I've long had a theory that most fashion capitals have a shoe that feels inseparable from its style identity. For London, it's the loafer. For L.A., it's the flip-flop. As one of my go-to references for relaxed, French-leaning styling, I'm always eager to see how Alexa Chung will style the ubiquitous shoe. Despite being in the throes of summer, as an autumn person at heart, I'm already making note of the outfits that will be taking off next season. This week, courtesy of one of the chicest women over 50, I spotted a French-inspired jeans-and-shoe pairing I'm convinced stylish dressers will be relying on in just a few weeks' time.

Just because these wear-with-everything trainers aren't quite as ubiquitous as they were a couple of years ago doesn't make them any less chic. In fact, I'd argue the opposite. As someone who is just about to embark on a girls’ holiday to Mallorca later in the month, you can only imagine my delight upon realising that Jennifer Aniston had just touched down on the Balearic Island for a vacation of her own.

Earlier this year, I made the decision to curb my shopping by setting a spending limit on trendy purchases so I don't end up with a closet full of individual pieces that I struggle to style together and so I can actually save up for worthwhile wardrobe investments that will ideally outlast trends and outsmart the seasons. When Gap posted a video of a CD player with a familiar-looking hand pressing play on The Cranberries' "Linger" on Monday, I immediately had a feeling it was Hailey Bieber, and so did the comment section. Since then, my TikTok For You page has been filled with videos about the collaboration. Within 24 hours of the teaser, it was already obvious that these had become the jeans that every fashion person couldn't wait to shop, and today, July 16, they're now out.

As a fashion editor, I've noticed Bieber wearing Gap's Low Rise '90s Loose Jeans for the last couple of years, making them go viral, so seeing her officially work with the brand just makes sense.

Inspired by 1996—her birth year—and her own understated style, The Hailey Jean is a denim capsule designed around the relaxed silhouettes she's become known for, using Bieber's favorite vintage Gap jeans as a reference. The collection features the Extra Baggy and the '90s Low Rise Loose, with three washes across both styles.

"Gap has been a part of my wardrobe since I was a kid, so this came together very organically," Bieber shared in a press release. "Nineteen-ninety-six was the year I was born, and I get a lot of style inspiration from the '90s because there was something so effortless about that era and the way people wore denim. We wanted the campaign and the collection to capture that same feeling in a way that felt modern, nostalgic, and personal."

Touching down in Paris this week, Claudia Schiffer stepped off her flight and into the city wearing a travel-friendly jeans-and-sandals combination that had her ready to hit Paris's streets on landing. Whilst most people take a comfort-first approach to airport dressing—I've seen too many track pants and leggings worn with flip-flops or slides to count this summer—I've long been an advocate for the French-girl-inspired jeans-and-sandals outfit for summer travel days.

Paired with flared jeans, they tap into a retro French-girl aesthetic, whilst the longer hem skims over the foot, adding a little more coverage. Meanwhile, the generous flare on the hem adds some room to the jeans, preventing the rigid fabrication from feeling too restrictive. But my ultimate hack for travelling in jeans is to choose a well-worn flared pair that's long been broken in.
