I spot trends for a living, and this season I’ve been tracking a compelling shift in party footwear. At last night’s Gotham Film Awards in New York, stilettos were noticeably scarce. In their place? A long-forgotten heel shape that suddenly feels entirely fresh. Completing many of the night’s most memorable looks, Chanel’s new pumps emerged as the fashion person’s shoe of choice.

A modern riff on the house’s signature styles, these elegant pumps feature the classic two-tone finish Chanel is known for. Their compelling upgrade, however, lies in the sculptural cone heel—a subtle detail that modernises the otherwise timeless design.

I spotted both Teyana Taylor and Kristen Stewart embrace the trend last night. With an unmistakably ’80s cut—high vamp, clean lines and a contrast cap toe—the pair created a retro-leaning shape that lifted each outfit in the most sophisticated way. Styled with voluminous skirts, Teyana’s billowing Chanel look was sharply grounded by the polished pumps, while Kristen’s sleek pencil skirt made the perfect partner, amplifying the heel’s throwback charm without tipping into costume territory.

More interesting than stilettos and more elevated than wedges, this heel trend is poised to run circles around its seasonal competitors. From diffused, soft-focused makeup to freshly snipped micro bangs, Kristen Stewart’s March cover look is what springtime makeup and hair dreams are made of. Inspired by the actor’s signature effortless approach, Stewart’s longtime hairstylist, Adir Abergel, describes the aesthetic as one part Audrey Hepburn, one part early ’80s. (See her choppy bangs which were re-cut the morning of our shoot.) To accentuate, Chanel makeup artist Kate Lee was influenced by Sarah Moon and early ’90s Paolo Roversi photography, creating an overall finish that’s both “mysterious” and “out of focus.” The result? A melding of retro inspiration that feels timeless yet unique.

“Kristen is a chameleon,” Abergel tells me when I ask about the star’s hair evolution. “It’s not a linear evolution—it’s her, always. She’s really timeless. Right now, we’re letting all of the layers grow, and we’re only focused on trimming the bangs as a focal point.” Lee echoes Abergel’s sentiment, sharing that regardless of Stewart's makeup look—be it “nude and clean” or “strong and defiant,” the finish is always bold and inspiring, which makes for the ultimate collaborative process.

“We really don't come to a shoot with any pre-concepts,” explains Abergel. “We see the clothes, we understand who the photographer is, and we decide what we want to feel that day in terms of storytelling. I always bring ideas to the table, and so does Kristen. Then, we meet at the exact spot that feels honest to us."

Despite the many hair renditions Stewart and Abergel have conceptualized in the past, here, the focus would be her new, very blunt, choppy micro bangs. (If you’re the type of brave soul who cuts their bangs at home, Abergel recommends always erring on the longer side and cutting at an angle—never straight across—to give them a cool, broken edge.)

“When styling, Kristen and I always use Virtue’s Damage Reverse Hair Serum ($60), which is a leave-in treatment for the hair,” says Abergel. “Then, I mixed the brand’s Hydrating Healing Hair Oil ($45) with the Correct Un-Frizz Hair Styling & Smoothing Cream ($44) to get a grunge vibe. You actually have to apply a lot more product than you think you do in order to get that undone, piecey finish.” After that, Abergel used a diffuser to enhance Stewart’s natural texture, explaining that it’s essential to allow the hair’s natural formations (like, say, a cowlick) to lead the way as you style. As the last step, Abergel focused on the micro bangs, making sure the choppy details were set to his liking.

Poised with her head tilted and Chanel lipstick in hand (Rouge Coco Flash Lip Colour in Moment, $48, in case you’re wondering), Stewart’s ethereal makeup looks as if it came courtesy of hazy, early morning sunlight, and not a host of products. Her blurry, diffused lips, in particular, are a point of fixation. “Use a soft, fluffy brush to build up the color of your lips in a gradual way, taking care to keep things gentle towards the lip line and more intense toward the center of the lip,” directs Lee. To make the lip line “melt away,” she recommends using a transparent loose powder on a clean brush to enhance the blur. To create darker iterations of the lip throughout the shoot, Lee used additional lip shades like Chanel’s beloved Rouge Coco Baumes ($45) in Chilling Pink, Keep Cool, and Cocoon.

For a gaze that looks almost bare but still dimensional, Lee used Chanel’s Stylo Ombre Et Contour in Contour Clair ($38) and Les Beiges Healthy Glow Natural Eyeshadow Palette in Cool ($72). Finishing touches included a handful of complexion staples like Chanel’s N°1 De Chanel Lip And Cheek Balms ($48), Les Beiges Healthy Winter Glow Blush ($72), and Les Beiges Healthy Winter Glow Primer ($54).

Hair is more than just hair. It can tell a story. And hairstylist Adir Abergel is a master at the craft. Some of the world's most famous faces have sat in his chair, including Jennifer Garner, Anne Hathaway, Charlize Theron, Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, and Kristen Stewart, who he has worked with since she was 15 (yes, during the Twilight days). Much of his talent and wizardry has been seen on the red carpet, especially at the Oscars, where he created hairstyles for around 20 Oscar-nominated women over his career.

Abergel is also the creative director for the biotech haircare brand Virtue Labs, where he helps with product development and innovation. Read on to learn about the evolution of his work with Stewart, his must-have styling product, and how he was able to create one of his client's favorite looks ever, even after his kit was lost while traveling. You and Stewart have done so many incredible red carpet moments together. Can you tell me about some of your all-time favorite moments or favorite looks?

It's funny because there are so many evolutions that I love. Twilight-time Kristen was all about her hair being long and beautiful, warm, chocolatey brown… kind of undone. At a time when everyone in Hollywood was doing Hollywood glamour, we were doing almost like this deconstructed, effortless… Kristen is from California, so there was just this easiness to the way that we used to do her hair, and it used to drive everyone crazy, because they were like, "Can you wash your hair?" And I was like, "No, I love celebrating this part of her." So I was obsessed with that era. Then, there was the era when we basically would go—and I'm not kidding you���take garden scissors and a razor and take out half the hair off her head, shave the sides off, bleach it out, and keep it completely punk and almost like early '60s Chelsea girl. Just really rebellious-feeling kind of hair. And then there was, of course, the complete shaving of the head. During this last tour, we sat down together and pulled all of these images of Nastassja Kinski where it was all of this beautiful, luxurious, thick-looking hair. I cut her hair into a bob, and it was one length, and all of her hair had grown out, and it wasn't chopped anymore. We took it into this beautiful strawberry off-blonde color. I would say there are these four quadrants that I've loved during those periods. So it's not a particular look, but it's a particular feel that I enjoyed creating with her.

I would love to talk about the fact that sometimes you have these moments that are super last minute, like cutting Saoirse [Ronan's] bangs the day of, and then in other times, there's planning ahead, and you have this idea that goes all the way to fruition. I'm wondering if you could tell me about a "happened right before walking out the door" moment that you love.

Okay, a moment that did not go as planned was when Jessica Biel and I were on a plane to Europe. We were all doing really well until we landed. … We needed to get from Heathrow to the hotel, and she had an hour and 20 minutes to get ready. My bags do not show up. No kit for this press tour. We get to the hotel, and I don't want to get her all riled up. So I'm thinking in my head, "Okay, dear. What can you do? What can you do? How is this gonna work?" So I literally told the publicist, "Did you bring any hair spray?" She was like, "I have hair spray." I was like, "Wonderful," then I asked the makeup artist, "Do you happen to have a round brush?" She was like, "I don't have a round brush, but I have a face brush." I was like, "Great. Give it to me." I called downstairs, and I was like, "Can you have a blow-dryer ready for me and some foil paper?" So they had foils from the kitchen. I said, "Can you also please have water for me and salt and a bottle of champagne?" I got to the room. I took the champagne, and I ended up using the champagne as a volumizer on the roots. I ended up using the salt with purifying water. I sprayed it everywhere to create texture in the hair. I then took the foils. I twisted them into sections. I wrap the hair around that. And then I use the blow-dryer to heat that. And at the end, she had the most beautiful curls you can imagine. We got it done perfectly, perfectly in time. And it's one of Jessica's favorite looks we've ever created.

Is there a product that is your go-to in styling for the red carpet?

Oh, straight up, I do not start hair without using volumizer on the roots. I created a volumizing spray called Volumizing Primer, and it was based off of 1950s/1960s setting lotion, but in a very modern way so it doesn't weigh down your hair. The problem is that we're all scared of putting a lot of product in our hair because we think that it's going to be too much. Well, with the volumizing primer, you have to use literally 25 pumps because it's incredibly lightweight. So [this is] what I would do if you have an issue with wanting to create more volume or even if you have volume but are trying to create memory: use it on your roots nonstop, saturate the roots, air-dry it, and then do your blowout. Air-dry, like almost 80%, and then use a round brush. And you're going to get memory, and that blowout is going to last for seven more days than you need to. You should probably wash your hair before that, but whatever. 

I'm thinking about someone like Kristen, and then someone like Nicole Kidman, and the two of them both have texture, but it's extremely different. Could you tell us a little bit about how you think about styling hair that is so different? What sort of key products or techniques get the desired effect?

The first part of hair that you really want to tackle is the health of it, and getting your hair healthy enough that there is enough elasticity and enough moisture in the hair. Because when you remove all of the moisture, and when you remove the elasticity and if you over bleach it too quickly, and you blow up that cuticle, or you haven't gotten your hair cut enough, what happens is that you end up not getting the most out of your hair. It's kind of like working out, right. If you work out, you're going to get the most out of your body. If you're going to eat healthy, you're going to get the most out of it. And I think that hair has not gotten the same love that we give to our face, we will wash our face, we will put a mask on it. We will use a NuFace or a ZIIP on it, we will go and get facials, but we rarely do that for our hair. And I really believe that we should treat our hair the same way that we treat our face. So that's where it starts. And then it's really approaching it in a way of understanding your hair and not always fighting it.

I feel like pretty much everyone has that moment, like the straight-haired girls want curly hair, the curly girls want straight hair. Just like love on your real texture.

Yes, and celebrate your real texture and then enhance it with the right things. If you have super curly hair like Nicole does, you tend to want to use hydrators first. So, things that are going to hydrate the hair, give it shine, and give it more elasticity and then you're going to want to use a blow dryer. The secret with blow drying is tugging on it, but it's not the heat. It's letting it cool down. The cooldown is when you get everything to kind of stay in there, create the shine, create the movement, create the bounce, create the reflection in the hair. That's incredibly important, flattening the cuticle and then letting the cuticle cool down before you take it out. Someone like Kristen, who has wavy hair, but tends to need a good foundation at her roots—it's all about building the right architecture, the right foundation. So it's about using a volumizer on her root, and creating some memory there. It lifts, it holds, and then the rest of your hair can dance.

If you've been following Kristen Stewart's press tour for the upcoming Princess Diana biopic, Spencer, you've definitely seen Tara Swennen's work.

The Los Angeles–based stylist has worked with Stewart for over 15 years and is responsible for her recent Met Gala look. Outside of her work with Stewart, Swennen's client roster includes Idina Menzel, Allison Janney, and Lana Condor just to name a few. Beyond red carpet looks and press tours, Swennen's work has been seen in publications such as Vogue, InStyle, and Teen Vogue. 

Not only is Swennen an incredible stylist, but she also strives to do good for the planet with her work by advocating for eco-friendly, ethical, and sustainable practices in fashion. In fact, Swennen was even awarded the first-ever Best Vegan Fashion Stylist award at Vegan Fashion Week in 2019.

How did you get clients in the beginning?

Most were word of mouth. People know you as an assistant when you have assisted for that long.

The designers know you. The showrooms know you. They put you forth for things. You start getting to know publicists. It's all about networking on your own these days. We're all with agents, but at the end of the day, so much of the work that comes to you is on your shoulders.

I was really good when I was young and could stay out into the wee hours of the morning, making sure I did just that. And then luckily, once you get a good enough roster, they just come.

Do you have a virtual pinboard? How do you keep everything on track so that you're not repeating yourself, so that you're not having something back-to-back… but are still tracking in a way that makes sense? Like if someone's gonna create a slideshow… how do you organize yourself?

I mean, that aspect is mental for me. I think it's part of our sickness as stylists. … I can't tell you what happened last week in the news, but I can tell you something that my client wore 10 years ago. So that is a great tool to have. ... That is something that's always just in my brain.

So you just keep that in your head?

Yeah, because the whole point is you want to keep creating fresh things. So you don't want to repeat yourself. You want to keep it fun. So that is something that I have in my head. But then, you know, as far as inspiration, it's constant. I grab stuff from Instagram. I grab stuff from Vogue.com, whatever it is. I'm a huge screenshotter. I think, as you and I both know, we were raised in between analog and digital, so for me, I'm very old school. I still rip the tears out of the magazines and have it all organized—because I'm a Virgo—in my attic. I mean, it's wild. So yes, the inspiration is pulled from everywhere.

I also want to ask about the Met Gala because I loved it so much. I felt like it was also playful in a way that just gave me so much joy. I want to talk about the glam piece of it, too, and how all of it comes together. I'm curious about that creative process, and the Met is the Met, so sometimes, it seems like it comes together really quickly for folks. Other times, it seems to be a long process. What was it like for you?

Well obviously, we get the theme pretty far out. And on this one, when I spoke to the Chanel team about it, I thought that it could be cool to go back into their Paris-Dallas collection, which happened I believe in 2014. So we took a look at some of those archive pieces, had some of those flown in. But in the end, we really, really loved the idea of the rockabilly vibe, especially for her.

Kristen has never been one to really wear the exuberant gown to the Met Ball. The past couple years, we've done pants. She's done cocktail. She's done a jumpsuit. So for me, it's nice, because I know that she's just going to go feeling her best in whatever she wants, but it doesn't need to bring all that drama. So we were able to figure out a fun concept that really fit her and her vibe, which was that. And of course, so much of it was dependent on the glam.

How does that work?

Well, you know, I had an idea. We fit prior, and we fell in love with that one outfit. Then it was, How do we make it into that? How do we elevate it to that whole vibe? I remember we were in Telluride driving to the airport. And we were just ideating. Adir is really, really great about the same thing, grabbing imagery. We all just talk about it, see what we're thinking. So that's how the process comes along. And it was one of those things where immediately it was like, "Let's do a high pony. Let's do the whole, you know, I don't even know what you call that in the front!" And that was how it evolved, and I thought it came quite beautifully.

There's nothing quite like an epic engagement announcement to break up the week. During a Tuesday appearance on SiriusXM's The Howard Stern Show, Kristen Stewart—who is currently doing press for her forthcoming Princess Diana biopic Spencer—told the radio host that she and her girlfriend of two years, screenwriter Dylan Meyer, were headed down the aisle, and we couldn't be more excited.

"We're marrying. We're totally gonna do it," Stewart said on the show, according to E!. "I wanted to be proposed to, so I think I very distinctly carved out what I wanted, and she nailed it. We're marrying; it's happening." 

Unfortunately for us, we haven't yet caught a glimpse of the couple's engagement rings. Though, it wouldn't surprise us if the brides-to-be said their "I dos" before we got the chance. (If you ask us, wedding dress and/or bridal suit sightings trump engagement rings.) After all, it's already been more than a year since Stewart told Stern that she thinks "good things happen fast" when talking about her relationship with Meyer on The Howard Stern Show in 2019. "When you know, you know. You know what I mean?" For all we know, the duo could be hitched by the end of the year.

Charlie's Angels is coming back, folks. As The Hollywood Reporter announced, Elizabeth Banks is directing a reboot of the iconic movie and TV franchise. Now the film has named its cast: Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott, and Ella Balinska are officially the new angels. They're taking over from Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore, and Lucy Liu, who famously starred in the 2000 movie, which was itself a reboot of the TV version from the '70s.

Of course, Stewart is already an A-lister, and Scott has nabbed major roles in Aladdin and Power Rangers, but we wouldn't blame you if Balinska's name doesn't ring any bells. "Angels will be a big break for Balinska, who has only appeared in two television episodes, one of them in the UK's long-running series Midsomer Murders, and the other an indie titled A Modern Tale," THR explains. Stalwarts of the festival have so far stuck to personal dress codes. Julianne Moore stepped out in yet another red dress—this time a hand-embroidered caped column gown by Givenchy Haute Couture that was finished with feathers. (Last year she wore another crimson feather-trimmed gown also made by Givenchy Couture.) Cate Blanchett—chair of this year's jury—recycled a Georgio Armani Privé black lace gown she first wore to the Golden Globes in 2014, where she won the Best Performance in a Moving Picture award for her role in Blue Jasmine.

Penelope Cruz has up to now stuck to classic black, wearing an array of black dresses that include a fishtail-backed midi that she accessorised with Atelier Swarovski jewels, and a dramatic lace number with frothy tulle detailing.

Meanwhile, Fan Bingbing has worn pouffy dresses fit for a princess, including a nude pink couture Ralph & Russo gown that was covered in a delicate layer of sparkle.

Chanel is on the move again. After showing past cruise collections in Havana and Seoul, Karl Lagerfeld has taken the show a bit closer to home to the Grand Palais in Paris. Of course, his muses all showed up to the event, including Kristen Stewart, Margot Robbie, and Lily-Rose Depp. (Bella and Gigi Hadid, meanwhile, were among the models who walked the runway.)

Kristen Stewart might be a Chanel girl, but her tweeds and pearls won't stop her from wearing her "scruffy" staples such as white T-shirts and distressed denim. At the Chanel Metiers D'Arts show in Hamburg this week, Kristen wore Chanel in her own way, pairing the white tweed cropped trousers and black silk blazer with a cropped white tank top and her signature silver stacked chain necklaces. Kristen is a pro at dressing up white tees, and her stylist Tara Swennen explained to me back in 2016 for an interview for The Telegraph exactly how she makes white T-shirts more "Kristen."

For a photocall at the Cannes Film Festival, K.Stew wore a tweed pencil skirt with a white Chanel T-shirt that the pair customised. "We cut it that morning," Swennen told me back in 2016. "I would easily say about seven or eight inches. It always makes me cringe a little bit, like is Karl going to come kill me at some point? But it's a T-shirt. It wasn't that bad. We had a sweater option, and it wasn't right with the weather, so we just decided to slash a shirt. It's very 'Kristen.'" It looks like Tara and Kristen are still up to their T-shirt–slashing antics, as her tee this week had a similar distressed look. I've done it. After lots of searching, plenty of air miles, and a few TSA headaches, I've found the perfect airport sneakers (and I'm never going back). While we've spent a lot of time mulling over what makes the ideal travel look—comfortable yet trendy, layered but not stuffy—discovering the ideal shoes was an accident. It turns out, my slip-on checkerboard vans, the shoes I'd recently adopted after a brief hiatus, were the perfect shoes for my jet-setting needs.

Earlier this month, I found myself pulling up to the airport in San Francisco, ready to head home to NYC after a quick wedding weekend. Having been forced to unforgivingly sit on my carry-on to make it close, I dragged it behind me, dreading the idea that I might be randomly selected by TSA for a full deep-dive into my vacation wardrobe.

As I went through the steps, winding my way through countless stanchions, I arrived at the metal detector and, in an exciting twist of events, I found myself easily sliding off my sneakers, tossing them into a bin, and quietly treading my way through the checkpoint. Slipping my shoes on once the whole ordeal had ended took all of 15 seconds, and I was on my way once again. Where my usual sneakers require sitting to tie them or simply gunning for the back-of-the-heel smoosh, slip-on sneakers proved to be the ideal choice for those of us in a hurry (and isn't that everyone at the airport?).

The Cannes Film Festival is now in full swing, meaning for the next two weeks, the arrivals hall at the Nice Côte d'Azur International Airport will be flooded with the biggest names in Hollywood. The red carpet is considered the most glamorous in the world, but unless you frequently attend galas on yachts, you won't be able to take any practical style tips from the sea of couture gowns.

However, the style parade arriving at the Nice airport is a different story. In fact, the place has turned into its own red carpet of sorts, as a pack of photographers are there for every incoming flight and A-listers are planning their Cannes arrival outfits as if it was a photocall, but this is actually where the likes of Bella Hadid, Jessica Chastain and Julianne Moore wear looks we can all copy. But like any sort of stylish get-together, there will be a few who want to surprise. Case in point for 2018? The annual CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund show was held in Los Angeles yesterday at the Chateau Marmont hotel and hosted by Kate Spade New York’s Deborah Lloyd, Mark Holgate, Lisa Love, and Emma Stone. The event sees 10 emerging designers hand their collections over to the Vogue team to present them to an A-list crowd, including Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Nicole Richie. Following the presentation, the crowd is treated to an L.A.-style tea party to relax and mingle. J.Crew’s Jenna Lyons told Vogue “I think all of the designers are relaxed because they’ve submitted their clothes and someone else is putting them together.”

Supporting emerging talent in the fashion industry is important—it encourages creativity and brings a breath of fresh air to the American fashion industry. Next month, the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund finalist will be announced, and will take home a prize of almost $500,000. Not a bad sum for an emerging designer. Past winners have included Alexander Wang, Proenza Schouler, and Rodarte, so you can be sure that whoever wins, will become a household name.

"Bella wore her engagement ring at the beginning of Breaking Dawn prior to her wedding to Edward Cullen," Prop Store Auction explains of the ring the character received in The Twilight Saga: Eclipse.
