I've been a beauty editor for 10 years, so I've heard and seen it all. I've researched almost every trendy ingredient, product, and technique. I've tested new treatments. I've seen social media become swamped with skincare advice from so many sources. Content creators! Brand founders! That old college classmate who insists she's discovered the secret to perfect skin that just so happens to be a serum that she sells in her spare time!

There's been one universal truth that's guided me through it all: The only way to block out the noise and find effective skincare advice is by going to the experts. I'm talking about qualified individuals who understand the science of skin and have years, if not decades, of hands-on practice working with it aka dermatologists and aestheticians.

There's no shortage of incredible experts to turn to, but lately, I've been dying to talk all things skincare with Ildi Pekar, licensed aesthetician, brand founder, and head of NYC's Ildi Pekar Wellness Studio. She's been a leading skin expert for over 20 years and is often referred to as the "supermodel aesthetician" because her client roster has included the glowing, sculpted faces of Miranda Kerr, Irina Shayk, and Ashley Park. Recently, I was finally able to ask her my burning questions, and boy did she deliver answers. Ahead, see some of Pekar's best skin advice, from the power of honey-infused products to the "piano fingers" facial technique.

First, what is your skincare philosophy?

I was born and raised in Budapest, Hungary, where I learned from a young age how important it is to care for your skin and keep it healthy. My philosophy is simple: Every treatment should be completely customized to your skin type, your lifestyle, and your needs.

Some of our clients have been with us for over 20 years—coming weekly—and they never receive the same treatment twice. I believe in being honest and building trust. When someone is on my table, they know they are in knowledgeable and caring hands.

We are always exploring new techniques and innovations, but we also respect traditional, time-tested methods. Combining the new with the old is where the magic happens. The goal is simple: to make you feel good, look good, and bring out the very best in your skin.

What's one thing you consistently see people getting wrong about skincare?

The biggest mistake I see is people chasing quick results. It happens all the time—too many products, too many treatments all at once. Skin is a living organ, and it doesn't respond well to that kind of overload. It needs rhythm, not a revolving door. Consistency is where the real magic happens, and the earlier you start respecting and caring for your skin, the more it will reward you over time.

Are there any specific ingredients you love or that you wish more people used in their routines?

Honey. Always honey. I am and will forever be a honey girl.

Honey has been used for thousands of years, and it still doesn't get the credit it deserves. It's antibacterial, deeply hydrating, full of enzymes and antioxidants, and it's endlessly versatile. You can mix it, mask with it, layer it. It belongs in everyone's cabinet. It's one of those ancient ingredients that modern skincare keeps trying to replace, and there's just no need.

On the flip side, are there any trendy ingredients you think are overhyped?

Of course—trends come and go. That's the nature of this industry. Right now, there are a few ingredients everywhere: PDRN (salmon DNA), exosomes, and NAD. Let me be clear. They're not bad ingredients. In fact, they can be very powerful when used correctly. The issue is not the ingredient itself; it's how it's being used and marketed.

These are highly sophisticated, expensive ingredients. They require proper sourcing, careful formulation, and very specific storage conditions. So when I see a salmon DNA serum for $9, it raises a red flag. It's often misleading, sometimes even mislabeling, and it creates unrealistic expectations for clients.

I also see formulations that are simply not well-balanced—too heavy, too sticky, or layered with too many actives. This can lead to irritation, breakouts, and a compromised skin barrier.

It's not about avoiding trends completely. It's about understanding them, respecting the science behind them, and using them in a thoughtful, professional way.

You're the supermodel aesthetician! Do you have any tips or tricks for replicating the supermodel glow at home?

First rule: Don't try anything new the night before a big event. Your skin should feel safe, not surprised. The night before, do a gentle exfoliation to smooth and refine. I love Sanitas Brightening Pads ($74). Then follow with a light hydrating mask, and let your skin rest.

In the morning, I don't cleanse. I want to keep all that hydration in the skin. I go straight in with a toner and really saturate the skin so it's slightly damp. While your skin is still damp, apply a lightweight serum—something gel based, never heavy oils. Now, this is where the magic happens. Take an ice cube and glide it over your skin in circular motions until your skin feels cold. The cold helps reduce inflammation, tighten the appearance of pores, boost circulation, and wake everything up. It instantly makes the skin look fresher and more even.

Once your skin is cold, go in with your favorite moisturizer and tap it in. Don't rub. I call it "piano fingers." Tapping helps push the product deeper, stimulates circulation, and gives that subtle lifted, plumped effect. (I'm sure you've heard of hot-and-cold treatments or fire and ice. This is a simple version of that at home.) The result? Skin that feels tighter, lifted, hydrated, and glowing. Give it a try. The result might be temporary, but it works every time.

Let's talk about seasonal skincare. A lot of people like to adjust their skincare routine with the seasons. Do you think this is necessary? If so, what would you suggest transitioning to for spring and summer specifically?

Your skin doesn't behave the same in January as it does in July. In the summer, everything should feel lighter. Your skin is exposed to heat and humidity, and it needs to breathe. What felt rich and comforting in the winter can start to feel heavy and congesting now. This is when I love bringing in vitamin C. It gives you that extra layer of antioxidant protection, especially when you're spending more time in the sun. It just makes sense.

If you're prone to dark spots or uneven pigmentation, [there are] two ingredients I keep coming back to. First, tranexamic acid is still my top pick. It's effective, it's reliable, and unlike a lot of brightening actives, it carries zero photosensitivity risk. Use it morning or night. Azelaic acid is another one I love for the same reason. It quietly does the work without making your skin sun-reactive. Day or night, it plays well.

SPF… I know not everyone loves it, but now is the perfect time to find one you actually enjoy wearing. The right SPF makes all the difference.

Outside of products, do you have any tips or tricks for achieving great skin in the spring and summer via lifestyle habits, techniques, etc.?

Spring and summer skin is really about letting go. The skin doesn't need more. It needs a reset. A simple seasonal deep cleanse can do more than layers of products ever will. Even a gentle peel—if done right—can feel like a quiet refresh rather than a treatment.

Somewhere along the way, "chemical peel" became a scary phrase. People picture redness, peeling skin, and hiding indoors for a week. That was then. Modern peels have evolved so much that you can walk out looking like you just had a really good facial—a little brightness, smoother texture, that gorgeous glow.

This time of year, it makes sense. Winter leaves skin dull and thick in a way no moisturizer quite fixes. A peel clears that away and gives you a cleaner slate going into spring. Your serums absorb better, and your skin feels easier to manage. It doesn't have to be aggressive to work.

But honestly, it's the small rituals that stay with me. Sometimes, I make tea—chamomile, ginger, or turmeric, whatever I feel drawn to. [I] freeze it and use it as an ice cube in the morning. It wakes up the skin.

If you're at all familiar with French style, you probably have noticed by now that the well-dressed residents of France favor the classics. That's not to say they don't try trends, but the most popular trends among the French tend to be more timeless. One of those is a denim color trend I repeatedly spot on chic French women: cream-color jeans. As I'm sure you know, flip-flops are very much "in" for summer 2025—and not just with swimsuits. More and more celebrities flock to Formula One races each year, with the Miami Grand Prix, which took place this weekend, among the season's most popular events. Over the three-day event, celebrities like A$AP Rocky, Madelyn Cline, Roger Federer, and Emily Ratajkowski all made their way to the Miami International Autodrome in their best race-day attire. But the celeb with the most interesting and unexpected take on F1 style was, without a shadow of a doubt, Irina Shayk. 

On Sunday, Shayk shared several photos with her 21.8 million Instagram followers with the caption "F1" followed by a black heart emoji. Knowing that every out-of-style trend will eventually make its way back again, I held on to my trusty over-the-knee boots even after the style was dubbed "out" a few years ago. I was holding out hope that a handful of celebrities would dare to wear the controversial shoe trend again one day, catalyzing its comeback. And it's a good thing I did because, just as I predicted, over-the-knee boots are heading for a comeback. 

Whereas I used to go months without spotting a pair of the extra-tall boots on anyone, let alone a celebrity, I've recently been seeing them everywhere. For a pre-BAFTAs event hosted by Chanel, Emma Watson wore a pair from the almost sold-out collaboration between Jimmy Choo and Mugler. Following the award show, Pam & Tommy star Lily James was seen wearing a mint-green pair of Roberto Cavalli boots to an after-party. And that was only in the last 72 hours or so. More advocates of the trend include Irina Shayk, Kim Kardashian, and Dua Lipa.

But it's not just celebrities. During fashion month, nearly every designer included at least one pair of over-the-knee boots in their fall/winter 2022 collections, from Bottega Veneta and Max Mara to Michael Kors and Khaite. Street style stars outside of the shows also frequented the style, including Caroline Daur and Courtney Trop. Suffice to say, over-the-knee boots are back in a major way, whether you were ready for their return or not.

Ah, leather moto jackets—the model-off-duty staple of the 2010s. We never thought they'd go anywhere but the unthinkable happened and they basically disappeared from the backs of models, celebrities, influencers, and everyone else in recent years. That said, at the risk of sounding too dramatic, they are a wardrobe staple for many as opposed to a very trendy item that can easily look dated.

With this context in mind, we have something to report: Leather moto jackets have been slowly but surely inching their way back to relevance. We've seen some clues as of late that prove it. Irina Shayk, with her always perfect model-off-duty style just wore one in NYC, and just yesterday our Editor in Chief Kat Collings dropped into one of our Slack channels to say "The moto jacket is due for a comeback." (Screenshot below.) She also pointed out that the always directional Khaite, for one, is doing their part to make it a thing. All signs point to moto jackets coming back from the dead, in our humble opinion. If there's one thing I'm sure of this year, it's that I am obsessed with the celebrity style that has transpired in 2020—especially the shoes and handbags. A style icon I have absolutely fallen in love with this year, Dua Lipa, is always stepping out in unexpected pairing that just works. Last month, I tapped a celebrity stylist to let me in on a Hollywood style secret. I asked her which denim brands celebs actually buy for themselves, as opposed to pieces that are gifted or chosen by stylists. For this story, I wanted to continue the theme and find out which leggings reign supreme, so I did a ton of my own research and came up with five brands that celebrities love to wear while off duty.

If you want to wear sweatpants outside but you also want to look like you tried, this is for you. The always directional Irina Shayk was out walking in NYC this week, as she often is, wearing a look that's likely to set an outfit trend. It included a velour Skims outfit which consisted of a pair of joggers that one might just automatically think to pair with sneakers. But not Irina Shayk. She did the unexpected and instead chose a pair of knee-high boots, and I have to say, it works.

For the most streamlined look, the trick is to choose a pair of sweatpants that are on the slim side, and a pair of boots that are in the same color family as the sweats and have a wide shaft. You could dress it up with a blazer or down with a hoodie or sweater—whatever the vibe you're going for (and sorry to sound cliché here), the best thing you can do is wear the unexpected outfit combination with confidence and relish in the fact that you're so much more comfortable than all of the people wearing jeans with their knee boots.

Next up: Katie Holmes wore the sweatpants trend that's suddenly a thing.

Like clockwork, every fall, celebrities bust out their Ugg boots and simultaneously help to create an Ugg boot buying frenzy among the rest of us. And what makes this especially noteworthy this year is that there's a new classic Ugg boot style in town, and they're highly covetable. Like Joan Smalls and Emily Ratajkowski before here, Irina Shayk just wore the new Ugg Classic Ultra Mini Boots while out and about in NYC.

The boots have a low shaft, making them even easier to wear than the Ugg Classic and Classic Mini boots we already know and love. Shayk opted to wear them with both bike shorts and leggings this week (along with a new Ugg sherpa jacket), in the bold hot pink iteration. And if neutrals are more your vibe, there are plenty of those too. The boots are selling like crazy, including the hot pink ones which are currently completely sold out (hopefully just temporarily), so you might want to secure your pair.

Supermodel Irina Shayk dresses exactly how you'd expect a supermodel to dress: with confidence and an eye for what will capture the attention of all of us non-supermodels out there. It's weird to start thinking about fall outfits when we barely wore any summer ones this year, might as well accept it. Making the summer-to-fall transition seamlessly is quite the challenge, so we'll be sure to share as many outfit ideas as we can, to help make it a little easier. So let's get to it.

Model Irina Shayk may be Russian, but she's really embraced the cool NYC-girl aesthetic, as evidenced yesterday for a walk around the city. Model Irina Shayk is always thoughtful with her outfits, even when there isn't really anywhere to go. Lately, she's been wearing plenty of casual, chic outfits for walks around New York City. And one of her latest is super simple, but it has the potential to be one of the biggest outfit trends of summer. 

Shayk combined one of last summer's biggest trends that's still around (bike shorts) with one of this summer's biggest trends (oversize button-down shirts), and it's pretty much the only outfit combination I want to wear right now. I prefer wearing bike shorts with something oversize to provide a little more coverage, so a loose-fitting button-down is the perfect thing to wear with them, in my opinion (especially if you don't want to look like you're going for a jog).

Next up, the most comfortable summer trends of 2020.

It's not every day you find yourself interviewing a supermodel in Italy, but that's exactly what I was doing last week. (Do I sound obnoxious yet?) Intimissimi invited me to the brand's hometown of Verona to attend its annual lingerie fashion show, so I got to interview brand ambassador Irina Shayk shortly before she took her front-row seat at the event. Of course, I took the opportunity to ask her about all things lingerie. 

Considering that she's been modeling lingerie for over a decade—beginning when Intimissimi discovered her 12 years ago in Moscow—it's no surprise that she'd pick up a few tips along the way. "Definitely choose a bra that is the right size," Shayk told me." I have tried to get a bra that is a little smaller because it gives me a better push-up, but at the end of the day, that doesn't work because you have to find the right fit and shape for you." 

I also asked Shayk about her go-to lingerie basics—keep scrolling down for her answers. And when I pressed further about more daring lingerie trends, Shayk said that she's open-minded when it comes to just about every trend. "The funny part is I would wear everything," Shayk responded when I gave her a list of trends, including garter belts, granny panties, and sheer bras. Wireless Triangle Bras

"A wireless triangle bra is very comfortable to travel in," Shayk told us. "You can take it from day to night; you don't have to change. It could be lace or silk."

G-Strings

"In a G-string, you can wear a tight skirt or jeans and you feel sexy," Shayk told me. "You don't have to worry about the lines. I would go with black, white, and nude. I've found myself sometimes waking up and thinking Let me put on a bright G-string under my sweatpants to feel sexy." 

High-Waisted Underwear

"You can definitely do high-waisted underwear to give you a little more support. Or you can even wear granny panties when you go to bed; I like to wear something very comfortable to bed."
