga’s most iconic beauty moments Tanno-Stewart created… 

WHAT: 87th Annual Academy Awards, 2015 

"Ah, what a night to remember,” Tanno-Stewart reminisces. "Gaga was wearing custom Azzedine Alaïa, about to sing the iconic Sound of Music, and we opted for this classic Hollywood beauty look fit for the Oscars.” 

WHAT: Super Bowl, 2017

Does this look remind you of Gaga’s earlier fame monster days—before even the Euphoria makeup craze? That’s the intention, per Tanno-Stewart: "Performing at the Super Bowl was such a huge moment in Gaga’s career.” she continues, " I wanted her to look like the most iconic version of herself so that she could look back at her performance 10 years later and still love everything about it.” 

WHAT: 60th Annual Grammy Awards, 2018

One could say Gaga’s look for the 60th Annual Grammy Awards was made for the heavy metal lovers, but in reality, Tanno-Stewart’s vision was "for Gaga’s eyes to look like a starry night. Black with touches of glitter. Accentuated with a soft nude glossy lip.”

WHAT: A Star Is Born red carpet, 2018 

"Gaga’s look for the A Star Is Born red carpet may be my most favorite look of all time,” Tanno-Stewart confessed. "I know it’s very soft and angelic, but I’ve never seen my friend radiate like she did this day.”

"I loved this look. She wanted to feel strong. I thought of creating a strong crease with a defined eye and glossy mouth,” Tanno-Stewart professed to us.

Honestly, you can’t round up looks of the past decade without speaking to the downright odd outfits that the decade produced—including Lady Gaga’s one-and-only meat dress. It should be noted that Gaga’s style has evolved over the decade and she’s come to wear gowns you can buy at Bergdorfs instead of the grocery store, but this look truly speaks to the time in which style went not only avant-garde but became a way to speak about the issues facing the times.

WHAT: Royal Wedding, 2011 

WEAR: Alexander McQueen wedding gown

Not only was the past decade filled with contemporary looks, but it had its historical moments too—like when Kate Middleton married Prince William and became the Duchess of Cambridge. Not only did we get to witness the royal wedding of the decade, but watching the duchess make her way down the aisle in this Alexander McQueen gown was just a taste of all her stylish and classic moments to come.

WHAT: Commander-in-Chief's Ball, 2013

Michelle Obama was, still is, and forever will be iconic for so many reasons. Not only was it incredibly powerful for women of color around the world to be able to witness a black First Lady of the United States, but Michelle also brought a breath of fresh air to political style. Case in point: She opted to go beyond the typically mundane looks and support upcoming designers of color. Talk about a stylish fashion statement.

Lupita Nyong’o may from time to time get snubbed by the Academy (ahem, where’s her nomination for Black Panther or Us?), but in no way could you overlook her style. From the moment she arrived on the red carpet in this plunging Prada light blue gown back in 2013, she established herself as someone with style to watch—and brought it all decade long.

WHO: Rihanna 

WHAT: Council of Fashion Designers of America Awards, 2014

One could say that the 2010s were defined by two things: the naked dress, and Rihanna—which, coincidentally became one for the CFDA awards back in 2014. Truly, only Rihanna could pull off a barely-there dress made out of 230,000 Swarovski crystals—and I’m okay with it. She not only blessed us with this gem of a look, but also, she launched Fenty Beauty, Fenty Lingerie, and her luxury clothing label, Fenty, this past decade cementing the fact that It was Rihanna’s decade and we were all just living in it.

WHO: Zendaya Coleman

WHAT: 87th Annual Academy Awards, 2015 

WEAR: Vivienne Westwood gown

Of all the stars, it must be noted that Zendaya had the greatest glow-up of the decade. The former Disney star not only redefined her career through shows like, Euphoria, but women of color everywhere all felt seen when she would show up to award shows rocking her natural hair paired with an equally bomb look. Whatever texture, and whatever outfit Z wore, we all were left wondering if we could become the carpet, just so she could step on our neck. 

WHO: Beyoncé 

WHAT: China: Through the Looking Glass, Met Gala, 2015

WEAR: Givenchy gown

Beyoncé once said, "Don’t hurt yourself,” but honestly, I've spent the last decade hurt. As any member of the Beehive knows, Beyoncé had us going through the past decade (in the best way). She emanated a level of excellence that only Beyoncé can achieve. I mean, I could list all the incredible things she did in the last decade: producing an iconic visual album, launching her apparel line, being the first black woman to headline Coachella and turning it into a record-breaking Netflix documentary—and we haven’t even gotten to any of the fire fits she served us with. But let’s be real, this singular look says it all.

WHO: Zoe Saldaña

WHAT: Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology, Met Gala, 2016

WEAR: Dolce & Gabbana gown; Christian Louboutin heels

One would be naive to not correlate style with Zoe Saldaña—I mean, just look at this Dolce & Gabbana gown she wore to the Met Gala back in 2016. But, beyond blessing us with her beauty, Saldaña has continuously spoken up about the lack of LatinX representation within Hollywood over the past decade. Whoever said caring wasn’t stylish didn’t know about Saldaña.

WHO: Amal Clooney

WHAT: 69th Annual Cannes Film Festival, 2016

WEAR: Versace gown; Cartier jewels

While the wider population may know Amal purely by her husband’s last name, the truth is she’s so much more than that. Not only is Amal a lawyer, and human rights activist, but she's also a style icon. Gracing both red carpets and the United Nations floor with iconic looks over the past decade, Amal is proof that you can, dare I say, have it all.

WHAT: 2016 MTV Video Music Awards

WEAR: A vintage Galliano dress 

Even the most anti-Kardashian of people can’t shy away from admitting the impact Kim Kardashian West has had in the past decade on style. Aside from her stake in rebranding the desirability of the bodycon dress, Kim’s style has been both the inspiration and focus of controversy for the past 10 years. After all, no other celebrity sent fast-fashion sites in a tizzy to re-create her looks in a matter of minutes; and no other person has quite brought to the forefront conversations around cultural appropriation versus appreciation. So no matter what you feel, there’s no denying this woman’s place in the cultural zeitgeist.

Yes, I know this is not one person, but to be fair no other duo has quite shaken up the fashion world since Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen. Stepping into the limelight back in the early 2010s, Bella Hadid and Gigi Hadid have modeled in just about every fashion week since then. But their style is by no means limited to the runways; they both have served up iconic red carpet and street style looks, solidifying the fact that fashion runs in their veins.

WHO: Zoë Kravitz 

WHAT: 69th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards, 2017 

WEAR: Dior Haute Couture 

While some may recollect a time when Zoë Kravitz was a teenager, this past decade she solidified her own with breakout roles in productions like Big Little Lies. But her career isn’t the only reason this woman can define the previous decade; one could say she was one of the only stars to continuously rock her natural tresses on the red carpet. And while this may seem minor, the past 10 years have challenged beauty norms in a way that has evolved the definition of beauty and style to be more inclusive.

WHO: Victoria Beckham 

WHAT: NYFW F/W 18

WEAR: Head-to-toe Victoria Beckham

No other woman quite encapsulated what it means to be posh in the 2010s other than Posh Spice herself. She didn’t have one iconic look of the decade per se, rather, Victoria Beckham’s ability to continually serve up a pantsuit look, is well, something for the ages. 

WHO: Priyanka Chopra 

WHAT: Heavenly Bodies: Fashion & the Catholic Imagination, Met Gala, 2018

WEAR: Ralph Lauren Swarovski crystal-embellished gown; Cartier jewels 

Priyanka Chopra could be one of Hollywood’s most underrated style icons. While some may have first encountered the actress upon her marriage to Nick Jonas, she has been a steady fashion plate and one of the highest-paid Bollywood actresses for quite some time. But beyond her career and activism, Chopra always comes correct. Whether it’s her street style or during award season, the actress breaks all the style "rules” in the best way.

WHO: Meghan Markle 

WHAT: Royal Wedding, 2018 

WEAR: Stella McCartney dress; Cartier earrings

Y’all thought we were done with the royal weddings? Nope. This past decade blessed us with not one but two. And in that fashion, Meghan Markle also blessed us with this second controversial reception dress from Stella McCartney on her big day, along with the most fabulous guest list to ever attend a wedding. And while some questioned (and continue to question) Meghan’s style choices from that day on, for many, as they tuned in to watch the royal nuptials, they realized that for the first time they could see themselves reflected in a Dutchess and her personal style. 

WHO: Chrissy Teigen 

WHAT: Vanity Fair Oscar Party, 2019 

WEAR: Marchesa dress; Lorraine Schwartz jewelry; Jimmy Choo heels

Chrissy Teigen is many things—boring is not one of them. Not only does she constantly impress me with her witty banter (mostly found on Twitter); but her on- and off-duty style over the past decade continues to surprise and delight me and her millions of fans. Whether she’s spotted with her adorable babies or walking the red carpet next to her Instagram husband, this woman looks good without fail.

WHO: Celine Dion

WHAT: Paris Fashion Week, 2019 

WEAR: Chanel jumpsuit and matching belt

Honestly, what is life without Celine Dion? Do you know any other women who can pull off a Chanel spandex jumpsuit? That look aside, the Canadian musician has been in the spotlight since she was 18, but like wine, her style has only gotten better with time. Her ability to wear everything from spandex to gowns this past decade is proof that true style has no age.

At the end of the decade, we saw Lana Condor begin to establish herself as not only someone to watch on screen (with her popular Netflix film, To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before) but on the red carpet as well. Only time will tell how Condor’s style evolves, but from what we’ve seen thus far we’re placing heavy bets she’ll be defining the next decade of what it means to embody style too.

As you probably know, it’s no easy feat picking one iconic look from a legendary style icon. While Lizzo’s rise to popularity was over the past few years, she in many ways is the fullest expression of how style has evolved over the past decade. Meet Tenisha Light-Caba

As someone who has spent her life selling, caring for, and buying vintage designer and non-label jewelry, she’s got a treasure trove of tips that will change your accessory game.

On how to curate a jewelry collection you love…

 1. Invest in everyday pieces. 

Light-Caba’s first tip for anyone just starting to accumulate items is to invest in minimalist pieces you can wear to work every day—like a good pair of hoops. Everyone should own pieces they feel comfortable in and not just double down on the latest trends.

2. Don’t shy away from a statement piece. 

"So many people shy away from statement pieces, but don’t be afraid to take a risk,” she explained. "It’s a good thing to feel fierce in a bold statement necklace from the ’90s, so make sure you have that one piece that makes you feel amazing.”

3. Don’t be afraid to drop a pretty penny. 

As Light-Caba told us, "If you see a great Dior or Chanel piece, buy it and make the investment. Those pieces are incredibly rare and hard to find, and you can’t assure you’ll see another version again, because you just won’t. And even if you decide later you no longer love the piece, vintage designer jewelry has an incredibly high resale value, so it’s worth your bang for your buck.”

4. Take your time.

Whether you’re shopping for vintage jewelry or secondhand clothing, the key to finding amazing pieces is taking your time. Light-Caba said she cannot stress this enough: "Don’t let anyone pressure you into making a decision, and make sure you’re comfortable with your purchase. You’re going to spend some money, so take the time to make sure what you’re buying is worth the investment and that it isn’t going to just take up space and never be worn.”

 5. Buy only what you love.

Possibly the most important part of curating a collection of jewelry is making sure you actually love what you’re buying. As Caba told us, "Don’t be afraid to take a risk and to claim the feeling of loving what you’re wearing. When you love your jewelry, the compliments will come. And of course, you’re not buying Chanel for the compliments; you’re buying it for you.”

6. Check the condition.

The key to a great collection is actually investing in pieces that will still be intact years from now. Caba’s rule of thumb is to try to avoid pieces with a lot of metalware (as they can tarnish over time), and to make sure, again, you take your time to inspect before you commit to purchasing the piece. The better the condition, the more confidence you’ll feel in your investment and the more you’ll actually wear what you bought.

On how to spot quality pieces…

1. Check the weight of the jewelry piece.

One of the biggest things you want to check for is the weight of the piece. Light-Caba explains, "If you’re going to a consignment store, they typically have great things. But when you’re out thrifting or at a flea market and a gold piece feels really lightweight, I’d suggest passing on it. Even if it’s in good condition and it feels really light, that’s a sign it may be aluminum, and over time, those pieces are harder to care for as the metal starts to wear, or if you feel like you want to replate it, you can’t, as most platers don’t work with aluminum. Most good gold or silver vintage jewelry has a little weight to it.”

2. Check for the trademark.

In addition to checking the weight of the piece, Light-Caba says, "You also want to see if the piece is signed or has a trademark. While it’s not the only key factor, right away, if it’s signed, that is a very good indication it could be higher-quality materials. Anything pure gold or silver should be signed and marked silver, sterling silver, or 0.925 or 18-karat gold (for instance). If it’s not marked, you should pass, unless it’s tested on the spot by the collector, you trust the source, and know what you’re buying.”

3. Inspect your stones. 

"If you are buying anything with crystals or stones, please take your time to inspect the piece to make sure no stones are missing in prominent places, and if it claims to be a specific type of gem, test its authenticity. If the piece is missing a small gem in the back, no one really notices that, but if it’s in the front, that could become a problem, especially when most vintage pieces are final sale,” she says.

4. The price tag tells all.

In addition to the weight and authenticity of the piece, the price can be a great indicator of whether the piece you’re buying is authentic or not. As Light-Caba said, "a heavier vintage silver necklace is going to cost you, but you’ll know it’s real.”

5. Familiarize yourself with the metals.

Whether you’re shopping for silver or gold, it’s important to understand that most vintage pieces are actually composed of mixed metal. Most pieces will be gold- or silver-plated and rhodium-plated—and they’ll come in a variety of colors. Because of this, Light-Caba suggests when shopping for gold that you know what kind of gold you’re looking for—as the color varies from 14- to 22-karat gold.

For 100% silver, another trick to check its authenticity and coloring is rubbing it with your finger. It should shine. If it's doesn’t, then it’s rhodium-plated—which is not a bad thing—but it means taking care of the piece will be a different process. In a nutshell, it’s important to know what kind of metal you’re looking for for your collection. None of them is bad; it’s just about what you want.

On how to take care of your collection…

Cleaning your jewelry properly is the way to not only celebrate the beauty of the pieces but also ensure their longevity. As Light-Caba told us, there are different ways to clean each type of metal. 

For gold- and rhodium-plated pieces: 

As Light-Caba suggests, "You want to use rubbing alcohol—it works like a gem. People make the mistake of thinking they need water or need to drop it into a cleaner, and that’s just not the case. Other abrasive cleaners can strip the gold; rubbing alcohol just polishes the gold. Just make sure you use a T-shirt–like material to clean your pieces.” 

For silver pieces:

"You want to use a dry cloth; you don’t want to put it in a liquid because it will be too shiny. You just want to lightly polish it without water to give it the perfect shine,” says Light-Caba. 

For crystal pieces:

Light-Caba says that you can use water, but she likes to use a dash of Windex on a T-shirt cloth to have the stones shining like diamonds.

Ever since rumors began to swirl that Lady Gaga (queen of lashes, sparkle, and high-glam beauty moments) would be launching her very own makeup line, Haus Laboratories, fans and beauty lovers have been agog—sorry, couldn't resist—with major anticipation. And, after months and months of product teasing, pre-ordering products on Prime Day, and keeping careful tabs on the Haus Laboratories Instagram account for any and all updates, the time has finally arrived.

A few hours before midnight (PST) last Monday, September 16, Lady Gaga announced during the brand's Los Angeles–based launch party that the line was officially for sale—both on the Haus Laboratories website and Amazon (the brand's one official retail partner).

As Gaga explained in front of her L.A. fans and launch attendees, Haus Labs has not only been a feverish passion project on a personal level (sharing that she quite literally stewed and stirred formula ideas on the kitchen floor), but it's a full-out "glam attack" on what the world automatically assumes a beauty brand ought to be. Haus Laboratories, she says, is different.

As stated on the brand's website and as Gaga reiterated live on Monday, beauty isn't in the eye of the beholder—beauty is found in the way we see ourselves. "At Haus, we want you to love yourself, and it is our mission to spread kindness, bravery, and creativity by providing tools for self-expression and reinvention," she states. "This is your glam. Your expression. Your artistry. Your rules."

Gaga went on to share that while she didn't grow up ever feeling beautiful—a battle that's still very present—she did, however, discover the power of makeup, and a beauty and creativity she could foster while experimenting with the products sitting underneath her mirror. 

"I found the superhero within me by looking in the mirror and seeing who I wanted to be," she explains. "Sometimes, beauty doesn't come naturally from within. But I'm so grateful that makeup inspired a bravery in me I didn't know I had. I’ve come to accept that I discovered my beauty by having the ability to invent myself and transform. They said I was weird, but really, I was just born this way."

So what magical elixirs and powders lie within the transformative possibilities of Haus Labs? Think lots of wearable drama by way of shimmering liquid eye pigments, power- and pigment-packed glosses, wickedly creamy lip liners, and, of course, some last-minute surprises in the form of some extra, very Gaga-esque eye adornments. (Up until launch day, we didn't know we were going to get a felt-tip liquid eyeliner, lacy eye "Armor Masque," or wing-tip cat-eye stickers out of the deal.) Oh, and everything, by the way, is vegan, cruelty-free, and handily kept under a $30 price point.

Now, as fun as all of the above is, it's admittedly high-impact, and my fellow minimal makeup–wearing co-worker, Courtney Higgs, and I were left wondering just how wearable Haus would be in our day-to-day beauty life. You know, when we're not accepting an Oscar, singing our hearts out in a stadium, or walking the red carpet. So we decided to convene over the entire Haus collection and choose products to test-drive during a normal day at the office. Then, because we're not complete buzzkills, we chose a few more products to apply post-work duty for some extra intensity and Gaga-inspired flare. (Hypothetically, an amped-up look we might wear out and about on a Friday night.)

Below, we're sharing both our daytime and nighttime-elevated Haus makeup looks alongside photos and reviews. Keep scrolling!

Courtney's Daytime Look

I don’t wear like to wear a ton of makeup during the day, so I definitely wanted to make sure the look I created was mellow and in line with my usual vibe. I did my normal skincare and face routines and then went in with literally one dot of Glam Attack Liquid Shimmer Powder in Chained Ballerina ($20) on each of my lids. I was shocked at how much color I got out of the tiniest amount of product, so to soften the severity I smudged the glittery black gel with my ring finger until it turned into a soft, shimmery charcoal color.

Then, I lightly lined my eyes right at the lash line with the Liquid Eye-Lie-Ner ($20). I loved how quickly it dried down to a super-black, super-matte finish. For my lips, I used the RIP Lip Liner in Drag ($16), and I have to say, this deep mauve hue was super flattering against my brown skin—not at all chalky or ashy. To finish, I patted, again, one tiny dot of Le Riot Lip Gloss in Blaze ($) and smoothed it out until most of the sheen had been subdued to look like a lightly glossy stain.

How She Intensified It

My only strategy to amp up the look for nighttime was to add more of everything. I took the same Glam Attack Liquid Shimmer Powder and placed two extra dots of the product on each lid as well as a little along my lower lash line. This time when I smudged it out, the dark color remained, creating a disco ball effect. To jazz up my subtle daytime liner, I added the Wingtip stickers from the Eye Armor Kit ($35) to the corners of each of my eyes, before going back over my light liquid line with more of a heavy hand.

I re-applied the same lip products, this time letting the high sheen stay in place. Overall, I definitely felt like I was wearing a ton of makeup, even though I had probably only used around 10 dots of actual product all day. That really says something about the potency of these formulas. That said, the only one I’d likely incorporate into daily use is the liner and the gloss; the rest will have to wait for a big night out.

My Daytime Look

As much as I love Lady Gaga, and as much as I admire her signature ballsy makeup moments, mega-watt makeup just isn't my jam when it comes to daily—or even special occasion—wear. Day to day, I'm either bare-faced (my preference), or I'll stick to my tried-and-true uniform of foundation, concealer, some blush and bronzer, lots of mascara, and probably a subtle flick of black liquid liner. That said, even though I was worried Haus would be saturated with strictly high-impact colors and heavy formulas, that was so not the case.

I really appreciate that, true to Gaga's word, this line is wearable for everyone and every kind of makeup aesthetic. Yes, the formulas are high-performance and saturated with satisfying pigment, but it's easy to mix and match in order to customize your vibe. You can go all out with a Vampira-like lip, elongated cat eye, and graphite glitter-crusted eyes, or you can swipe on a clear crystal colored gloss and touch of liner and call it a day. Plus, in addition to the brand's customizable genius, the formulas themselves really are amazing—super-blendable, surprisingly easy and low-maintenance to apply, and boasting fabulous consistency. I'm a makeup snob, and I'm honestly impressed. 

For my daytime work look, I wanted to go with a neutral-ish lip, glittery pink lids, and a little bit of liner for some extra definition around my lashline. After taking stock of the entire collection, I opted for the RIP Lip Liner in Myth ($16) topped with Le Riot Lip Gloss in Entranced ($18). For my eyes, I used (and obsessed over) the Glam Attack Liquid Shimmer Powder in Aphrodite ($20) and Rose B*tch ($20) finished with a quick draw of Liquid Eye-Lie-Ner ($20) since my makeup never feels complete without a super-subtle cat eye. 

I will say that the shadow and the eyeliner here were the standouts. Like, truly, I'm obsessed with that shimmer and couldn't get over how easy it was to apply, how perfectly it dried down, and how subtle and beautifully shimmery it looked. I can't wait to keep experiment with some of the bolder colors, but this was a good toe-dip for me. As far as the lip liners and gloss, I'm left satisfied but not overjoyed. That being said, I'm also not a gloss or liner person! I'll keep the glosses in my arsenal because I like that they're sticky enough to last and maintain their lacquer-like shine for hours (even after lunch), but I had trouble with the liner shades. I didn't find any to be flattering for my skin tone or makeup vibe—they all read either a little to purple or a little too orange/brown for me. 

How I Intensified It

For nighttime, and because I do like an intense lip every so often, I really went for it and traded in my daytime vibe for RIP Lip Liner in Slayer ($16) topped with Le Riot Lip Gloss in Scream ($18). For my eyes, I kept everything the same but added the Wingtip stickers (and more liner) from the Eye Armor Kit ($35).

This look was intense. I liked or had an appreciation for everything individually, but after all was said and done, I probably wouldn't go quite so all-out on both eyes and lips IRL. It was more dramatic than I anticipated! If you're into a dark and vampy lip, you will absolutely love Slayer and Scream, but they are intense, so tread carefully with your application. Even though I think the stickers are brilliant, I probably won't be wearing them. I'm actually pretty good with my lining talents, and I like something a little less elongated on my own face. But I think theses stickers are a great idea for people seeking a really dramatic cat eye and for anyone who might not have the confidence or patience to do the look from scratch using a pen alone.

If there is anyone who knows the ins and outs of womenswear, it's award-winning fashion designer Brandon Maxwell. Since founding his luxury women's ready-to-wear label in 2015, Brandon has made quite a name for himself. Some of his accomplishments just this year include winning the CFDA Award for Womenswear Designer of the Year, dressing Lady Gaga for the 2019 Met Gala, and, last but not least, being a judge on Project Runway. The finale of the show airs tonight, and before it does, we wanted to get the inside scoop on what it's really like to be a judge on the show. Okay, you caught us—we inquired about much more than just Project Runway, but how could we not? When you have the chance to chat with Brandon Maxwell, Lady Gaga's stylist-turned-BFF, you chat. 

Without giving too much away, Brandon opened up about everything from his process working with Lady Gaga for the Met to what it was like to get used to being on camera for Project Runway. In true Who What Wear fashion, we also pressed him for his take on everyday fashion staples, and we were not disappointed. Read the interview below to see what we mean. 

You're a fairly new-to-the-scene designer, so I'm sure being a judge and mentor on Project Runway hits close to home in many ways. Can you tell us what being a judge on the show has meant to you?

For me, being there, I felt like the world seized the glamorous side of [fashion], but the truth of the matter is that 99% of the time, you’re just trying to keep the light bill paid and you’re working many hours a day. Although it is incredible, and we are so fortunate to be able to do something every day that makes another person feel good, I don’t want to mislead anyone, especially younger people looking to get into the business. It’s not all champagne and parties.

I know we’re supposed to judge challenge by challenge, but I really do judge on the overall body of the work I’ve seen so far because I do understand that not every runway look or runway show is going to be your best every single time. It’s about getting back up when you’ve fallen or when you’ve made a mistake and you’re trying to do better. It’s really up to them to use this launching pad to become the star, because we can’t do that for them. 

What's one thing no one tells you about being a judge on Project Runway?

I’m the only one on the show who has never been on TV previously. For me, it was a totally new experience in general. There’s a lot to deal with to even get used to having your body on television. Having cameras all around you, going into hair and makeup, Spanx, and getting comfortable in your own skin were all things I was really unprepared for. Also, they probably don’t show it a lot, but behind the scenes and on the show, we were all very emotional because looking at the contestants up there is kind of like holding up a mirror up to yourself.

Favorite memory from the show so far?

My favorite memory, which I have talked about before, it’s not a great memory, but I was right in the middle of an episode filming on camera and took a quick bathroom break when my mom called me to tell me she was sick. Every one of those women that I sit there with really lifted me up and wrapped me up. I was so not sure what to expect when I started filming that show because it was so foreign to me, but at that moment, I felt like I was home. I couldn’t have imagined getting that call with anyone else around me.

We have to talk about the Met Gala, which was basically a Lady Gaga/Brandon Maxwell fashion show. How did you come up with the concept for not one but four red carpet looks?

[Gaga and I] have been best friends for over a decade. We were actually on a trip for her birthday just with our best friends talking about it a little bit by the pool—going to the Met together. We worked together, as I was her stylist for many years, so that line of friendship and creativity is all sort of blurred. I think people probably imagine we sit down at a table and come up with some idea, but it’s really just evolved naturally.

We went back and forth talking about whether or not she should change [looks], which is also something she’s done many times. I think that she's very camp in her person. She really embodies what that is, and so it would’ve been very hard to say in one dress the story that we were trying to tell, which was less of a story of the clothes and more of a story of the person.

What has been one of your most memorable moments as a designer—a notable woman you've dressed or even a major setback that taught you something?

Interesting that you ask about setbacks because I’ve been saying this a lot: Setbacks and failures are the things that have really gotten me to where I am. I feel like people from the outside see these moments on the carpet and editorials and may think These must be the defining moments. But behind every one moment like that are hundreds of moments of being knocked to your knees. I used to be someone, especially when I started, who was a little bit of a perfectionist and very scared of failure. Four years later, I almost get high on failure because I really look at it and say ‘What is this here to teach me?’

Will I have great moments where I will be proud for the rest of my life to have dressed Michelle Obama, Meghan Markle, Lady Gaga, Oprah, and all of these powerful women? Absolutely. But I’m also proud of what the experience of having the opportunity to create for those women has taught me. I’m not someone who sits in a suit all day long—I’m in sweatpants ordering seamless 18 hours a day just trying to figure it out. I don’t want to mislead people that it’s all fun and games. 

Can you speak to a few summer trends you're loving right now?

What I would say for summer trends, no matter the season, is that every woman needs a great pair of black pants, a blazer, and a little black dress, and you’re good.

Any you're hating? Why?

I hate to be judge-y, even though I’m paid to do that on TV, but I don’t love anything that feels really ripped and exposing. I guess there is a time and a place, but to each their own. 

Word on the street is you grew up in Texas. What is one trend we can always expect Southern girls to wear during the summer?

Those smocked and linen-type colorful dresses from Mexico. They have little florals on them and come in so many colors. Every girl I know in Texas is wearing that over her bathing suit with a great little sandal, and it’s transitional to lunch. I’m deeply obsessed with them. I haven’t put them in my show, but it’s on my reference board every season. It’s something my best friend my whole life wore, and she still wears them now as a 34-year-old woman.

Tonight, 2019 award season kicks off with the Golden Globes, where the biggest stars in films and television will be honored for their performances. The actress wore a strapless lavender Valentino gown detailed with a dramatic train, voluminous sleeves, and matching purple hair. Many fans on Twitter were quick to point out that her Cinderella-like gown makes her red carpet appearance very royal. Let me preface this story by saying this: If you haven't seen A Star Is Born yet, get yourself to a theater this weekend and (spoiler alert!) bring tissues. If you have already seen it and are still listening to the soundtrack on repeat (just me?), let's take a minute to talk about the outfits. Now, this film is in no way a fashion movie—the opening storyline actually explicitly requires it not to be.

Not to spoil anything for you, but her outfits aren't anything sensational—and that's precisely the point. The plotline asks you to take Ally at face value and recognize her for her talent instead of her external looks. However, she does have a few outfits that are completely worth noting—with flashes of rock 'n' roll chain belts on her Miaou pants (a fashion girl–favorite brand, may I point out) in one scene and fall 2018's favorite leopard trend popping up on her Hudson jeans in another. So, if you, like me, can't stop thinking about (and listening to) A Star Is Born, let's take another look at the four outfits worth replicating.

When Jackson surprised Ally by pulling her up on stage to sing the duet she penned with him, she was wearing the aforementioned Miaou pants. Not only is Miaou an It brand right now, but chain belts are having a major moment. Simply add a white tee, and your look is set.

Leopard is another major fall 2018 trend, and I love Ally's rocker twist she put on her printed Hudson jeans with the addition of Jackson's black bolero hat. This year's Halloween costume, anyone?

Striped pants are one of those trends that will always be a thing, so simply add a tank and another 2018 favorite: white mules.

For Ally's first festival performance, she chose a sheer polka-dot blouse that is very of-the-moment right now. I personally would skip the choker and add statement '80s earrings, but maybe that's just me.

And now an honorable mention for Jackson's hat game—his fedora collection throughout the movie is impressive. His signature accessory feels authentic for a rock 'n' roll star, and I'm into copying his look as well.

She’s rarely seen out of head-to-toe black, hence the nickname given to her followers: "the crows.”

Marlene Dietrich

No one bats an eyelid at a woman wearing a trouser suit today, but back in the ’30s, it was considered taboo. Marlene Dietrich wore hers with a top hat and bow tie to really hammer the message home in the 1930 film Morocco.

Lady Gaga

Never has a single garment received quite as many column inches as Lady Gaga’s dress made out of raw cuts of flank steak. In an interview with Ellen DeGeneres (who happens to be vegan), Gaga said, “As you know, I am the most judgment-free human being on the earth. However, it has many interpretations but for me. … If we don’t stand up for what we believe in, and if we don’t fight for our rights, pretty soon we’re going to have as much rights as the meat on our bones.”

Michéle Lamy

It seems like Michèle Lamy has squeezed five lives into her 74 years. She’s worked as a lawyer, a cabaret dancer, the owner of Les Deux Cafés (an L.A. spot where celebrities and socialites gathered in the ’90s) and a singer. As Rick Owens’s other half and a blazing creative in the art and fashion worlds, Michèle is recognised for her work as much as her look: She pencils her forehead with eyeliner, dips her fingers in Japanese vegetable dye to make them black, and wears gold and diamond grills. She’s easy to pick out of the sea of street stylers at Paris Fashion Week, that’s for sure.

If you think today’s Instamodels invented the “naked” dress, think again. The year was 1974, and Cher wore an entirely sheer gown with white feathers trailing from sleeves and some strategically placed silver on the body to the Met Gala. In 1988, she cemented the trend in this barely-there Bob Mackie creation at the Oscars, where she won Best Actress for her role in Moonstruck.

Grace Jones

The award for the most outrageous and on-point stage outfits goes to Grace Jones by a landslide. The 70-year-old has worn everything from a tiger-print bodystocking to a spangled Cleopatra-style headdress in a career spanning four decades. She also hasn’t lost her bite one bit, either.

Daphne Guinness

Daphne Guinness’s blonde-and-black Cruella de Vil beehive is almost as famous as her shoes, which tend to be vertiginous platforms without any visible heel. The 50-year-old muse to Alexander McQueen and owner of the late Isabella Blow’s entire wardrobe told Vogue in 2005, “I like the really show-offy pieces; I always do!”

Coco Chanel

We owe a lifelong debt of gratitude to Coco Chanel for making jersey and trousers not just acceptable but desirable. She also debuted her first tweed suit (a staple of Karl Lagerfeld’s present-day collections) as early as 1923—four decades before Yves Saint Laurent’s Le Smoking tuxedo.

Iris Apfel

She has spectacles the size of saucers, enough necklaces to fill Aladdin’s cave and 96 years of inimitable stylishness under her belt. No rebellious dresser list would be complete without Iris Apfel, who told The Guardian earlier this year that she’d like to be remembered “as the world’s oldest living teenager.” Her everything-but-the-kitchen-sink fashion sense gets better with age.

Over the years, Lady Gaga's Grammys looks have earned plenty of buzz (like when she arrived in an egg back in 2011), but this year there's one thing especially notable about her red carpet ensemble, a large pink diamond and pink stone ring that she's been wearing for the last few months.

Dressed in an Armani Privé bodysuit and full skirt, the best album nominee was one of the first to arrive on the 2018 red carpet. Like many of her peers, Gaga also accessorized with a cluster of white roses in support of Times Up. While Gaga wore the eye-catching pink ring on her right ring finger, there is only speculation around an engagement to her current boyfriend talent agent Christian Carino. Update, October 16, 2018: Almost a year after news first broke, Lady Gaga has finally confirmed her engagement to talent agent Christian Carino. The A Star Is Born actress made a rare public appearance with Carino at Elle's Women in Hollywood event last night, where Lady Gaga accepted an award with an emotional speech in which she thanked her fiancé, Christian, as well as "all the loved ones in my life who take care of me every day."

"Let's lift our voices," Lady Gaga said on stage, per Elle. "I know we are, but let's get louder. And not just as women, but as humans. And see that there are great men in the world and ask them to hold our hands. For justice. That our voices be heard. Whatever our story may be. For an equal standing. Well, now Gaga will be starring as the fashion icon herself for the upcoming series on FX: Versace/Cunanan: An American Crime Story, according to Us Weekly. The show will be investigating the high-profile murder of Gianni Versace in 1997 by serial killer Andrew Cunanan. Ryan Murphy will executive-produce it, and after seeing his amazing work with the singer on American Horror Story, we're willing to bet this series is going to be just as intense. Filming is set to begin in early 2017, and as fashion lovers, we can't wait to watch and learn more about the crazy story behind this major fashion house.

Is it just us, or is Carpool Karaoke the most genius thing to come out of late-night TV? We've never met a segment we didn't like, from Michelle Obama belting out Beyoncé to Selena Gomez jamming out to her own songs.
