She was recently photographed on vacation with her family in the Italian city, where she wore a laid-back outfit ideal for sightseeing. She wore a Drake's 1977 Cotton Twill Baseball Cap ($115) with a basic crewneck T-shirt, a black cardigan, baggy wide-leg jeans, and a canvas tote bag.

Her whole outfit is cool, but her velvet Mary Jane flats are perfect for her Italian excursion. Why? Because Venice is renowned for its Venetian slippers. One of my favorite spectator events of summer is here: Paris Haute Couture Week. Tons of the most well-dressed celebrities attend the biannual event, and you're sure to spot them wearing the latest trends and It items. This season, Keira Knightley just made an appearance and was photographed wearing an outfit that was the ideal blend of current summer trends and fall basics. (I hear it was an unseasonably chilly day in Paris.)

While the top half of Knightley's outfit was giving fall, the bottom half featured the summer jeans-and-shoe combination I keep seeing elegant dressers wear. It's one that's a bit fun but also entirely elegant: white jeans and charm-embellished flats. The trend of adorning basic flats with charms actually first became a thing last summer, when Chanel debuted its wildly popular Mary Janes with playful gold charms along the straps (the ones Knightley happens to be wearing), and now, plenty of other brands have followed suit. Thin hair may be low maintenance in some aspects (it requires little time to blow-dry and your salon appointments will be kept short), but it’s notoriously one of the most difficult hair types to style. Your main goal is probably all about adding lift, volume, and movement in order to create the illusion of thicker hair, but it takes more than a little effort to maintain shape and prevent roots from falling flat.

Of course, as with any hair type, getting the right haircut for thin hair sets the best foundation for finding a foolproof hairstyle. So what kinds of cuts should thin hair types request from the hairdresser? "Shorter styles adding textured layers for lots of movement can help the hair to look thicker and give body,” advises hairstylist and content creator Holly Carr. "And mid-length styles with soft face shaping are great for adding soft waves and still being able to put up. If you have long hair then Carr recommends keeping the weight in the ends. "Blunt cuts can help to keep the ends looking thicker and healthier for longer.”

When it comes to styling, Carr recommends creating waves or curls to add fullness. "You can curl the hair underneath or bring just a couple of pieces around the ears forwards toward the face,” she says. "This creates the illusion of thicker hair around the neck and face.” And for those who prefer up-dos? "Textured hair ups are also great,” she adds. "Try lifting the hair at the crown for volume and at the sides for width while any loose pieces add detail.”

So if you thought that having thin hair meant you didn’t have options, think again. With the right styling techniques and products, you’ll have hair that appears thick and voluminous in no time. Here are some of our favourite low maintenance hairstyles for thin hair.

1. Tucked Back Waves

By tucking hair behind her ears, model Karlie Kloss employs the subtle trick of keeping hair in one place to make it appear thicker.

2. Flicky Blowdry

The '90s style flicky blowdry is an effortless way to volumise thin hair. Use a round brush or your straighteners to shape hair inwards.

3. Half-Up Half-Down

Rihanna's hair looks extra voluminous when styled half-up half-down. Add a volumising mist (or in a pinch, dry shampoo) to the lengths for an extra volume boost.

4. Alternated Curls

Carr recommends curling hair in alternate directions to add volume and shape through the lengths of thin hair. It's a technique that Victoria Beckham gets right every single time.

5. Voluminous Waves

Adding volume to the roots (with some subtle backcombing) and to the ends (wide barrel tongs work best) makes hair look thicker by creating height and fullness.

6. Soft Waves

Soft, mismatched waves are a great way to add movement and dimension. Hide thin ends by curling hair from the bottom up.

7. Fluffy Fringe

Don't be afraid to experiment with a fringe even if you have thin hair. A soft, fluffy effect works best.

8. Structured Bob

Shaping hair into sculpted waves both helps to lift and emphasise the angles of your face and creates the appearance of lifted, more buoyant hair.

9. Wavy Chignon

Thin hair in an up-do doesn't have to look flat - case in point above. Curl or wave your hair before styling the up-do in order to create texture from the roots.

10. Layered Fringe

While Carr advises against a super layered look (this will thin hair out even further), a few short face-framing layers from the fringe is a great way to add shape to thin hair.

11. Bubble Ponytail

The on-trend bubble ponytail is a fun option for thin hair since it adds shape and structure throughout the lengths.

12. Angled Cut

An angled cut with longer strands towards the front adds movement and creates the illusion of more hair. Style with loose curls, like Keira Knightley, to add additional oomph.

13. Ribbon Up-Do

Not only does a ribbon distract from thin hair by adding additional movement to the lengths of your ponytail, but it's also incredibly on trend.

Straight hair doesn't need to lack volume or shape. A little lift at the roots paired with waved out ends (create them with your straighteners) makes the overall effect seem fuller.

Flipping hair into an extreme side-part is the oldest trick in the book for adding instant volume. To maintain lift, backcomb roots before flipping, then lightly brush over the top for a sleek finish.

Take a cue from Rachel Nguyen and twist a scrunchie into your bun to make it look thicker. Not to mention, it requires minimal effort.

23. Messy Up-Do

Proving that a messy up-do will literally never go out of fashion, Gigi Hadid's 'off-duty model' hairstyle ticks all of the boxes. Fluffy ends? Check. Face-framing strands? Check. Volume at roots? Check.

Zendaya's bouffant ponytail is a lesson in disguising thin hair. Combining a deep side-part with lifted roots and curly lengths, it's classic and modern all at once.

If your thin hair doesn't quite make it into a satisfying bun or ponytail, one way to hide thin ends is to twist them into an elegant up-do. All you'll need is bobby pins. Gently tease out a few strands from the roots to add extra texture.

32. Blunt Bob

A blunt bob may require regular upkeep, but it does help to prevent wispy ends, a tell-tale sign of thin hair. Lucy Boynton styles hers with loose alternated waves for added volume.

33. Beachy Waves

Beachy waves are a classic way to add volume and texture to long thin hair since they create the appearance of movement. If your hair doesn't naturally hold a curl, a salt spray will give a welcome helping hand.

34. Choppy Bob

Loose waves are a hairstylist's favourite trick for adding volume. By creating body and movement they prevent hair from falling flat around the face.

35. Micro-Bob With Fringe

The shorter the length, the less weight there is to weigh hair down, so the good thing about fine hair is you can keep your bob tousled and fluffy a la Taylor LaShae.

36. Curly Ponytail

One way to avoid the dreaded thin ponytail? Curl the lengths of your hair once it's up to elevate your ponytail with extra body. To make sure it lasts, add further volume and texture with a thickening spray.

It is a truth universally acknowledged, that Jane Austen and the heroines she's created are among the coolest ladies in literary history. That's how I feel, anyway. Like many people around the world, I love Jane Austen. At age 11, I became consumed with Pride and Prejudice and read it most nights (sometimes by candlelight), and I haven't looked back since. I was and am obsessed. I watched every adaptation I could get my hands on. I kept a copy of Captain Wentworth's love letter in the Notes app of my mobile phone. Feeling like a Jane Bennett myself, I spent much of my teen years walking around the house in long white cotton nightgowns with lavender in my hair, and, well, I still do. Committed? Absolutely.

The pastel- and muslin-filled world of the Jane Austen adaptations that I still watch on repeat (and plan to for the rest of my life) was brought to life by women I now worship. Brilliant costume designers like Jenny Beaven, Ruth Myers and Jacqueline Durran who worked on Sense and Sensibility, Emma and Pride and Prejudice, respectively, imbued Austen's characters with the historical likeness of Regency-period England as well as a timeless elegance that makes them and their style eternally beloved.

More recently, I was floored by Alexandra Byrne's sumptuous costumes in Autumn de Wilde's hilarious adaptation of Emma, which I strongly recommend for at-home viewing. Thanks to them, one of my biggest dreams is to don an empire-waist gown and white gloves and attend a ball.

Austen's world is a frilly dream. In a society where bachelors compete for the largest barouche, fans are used to shield private conversations and the best place to fall in love is on the dance floor, of course, the style is camp in the most frou-frou way. Think of the heavy use of organza and the endless streams of ribbons and pearls. A dream!

Organza and thin muslin cotton were used as sheer layers during the Regency period to subtly work around the sleeve-length rules. Having semi-opaque sleeves and details were also considered the peak of fancy fashion. Billie Piper as Fanny Price layered organza under cotton dresses throughout Mansfield Park, while Keira Knightley as Lizzie Bennet wore a sheer organza layer over her white dress to the Netherfield Ball.

Lucky for us, brands like Maison Cléo, Aurore Van Milhelm and Cecilie Bahnsen brought back organza dresses and blouses in a major way. Now quite ubiquitous, organza is best left on its own as a statement piece with simple accessories.

STRAW BUCKET HATS

Straw bucket- and bonnet-style hats à la Carey Mulligan as Isabella Thorpe and Felicity Jones as Catherine Morland in Northanger Abbey were a must in Regency England. On the set of the 2020 adaptation of Emma, nearly 60 unique bonnets were created for the film.

More recently, straw hats have made a comeback in the nostalgic cool style that evokes '90s summertime by the beach. I love my straw hat, which I found in a charity shop and consider it a summer staple. From flowy dresses to tees and shorts, I wear it with any and everything.

PEARLS, PEARLS, PEARLS

In the 2005 adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, Lizzie Bennet iconically dons pearl earrings with pearls in her hair too as she dances with Mr Darcy for the first time. I remember thinking this was so cool. Please also note Rosamund Pike as Jane (left above) wearing the aforementioned lavender in her hair.

In 2020, pearls have maintained the cult status they reached last year. I find myself just wearing more and more of them all at once. Baroque-style pearls, which look less traditional than classic pearls, are my favourite, along with any Shrimps or Simone Rocha pearl accessory.

Puff-sleeve dresses, mostly short-sleeved versions, are common throughout all Austen adaptations, be it at Emma's picnic lunch or sewing in the drawing room. In writing this, I discovered that long sleeves were only just becoming widely popular at this time.

In the last year, we (the fashion people and I) have become truly obsessed with puff-sleeve dresses and tops. The updated silhouette pouffes out more in the body and comes up midi, but many maintain that Austen-style wrap. They're flattering on everyone and make a statement without getting in the way. If I could have a wardrobe of them in every pastel colour available, I would.

Linen was a popular fabric during the Regency period because like muslin, it was cheaper than silks. It wore well through damp winters and was worn commonly as an empire-waist dress, as well as long jackets and smocks.

Linen is gaining popularity this year because it's a sustainable choice. Linen "is super low-impact and is an inherently more sustainable fibre because it doesn't grow on fertile soil; it doesn't need pesticides because it's a hardy crop; it doesn't need to be irrigated and you can blend it," according to our report on sustainable fabrics. I find it also just feels divine and breathes gorgeously on a hot summer day.

DAINTY FLORALS

It wasn't all delicate white muslin in Austen's time. With England on the verge of the Industrial Revolution, intricate patterns and prints began to become more widely used and delicate florals became the favourite because the patterns didn't need to match up on the seams.

From the prairie-dress trend to the vintage Laura Ashley dress obsession, it looks like everyone is craving dainty floral dresses in a major way. And it has my full support, as it's perfect for floating around in warm weather.

RIBBONS AND BOWS

Wearing ribbons, ribbon shopping, sewing ribbons onto clothes… lots of Austen life revolved around ribbons. Choker necklaces were extremely popular in post–Revolution France and quickly made their way to Regency tearooms. Ladies would thread a satin ribbon through a large pendant, like a cameo, and tie it around their neck.

Now, ribbons and bows have maintained their popularity as pretty accessories to top any look. Whether you wear them in your hair, around your neck or tied on a basket bag, they're a lovely summer accent.

One of the ways in which we can all make a difference with our wardrobes is to buy a few longlasting things, rather than seeing trends and items as disposable. While watching the royal wedding coverage this morning, I spotted three guests in the crowd wearing the same dress.
