Having spent a more than fair amount of time scouring new-in sections, I've noticed a particular summer-ready trend land online in droves in recent weeks. Thin hair may be low maintenance in some aspects (it requires little time to blow-dry and your salon appointments will be kept short), but it’s notoriously one of the most difficult hair types to style. Your main goal is probably all about adding lift, volume, and movement in order to create the illusion of thicker hair, but it takes more than a little effort to maintain shape and prevent roots from falling flat.

Of course, as with any hair type, getting the right haircut for thin hair sets the best foundation for finding a foolproof hairstyle. So what kinds of cuts should thin hair types request from the hairdresser? "Shorter styles adding textured layers for lots of movement can help the hair to look thicker and give body,” advises hairstylist and content creator Holly Carr. "And mid-length styles with soft face shaping are great for adding soft waves and still being able to put up. If you have long hair then Carr recommends keeping the weight in the ends. "Blunt cuts can help to keep the ends looking thicker and healthier for longer.”

When it comes to styling, Carr recommends creating waves or curls to add fullness. "You can curl the hair underneath or bring just a couple of pieces around the ears forwards toward the face,” she says. "This creates the illusion of thicker hair around the neck and face.” And for those who prefer up-dos? "Textured hair ups are also great,” she adds. "Try lifting the hair at the crown for volume and at the sides for width while any loose pieces add detail.”

Celebrity colorist, Jenny Perry, has always known she wanted to be a hairdresser. 

As a kid, Perry would accompany her nana and aunt to their local salons and fell in love with the community that was built there.

Now, Perry owns her own salon, Jenna Perry Hair, where she developed her signature approach to color. 

Perry's client list is stacked. From Emily Ratajkowski to Bella Hadid, Perry has made a name for herself with her effortless techniques to achieve the ultimate "Hot Girl Hair" look. 

For the latest episode of Who What Wear With Hillary Kerr, Perry shares how she went from Rhode Island to mastering the art of balayage.

You grew up in Newport, Rhode Island. Can you tell me a little bit about your earliest memories of hair?

I was a gymnast and a dancer—a ballerina. My mom would do my hair in a gymnastics ponytail or ballet bun. I was incredibly close to my dad's mother—my nana—and my aunt. They were beauty girls, like Italian, spent lots of time in the salon.

I would always go to the hair salon with my aunt, who had such a great relationship with her stylist. I just fell in love with the community and just being a part of that world. It was so inspiring to me at such a young age. 

You end up going to hair school right after high school. Can you tell me a little bit about what that education piece of it was like?

I really knew in my gut that I wanted to be a hairdresser. Luckily, my parents were like, "Okay, you can always go to college down the road."

Right after high school, I took a month off and I went to Paul Mitchell. I grew up on an island in Rhode Island, so leaving and crossing the bridge to go to hair school was such a big deal for like a small town girl.

I met so many different people. Some people were older and every walk of life was going to cosmetology school. I just remember loving every second of the education. The hardest part for me was being a lefty, because there aren't many lefties in the world. I had to learn everything backwards or in a different way.

How is editorial different than being in the salon with clients?

I was doing that for maybe four or five years in my career. It was really incredible to see a final image. For me, it wasn't fast paced enough. I loved talking to people and making them feel great about themselves. In that world, you're doing that, but it wasn't enough for me.

I really loved being in the salon behind the chair.

At what point did you start to really realize that color was your specialty?

Now that I think back at it, I was always more excited about color than I was cutting.

When I moved to ION Studio, I built the confidence to actually get to the big girls salon. I walked in and the three guys that owned it were so lovely and inviting. I kind of was like, "I know what I'm doing, but I'm not as good as these people but let's give it a try."

Once I was there, I was working with some of the best colorists ever. I learned a lot from taking the classes that they were giving the assistants and I learned from watching and just practicing. From there was when I developed my love for balayage—the hair coloring that I do now. That was it for me.

Though Kim Kardashian certainly took home the trophy for best naked dress at the Met Gala this year—showing up in Marilyn Monroe's Jean Louis dress from John F. Kennedy's 45th birthday party guaranteed her that title—a handful of other attendees are still vying for a similar but not entirely identical accolade. That is, the one for the best next-to-naked look. And trust me—it's a close race. 

Even from the very beginning of the Met Gala red carpet, we could see that all-black, all-lace looks would be one of if not *the* top trend of the night, with Vanessa Hudgens, who co-hosted Vogue's livestream, arriving early in a gothic getup by Moschino. From there, we spotted Maude Apatow in Miu Miu, Karlie Kloss in Givenchy, and Phoebe Dynevor in Louis Vuitton, all wearing similarly sheer, black ensembles for the evening's event. Update, April 16: About a month after giving birth, Karlie Kloss has revealed the name of her baby boy: Levi Joseph. Kloss and her husband welcomed their first child on March 11, 2021, and first announced their pregnancy news last fall. Kloss wore an Alison Lou ring in her baby name reveal post and it's already going viral on Instagram, raking up over 100,000 likes and counting. Congratulations to the new family of three! 

Originally posted on October 29, 2020: Am I sensing a theme here? In 2020, we've had a lot of model pregnancies, including Gigi Hadid, Emily Ratajkowski, Hannah Bronfman, and Elsa Hosk. Now you can add another A-lister to the group: Karlie Kloss. People reports that the model and Kode With Klossy founder is expecting her first child with husband Joshua Kushner. Congratulations to the soon-to-be family of three!

As you might remember, Kloss got married in October 2018 and wore a beautiful Dior gown with sheer lace sleeves. They might have only just ended, but the 2010s were riddled with beauty trends you have probably already forgotten (even if your Facebook memories try their hardest not to let you). Beauty has always been a means of self-expression, but thanks to social media, it became even more of a space to make a statement, large or small. Platforms like Instagram and Pinterest became a go-to source to discover new ideas, reveal new haircuts, swap recommendations, and share opinions on the latest looks, for better or worse. Thanks to this newfound democratization of trends, beauty also became increasingly more inclusive, with many brands embracing people of color and different body types, as well as genderless products.

Of course, celebrities were at the forefront of many 2010s trends, including one famous family in particular. Love them or hate them, there’s no denying the Kardashian-Jenners’ (often controversial) contributions to the industry. (We named Kim one of the 21 women who defined style in the decade for a reason.) You’ll see them pop up several times in this list, along with other influential names like Rihanna and Cara Delevingne. 

So as we set our sights on new 2020 looks to conquer, it’s officially time to pause and remember some of the best—and best-to-forget—looks, products, and techniques that took over the previous decade. Some might be long gone (we hardly knew ye, strobing), but others, like clean beauty, have surpassed "trend” to become movements that we’ll continue to see in the industry for years to come.

Celebs have been putting their names on fragrances for decades, but in the 2010s, the branding bubble exploded. Kylie Cosmetics made Kylie Jenner a billionaire, while Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty became a best seller at Sephora, largely thanks to the brand’s inclusive and extensive shade ranges.

2. Contouring

The concept of using makeup to exaggerate and visually sharpen the angles on one’s face using different shades of makeup, contouring skyrocketed in popularity thanks, again, to Kim Kardashian West, who shared her technique on Instagram.

3. Strobing

The shiny stepsister to contouring, strobing involved piling on the highlighter to play up the cheekbones, as Gigi Hadid demonstrated at a 2015 event.

Every time the calendar flips to November, you start seeing droves of Ugg boots out on the streets. (Yes, even on celebrities like Rihanna, Gigi Hadid, Sienna Miller, and Sofía Vergara.) While it seems like nine out of 10 people gravitate toward Ugg's classic shearling-lined boots, Karlie Kloss just proved that the cult brand makes a very different style that's a more-than-worthy addition to your boot collection.

I've already discussed the fall trends I'm wearing as a 5'10" fashion editor, but in case you'd like a tall celebrity's point of view, I've got you covered there too. Celebrities often get a bad rap for being unrelatable, but there are plenty of ways you can identify with them if you pay close enough attention. Case in point: Celebrities over 5'8" often wear wardrobe basics that all tall girls rely on time and time again. 

For instance, Serena Williams (5'9") and Blake Lively (5'10") are both on the same page about which fall jacket trend to try, while Nicole Kidman (5'10") and Karlie Kloss (6'2") are in agreement over the practical yet chic shoes that don't add unneeded height. If you've got it, flaunt it. Long legs are a major perk of being tall, and celebrities like 5'10" Zendaya and 5'9" Gywneth Paltrow know how to take full advantage.

Some may literally have the world at their feet, but all of them are as keen on wearing the same shoes from the same designer as the next.

What do Aimee Song, Meghan Markle, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Victoria Beckham, and Rihanna all have in common? Well, quite a few things actually. They’re all some of the most talked about names in their respective spheres (influencer, royal, model, designer, singer—you know, the usual), and when it comes to fashion, they all have the world at their feet. It’s worth noting that I chose that expression because in the case of today’s story, it takes on meaning both figuratively and literally.

The Calvin Klein F/W 18 presentation in New York City yesterday had a star-studded front row, including stars like Nicole Kidman, Margot Robbie, Paris Jackson, and supermodel Cindy Crawford. Among the big names were also Millie Bobby Brown and Karlie Kloss, who both wore the same cropped leather biker jacket by Calvin Klein—a matching moment that may be the cutest we've seen to date.

Each brought their own distinct styling to the table. Kloss teamed her jacket with elegant black pants, a classic white tee, and white pumps while Brown wore the piece with a velvet Calvin Klein by Appointment skirt over a white turtleneck, grounding the look with white pumps—an outfit that can best be summed up as varsity-chic.

Kloss later took to Instagram to document the cute matching moment, posting two photos of herself with the Stranger Things star. Of course, the duo looked great in their matching leather jackets, but Kloss made it all the sweeter in her Instagram caption, admitting this was the first time she'd met her "crush irl." What do Selena Gomez and Karlie Kloss have in common? Aside from being members of Taylor Swift's iconic squad, it seems these two also have a few shared fashion interests. The New York City Marathon, held every year on the first Sunday of November, has grown to be the biggest and most popular marathon. It's no surprise then that the annual event, which took place yesterday, draws quite an impressive crowd of runners. And while a handful of celebrities took to the city streets in their best running shoes (and sportswear attire) to tackle all 26.2 miles of the race, it was 25-year-old model Karlie Kloss who we immediately zeroed in on.

The NYC race marks the model's first time running in a marathon (congrats, Karlie!). And we know there is one question on everyone's mind: What exactly does a model wear to run in a race as big as this one? Well, in Karlie's case, she made her marathon debut in a head-to-toe Adidas by Stella McCartney look: a pair of shorts over some very chic leggings, a long-sleeve running shirt, and silver metallic sneakers completed her fashion-girl running uniform. Before the Dior Spring 2018 show in Paris, we noticed that everyone's looks had one similar common thread, and when we gave it some thought, realised it must have been intentional. The fashion crowd all wore full skirts in a range of sheer tulle, coloured leather, paisley print, feathers, and pleats.

Since Christian Dior appointed Maria Grazia Chiuri in 2016, we've seen a return to the label's core femininity in its designs. Full skirts and a celebration of the female silhouette are dotted throughout each collection. Historically, models are known to be tall. In some cases, very tall by most standards. For instance, Karlie Kloss and Elle Macpherson are famously in the 6-feet-and-over club. But what does it really take to make it as a model, at least as far as height goes? We took a closer look.

We surveyed the stature of 40 of the top models we talk about the most. That includes everyone from the Hadids to VS Angels to the icons referred to simply as Kate and Naomi—no last names needed here—in our quest to discover what the average height across the board. And in some good news for the (slightly) more petite women who aspire to model one day themselves, the median number is below 72 inches.

Forty photogenic, runway-walking, magazine-covering, selfie-taking style stars later, and the average model height, according to our calculations, is 5'9.5". Was this number close to your guess?

When we heard the news that supermodel Karlie Kloss would be walking in the David Jones Autumn/Winter 2017 show, it’s safe to say we were more excited than ever to attend the retail giant’s bi-annual fashion event. Add to that a guest list packed with Sydney’s fashion elite—think Lara Worthington, Pia Miller, Carissa Walford, Ksenija Lukich, Mimi Elashiry, Brooke Testoni—and it was a night not to be missed.

The much-anticipated show saw Kloss open in New Guard Australian designer Macgraw and DJs ambassadors Jessica Gomes, Jesinta Franklin and Jason Dundas lead 46 of Australia’s top models, including Bridget Malcolm and Charlee Fraser, on the catwalk outside Sydney’s iconic St Mary’s Cathedral.

Models showcased the best of the new season from David Jones with a stellar line-up of local and international designers, including Romance Was Born, Zimmermann, Ginger and Smart, Christopher Esber, Bassike, Dion Lee, Carla Zampatti, Alice McCall, Lover, Celine, Balenciaga, Christopher Kane, Alexander McQueen, Saint Laurent, Valentino and Alexander Wang. 

The dramatic finale segment saw bridal showcased on the Collections Launch runway for the first time, with dresses from Reem Acra and Self Portrait to Oscar de la Renta and Monique Lhuillier, amongst others, and a special tribute to George Michael as models walked to his 1990 hit 'Freedom' to close the phenomenal show.
