Long live maxi skirts and micro-shades—two staples of '90s style. Between Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy's New York street style and Miuccia Prada's pre-smartphone runways, the time period between 1990 and 1999 may be my favorite yet. Although I didn't exactly live through it as a Gen Z fashion editor, every scroll on Pinterest provides me more and more opportunities to channel my inner Kate Moss and Julia Roberts, two leading ladies of the decade.

After several years of all things ’90s retaking fashion and beauty trends, it seems a natural progression that the 2000s followed suit. But if the ’90s were known for sleek, minimalist looks, the decade after them was known for just the opposite. "Hair in the 2000s was wild because everyone was trying to do something a little different that no one had seen before,” says celebrity hairstylist and Color Wow artistic director Joseph Maine. "There were really no limits and people were experimenting with different textures and accessories. It was a playful time for style.” And playful is right. From dramatic hair colors to iconic (and unique) haircuts, hair in the early aughts was in a beauty league of its own.

Although some of today’s fashion icons like Bella Hadid and Megan Thee Stallion are no doubt inspired by this time in fashion and beauty history, it’s evident that some styles may stay firmly in the past. Lopez famously topped off her braided hairstyle at the 2000 MTV VMAs with a white bedazzled bandana that matched her outfit.

Berry’s is arguably one of the all-time great short haircuts from any era. "That pixie cut will really never go out of style, especially if you have the bone structure that Halle does,” says Maine. 

Good news for Kelly: Her two-tone hair color is making its way back again, with celebs like J.Lo and Dua Lipa wearing the look recently. 

Good news if you still love Avril’s slick-straight look. "Straight, glossy hair really never goes out of style,” says Maine, who recommends using a smoothing treatment like Color Wow Dream Coat ($30) "to give thermal protection and add a ton of shine.”

The late singer-actress was ahead of every trend she wore, from her ombré hair color to her deep side part—a look that dominated the decade (sorry, Gen Z).

"This was an iconic hairstyle that was rarely replicated well,” says Maine of Aguilera’s multitonal look. "The sort of preciseness and choppiness of the cut and extensions helped give this a bit of edge.”

The crimper may have peaked in the ’80s, but it held on through the early aughts as evidenced by Tyra (and her smize).

Brandy’s contributions to millennium-era prom styles can’t be overstated. Case in point: This gorgeous upswept braid bun, which would have looked perfect for the occasion.

She flirted with pink, blue, and even brunette, but Gwen’s bleach blonde was one of the most iconic hair colors of the time (it even caught the attention of Martin Scorcese, who gave her the role of Jean Harlow in The Aviator). 

The rapper made her signature short haircut even more of a statement look by dyeing it shades like lavender and red to match her red carpet looks.

Keri’s haircut in season 2 of Felicity caused ratings to drop, as well as actual death threats. In hindsight, though, her character was going through a breakup (who hasn’t been there?), and also, she looked pretty great! 

The megastar has worn her hair in countless styles, but her long, Destiny’s Child–era waves set the tone for her look for years to come.

Don’t go pulling your Bump-It out of storage just yet, says Maine. "The poof is not coming back anytime soon," He says, however, "Pulling the fringe area back a bit more sleek is a great way to modernize this look and even add some fullness to the crown area.”

"The piecey bangs with some hair half-up is definitely back In style,” says Maine, adding that he’d leave "the additional peek-a-boo braids” back in 2000.

Seemingly every celeb wore this gravity-defying blow-out—extra layered hair required. Also, a moment of appreciation for how little Gabrielle Union has changed since this photo, from the 2001 NAACP Image Awards was taken.

For a brief moment in the early aughts, Farrah Fawcett’s iconic hairdo came back in style. Of course, Gisele pulled the look off with aplomb. 

This particular shade of dark red hair color only existed in the years 1999–2002. We don’t make the rules!

Along with her impossibly low-rise jeans, Brit’s love of headwear became one of her most notable style trademarks.

It’s the future she can see? With some slight styling adjustments, Raven’s Louis Vuitton logo scarf is just as in-demand today.

Blame LiLo for all our questionable side bangs circa 2003. Maine says it’s actually a great transition style: "I think side bangs are on the horizon with so many girls cutting curtain bangs recently,” predicts the hairstylist, adding that "The best way to grow them is by blending them into a bit of a side bang.”

Mischa’s O.C.-era waves would make Marissa Cooper proud. "This wavy texture is back in full force,” says Maine. "The best way to modernize this a bit is by using a waver with a [barrel] slightly larger than what Mischa used.”

"Age is just a number, and I have never felt defined by it," Berry says. "It is a bit frustrating that people want to place so much emphasis on the age of women. Somehow, it feels a bit degrading, like it puts us at a disadvantage. Men get older, and they get sexier, but women just get old. I think that the older we get, the better we become. We just have to convince ourselves of that fact because I absolutely believe it to be true!"

Hey, we need to talk about Halle Berry. There's one thing that quickly becomes clear after even a brief scan of Berry's Instagram: She works out… a lot. The actress uses the hashtag #FitnessFriday to share workouts alongside her trainer Peter Lee Thomas, and the two can be seen doing everything from jumping rope for cardio to bodyweight workouts to Muay Thai training and even yoga. Berry is so committed to her fitness that she recently launched an online platform dedicated to all things wellness, Re-Spin. "From age 16 on, I've worn sunscreen. I use SPF 30 because I don't think the higher SPFs are necessarily more effective," she said. Berry has never been shy about sharing that famed celebrity facialist Olga Lorencin is her go-to skin guru. In interview after interview for years now, she's called out Lorencin's magic hands and skincare know-how as the most important contributors to her glowy, radiant, and ageless complexion. "Over the years, everybody has always said to me, 'How does your skin look like that? What's the magic? What's the secret?' And I've said along the way, well, her name is Olga," Berry said in a recent one-on-one sit down video with the facialist on Instagram. One of the pillars of Lorencin's skincare philosophy? Exfoliation. "I always say that your serum and moisturizer are laughing at you if you don't have [your] skin exfoliated first," Lorencin said during the aforementioned video. "The long-term glow—doesn't matter if you're 18 or 75 or 85—will come from a really good, carefully selected exfoliation."

Berry shared via Instagram Stories earlier this year that an LED light mask by Dr. Dennis Gross is her "personal favorite." And based on her smooth complexion, we'd say it's working.

9. She Drinks Tea Instead of Alcohol… Sometimes

Another low-key trick that's had a hand in Berry's flawless complexion? She doesn't indulge in excessive amounts of alcohol! Now, there's nothing wrong with a responsible glass or two of your favorite libation, but we've been told by expert dermatologists that alcohol is one of the biggest instigators of dry skin. Not only that, but the presence of alcohol in the system can make it harder for your body to rehydrate, and thus, fine lines and wrinkles have an even better shot at settling into the skin. When we came across an interview where Berry said that she doesn't really indulge in alcohol and that she's never smoked or done drugs (a regular Girl Scout!), we had a major lightbulb moment. Berry has since admitted, in a series of Instagram Stories, that she is a fan of sulfate-free, low-sugar wines. But more often than not, the beverage she routinely poses with is a cup of hot tea. We're not sure if there's any science to suggest that tea has any bearing on gorgeous skin, but if Berry is a fan, then we're down for high tea, too. And maybe we'll even give the clean wine thing a try.

10. She Feeds Her Skin With Healthy Food

For Berry, healthy eating is about way more than maintaining her svelte physique. She's spoken candidly about the diabetes diagnosis she received at age 22 and how adhering to the keto diet has helped her manage the condition. She takes to her personal Instagram and Re-Spin regularly to share recipes, cooking tutorials, and easy, healthy eats with her audience. Driven by a deep love of fragrance from a young age and an article she read about Prince (you’ll have to tune in for that story), Price spent her time off from the long hours of television production experimenting with layering scents and formulating her own recipes for lotions and other personal-care products. It wasn’t until 1993, when her mother, Carol, nudged her to sell her Fragrant Moisture Butters—as she called them at the time—at a local flea market, that Price met her first customers, who quickly bought up her entire inventory. 

Her products were an immediate hit, but that doesn’t mean scaling the business came easy. Among the challenges of any startup, Price had an additional factor working against her. An improperly filed tax document in her past meant that for years, Carol’s Daughter was unable to secure business credit or outside investment, a constraint that forced the brand to grow solely by the means of its own profit. Though expansion was slow and steady in the early days, word spread quickly as products like Black Vanilla Hair Smoothie and Love Butter found brand evangelists to the tune of Jada Pinkett Smith, Halle Berry, and yes, Oprah. Eventually, Price made the decision to leave the world of television behind, and Carol’s Daughter went from side hustle to bona fide business. 

Turning a passion project into a nationally distributed beauty brand and a full-time profession is what many of us would consider "the dream.” But when Lisa Price started experimenting with aromatherapy oils out of her Brooklyn apartment in the early ’90s, that was far from the plan. At the time, Price was working in the television industry as a production coordinator on programs such as The Cosby Show and Here and Now, a profession that she not only adored but also credits with cultivating a creative passion that would eventually fuel the inception of her multicultural beauty brand, Carol’s Daughter. "I think part of it developed because my television gigs were enjoyable. So when I did have time off, I didn't feel that immense need to just escape. … I had energy,” she tells Hillary Kerr in this week’s episode of Second Life.

In 2014, Price faced another pivotal moment when Carol’s Daughter was acquired by L’Oréal, after a two-year process that Price describes as transformational for both the growth of the brand and herself personally: "I became a stronger person and better able to deal with those ups and downs. … So when I got put into that process of due diligence, whoa. I was ready.” Since the acquisition, the brand’s footprint has expanded nationwide, available in major retailers including Ulta, Target, and Sally Beauty.

When asked what advice Price would give to others looking to navigate changes in their own careers, her answer illustrates an ethos she’s honed throughout the years: balancing practicality and intuition. "I don’t think you can discern what you should do when you’re in a place of chaos. … Be still and be quiet and allow yourself time to think. And then when you start to think about things, write them down,” she says.

She’s back! And by she, I mean my mom, who—personal bias or not­—both gives excellent shopping advice and, of course, has great taste. She might be a woman of few words (as you’ll soon discover below), but what she does have to say is definitely worth a listen.

Since she recently turned 57 years young and is chicer than ever, I figured I’d ask her for her take on who the most stylish celebs over 50 are these days and why. Some, like J.Lo, probably won’t surprise you at all since they’re constantly the spotlight, while others, such as former French first lady Carla Bruni or Oscar winner and Dame Helen Mirren, will have you wanting to keep an eye on them moving forward. Is it just me or do some celebrities appear to be aging in reverse? Like the fact that J.Lo just turned 50 completely blows my mind—she looks exactly the same as she did in her "Jenny From the Block" days. I can only hope to look as good as these women in the future, so I've recently started to pay close attention to their habits and routines, and I noticed they all have a few things in common.

Considering everything from their at-home beauty routines to their fitness regimens, there are a few things I've identified as the keys to their youthful auras that are worth discussing. From simple exercise to complicated accessories like LED light masks, if these methods work this well for the following celebs, I'm open to trying all of them. Below are the seven beauty secrets of the most youthful-looking celebrities, from Jennifer Aniston to Halle Berry. 

1. They swear by sun protection.

The number one thing any celebrity, dermatologist, or esthetician will tell you about anti-aging is sun protection. And this doesn't just mean SPF—it also means large hats, sunglasses, and cover-ups during sunny beach or pool days. 

2. They fake a tan instead.

Not only do celebs prioritize sunscreen, but they prefer to fake their glowing tans altogether to avoid unnecessary sun exposure. Jennifer Aniston even told Redbook that she was obsessed with L'Oréal's Sublime Bronze Self-Tanning Towelettes. 

3. They recognize the importance of masking.

Celebrities who seem to have found the fountain of youth make no secret of their at-home masking routines—they are diligent about applying the right masks in between facial appointments. Working Out Is Mind Over Matter

When asked how to get and stay motivated to work out, especially when you're having a bad day or trying to become a morning-workout person, Berry says it's all in your head. "Many of these concepts around fitness, you have to just decide to do. There's no magic; there's no formula. You have to just make up your mind: 'This is important to me. This is the time I can do it, and this is when I'm going to do it.' Just force yourself to do it in the beginning until it becomes a habit, or until it becomes something you look forward to doing," she says.

Try New Workouts Instead of Doing the Same Thing Every Day

"I think working out every day is a good thing. The same workout every day? Here's the thing: You can do that, and you'll get to a certain place, and you'll plateau. You won't keep growing. What I've learned from Peter is that every day our workouts are different so that keeps challenging the muscles in new ways. I continue to have growth and I continue to reach my goals. It's up to you to decide. Do the same workout, I think you get complacent, and your body gets to a point and stays the same," Berry says.

Don't Count Calories

"I hate it. I never count calories—ever, ever, ever. I don't weigh myself, and I don't count calories. I think that's what gets me spinning out of control when I count calories, measure food, and weigh myself every day. I just eat healthy; I follow the ketogenic lifestyle. As long as I feel good in my body, who cares what I weigh? It's about feeling good—for me," she says.

Berry does recommend learning more about caloric intake, how much you should eat, so that you can "get that in your mind visually and then strive to do that every day."

It's Okay to Get Crafty With Some Fitness Hacks

You don't have to have the fanciest gym gear at your disposal to get a good workout in. In one of Berry's Instagram stories, her recovery coach, Sun Lee, shared that a foam roller is a fitness essential, but if you don't have one at the ready, you can use a frozen water bottle.

In another #FitnessFriday Instagram Story, she and her trainer showed five parallel-bar exercises—that you can do without going to a gym because you can use bar stools. Genius!

Stretching Is Important

What you do before and after you exercise is important, too. Berry said that while she was training for her role in John Wick: Chapter 3, her body was put through the wringer. What helped was working with a strength coach before and after her routines. "Recovering after a workout is just as important as an actual workout," she says.

Books Can Help With Mental Health

When asked what helps her stay mentally tough, Berry said books are key for her: "I go to books. That's what makes me stay mentally tough. I still have the need to read a book, not on my computer screen or not on my phone." Three books she recommends are Do One Thing Every Day That Centers You (a journal that helps her think about the things that really matter), How to Break Up With Your Phone (which stops her from comparing herself to others on social media), and How to Love (which helps her with self-love and loving others around her, her work, art, and nature).

Exercise = Glowing Skin

At 53, she looks like she's found the fountain of youth, but one secret to her amazing skin? Regular exercise. "I do believe that exercise is so related to healthy skin and how you not only feel but how you look. Cardio, cardio, cardio. Getting the blood running through your body is so good for your complexion. I've seen how my skin has changed over the years from more cardio. A good sweat and your cheeks get naturally flushed—that's so good for your skin," she says.
