I've seen them styled with tank tops and baby tees, which I wear all the time during the warm weather. While I'm still trying to uphold my no-buy New Year's resolution, I couldn't help but shop for a few skirts.

I'm on a no-buy streak to save money, and build a solid wardrobe filled with pieces I know I'll keep forever. Fringe has always been a fun addition to an outfit for me, especially if my look is pretty basic. With summer just around the corner (finally!), now is the perfect time to take a close look at the season’s most in-demand piece—the dress. Summer is when we want to switch out jeans, knitwear and suede layers (thank you for your service) in favour of something a little more swishy and fun. So, I’ve taken it upon myself to evaluate the current dress climate.

As a fashion editor, I find myself routinely poring over files of runway images, inspecting street style snaps, analysing Instagram, crowdsourcing ideas from colleagues and fashion friends and looking back at archival photography to identify which key styles are coming through in the most meaningful ways; and I’ve focused my most recent efforts on summer dresses.

Dresses remain a year-round wardrobe staple, but of course, they really shine in summer. The summer dress comes in so many guises that there's always at least one to suit your style, and this year's lineup is truly reflective of that. With this in mind, and with an abundance of sources at my disposal, I’ve set out to create the ultimate guide to dresses in 2025.

There’s a noticeable wave of small, independent designers slowly but surely gaining cult status. Hailing from the British capital, homegrown brands such as Peachy Den and Susamusa have become shorthand for cool London style, tapping into '90s and '00s Brit-pop culture.

"I’m a very nostalgic person," says Isabella Weatherby, Peachy Den’s founder and creative director. "I have an obsession with looking back through my childhood clothes, memory boxes and diaries, hoping that something will spark an idea." It's no wonder then that starlets of today, such as Olivia Dean, Dua Lipa, Raye and Beabadoobee, have been spotted donning the brand's dresses and separates, adding to their viral appeal.

Meanwhile, for that whimsical, English-country-garden aesthetic, Kitri Studios, Sister Jane and Damson Madder have become go-to brands for those in the know. Statement fabrics, lace trims and bow detailing along with charming, characterful designs define their collections, and, in particular, their best-selling dresses.

"Storytelling is an essential part of the design process at Sister Jane," says Bernice Arriagada, senior designer at the brand. "Every collection has a narrative behind it, and each dress is influenced by this. Inspiration comes in many different forms for us, but vintage references are always our go-to. Whether it’s for a celebration, a weekend getaway or just because, [our customer] wants her dress to be a moment."

Haeni Kim, founder of Kitri Studios, has a similar ethos. "I think we all want to look and feel amazing in a dress—something easy, comfortable and versatile. I love wearing a dress that makes me feel cool and feminine at the same time, and because you’re one and done."

Why the '90s Feel So Now

It is no surprise that, once again, the red-carpet stylings of the 1990s have come back around to influence the most in-demand runway designers of today. When you think of the '90s, icons such as Kate Moss, Sarah Jessica Parker, Halle Berry, Naomi Campbell and Gwyneth Paltrow quickly come to mind, and when studying their wardrobe choices for award ceremonies, parties and evening events, there is a distinct thread woven throughout.

These nostalgic style muses favoured slinky dresses cut on the bias or straight column styles with very little embellishment in pared-back, minimalist tones. It figures, then, that the cult dress brands of today are taking note and are bringing those styles into the now. Quiet-luxury titans The Row and Khaite, as well as Stockholm-born Toteme, are the fashion-person favourites, picking up where pioneers Calvin Klein, Jil Sander and Prada left off and providing palette cleansers in dress form for those who seek the simple life (and wardrobe).

As we move into the summer months, our need for escapism grows. With that comes a desire for travel, or at least a taste of the heat, and where better to find it than Australia? I’ve noted that many luxury retailers are snapping up Australian designers and bringing them to the UK shores, and the fashion set simply can't get enough.

Names such as Christopher Esber, Zimmerman and Aje have tapped into the demand for romantic, airy dresses—the sort that dare to bare a little bit of skin—for a fair few seasons now, whilst IYKYK labels St. Agni, DISSH and Posse offer more casual iterations with a focus on simple shapes and single-toned hues for that easy, unfussy Aussie vibe.

"When you think about the designers that have emerged from the Australian fashion landscape, the real clear throughline that tethers them all together is a sense of ease," notes Who What Wear’s SEO writer, Ava Gilchrist, who hails from Sydney. "These are clothes that can speak for themselves and don’t rely on heavy styling to make an impact. Shapes are breezy, fabrics are light and the energy is high. Making a Comeback: The Kaftan

If, like me, you have binged every season of The White Lotus and want to add a little slice of the fabulous looks worn by the characters into your wardrobe, then look no further, because the kaftan is this season’s elevated answer to the throw-on dress. Wide, floaty and often sumptuous, it's the kind of garment that goes hand in hand with bursts of bright, swirling colour and pattern, making it ideal for holidays and high-humidity dressing.

Heritage luxury fashion houses such as Pucci, Missoni and Hérmes have been showcasing kaftan-style dresses on the runway for many seasons, whilst high-end swimwear labels Johanna Ortiz, La DoubleJ and Melissa Odabash are hot on their tails with contemporary takes on the theme.

Stylist Allison Bornstein declared 2025 "a kaftan summer!" on Instagram recently, showcasing a carousel of looks from the likes of Dakota Johnson, the Olsen twins, Diane Von Furstenberg and London’s very own Twiggy to prove her point. Technique to Try: Dress Layering

A styling technique I’ve spotted bubbling up in fashion-conscious cities all over Europe—chiefly Copenhagen, Paris and Milan–is the art of layering dresses over—well, anything! Tops, jeans, trousers and even skirts, on first thought, you may feel like this is overwrought, fussy and difficult to execute, but on further inspection and when broken down into smaller parts, it can look chic and effortless.

For a grown-up '70s-inspired look, team an all-over lace, floral or flouncy dress over classic blue jeans, then max out on jewellery, oversized sunglasses and touches of suede. For a more minimalist approach, opt for a napkin-style dress with delicate broderie anglaise draped over straight-cut silky trousers, or for a more playful, Pinterest-approved vibe, try a puffball minidress with a contrasting pattern or brightly coloured bottoms. This trend is ripe for experimentation and allows for endless possibilities to shop your own wardrobe. For runway inspo, Chloé, Coach and Chanel have you covered—literally.

The Shade of the Season: Butter Yellow

Butter yellow is the sweet shade that has us all utterly transfixed for summer, and its popularity doesn't seem to be waning. The sunny hue gained cult status when Kendall Jenner wore what I would argue is the dress of the year at Coachella: Proenza Schouler’s now aptly-named Kendall dress. Consisting of a figure-hugging bodice, scoop neckline and drop waist, flared midi skirt, the sell-out style is now only available via a waiting list.

But don't fret; many other brands have also tapped into this delectable dress colour trend, including Staud, Dôen and Taller Marmo. The soft tone makes for a great wedding-guest dress option, so long as you don’t veer too light. What's notable about this trend is that it works best when there's very little pattern, flair or fuss. Just let the colour do the talking.

Summer's Best-Seller: Nobody’s Child

It’s official: we're back in the era of the polka dot. Trends are fickle and fads come and go, but there are key styles and patterns which, whenever they come back around, remind us why we adored them in the first place. Right now, we're falling back in love with spots, dots and polkas. Natalie Munro, Who What Wear’s news writer, agrees. "Whilst I wouldn’t classify polka-dot dresses as a trend in the traditional sense, they're certainly having a moment right now." If you still need convincing, just ask Julia Roberts, Sydney Sweeney and Olivia Rodrigo. When stylish celebs are giving polka dots the green light, you know you're onto a winner.

The perennial pattern is peaking this summer, and one brand can't seem to keep its offering in stock. Enter Nobody’s Child and its best-selling style, the Felicity Midi Dress. Available in white, black and now a trendy chocolate brown—plus a new puffball silhouette—the dress has had many restocks so far this season, and is available in sizes from 4 to 18.

Jody Plows, Nobody’s Child CEO, muses on the success of the dress. "Polka dots are truly timeless. As a print, they’re eye-catching without being attention-seeking, and there are so many ways to wear them," she says. But why is the Felicity in particular flying? "With adjustable and detachable straps, she can be worn either as a bandeau or with perfect-fitting spaghetti straps if you want that extra support. The cut is also designed to fit the body in a specific way, with pleating that runs all over the bodice. From day to night, the secret to Felicity’s success is that she’s so easy to wear," says Plows.

Have you come across a certain effortlessly cool content creator applying their makeup in a sun-soaked field in the British countryside, hanging off the side of a boat, or in the middle of a busy bus on her way to and from appointments? Then you might have experienced the quirky, high-energy magic of Emily Wood. Over the past few years, this on-the-go beauty lover has captured our attention and views with her fast-paced and artistic take on makeup tutorials. Whether Wood is scribbling on her cheek, forehead, and nose with what resembles a colored pencil (it's definitely an eyeliner) or creating an eye shadow look with four ultra-pigmented shades, you can bet the finished result will be as picturesque as the woman making it happen.

Now that a sibling of hers has graced our screens on HBO's The White Lotus season three, Wood is feeling even more grateful for the flexibility of her craft and how it's inspired other beauty enthusiasts to think of their daily makeup routine as a way to play with color and texture. We caught up with Wood to learn more about the inspiration that fuels her creativity, her top products, and her advice for anyone hoping to follow in her footsteps.

Meet Emily Wood: Makeup Artist and Content Creator

You describe yourself as a "face decorator" in your TikTok bio, which taps into your artistic approach to makeup. Have you always been drawn to color and organic shapes, and why do you prefer applying products with your hands rather than a brush or Beautyblender?

I feel very intuitive with makeup and worry about sounding quite cheesy in earnest, but my approach to art in school felt natural. I grew up loving taking the imperfect approach, textures, and going into stationery shops at the weekend. It's very specific and my own type of nerdy! I've always been drawn to very scribbly, imperfect things.

Now, it feels quite metaphorical. … As someone who struggles with keeping a routine, resonates with someone who has ADHD, and is quite a messy person, I see it as something beautiful. From a really young age in art, I always went for textures, and my pigments were really messy. Those are still the types of paintings and art pieces that I'm touched by. With my makeup, I don't know… I feel like I just know what to do!

I layer [makeup products] like you would layer art on a sheet of paper. I just do it, and I don't really have a plan of what I'd like to create. I just pop things in a bag and go outside. I think there's something so beautiful and powerful about the fact I do it outside because I have to use what I've got, and it stimulates me in such a nice way, disrupting me from my neuroses because I have to immerse myself in my work. It's made me extremely creative!

I'm also dyslexic, so problem-solving is my forte. I'm good at problem-solving in a crisis. On a much smaller scale, I can figure things out and have to teach myself how to work with my brain in a way that others didn't relate to. At school, I didn't learn the same way my peers did. The way I learn is so visual, and that's why art was so important for me. There were no rules, and it was all about feeling and self-expression.

You're the definition of a true makeup artist! Whenever I watch your content, it's art, from the way products are applied to the skin with your hands to the act of doing it outside. Where do you look for inspiration?

Yes! On the odd occasion that I do use [brushes], people in the comments are always like, "Wait what?" I didn't think it was something I was doing that much until I went back while editing and saw that, and it's so freeing! I generally don't follow trends and struggle when I have to work closely with others and give quotes to publications about my favorite ones since I don't have any. It's taken me a while to accept that about myself, and I know that's okay!

From such a young age, I have watched my mum and nana apply makeup. They never go without flush across their cheeks and nose! My mum always wears a frosted pink lip with an iridescence and brown lip liner. It's all I've ever watched! I take inspiration from watching both of them do their makeup. There's a lot of neurodiversity, and they're very creative. I'm also inspired by my friends, like Milena. The way she thinks and puts things together really moves me.

As a makeup artist, I crave connection and telling stories that are truthful and honest. It's challenging for me to do certain things that come with makeup artistry, like being on set and working with talent, because, while we're all expected to be the best version of yourself, there's the expectation to be happy all the time in these spaces for the benefit of others. It's the paradox where it forces me to get out of my head, but there's also so much that goes unspoken in my stream of consciousness.

I'm really happy that I've managed to create a career for myself that means I'm alone a lot with creative freedom. It gets me outside on even my worst days. I feel thankful because it shielding me from rumination and intrusive thoughts, which is really useful. I get to say no to things! My little stick brain needs stimulation and autonomy. It's become even more important [with] my sister's career recently. I'm happy I get to channel my interests through my work and have creative freedom.

I was surprised by how many people didn't know you and Aimee Lou are siblings! I'm so excited to hear that you've drawn inspiration from the creative women in your family (including the types of products you wear). Can you tell me more about your makeup favorites?

I also love using a bright, colorful palette! Lately, it's been Anastasia Beverly Hills' face and body palettes, which means their powder pigments are so powerful that [they give] someone like me, who likes to layer, that intense finish. I'm constantly dipping one brush into them to really pack it on and then using a clean brush to go around and diffuse my eye shadow.

I like to get a cream product and apply that like you would use a primer in art so there's something for the powder products to stick to. Whenever I'm doing my skin and wearing foundation, I'll wear something matte that's quite intense because I want to lift, highlight, and brighten. Then, I'll put my powder over it in a way that's almost iridescent but works on my skin tone.

There's definitely something almost retro in the way you do your makeup, which is a big different from the ultra-dewy, no-makeup makeup looks we've been seeing coming in and out of style over the past few years.

I don't use coverage. For an area I'd like to be lifted, I'll add a blusher or a liner. That's how I get the contours. I used to wear a lot of coverage, but then when I was around 20, I realized I liked a curled lash, flush for that almost sunburnt effect, and a lip line. That's my everyday look when I'm rushing out the house. It takes me 30 seconds, and I feel like a new woman. It's either that, or I have a liner on my forehead, cheeks, and lips, or I'm OTD maximalist.

It seems like you're always on the go! Do you have any tips for someone who's looking to add a few steps to level up their makeup routine while out and about?

Have a hand sanitizer with you constantly! Dr. Bronner's Lavender Hand Sanitizer is in every bag. Also, having a liner that will add depth to your face to make you feel more alive so you have contour. Also, you want to add flush to the apples of your cheeks and [curl] your lashes. A good lash curler is a game changer!

From 11 years old, I used to sit at the back of class in school and pulse my eyelashes. I didn't know that you have to replace the rubber thing in the eyelash curler because the metal starts going into it. I sliced half of my lashes from both sides, and they took so long to grow back. So I learned to change the rubber and had to let my lashes grow back! It was my system-regulation tool.

Do you have any advice for someone who's struggling to get their lashes to hold a curl?

It's all about patience! Washing your face before is okay, but you have to make sure your eyelashes are completely dry for at least 10 to 15 minutes. A lash curler works better when it has weight. Curl your lashes, put on one coat of mascara, and let it dry before curling your lashes and focusing on really pulsing the eyelash curler. Then, layer it again four or five times. Also, use a lash-separator tool! They have these metal teeth to comb your eyelashes.

How did you begin doing your makeup on the go?

The on-the-go thing was very natural for me. It makes sense! I'm really good at rushing things under pressure. I procrastinate and do anything that needs to be done besides the actual task. Being outside is what I do every day because I put makeup looks on as I'm moving before I need to be somewhere at a certain time. There's something about the pressure that works for me! When my art doesn't go well and the time's up, it doesn't feel good, but it's also magical because you have to surrender to the perfectionism.

What tips or tricks would you give to anyone who wants to create unique and colorful makeup looks like yours?

For a general approach, I would always say that you should apply a cream product that dries matte, and then powders will stick onto it. Also, make sure you always have hydrated skin, and remember that skin moves! If your skin is hydrated, products will glide onto it since there's a moisturized base and then dry. But it's that step of moisturizing and putting your SPF on before scribbling on the liner! Make sure you have a good skincare regime.

For bold looks, the main thing is to apply cream products and layer pigment on top, or if you'd like to do a red lid, for example, [scribble] a red liner on and blend it quickly. Then, pack lots of powdery pigments on (which is a step up from just using a general primer) to get the tone. For a multicolored lid, I'd scribble a green, red, and yellow, then use the same colors in pigment form.

Lastly, one of the things I've always loved about your posts is your choice in music. It's never a song that's trending! How does that inform your artistry?

I'm going out with a musician, but music has always been my form of escapism. My sister's thing is movies, but mine has always been music! I'm always making new playlists. I can go from soul and jazz to rap in seconds, then back to folk. I love music so much, and I'm really intentional with my music. I don't really imagine a makeup look when I'm listening to music, but I imagine a general vibe! Songs will inspire me in terms of themes, which is also how I think about filming content.

When it comes to applying this ethos to summer dressing in the city, the rules for me are clear: sticking to light linen layers, dresses that can be readily thrown on, neutral-toned pieces mixed with some on-trend block colours, an elevated flip-flop, a woven leather bag, and lastly, some hard-wearing, structured accessories to give my look subtle visual interest. Comfort will always reign supreme for me, but there are ways of doing it with style.

Style Notes: An easy pull-on trouser will forever be my go-to the second the mercury starts to rise. Feeling akin to pyjamas but levelled up, they come in various colours and styles. I prefer wide-leg silhouettes, which balance out my figure and pool beautifully over thong sandals or mesh ballet flats. I also love a simple block colour, much like Monikh demonstrates with her above outfit. Butter yellow, chocolate brown, creamy white or bright-red hues are the way to play the trend this summer.

2. Simple Cotton Tanks

Style Notes: Nothing beats the feeling of slipping on a fresh tank top, especially when it's form-fitting and made of thick ribbed cotton. On its own, it can look cool and sporty, and when layered, it'll ground your look, allowing you to open up your layers. Colour-pop tanks are a great hack to make your look eye-catching without even trying. Take it one step further and layer two tanks on top of each other for a very '90s-fashion spin.

3. Elevated Flip-Flops

Style Notes: Flip-flops often get a bad rap and are typically only chosen for the beach, but if you choose a sturdier style, I say they make for great day wear in the city. In my opinion, leather, suede and other luxe fabric options are best placed for wearing off the beach, giving more of a polished and classic feel to your looks, rather than plastic or rubber variations. Stick to black, brown or snake print to step out in style.

4. Woven Leather Bags

Style Notes: There's something about a basket bag that just screams summer. This year, I'm upgrading my trusty raffia basket with a woven leather variation, because it'll stand me in good stead for much longer. Black and brown is always a safe bet, but a bit of colour will give some spice to your warm-weather looks. I'm buying an extra-large one from cult-favourite brand Dragon Diffusion to carry my laptop around for work and my beach bits on my holiday.

5. Pretty Lace Tops

Style Notes: I've been spotting fashion people in London, Copenhagen and Paris in pretty lace and broderie anglaise blouses for daytime, which give a delicate, vintage feel. Toughen them up with denim or a leather jacket, or layer over a silky slip skirt. I'll be swapping my simple tees for pretty tops like this all summer long.

6. Throw-On Dresses

Style Notes: The best summer dresses are the kind that you can simply slip over your head, shimmy down and be good to go; easy-breezy and minimal fuss thanks to little in the way of zips, ties or fastenings. Ideal for high summer, these dresses are what to go for when you don't want fabric to cling or restrain you in any way. They also look ultra polished when accessories are kept to a minimum. 7. Colour-Block Shirting

Style Notes: I subscribe to the idea that you can never have too many button-down shirts in your wardrobe. I love nothing more than smartening up any look with a cotton poplin number, in either a stripe print or light pastel tone. I'm choosing the latter this summer, and layering it over cotton tanks, flowing trousers and dresses. So crisp and fresh.

8. Vintage-Feel Sunglasses

Style Notes: My way of grounding any look is to throw on a classic pair of sunglasses. They add definition and character to your outfit, whilst keeping your eyes shielded and protected. I'm channelling Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy energy with oval-shaped frames in classic black, taupe and tortoiseshell colours: timeless and classy.

9. Chunky Resin Jewellery

Style Notes: In the past, I've frequently found myself battling with my many necklaces, which have tangled around my neck. This summer, I'm packing them safely away in favour of single resin and acetate styles. They still pack a punch, but are so much easier to slip on and wear all day without getting hot and bothered.

If there’s one thing my friends can count on me for, it’s knowing which trends are about to hit the mainstream. "Soph," they say, "what's in fashion, and what should I be buying?" Right now, I’m advising my nearest and dearest to invest in their summer footwear. It’s the quickest way to upgrade your spring outfits and take them one step closer to summer (pun fully intended). Open-toe season is officially here, and it's time to book in that pedi.

In terms of what's trending, I’m calling it: flat shoes will rule summer 2025, so I'm eschewing trainers and heels in favour of comfy styles that feel elegant and put-together for both day and evening. There's a plethora of flats on offer for summer, which are equally as chic (and sometimes even chicer) than their heeled counterparts. With the sun high in the sky and the mercury rising, there's no better time to experiment a little, and footwear is my favourite way to give a look real intention and style.

Whilst researching summer’s strongest shoe trends, a few things became clear. Strappy sandals are so back, in leather and suede variations, pared-back neutrals and head-turning colours. There are also some closed-toe options coming to the fore, with barely-there mesh flats and jelly styles which have been given luxe updates (don’t be deceived; you still may want to have your toes done for these two). And finally, of course, there's the humble flip-flop. Traditionally banished to the poolside, the oft-misunderstood sandal is going through a renaissance period, and fashion people can't get enough.

Style Notes: If you're typically a minimalist dresser but fancy a little flourish of artful colour to ring in the sunshine, look no further. I've noticed fashion people who tend to dress in neutral, pared-back tones choosing colour-pop sandals with skinny straps and simple profiles. Choose a bright primary tone to give your simple looks a dopamine hit.

Style Notes: There's no denying that flip-flops are bang on trend. Style Notes: The Row sent the internet into a frenzy when it launched its netted jelly flats last summer. The rest of the world is finally catching on and falling (back, if you were a kid in the '90s) in love with jelly sandals in 2025, hook, line and sinker. Mary-Jane shapes and ballet-flat updates make the trend feel contemporary and tasteful.

Working in fashion and the social media arena means I'm often glued to my phone.

Whether I'm scrolling Instagram, Substack or Pinterest (my trio of choice as a millennial), my phone is never far from reach. I daren’t track my screentime—I can only assume it’s at an all-time high. Despite this, constantly having my face in my phone does give me access to the latest breaking trends that matter right now, allowing me to weave together common threads of what’s in style in fashion’s leading cities, including New York, Paris, Copenhagen and my home of London, all from the screen of my smartphone.

All in all, the "trends" I'm personally picking up on are the kind that require a double-take. They're subtle, unassuming and don’t dominate the rest of the wearer’s look. I’m talking tweaks in fabrics, updates in cuts and silhouettes and vintage coded moments reworked for a contemporary feel; blink and you really will miss them. As someone who typically dresses in an anti-trend way with a self-proclaimed eagle eye, it’s the little things that matter the most.

Style Notes: As temperatures rise, so does the need for an easy-breezy shirt or blouse. Broderie anglaise is the pretty fabric trend I'm seeing on blouses, shirts and dresses right now. Silk Scarves

Style Notes: Fashion people have revived the silk scarf over the past few summers, and for 2025, we're not just seeing them tied around handbag handles, worn as bandanas or knotted around the neck; the silk scarf is now being adopted as a belt around the waist in a triangle formation. The key here is to choose a silky material with a classic, vintage-feel pattern to add a bit of visual interest to an otherwise simple, modern look, à la Coco Schiffer (pictured above).

Papery White Trousers

Style Notes: A trend I've seen emerging on the uptown style-setters of New York and now London, white trousers are getting lighter and more delicate than ever in feather-weight cotton and silk constructions akin to paper. They're the perfect solution for those seeking a modest option for summer, and also pack well for hot holidays.

XXL Raffia Totes

Style Notes: Who can blame a girl for wanting a summer-holiday-ready bag that carries everything bar the kitchen sink? The big-raffia-bag trend is exactly that: big. It's also super versatile, working just as well as a summer office bag as it does beachside; just swap out your laptop for your beach towel and book.

Lace-Trimmed Dresses

Style Notes: We have much to thank The Row for, but right now, I'm particularly grateful for the brand's chic reinvention of layering a lace slip, skirt or cami over trousers or jeans (see look 3 from its spring 2025 collection). As we head into summer, choose a classic lace-trimmed cami midi dress in a white or earthy hue, and layer it over loose jeans.

Mesh Ballet Flats

Style Notes: I'm typically a loafer, clog or trainer wearer, but the rise and rise of mesh ballerinas has me second-guessing my summer footwear choices. Pairing so well with pretty warm-weather looks and light enough to wear all day, these light-as-a-feather shoes are city-proof and weekend-ready.

Heirloom Pendant Necklaces

Style Notes: I've noticed this trend cropping up on fashion people with minimal and pared-back yet wealth-whispering style. That doesn't mean to say it's an exclusive trend for those in the upper echelons, though; rather, the beauty of this accessory trend is that it lends itself to a relaxed, DIY-esque look and feel. These are modern treasures.

From Celine Dion singing from the Eiffel Tower in the Olympics opening ceremony to the first instalment of Emily in Paris season 4, all eyes have been on the French capital in the past six months. Emily Cooper’s theatrical costumes often feel even more unrealistic than the dramatic plot twists, however for a more authentic look at Parisian style you don’t need to book a flight to Charles de Gaulle. Thanks to Instagram, you can now see in real time what some of the city’s most fashionable women are wearing and pretend you too are dressing for an afternoon exploring Le Marais.

You only need to look at the international success of French brands such as Sezane and Rouje to see that the obsession with French style is a powerful, commercial force. French fashion influencers and It girls located in Paris have been able to turn the endless fascination with how French women dress into a career opportunity. Jeanne Damas and Anne-Laure Mais have acquired hundreds of thousands of followers for sharing their very fabulous, very French lives and have both used this platform to launch their own clothing brands.

Pop culture might have us believe that French women live in a uniform of Breton stripes, Chanel, and berets, however Parisian style has a lot more to it than these tired clichés. It is true that French designers tend to value timeless, elevated basics, with a focus on effortless, uncomplicated styling, however many of our favorite French influencers also love to experiment with colors, prints, and sportswear. Out of the hundreds of accounts we follow, we have decided that these six French creators will teach you everything you need to know about style. French influencer Mélodie Banfield gives us a romantic view of living in Paris, as she often takes pictures en route home from the boulangerie (baguettes in hand) or having a café au lait at the le Café de Flore. Instead of following the fickle trend cycle, she sticks to a more timeless aesthetic—think trench coats, cable-knit cardigans, and floral slip dresses.

Anne Laure Mais is one of the most well-known French fashion influencers, who blogged under the name Adenorah and is based in Bordeaux. In 2018 she launched her own label, Musier Paris, which is in line with her own personal style. Think leopard print miniskirts, red ballet pumps, and slip maxi dresses.

Immediately following New York Fashion Week back in February, I made a fall/winter 2024 wish list full of pieces I'd just spotted on the runway. On it were textured midi skirts, funnel-neck outerwear, almond-toe flats, and more. Though I wanted each and every piece at the time (and have either checked most of them off or bought something similar albeit budget-friendlier), one particular trend was and still is my favorite by a mile. Spotted at both Michael Kors Collection and Tory Burch, pony- or calf-hair pieces gave off an air of elegance and luxury that nothing else from the runways could compete with.

At Michael Kors, legendary supermodel Amber Valletta modeled a leopard-print calf-hair midi coat styled with simple black pumps and a timeless clasp-closure lady bag. Her signature blonde hair was pulled back in a tight chignon; the only makeup she appeared to have on was bright red lipstick. I, like many others who I spoke with afterward, was enamored. That same week, Tory Burch sent two looks down the runway that featured the sleek, textured material. One featured a calf-hair blazer and matching pencil skirt and the other showcased a cropped, moto-style jacket made of the fabric styled with khaki trousers. Again, I was sick with want.

A few months after fashion month's final finale walk, two new It bags began sparking conversation around the celebrity and influencer set. Saint Laurent's Le 6 à 7 hobo bag and Bea tote, both crafted out of leopard-print calf hair, were spotted around the world, in Los Angeles on A-listers like Hailey Bieber and Zoë Kravitz, in Paris on Kate Moss and Laura Harrier, and in Monza, Italy, on model and content creator Alexandra Saint Mleux, girlfriend of Formula 1 driver Charles Leclerc. Both styles quickly sold out. Though, you can preorder one for delivery at the end of February.

Soon after Saint Laurent's bag boom, a maxi-length pony-fur coat from By Malene Birger began to take off online. Every editor posted photos in it from the fashion closet, while content creators did what they do best—create content—in theirs on the streets in Copenhagen, Paris, and London. Lauren Santo Domingo added it to her Moda Operandi closet—another surefire sign that an item's about to go viral and sell out. It nearly has, with sizes dwindling, though it appears online that a limited restock may be on the way later this month (fingers crossed). More sizes are also available in the cropped version, which is a great alternative if you're not ready to wear leopard-print pony hair from head to toe.

Rarely does a trend come along that works for runway shows, editorials, and street style and costs less than a salad from Chopt. It almost never happens. So when I noticed white tights appearing on all three of the above fashion platforms in droves a few months ago, I naturally flagged it in my brain. I began adding images of them from lookbooks, magazine shoots, and influencer outfit photos to my Saved folder on Instagram while screenshotting runway appearances of them on Vogue Runway. Before long, I had a seemingly endless mood board for styling the $15 hosiery.

On the runways, white tights were styled with knit minidresses at Altuzarra and black or navy column skirts at Tibi and Bevza. On Instagram, our favorite fashion people to follow, from Elsa Hosk to Amy Julliette Lefévre, got creative with lace alternatives to traditional opaque white tights, either adding colorful accessories for contrast or going for a more monochromatic aesthetic in white from head to toe. Though unapproachable at first, white tights are surprisingly easy to introduce into your wardrobe—it just might call for a bit of inspiration to help get you started. Though the red tights showcased were the ones talked about most, in my mind, the appearance of white alternatives really stood out as feeling fresh and relevant for the year ahead.

Amy Julliette Lefévre has elite taste, so whenever I see her wearing a new trend, I never doubt that she knows what she's doing. Here, she chose to style white tights à la the runways by going bottomless with a matching white top and Khaite kitten heels.

This season's Bevza show felt like Svitlana Bevza's best one yet. From the construction of the F/w 24 pieces to the way they were styled, everything about the presentation felt right. From new Helsa drops to It accessories, there's a little bit of everything fashion people want. If you don't believe me, just see this look on the supermodel and designer, which features white lace tights, a must-own Helsa mini for spring, and sky-high strappy heels.

If your Instagram feed looks anything like mine, it's chock-full of perfect-condition Dior and Chanel kitten heels; archival Versace, Tom Ford for Gucci, and Mugler dresses and jackets; and a kaleidoscope of colorful Fendi Baguette bags. Every week it seems, there are more one-of-one items to indulge in, with drops from all fashion eras and categories arriving on my phone screen like clockwork. "At its heart, Nou is an outlet for me to share items that are a reflection of my own psyche and genuine interests." Every one-of-one item sold at the Los Angeles–based store is handpicked based on Ioannou's own, individual tastes: "Each piece showcases a sliver of my mind," she says. It just so happens that what piques her interest, piques a lot of people's interests, a point that's made even more believable when you look at Ioannou's rèsumè, which features stints in the marketing departments at Barneys New York (we miss you!) and Mother Denim. She knows what people want to buy, and Nou's current designer shoe selection can prove it.

Tell me about your community. 

Just like any form of self-expression, the opinion of what is fashionable is relative and varies from person to person. I'm so grateful to have a community that understands my taste and my vision. My greatest success is making other women look and feel good through what they're wearing. I still pinch myself anytime I'm out and a cool chick comes up to me and recognizes my brand. I hope that every person who shops Nou feels how personal it is. Every single item that I share with my community is something I love and would wear myself.

Describe the feeling of discovering a true vintage gem, and what are some of the best ones you've found in the past?

There's a certain rush that comes with discovering something you were never expecting to find. I discovered some of my most memorable vintage while sourcing in Paris. I'll never forget this 1998 vintage black Versace gown that I found. It had the most divine fishnet detailing all along the sides and hugged the body in all of the right places. What a beautiful experience it is to go into a place filled with a slew of items and come out with just a small handful of things that made you feel something.

Tell me about your experience as a woman starting your own business.

At times, working for yourself can feel very isolating. The best knowledge really does come through experience, and sometimes the only way to learn is through making mistakes. I always tell my friends, you never sleep the same after starting your own business. There is a lot of pressure to keep things flowing, and that can be tough when you're naturally a creative like me. The business side of things can definitely feel overwhelming. With all that being said, the risk is definitely worth the reward.

Do you have any tips for other women who want to start shopping vintage but don't know where to start?

Sourcing vintage goes beyond just having a knack for it. It's hours of research and discovery. It's hedging bets. It's doing the work on yourself so your intuition is strong and clear. I'll be digging in the most random of corners in the world and come out with just five pieces that I really believe in. I hand-carry everything home just for you, try everything on to make sure it fits and feels right, and often pay a premium that doesn't make sense for reselling. Just like any other career, you have to really love what you do, and that feeling will reflect in the work you produce.

Mariana Vergara started her vintage store, Merci, C'est Vintage, as a hobby when she moved to Paris for school. "I was a uni student with an extremely refined eye that was way bigger than my budget," she says. She spent her free time sourcing items that spoke to her from Paris's many vintage markets and either saving them for herself or selling them to her three best friends. Because she didn't speak any French, when people would ask her about one of her finds while out, she'd respond with the simple phrase, "Merci, c'est vintage." Hence the name. That's when she ventured onto Instagram to make her hobby into a business. "I just sourced beautiful pieces that I loved and posted [about them]," she says. "And then I started creating loyal customers."

Recently, Vergara ventured off the web and started selling her finds at pop-up events, allowing her to create in-person relationships with the community she's amassed online. Her latest was held at the Fifth Avenue Hotel in Manhattan, while another took place last summer at Soho House in Paris. If you missed them, though, there's always plenty to find online.

What's your favorite part about your work on Merci, C'est Vintage? 

I think it's probably the fact of being constantly stimulated by beautiful clothing, jewelry, home objects, and antiques. It's sort of an escape. It's refined my eye in ways I couldn't imagine. Also just learning history through clothing is a really beautiful part of this industry. 

Now that Merci, C'est Vintage has been doing IRL pop-up events, I think that connecting with my customers has also been incredibly gratifying. I just had a customer that has been buying from me for years at different stages of her life recently need me to source her some jewelry for her wedding, and I did. This was such a highlight of my experience with Merci, C'est Vintage. To be able to grow and evolve with my customers and to find them special pieces that I know will be cherished forever and at memorable points of their life is really incredible.

Tell me about your community. How do you interact with it? How have you gone about building it? 

Community is so special. When I started Merci, C'est Vintage's Instagram, it was a hobby, and I treated it as a mood board, so I took it very lightly. Every follower I got would be like a new friend—every new customer I would have really deep conversations with. I would follow up after each purchase. I'd ask them to send pictures, and it sort of felt like I was creating a community of vintage lovers without really having that as a goal. I just felt that I was sharing this passion for beautiful items with other people. For now, this is still possible because most of the purchases happen via Instagram. (Although, we are launching our website soon.) I know that once the business starts scaling, this might not be as possible, but I'd like to think that I will forever be able to have close relationships with my customers. When you buy Merci, C'est Vintage, you are buying into my personal sourcing, so I find the transaction personal. I want to know where these precious treasures go to. Now, these IRL events that I've been hosting this past year have made this sense of community even stronger.

If you like pretty things, you'll want to follow Julia Rabinowitsch's vintage brand, The Millennial Decorator, on Instagram immediately. Really, you should add push notifications for her page as well since practically every pair of '80s, '90s, and early '00s Dior and Chanel shoes she releases sells out in minutes. Rabinowitsch started the brand in 2020, when she was living on unemployment and in search of a creative outlet. "I started TMD with the intention of wanting to share how I was decorating my life in a unique and affordable way," she says. "My answer to that was through vintage." Her mom instilled in her at an early age that buying vintage and secondhand was the way to go, so naturally, the practice stuck with her through the years.

"We first started solely as a vintage homeware account, and I had very small drops centered around homeware," she explains. "Think Elsa Peretti bean dishes, coffee table books, Picasso lithographs, etc." A year after starting TMD, her love of fashion drew her to curate her first non-homeware drop, which she focused on vintage shoes after noticing a gap in the market. "At the time, a vintage brand solely dedicated to footwear didn't exist, but I thought it was a far more inclusive and interesting route than only doing vintage clothing or even a mix of both," she says. "With clothing, I knew I would be sourcing one-of-ones versus shoes that could fit everyone." When she found it to be successful, she kept the shoe drops coming. "Today, we have monthly vintage drops that feature vintage heels ranging from a [European] size 35 to 42," she says. For her, TMD offers women of all ages the chance to discover the best of what vintage has to offer. "Every shoe I include in our drops has a timeless nature to it, and I often talk about giving our shoes a true second (or hundredth) life. The heels are meant to stay with you for life as a real investment versus just a trend."

What drew you to start sourcing designer vintage and eventually launch The Millennial Decorator?

Vintage has always been a big part of my life. My mom raised me [on her own], and when I was born and for many years of my life, most of my toys, clothing, and even crib were secondhand. My mom instilled a deep love of fashion in me and was a fashion importer herself from Paris to the States, so the world of vintage and fashion was always inscribed in my life. I launched The Millennial Decorator completely organically. Vintage, to me, was and continues to be an extremely interesting convergence in new and old fashion. For someone like me who looks for unique pieces to wear in a somewhat affordable way, vintage was the best solution. Hence The Millennial Decorator being born. I launched a vintage brand because I personally was sourcing vintage for myself, both for my home and wardrobe. I found that in a sea of affiliate links and influence, it was hard to make a purchasing decision that is truly unique to you and different from the rest. The world of vintage and The Millennial Decorator allows women all around the world to buy that special pair of shoes they know will be different (and probably longer-lasting) than all the rest.

What is it like discovering a really special vintage item, and what are some of the best ones you've sourced in the past?

There's no better feeling. I started sourcing vintage shoes when no one else was doing it, and the heels I sourced early on have become staples and cult favorites today. I'm talking about the Chanel mesh slingbacks with ribbons, the pointed Chanel two-toned slingbacks, the perfect crisp pair of suede Chanel flats from the '80s, or the Karl Lagerfeld–era Rosebud Chanel heels. We still include all these staples in our drops, which is always very special. To me, finding a true vintage gem is like uncovering a work of art—something of the past that you only hear myths about. Each shoe is a real relic in that they express so much about the time period, designer, and brand, and to see how they still translate in today's time and the ways that women are [wearing them] feels really special. Some of my favorite shoe finds [are] Chanel Rosebud sandals by Karl Lagerfeld, a perfect pair of red patent Chanel flats, pink satin YSL heels, Chanel bow mules, Tom Ford for Gucci bow string sandals, and so many more.

Tell me about your experience as a woman starting your own business. What are some of the challenges you've had to overcome?

Growing up with a single mom, all I ever saw was a strong woman working for our livelihood. It's a blessing that I never saw anything else, because today, I feel like I have the best women supporting me. Instead of being fearful that I was doing it all on my own, I felt uplifted. Luckily, I have been able to work with the best individuals around the world who have helped me to get to where I am today—designers who took note of me and influencers who started wearing our heels early on. That was a big help. Of course, there are many challenges I face. Navigating being an entrepreneur as a female comes with its brevity, but I've learned that as long as I surround myself with the right individuals, I'll be okay no matter what. It took time for people to take me seriously and see me as more than just another vintage brand, which took and continues to take hard work, day and night, seven days a week. I was extremely surprised to see how welcoming the larger fashion industry has been for someone in the vintage realm. We're not really looked at as competition when working with contemporary brands, which has been amazing to see, and the work we've done with modern-day designers like Mirror Palais is some of the work I'm most proud of today. 

Working for yourself is hard, but I feel it's also an amazing, uplifting, and empowering process, especially as a female.

With the mile signs on the highway to spring counting down faster and faster with each passing day, it's time to stop talking about warm-weather outfit planning and actually start doing it. For me, such a process has to always start with one thing, a theme, aka the vibe I'm hoping to achieve from mid-March, when spring officially kicks off, until summer. And after some soul-searching and even more Instagram scrolling, I've picked mine: elegance.

To get into the spring frame of mind, I set aside a few hours earlier this week to start researching outfit ideas that align with my mission of looking utterly elegant throughout the season ahead. And since I'm well aware of the fact that my fashion goals for 2024 aren't exactly groundbreaking, I thought I'd go ahead and share my findings in case anyone's interested but doesn't have quite as much designated outfit-ideating time in the week as I do.

There comes a time in almost every fashion item's lifespan when the hype around it starts to wane. That doesn't in any way, shape, or form mean that said praise will never return, but it does probably signify the need to store those afflicted pieces away for a while to make room for their replacements. Nowhere are trends cycling as quickly and significantly right now than footwear, a space where, in 2024, buzzy colors, shapes, and specific shoe styles dethrone their formerly on-top foes on a near-daily basis.

As sad as it can be to wave goodbye to the shoes in your collection that accompanied you on many a 10,000-step walk, subway-stair climb, and worldly vacation, it has to be done. But don't worry—2024's footwear offering is nothing to scoff at. Once you see the six "in" styles below, I'm sure any residual sorrow will quickly be replaced with feelings of elation.

As cool as they oftentimes look when they appear on runways, denim footwear just hasn't been impressing at the level it once did in recent seasons. What has been, though, are all of the patent-leather shoes that have dropped in the last few months, from Saint Laurent's viral Lee slingbacks to Ferragamo's drool-worthy knee-high boots. Pretty much, if the shoes are covered in patent leather in 2024, they're set to go viral. Yes, you can quote me on that.

Though the extra inches were a nice bonus during the last couple of years of platform dominance, my shins are thankful for the way the style's popularity has subsided. These days, the heels on every chic fashion person's feet are much more sleek and subtle than the platforms of yore, featuring pretty embellishments à la Prada and approachable heel heights courtesy of The Row, Phoebe Philo, and more.

I've never actually thought highly of the PVC shoe trend—apart from a few exceptions that include Maryam Nassir Zadeh's iconic Olympia Wedges and Alaïa's heart pumps—mostly because of how uncomfortable the material can be in the summertime, especially when they're not made well. Because of that, deprioritizing the style won't be all that difficult, especially since the alternative features the fishnet material that I haven't been able to shut up about for months. To get the look right, take cues from Alaïa's boots and ankle-strap wedges as well as The Row.

The "metallic everything" trend has been fun and all, but going into 2024, my goal is to transition my wardrobe into a more minimal, timeless state of being, which is why I'm giving up a majority of my all-over silver footwear and trading them in for tamer but equally chic gray options from the likes of Prada and Ferragamo as well as Zara and Reformation.

Remember bubble shoes? From clogs to sandals to boots, there was a time not too long ago when many of the most-wanted shoe styles appeared full of CO2. These days, though, those blown-up silhouettes haven't been getting much wear time. Instead, another comfy, pillowy footwear option has taken over. After they were spotted on the F/W 23 runways at Gucci, Burberry, and Khaite, to name just a few, furry shoe styles have slowly but surely crept into fashion's top spot. After you try on a pair, you'll start to understand why.

We're no more than mere days into 2024, and already, the year's first footwear phenomenon has taken hold, commanding over Instagram and single-handedly ushering in a very chic but slightly uncomfortable 366 days. Its name is Lee. Crafted by Saint Laurent's creative director since 2016, Anthony Vaccarello, the Lee is a 4.25-inch geometric stiletto with a heel that's varnished in the same color of the exaggerated buckle that fastens its patent-leather slingback straps to the rest of the shoes. Some variations are available with a black heel if too much gold isn't your thing. Available in six colorways, the style made its debut at the French house's fall/winter 2023 show alongside '80s-inspired corporate ensembles fit for the office siren, and now that its shoppable, fashion's elite, including Laura Harrier and Hailey Bieber, can't seem to get enough. 

Scrolling through my Instagram feed over the last few days, I've noticed the vampy stilettos on a near-constant basis, often styled alongside other pieces from the fall collection, including pencil skirts, sheer and low-cut tank tops, and shoulder-padded oversize blazers. Hosiery is a must with these, and extra-sheer tights are the primary pick for most of the wearers I've seen. According to Vogue, the goal of Vaccarello's collection was to hit on the concept of elegance and "being dressed." There was a time not long ago when putting on a pencil skirt, stockings, and heels this sky-high would've sent a shutter down most of our spines. That's no longer the case, though, and 2024's early obsession with the Lee silhouette is further proof that comfort is no longer king. This year, a "look at me" outfit will reign supreme over one that satisfies your sense of touch and feel. I love my trusty Uggs, too, but they just don't show off like the Lees will.

Made of 100% calfskin leather in Italy, the Lee heels, shown above on the runway in Paris, are as well crafted as they are daringly high. 

Even with the tall heel—a stark contrast to the microscopic kitten heels that dominated the trendscape in 2023—the Lee's oversize buckles are still the focal point.

Of the six available colors, three are black with variations in material for the leather as well as the heel. The crocodile-embossed and patent-leather options come with the sleek black heel, while a brushed-leather alternative features the aforementioned striking gold one. From there, the Lee is also offered in cognac, brown, and tan. 

Everyone's favorite London-based French woman took to the library to show off her Lees and accompanying pinstripe ensemble. The glasses really drove the look home. 

Moroccan stylist Oumayma Elboumeshouli's runway gloves, jewelry, and belt further emphasize Vaccarello's intention to create impactful ensembles. Still, my eyes went straight to the shoes.

As much as I write about celebrity style, personally, I don't often find myself looking to the celeb set for outfit inspiration. Sure, the occasional Zoë Kravitz or Jennifer Lawrence look will catch my eye, but it's rare that one single high-profile person's style choices get their hooks in me. And yet, there is someone right now who has done just that, and it's probably not who you'd expect. 

In the last few weeks, no one's Instagram account has enthralled me quite as much as Kelly Rutherford's. Containing a mix of inspirational quotes and seemingly effortless yet mouthwateringly chic outfits, the former Gossip Girl star's feed has had me in what I can only describe as a chokehold for days now, so much so that practically my entire saved folder is made up of mirror selfies she's posted this winter.

Apparently, I'm not the only one who's recently become a super fan. "Out of all the original Gossip Girl cast members, I don’t know why I didn’t think to follow Kelly more closely," Brooklyn-based freelance fashion editor Cortne Bonilla explains over DM. "A few weeks ago, I came across her Instagram profile after one of my favorites brands, By Malene Birger, reposted an ensemble of hers," she continues. "In the age of mass girlhood, it’s so refreshing to see a woman of a certain age embracing personal style, experimentation, and emerging brands." For her, it's Rutherford's very personal sense of style that drew her in. "Kelly doesn’t dress for a trend or age, she dresses for herself—you can tell by her mixture of the old and the new, the classic and the experimental." 

On her feed, one will find a mix of just-released outerwear from the aforementioned Danish brand that fashion girls regularly obsess over to casual yet luxe knitwear. Most of her looks are colored in a palette of quiet-luxury neutrals, from camel to ivory, with touches of navy, black, and brown for good measure. Every article of clothing is glamorous yet nonchalant, making each of the actress's outfits more than worth copying.

Unfortunately, scoring anything on her feed—especially the footwear I'm currently eyeing, her By Malene Birger shearling slippers—is going to take some saving up on my part (not to mention restocking, since those exact shoes are almost sold out). Fortunately, I did find a slightly more affordable and readily available alternative that'll allow me to mimic Rutherford's best cold-weather outfits in the meantime.
