Often styled as pendant necklaces—though I've also spotted plenty of elegant fish-shaped earrings arriving this season—the trend injects a relaxed, playful spirit into an outfit without ever feeling overly whimsical. It has all the breezy, holiday-ready energy of pearl jewellery, but with a fresher, more unexpected edge.

Although it feels distinctly new for 2026, brands have been quick to embrace the seaside-inspired motif. While jewellers such as Alighieri have perfected the look, I've also found chic interpretations from London favourites including Daisy and Rixo.

Taylor Swift’s old-mine cushion is currently having a very public cultural moment, inspiring countless romantic, vintage-leaning interpretations (and, inevitably, a few rings belonging to people you haven’t spoken to since high school). Before that, Hailey Bieber’s elongated oval diamond had its reign, sending brides-to-be everywhere searching for that same sleek, modern silhouette.

The internet—and our increasingly suspiciously accurate algorithms—only tell part of the story, though.

Engagement rings still have regional accents and dialects. In reality, they reveal where someone lives, what kind of architecture surrounds them, what communities they move through, and even what version of luxury feels most natural in their world.

To understand what’s actually happening beyond the algorithm, I spoke with jewelers and designers across the country, asking them a deceptively simple question: What are your clients really buying? Their answers—combined with client data, purchasing trends, and years of firsthand experience designing rings—revealed that geography plays a much larger role in engagement ring choices than many couples may realize.

A New Yorker might commission a sculptural, never-before-seen design; an Angeleno might choose a champagne diamond that feels more fashion accessory than family heirloom; a San Franciscan might prioritize a low-profile setting that can survive a weekend hike; a Dallas buyer might search for a stone that looks as though it already has a history. The differences are subtle but unmistakable.

Much like the idea that dogs start to resemble their owners, people often choose rings that resemble themselves and, increasingly, the circle they surround themselves with. While social media may have created a shared visual language around engagement rings, cities continue to write their own versions of the story. The places we live shape what we consider beautiful, what we define as timeless, and what kind of luxury feels authentic. A ring may sit on one finger, but the culture, landscape, and personality of an entire city can often be found sparkling back.

Washington D.C.

Washington, D.C.’s engagement ring aesthetic is the jewelry equivalent of a perfectly tailored suit: polished, precise, and intentionally understated. Frank Darling cofounder Kegan Fisher notes that D.C. buyers often lean toward smaller, more practical center stones compared with flashier luxury markets, reflecting the city’s more conservative approach to fine jewelry. While some engagement ring trends may ebb and flow with the cultural moment in Washington, the broader aesthetic remains remarkably consistent: thoughtful proportions, timeless settings, and a quiet confidence that doesn’t rely on excess.

New York

New York has never been a one-ring town. There are arguably two distinct engagement ring aesthetics at play: one that's polished, timeless, and quietly luxurious—think handcrafted solitaires and classic settings that wouldn't look out of place on the Upper East Side—and another that's decidedly more downtown, where sculptural silhouettes, unexpected gemstones, and custom details feel like extensions of the wearer's personal style rather than the latest trend. It's perhaps no surprise that multiple jewelers describe New York clients as some of the most adventurous in the country.

Mazuera says her New York clients "allow [her] to create [her] most experimental work,” commissioning sculptural, fully custom rings while remaining exacting about the details, from high-polish finishes to perfectly executed prongs. That appetite for originality shows up in the stones themselves, too. According to Los Angeles–based label Orianne Jewelry, roughly 42% of its New York City engagement ring clients have chosen gemstone-forward designs this year, with emeralds leading the pack. But New Yorkers haven't abandoned diamonds altogether: L.A. designer Sofia Kaman's 2025 client data shows buyers continue to gravitate toward substantial three- to five-carat, mostly lab-grown diamonds, particularly in cushion and marquise cuts. And as one of the country's fashion capitals, what happens in Manhattan rarely stays there.

Miami

Miami prioritizes maximum sparkle and visual impact, gravitating toward larger center stones in yellow-gold settings that feel equal parts timeless and attention-grabbing. While solitaire settings remain a favorite, they're rarely understated—designers say even the most minimalist rings are chosen with brilliance in mind. Kaman's 2025 client data found Miami shoppers overwhelmingly favor three- to four-carat, colorless lab-grown diamonds across a diverse mix of shapes and styles, suggesting there's no single "Miami ring" beyond a love of shiny, sparkly, oversize center stones.

Given its status as a fast-paced, trend-driving city, Miami shoppers are also among the quickest to embrace changing engagement ring trends—looking to of-the-moment styles favored by influencers and celebrities. According to The Clear Cut's Olivia Landau, Miami saw the most dramatic shift of any market analyzed, with cushion cuts doubling in popularity as emerald cuts rapidly fell out of favor—a reflection of how closely South Florida buyers watch celebrity engagements and social media when shopping for rings of their own.

Los Angeles

Los Angeles has always been a city where reinvention is part of the culture—and engagement rings are no exception. Here, fashion and fine jewelry collide, with buyers embracing what's next while still searching for something that feels deeply personal. Non-white diamonds are starting to reign supreme with both the natural- and lab-diamond crowds, with creamy shades of butter yellow or champagne taking charge. Kaman’s 2025 client data reflects that anything-goes sensibility. Los Angeles buyers typically choose two- to four-carat diamonds, with roughly 70% opting for colorless or near-colorless stones and 30% choosing champagne, brown, or other fancy-colored diamonds.

The typical Los Angeles ring isn’t defined by one aesthetic, though. Mazuera says West Coast clients tend to favor a more relaxed approach to luxury, gravitating toward bezel settings, softer silhouettes, and unexpected pops of color from gemstones like rubies and emeralds. The mood is less “traditional bridal” and more effortless individuality—pieces that feel collected, personal, and styled rather than simply purchased.

There’s always something that feels a bit off, in the best way, explains Frank Darling’s Fisher. Whether it be east-west bezel settings, chunkier bands, tilted stones, imperfect engravings, or something else, the typical Los Angeles engagement ring completely takes the notion of a “traditional” look and throws it out the window.

San Francisco

San Francisco’s engagement ring aesthetic is less about making a statement and more about creating something that can keep up. In a city where a morning meeting can turn into an afternoon hike and a weekend adventure is never far away, Bay Area buyers are gravitating toward rings that feel as functional as they are beautiful. According to Orianne Jewelry, San Francisco clients typically choose two- to 2.5-carat center stones, smaller than the brand’s global average, and often opt for low-profile, comfortable settings designed for an active lifestyle.

That connection to the natural world also shows up in the design itself. Fisher notes that San Francisco clients are often drawn to nature-inspired details, from whimsical, branch-like settings to floral motifs that echo the region’s landscapes and biodiversity. It’s an aesthetic that feels distinctly Northern Californian: organic, personal, and a little unexpected.

The city’s embrace of innovation extends to the diamond itself. Kaman’s numbers show San Francisco shoppers overwhelmingly favor lab-grown diamonds, which account for 85% of purchases, with nearly all clients choosing colorless stones. Marquise cuts lead the market, followed by cushions, ovals, and pears, while overall designs tend to skew more delicate and understated.

Chicago

Chicago’s engagement ring aesthetic is rooted in quiet confidence: classic, polished, and built to last. While coastal markets often use rings as a form of self-expression—experimenting with unexpected stones, sculptural settings, or fashion-forward details—Chicago buyers tend to return to the styles that have defined engagement rings for generations, with an emphasis on proportion, craftsmanship, and a truly exceptional center stone (which, according to both Mazuera and Kaman, are often old-mine cuts, dubbed the Taylor Swift effect).

Chicago and the broader Midwest consistently favor clean, minimalist solitaire settings anchored by larger, high-quality diamonds. These are rings that are immediately recognizable as engagement rings but elevated through the details: a beautifully cut stone, refined materials, and thoughtful proportions rather than excessive ornamentation. Although, bespoke details such as slightly custom settings with interior engravings or birthstones are still highly regarded as ways to make a ring feel unique to a couple rather than something more cookie cutter.

Dallas

Dallas has a very particular relationship with the engagement ring: bigger, yes, but never without meaning. Think Texas-size glamour with a sense of history behind it. Here, the dream ring isn’t necessarily the trendiest stone of the moment; it’s the exceptional diamond that feels like it could become a future heirloom. Large, colorless center stones, classic silhouettes, and vintage-inspired details define a market that values presence without tipping into excess. Stones and settings here can often be inherited all together, with nearlyweds focusing on timeless elements or styles that have been passed down from generations in their families, either left as is or melted down and reworked into slightly more modern, yet still charming, styles.

According to The Clear Cut, Dallas is one of the few major markets charting its own course, with antique-inspired old-mine cuts surging 206% to become the strongest regional preference for vintage-style diamonds. Unlike other cities where cushion cuts have dominated recent trends, Dallas actually saw cushion cuts decline by 33%, suggesting buyers here are less interested in following the crowd and more drawn to stones with character and history.

I'm 23, and I don't have my ears pierced. No, this isn't the start of "two truths and a lie." There isn't a good answer; I just never got around to it. That's not to say I wasn't tempted every time I passed a Claire's while growing up in the aughts. The FOMO was real.

I first met Ashley Moubayed at a Misha & Puff dinner at Tashca in Nolita. As we struck up a conversation, I could immediately tell she was the kind of person whose impeccable taste feels completely intuitive. I also noticed she was wearing the most incredible jewelry, which she made herself.

Moubayed is the founder of the handmade beaded jewelry line Don't Let Disco—a play on the phrase "don't let this go." As we were chatting, she invited me to a summer gifting suite at her Brooklyn studio to see her latest collection in person.

Looking through the designs, every piece felt thoughtful and intentional. For example, the necklace I ended up taking home was made with fully charged rock crystals inspired by Victorian "pools of light" jewelry. It's statement jewelry, but it never feels trendy. What I love most is that each piece feels more like a work of art than an accessory—special and one of a kind. It instantly becomes a prized possession. While I tried on different necklaces, Moubayed referred to one as "art teacher jewelry," a term she tells me was coined by Veronica Szálas Valentine. The description immediately clicked, perfectly capturing the aesthetic.

Before launching her own company, the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund 2025 Finalist spent years working in the art world herself, most recently as a director at Sotheby's. With an Instagram bio that reads "Collector & Curator of Beads," Don't Let Disco feels like a natural extension of that background. After I met Moubayed, it became clear that it's more than just a brand. It's an artistic practice.

I spoke with the designer about her label, her design process, personal style, jewelry trends, and the pieces she's currently loving most.

I saw you worked as a director at Sotheby's before launching Don't Let Disco. I'd love to hear more about your background and career path before the brand.

Before launching Don't Let Disco, I spent several years at Sotheby's, where I worked closely with collectors, artists, and objects that carried incredible histories. It taught me a lot about provenance, craftsmanship, and the emotional reasons people hold on to things. I had always been making jewelry alongside my career, and over time, I realized I wanted to build something of my own. Don't Let Disco grew from that desire and from a fascination with objects that carry memory, history, and personal meaning.

You founded Don't Let Disco in 2021. What prompted that? What drew you to pursuing jewelry and beads?

Don't Let Disco started very intuitively in 2021. I've always been drawn to objects that carry history, and beads, in particular, felt like these small units of memory. You can build with them, but they also each have their own identity. I began working with vintage and found materials quite organically, and it became less about making jewelry in a traditional sense and more about building small compositions that felt personal and collectible. Over time, that practice became the foundation for the brand.

How do your art-historian perspective and fine art background influence the brand? Are there particular artists, movements, or references that inspire you and that you find yourself always returning to?

My background in the art world really shaped how I think about objects and meaning. Working around art and collectibles taught me to pay attention to provenance, context, and the emotional weight things can carry over time. I'm especially drawn to objects and movements where material and memory feel intertwined. I'm less interested in fixed references and more in that idea of an object holding time, whether it's a found material, a vintage bead, or something that's been repurposed into a new context within the work.

How would you describe your personal style, and do you find that informs your label?

My personal style is pretty instinctive and built around contrast. I'm usually drawn to classic foundations, but I like to interrupt that with something more unexpected—texture, proportion, or a piece of jewelry that shifts the tone of the whole look. If I had to describe it in three words, I'd say considered, textural, and instinctive. That same tension shows up in Don't Let Disco, where pieces feel refined but still a bit undone, with the materials and composition doing most of the storytelling.

Can you walk me through your design process when creating a new piece? Does it change each time, or are there recurring starting points?

My process is very material-led and rarely starts the same way twice. I usually begin with a group of vintage beads, found objects, or stones and spend time just looking at how they relate to each other, what feels balanced, what creates tension, what wants to sit together naturally. From there, I start building intuitively rather than sketching something fixed, adjusting as I go based on proportion, color, and feel. There's always a dialogue with the materials. I try not to force them into a predetermined idea but instead respond to what they're already suggesting.

You use globally crafted beads, upcycled materials, and found objects. Can you tell me about your sourcing process?

My sourcing process is quite instinctive and ongoing. I'm constantly looking at vintage beads, antique jewelry, and found materials—often through dealers, small archives, or independent sources I've built relationships with over time. I'm drawn to things that already feel like they've lived a life, whether that's slight irregularity in a bead, patina on a surface, or something that feels singular rather than overly produced. From there, it's about choosing materials that feel like they belong in the same conversation, even if they come from very different places or time periods.

If you could retire one jewelry trend forever, what would it be?

I'm not a big trend follower in general, but I do struggle with how normalized plated jewelry with very high markups has become. There's nothing wrong with plating, but I think there should be more transparency around materials and longevity. I'm always more interested in pieces that are honestly made with materials that are meant to last and age well.

You also host beading bars. What are they, and how did that idea come about?

The beading bars started pretty organically from how people were already interacting with the brand. I wanted to create a space where people could actually sit with the materials and make something themselves, even in a simple way, rather than just seeing the finished object. It's really about giving people a reason to slow down and work with their hands again—especially in a moment where so much of life is digital and screen-based—and letting them understand the process through doing.

What's next for Don't Let Disco? Is there anything you're working on or hoping for that you can share?

We launched our first fine jewelry collection during February's New York Fashion Week, which has been a big step for us and really feels like an expansion of the language we've been building with beads and found materials. Right now, we're focused on growing that category in a really considered way. We're also expanding the Dumbo studio into more of a living space for the brand, where we can host events, beading bars, and more direct community moments alongside the work itself.

Do you have any early, formative jewelry memories? I saw you mention your mother's 22-karat gold bangles in an interview.

I do. My mother's 22‑karat bangles are the first. The sound of them clinking together was a kind of homing device for me, comforting and familiar and a way to locate her in a room. My grandmother was the other big influence. She had a friend who was a jewelry designer in the '70s, and she would commission these cool, sometimes avant‑garde rings made from yellow- and white-gold scrap. She wore them everywhere, even just to the grocery store. They were part of her beauty ritual and her identity. Even when she got sick, right before she passed, she would still put them on for a photo. They made her feel like herself, and that, to me, is the power of objects: jewelry with real soul.

What's the most complimented piece you own?

Right now, it is our Deco Ring. People of all genders go crazy for it. It walks this line between antique art deco and contemporary design, made in 18k yellow and white gold with natural brilliant white diamonds, and the yellow bands are set with champagne diamonds, so they have this warm, "lit from within" glow. They stack beautifully with almost anything but also hold their own as a single statement. They are chunky and weighty in the best way, with a soft square profile. People are constantly sliding them off my fingers to play, stack, and find their own combinations.

Do you have any go-to tips for styling your jewelry?

It is very intuitive for me, so it is hard to codify, but I always think the starting point is how a piece makes you feel. If you put something on and you feel like your most "you" self, pay attention to what you love about that piece, whether it is the proportion, the color, or the texture, and use that as your North Star as you add more. Do not rush or force it. Let your jewelry wardrobe build slowly, in conversation with your life.

You've referred to some pieces as "art teacher jewelry." Can you elaborate on that? Why do you think this aesthetic is resonating right now?

The term was actually coined by Veronica Szálas Valentine, and I loved it immediately. To me, it captures this spirit of expressive, slightly eccentric pieces that feel lived‑in and deeply personal—exactly the kind of jewelry an art teacher might wear as an extension of their identity. I think it is resonating now because we are having a kind of renaissance after the dullness of quiet luxury, where everything was policed into beige, black, and white. People are craving color, quirk, and bolder statements again, pieces that signal who they are and maybe even inspire the people around them.

What jewelry brands, designers, or smaller online shops are exciting you right now? Where do you typically discover new jewelry designers?

I am very in love with Cece Jewellery. Their enamel work carries this sweet, romantic whimsy that feels distinct from so much of what is out there. Goodluck Handmade by Hannah [Weber] is a geometric wonder of incredible inlay work, and Octave Jewelry is another favorite to follow. Ope [Omojola] brings you right to the bench as she sets and carves stones, and watching that transformation is endlessly satisfying. Reut [Ringel] continues to inspire me with her ability to turn 18k gold into this rich, blackened tone. Her pieces feel deeply sensual and sculptural. Sara Katherine Jacobson is doing wild, brilliant things with form and pushing the boundaries of what playful design can look like, and I am completely captivated by the mind and eye of Sophie Gardner. I also adore EliBurch Jewelry.

I tend to discover many of these designers through friends or friends of friends, and I really value that sense of community. I am always drawn to artists who are not just producing for the sake of being a creative director but who are genuinely thinking, experimenting, and making work that feels fresh.

What are some items on your wish list at the moment?

At the top of the list is simply the time to turn our Deco Ring into mismatched huggies. I can see them so clearly. I am also dreaming about a Jade Ruzzo Lady Compact Mirror necklace from her latest collection. One of Sara Jacobson's gold orbs with a precious gemstone would be incredible paired with our DLD reimagined Victorian "pools of light" orbs. Honestly, anything from TenThousandThings is always on my mind. And there is a tiny artwork by jewelry designer and artist Andrea Gutierrez—crossed hands wearing a real beaded necklace with precious metals worked into the scene—at Lane Stewart Gallery that I cannot stop thinking about.

Do you have any jewelry trend predictions for summer? Looking ahead, what do you think we'll see this fall?

I think color is undeniably back, joyful and unapologetic. I am also seeing and loving the return of super-long necklaces and the idea of jewelry that migrates, pieces that travel from your neck, arms, and ears into your home and objects. I imagine more adornment on things like door tassels, decorative cigarette boxes, and chairs—little extensions of jewelry energy spilling into the rest of your space.

Williams used her custom jewelry to symbolize the connection between her worlds of high-fashion glamour and the physicality required to be one of the best athletes in the world. Every detail was a deliberate nod to "Body of Science," Gatorade's just-launched multiyear global research initiative, which is bringing attention to the lack of research dedicated specifically to women’s bodies. It’s a subtle reminder that while we’ve mastered the aesthetic of the female form, we’re still catching up on the science behind it.

Before the big event, we connected with Venus Williams to chat about following in her sister Serena's footsteps as cochair, conquering Met Gala–day nerves, and why her bespoke jewelry was the ultimate power play on fashion's biggest night of the year.

What was your initial reaction upon being asked to be a cochair this year? Did Serena give you any advice from her time as cochair in 2019?

My initial reaction was, honestly, oh my gosh, yay! There was celebration, disbelief, and a lot of gratitude to have even been considered. I don’t think anyone ever feels worthy of being a cochair of the Met, so it was an incredible feeling. I remember being immensely proud when my sister was cochair, so I know she feels the same about me. I’m still in disbelief; it’s one of the greatest honors I’ve ever had. I’m planning on enjoying the whole experience.

Tell me about your Met Gala jewelry.

My accessories on Monday night are all custom pieces, and they're really designed to bring to life that only 6% of global sports science research focuses exclusively on the female body. Every detail was thoughtfully crafted to connect back to the Body of Science story in a way that feels cohesive and expressive.

How did Body of Science inspire your Met Gala jewelry and looks for the other Met moments?

We crafted looks together that were really meant to call attention to the women’s sports science research problem, including my pre-gala dinner look, the press preview event look, and, of course, my accessories for Monday night. I really wanted each look to tell an individual story on its own, while together telling a bigger story about the power of female bodies and the need to better understand them.

Why is working with Gatorade a good fit for you? What are they working on that excites you?

As an athlete, Gatorade has obviously always been there throughout my career. They have always led from the front when it comes to investing in women’s sports and pushing the ball forward, and when they came to me about Body of Science and being a meaningful part of the solution, it was an easy yes.

Congratulations on your recent wedding! What's more nerve-racking: walking down the aisle or walking up the Met Gala steps, and why?

Walking up the Met Gala stairs will definitely be more nerve-racking for me. I’m naturally quite shy, even if it doesn’t always come across. I’ve always been deeply introverted. Though I’ve grown into more of an "extroverted introvert" over time. That’s why this moment feels a little more daunting. Walking down the aisle felt completely natural. I already knew I wanted to marry my husband, so there were no nerves.

How has the sports science research gap impacted your career? Why is female-specific sports science data important in tennis and other sports?

When Gatorade was first sharing Body of Science, I guess I wasn’t surprised, but was obviously a little frustrated that I spent decades optimizing my fitness and wellness to be the best on the court, and realizing it wasn’t optimized for me. It’s so important for women to have information, resources, and education catered to us and our unique needs, and I’m excited that the next generation of female tennis players, as well as females across life stages, will have better, science-backed data to make decisions about their bodies. People keep asking, “What’s next for women’s sports?” and I think this is a huge part of it.

Ever since I got engaged last year, I've become a jewelry snob. I'm Who What Wear's unofficial fine jewelry reporter, and my Instagram and Pinterest saves are all kinds of wacky jewelry trends I write about and shop for myself.

Lately, though, I've found myself gravitating toward diamonds that aren't demanding all of your attention. You know the kind—less blinding sparkle, more of a soft, candlelit glow that feels quietly expensive. That's exactly the appeal of Georgian-set diamonds, a centuries-old style that's suddenly back on my radar and, honestly, my wish list.

The technique dates back to the Georgian era in the United Kingdom, when jewelry was designed to be worn in low light (read: dinner parties lit by chandeliers, not LEDs). Instead of the super-precise, ultra-exposed settings we see today, diamonds were set into gold collets in the 18th and 19th centuries throughout the Georgian period. The setting is reminiscent of a modern-day bezel but has a bit more structure. There's usually a slightly raised rim and chunkier prongs holding everything in place, which gives the stones this moody, glowing effect rather than a sharp, high-watt sparkle. It feels softer, more handcrafted, and knowingly intentional.

Just like old mine–cut diamonds, antique settings like Georgian-set diamond jewelry are having a moment. What's really pushed them back into the spotlight is the current wave of effortlessly cool jewelry placement. Zendaya's engagement ring from Jessica McCormack basically sealed the deal for me. Her signature blackened-gold and button-back Georgian settings make the whole look feel modern instead of costumey. "People are craving a sense of permanence and meaning in what they buy, especially with something as significant as a piece you plan to wear everyday, like an engagement ring," Stephanie Mazuera, a New York City-based fine jeweler and designer, explains to Who What Wear. Her Liltih ring, a modern take on the traditional two-tone Georgian setting, is a rising favorite amongst the fashion set in the city. "With my Lilith engagement ring, I wanted to preserve the romance and old world charm of the Georgian cutdown setting while refining it for how people wear their jewelry today," Mazuera explains. "The Lilith is designed to let in more light and sit flush with a wedding band, as most brides today crave the option of a seamless stack."

There's Zoë Kravitz, a Jessica McCormack ambassador, who wears Goergian-set diamond pieces in that undone, layered way that makes you rethink everything you thought you knew about antique jewelry. If unfamiliar with the lingo, you may feel intimidated by questions such as these. Steph Mazuera, an NYC-based fine-jewelry designer, was as eager to answer my questions as I was to ask them. Mazuera shared, “I work with both lab and natural, often using lab diamonds for their accessibility and impact, especially in pieces like studs and tennis bracelets. That said, natural diamonds have an undeniable individuality, and when I source them, I’m especially drawn to antique stones or those with unique, unconventional character.”

In fact, some brands deal only in natural diamonds. Take Aaryah, for example. Founder Megan Kothari, who works only with natural stones, shared, “There is an energy to them that you can actually feel.” Alternatively, Dorsey, an online-only brand that works exclusively with lab-grown stones, highlights the extensive range of lab-grown diamonds and sapphires available across a variety of aesthetics and price points.

“Jewellery should hold emotion—a quiet reflection of who you are and the life you’re living,” said Brahe. Her eponymous brand takes inspiration from her Scandinavian roots and her poetic nature, which became clearer to me the more I learned of her beginnings.

One of the first things Brahe shared with me was a charming recollection of her childhood: “My earliest memory of jewellery is watching my father search all night for my mother’s lost Cartier watch along the waterfront in Hornbæk, Denmark. It held such meaning for her, and seeing the relief on her face when he found it made me understand, even as a child, how deeply jewellery can become part of someone’s life.” Brahe’s understanding of the relationship between a piece and its wearer is manifest in her work.

During my visit to the new NYC boutique on Madison Avenue (a beautifully intimate and heavily curated space), I witnessed Brahe’s enigmatic whimsy. “My designs often begin with a feeling—something I sense but can’t yet describe,” said Brahe. The cascading pearls, architectural finishes, oceanic references, and sculptural diamonds are all conscious details designed to elicit emotion in the wearer. It only made sense when she told me how she spent her younger years encompassed by antiques and heirlooms, which she links to her "desire to create pieces that feel timeless."

Those who wear a Sophie Bille Brahe piece return because, as Brahe puts it, “they feel connected to the universe we’ve created. Each piece is designed to complement the next, so their collection becomes a personal narrative.” Brahe’s storytelling is evident throughout her work, from her Icon pieces, such as the Grande Ensemble Ocean ring, which she wears as a gift after the birth of her daughter, to her intricate pearlwork. For Brahe, purity and narrative are the emphasis: “How simply can you show a diamond, how clean can you show a pearl,” and how “when you choose something that resonates deeply, it becomes a companion, something you carry through your days and perhaps pass on one day.”

Kinn Studio

Jewelry is personal. To Brahe, it is “emotional.” To a fiancé, it is a declaration of love (both to the giver and the receiver). To Kinn Studio, it is an heirloom. “For us, jewelry isn’t meant to sit in a box waiting for a special occasion. It becomes meaningful through wear—through the life that happens around it,” said Kinn’s founder, Jennie Yoon. Yoon began the studio to re-create family heirlooms lost in a home robbery. Kinn’s beginnings touched me because, sadly, I share a similar story. My family originates from Cyprus, and much of my yiaya’s collection has been stolen. Years and years of legacy stones and generations of metalwork lost. The pain arises not from a monetary loss but from the loss of tangible artifacts of family history.

Kinn’s dedication to designing modern heirlooms is not only inspiring but also a solution for customers who want jewelry that feels heritaged. “A modern heirloom, through the lens of Kinn, is something that lives with you through different chapters of your life,” said Yoon. As my grandmother viewed her pieces, Yoon notes, “fine-jewelry collections are rarely built all at once.” Though, “a necklace is usually the easiest place to start, especially a simple gold chain that you never have to take off,” recommends Yoon. She pointed out the Mia and Matisse Link Chains as beautiful beginner pieces. “I also love suggesting a small pair of gold hoops or huggies—they instantly elevate whatever you’re wearing,” shared Yoon. Kinn Studio recently celebrated the opening of an NYC flagship boutique in the West Village. I stepped into the space and instantly felt as if I had opened my grandmother’s jewelry box. I look to Yoon to weigh in on the lab-versus-natural discussion. Yoon answered with great nuance: “We offer both lab and natural diamonds at Kinn, and the right choice really comes down to what matters most to the client. Some people are drawn to the rarity and tradition of natural diamonds, while others prioritize size or budget, where lab diamonds can offer incredible value.”

Steph Mazuera

My introduction to Steph Mazuera was through Who What Wear associate features editor Ana Escalante. Here’s Escalante on her bespoke engagement ring from the designer: “I first discovered Mazuera through TikTok, and after she randomly messaged me out of the blue one day, showing me a picture of a diamond she saw she thought would be perfect for me, I was convinced. Mazuera ended up creating my engagement ring—a half-bezel bypass setting sculptured around a one-of-a-kind buttery-yellow pear-shaped diamond. Over the last few months, I've collected a few of Mazuera's diamond basic pieces for everyday use since I've fallen so in love with her designs.”

I met with Mazuera in her Downtown NYC office to discuss her new line of everyday diamond pieces—the Billie Tennis Bracelet, the Alpi Earring, the Arc Tennis Bracelet, and more—all of which are handcrafted in New York. Like Yoon, Mazuera encourages clients to start with the fundamentals. “I recommend starting with diamond studs or a classic tennis bracelet, pieces you can enjoy daily and use as the foundation for building an entire fine-jewelry collection,” suggested Mazuera.

Then, we touched on the delicate topic of lab-grown versus natural diamonds. Asking her to be succinct was difficult, given all its complexities. A bonus of Mazuera's consultation is her kind, educational tone and extensive industry knowledge. “There’s an undeniable romance to natural diamonds, formed over billions of years, but not every purchase needs to carry that weight. Lab-grown offers a more effortless way in while still being real and enduring, especially when sourced with the same level of care and quality as natural stones," shared Mazuera.

I asked Meg Strachan, Dorsey’s founder, what is exclusive to the Dorsey buying experience. “We lead with design, not stone hierarchy, and [Dorsey sells] every lab stone from diamond to sapphire.” While "most heritage brands keep fine-jewelry aesthetics behind high price points, [Dorsey offers] the same design across multiple stones and metals, allowing the customer to choose how they enter the space.”

“Fine jewelry is an investment in the materials, but it’s really up to the customer and their budget,” clarifies Strachan. “A first-time buyer can start with high-quality lab-grown moissanite for a few hundred dollars or can opt for 14K gold and lab-grown diamond pieces.” Strachan goes on to note, “These stones are molecularly identical to mined counterparts.” As a first-time buyer myself, I can appreciate Strachan’s clear presentation of Dorsey's approach to the lab-grown conversation.

You’ll see that family is a common theme when talking about jewelry. Dorsey is no different. Here is Strachan's advice to shoppers: “Buy pieces that you’ll actually reach for every day. I always build my outfit around my jewelry, which is something I learned from my grandmother, Dorsey. Aaryah is an investment in natural diamonds. I saw this firsthand in my visit to the NYC showroom. There, I met with Kothari. “I built Aaryah because the traditional jewelry experience often felt transactional, intimidating, and honestly very male-driven,” she shared. Her intention was to create a space that felt collaborative. “Everything we do is centered around the client—how they want to shop, what they’re celebrating, how they want to feel. Whether it’s online or in our NYC showroom, each private shopping appointment is curated and deeply personal.”

At the showroom, I tried on the BB Thelma ring. It is a pinky ring that features a pear-cut stone (your choice of sapphire, gemstone, or natural diamond—I personally love the look of a yellow diamond) in a bypass setting, available in yellow gold or platinum with a satin or high-shine finish. It's a town of idealistic people who care about how things are made and how they look, and Omega has that same energy."

Naturally, in a store filled with timepieces, I inquired about his personal favorite Omega style. He revealed an obsession with a specific Constellation model. "There's a Constellation with a black face, gold bezel, and leather strap that I'm really obsessed with," he said. "I have a very busy existence, and sometimes I'm changing throughout the day, and this watch can adapt to everything. It's not too dressy or too casual." He noted that he gets a lot of compliments on it and that Omega watches, in general, are great conversation starters. "People who know, know, and they care about the aesthetics, the engineering, the legacy of the brand," Powell added.

Following my conversation with Powell, I explored the new store. I admired the iconic Seamaster, widely recognized as the "James Bond watch," and the Speedmaster, the legendary "moon watch" worn by Buzz Aldrin. However, the Aqua Terra truly caught my eye.

What does your dream Galentine's Day celebration look like, and how are you planning on spending it this year?

Since it's cold right now in New York and I've been traveling so much, I think a cozy night in would be the ideal thing for me to do. It would be decorating my apartment with balloons, different Galentine's things to make it festive at home, and cooking while enjoying the company of others in the comfort of my own space.

Galentine's Day offers a great opportunity to share your love for the people in your life, but also to double down on self-care. Is there any way you'd like to give yourself some TLC?

I love giving myself self-care! I need to figure out a way to implement it more. Right now, I'm obsessed with the Dr. Jart+ Cryo Rubber Firming Face Mask ($16). The mask is great to use when I'm traveling, but also for just spending a night at home. They also make great gifts to give as a little Galentine treat if you want to treat some of your friends to it.

I look to give my girlfriends anything from self-care to home things—really anything they can use on a daily basis, or they wouldn't buy for themselves.

Galentine's Day can be celebrated in many different ways, whether you opt for dinner with friends or take yourself out and dress up for the occasion. Do you have any beauty finds you swear by to exude Galentine's Day energy?

I'm obsessed with fragrances! The Prada Paradoxe Intense Eau de Parfum ($190) is my staple—I love this perfume. I also feel like I have a different perfume in every single bag in my closet so that I'm always prepared, but that one's my favorite. In terms of makeup, I definitely love a blush like Laura Geller's Holiday 2025 Baked Blush ($32). It's one of my go-tos! I've just recently become a blush girl, so I'm finding my staples.

What are you most looking forward to experiencing in 2026 beyond your Galentine's Day festivities?

It would probably be "me" time. I'm going to prioritize myself a bit more this year. It gets so easy to get wrapped up in the work of it all and lose yourself along the way, so I'd like to give myself some more self-care days throughout the rest of the year.
