I go on about this a lot, but nothing gets me down more than the fact that my hair is lifeless and lacking texture. I can spend up to two hours tonging it and misting it with several different sprays and still not manage to achieve the effortlessly tousled look I so crave. At the end of the whole ordeal, I’m left with one of two hair looks: matted, flat and greasy as a result of the excess product in there or a Dolly Parton–esque bouffant. 

If you ask me, achieving beachy lengths that look effortless is one of my hardest beauty feats. And while I’m still eagerly anticipating my post-lockdown haircut, it’s safe to say that I am looking for all of the tips to style out my rather ridiculously long hair right now. Luckily for me, I recently got the chance to sit down with Laura Polko, T3 ambassador and hairstylist to the likes of Gigi Hadid, Kate Bosworth, Lea Michele, Lucy Hale and Martha Hunt, to discover exactly how to achieve effortlessly tousled hair. This is what she had to say…

Dry Shampoo Makes All the Difference

It turns out a huge problem that so many of us face is that we’re repeatedly opting for the wrong styling products. "I see so many people using too much spray. When you use too much texture spray, it can make the hair look matted,” she warns. The answer? Steer clear of sticky texturising sprays and instead opt for targeted dry shampoo application. "Just take a small amount of dry shampoo to the crown. Spray it, and then shake it all out. It’s the best way to get that undone look.”

Invest in Your Tools

A key point that Polko is keen to drill home is that relying on product to style your hair just isn’t enough and usually won’t work. "It’s all in the tool,” she says. It would seem that there are lots of things many of us don’t consider when shopping for hair tools that can totally make or break the end result. "A hair tool that reheats itself often will make things a lot easier. It means that you don’t have to go back over things or end up with one half that looks dramatically different from the other.”

The other thing to keep an eye on? The lengths of the plates. "So many people struggle to curl their hair with straighteners, but the key is finding a pair that uses longer plates so that the hair doesn’t fall out,” she says. But if you still can’t nail it, there are other things you can try. The ultimate undone, natural-looking style, according to Polko, is flat-iron waves. "It’s not a look that comes across as overly styled. The key is, though, to always open up the face. Always bend up first. Otherwise, you get unnatural volume where you really don’t want it.”

Face Framing Is a Thing

Speaking of opening up the face, Polko suggests that this isn’t something that needs to take time or be a laborious task. In fact, it can be super quick and easy. "It’s called face framing. You don’t have to do anything with the hair except for one really subtle wave just where the eye is. This is where your hair would naturally tuck beside your ear,” she advises. If this seems weird at first, just try it and see the difference it makes. "The minute you add that, it makes everything look really natural. It’s subtle, but it really opens up the whole face.”

Never Forget the Ends

Here’s one that I can definitely take note of. When styling your own hair, it can be tempting to put all of your effort and attention into the middle section, where the eye is naturally drawn to. However, Polko warns that neglecting the ends can totally make or break your ’do. "You have got to pay attention to the ends. It’s the key to natural-looking tousled hair,” she says.

With the ends being the most fragile part of our strands, it makes sense that we are often reluctant to inflict heat upon them. However, making sure you use a hardworking heat protector first should do the job at protecting them. "If your hair is long, the key is to make sure the ends all go in different directions. If it’s short, curl them under a little bit. Naturally, the ends would all be doing a different thing,” says Polko.

I love it when a story idea suddenly comes to me while I'm working on another article. This time around, I was finishing my story about Blue Crush bikini trends that are still relevant in 2020—yes, that's really part of my job—and I wanted to include swimsuits similar to Kate Bosworth's boy shorts in the movie. To keep everything even, she relies on her "hero" brush (aka the below number by Charlotte Tilbury) to get every last millimeter of her complexion and, yes, her ears.

6. She Never Leaves the House Without Concealer

Bobbi Brown's Skin Foundation Stick ($47), in particular (which, by the way, she only ever applies with her fingers). 

"It’s just one of those products that’s always in my makeup kit or in my purse,” she explains. "It’s just an easy way to touch up the skin and has a really creamy and hydrating consistency.”

7. She Uses Blush and Eye Shadow Interchangeably

Bosworth shares that she has a knack for multipurposing her favorite makeup products and uses a pretty taupe-y hue from YSL to add a creamy wash of color and contour to her lids and cheekbones alike. Sadly, we couldn't find the exact product Bosworth reached for in this tutorial (it's no longer carried!), but we found a similar shade in the brand's Couture Blush. 

8. She Knows What Works (and What Doesn't) for Her Eye Color

"I don’t use a lot of blacks around my eyes because when I do, it makes them look smaller," says Bosworth. "Whereas warmer brown or burgundy or pink tones are much more complementary to my eye color." She loves the shade Disaster Class from Glossier, which reminds her of a luxe pour of Bordeaux.

9. She (Like the Rest of the Human Population) Really Stans Boy Brow

At this point, we're pretty sure the entire celebrity and makeup artist universe hoard Glossier's top-selling product, and Boy Brow ($16) also happens to be Bosworth's not-so-secret secret to her perfectly groomed arches, which, yes, are crucial for a well-framed and youthful-looking face. 

10. She Likes to "Finger-Paint" Her Blush (Even If It's Powder)

After first applying her favorite blushes (Nars is a favorite brand), with a brush, she's not afraid to get her fingers dirty as well. 

"I always kind of get my fingers in there with blush just to kind of meld it in,” she admits. "Even if it’s a powder.” 

11. She Has a Specific Dab-and-Bleed Lipstick Application Technique

Bosworth is not shy about loving a bold lip look—be it a darker stain of color or a bright, juicy pop. That said, she has a very specific application method. First, she dabs (in kind of delicate stabbing motion) the tube to her lips, and then uses her fingers to spread and push the product into her lips while she pouts to create that perfect ratio of color and stain to create her signature "just-bitten" look. She's a fan (as are beauty editors) of Rituel de Fille's pretty line of nontoxic lippies. 

12. She Wears Light Pink Lipstick Alone and Over Other Colors

"This tint has a tiny tiny bit of pink, which kind of naturally draws out the color in your lips, and I wear this alone A LOT, but I also like to add it on top of my other favorite lip colors," Bosworth shares.

13. She Applies Aquaphor to Her Lashes and Brows

In a pinch (aka when she's without her usual stash of makeup products), Bosworth shares she'll abide by an old trick leaked to her by a makeup artist and use a creamy balm like Aquaphor to coat her lashes and brows. In the absence of a mascara or brow pen, the formula helps thicken up the hairs, lending a fluttering and full texture. (She uses clean fingertips for her lashes and a clean toothbrush for her brows.)

14. She Doesn't Neglect Her Skincare Routine When She Travels

While in the beautiful (and steamy!) St. Lucia, Bosworth took some time to share her go-to skincare routine when she travels. In terms of anti-aging, consistency is key, and Bosworth shares that she relies on the below skin staples to keep her skin on good behavior even amid differing climates and weather forecasts.

15. She Has Not One But 3 Favorite Sunscreens

Bosworth knows that youthful skin and stringent sunscreen application go hand in hand. So, not all that surprisingly, she has a very specific three-piece repertoire of formulas she keeps on hand at all times—especially when she's traveling. Her favorites are below!

16. She Knows About the One Bronzer Every A-Lister Is Obsessed With

None other than Chanel's Soleil Tan de Chanel ($50)—the creamy, ultra-blendable bronzer that practically every celebrity and makeup artist uses and swears by for creating the most flattering and believable of glows. 

"It’s such a great natural-looking bronze, and I’ve probably been using it since it came out," Bosworth gushes. "It’s the hero product in so many girls’ bags. This is the only product I really use a brush for, and it will mix really nicely with all the other products you’re wearing."

17. She Takes Fitness (Very) Seriously

Take a glance at her "Fitness" highlight reel on Instagram, and you'll see that Bosworth takes her workout regimen extremely seriously. She prioritizes sessions with her trainer Steph Watson and will even get herself to the gym post-flight. (Respect.)

18. She Loves LED Therapy

Check out Bosworth's "Beauty" highlights on Instagram, and you'll see tons of non-sponsored posts about the LED treatments from LightStim, which she largely credits for helping to maintain the integrity of her skin. (She has her own hand-held device for home and also goes for in-office sessions.) 

"This is me getting game-face ready for fashion week," the actress captions one snapshot on Instagram. "I often get asked about skin and LightStim has been a HUGE part of maintaining the integrity—in my opinion—the best in LED therapy hands down. Ask me which celebrities I follow for skincare inspiration and I can give you a list as long as my arm. From Victoria Beckham to Jennifer Lopez, my Instagram saved folders look like something of an encyclopedia on the skincare routines and complexion recommendations of the A-list. But when it comes to makeup, my celebrity inspo folder is more finely edited. Instead, I prefer to go direct to the makeup artists themselves for tips and tricks, with industry experts like Pati Dubroff and Patrick Ta often taking to Instagram to share the exact products that they've used on a celebrity for a red carpet beauty look.

But there is one major exception: Kate Bosworth. Yes, not only is she the star of everyone's favourite early noughties surf film, Blue Crush, and friend to another of my beauty icons Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, but Bosworth's Instagram is also a treasure trove of truly amazing makeup advice—with her IGTVs covering everything from Italian-inspired beauty looks to what to do when you've forgotten your makeup bag.

Ahead, I've rounded up six of the most useful makeup tips that I've learned from Kate Bosworth herself plus her favourite products to shop alongside them. Keep scrolling…

#1: Opt for a moisturising foundation

"One of the things that I”m really passionate about is the integrity of skin," Kate revealed in her "Italian Romance"–inspired" makeup tutorial for IGTV. "I'm a real excavator of the perfect foundation, and one of the foundations that I really love to use—especially in my day to day—is this one from Koh Gen Do (£72). It's a moisture foundation, and for me, the foundations that work the best are the ones that do have moisture and have some hydrating elements to them. If the foundation is too dry, then I just feel like you see all the cracks and the creases in my skin and it's just not the look I'm going for."

#2: Mix concealer with moisturiser for a foundation alternative

Whether you've forgotten your makeup bag while you're on your travels (like Kate did during a recent trip to Australia) or you're looking for an alternative to foundation, Bosworth suggests mixing your favourite concealer with a moisturiser.

"For everyday looks, concealers can go a long way—especially if you spread them around to create a foundation-like consistency," she explained. "I'm going to use some moisturiser to expand the concealers that I have. We're going to add some moisturiser to make these products stretch a little bit further than they normally would."

Kate mixes her favourite Clé de Peau Beauté Concealer (£54) with the moisturiser that she's "obsessed with"—Augustinus Bader The Rich Cream (£205)—to create a lightweight base that looks natural and dewy.

#3: Your fingers are often the best makeup tools

Rather than fussing with multiple makeup brushes and sponges, Kate is a real advocate for using her fingers to apply her products. "I use my fingers quite a bit to apply makeup," Bosworth revealed in a makeup tutorial with Rosie Huntington-Whiteley. "There's something about the skin-on-skin… and even brushes sometimes can intimidate me slightly."

For best results, stick to cream and liquid products like Kate's favourite Glossier Lidstar Eye Shadow (£15), as powders tend to work best when applied with a brush.

#4: Toothbrush + lip balm = ultimate brow combo

Turns out, you don't need a whole stash of brow pencils, spoolies and pomade to create fuller-looking brows. When Kate found herself without her favourite brow pen, she used a trick that she learned backstage.

"So one trick that a makeup artist told me quite a while ago which I use when I'm in a pinch is to take a little bit of balm and bring a little bit of it to my lashes and my eyebrows to thicken," Kate explained.

"I’m going to use this toothbrush to apply the balm to my brows. I’m just going to brush it into the toothbrush and then apply it to the brow. It actually looks really good and pretty full."

#5: Blusher makes a great eye shadow

Kate is a real fan of multipurpose beauty products (she swears by the Clinique Chubby Sticks) and can often be seen wearing a blusher as an eye shadow. 

"I use blush interchangeably as eye shadow all the time," Bosworth explained in a recent tutorial.

#6: Skip the lip liner and layer lipsticks instead

Like me, Kate Bosworth isn't a huge fan of lip liner, telling Rosie HW that she likes it on other people but not on herself. "I don't love my mouth with a lip pencil, I normally use the edge of the lipstick for a little distinction," she explains.

Instead, she layers lipsticks to create a fuller-looking pout with a subtle ombré effect. "I sometimes put the lipstick that's a little bit brighter on the top of where the base is. It just lifts it, I think," Bosworth revealed.

We've officially reached that point in the season when we've exhausted our summer outfit ideas but can't begin dressing for fall completely yet. (It's still hot AF out.) It's a specific kind of outfit quandary, but Kate Bosworth might have the solution. While running errands in NYC, the actress opted for an outfit that feels perfect to make that summer-to-fall transition. She wore a light maxi dress with a shoe trend that's poised to be huge for fall: classic, retro sneakers. (Hers are from Reebok.)

Rejoice: Sandal season has arrived! Kate Bosworth just stepped out on the Met Gala red carpet in a look that we’re sure no one will forget anytime soon. Only a matter of hours separates you from the Met Gala red carpet, one of the most over-the-top fashion spectacles of the year. We have a feeling this will be another green dress that will be almost impossible to get a hold of.
