Nothing is off the table—this summer is going to be well-rounded. That means art, culture, music, and sports.

If, by some chance, you’re unaware of all the happenings from now until September, don’t worry. I’ll clue you in. Harry Styles is going on tour—that’s right. After stops in Amsterdam, London, São Paulo, and Mexico City, he’ll be in NYC for a 30-show residency at Madison Square Garden. Ariana Grande returns to the stage too with her version of The Eras Tour. Oh, and in the world of sports, the FIFA World Cup, US Open, and British Grand Prix are all competing for our attention.

If your Instagram algorithm looks anything like mine, then chances are you’ve already been privy to the outfit changes and setlist spoilers of Ariana Grande’s Eternal Sunshine Tour. Returning after a six-and-a-half-year hiatus since the Sweetener Tour, Grande has graced us with her dazzling vocals and storytelling performances once again. Pulling from Dangerous Woman; Thank U, Next; Positions; and her latest single from the highly anticipated Petal (expected July 31), Grande takes her audience on a journey through her past eras and into the future. I’m a Jersey girl born and raised, and my father is a devoted football fan—correct, we say football in this house—so New York New Jersey Stadium hosting the FIFA World Cup 2026 finals is a truly historic moment: 48 teams, 104 matches, 16 host cities, one winner. Argentina is the returning champion after beating France in the 2022 games. All eyes will be on France’s Kylian Mbappé, Spain’s Lamine Yamal, and of course, Argentina’s Lionel Messi, who has racked up over 22 years in the sport. England and Brazil are also fan favorites.

Where to stay: The USA, Mexico, and Canada will host many of the matchups, from L.A. to Monterrey to Vancouver. But the finals? That’s New York New Jersey Stadium, baby. You’ll never find me bashing my home state, but if you’re going to make the trip to the East Coast, NYC should be your destination. The Mercer Hotel located in SoHo, or, if you’re down to get the true Jersey experience, try the George in Montclair. Though, be warned: NJ Transit will be an experience in itself. Be early and be prepared for delays.

The US Open is home to legacy names and unforgettable moments in tennis history. It is where sisters Venus and Serena Williams faced each other in the 2001 women’s final, where Billie Jean King demanded equal prize money for both men and women, and where Althea Gibson became the first Black player to compete in the US Nationals (now the US Open). Whether you attend the US Open to see or be seen, there is lots of excitement around the players (ahem, Naomi Osaka's outfits), celebrities sitting courtside, and the usual popped collars, tennis skirts, and preppy windbreakers.

Where to stay: Held in Flushing, Queens, the US Open is another NYC summer event we recommend staying in Manhattan for. The Kimberly Hotel and the Pendry Manhattan West are both a five-minute walk to the express 7 train.

What to Pack

Returning to Madison Square Garden, Harry Styles will be performing an impressive 30-show residency beginning August 26 and ending October 31. (There are rumors of another “Harryween” taking place.) His latest album release, Kiss All the Time. Disco, Occasionally, is expected to make up a majority of the setlist. “American Girls” seems like a fitting choice—you know, being in NYC and the Zoë Kravitz of it all. On the other hand, the Berlin influence is undeniable. Keep that in mind when planning your concert outfits. Think five-inch-inseam (or less) athletic shorts, an air of nonchalance, and Chanel-inspired suitings—yes, I’m talking about Styles’s 2026 BRIT Awards red carpet look and his post-SNL leopard-print Chanel Métiers d’Art 2026 jacket.

Where to stay: Having lived in Midtown NYC for many years, I recommend a neighborhood such as the East Village or the LES. The Bowery Hotel or the Standard East Village will be not only a welcoming return after the concert but also a great location for sightseeing, brunching, and shopping. That, and the atmosphere is prime for celebrity spotting.

What to Pack

It’s only been a few months of life post-"Bieberchella," and I’m already looking for my next soul-stirring performance. Lollapalooza’s lineup just might be the solution. Headliners include Lorde, Charli XCX, Olivia Dean, Jennie, Tate McRae, and that’s just to name a few. The four-day outdoor festival takes place in Downtown Chicago from July 30 to August 2. Taking into consideration this year’s Coachella fashion trends, thick belts, bikini tops, hot pants, and bug-eye sunglasses are likely to make an appearance alongside Sombr, 5 Seconds of Summer, and Little Simz, who are set to perform on day one.

Where to stay: When traveling for a music festival, convenience and discretion are key. The Silversmith Hotel and The Drake are both located in Downtown Chicago just a few minutes away from the venue, or, in the Silversmith’s case, an easy two blocks away.

What to Pack

How a fashion person does Paris: a latte from Café Nuances, a trip to Officine Universelle Buly, and an outfit pic at the Grand Palais Matisse 1941-1954 exhibit. The showcase offers views of Matisse’s later works, with over 300 paintings, textiles, stained glass, and cutout gouaches on display. Dressing for a museum visit is an art in itself. Matisse’s work is already filled with such beautiful hues; a limited color palette is perhaps best. That means elegant combinations of black and white or tapping into his Nus Bleu series by wearing cobalt-blue trousers. The exhibit will be on display now until July 26.

Where to stay: To experience Paris like a true local, discovering that hidden spot is essential. The Hôtel Madame Rêve is just that. If you prefer a more star-studded experience, the Hôtel Château Voltaire is a better fit.

What to Pack

From July 3 to 5, die-hard motorsport fans will descend on Silverstone, a town 56 miles outside London, for the oldest race on the Formula 1 calendar: the British Grand Prix. (Fun fact: Silverstone Circuit hosted the first race of the inaugural F1 World Championship all the way back in 1950.) It’s a sprint format in 2026, meaning attendees and viewers at home will get double the competitive action. There are two qualifying sessions, two races, and plenty of World Championship points to go around, though. This season, there's a high likelihood they'll all go toward Kimi Antonelli’s tally. That said, given Lewis Hamilton’s historic record in the UK, there's always a chance he makes magic happen through Maggots and Becketts. Beyond the drivers, eyes will be on celebrity and WAG sightings. Speaking of, Lily Muni He's and Alexandra Leclerc's paddock 'fits are a master class in how to dress for a Formula 1 race. And who knows, we might get a glimpse of Kim Kardashian.

Where to stay: The British Grand Prix is the perfect excuse to find a cozy place in the English countryside on Airbnb and live out your own version of The Holiday. I found this White Cottage in Abthorpe just a 10-minute drive from the circuit. But if you're up for a ride through the rolling hills, try Estelle Manor or Soho Farmhouse.

Oh, to be on a long walk in London with Harry Styles. Low-key yet chic outfits are what Zoë Kravitz has always gravitated toward, and while her aesthetic is very Brooklyn cool girl, she's been taking her effortlessly stylish vibe to gloomy London quite frequently recently. She was just photographed doing just that, walking alongside Styles with a sizable diamond ring on her finger that I'm finding it hard to ignore.

Kravitz layered a flowy trench coat over a loose button-down blouse with black pants and a simple, tan shoulder bag by The Row. She also accessorized with a navy baseball cap reading “Boy Next Door.” Her shoes, however, were the most noteworthy part of her outfit (aside from the ring, of course), and it's a trend that other celebrities such as Alex Consani have been spotted wearing as of late as well. Is it just me, or does Harry Styles’ latest outfit look distinctly French? Perhaps I’m biased—I spend a not-insignificant portion of my day scrolling through French-girl Pinterest boards and keeping tabs on my favourite Parisians in the name of styling inspiration—but I couldn’t ignore the French-fashion person energy radiating from his latest look.

Stepping out in New York, the singer leaned into a series of polished staples that French wardrobes are built on. At the foundation, a pair of mid-wash straight-leg jeans, cropped just below the ankle. Paired with a relaxed navy knit and layered over a crisp white T-shirt, Harry's simple styling felt easy but considered—the hallmarks of a great French look.

What is the essence of an internet boyfriend? That's the question I found myself asking on an average Tuesday after a conversation with Who What Wear's beauty director, Erin Jahns. We were discussing the hold that people like Jacob Elordi, Michael B. Jordan, and Pedro Pascal have over the internet. Obviously, there's an element of raw creative talent. (They're not celebrated actors, singers, and performers by accident.) There's also an element of charm. I would also add an air of mystery to the mix, as well as a unique and well-developed sense of style. All of these things contribute to the internet-boyfriend X factor.

At the end of the day, though, we're beauty editors and not psychologists, so we'll never get inside the psyche of our favorite internet boyfriends. However, we can take a more practical, almost anthropological approach by analyzing the beauty and grooming products they keep in their designer bags. Stay with me here, but I postulate that we can learn a lot about a person from their beauty routine.

Once I had my hypothesis, I did what any good beauty editor would do. I polled my colleagues on their favorite A-list actors and performers. Then, with their help, I narrowed down the list to just seven celebs who fit the internet-boyfriend bill the most. (It was difficult, but we did it.) From there, I committed myself to hard-hitting research. Weeks later, I'm pleased to present a culmination of every internet boyfriend–approved beauty product I could find, plus a few hunches and educated guesses for good measure. Enjoy.

Jacob Elordi was a shoo-in on this list from the start. In fact, almost every single member of Who What Wear's beauty team chose him as part of their top-seven internet boyfriends (myself included). He was one of the more obvious choices. After all, he's been the subject of dedicated fan accounts and in-depth articles ever since he played Noah Flynn in Netflix's The Kissing Booth. After his performances in Euphoria and Saltburn, he became an official internet BF.

He's known for his effortlessly cool and vintage-inspired style, as well as carrying an impressive array of designer bags. One of his favorites, or so it seems, is Bottega Veneta's Padded Cassette Bag, which he's been photographed wearing multiple times.

Now, for the main event—his beauty and grooming products of choice. In an interview with GQ, his hairstylist Amy Komorowski shared a selection of products she uses to create Elordi's signature tousled look, including the editor-favorite Roz Milk Hair Serum ($52) and the iconic Bumble & Bumble Surf Spray ($35). The first is a hydrating leave-in treatment, and the second is a salt spray that accentuates the hair's texture. In an interview with NewBeauty, she also shared that her "guys," aka celebs like Jacob Elordi and Austin Butler, like La Mer's iconic Lip Balm ($80).

Hairstylist and makeup artist Shannon JJ Williams also shared insight into Elordi's grooming routine on social media, posting about the products he used to prep the actor for a magazine shoot. He noted that he's a fan of Ole Henriksen's Truth Serum ($56) and Peter Thomas Roth's Cucumber De-Tox Hydra-Gel Eye Patches ($28).

What can I say about Pedro Pascal that hasn't already been said? The Chilean American actor has kept the internet on its collective toes via good-humored interviews while on press junkets and risk-taking style choices. (Tell me you haven't already forgotten about the Calvin Klein muscle tee he wore to the Cannes Film Festival photo call or the Saint Laurent thigh-high boots he wore while promoting The Last of Us.) Speaking of the Cannes Film Festival, he was spotted at the French airport carrying the Bottega Veneta Andiamo Messenger Bag. The chicest of carry-on bags!

According to Business Insider, celebrity hairstylist and groomer Coco Ullrich uses La Mer products to prep his skin ahead of appearances. (As a fan of his, I somehow feel like it makes sense that he would have a low-key luxurious skincare routine. Just look at his complexion.)

Among the products mentioned was the brand's iconic Moisturizing Soft Cream ($100), The Concentrate Serum ($225), and the Eye Concentrate Cream ($275). All of which are enriched with La Mer's proprietary Miracle Broth ingredient that moisturizes and revitalizes the skin. Ullrich also mentions the Solawave Wand, which is a four-in-one skincare device that tackles fine lines, wrinkles, dark circles, and more. And as for his signature wavy hair, Ullrich seems to use Bumble & Bumble products, specifically the brand's Semisumo Hi-Shine Pomade ($37).

ASAP Rocky is one half of the ultimate celebrity power couple. (Hi, Rihanna.) I was curious as to what beauty and/or grooming products he uses as a busy husband, father, performer, and luxury-style lover. After doing a lot of research, and I mean a lot, I learned that he keeps his cards close to his chest. Or, in his own words from an interview with The Sunday Times, "I've got to keep a couple of those a secret." He does, however, admit that his favorite products are either A) Gucci Beauty or B) Fenty Skin.

With that being said, I was able to find two fragrances he wears, a lip balm he uses, and make one educated guess. First, he's the face of Gucci's Guilty Pour Homme ($137) and wears it alongside the brand's Guilty Pour Femme ($150) because, as he put it in an interview with GQ, "I don't think [fragrance] should have any binary."

He was also featured in Fenty's campaign for the brand's Lux Balm ($16), an ultra-hydrating cherry-flavored lip balm. And because I bet Rihanna helps keep his skincare routine in check, especially when it pertains to SPF, I'm guessing he uses one of the brand's sunscreen-infused products. I'll put my money on Fenty Skin's Hydra Vizor Refillable Invisible Face Moisturizer SPF 30 ($45). Of course, he'd keep this all in one of his go-to designer bags, the Bottega Veneta Andiamo Bag.

Another Who What Wear team favorite, Jonathan Bailey was one of the only internet boyfriends who was discussed in capital letters. Why? To convey our excitement, devotion, and passion, of course. From Bridgerton to Wicked and Jurassic World Rebirth, the film and stage actor is known for his cheeky attitude, cool off-duty style, and love of Loewe, which includes the brand's viral Featherlight Puzzle Bag.

He's another internet boyfriend who leans into an aura of mystery (or, to put it another way, doesn't speak up about his personal beauty and/or grooming routine very often). However, I was able to find a few vetted product picks, including Patchology's Flash Patch Rejuvenating Eye Gels ($40) and Olay's Regenerist Whip Moisturizer With SPF 25 ($40). He told British GQ the former makes him "bright-eyed and sparkly" and the latter is an "essential."

And thanks to an InStyle interview with his costar Scarlett Johansson, I know he uses skincare products from her brand, The Outset. "He uses The Outset. He's very good with his face. He’s getting all his facials and steaming or whatever," she said. That makes sense. He seems loyal and supportive, no? I'm guessing he uses the brand's Firming & Plumping Vegan Collagen Prep Serum ($46) and Ultralight Moisture-Boosting Botanical Oil ($44).

In the words of my colleague, Michael B. Jordan is "a man of the people," or should I say, an internet boyfriend of the people? The Creed and Sinners star has a signature classic sophistication about him, which is why his previous collaboration with Coach made so much sense. While the exact pieces from said collab are out of stock (no surprise), I bet he would approve of the brand's Compass Bag 50. It has a minimalist and sleek air to it that just feels right.

He's previously admitted that he's a minimalist when it comes to his beauty-and-grooming routine, but I was able to find a few clues as to what it might look like thanks to Tasha Reiko Brown, a Chanel makeup artist and groomer. She's shared insight into some of the products she might use to get him ready for red carpet events. I'm going with Chanel's Sublimage Le Baume ($455) and Papier Matifiant De Chanel ($35).

All good writers are aware of their own bias, and my bias is, well, Harry Styles. I've been a fan of his since 2012, which is when I firmly entered my One Direction era and became not so subtly obsessed with all five members of the group. Styles, however, was always my favorite. His voice! His stage presence! His hair! Back then, he had all the makings of a teenage heartthrob. Now, he has all the makings of a good internet boyfriend (or, IRL boyfriend if you're Zoë Kravitz).

Last but certainly not least, we have to talk about Manny Jacinto, a name that's been uttered many times by my colleagues and me during our internet-boyfriend conversations. The Filipino Canadian actor is perhaps best known for his roles in The Good Place, Top Gun: Maverick, and now Freakier Friday. Thanks to his sleek personal style (and his appearance at the Sacai menswear fall 2025 show), I think he'd be a fan of Sacai's Pocket Tote Bag.

In it, I know the exact beauty and/or grooming items he'd carry. First, in an interview with Cosmo, he thanked his wife, Dianne, for getting his skin routine locked down. He mentions Tower28's cult-loved SOS Daily Rescue Spray ($28). Then he mentions a face oil from Kypris, which I'm guessing is the brand's Beauty Elixir 1 ($230). He even says he'll get into some "gua sha action" if he's "feeling spicy." Talk about a man who knows his skincare!

In an interview with GQ, he revealed he also uses IS Clinical's Active Serum ($148), saying, "Kristen Bell's makeup artist was the one who told me to try this. It minimizes pores, which is good because I have large-ass pores. It's definitely made a difference in how my skin looks on the day-to-day and also on the camera." He also notes Kiehl's Facial Fuel Lip Balm, which is sadly out of stock. He strikes me as a conscientious and intentional person, so this simple yet effective skincare routine makes sense.

It’s no big revelation that Harry Styles—as his name so serendipitously implies—is a, well, stylish guy. From sharp Gucci suits to barely there tiny shorts and slim sneakers, the man not only cranks out outfit bangers one after another but has demonstrated some serious range. In recent days, his fashion bona fides have been further confirmed thanks to a series of images that have blessed our eyeballs as the musician continues to step out with actress Zoë Kravitz. Last week, he was spotted in a pair of sky-blue straight-fit jeans, a slightly cropped long-sleeve T-shirt (revealing just an inch of tattooed midriff), and loafers—a look that matched Kravitz, wordlessly confirming speculation that the duo are, in fact, an item. All of this is to say we very much encourage you to take your fall outfit cues from Styles. Namely, go out and find a few variations on some core pieces—a long-sleeve T-shirt, say, or a low-profile shoe—and build a wardrobe around them. It makes getting dressed that much easier and helps you establish a defined look for yourself, a type of uniform to be known by. From there, evolving said look—adding a sweater over the shoulders for when it’s cool, tossing on a chore coat, or even swapping out the sneakers for a dress shoe—means that you’ll always look like yourself.

A spin-off of low-rise baggy jeans, these sans-waistband jeans are effortless and cool, and the brand she opted for—Still Here—is on every fashion person's radar and in many of their closets. The NYC-based brand recently released a no-waistband style called the Sport Jeans. They quickly went viral and sold out but have since been restocked in Kravitz's classic blue wash. Before the debut of the Sport Jeans, Still Here released another no-waistband style coined the Cool Jeans, which feature a tie at the waist, so you could say the brand has played quite the hand in making this trend a thing as of late.

In the Venn diagram of my personal interests, emerging trainer trends and Harry Styles occupy two steady circles—and this week, the unexpected happened: they overlapped! Spotted wearing the very new-season pair I’ve been eyeing since their launch in spring, Styles has officially co-signed one of this summer’s buzziest shoes.

Not hailing from your usual suspects like Nike or Adidas, these trainers come courtesy of Maison Margiela. The brand’s new Sprinter trainers (£690) are quietly emerging as one of the season’s most important styles. With Harry Styles now in the mix—and Jacob Elordi already spotted wearing his pair on repeat during a recent trip to Italy—this trend is building momentum right now. I've been a beauty editor for just under 10 years and a Harry Styles fan for even longer. (Cut to me circa 2012 blasting a well-worn One Direction CD in my car on the way to school.) Despite this, I've never ventured into the world of Pleasing—Harry Styles's beauty-and-lifestyle brand. I know, I know. That makes me a bad fan and an even worse beauty editor. Lately, no matter what I put in the morning, I seem to get it wrong. We’ve moved past wool coat season, yet the gusty winds make going without a layer impractical. Stylist Harry Lambert is one of the shining stars on the London fashion scene, as he has worked with Harry Styles to craft his showman aesthetic and encouraged Emma Corrin to consistently push boundaries on the red carpet. With his powerful position in popular culture and unique, playful take on fashion, it’s not surprising that Zara chose to collaborate with Lambert on a second joy-filled collection, after a successful first partnership last year.

"Just let me adore you" seems to be the guiding principle behind Gucci's latest collaboration with Harry Styles. The entire campaign, conceived by the brand's creative director, Alessandro Michele, is a feast for the eyes for Styles's millions of fans around the world as well as fashion devotees everywhere. 

Originally presented in June of this year, the HA HA HA collection (a combo of the initials of "Harry" and "Alessandro," notes the press release) is the result of close collaboration between the two creative minds. "I'm so happy to see this project finally come to life," shared Styles. "I've known Alessandro for years now, and he's always been one of my favorite people. I'm always inspired watching him work, so doing this collaboration with my friend was very special to me."

Embracing the gender fluidity of Styles's personal aesthetic, most items in this collaboration are intentionally unisex. While footwear and T-shirts may be categorized as "men's" and handbags as "women's," these labels serve more as an e-commerce default rather than a de facto wardrobe guide. And honestly, we're game. If the shoe, shirt, handbag, or scarf fits, then wear it.

The business of Hollywood is, of course, the suspension of disbelief. But it takes a truly talented actor to transcend time, space, gender, and genre from one role to the next. For 26-year-old Emma Corrin, however, this constant metamorphosis is quickly becoming routine. 

Corrin, who is British and nonbinary, began acting in 2017 and won viewers’ hearts and critics’ praise around the world for their portrayal of Princess Diana in the fourth season of The Crown on Netflix. Now, Corrin’s latest project, My Policeman, places them in a similarly recognized yet less universally revered role: the 1950s housewife.

Streaming on Amazon Prime Video in early November, My Policeman premiered last month at the Toronto International Film Festival and features modern-day global icon Harry Styles in the titular role of a young policeman named Tom. Corrin plays Marion, Styles’s sweet but naïve wife, who is an unknowing third wheel in the romantic relationship that is at the center of the film. While it is not quite love at first sight for Marion and Tom, the rapport between the actors came easily—they had met prior to filming thanks to their mutual stylist, Harry Lambert. "We were friends before, so it was really nice,” shared Corrin over Zoom. "I knew that we’d have a great time, and if you’re working with people you like, it’s always gonna be a positive experience.”

Both Corrin and Styles are known for their fluid fashion sensibilities, which makes it interesting to see them play opposite each other in such traditionally gendered roles and costumes. Marion, a young teacher, spends most of the film in knee-length skirts and cardigan sweaters befitting of the post-war era. Yet both Corrin and I liked Marion’s retro swimwear the best. "The costumes are wonderful, and we had a great time doing very collaborative work with the costume department,” they explained. "You get to a certain point after thinking about the character, and then the costumes are the last piece of the puzzle for me.” In fact, the entire seaside town of Brighton felt like a character itself with so many extras on the beach in period-appropriate attire, providing a moment of levity in an otherwise shadow-encased film.

Fashion, no matter the era, plays a significant role not only in Corrin’s transformations on-screen but also in their public presentation of self. Seen on the August issue of Vogue, Corrin—the first nonbinary person to appear on the cover in the magazine’s history—was clad in a sparkily Louis Vuitton tank dress and classic New York Yankees baseball cap. Their signature style was front and center again on the TIFF red carpet, where Corrin stunned in a custom bikini-cut Miu Miu bodysuit with billowing sleeves and a flowing train, iridescent makeup, and sheer tights—no pants. "My Miu Miu family is incredible, and I love the stuff they’re doing,” effused Corrin, who is the face of the brand’s current campaign. "The recent collection is so fluid and really boundary pushing. That’s something I really love, and I’m really grateful to be involved.”

While Corrin tends to favor more avant-garde looks on the red carpet, the star is equally at home in the ’70s and ’80s silhouettes that color their off-duty style. In fact, Corrin sports an original Harry Lambert design during our video call—a graphic sweatshirt with a large snail motif—which they proudly showed off during our conversation. Although the duo has only been collaborating since early 2020, it’s clear that Corrin and Lambert speak the same sartorial language. "[Lambert] is a really close friend, and we know each other very well. There’s so much trust here, and he loves pushing me out of my comfort zone, and I sort of go wherever it leads me,” Corrin mused. "But also, he knows me very well. And that’s pretty relaxing.”

It’s obvious when you think about it: Corrin is such a chameleon on the red carpet that it only makes sense that they would look equally at home portraying the people’s princess or a humble housewife on-screen. I can’t wait to see how their character choices and style evolution transform next.

Unless you live under a rock or haven’t been online in the past month, the highly anticipated film Don’t Worry Darling has been on your radar one way or another.

The psychological thriller set in the ’50s, which first premiered at Venice Film Festival, follows a couple living in a utopian town called Victory. Upon first glance, the pristine suburban setting is perfect—or seemingly so. When a few of its inhabitants start to question their idyllic life and the Victory Project, no one seems to be able to explain. The fabulous and brilliant Florence Pugh steals the show in more ways than one as Alice Chambers, the inquisitive suburban housewife to Jack Chambers, who is played by Harry Styles.

The film features a star-studded cast and boasts an intensely thrilling story line, but above all else, it is visually stunning. I left the film wanting to re-create every look, and I was mesmerized by the tailored suits, the attention to detail, the retro prints, the colorful sets, and the quintessential imprint that the ’50s and ’60s have left on fashion forever.

In order to convey such a controlled-yet-alluring society of perfection, you have to bring in the best of the best, which is why director and actress Olivia Wilde—who stars as Bunny in the film—called in three-time Oscar-nominated costume designer Arianne Phillips. Prior to Don’t Worry Darling, Phillips worked her magic on iconic films such as Walk the Line, Girl, Interrupted (my personal favorite), and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. 

I had the privilege of chatting with Phillips about her creative process on DWD, from drawing visual references of the ’50s to creating the look for each character. Only she can make a patriarchy-driven yet disturbingly perfect society look as ravishing as it did through her impeccable designs. Not to be dramatic, but the looks were pretty iconic, and I’m almost certain that these costumes will be talked about for decades to come. Oh, and don’t worry, darlings. There are no spoilers ahead. 

What were your early conversations with Wilde like when discussing the wardrobe for the film?

I choose to do a script based on who the director is. Every director is different. Most directors are men, and they don’t always have the vernacular to talk about nuance when it comes to clothes and costumes. Costumes are part of the storytelling process in helping develop character, and they help underscore tone and mood. There are so many nuances that we can help underscore in the film, and Olivia as an actress really understands that. She understands the visual cues and the character development but also what a costume can do. When an actor puts it on, it’s almost like it transports them to a different time period. We all know what it’s like to put something vintage on—you actually stand different. In this case, we were using undergarments from the ’50s and ’60s, which affects how the actor moves. … Our conversations were about her visual mood boards. It was a visual document that we would add and subtract as time went on. It started with a lot of visual references, and her references were very sophisticated. It had referenced beautiful photography from the ’50s and ’60s along with references that I knew and loved.

Our early conversations were about how she saw each character and what their motivations were. One of the things I love about Olivia is that she was up for the conversation. A movie like this, we’re making it up. We talked about the music they listened to, the food they ate. We create a full life for these characters, which helps inform me. On top of that, we talked about larger themes like control, a woman’s voice, the patriarchy, and serious themes that ran throughout the film. [We also discussed] what would be beautiful in the way that Matthew Libatique, who is our beautiful cinematographer, was going to light the film.

The conversations were continuous all of the time. They would be in person and on Zoom. All of the conversations in the beginning were on Zoom. We were supposed to start in March 2020, and then COVID hit, but we stayed super connected throughout lockdown. Even with costumes, they thought COVID could be transferred … so we had to figure out elaborate mechanisms of sanitizing them. 

As a true lover of vintage, I know that the themes in this time period were bright colors like mint, warm and pastel yellows, turquoise, etc. Alice Chambers, played by Florence Pugh, wore softer colors in the film, such as the beautiful white dress at dinner and the peach dress at the Victory party. On the other hand, Bunny, played by Olivia Wilde, looks bolder, and her looks were quite captivating in the film. What was the inspiration behind the bright color palette? Do you typically enjoy creating costumes for these iconic eras in fashion? 

Walk the Line was a biopic, and this movie wasn’t real. With this film, we got to take a cinematic license. It was an idyllic community, Victory. We shot exteriors in California with the beautiful light, so I wanted to lean into color. I wanted to be sparingly into color. Colors are great for setting a time period. It takes place in the early ’50s and ’60s, which is a changing time.

How did the mindset/attitudes of each of the characters influence their wardrobe choices?

Bunny’s character is more ’50s, and that was because she loves Victory. She’s totally invested in living there. Alice is forward-thinking and more in the ’60s. I wanted to design the film for a contemporary eye. I wanted the audience to live the dream as well, and I wanted to make it about pieces that had relevance today. For instance, Jack’s suits. A lot of the costumes would look [as] chic today as they did then, and that was pretty purposeful. I wanted the audience to be seduced by Victory as well.

The film is set and filmed in Palm Springs, and it reflects an idyllic environment with perfect housewives and perfect husbands. What was your process of reflecting that environment at all times in the film through the costumes? 

It was in the script for sure, and it was looking at these larger things like control and patriarchy. It was looking at these larger stories and the patriarchy and when women had societal norms. In different cultures, this still exists, where women’s voices take a back seat to a patriarchal society. The way the women are dressed and the way the men dress themselves is through a male gaze. We looked at the Rat Pack era and Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr., and you can see it reflected in that crisp, clean look that’s pretty desirable. The women in Victory are glamorous at all times by doing housework and looking gorgeous, which is unrealistic. This is when the gender norms were binary. That was something that was normal for our grandparents, so this is a concept in the script that we can show through the costumes.

How much time did you have to prepare all of the styles/outfits for DWD? What did the creative process look like for you? How much of the clothes were sourced from vintage and prop houses vs. designed for the film?

Because it was a challenging time with COVID, all of my normal resources weren’t available for me. I usually source vintage from a list of people nationally and internationally, but during COVID, a lot of places were closed. We would set up our own flea markets here in Los Angeles, and there, vintage dealers were set up outside. A lot of the inspiration came from real vintage, and I sourced a lot of vintage fashion for Jack’s suits and Alice’s dresses. Two-thirds of their costumes were built and designed, and a portion were vintage and sourced. For the most part, I made things for certain background actors, like the shopping scenes, and there are scenes that don’t make the cut. 

The ladies in the film truly stole the show and delivered remarkable performances. Jack Chambers, played by Harry Styles, was also very likable, but I’m still thinking about how great he looked in every outfit. I couldn’t help but notice the detail in all of Jack’s looks, from the bowling shirts to tailor-made suits. His looks among the rest were absolutely perfect and fitting, especially the blue/black cardigan with the trousers (loved it). I feel like he would even wear that ’fit in real life. How was it working on Styles’s looks throughout the transitions of the film? How involved was Styles in terms of building out Jack’s look?

Harry was a dream to work with. He was very open and generous with the time he gave to the multiple fittings, as there were quite a few costume changes. In our first meeting, which was on Zoom, I shared images from my character book I had made for Jack, and we spoke about the overall tone and feeling of the film. Oftentimes, an actor’s "entry” into the film is via a costume fitting, which usually precedes rehearsals and the camera tests. 

Frank, played by the one and only Chris Pine, was the boss and the leader of the mysterious company. His presence ignited fear in his employees even though his looks were more casual than the other characters. How were you able to convey that with his costumes in the film? I feel like the blouse in menswear is making a comeback. Do you see casual menswear making a comeback?

Chris was a lot of fun to collaborate with. He had thought a lot about his character and how he would dress. We had some really lively and fun conversations around the choices we would make for his character. Chris wanted Frank to be barefoot at home at his party, which is really something that would have been highly unusual at the time, but I loved it as a character choice, and it really felt like something Frank would have done that was just a little "off” and, at the same time, unnerving to his guests. We do see him at leisure at home, but we also see him in a cocktail suit when he and Shelly come to Alice and Jack’s for dinner and, of course, his formal white-dinner-jacket look at the party. We had ample opportunity to really dive into Frank and his many different looks.

I'm a bit of a film buff, so you better believe that I live for the Venice Film Festival. Perhaps it's the gondolas or, more likely, the sheer fashion fest that the attendees put on for us every night, but there's something about the glittering Italian event that makes it feel incredibly special—sorry, Cannes. And tonight, it's gone more A-list than ever with the glory that is the Don't Worry Darling premiere—arguably the most hotly anticipated screening of the whole festival. Why? Its incredible cast and crew; namely, Harry Styles, Florence Pugh, and Olivia Wilde. 

The anticipation for this film has been palpable ever since the first teasers were released over a year ago and, even before that, when the controversial casting was released. Of course, I've already carved out a date to see it when it's released later in the month, but my excitement just might have peaked this evening when the images of the premiere started to trickle through.

I knew Styles would treat us to something spectacular, and he certainly held up his end of the bargain in a midnight-blue, flared-trouser suit and cornflower pointed-collar shirt, accessorised with white shoes, retro sunglasses (all by Gucci, naturally), gold rings, and a pastel manicure. Pleasing indeed. Then, there's fashion darling and, in my opinion, one of the A-list's freshest dressers, Florence Pugh, who took the naked-dress trend to the next level with her off-the-shoulder Valentino Haute Couture creation of tulle and sequins. As a fellow petite girl, I fully support her choice of stacked-platform, bow-adorned heels. Then, there's the film's director, Olivia Wilde, whose flowing yellow Gucci gown was challenged in its beauty by only her diamond jewellery.

Next Up: The Most Incredible Red Carpet Looks From the 2022 Venice Film Festival

When I first caught wind of the fact Harry Styles was launching a beauty brand, I had mixed feelings. Typically, I’m pretty against celebrity beauty brands because I don’t believe that the world of beauty needs any more products added to it. If you’d have asked me five years ago what I imagined a Harry Styles beauty line would look like, I would have assumed it would be the sort of thing you’d pick up three for two in Boots at Christmas and that it would come with a free sticker book.

But times have changed. It’s 2021, and Harry Styles is a style icon. A style icon with a great nail polish game, might I add. So when a big box of product with accompanying merch (a sweater that has garnered a lot of interest on social media but sadly isn't available to purchase) landed on my desk at the start of the week, I was actually kind of excited.

Introducing Pleasing. Comprising four nail polishes, an illuminating face serum and a dual-ended eye serum and lip oil, it’s clear that Pleasing showcases nonbinary beauty at its finest. Less of a celeb-endorsed cash cow and more of a celebration of beauty across the board, Pleasing is clearly no gimmick. In fact, the whole premise of the brand has the potential to flip the beauty industry on its head.

"Starting the brand with beauty felt exciting because creating great products is a unique way to make people feel good,” says Styles. "I didn’t want to make products to mask people, I wanted to highlight them and make them feel beautiful,” he adds. The brand encompasses the emotional connotations of beauty, tapping into the limitations and expectations that the industry as we know it sets, and it chucks out the rule book in an admirably simple way.

And then we move on to the aesthetics. The products are almost painfully pretty. From the marble-topped nail polishes to the iridescent pearls housed in the serum, they’re the sort of products you want to leave out on your dressing table as ornaments. In a recent interview with Dazed, Styles said, "I really think that the essence of Pleasing is finding those little moments of joy and showing them to people.”

From a beauty editor’s perspective, the products themselves are impressive. The nail polishes are long-lasting and need minimal coats, and the formula is made from plant-based solvents, making it much better for the planet in terms of disposal and removal. Designed to be worn alone or layered with Pearly Tops (a clear shade with an iridescent finish), they are notably beautiful.

The Pearlescent Illuminating Serum isn’t quite what I was expecting. It’s marketed as a hydrating serum, but I’d liken it more to an illuminating primer. With vitamin B and hydrating beta-glucan, it can be used on its own, but as a skincare aficionado, I’d recommend it as a post-skincare routine add-on. The results, however, are stunning. The finish isn’t dewy (hence I’d recommend a hydrating product underneath), but rather smoothing and blurring. The encapsulated synthetic mica pearls deliver a subtle glow and very minor shimmer that had people complimenting my makeup-less skin all day.

And finally, we come to The Pleasing Pen. And honestly, I’m a little miffed. The pen is dual-ended, housing an eye serum on one end and a lip oil on the other, dispensed through matching steel rollerballs. The eye serum is exquisite. Formulated with olive oil–derived squalane to hydrate, hibiscus extract to smooth and lingonberry to lift and tighten, it makes for the ultimate morning pick-me-up. It provides a refreshingly cooling result that wakes you up in seconds.

My only real gripe with the entire Pleasing range so far is with the lip oil. As someone who has very dry lips, I wanted it to be a super-hydrating formula that softened and plumped—but it’s not. The ingredients are all there (think vitamin E to nourish and marshmallow extract to soothe), but the execution isn’t. The rollerball doesn’t dispense enough product, and the formula is a little thin and watery. Having said that, if you don’t suffer from dry lips, you might disagree.

All in all, I think Pleasing is destined for greatness. Sure, I have a tendency to analyse every Harry Styles move as though I’m writing a thesis on his role in pop culture, but I genuinely believe that Pleasing is doing something that the beauty industry has overlooked for so long. It’s a forward-thinking brand that actually thinks.

It’s not claiming to be perfect—it’s open, honest and is trying its best to act inclusively and sustainably without getting hung up on nuances. Harry Styles, I loved you as the curly haired teenager in One Direction, but I love you even more as a style icon and game-changing beauty mogul.

Don't Worry Darling is already one of the buzziest films of the year, even though it's many months from being released. The reason? The cast, which includes 2021's first new It couple: Olivia Wilde (who also directs the film) and Harry Styles (pictured above, on set). For several months now, they've been filming around Los Angeles and Palm Springs, and they just wrapped production, which was capped off with a wrap party. The significance of this wrap party is that the aforementioned couple was, of course, in attendance. 

There's a sole photo from the wrap party, posted by one of the actors, and in it you'll see Styles and Wilde standing next to each other, notably wearing matching white hoodies. It's a basic so it likely wasn't planned, but it just goes to show that their styles are very much in sync. The first time I saw Lakeith Stanfield on screen, it was in FX’s breakout show Atlanta. Since that moment, I’ve remained intrigued. Not everyone can nab a coveted ticket to Gucci's runway shows, but you have full access to the iconic brand's newest imaginative endeavor, GucciFest. Creative Director Alessandro Michele envisioned the weeklong online film festival as a way to inject some happiness during "this time of tears when the order of things wavers and the night seems to enshroud everything," as Michele said in a statement. The program included a seven-part film directed by Michele and Gus Van Sant (of Good Will Hunting fame) and 15 short films by rising designers such as New York's Collina Strada and Stockholm's Rave Review. 

"For a week, a swarm of eccentric and vital stories will run through the festival," Michele said in a statement. "Stories made of imaginative bursts and oneiric gestures. Stories focused on the human. I have always thought about the power of the stories, about the nourishment they offer not to surrender to the sleep of language, about their ability to expand our own possibility to think about who we are."

Harry Styles is a man of many talents, from his acting (yes, I'm also counting his Saturday Night Live performances) to his albums that we all can't stop listening to. You might have thought that as fashion editors, our main source of wardrobe inspiration would be the catwalks, street style or even Instagram, but currently, the title is sitting with none other than former boy-band member Harry Styles. Yes, we continue to surprise ourselves daily.

All of my non-fashion friends have admittedly been slightly baffled by Mr Styles’ "lewks” recently, often sending pictures to me (knowing full well I’m a lifelong member of the Styles fan club) asking whether I’m into his outfit consisting of a wide-leg suit and ruffled-blouse. I’m sure they expect a disappointed "I preferred his skinny jeans and headbands” reply, but, well, the answer is yes. Yes, we’re on board with Harry’s solo career style, and yes, if the whole Who What Wear UK fashion team could switch wardrobes with any celebrity right now, it would probably be him. If only we could also steal some of his confidence with it.

I mean, what self-respecting fashion girl wouldn’t want a dozen bespoke Gucci suits in her closet? Throw in some Marni, Marc Jacobs and a jacket from the new cult brand Bode, and it sounds very much like our dream fashion week wardrobe.
