Jessica Alba's look is so simple, but it packs a punch. Apply a wash of champagne shadow all over your lids, making sure to blend out the edges so it looks natural and not harsh. Go in with an eyeliner crayon to create a diffused wing.

Peach eye shadow looks dreamy when you have warm undertones like Lana Condor. Opt for a semi-matte shade with a subtle shimmer, and use it all over the lid for a wash of neutral color. Top off the look with a sharp wing.

The fall beckons in one of the best holidays: Halloween. Other than the candy, which admittedly is one of my favorite things about this holiday, being able to dress up is something that brings me a great deal of joy. And while there’s no telling what or how this year’s festivities will look, that doesn’t mean we can’t get into the spirit to celebrate this year. If you’re still wondering, "What Halloween costume trends will come from this time?” I’m placing big bets that the biggest Halloween costume trend will come from one of the hobbies that have filled many people’s quarantine: binge-watching TV shows. 

Yes, I'm talking about costumes inspired by television’s most popular shows of the moment. Because let’s be real—we’ve been spending a copious amount of time with stylish television characters, have fallen in love with the costume designers behind breakout shows like Normal People, and have comfort in rewatching ’90s television shows, so why wouldn’t our Halloween costumes be inspired by them this year? If your Halloween costume tradition has always been to make a nod to a historical figure, then this costume idea is right up your alley (and more relevant than ever might I add). While at first glance, I was dubious about FX’s premiere of Mrs. America on Hulu, I found myself transfixed after the first episode. WHO: Arabella

WHAT:  Jeans, a T-shirt, and an interesting bomber jacket

Possibly one of the most talked-about shows of the year (for good reason) is HBO’s original series I May Destroy You is a must-watch for anyone who hasn’t gotten around to it yet. Directed, written, and starring Michael Coel, the show explored topics that can be scary (not Michael Cougar scary but based in real trauma) resulting in a show that will rock you to your core. If you're anything like me, you've spent years trying to figure out what your natural hair wants and needs. When I was younger, my mom took care of my hair, which typically involved twist-outs, the occasional hot comb, or a day off from school to head to the salon for cornrows or braids (a rite of passage for any Black girl at the time). When I hit high school, I begged her for a perm, which led to a continuous cycle of dying, frying, and chopping my extra-thick 4c hair on numerous occasions before I fully committed to it in its natural state.

My hair journey is common for many women of color. Going natural or simply maintaining your hair's natural texture is a process (as it should be). But no matter where you're at in your journey, we can all use a little guidance, and that's where a professional hairstylist comes in. Ahead, you'll hear from Marjorie Lightford—a celebrity hairstylist from the agency behind our former cover star, Issa Rae—on everything from misconceptions around Black hair to the different texture types and tips for transitioning your hair. But first, a little about her…

For those who aren't familiar with Texture Management, can you explain a little about the company and how you fit into that?

Texture Management was formed to fill the need for elite hair and makeup services tailored to performers' unique needs of color. I am one of their hair artists, specializing in hair color (certified through Redken). This allows me to provide whatever hairstyle (such as braids, cut, wigs, or smoothing) the client needs to complete the look from head to toe. Through Texture Management, I have styled hair for spec shoots, beauty shoots, red carpets, award shows, and more.

Most people outside of the Black community have little to no education about Black hair. What do you think is one of the biggest misconceptions and implicit biases held by wider society?

Honestly, I think most people have little to no education about hair outside of their own community. The bigger issue is that people do not understand curly hair and just how fragile some textures are within the curl community, regardless of race. Generally speaking, curly hair is the driest of any hair texture and needs constant love and nourishment. 

Curly hair thrives with natural oils and does not have to be shampooed and manipulated daily. Consequently, when styling curly hair, especially tighter textures, the styles should be preserved for longer than a day. 

What do you think are the biggest misconceptions that Black people themselves have about their own hair?

People of all races need to evaluate their hair and learn what products work best. For example, a volumizing shampoo is something that is not commonly used in the Black community. However, if you have oily hair that needs to be shampooed twice a week because your hair loses style and falls flat, a volumizing shampoo could do the trick. 

People with curly hair often choose a smoothing shampoo or a hydrating shampoo, which could actually make some curly textures flat and lifeless.

How would you say the industry has evolved in the past 10 years when it comes to natural hair? Do you think Hollywood and the fashion industry have become more accepting of it?

Over the past 10 years, relaxers have been deprioritized in the Black community. Other presumed less-harmful chemicals began to take their place, such as the keratin treatments. It was not until we learned about formaldehyde that clients and stylists began to back off from the keratin treatments. That signaled the start of the chemical-free craze. Everybody wanted to be natural but still get their hair straightened. The problem was that most people’s hair would not last through humidity or exercising. When they had to shampoo it naturally, they did not know what to do in terms of styling. Their hair had uneven textures and was just difficult to manage. From there began the big chop phase, removing all compromised ends that were not natural in texture.

For those opting out of the big chop, protective styles that allowed them to grow out their hair and remove compromised ends little by little were chosen. Today, most people in the Black community avoid using chemical straighteners but still struggle to manage their natural hair. As a result, wigs, weft extensions, and lace closures have made a tremendous rise in our community.

"To truly care for your natural hair, it has to become a lifestyle," Lightford says. This rings true for so many women of color who may not know where to start when they decide to start putting effort into their hair's health, whether they have type 3a or 4c. Can you explain the difference between the various porosities when it comes to haircare?

Porosity, as it relates to hair, refers to how well your hair is able to absorb and hold moisture. There are three categories: low, normal, and high.

Low porosity hair has tight cuticles and is resistant to receiving water and moisture. It does not absorb easily. One tip: Use alkaline products while hair is damp.

Normal porosity means your hair does not have a challenge absorbing moisture or holding shine. However, excessive heat styling and the use of other chemicals on the hair can change the normal porosity.

High porosity hair is like having a bunch of holes in your hair. While your hair easily absorbs moisture, it can also lose moisture just as fast. Protein treatments and apple cider vinegar work extremely well to help fill in the gaps and holes in the hair's cuticle layer.

How would you describe the texture types 3a through 4c, and are there any products that can make management easier?

3a: Loopy "S" curls that are big and loose. To define hair, twist the hair around the finger while wet and let dry.

3b: Springier curls that have the circumference of a sharpie. They also have shrinkage and tend to have a coarser texture. Products that protect against humidity and frizz work great. 

3c: Combination of curly and coily strands that are tightly coiled and experience the most shrinkage out of level 3. They are usually very dense strands, and their coils are voluminous and tight.

4a: Dense, springy coils with the circumference of a crochet needle. Use thicker natural products like shea butter.

4b: The curl is tighter and less defined—about a pen's circumference—with strands that range from fine and thin to wiry and coarse. Pre-treat with coconut oil before shampooing. 

4c: Similar to 4b but denser. Less defined and more shrinkage. Strands can be fine, thin, and soft to wiry and coarse. It is very fragile. Use a creamy leave-in to help with the distribution of other styling products. 

Although perms seem to be a thing of the past, there are still Black women who prefer this to natural hair. Can you let us in on what you should expect when going in for an appointment and how to maintain your hair's health after the treatment?

Getting a chemical relaxer in 2020 is just like eating at a fast-food chain that has been around for years. Most people choose not to do it, and if they go back to it, their body does not respond well. They do not make relaxers like they used to. Companies have chosen cheaper ingredients that are often more harmful. 

Should you choose to get a chemical relaxer, it is important to see someone who does a lot of them and requires you to get deep conditions regularly. I would also find a seasoned stylist who has been doing hair since the '90s or early 2000s.

How would you define what a protective style is?

A protective style is anything that wraps your hair and seals your ends and can be kept for at least two weeks. One of the best things to do before getting a protective style is to get a haircut, removing all or most of your split ends. This way, when you remove the protective style, your hair has length and fullness from roots to ends.

Protective Styles to Try

Cornrows result from a three-strand braid that has hair added to each strand after completing one rotation sequence. The outcome is a raised braid that is typically very close to the scalp. 

A sew-in results from braiding your natural hair in a cornrow style and hand-stitching weft extensions on top of the braids.

Jumbo twists are large sections of hair divided up into two strands and wrapped in the same direction.

Faux locs are installed by twisting or braiding the real hair and then wrapping additional hair around the shaft of the braid/twist.

Box braids are individual plaits that are usually divided by small, squared-off parts, or boxes, and have extension hair added to them for protection, length, and longevity of style.

Many women nowadays are product aficionados when it comes to their natural hair. Still, through trial and error, I’ve learned that the tools you use are equally as important as the products you use, whether your goal is retaining length or just maintaining a healthy head of hair. These are the tools you need.

To define curls and get a smooth blowout.

To detangle hair or comb out curls.

To define your curls' natural texture or to give volume to your hair.

To protect your hair from drying out at night.

For precision parting in hair or hair coloring.

For women who are thinking of transitioning to their natural texture, what tips would you give them?

Anyone who is thinking about transitioning to their natural texture should consult a natural-hair specialist. The transition is different for everybody, so do not compare your experience to others' and vice versa. Find what works for you.

Lastly, through your work, how do you hope it contributes to changing Black haircare and the way Black hair is perceived?

I want my work to show that healthy hair is good hair. It is not about the texture or diameter of your curl but about giving each head of hair what it needs to prosper. Curly hair is limitless, and I want to showcase its versatility by bringing various coloring, cutting, and styling techniques rarely seen on curly textures. Curly hair is truly multidimensional and does not have to be altered (textured-wise) to fit in. It is beautiful just the way it is.

When I enter the West Hollywood studio space where our February cover shoot is taking place, my attention is immediately drawn to Issa Rae sitting poised with impeccable posture in front of the camera. For someone wearing an extravagant concoction of baby-pink feathers, fuchsia satin, and enormous heart-shaped crystal earrings, she had a rather serious expression on her face. "You wear stuff like that and you wonder why,” she jokingly admits to me later. "For the ’gram, that’s it.”

Rae sinks into the cracked leather sofa beside me, having swapped the fluffy Prabal Gurung ensemble I first saw her in for a more laid-back athleisure look consisting of black leggings, a T-shirt, and sneakers, but she maintains her poised posture. We’re 11 days away from the end of the year, and while everyone in my orbit is recapping the past 365 of their lives in carefully constructed galleries on Instagram, Rae is racing full steam ahead into 2020. She’s just wrapped production for the much-anticipated fourth season of her award-winning HBO series Insecure, out April 12 (mark your calendars), and will be starring in two back-to-back feature films this spring, with more projects already in the pipeline. This past fall, she inked a deal with Atlantic Records to launch her record label, Raedio, and became the co-owner of the black-owned and -operated Hilltop Coffee shop in her hometown of Inglewood. Oh, and did we mention she also owns two production companies? We all like to subtly flex about how busy we are, but Issa’s been busy. "It feels like a lot,” she says anxiously of the coming year, "but I’m just excited for people to see what I’ve been up to.”

She’s particularly excited for people to see her two new films—The Photograph, a heartfelt drama, and The Lovebirds, a romantic comedy slash murder mystery—the former of which shows little trace of Insecure’s Issa, the funny, self-conscious 20-something we all know and relate to so hard. That character will always be part of her. The series is, after all, loosely based on Rae’s semi-autobiographical web series The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl, but she’s ready to show us just how multifaceted the real Issa Rae really is.

"I want to try different things and see what I can do,” she muses. "I don’t want to just play myself, so I want to be able to experiment. Some of the things that I have on the slate to actually act in are very different. I don’t want to get caught in a comfort zone. I don’t want anybody to be able to put me in a box.” 

The first step outside her comfort zone comes in The Photograph, a romantic drama that grapples with love, loss, grief, and family and features LaKeith Stanfield (Get Out, Uncut Gems), fittingly out this Valentine’s Day. But, Rae confesses, "I think people are just expecting me to be funny, and the character just lost her mom, so she’s going through it. Obviously, there are elements of humor within the movie, but that’s not the driving part of the character, which is new for me because I do lean on humor. It’s been a defense mechanism for a lot of my life. That’s my go-to, I guess, because my comfort zone is humor. So to not be able to lean on that in this film was interesting.”

Over the course of our hour-long conversation, I learned that this tendency to challenge herself is how Issa operates best. Expansion, growth, self-discovery—these have always been her MO, but right now is an especially charged time for the Emmy-nominated actress, producer, and writer. She shared candidly, "This year will determine whether or not I have longevity on a particular side.” In that moment, I could sense this vulnerability bubbling up inside her. "If these movies do well,” she continued with more urgency, "then I’ll have more opportunities. If they don’t, I might not. But I’m not a person who puts all my eggs in one basket. I have too many baskets.”

Continuing Insecure. Starring in back-to-back feature films. Launching a record label. Co-owning a coffee shop. Operating two production companies. Yeah, that’s a lot of baskets. What motivates a person to branch out in so many directions, I wondered. Are there moments when she bites off more than she can chew? Sure, but it all comes down to her objective to lift up those around her. "There’s a lot that I love to do,” she shared, her voice shifting into self-assuredness. "So I love being behind the scenes. I love producing. I love writing. I love business. We have a new record label, and even there, crafting other artists in an area where I’m weak—I can’t sing. I’m not a rapper. I’m not an artist, but to be able to work with people who have that talent and to lend what I know to help their careers is very exciting.”

Raedio seeks to connect musical artists with film and TV projects, helping creators in one industry land opportunities in another. If you’ve been watching Insecure since day one, you know just how invested Rae is in the music world. Her Peabody Award–winning HBO series has featured independent and Los Angeles–based artists such as Saweetie, SZA, Blood Orange, and so many more, thanks in part to the Solange Knowles–curated soundtrack and Rae’s passion for spotlighting promising young talent.

When she launched Insecure in 2016, she took care to compose a team chock-full of creatives. Insecure is Insecure because of the producers, the cast, and the costume designer, all the way down to the soundtrack and the designers Issa wears in the show. It’s a show full of discovery. If you wanted a showcase of some of both the most prominent and on-the-rise talent in their respective fields, Insecure is it. A notable new addition to the set is Shiona Turini, a former fashion editor turned costume designer and all-around industry force. Turini was brought to the show in the middle of the last season, but the upcoming fourth season, Rae beamed, is where she really shines. "I trust her a lot,” she tells me. Turini has introduced Rae to countless new designers already, many of whom are black designers and some African designers too. "And I just love what she brings to the show because wardrobe plays such a huge part of these characters’ identities, and she understands that. She’s very in tune with the evolution of certain characters and what we’re going for.”

Rae’s mission to provide platforms to the people around her isn’t something that only occurs on the set of Insecure. It’s the driving force behind all of her endeavors, and the latest way she’s manifested this goal is by bringing to life the most democratic space of them all: a community-first coffee shop in her very own neighborhood of Inglewood. She tells me the decision to become a co-owner of Hilltop Coffee was immediate and something she desperately needed as a young creative who used to do all her writing in coffee shops. "Being in those spaces where you get to just see other people working—people who look just like you,” she muses, "there’s just nothing more empowering than that. That’s why I wanted to get involved. And then just the natural networking that happens there… I think a lot of these spaces—I think about Soho House or The Wing—these are all spaces that are meant to bring like-minded or, I would say, like-statused people together. We just don’t get those in our community.”

Rae, I’m learning, is a yes woman. But the fact that, say, she doesn’t possess prior experience owning a coffee shop is hardly a deterrent. She says yes first and then figures out the logistics. "Oh, yeah. You’re right,” she says, mimicking her realization that she won’t always be able to run things by herself. "I’m not going to be grinding the beans and stuff. Cool.”

Grinding coffee beans may not be at the top of her résumé, but being a business owner is front and center. She helms two of her own production companies—Issa Rae Productions, which focuses on projects written by or starring her, and ColorCreative, co-founded with Insecure producer Deniese Davis, which works to give visibility to and create opportunities for women and minority film and TV writers. ColorCreative is her passion. When telling me about the work she does there to put emerging voices on the map, a mix of pride and passion takes over her. It’s immediately clear that the studio is the soul of her work. It’s personal—Rae herself was a young black girl from L.A.’s south side with dreams of her own—but it’s also political. There’s no denying that in Hollywood, white talent is the default.

Sure, we've seen blockbusters like Crazy Rich Asians and Black Panther blow it out of the water, but they continue to be the exception, not the rule. According to UCLA’s most recent Hollywood Diversity Report, film writers of color are underrepresented five to one, making up just 7.8% of their industry.

"Since 2014, we've been discovering underrepresented writers and giving them various platforms or helping them get staffed, helping them get representation,” she explains. "And we’ve had so much success there just in terms of putting them on the radar for the industry. Getting them representation is no small feat so that they can get more jobs. That’s what I ultimately want my legacy to be.”

Actor, writer, producer, music industry aficionado, coffee shop owner. As she continues to take on new acting roles and add to her ever-growing string of hyphenates, I’m convinced that there’s no project too intimidating and no role too foreign for Rae. If, by this April, she makes us laugh in Insecure, makes our hearts swell in The Photograph, and keeps us on edge in The Lovebirds, then I can only imagine what else she has up her sleeve in 2020—let alone the rest of the decade.
