We're officially in the midst of the holiday season, and all the plans and preparations are in full swing. Top of mind for all of our upcoming festive soirées are the looks, the menus, the cocktails, the party soundtracks, and—most importantly—the gifts. For over a decade, one of my go-tos for shopping inspiration when it comes to buying the chicest, most covetable pieces, from fashion to home décor, has been the one and only Hillary Kerr.

1. Thoughtfully templatize your gifts.
"My overall best gift-gifting strategy is to find an incredible signature gift for a group of folks in my life and then just do that for everyone. For example: My best friends are all getting a session with celebrity makeup artist Joey Maalouf for the holidays. A few years ago, I gave everyone on my team at work a personalized sweatshirt from The Great. And this templatizing scheme works for non-holiday presents as well. My kids' friends all got Super Smalls bead kits and a small Squishmallow for their birthdays this year, and that might change next year, or maybe not! Who knows. My point is that I think it's wonderful to have a go-to gift for an assortment of the people in your life, especially if that gift is excellent. High impact, low fuss—what's not to like?"

2. Upgrade their everyday essentials.
"As a Virgo, I'm a hugely competitive gift giver and pride myself on giving excellent presents. My favorite trick is to upgrade someone's everyday essentials, giving them a more luxurious version of a staple they already adore, taking a key piece they love—like their go-to white T-shirt that's seen better days or a lower-quality cashmere crewneck sweater—and giving them a leveled-up version. (I love Leset's T-shirts, for the record.) No one is ever mad about it.

"The best part about this strategy is you can upgrade or curate options for your giftee for any part of their home or life. For example, one year, I upgraded everything in my parents' bathroom with products that I know and love. That included shampoo and conditioner from Roz, bodywash from Necessaire, lotion from Kiehl's, skincare from Dr. Idriss, towels from Matouk, and sunscreen from Supergoop."

3. Spoil them with small splurges.
"Giving someone an over-the-top version of a really utilitarian product is another one of my gifting tricks. One year, I gave a few of my friends an extremely luxurious lip balm from Hermès, and the response was overwhelming. It's the sort of thing they might not have bought for themselves but feels so fun as a present."

4. Keep a year-round idea list.
"My true secret for giving the best gifts ever? I have a note on my phone for all my favorite people, and any time they mention something—whether it's something they love or a pain point they're dealing with—I add it to my file. Then when it's time to shop for their birthday, an anniversary, or the holidays, I have a running list of ideas, which saves me from panic-shopping at the last second."

These days, we know her as the woman who forever changed the way we do our brows—the woman who saved us from the skinny, wiry arches we thought looked so good circa 1995. But to hear Anastasia Soare tell it, she came into the business of bettering our brows almost by accident after immigrating to Los Angeles from her native Romania back in the early ’90s.

"Look, you don’t speak the language,” she remembers her husband telling her at that time. "Probably the only job you could get here without speaking the language is aesthetician.” She took his advice and enrolled in beauty school in the San Fernando Valley, eventually graduating and getting a job at a salon on Melrose Place. With some help from her clients, her English quickly improved.

One thing she quickly began to notice during those early years at the salon? "Nobody paid attention to brows in the ’90s,” she says (and unfortunately my middle school class photos can attest to this). Either we were letting them go truly wild and unkempt, or we were plucking them into oblivion. Sensing a real gap in the marketplace, she started incorporating brow-shaping into her clients’ facials. Eventually, she realized she had the tools and the know-how to start her own business.

"I told my husband, ‘I think I’m going to open my own business. I’m going to rent a room and start doing eyebrows,” she says. "And he looked at me like, Are you crazy?” Quickly, she realized her instincts were right, however, as the business she set up in Beverly Hills was soon booming. Agents for supermodels like Cindy Crawford and Naomi Campbell were booking appointments for their clients (although Soare admits she didn’t know who they were at the time).

The next opportunity she sensed was the lack of brow products out there on the market. "I used to mix aloe vera with Vaseline and with eye shadow to make this pomade,” she recalls, and it was such a hit with the women whose brows she sculpted that they began requesting batches. "I realized, ‘I’m only in Beverly Hills—how could I help women around the world learn to do their eyebrows? … That was the aha moment when I thought, I need to do a product line.”

By 2000, she was selling her products in her salon and also in 20 Nordstrom stores, where she had her Brows Studios. She didn’t get onto Instagram until 2012—thanks to some encouragement from her daughter—and the rest is history: All of a sudden, people went from barely thinking about their brows to their brows becoming the focal point of their looks. And eventually she decided to expand Anastasia Beverly Hills’ product offering to include lipsticks, eye shadows, and so much more.

These days, her products fly off shelves at Sephora, and she says it’s all down to her company’s ethos of only releasing products they absolutely love. There’s a lot of trial and error involved, as you might imagine: "Sometimes you could find out after six months that it’s not going to work,” she shares. "The stability test after six months is not going to work. And then that project you have to abandon and start all over again.” Clearly this is a strategy that’s working for Soare and her team, as they recently brought on an investor to help them scale up. We can’t wait to see what they launch next…

Native New Yorker Jenni Konner grew up knowing she wanted to be involved in entertainment (no surprise, given that both of her parents were acclaimed television writers), but she didn’t necessarily know that she wanted to be a producer. Or that she’d eventually find herself at the helm of one of the most discussed shows on television six seasons running (that’d be HBO’s Girls, which she co-created with actress Lena Dunham), regularly appearing on the red carpet and handling interview requests.

No, her earliest years post-college were spent paying her dues: She worked as a runner at the Emmys (a job she admits she wasn’t the greatest at, given her self-appointed status as "the slowest driver in Los Angeles”), read scripts at TriBeCa, and worked as a temp at Chanel in the publicity department while pursuing writing on the side. Eventually, she and her early writing partner, Alexandra Rushfield (now known for her work on shows like Shrill, Parks and Recreation, and Love) made their way into the writing room at Undeclared, where they absorbed as much as they could from the show’s creator, Judd Apatow.

"The thing I learned the most was the teaching people while you’re working with them,” Konner says. "A big thing I learned from him is to try to mentor people while they’re working for you, and explain to them why they’re doing this and show them what editing looks like, and bring them into casting if it’s their episode.”

She also says that her experience of being one of the only women in a writing room back in those early days underlined the importance of making diversity a priority for her when she was in charge later on in her career as a producer on shows like Girls and Camping.

Konner (who says that feeling out new creative partnerships is a bit like dating) is quick to point out the importance of pulling in people you genuinely enjoy being around, given the serious amount of time you’ll all be spending on set together: "I have to tell you, we had almost the exact same crew for all of the years of Girls, and they were like family by the end.”

If you spend as much time time style-stalking celebrities as we do, you get to know the work of mega-stylists like Karla Welch quite intimately. I mean, her impressive clientele consists of some of the biggest names in entertainment, so even if you live under a literal rock, you've probably gotten a glimpse of one of her Major Looks on A-listers like Justin Bieber (in green at Coachella), Tracee Ellis Ross (remember this Met Gala creation?), or Sarah Paulson (🔥🔥🔥 in Prada at the U.K. Glass premiere).

So we weren't entirely surprised to hear that she grew up living and breathing fashion… She spent her formative years working at her father's menswear store in her native Canada, dreaming of someday being a fashion designer. She took a little detour into the culinary world after getting her B.A. ("I think it was because I watched Tequila Sunrise with Michelle Pfeiffer," she shares), but after moving to L.A. in the early 2000s with her husband (photographer Matthew Welch), she hit the ground running, discovering her knack for styling looks while working on advertising shoots.

"I just started doing every one of Matthew's jobs, and amazingly, we did the first iPod campaigns," she recalls. (Anyone else automatically get The Vines' "Ride" stuck in their head just thinking about that era?) Work in advertising led her to start booking gigs as as personal stylist for actresses like Alexis Bledel, who she met on a shoot for The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. "I'm going to do every job they send my way," she remembers thinking, a philosophy that has served her well throughout her career.

As for what's next for the woman who's been lauded as one of the industry's most powerful stylists by outlets like The Hollywood Reporter and The New York Times? In addition to her duties styling Elisabeth Moss, Olivia Wilde, and Amber Heard, among other clients, she's continuing her streak of excellent collaborations with brands like Hanes (you all know that white T-shirt we editors keep raving about?), Levi's, Stripes, and Meta. It’s seriously refreshing to hear that someone like Hillary Kerr—our co-founder, chief content officer, and resident Vanderpump Rules expert—can appreciate how easy it is to get bogged down with the whirlwind of the day-to-day. And given that she built WWW from the ground up, co-wrote three books, launched not one but three lines at Target, and recently found just a little spare time to host a wildly successful podcast (3MM+ downloads and counting) and become mom to a handsome young gentleman by the name of Clark, it’s fair to say she’s uniquely qualified to dish out career advice…

She’ll start by telling you to pause and really celebrate the wins that make all this hard work so worth it. When I asked how she treats herself to mark important moments (without defaulting to buys that only end up in the back of her closet), Hillary gave me an unexpected (but very appealing) answer: precious, one-of-a-kind natural diamonds with fascinating backstories. First off, we know what your job entails, but how would you describe what you do for a living to someone who doesn’t know the industry?

I’m the chief content officer for Who What Wear, which means I oversee our editorial, social, creative, and copy teams here in the U.S. and the UK. I also host and produce my podcast, Second Life, which I created a year ago for the company. I think my job is pretty straightforward; if you look at or read anything we create, I have a hand in it!

Can you tell us about some significant milestones you’re most proud of?

Well, to be frank, most of my career has been spent at Who What Wear, so that’s where my most memorable achievements have happened. Writing three books is definitely at the top of that list, as is our inclusive collection at Target. I’m also really proud of what we’ve built with Second Life; it’s truly the most fun thing to work on, and it seems to really resonate with our audience too. But the biggest thing that I’m proud of is creating this company with Katherine Power. When we started the company in 2006, no one thought we’d make it. I’m so proud that nearly 13 years later, we’re still flourishing and have built the most amazing team. 

What’s the first meaningful purchase you ever remember treating yourself to?

It took me a long time to actually invest in myself. The first time I remember doing something noteworthy was buying a dress from Jason Wu’s S/S 11 collection, which I wore to the L.A. dinner party we threw to celebrate our second book, What to Wear, Where. It was the first time I’d ever bought a dress from a runway collection, and it was certainly the most expensive purchase I’d ever made.

The dress is perfect, and I still love it to pieces, but now I prefer buying myself natural diamonds, in part because of the price-per-wear aspect. No matter how much you love a dress, there’s only so much you’re going to wear it. But diamonds… Well, you can wear them every single day, and they only make you happier. Plus they’re seasonless and a great investment—what’s not to love?

What is it about natural diamonds in particular that really speaks to you?

I love their backstory. Diamonds are billions of years old, they’re truly individuals—every single diamond that exists on this planet is totally one-of-a-kind, and took eons to create under really crazy and intense condition. I think that’s magical, and that makes them my favorite gemstone by far.

How would you describe your work wardrobe? Is there anything you wear every single day or put on especially when you want to feel confident?

A strong blazer is always a key piece of my work wardrobe, as it can make me feel pulled together, even when I’m having a rough day. I also always wear a handful of pieces of jewelry; my mismatched diamond lightning-bolt and evil-eye earrings are crucial for me. I literally never take them off.

Tell us more about that!

I’m a little funny about the earrings; the evil eye was a gift from my mother, and the lightning bolt I bought myself after my son was born. The combo makes me feel protected, in some cosmic way.

We love that idea of self-gifting…

No one needs to give you permission to celebrate yourself and your achievements, and that’s why I think it’s important to take a moment and recognize that you did something incredible. That feels so empowering and satisfying to me.

Do you have any other jewelry pieces you wear on a regular basis?

My diamond engagement ring is a family heirloom—the center stone is an old-mine diamond that was cut in the late 1800s, while the four emerald-cut baguettes on either side were actually cut in the early 1950s, all set in platinum—and I wanted to leave the setting exactly the same because it’s perfect the way it is. Regarding our wedding bands, we worked with our amazing jeweler to source vintage diamonds from the same era as the center stone of my engagement ring. Our reasoning was this: Even though the diamonds were new to us, they were cut at the same time my engagement ring was created, in the late 1800s, and we thought that honored the past in a really sweet way. We loved that the wedding bands are both old and new, and something that my husband and I designed together.

How does your day-to-day differ from what people assume? What’s a common misconception you hear on repeat?

I don’t think people realize that I’m as hands-on when it comes to our content. Yes, I deal with high-level strategy every day, but I’m also in brainstorms and editorial meetings every single day, too. I also love working with our incredible sales team and enjoy that piece of my work tremendously. Most people don’t realize I do all the booking, questions, and research for the Second Life podcast, but I do!

Is your current career path the one you envisioned for yourself when you were growing up?

I had a lot of ideas about what I wanted to be when I grew up, and frankly this is both better than what I ever imagined for myself, and totally on brand. I always knew I’d work with words in some way or another, but I never thought I’d be an entrepreneur.

What was a weird challenge you faced as you built Who What Wear that people don’t really know about?

Now everyone loves the digital space, but back when we started the company, no one in fashion, beauty, or entertainment wanted anything to do with it. So I think the fact that we had to educate people on what digital and social even looked like was definitely a challenge.

Do you feel like a success? What was your picture of a "successful woman” when you were younger?

Yes and no. In many ways, I’m so proud of what we’ve accomplished, but I also see that there’s so much left to do, and that excites me. In my head, a "successful woman” wore suits and heels and went to an office every day. I’m not much for suits, but I do love heels—and my office.

We’ve noticed you seem to wear your diamond necklaces every day as well… Can you tell us about that? 

I think my personal style runs on the feminine side, but I also love strong moments and vintage pieces too, and that really explains my collection of jewelry as well.

We know you’re in hot demand and do these kind of interviews a lot! What do you wish people would actually ask?

I’m a bit of a pop culture nerd, and I really wish someone would ask me about my thoughts on Vanderpump Rules (which is essential viewing, in my opinion), Killing Eve (I’m obsessed), or the ice cream recipes I’ve been testing for #GameOfCones, which is my ice cream side hustle to go with the show.

Sophia Roe's passions didn't begin as passions—they started as mere distractions to her tough childhood. The child of two substance abusers, Roe ended up in the foster system but found comfort and stability in both food and music. "I don't have a relationship with my mom. I have no family. I don't even have a photograph of my dad. I lived in a car. A two-time college dropout and I'm the happiest person in the world. Nobody sleeps better than me. I'm so happy. Remember you get to choose… You get to choose how to handle your day." If that's not a quote to live by, we don't know what is.

Roe also has advice when it comes to pursuing your goals—and faltering along the way. "Check in with your dreams because they change," Roe says. "Check in with yourself. Pull yourself over and check your GPS. And sometimes your GPS is totally broken and you just get a whole new system. That's okay, too." All of our guests have changed careers at some point, but Susan Tynan's path took several different turns on her way to raising $67 million in venture financing for Framebridge, a quick and affordable custom framing site. The founder and CEO, a Harvard Business School graduate, shares advice on how to accept hearing "no" in your career, how to run a business ethically, and how to lift women up.

"I pitched a million people," Tynan says. "And it's funny, because everyone always says, 'You had a really easy run,' but I mean, you have to learn that a million minus three are going to say no to you, and will make you question everything." Once she started accepting this fact, Tynan didn't let the rejection get to her and kept forging ahead. As her company grew from zero to 450 employees in four years, Tynan learned the importance of practicing what you preach: She revealed that her board is comprised of half women and half men, an important statistic for a female-founded business. 

For all of her impressive accomplishments, however, Tynan remains focused on the joy it brings her. "We are involved truly with the nicest times in people's lives," she says. "It's the happiest business. I could not overstate it. I get choked up every time I walk through what we're framing. People have chosen something that they were either really proud of or was a moment that took them. The more I get into it, the more I think there's a lot of emotional value in what we do."

A Letter From Who What Wear's Co-Founders:

What do you remember about 2006?

Well, for starters, you probably weren’t reading this on your phone, because the iPhone didn’t exist. It’s highly probable that you were into MySpace that year, or maybe you were in college and had a Facebook account to check. It’s also possible you didn’t spend much time online at all, other than to check out party picture websites (WireImage) to see what fashion-forward celebs (the Olsens) wore while out and about (at Hyde) the night before, write about their style choices and how they fit into the fashion cycle as a whole, and link to where to buy those exact items.

Oh wait, that was us!

As of this month, we’ve officially been in business for 10 years, and it’s honestly rather astonishing to think about how much WhoWhatWear.com and the digital world have changed over the last decade. When we started this company, we published one story a day and felt so tremendously lucky and grateful that we immediately connected with you, dear readers. Since then, this company has grown to include four content brands, a line of clothing and accessories at Target, three books, and even UK and Australia site expansions.

So what’s stayed the same? Well, we still feel incredibly lucky and grateful to have the greatest audience in the world, and we cannot thank you enough for your amazing support over the years. You make this all possible, so thank you, thank you, thank you!

On that note, in thinking back over the past decade of work and getting a little nostalgic about all the amazing style-minded women and fashion trends we’ve covered, we had an idea. What if we brought the last 10 years of Who What Wear to life? It sounds a little crazy, but we decided to do just that and are so excited to announce the #WWW10 Experience.

This Thursday, November 3, through Sunday, November 13, we’re unveiling a museum retrospective dedicated to the past decade of fashion, pop culture, and street style, all from the Who What Wear perspective. It will include everything from an exhibition of Nicole Richie’s go-to sunglasses to a room dedicated to every major denim moment over the last 10 years. It’s been a big year here at Who What Wear: We launched our first collection for Target back in January and our co-founders released their latest book in May. Plus, 2016 also marks our site’s 10th anniversary. Now, you can add yet another milestone to that list: We’ve officially introduced our very first logo update. Check out our fresh look below, and go a bit further to get the backstory from our co-founder Hillary Kerr.

Hillary Kerr's Letter To Our Readers: 

When we first started Who What Wear back in 2006, people thought we were a little crazy. Websites like ours didn’t really exist, and the fashion industry didn’t take the digital world seriously. We knew we needed to bridge the huge gap between traditional fashion magazines and digital content, and one of the main ways we did that was by adapting print standards and sensibilities for the web. That meant holding ourselves to high journalistic standards in our writing and reporting, creating original layouts, using thoughtful photo editing to tell stories, and selecting a font for our logo that was inspired by the magazine world.

We love this part of our past, and we still hold ourselves to the same high standards when it comes to creating incredible content for WhoWhatWear.com. But as for our logo? Well, let’s put it this way: Do you have the exact same hairstyle you did a decade ago? Signs point to no. In other words, it was overdue for a little refresh.

So today, almost 10 years after we started WhoWhatWear.com, we’re very pleased to debut our very first logo update. While the old logo paid homage to the magazine world that gave us our start, the new logo reflects who we are now and is definitively digital in its DNA. We think it’s a fitting upgrade to honour a decade of work and a strong choice for the next 10 years (and beyond).

We hope you like it, and we’d also like to take a moment to thank you for all your support over the years. We wouldn’t be here without you, and we appreciate all of you tremendously.

Crafting the perfect office wardrobe is a tricky task. How can you convey your personal style, try out new trends, and impress your co-workers all at the same time? Well, our very own Who What Wear co-founder, Hillary Kerr, is here to help.

Appearing on Access Hollywood, Kerr broke down the dos and don'ts of dressing for the office. Inspired by a chapter in her latest book, The Career Code: Must-Know Rules for a Strategic, Stylish, and Self-Made Career, the segment explained how to make five specific pieces work for your 9-to-5: over-the-knee boots, a sweatshirt, a slip dress, track pants, and a crop top. For example, you might think that a sweatshirt would be too casual for the office, but it just takes a few key additions to make it more sophisticated, including a pleated midi skirt and high-heeled sandals. If there’s ever been a time we wished we lived in America, it’s right now. Today, our U.S. team launched the Who What Wear collection (in partnership with Target) in style at ArtBeam, NYC. We watched all the fun unfold on Snapchat and Twitter, and boy was this a stylish crowd.

Jessica Alba, Kate Bosworth and Jaime King came together with our founders Hillary Kerr and Katherine Power to help celebrate the collection that will become the classic building blocks of an elevated wardrobe (with fashion girl–approved updates).

Unfortunately the line isn’t available in Australia, but if you’re heading over to the U.S., you can shop it online and in store at Target from January 31.
