I vividly remember the first time I came across Jeanne Damas during the earlier days of Instagram. I even recall trying to find her exact lip combo back when she would blend two lipsticks together and apply them with her fingers for that soft, blurred finish. She quickly became one of the most popular modern-day references for French style.

Since then, she's remained known for her effortless aesthetic and is now a designer as well, having launched her brand Rouje in 2016. For this February's New York Fashion Week, Damas shares her diary, including the Ralph Lauren show, a Rouje event, and the Tory Burch show.

What are some of your favorite New York tips?

I always stay at the same hotel. I love building habits when I travel. It makes me feel at home instantly. I love staying in neighborhoods filled with young, creative energy. It's incredibly inspiring. In Paris, we don't always experience that same avant-garde spirit in such an intense way. It gives me so much inspiration for Rouje. I love that mix of youth, diversity, and creativity. It actually reminds me a bit of Belleville. As a mom, one of my best tips for flying to NYC is to take melatonin on the plane and try to sleep properly. It really helps fight jet lag and arrive feeling fresh and ready.

Favorite moment of the trip?

My getaway to The Met between two fashion week appointments to discover the exhibition Seeing Silence by the Finnish painter Helene Schjerfbeck. A moment of calm to discover this artist. The Met is a bit of a must-stop whenever I come to NYC; there's always something to see.

The best thing you ate or drank?

The best BLT is definitely in New York. I love having it as a second breakfast at Dimes, sometimes even grabbing one to take away before heading back to Paris. And Le Dive for a pastis. It has one of the only terraces in the summer, which makes it feel like a little Parisian escape.

Favorite shops, restaurants, and places to go?

For years, my first stop in NYC was Maryam Nassir Zadeh. Now, I feel like I need to discover a new ritual address. Of course, I love vintage shopping: Ellen Vintage, Desert Vintage, and Duo are always on my list. Bar Oliver is perfect for drinks. Le Chêne is a beautiful new French restaurant I tried this week—modern cuisine, very "fooding," and absolutely incredible. The MoMA is always a good idea, and I also love visiting galleries like Grimm, PPOW, or 1969 Gallery.

A trend you're already seeing everywhere?

I arrived wearing my Blundstones without realizing that basically everyone in New York already had them, but honestly, when it's -20°C, you understand why.

What was your approach to packing? I'd love to hear about the essentials that you made sure to bring!

I always travel with my father's baptism medal. It's my little ritual so the plane doesn't crash. My perfect sleep kit is essential: melatonin, earplugs, my own pillow, and a silk eye mask. I'm a bit of a princess and the pea when it comes to sleep. I need my routine, no matter what. I brought a hair diffuser (because of the American plugs), my toiletry bag, and simple makeup—a face palette and tinted balms. A big bag is key so I can walk around all day with all my essentials. To survive the New York cold, [I have] Damart thermal layers, a Rouje neck warmer, good boots, and shearling pieces. It was also the first time I packed workout clothes to go to the gym. I actually recommend exercising in the morning when you're jet-lagged. It helps reset your body.

You also launched an exclusive preview of your new collection while you were in town at Rouje's SoHo store. How would you describe the new pieces?

The new collection is inspired by Ilona and Carole—strong, inspiring women with that effortless, timeless femininity. It's about confidence, subtle sensuality, and pieces that feel both iconic and easy to wear.

This year is Rouje's 10th anniversary. Are there any things you can share that you have on your bucket list for the next 10 years of Rouje?

Opening a Rouje café, something like a madeleine de Proust, a coffee shop that feels nostalgic and deeply connected to Rouje's universe. Organizing our first big show but maybe in a more artistic way, very Rouje. Perhaps something involving actresses. Opening more boutiques in Europe or maybe a permanent space in Asia. Continuing and deepening our support of Maison des Femmes de Saint-Denis and developing the lifestyle side of Rouje: exploring my passion for interiors, creating special pieces—maybe even things for my daughter—and continuing collaborations with French and European artisans.

Is there anything else you'd like to include?

New York always reminds me why I love creation so much. The energy is intense, bold, fearless. It pushes me to dream bigger.

What you wore: I was wearing a very "me" look with rolled-up jeans (which are really coming back into trend), a small buttoned gray cardigan, a gorgeous shearling coat, and a leopard bag to give the whole outfit a twist.

The narrative that French people's style is classic and safe and that even the fashion crowd is anti-trends is quite dated, if you ask me. I find that French women fully embrace seasonal trends while putting their signature, effortless, no-fuss Parisian twist on the way they style them. One of the seasonal trends I'm seeing constantly these days among the French is undoubtedly capri pants. Yes, people around the globe are wearing them, but as someone who exhaustively researches what people are wearing, I can confirm that French women are really leaning into the capri pants trend. Call it the Brigitte Bardot effect, or simply credit it to the fact that they have good taste.

One of the French fashion people who is fully embracing the capri pants trend is the eternal It girl Jeanne Damas, who recently attended the Jacquemus show during men's Paris Fashion Week. She paired hers with a color-coordinating structured blazer, white top, and the shoes French women are constantly pairing with capri pants this summer: simple high-heeled mule sandals. If you've scrolled through social media content dedicated to French fashion and beauty trends in the past few years, there's a high chance you've come across an image of French designer, creative director, model, and founder of fashion label Rouje, Jeanne Damas. Her signature scarlet lips combined with her wispy bangs and shoulder-sweeping bob may be strong call-backs to what we beauty lovers tend to associate with "traditional" Parisian beauty, but there's no denying that Damas' recognizable face has become synonymous with what could only be described as the continuation of an international and multigenerational beauty movement.

The launch of Rouje in 2016 brought French-girl style to the U.S. with a flair for vintage-inspired silhouettes, eye-catching prints, and the color red. In 2022, we saw the launch of the Les Filles en Rouje beauty line, which has since expanded to include skincare, nail polish, blush, and lip products to help customers elevate their everyday beauty routines by adding the products Damas developed to echo her own. While we're excited to see what's next for both Rouje and Les Filles en Rouje, we'll also be following along as she embarks on a new chapter in her personal life: becoming a mother of two.

We caught up with Damas in between the many fashion shoots and shows of Paris Fashion Week to learn more about her updated pregnancy-safe approach to beauty and self-care as well as the essential beauty products that define her morning and night routines.

Catching Up With Jeanne Damas

With the trend cycle moving as quickly as it does, how have you determined your personal approach to beauty?

I've hardly changed my beauty routine. My mother taught me early on [about] the importance of protecting your skin from the sun since it not only prevents cancer but also signs of aging. In my opinion, It's the number one skincare tip everyone should know. No sun between noon and 4 p.m. in the summer, and sunscreen every day of the year instead of normal cream after serum. I'm very "less is more" in my routine! Double cleansing in the evening is very important, and so is hydration. I also love LED masks.

Congratulations on your growing family! Have you experienced any changes to your skin so far? If so, how have you adjusted your skincare regimen to meet your needs?

When I'm not pregnant I tend to have hormonal acne, so I always have one or two spots which I have a hard time getting rid of. I try zinc cures from time to time. Being pregnant, I don't have these problems. The pregnancy glow is not an urban legend—it truly exists!

You've been known to love shopping at French pharmacies. What do you believe sets them apart from others?

I'm not that much into French pharmacy products anymore. I think what concept stores like Oh My Cream propose is more interesting as they propose many new brands and clean beauty innovations. In pharmacies, I buy just the Klorane Dry Shampoo ($34).

Are there any standout skincare products and ingredients you use during autumn? Why do they stand out to you?

My staple product for the change of season is a face oil as my skin is dryer. The Les Filles en Rouje L'Huile Visage ($70) is perfect for my mixed-type skin, and I love its orange blossom scent.

What are your go-to products to add the perfect amount of fullness and texture to your hair?

I found my perfect hair routine by accident after getting home in the rain. My usually very straight hair had a natural wave. Since then, every morning I wet my hair with a diffuser usually used to water plants, I add a bit of Les Filles en Rouje Le Brume Cheveux ($42), and use a Dyson diffuser to dry the hair. I totally fake my French-girl hair, but it works!

How do you achieve your signature light, wispy bangs?

There's less hair for the bangs, with a couple of strands that I've cut a bit shorter to have more texture. My inspirations are '90s actresses like Sophie Marceau or Penelope Cruz. Delphine Courteil has been my hairdresser since I was 15 and knows all the secrets and tips.

Let's say you have five minutes before leaving home. What does an express beauty routine look like for you currently?

I use a hair clip with a flower if I have a bad hair day or if it's dirty. I use Les Filles en Rouje Le Correcteur ($42), the face palette for some blush, and an eyelash curler. I finish with a colored lip balm. A pair of jeans and an oversize sweater and I'm ready to go. I'm very quick to get ready in the morning even f I have time. I'm always ready before my boyfriend.

What beauty must-haves are in your everyday bag for busy days on set and in the office?

A Victoria Beckham lip pencil for definition and the Les Filles en Rouje La Palette Visage ($55) for blush and lip color. A lip balm finishes the look.

We're so excited to see what's next for Les Filles en Rouje. What do you see for the brand's next steps?

The future of Les Filles en Rouje is quite exciting indeed! I love what we’ve built with the team, and I am very proud of what the brand is becoming. Our next steps include diversifying our product range, blending our signature French aesthetic with new categories, expanding globally, and including collaborations with international creatives.

Do you have a can't-live-without Les Filles en Rouje product, and how do you like to wear it?

It’s tough to choose just one, but the La Palette Visage is definitely a must-have. It has everything I need for my daily routine—highlighters, blush, and lipsticks—all the essentials in one practical palette!

When it comes to styling, sometimes less really is more, and no one seems to understand this better than actor Laura Harrier. Consistently creating outfits that have me wondering how wardrobe basics can look so good, Harrier has—on many occasions—inspired some of my most pared-back yet chicest looks.

Stepping out in yet another simple yet elevated ensemble, Harrier chose a relaxed blue button-down to form the foundation of her look. Leaving her shirt untucked and partially unbuttoned, she leaned into the casual nature of the piece. In a rich blue shade, the Spiderman star's button-down is a true staple that brands up and down the high street are backing this season. With a billowy silhouette and versatile styling options, it can be worn neatly tucked into high-waisted trousers or left semi-indone and paired with denim, à la Harrier.

Of all the fashion weeks, Paris definitely has the most dressed-up attendees—sparkly dresses, stilettos, and designer jewels are all the norm in the City of Light. Jeanne Damas is just so French. Understandable, considering she is a Parisian by birth, I know, but as we’re sat in Who What Wear’s new Russell Square townhouse for an exclusive shoot with the model turned street style star turned designer, there’s a palpable difference in l’attitude. I’m up and down from my laptop like a yo-yo, firing off emails, multitasking like a whirling dervish, regretting what I wore today for our shoot (seriously, this weather). Meanwhile, Damas—who arrived on time, without a scrap of makeup on, looking completely I-can’t-even-make-eye-contact levels of glorious in a recognisably “Jeanne” ensemble of checked blazer, jeans, navy top, gold Michael Vivien sandals and a little straw bag with a book poking out—is sipping a black coffee, reclining on a desk chair to the point where it’s most comfortable to just have her long legs up on the table as she casually takes her morning phone calls and messages.

In advance of the photo shoot, there were no demands or caveats to our time with her. No hairstyling today either, thanks—Jeanne just spritzes water on her ends, scrunches and goes. And absolutely zero fuss about what she will or won’t wear for the pictures. Damas is the laid-back style icon of any editor’s dreams, needing only 20 minutes of makeup (to put this into context, regular human beings require at least 45) before throwing on her first look and heading straight out onto the street to be photographed. She laughs. She chats with the entire team. She looks cooler than cool. We get the shots wrapped up an hour ahead of schedule.

This unpretentious, alluring effortlessness is precisely why the fashion world—and basically anyone with an Instagram account—has fallen for her and contributes greatly to the success of her fashion line, Rouje. While the purchase of one of her affordable printed dresses will definitely edge you closer to nonchalance, the truth is that effortlessness has to come from a genuinely relaxed, organic place.

“I’m lazy, you know,” says Damas of her method. The “French are not crazy about fashion. It’s true—we know we love fashion, and I have a fashion brand, but it’s not my life, and I don’t know, I can’t speak for everybody, but for me, I know what’s good on me. I know exactly what to wear every morning. I know that I love a big sweater or men's clothes with a mix of feminine clothes. It’s inné, do you know what I mean?”

Innate: a great example of which would be the 25-year-old’s approach to dressing for the wedding season: “So if I go to a wedding, I love to be the most simple,” she says, rejecting the preposterous idea of a fascinator or the usual trappings that come with formal attire. “Me? I love to wear big fluid pants, a shirt, have my hair looking normal, and a big red.” (That’s Jeanne’s delightful English expression for scarlet lips.) “When you come like that everybody looks at you because you are so simple.”

“It’s funny because I have done this book about Parisians, and in the book, I wanted to break the cliché because for me, Parisian girls are not at all the most stylish,” Damas says, much to my surprise when I ask her why she thinks girls across the globe are so fascinated by French style. “When I go to New York or even London, I see way more stylish people than in my city. In general, French girls are not sophisticated.” Yet the minute a new Rouje drop lands online, the POA for chic women everywhere is get it or regret it.

Within two days of the first collection arriving in 2016, it was gone, only to be disseminated across the world via selfies and thanks to the hashtag #girlsinrouje. “We were surprised, and we were like ‘oops!’” says Damas of that first season’s runaway success, not expecting (even with her 633K-strong personal Instagram following) that they’d ever need to try to produce more stock. The team is now planning to make larger quantities for 2018: Don’t expect her pieces to become so available that you can buy them in bulk or that they’ll become ubiquitous, but from what she tells me, it’s looking likely that you’ll finally be able to pick up that ultimate summer frock.

For those who aren’t yet acquainted with the cult brand, the easy, chic designs come from real-life inspiration Jeanne picks up anywhere and everywhere, naming the pieces after her nearest and dearest (even her boyfriend, Pilou, has a mannish jacket dedicated to him), and creating the line with her good friend and an established name in Parisian fashion, designer Nathalie Dumeix. When Jeanne was younger, her father was a chef at the famous Parisian bistro Le Square Trousseau, which just so happened to have Nathalie’s boutique next door. After school, Jeanne would go to Nathalie’s atelier—not to talk about clothes, but about boys and life—and a friendship was born.

Damas would occasionally be photographed for the brand and, a little later on, after she started to “become famous on the internet,” she knew that Nathalie’s involvement in her label would be essential. With the “same eye, the same sensibility, the same taste,” this dynamic duo basically concoct Jeanne’s perfect capsule wardrobe of 30 to 35 pieces every six months.

Despite Damas being “scared” of actually having too many clothes, she does reveal that her new, larger apartment in the Republique area of Paris features a walk-in wardrobe—“like Carrie Bradshaw, you know?”—and with Jacquemus as one of her good friends, plus fashion houses such as Miu Miu and Valentino keen to dress her, one could imagine even SJP feeling a pang of jealousy.

True to her pragmatic nature, however, Damas does adhere to biannual clear-outs, donating to a French charity, Emmaus, as well as redistributing wares to friends and family—her mother and sister being the ones who get first dibs. “Now that I have my brand, all my friends and my sister and my mum, we have all the same [items], so we have to call each other before to say, ‘Are you wearing the skirt?’”

Even with those measures in place, it’s not unheard of for Jeanne and her mother to be seen twinning on the outfit front. One particular Instagram image stays in my mind of the two wearing matching snug blue tops and high-waisted jeans—Damas tells me they really do share the very same look (often stealing each other’s clothes) and that her mother was her first major fashion memory.

“She was not working in fashion, but she was really stylish,” says Damas. “She doesn’t look like me—she’s blonde with curly hair—but I was so proud when she would get me from school when I was a kid because she was this strong woman always with a floral dress [on] with Sergio Rossi or Pierre Hardy shoes—heeled shoes—and she was really confident and smiley.” Funny, that does remind us of someone…

Since you'll probably be living in those jeans for the next few months, you're about to find out how to take them to the next level with this simple French girl styling trick.
