Miles Davis once said, "Man, sometimes it takes you a long time to sound like yourself." I think the same is true of appearance; sometimes it takes a long time to look like yourself, too. For me, it started with a dramatic haircut at the age of 16. Previously, my dark blonde, wavy hair fell long past my waist. At that time, I was deep into a fierce obsession with the 1970s, and I genuinely believed my long, beachy hair was paying homage to Iggy Pop, or perhaps, on a good day, Stevie Nicks. My wardrobe reflected this fantasy too; I had become especially enthralled by a pair of gold leather Fiorucci trousers. Suffice to say, if the outfit didn't look like an ageing rockstar, I didn't want it.

But by the time I turned 16, my relationship with my hair began to change. I was studying, and my world was expanding. I was submerged in philosophy, English literature and film. I was discovering the things that would shape the intricacies of who I am: books, clothes, ideas and the people I admired. I was becoming the sort of person I am today: someone who would rather elicit a laugh than a compliment on my appearance.

The women I admired seemed to possess a different kind of beauty. I adored the crispness of a perfectly cut suit; seeing women wear Bella Freud tailoring made my heart sing. There was something about what it projected, perhaps the professionalism and seniority it represents. The appeal wasn't separate from their minds, nor was their identity centred on appearance alone. Increasingly, I felt my long hair didn't represent any of that. By that point, I wasn't so much concerned with following conventional ideas of what was "pretty", or, as my dad liked to remind me, "fanciable". He was convinced boys preferred girls with long hair. I only cared about being chic.

The turning point was when my love affair with French culture started to bubble. I was obsessed with French films, music, men—and dare I say, cheese. Then I watched Amélie (2001). The moment I saw Audrey Tautou, that was it; I was sold on the idea of cutting my hair into a bob. If I could get close to Amélie, or at the very least, Margo in The Royal Tenenbaums (2001), I would be happy. Like most decisions I make, I was decisive. I booked an appointment and cut all my hair off. As the lengths fell around me in the hairdresser's chair, everything felt strangely right. I remember vividly how different it felt to lie in bed that night without my hair spilling across the pillow, and how strange it was to run my hands through it in the shower the next morning. But from that day forward, I knew I would never grow it long again—I was me.

Now that I’m older, it's striking to think just how monumental that haircut was. What I realise now is that I wasn't rejecting femininity; I was trying to invent a different version of it to become the woman I wanted to be. The bob felt deliberate. Long hair, in contrast, felt conventional and, to me, carried associations I didn't particularly want, to a version of womanhood that prioritised softness or prettiness. Of course, hair doesn't determine personality, but the bob seemed to suggest the alternative.

Hair historian Rachael Gibson explains, "Through most of history, white women in Western countries have been associated with long hair. It's inextricably linked to long-held ideas of femininity and beauty standards, so anything that challenges it remains connected with ideas of strength, freedom and modernity." Perhaps that's why the haircut felt so significant.

Of course, these meanings aren't universal. Gibson stresses that the symbolism of hair changes dramatically across cultures, religions and histories. In many Black communities, for example, hair carries entirely different political and personal meanings, shaped by histories of colonialism, discrimination and cultural pride. Across South Asia, East Asia and Indigenous cultures, long hair has often symbolised spirituality, ancestry or strength rather than passive femininity. The idea that long hair simply equals traditional womanhood is largely a product of white Western beauty ideals, and I recognise that my relationship with the bob belongs to that particular cultural context, not a universal one. Gibson points out that when women first adopted bobbed hair in the early twentieth century, it represented much more than a trend. "Short hair represented a shift in women's liberation and all the freedoms that came with it," she says.

Of course, I wasn't making a political statement at 17 or thinking about first-wave feminism, but that doesn't mean the cultural baggage wasn't there. The bob haircut has always carried a particular set of associations. Looking back at Louise Brooks in the 1920s, Vidal Sassoon's sharp geometric cuts of the 1960s or the power bobs of the 1990s worn by women like Anna Wintour and Linda Evangelista, again and again, the hairstyle appears on women associated with authority, creativity and independence. As Gibson puts it, "We tend to associate shorter hair with a certain type of woman: someone strong, someone cool, someone independent." And certain women have indeed become almost inseparable from their bob, whether that's Wintour or Alexa Chung.

Sam McKnight MBE, hairstylist and founder of haircare brand Hair by Sam McKnight, explains it perfectly. "The silhouette is a powerful thing. You instantly recognise someone by their silhouette. Think of Anna Wintour, Marilyn Monroe, Cleopatra! A bob has all the complexities that women do; the cut can be strong yet feminine, alluring yet commanding, strong [yet] soft and romantic."

He notes, "Alexa [Chungs]’s bob is always at the top of the Pinterest board because she knows when to make small tweaks and it feels instantly new. Whatever version of a bob she has, the essence of her is always there." Perhaps that's why the bob has endured for more than a century. It isn't one hairstyle, but hundreds. A sharp chin-length bob with blunt ends projects authority and precision. A softer French bob suggests creativity and insouciance, whilst a longer, shaggy version feels artistic, slightly rebellious and less interested in perfection. The silhouette remains recognisable, but its style can be ever-evolving. Like tailoring, it's endlessly adaptable; you can make it clean, romantic, or rock and roll.

At 17, I wanted all of those things at once. I wanted to seem intellectual without being boring, attractive without being accommodating, feminine without being conventional, in the same way as Elastica’s Justine Frischmann. The bob felt like it held all those possibilities. For a while, I genuinely believed that if I looked like those women, I might become them, but what happened instead was something better. The haircut became part of my identity as Eve, a kind of shorthand for the person I wanted to be: curious, opinionated, funny, ambitious and hopefully, just a little bit chic. Looking back, I realise I wasn't trying to look like Audrey Tautou or Justine Frischmann forever; I was borrowing confidence until I found my own, and that's what style so often does. We imitate before we individuate. Eventually, the references fall away, and what remains is you.

Years later, I still have my bob, and I've learnt that there is something deeply valuable about allowing yourself to become who you are. I think it is so important for women to believe in themselves, to take risks and see whether that next step leads them a little closer to who they are. Sometimes it won't, sometimes you'll get it wrong, but occasionally you make a decision that feels less like becoming someone new and more like recognising someone who you were all along.

Last week, a sales assistant in Tom Ford looked at me and said, "I'm from Jamaica, from a family of spiritual women; we know things. You have power. I can tell you're going to do big things. I mean, look at you, girl, with your Anna Wintour bob." I laughed, but I knew exactly what she meant. The bob has always carried cultural meaning. For more than a century, it has been associated with women who refuse to do what is expected of them, women who choose themselves. As McKnight says, a bob provides "a true sense of individuality, a rock-and-roll, devil-may-care rebellious streak. And we all love a rebel."

With summer finally here, I'm meticulously planning my next haircut. And as a beauty editor who studies hair trends for a living, it's easy to get swept up in TikTok hair trends. You see, I'm a low-effort hair person, and so I want a low-maintenance haircut that will see me through the season with minimal styling. Because when it's sunny out, I want to spend less time hairstyling and more time enjoying the weather whilst it lasts. And on a practical level, when it's hot, the last thing you want to do is be styling with your hair dryer for hours.

1. Soft Layered Bob

Bob haircuts aren't going anywhere for summer 2026, and a soft, layered bob is the perfect cut if you want something low-maintenance and versatile. A soft layered bob gives softness and movement, and is short enough that you won't need to tie it up in the heat, and stunning when blow-dried," says DeCarlo. "In the salon, ask for a bob with soft internal layers to create shape, keeping the outline clean for the classic bob look," he says. "At home: blow-dry with a round brush for volume, or leave to air dry for an effortless finish." If you're thinking of going for a bob hairstyle, then summer is the perfect time to go for the chop.

2. Modern Mullet

If you want a different short haircut, then don't overlook the mullet, which is getting a modern twist for 2026. "The mullet is back— longer at the back, shorter on the sides and front," says DeCarlo. "It's edgy, without being too committed to change if someone wants to try something new," he says. It's a great cut to go for if you're growing out a pixie cut, too. "In the salon, ask for a disconnected cut with length kept through the nape and a textured, cropped finish up top," says DeCarlo. "At-home style using a light matte paste for definition, or leave it undone for a relaxed feel," he says.

"For those who want low-effort with styling, the textured shag is the cut of the summer," says DeCarlo. "This cut works beautifully for everyone, especially for those growing out a pixie who are craving something longer, and messier hair is having a real moment right now," he says. "In the salon, ask for soft, shaggy layers with plenty of texture throughout. And to style at home, spritz through some salt spray on damp hair, leave to air dry and you're done."

4. '90s Layers

Wanting to keep your longer lengths? '90s face-framing layers are the haircut to bookmark for your next salon visit. "90s layers offer pure nostalgia," says DeCarlo. Think face-framing layers and angles at the front with a blunt finish at the bottom, which creates seamless movement. It's gorgeous worn sleek or with a voluminous 90s blow-dry," he says. Eagland recommends using a large round brush to create the bounce, but you can also get the look with a hot brush if you want to dry and style at the same time.

If a shag haircut feels like too much, opting for shaggy layers is a way to add more movement and body to your hair. "Shaggy layers were made for summer, and this cut is perfect for those who want minimal effort and a lot of movement on medium and long hair. It's perfect for air-drying on hot days, beach trips, or holidays, too," says DeCarlo. "In the salon, ask for lived-in layers with a choppy, undone finish. Then at home, scrunch in a styling cream or salt spray on damp hair and let it air dry. Or enhance your air-dried hair with curling tongs for a bit more of a polished finish," he says.

6. Wispy Fringe

Thinking of a fringe for summer? DeCarlo tells me that it's a great way to tweak your style without undergoing a drastic change. "There are two fringe options that transform your look without changing your entire haircut," he says. "A curtain fringe is perfect for summer, and you can wear your hair up, and you still have a style with the fringe down. Or, wispy fringes sit shorter at the brow for a chic edge," he says. "In the salon, ask for either a centre-parted curtain fringe, or a feathered fringe cut shorter at the centre, sitting at the brow," says DeCarlo. "At home, a quick blow-dry of the fringe alone and you're polished in minutes."

Celebrity hairstylists and colorists agree that there's an emphasis on all things natural, relaxed, and lived-in right now, and this holds regardless of hair type, color, or length. (I think it's influenced by wellness culture and how people are zeroed in on their health—hair health included, but that's up for debate.) Take it from Isabella Mastrippolito, colorist at Benjamin Salon in West Hollywood. "Across the board, there's a continued push toward lived-in, dimensional color—soft, subtle ribbons of lighter pieces woven through the hair so everything blends easily and grows out without harsh lines. It mimics natural lighting from a long summer outdoors and keeps the overall look soft, easy, and low maintenance.”

There's also an emphasis on "micro-identity," as people reference specific eras and aesthetics from years past, turning them into new, signature looks. "About six in 10 American teens use TikTok daily, and we're pulling from late '90s and Y2K aesthetics, indie sleaze and 2014 Tumblr, '70s texture and shaggy hair, '90s supermodel glam, early clean-girl minimalism, and punk and alternative influences," says Liz Lorenzo Shears, another stylist at Benjamin Salon in West Hollywood. These influences may be nostalgic, but they feel extremely relevant for summer 2026, especially when they exude a relaxed, effortless aura.

Hair Color Trends

Golden-Hour Blonde

Blonde is always particularly popular in the summer, but right now, "golden-hour blonde" is stealing the show. "For blonde, everything is going softer and more beach-washed," Mastrippolito says. "It’s warm beige and light golden tones that look naturally lifted after time in the ocean and sun. It feels effortless and expensive, with a focus on seamless grow-out and color that doesn't look overly maintained."

Meri Kate O'Connor, a Benjamin Salon Celebrity Colorist, agrees, saying balayage is the best technique to use. "For this look, golden ribbons are painted throughout the hair to create warm, sun-kissed dimension. Balayage naturally mimics the way the sun lightens hair (keeping it brighter around the face and on the ends), resulting in a multidimensional highlight that's warm and glowing while still maintaining depth and contrast. The technique also means a softer, more natural grow-out. Think Tate McRae and Gigi Hadid."

Butter Blonde

Butter blonde is just as trendy right now. "This golden blonde is mixed with lighter, brighter, near-white tones that are super shiny and soft," O'Connor says. "Gold reflects light, which gives the hair that luminous, polished finish. It's warm, effortless, and endlessly flattering. Think Margot Robbie and Sydney Sweeney."

Renée Valerie Radoiu, vice president, R+Color Education and R+Color Collective member, agrees. "Butter blonde is the golden refresh blondes crave between seasons. Warmer, brighter, and softly luminous, it can complement cooler skin tones while bringing a healthier glow back to hair that may feel a little faded after summer. Chase Kusero, cofounder of IGK Hair Care, says the emphasis on buttery tones points to a bigger trend. "Bright icy blondes are giving way to warmer, softer blondes that look naturally sunlit. Think creamy champagne, golden undertones, and expensive-looking dimension. Clients are gravitating toward color that grows out beautifully with less maintenance. Teddy Bear Bronde

This season, the trendiest brunette hair color is any shade, as long as it's rich, glossy, and luminous. Yep, we're back to talking about hair health, folks. "Brunettes are leaning rich and glossy," Mastrippolito says. "The overall effect is healthy, reflective hair that catches sunlight in a really natural way, enhancing the depth of the base color rather than changing it dramatically.”

Don't be afraid to go rich and warm, rather than cool. Kusero says to ask for "caramel ribbons and soft dimension." It's not about dramatic contrast; rather, it's about a subtle and reflective finish. "This is the kind of color that catches light really beautifully. Radoiu agrees. "Rich, glossy, absolutely not flat brunette is the mood right now. Think warmth, dimension, and chocolate tones that elevate the hair in a way that feels polished, luxe, and expensive."

The Bixie

Celebs love the bixie. In fact, it might be one of the biggest hair trends of the entire year, much less the summer. Zendaya, Jessie Buckley, and Gracie Abrams are all proponents of the ultra-chic haircut. "This cut is a hybrid between a bob and a pixie," says Leo Izquierdo, cofounder of IGK Hair Care. "It’s shorter and playful but softer than a traditional pixie, with longer pieces around the face and textured layers throughout."

Bonus points if you style it in a relaxed way that highlights your natural texture. It exudes effortlessness and will help preserve the health of your hair (no heat styling necessary). Plus, it gives off a chic South of France vibe.

The Soft Shag

Adam Federico is R+Co's vice president of technical education. He says the soft shag, or the "Sachel," is another low-effort, high-impact option for summer 2026. "The shag continues to evolve, and this summer it’s becoming more wearable. I’m seeing a lot of interest in what people call the 'Sachel,' which sits somewhere between a shag and the Rachel-inspired layered cut. It has face-framing pieces, soft texture, and movement through the lengths, but it’s not overly choppy or hard to grow out."

"I think it’s trending because it gives the hair a bit more personality. It makes natural texture feel intentional, and it has that undone, lived-in energy people love in summer. I would pair this with R+Co Sail Soft Wave Spray ($36) for airy movement without crunch. Curly Face-Framing Lob

Cataanda James is a trichologist and Dippity-Do curly hair expert. She says the curly 'fro and the curly face-framing lob are major hair trends for summer '26—the best one for you all depends on your curl pattern. "[It's] all about naturalism," she says. "Curl patterns 3B to 4C, sans heavy product application and forced definition, effortlessly form into an Afro because that is the personality of higher curl patterns. Curls defy gravity organically, and the true essence of the curly 'fro is its natural, upward flow forming a round, voluminous halo with authentic shape memory."

"On 2A to 3A curl patterns, it's all about strategic cutting, geographical angles, and style technique. Since looser curl patterns experience more of a downward pull and less lift, creating this look entails a global, 90-degree angled cut. Starting at the crown, the hair is held out from the scalp at 90 degrees and blunt cut at each point, ensuring not to lose your guide. You're essentially cutting the hair to form a complete circle, which is clearly visible when flipping the head upside down. This is where styling and technique come into play."

James says both haircuts are trending because they're the most effortless style for curly hair types. Effortless is IN. "This is the personality of curls and rather than being in a constant curl battle, the curlies are embracing it and flaunting their authenticity from head to toe. Ironically, in most cases, depending on the length, the curly 'fro is to the 3B to 4C curlies what the curly, face-framing lob is to the 2A to 3A girlies."

Hair Accessory Trends

Head Scarves

All nine celeb hairstylists and colorists say headscarves are the number one hair accessory trend for summer 2026. Yep, every single one. "Scarves are the editorial hair accessory of the moment," Lorenzo Shears says. "Designers are pushing them hard on runways right now. Silk scarves tied over hair, woven into braids, wrapped around buns, or worn Jackie O.– and Grace Kelly–style, tied under the chin. It's effortlessly chic."

Edgar Parra, senior stylist at Benjamin Salon in New York and West Hollywood, says silk scarves are particularly trendy. "Silk scarves are having a moment, but they’re being worn in a much more relaxed way, loosely tied into ponytails or wrapped into undone buns so they feel soft and unforced rather than styled," he says.

Silk scarves aren't just chic; they're practical. That's according to James, who says, "The biggest curly hair accessory of summer 2026 is the standard, square-size silk or satin scarf. It's protective to your curls, has no friction, and doubles as a headband, headwrap, hair tie, ponytail holder, scrunchie, and all the things! It's versatile, comes in a variety of colors and prints, and is easy to tote. Scarves are the ultimate accessory to your curls, and when styled properly, they can help you camouflage curls that have started to frizz or fray, or curls that have surpassed washday far too long. Designer labels or not, the scarf is the main character to adorn your curls all summer 2026!"

Claw Clips

What's more relaxed and effortless than a claw clip? This summer, they're bigger than ever. "Claw clips continue to be a go-to, but they’re leaning more understated—matte finishes, neutral tones, and simple shapes that work for quick styling," Mastrippolito says.

Izquierdo agrees, noting that the size of your claw clip matters now more than ever. "The effortless updo continues to dominate," he says. "Oversize clips create that 'undone but chic' look that people want during hot weather."

Soft Headbands

Last but not least, the experts say soft, beachy headbands will be a top trend this season. Frederico says they're practical but romantic. "I think consumers are drawn to them because they give you that vacation feeling, even if you’re just running errands."

Parra agrees. "Headbands are also having a moment, and for summer 2026 expect to see a beachier, more relaxed variation of the trend. Beyond the style factor, they're practical—a great way to keep hair off your face and cool down during the warmer months." Easy and relaxed—as is the official theme of summer 2026.

The best thing about summer hair trends is that they aren't really all that rigid—literally and figuratively. We tend to see lots of airy, textured silhouettes on the rise, yet the trends themselves also aren't too stringent. As celebrity hairstylist Sky Kim shares, "Summer always brings hair back to freedom. It’s less structured, more expressive." As we shed our winter layers for linen sets and breezy slips, hair becomes looser, more lived-in—especially in 2026, when embracing piece-y movement is very much en vogue.

"2025 was sleek, minimal, and controlled. 2026 is expressive, textural, and a little rebellious in a wearable way," adds Kim. As such, we're seeing polished cuts and styles give way to bolder (yet still natural) iterations, all of which you can find when you scroll ahead.

Just a quick note before diving in: While I've labelled some haircuts and colours below as "out," by no means am I saying they should stay buried. Beauty trends have a funny way of cycling in and out of the spotlight, so you might very well see them again once fall rolls back around. For summer 2026, though, these are the seven swaps on the rise.

Out: Blunt Bobs | In: Lived-In Layers

If you sported a chin-skimming crop last summer, you're not alone. It was arguably the year of the bob—from voluminous "Riviera" bobs to sleek Prada" bobs to '60s-inspired "flipped" bobs—and if you, too, committed to the shorter cut, you're probably currently residing in lob territory. As you encompass the grow-out period, try leaning into soft movement and texture (such as airy layers) as opposed to blunt bobs.

Celebrity hairstylist Reece Walker agrees: "Many clients who had strong blunt bobs are now growing them out and really embracing hair that feels less structured and more lived-in," he shares. Consider it the pendulum swing from bold, sophisticated cuts to styles with more of an "undone" feel.

Out: Solid Cool Tones | In: Warmth and Dimension

"Flat, one-note hair colour is fading, especially overly cool, ashy tones that don’t reflect light," says Kim. "Instead, people are leaning into dimension and natural undertones. Think warm blondes, reds that enhance what’s already in your hair, and brunettes with subtle tonal ribbons. It’s very reflective, very alive—colour that shifts in the light rather than sitting flat." Walker echoes her declaration, adding that dimension in colour is going to be huge. "Less flat, solid colour and more depth and movement," he notes.

Dakota Johnson is the perfect example, as she recently transformed her rich brunette length to a dimensional dirty blonde at this year's Time 100 gala. It's the first time in years she switched up her go-to shade, so that's when you know the colour trend has legs. Time this as your sign to book in for some balayage.

Out: Blended Curtain Bangs | In: "Bratty" Bangs

Long curtain bangs are A+ for those who aren't necessarily ready to commit to the bang life, but in summer 2026, there's little room for middle ground. "Soft, overly blended curtain bangs are out," Kim asserts. Instead? A bold, "bratty" side bang reigns supreme. "It’s shorter, slightly choppier and more intentional. It sits higher, hits around the cheekbone or brow, and feels a little undone in a way that gives attitude rather than softness," she adds. "It’s less about perfectly feathered face framing and more about creating shape and edge."

Out: Subtle Tones | In: Expressive Colour

While haircuts are becoming increasingly more lived-in, "Colour is where it gets exciting," notes Kim. "We’re seeing a move toward dimensional, expressive colour, similar to that Alyssa Liu energy where it feels bold and wild." You don't necessarily have to commit to a halo hair colour like Liu, but for those craving more of a summer statement, consider this your sign to embrace high-contrast (dare I say ombré?) hair. "I think the drastic dual tones are coming back, like Billie Eilish’s green hair roots, dark tips, etc.," adds Kim.

Out: Glassy Slick-Backs | In: Textured Updos

Allow me to clarify: a slick-back will never truly fall out of favour. But stylists can't ignore the onslaught of lived-in, piece-y updos that just feel unrestricted. Shares Kim, "2025 felt very controlled, sleek, polished, and almost uniform—a lot of glass hair, tight finishes, and minimal variation. 2026 is breaking that open. There’s more personality, more texture, and more confidence in letting hair feel lived-in." Again, slick-backs will never be fully "out," but they are becoming less helmet-like. "Even when the look is polished, it’s not rigid. It’s less about perfection and more about identity," Kim adds.

The best thing about summer hair trends is that they aren't really all that rigid—literally and figuratively. We tend to see lots of airy, textured silhouettes on the rise, yet the trends themselves also aren't too stringent. As celebrity hairstylist Sky Kim shares, "Summer always brings hair back to freedom. It’s less structured, more expressive." As we shed our winter layers for linen sets and breezy slips, hair becomes looser, more lived-in—especially in 2026, when embracing piece-y movement is very much en vogue.

"Twenty twenty-five was sleek, minimal, and controlled. Twenty twenty-six is expressive, textural, and a little rebellious in a wearable way," adds Kim. As such, we're seeing polished cuts and styles give way to bolder (yet still natural) iterations, all of which you can find when you scroll ahead.

Just a quick note before diving in: While I've labeled some haircuts and colors below as "out," by no means am I saying they should stay buried. Beauty trends have a funny way of cycling in and out of the spotlight, so you might very well see them again once fall rolls back around. For summer 2026, though, these are the seven swaps on the rise.

Out: Blunt Bobs | In: Lived-In Layers

If you sported a chin-skimming crop last summer, you're not alone. It was arguably the year of the bob—from voluminous "Riviera" bobs to sleek "Prada" bobs to '60s-inspired "flipped" bobs—and if you, too, committed to the shorter cut, you're probably currently residing in lob territory. As you encompass the grow-out period, try leaning into soft movement and texture (such as airy layers) as opposed to blunt edges.

Celebrity hairstylist Reece Walker agrees: "Many clients who had strong blunt bobs are now growing them out and really embracing hair that feels less structured and more lived-in," he shares. Consider it the pendulum swing from bold, sophisticated cuts to styles with more of an "undone" feel.

Out: Solid Cool Tones | In: Warmth and Dimension

"Flat, one-note color is fading, especially overly cool, ashy tones that don’t reflect light," says Kim. "Instead, people are leaning into dimension and natural undertones. Think warm blondes, reds that enhance what’s already in your hair, and brunettes with subtle tonal ribbons. It’s very reflective, very alive—color that shifts in the light rather than sitting flat." Walker echoes her declaration, adding that dimension in color is going to be huge. "Less flat, solid color and more depth and movement," he notes.

Dakota Johnson is the perfect example, as she recently transformed her rich brunette length to a dimensional dirty blonde at this year's Time 100 gala. It's the first time in years she switched up her go-to shade, so that's when you know the color trend has legs.

Out: Blended Curtain Bangs | In: "Bitchy" Bangs

Long curtain bangs are A+ for those who aren't necessarily ready to commit to the bang life, but in summer 2026, there's little room for middle ground. "Soft, overly blended curtain bangs are out," Kim asserts. Instead? A bold, "bitchy" bang reigns supreme. "It’s shorter, slightly choppier, and more intentional. It sits higher, hits around the cheekbone or brow, and feels a little undone in a way that gives attitude rather than softness," she adds. "It’s less about perfectly feathered face framing and more about creating shape and edge."

Out: Subtle Tones | In: Expressive Color

While haircuts are becoming increasingly more lived-in, "Color is where it gets exciting," notes Kim. "We’re seeing a move toward dimensional, expressive color, similar to that Alyssa Liu energy where it feels bold and wild." You don't necessarily have to commit to a halo hair color like Liu, but for those craving more of a summer statement, consider this your sign to embrace high-contrast (dare I say ombré?) hair. "I think the drastic dual tones are coming back, like Billie Eilish’s green hair roots, dark tips, etc.," adds Kim.

Out: Glassy Slick-Backs | In: Textured Updos

Allow me to clarify: a slick-back will never truly fall out of favor. But stylists can't ignore the onslaught of lived-in, piece-y updos that just feel unrestricted. Shares Kim, "Twenty twenty-five felt very controlled, sleek, polished, and almost uniform—a lot of glass hair, tight finishes, and minimal variation. 2026 is breaking that open. There’s more personality, more texture, and more confidence in letting hair feel lived-in." Again, slick-backs will never be fully "out," but they are becoming less helmet-like. "Even when the look is polished, it’s not rigid. It’s less about perfection and more about identity," Kim adds.

“The longer your hair, the higher the maintenance” is something we’ve all probably heard when considering whether or not we should opt for a bob. But I have to admit that as someone with Afro hair, I’ve always been under the impression that getting a bob would be more stress it’s worth.

The truth? Even the shortest of haircuts still requires a lot of upkeep, something that I’m sure low-maintenance girls like myself are heartbroken to hear. However, there are plenty of bob hairstyles around that are perfectly suited to naturally curly and coily hair and don’t require the hours of upkeep you might initially expect.

A few days ago, I sat down with professional hair stylist and brand founder, Charlotte Mensah, to get her honest thoughts on what bob haircuts are the best for Afro hair, as well as how to maintain your own bob at home. Here’s what she had to say...

What Is an Afro Bob Haircut?

Mensah says, "An Afro bob is a bob shaped specifically with textured hair in mind. It honours the density, movement and beauty of curls, coils or stretched natural hair, rather than forcing the hair into a shape designed for straighter textures. It can be sculpted soft and rounded, sharp and graphic, chin-length, shoulder-grazing or layered for lift and movement. The beauty of an Afro bob is that it celebrates shape."

Do Bobs Suit Afro Hair?

"Absolutely! Bobs can be beautiful on Afro hair. In many ways, textured hair gives a bob more character, volume and presence. The key lies in tailoring the cut to your curl pattern, density, shrinkage and how you like to wear your hair day to day. A good bob should work with your texture, not against it", says Mensah.

Tips for Getting a Bob with Afro Hair

• Book a consultation first and foremost so that you can speak to your stylist before doing anything. Understand the look you want to achieve, and talk through how your stylist will approach it. A lot can be uncovered in that conversation.
• Bring reference images to help communicate shape, fullness, length and finish, while giving your stylist something tangible to respond to. Come open-minded too, as the right bob should suit both your texture and your features.
• Wear your hair as you usually wear it so your stylist understands its natural behaviour. Talk about shrinkage, as a curly bob and a stretched bob can sit very differently. Be honest about maintenance, too. If you want ease, say so. If you enjoy styling, that opens up other possibilities.
• Face shape, neckline and the experience of the stylist all matter. A well-cut bob should frame you beautifully, and textured hair deserves someone who understands how to cut for shape.

The Best Bobs for Afro Hair

1. Blunt Bob

If you often blow-dry your hair, try opting for a one-length, also known as a blunt bob. It requires much lower upkeep than a traditional cut and less frequent trims, not to mention it looks sleek and intentional.

2. Layered Bob

If your hair has natural, different-length coils to it, embrace it in the form of a layered bob. This voluminous hairstyle will give your bob effortless structure and requires minimal styling to look chic.

3. Tapered Bob

A tapered bob is longer on top and gradually gets shorter toward the nape of the neck, creating a clean, structured finish that looks put together. It perfectly balances feeling laid-back and looking elegant, and the bob will evolve nicely without any interference needed as it grows out.

4. Fringed Bob

How Do I Maintain a Bob with Afro Hair?

Mensah states that, “a bob thrives when the shape is preserved. I always say focus on moisture, shape and gentle upkeep."

She recommends the following:

1. A bob always looks its best when the hair is healthy.
2. Regular trims help maintain the line, usually every eight to twelve weeks.
3. Keep the hair hydrated, as dryness can make the shape harder to hold. Lightweight oils can help support softness and shine, while a nourishing styling pomade can be useful for defining shape and polishing the finish.
4. Protect the hair at night with silk or satin, and avoid overloading it with product so the hair keeps its movement. For silk pressed or stretched bobs, wrapping or pin-curling at night helps preserve the style beautifully.

Best Products for Afro Bobs

I’m a creature of habit when it comes to my hair, but there’s something about summer’s impending arrival that has me itching to try something new. And I’m putting it down to the fact that the summer hair trends for 2026 will undoubtedly appeal to the low-maintenance amongst us. Yes, I’ve been busy talking to industry’s top hairstylists and colourists, and there’s one thing that they all agree on for the season ahead: summer hair is going to be a whole lot more relaxed.

"Summer hair is moving away from anything overworked or overly done," says celebrity hair stylist Sam McKnight MBE. "It’s that idea of luxury through restraint; soft, touchable texture, natural movement, nothing too styled. And there’s a definite return to '90s minimalism too, which we’re seeing again through our renewed obsession with Carolyn Bessette Kennedy."

This season, it’s less about chasing a perfectly styled finish and more about opting for cuts that work with your natural hair and grow out beautifully. As for hair colour? It’s similarly relaxed. "Low-maintenance, but high impact," explains Mary Wheatley, colourist at Hershesons Fitzrovia. "Think mixes of warms and beige, blondes with natural depth, and soft, natural tones with sun-kissed vibes."

So if you’re ready to embrace a new look that feels polished without trying too hard (which is exactly how I want my hair to feel all summer), then keep scrolling for the summer hair trends that experts predict will be everywhere this season.

1. Shaggy Bob

Naturally, this wouldn’t be a 2026 hair trends report unless a bob was in the mix. For summer, though, it’s the shaggy bob that will dominate; a natural shift away from the precisely cut styles that we’ve been seeing towards something more relaxed.

"I am so excited about the return of the shaggy bob," says Samantha Cusick, celebrity hair stylist and ghd ambassador. "Unlike the sharp, geometric bob that we’ve had for a few seasons, this one is softer. It’s got layers, it’s got curtain fringe energy, and it moves."

What appeals most about this style is how little effort it actually requires. It’s the kind of cut that gives your hair shape and personality without the need for constant styling. "It works on so many different textures and lengths, which makes it so wearable, and it’s one of those cuts that actually gets better as it grows out," explains Cusick.

2. Floating Fringe

Call it the Margot Robbie effect, but fringes have been enjoying a renaissance of late. However, there is no denying that bangs can be high-maintenance, which is where summer’s floating fringe comes in.

"Effortless, light, wearable… this summer, it’s going to be all about a soft fringe that floats just above the brows and opens subtly through the centre," says Antonio Hector, stylist at Hershesons Belgravia. "It's not short enough to be a micro-fringe, but it should feel light and broken enough to lift and frame the face."

If you’re on the fence about going for the chop, then the beauty of this fringe is that it doesn’t take over your whole look. Instead, its wispiness gently frames the face and grows out subtly so you avoid the need for weekly trims.

3. Layered Lob

Mid-length hairstyles are having a moment right now and make for the perfect in-between option if you’re not sure about whether to chop or grow your hair.

"Softer, more relaxed shapes are really going to dominate for summer, particularly longer, grown-out bobs and layered mid-length cuts," says Neale Rodger, style director at Stil London. "These styles offer versatility and movement whilst still feeling lightweight for summer, combined with a rise in subtle face-framing layers and airy fringes, which give structure without feeling too heavy."

The beauty of the lob is how adaptable it is. As Rodger points out, this is a cut that "works with the hair’s natural behaviour rather than against it," so you can air-dry it, heat-style it, tie it up, wear it loose; it works effortlessly with whatever kind of summer you’re enjoying.

4. The Bixie

Probably the edgiest style in the summer lineup, the "bixie" is already taking over as one of the most-asked-for cuts ever since Zendaya stepped out with one this spring. However, it’s surprisingly wearable in real life too.

"The standout cut for me is a modern, textured bixie—something that sits between a classic bob and a pixie," explains Tobias Bell, hairstylist and UK Amika stylist partner. "There’s a strong rock 'n' roll influence coming through a lot of this season’s cuts, which is all about movement and shape, rather than perfection. This cut has that slightly undone edge that feels very current."

The bixie will definitely make a statement, but not in an intimidating way. So if you’re after a cool chop for summer, it makes a great option.

5. CBK Blonde

Minimalists rejoice. Buttery blonde is back, inspired directly by Love Story and Carolyn Bassette Kennedy’s iconic '90s honeyed hair.

"In salon, we’re really taking our cues from the renewed buzz around Carolyn Bessette Kennedy, which has definitely been sparked by Love Story," explains Marley Xavier, colourist at Hershesons Belgravia. "This is the kind of blonde that transcends trends—it’s cool, clean and effortlessly striking."

What makes this shade stand out is just how polished it is. This is less about trying to create a lived-in look or add lots of dimension; it’s about creating a really refined, even, golden tone with root-to-tip highlights. It works best when paired with pared-back styling, like a clean centre parting and a simple blowdry.

6. Golden-Hour Brunette

Whilst blonde always dominates as the most-requested colour change in salons for summer, this season, brunettes are about to enjoy a major upgrade in the form of "golden hour brunette".

"You’re going to start hearing this term everywhere," says Cusick. "It’s a rich, dimensional, glossy colour that almost glows under every light. Think deep bases with warm caramel and honey ribbons running through—a colour that has real depth but also catches the light in the most beautiful way."

This is the kind of colour that looks expensive without being obvious. And, as Cusick points out, the key is to find a colourist who will completely personalise the colour to each client so that it looks effortless.

7. Statement Shades

Whilst natural tones are having a moment, there’s still space for something a little more expressive this summer, too.

"Colour is definitely splitting in two directions. On one side, we’re seeing rich, glossy tones with depth, and on the other, there’s a return to statement colours like coppers, pinks and grungier tones," explains Bell. The key to making a bright or more experimental hue feel wearable lies in how it's worn. Bell advises teaming it with a textured cut so your colour feels lived-in.

After the vows are declared, the cake is sliced, and all the painstaking planning has (finally!) paid off, the recent bride deserves some good ol' fashioned self-care—a factory reset, if you will. Some couples choose to head straight into the honeymoon, others decide to get a jump start on thank-you notes or flip through early photos, but most find some way to take a beat and revel in the post-wedding bliss. Gabi, an e-commerce coordinator getting married on April 26, is heading straight to the salon chair.

"I have already scheduled an appointment to cut my hair into a bob on April 29, three days after the wedding," she tells me. Talk about hitting the reset button, but Gabi's certainly not alone. While not every bride proactively plans their post-wedding chop, a significant number (including yours truly!) do decide to get a dramatic haircut soon after saying "I do"—some even immediately following the ceremony for a bold reception moment—be it a bob, lob, pixie, or something in between (ever heard of a bixie?).

The question is… why?

Why Is It Common to Cut Your Hair After Your Wedding?

We'll start with the more practical reason: A bunch of brides (self included) intentionally grow out their hair for the wedding day. "There’s an expectation that bridal hair feels soft, effortless, and romantic, and longer lengths help achieve that," explains hairstylist Paul Perez, co-owner of Flore Los Angeles. That's not to say shorter crops don't exude romance. A sculpted bob or pixie is just as timeless, and ultimately, the best bridal hairstyle is the one that makes you feel most beautiful on your special day.

However, for brides-to-be who aren't totally sure which style to pick, longer locks do generally provide more flexibility to play with different trends—twists, updos, et al. "In fact, almost 99% of the time, you add even more hair in the form of extensions," notes celebrity hairstylist Temur Hamilton (who cut my own lob about a month ago!).

Of course, keeping longer strands healthy is often a time-consuming process, so once the "I dos" are done, it makes sense that those brides would have had enough of that maintenance. My own lengths were particularly dry and brittle post-wedding (highlights, extensions, and a last-minute chemical treatment will do that to you), so chopping off the damage felt like the right move.

But according to neuropsychologist Sanam Hafeez, PsyD, there's more to the bride-to-bob pipeline than meets the eye. "In my practice, clients mention it almost in passing, the way you bring something up when you don't realize it's significant. 'I just felt like cutting it after the wedding,'" she says. "When we slow down and look at it, there's almost always something underneath. A quiet exhale. A reclaiming of self after months of being, in some ways, a walking event."

See, unless you're a celebrity who frequents the press-tour circuit, there are likely very few times in your life when you spend hours in the glam chair for a highly photographed occasion. Hell, even celebrities we do consider red carpet regulars have followed the bride-to-bob pipeline. Consider model Taylor Hill, who married private equity investor Daniel Fryer in June 2023. By that September, she was sporting a textured pixie. And while we aren't 100% sure whether Zendaya and Tom Holland *actually* tied the knot, I can't ignore the fact that she debuted a noticeably shorter bixie during Paris Fashion Week, just days after stylist Law Roach declared them married at the 2026 Actor Awards. Coincidence? Perhaps, but I'm adding the chop to my list of reasons it's plausible. (She also showed up to the Louis Vuitton fall/winter 2026 show wearing a gold wedding band on her left ring finger. I digress!)

For brides, the stakes are high, the pressure is on, and even with an abundance of love in the room, the production itself can understandably trigger some overwhelm. "One of my very best friends chopped her [hair] off six weeks after her wedding," Hafeez adds. "When I asked her why, she just laughed and replied, 'I felt like myself again.' She lacked the words to explain why, but I understood what she meant."

Hair is also intimately tied to identity, and when yours evolves, it's common to crave a cut to mark that internal shift. It's similar logic to the "breakup bangs" stereotype, which involves a drastic hair change to shed the past and emerge anew, but a dramatic cut doesn't necessarily have to signal trauma. As Hafeez explains, "it just requires transition." While breakup bangs symbolize detachment—literally shearing off a piece of your past—"bridal bobbing is more subtle, less 'escaping,' more 'arriving,'" she adds. "But the principle's the same: I am newly me, and I need my outer self to match my new inner self."

That identity shift happens rather subliminally (it's not like you wake up the day after your wedding and feel like a brand-new person), and it's not necessarily a bad thing—quite the opposite, in fact! "Happiness and transformation are not mutually exclusive," Hafeez adds. "Sometimes you can experience the happiest of life changes and still find yourself on a threshold, itching to commemorate that crossing. The salon chair, it turns out, is a remarkably common place to do that."

How to Choose a Post-Wedding Chop

Okay, so you're craving a dramatic cut. It's clear you're not alone, but stylists do have some tips to ensure you wind up with the most flattering crop. "The bob haircut is my favorite. It’s sexy, chic, mature, and it offers a lot of versatility," shares Hamilton. He recommends opting for a French bob or '90s bob with a swishy, voluminous silhouette. "I love a clean blunt bob for something chic and strong," Perez adds, "or a softer, layered cut with movement for a more effortless feel."

Some bobs—like the aforementioned French variety—were practically made to pair with bangs, so feel free to add some fringe too if you'd like. According to Perez, bangs or face-framing pieces "can also help personalize the look." (Just be prepared to put in a little more maintenance—bang styling is not for the faint of heart!) I'd recommend starting there, and if you wind up craving something even shorter down the line, keep cutting for a micro-bob or bixie moment or go full throttle with a pixie.

If you're a bit hesitant to commit to the bob life, a lob or clavicut (aka, a haircut that skims your clavicle) is a fabulous starting point. "I like to call it 'the tease' because it flirts with length, giving you the drama of long hair with the edge and ease of a shorter cut," celebrity hairstylist Davontaé Washington previously told WWW about collarbone-length crops. I personally opted for a lob post-wedding and can confirm it delivers the "fresh start" energy I was craving yet has a very forgiving grow-out phase—a happy-medium haircut of the highest order. Of course, inspiration photos are nonnegotiable. (I showed up to Hamilton's salon with a full Pinterest board.) Just make sure your reference images are similar to your own hair texture.

Zoë, a first-grade teacher, also joined team lob about a month after her honeymoon, yearning for a drastic change from the waist-length locks she grew out for her 2024 wedding. It was a welcome fresh start, but rather than subscribing to a "shed it and forget it" philosophy, she decided to give her wedding style a new life. "When I realized how much hair I would be cutting, I came up with the idea of donating it and knew that was the move I wanted to make," she tells me. No matter which post-wedding haircut you choose, if you have at least 12 inches of shorn hair (the standard donation, though some organizations, like Locks of Love, do accept 10), donating it can not only mark a new chapter in your life but also drastically change someone else's.

"I've known a few people in my life who have dealt with hair loss for a multitude of reasons, and I've heard some of them talk about how challenging that is/was and feeling like they lost a part of their identity… to be able to help someone feel more like themselves through my small contribution makes me so grateful," Zoë adds. "I don't ultimately know who ended up with my wedding hair, but I hope they feel even more beautiful and loved than I did on my wedding day."

And Hailey Bieber’s new Coachella haircut makes a compelling case for long layers as a defining summer hair trend.

We're used to seeing Hailey with short bob haircuts or mid-length hairstyles, but it seems she's embraced the longer lengths this year with long, waterfall layers that tumble from the shoulder down to her ends. And I'm obsessed.

These face-framing layers are a great way to add movement or update longer hairstyles without going for a big chop. They're still long enough to be tied back into a ponytail or bun, and they look just as good straightened as they do styled à la Rachel Green, just how Hailey wore hers this past weekend. All you need is a hot brush or thermal brush to twirl the ends inwards, or use a round brush and your hair dryer to create the flicky ends and '90s-inspired movement.

This time of the year is my favourite time to spot hair trends. Over the past couple of months, we've had the awards season, fashion month and a flurry of premieres and red carpet moments, all of which are the perfect fodder for us beauty editors to spot the next big beauty trends. And after keeping a firm eye on the haircut trends this year, one thing is for certain. Everyone seems to be going for a short haircut right now. And I'm tipping the elfin bob to be circulating amongst salons as a major spring hair trend this year.

What Is the Elfin Bob?

I first spotted it on Gracie Abrams' BAFTA hair look. It's not quite a pixie cut, and not quite a bob haircut. The elfin bob marries the two together, featuring the impish silhouette of a pixie cut with the longer length of a cropped bob haircut that still allows you to wear it tucked behind the ears. It's easily one of the chicest short haircuts I've seen this year, with celebrities such as Zendaya and Iris Law wearing this elegant yet cool-girl cut. Tinkerbell, eat your heart out.

Call me open-minded or easily influenced, but sometimes, all it takes is seeing someone with a certain haircut for me to consider getting it myself. Whether it's a stranger I pass on the street or a celeb posing on a red carpet, there have been times when I seriously considered a switch-up. So far in 2026, I've obsessed over French-girl curtain bangs and the return of 2006-era side bangs.

Most recently, though, I've been turning my focus (is it an all-out fixation?) to a short, celeb-approved cut called the bixie. Per its name, it's halfway between a traditional pixie and a standard bob. It's chic! It's versatile! And it's set to take over in 2026. Ahead, learn all about this trendy haircut. According to celebrity hairstylist Jerome Lordet, owner of Jerome Lordet Salon in NYC, "the bixie is lighter and more textured than a bob but longer and softer than a pixie. It's effortless, and I love how it can be tailored to suit each person's face shape, hair type, and lifestyle."

Its versatility is what really sets the bixie apart from other short hairstyles. You can wear it slicked back for a sleek look, pumped up with lots of soft volume, curled, straightened… The list goes on. Maybe that's why it appears to transcend aesthetics and generations.

Abrams's bixie is soft, feathered, and romantic. If you want to achieve the exact same look, Lordet recommends asking for soft layers around the face with natural texture. "It should feel light and undone and easy to style and maintain," he says. "I always approach it with a 'wash and wear' philosophy so it looks great without much effort."

"I'd suggest asking for longer layers with clean lines and a smooth shape but still keep movement. It is elegant, wearable, and effortlessly chic." I have to agree.

Since the bixie is so versatile, there's really no end-all way to style it. However, Lordet has some direction. "The key is to enhance the hair's natural movement," he says. "I recommend a lightweight texturizing cream or product to define the shape without weighing it down. Air-drying works beautifully, but a quick blow-dry is also great to bring out the style. The beauty of the bixie is that it is chic and easy to maintain."

A warm, earthy copper is certainly on-trend, but master colorist Rachael Thomas, director of education at Madison Reed, suggests amping up the golden tones even further this spring. Enter sunlit copper, a "warm, glowing red that flatters every complexion," she says, while creating natural-looking dimension. "Sunlit copper emerges as a wearable, everyday expression of red," Thomas adds. "It feels fresh but not extreme or artificial, which is exactly what people are looking for right now."

Golden-Hour Brunette

Similarly, we have golden hour brunette, a torched take on chocolate. Thomas calls it a "classic brunette with a sophisticated modern twist," thanks to those radiant gold tones. Ranging from light caramel (like Giannetos's snap of Tate McRae here) to deep espresso, its key factor is that rich, golden warmth. "A lot of people are looking for a rich luminous brunette that isn’t matte or overly cool. Golden hour brunette delivers that elevated, sun-kissed warmth that compliments your natural base in a luxurious way," Thomas adds. It also results in a more "lived-in" look with a forgiving grow-out phase, which will ultimately require less trips to the salon. Win, win!

Butter Blonde

Call it the Love Story effect, but a rich, buttery, Carolyn Bessette–coded blonde (seen on Sarah Pidgeon here, of course) will be all over mood boards this spring. This spring, the pros predict a slew of bobs (get ready to call your stylist!), but not all crops are created equal. For those craving a bolder statement, allow me to introduce you to the square bob, which is a blunt cut with even weight on either side of the ears and across the back of the neck, making it look, well, square. According to Hayes the key to the lazy bob haircut is a combination of the length and the finish. “It sits somewhere between the chin and shoulders and never feels too structured or overly polished,” he explains. In fact, its secret lies in the fact that this bob actually isn’t a one-length cut despite looking very much like one. “It actually has cleverly concealed layering which slims the silhouette and gives a relaxed and undone texture,” explains Tom Smith, hair stylist, trend forecaster, and founder of Aevum Salon. Despite its laidback look then, the lazy bob can actually be personalised precisely to your hair texture and thickness, unlike a more classic cut.

“It’s ideal for medium hair density that has a wave or loose curl naturally, but on thicker hair, concealed layers can provide a real opportunity to contour and shape the silhouette, whilst on fine hair, the bluntness of the ends can help add the appearance of thickness,” explains Smith.

What to Ask For

If you’re looking for inspo to take with you into the salon, then Hailey Bieber is the undeniable queen of this look at the moment, but there are specific things you can ask for to ensure you leave with the perfect lazy bob “I’d recommend asking for a soft, shoulder-skimming bob with minimal layering and natural texture,” advises Hayes. “You want the weight to sit through the ends so that the hair looks healthy and full, but with enough softness so it moves naturally and doesn’t feel too blunt or geometric.”

Even better, once it’s cut in, Hayes suggests that you won’t have to go back for a trim for between eight and 10 weeks. “One of the reasons this cut is so popular is because it’s quite low-maintenance, and as the shape is intentionally relaxed, it grows out beautifully,” he explains.

They were popularized by the '60s French movie star Brigitte Bardot, and these swooping, full fringes have since been spotted on the likes of Nicole Kidman, Demi Moore, and Sabrina Carpenter, to name a few. "These bangs leaned into an effortless, early '70s French vibe," he explains. According to Abergel, the modern-day take on this style is wispier, evoking a look that is "delicate but intentional." "I love the soft texture, lived-in movement, and iconic French-girl nonchalance of this look," he adds.

One of the most-requested styles nowadays—if not the curtain bang—is wispy fringe, or what Abergel affectionately calls "Birkin bangs" after Jane Birkin's iconic shear. Seabrooke describes this feathered style as "peekaboo, barely there strands," and shouts out this cut as a great way to test out bangs before committing to the bit. Take Lisa Manoban's silky style, which flutters across her forehead lightly and works whether straight, wavy, or curly.

"They have that signature softness and [an] undone quality that never goes out of style," muses Abergel. "The middle is subtly shorter, giving that openness to the eyes, while the sides flow into the cut for a more undone, natural feel," he describes. Much like curtain bangs, this style is wonderful for someone seeking versatility. Take Camila Cabello's fringe, for instance, as she often oscillates between her natural texture and blow-dried strands with ease—which Abergel says is the whole point.

"As the weather warms, fringe should feel flexible—something you can wear forward with attitude or effortlessly push aside as the season heats up." If you're looking for a benchmark between full fringe and curtain bangs, this is your style.

Curly Bangs

Bangs are a commitment, no doubt—which is why your selected style should work with your hair type. Luckily, bangs aren't sequestered to one specific kind, and curly hair types are a smash with feathery fringe. Take Zendaya's cascading spiral shear, dusting her brows and adding dimension to her long style.

Carpenter's signature curtain bangs are often worn in her natural curly style, which gives her fringe a whole new life, and breakout star Odessa A'zion mesmerized us with her bendy fringe at the 2026 Critics' Choice Awards. Seabrooke describes this type of bangs as a standout because it "plays into natural curl patterns and waves," offering more versatility and less hair damage due to infrequent use of heat. The trick here is to utilize curl cream for that extra boost of hydration, to tame frizz, and offer style-preserving hold.

Blunt Bangs

If you're ready to approach bangs head-on, you'll want to ask your stylist for a blunt cut. Not only is this style classic and sharp, but it's getting an ever-so-slight facelift in 2026. "Gen Z alternative girls are loving a choppy little blunt bang," says Hawkins. Take, for example, Megan Thee Stallion's ultra-sharp, sleek fringe clipped just below the brows and styled pin-straight.

For something a bit more lived-in, reference Lily Allen's signature thick bangs. "These are romantically cut to fall effortlessly straight across the eyebrows," explains Seabrooke. Allen's style includes the full, blunt style that Megan donned, just with a choppier trim. That said, because this fringe style is so full, it's easy to mold them into different shapes should you choose. Mess them up with a bit of texturizing spray to get a shaggier look, or kiss them with a touch of styling oil for a sleek look. It's easy to achieve different variants with the right tools and products.

Micro Bangs

Behold, baby bangs: one of 2026's hottest hair trends yet. Kravitz is one of the latest celebs to grab my attention with her curly, forehead-dusting fringe, which looks extra chic in the side-swept style she wore at the 2025 Academy Museum Gala. Seabrooke calls this "bold, ultra-short fringe" a definite fashion statement, being slightly unconventional and considered a bit more high fashion than longer styles.

"Going into spring, I’m drawn to bangs that feel light and intentional. Like the one we just created on Kristen Stewart," says Abergel of trendy micro bangs. Stewart's iteration—a choppier, piece-y shear—speaks to the star's rugged, yet refined style and takes a wispier approach than Kravitz's. For something that feels fresh, modern, and sure to impress the style set, micro bangs are the ones to try.

Side Bangs

What Hawkins calls "the biggest surprise" is the imminent return of side bangs. "The millennial side bang swoop resurgence is on the horizon," he indulges, spotlighting a recent iteration he crafted on Kiernen Shipka. "It kind of tore," he laughs. Marked by the early aughts (and often paired with choppy layers and stripey highlights—a sign of the times), this style is returning with an elevated, fashionable vengeance. Even Rihanna wore it, which means we need to be writing this down.

Seabrooke labels this style as another one to try if you're looking for room to play instead of a set style. "Side-swept bangs are really versatile because they can be styled with a middle part or a side part, which is really flexible if you like to wear your hair different ways," she explains. That said, Hawkins warns that you'll need a healthy amount of hair spray to make this look last. "I used tons of Sexy Hair Spray and Play to lock it into place just like I did back when I was a teenager doing hair in the MySpace days," he recalls from Shipka's styling session.

How to Choose the Right Bangs for Your Face Shape

Let me start by saying that there is no right or wrong style of bangs for your face shape—there’s just personal preference. “Just do you and cut your hair in a way that makes you feel hot!” quips Hawkins. Now, if you feel lost and want something of a guidebook to follow when preparing for your next appointment, Abergel has a few tips.

“Before suggesting a bang, I always begin by pulling all the hair back and allowing the face to fully reveal itself,” says Abergel. “I look for the widest point—whether it’s the forehead, the cheekbones, or the jaw—and then observe the quality of the jawline: is it soft or angular? These details guide me in understanding the architecture of the face, helping me determine whether I’m working with a square, round, oval, or heart shape.” After this step, Abergel can determine if the bangs become a “thoughtful extension of the face, not just a haircut.”

How to Care for Bangs

• Use dry shampoo: Hawkins calls dry shampoo a bang-haver's best friend. "I’m obsessed with Sexy Hair’s Volumizing Dry Shampoo because it doesn't leave a cast and [will] keep your fringe from getting greasy," he recommends.
• Get flat clips: These kinds of clips are great for keeping your hair in place while you get ready to work against your hairline and any cowlicks. "Flat clips are gonna be a savior when trying to 'train' your hair to do what you want," Hawkins adds.
• Start with primer: Bangs can get easily damaged from excessive heat, so be sure to use a protective primer. Abergel recommends Virtue's Hair Volumizing Primer, which smooths and protects your strands from heat. "Then direct a blow dryer at the roots on low heat and low speed," he adds. "Use a round brush [to] smooth out that texture."
• Set with velcro rollers: "Depending on your texture, I’m not mad at a velcro roller," says Hawkins. Abergel also recommends these heatless tools, which he uses as a final step after blow-drying. Much like the shift we're seeing in fashion, hair trends are shaking off their stuffy "quiet luxury" aesthetics and instead returning to more joyful shapes and colours again. 1. Baby Bangs

If you've been considering a fringe, take this as your sign. Fringes are a timeless haircut addition, but for spring, we can expect to see baby bangs come to the fore. "Shorter, soft fringes will be a major trend for spring, like a face-framing baby bangs where the fringe sits just above the eyebrows but increases in length towards the outside, creating something super soft—think '90s Pamela Anderson as the inspiration and Alix Earle more recently," says Caspar Finch, stylist at Hershesons Fitzrovia. "The shape is usually achieved with either a razor or scissors depending on the chosen inspiration," he says.

2. Soft Bixie

The bixie cut, a hybrid between a pixie cut and bob haircut, is becoming far softer for spring. "The ‘bixie’ is a combination of a soft pixie cut and a short-textured bob, combining two shapes to create the bixie. For spring, this will still be a major trend," says Finch. "Look to Gracie Abrams for inspiration at the Chanel Couture show. The focus will be on softer, textured, lived-in finishes for the season ahead, enhanced by a styling cream such as the Hershesons Almost Everything Cream (£20)," he says.

"Make sure to show references to your stylist and ask them to create the shape around your features and facial proportions to best enhance your face shape and hair texture," adds Finch.

3. The Shag

The shag has been quietly making a comeback in recent months, and Izzy Warren, stylist at Hershesons Fitzrovia, tips it to be a defining haircut trend for spring 2026, and it's particularly great for those with curly hair textures.

"Less is definitely more at the moment, so if you’ve got a natural curl or wave, then it’s time to embrace your texture with the curly shag this season," she says. "It’s effortless yet sexy, especially when you have a few pieces of the bangs covering the eyes a little, with curls or waves falling around the face. Miley Cyrus has been seen wearing a longer version of this cut recently. For a more classic shag haircut, look to Suki Waterhouse or Pamela Anderson for inspiration," says Warren.

"For Spring/Summer 26, I’m predicting we’ll be seeing hair jewels; think metal hair pins and hair bands with metal embellishment," says Warren. "It instantly elevates a simple look like a ponytail or bun, or a cool, undone French twist enhanced with a metal hairpin. It feels a little vintage but super feminine, like Zoë Kravitz at the Golden Globes," she adds.

5. Chunky Bobs

We can't talk about spring hair trends for 2026 without talking about bob hair trends. And after a season of sleeker bobs, we can expect voluminous bobs to return with a bang for spring. "For Spring/Summer 2026, the bob will be looking a lot more full and choppy, holding a lot more weight overall for a chunkier, modern look," says Silver Mestre, stylist at Hershesons Fitzrovia. "What’s great about this look is that it can be worn in lots of different ways. It looks great blown out for a classic, polished look, or looks super cool and effortless when air-dried to enhance the hair’s natural texture," he says.

6. '00s Dirty Blonde

As for hair colour trends for spring, we can expect to see more "dirty blonde" hues being requested in salons, giving a nod to the Y2K hair colours we saw on the likes of Kate Moss and Sienna Miller in the early 2000s, says Nicole Kahlani, concept colourist at Hershesons Fitzrovia. It's one of the beauty trends making a comeback this year.

"I developed a technique called 3D scalp bleach, so that my clients, even those with dark brown hair, can achieve that super cool early-2000s Kate Moss or Sienna Miller 'dirty blonde', which will be highly requested for spring," she says.

"To achieve this, I utilise the traditional scalp bleach, then incorporate my 3D toning technique. I start by lightening the hair, then add a dark blonde root to add depth, and incorporate the balayage lowlighting technique, creating a seamless blend of the colours and beautiful dimension," she says. "This approach not only makes scalp bleach look incredibly natural but also yields a gorgeous blonde, even on darker bases."

7. Powdered Blonde

On the opposite end of the spectrum, we can also expect to see pearly, powdery blondes for spring 2026. "Powdered blonde is a colour influenced by 18th-century hair, as seen on Margot Robbie in Wuthering Heights," says Kahlani. "The look is chalky and dense, with less dimension. Blondes appear more one-toned, with a matte finish rather than a hyper-shiny look. Think dense golds with an ashy, antique effect," she says. "These are more natural blonde tones, reflecting a time when hair couldn't be coloured artificially. Even today, with colour melting, a seamless blend, the key is a global, natural-looking matte finish."

Allow me to declare: If bobs of all kinds—from tucked styles to flippy 'dos—defined 2025, bangs will undoubtedly dominate 2026. And if you opt for a bob with bangs? Consider yourself fluent in hair trends. "And for those of us with a few lines on our foreheads, I’ve always considered bangs to be 'French Botox," quips celebrity hairstylist Pamela Neal of Benjamin Salon. Side Bangs

Millennials, great news: Side bangs are so back. Take it from NYC-based makeup artist Lila Childs, who recently cut her fringe into a soft, side-swept style, content creator Natalie Shine, who opted for a BLSB (bitchy little side bang) this past January, or the side-banged models on Tory Burch's S/S 26 runway. "The timeless classic feels extra chic right now because it’s so effortlessly styled, perfect for second-day texture," agrees Giles Robinson, celebrity hairstylist for Color Wow.

To make sure they have that perfect swoop (as opposed to flopping over your eye), "Blow-dry directionally, [and] don’t fight their fall. Use a cream at the ends for shine and control," Robinson instructs. "If they droop, a quick one-second blast from a flat iron holds shape."

Gucci Bangs

"I recently created ‘Gucci bangs’ for Demi Moore, which were long, piecey bangs that hit near the brow bone and softly frame the face," shares Giannetos. They're similar to Bardot bangs, which frame the face with a lived-in, romantic shape, just a little shaggier. Still, they blend effortlessly into the surrounding layers, so you can't tell where your bangs end and longer, face-framing pieces begin. "I especially love these on long hair," Giannetos adds. "They are full, polished, and fashion-forward."

Wispy Bangs

Wispy bangs are a tad shorter than Gucci bangs but have the same piecey feel, end above the brow bone, and have a bit more separation. "For those with thick hair, wispy bangs are ideal for adding texture without heaviness," Giannetos shares. "Cut just around the brows, this style focuses on soft, feathered layers that create movement while staying low maintenance for everyday styling." Their choppy bits also make them feel stylish and intentional, notes Robinson, who recommends scrunching and finger-styling them with a curl spray to encourage texture.

Curly Bangs

“I love curly bangs right now—think Odessa A’Zion," shares Neal. I totally concur (her '70s-esque ringlets from the Critics' Choice Awards live rent-free in my mind), though I'd also add Rosé's 2026 Grammys look to the inspo board. To recreate that textured fringe, Giannetos recommends a longer, layered bang that works with the natural curl pattern—rather than fighting against it—which will ensure the look stays intentional and soft. (Remember to account for shrinkage!)

That said, the style thrives when you don't force your curls into a specific shape. "When it’s well thought out and given permission to do what it wants, it’s actually the cutest," Neal says. "It sends a signal of complete irreverence and naughtiness, which we need more of."

Le Petit Fringe

Micro bangs, baby bangs, tiny bangs, le petit fringe… Whatever you call them, know that this textured, short style is having a chic 2026 upgrade. According to Giannetos, these bangs instantly elevate a look with sharp lines, "framing the face in a way that feels fashion-forward and edgy." They also never fail to make you look extremely confident, the stylist adds. "No matter how the person dresses, they’ll always read as someone with a point of view," agrees Neal. "The haircut does all the work for them."

But what makes le petit fringe feel fresh this year is the slight texture around the edges, as opposed to a blunt finish. "They’re bold but with softness so they feel modern, not severe," Robinson adds. "Bold but soft, especially when styled to blend with natural texture." To style those wispy edges, grab a smidge of texturizing cream or wax to define the ends.

Birkin Bangs

Okay, I wouldn't exactly call Birkin bangs a "trend." They're classic at this point, but Giannetos does expect this style to skyrocket in popularity in the months ahead. "They’re timeless, French, and perfectly undone," he says of the thin, eyebrow-grazing fringe. Anyone can rock the '60s-inspired fringe, but Giannetos says they're especially fabulous for longer face shapes, as they shorten the face and create balance; square-shaped faces, as their wispy nature softens sharper features; and fine hair, as they add movement without weighing down the strands.

Curtain Bangs

Ah, curtain bangs. Similar to Birkin bangs, they'll never leave the chat! The longer, softly-parted fringe feels romantic and effortless, says Robinson, and is pretty low-commitment—a great choice for those just dipping their toes into the bang waters this year. "They age well as they grow out," he adds. Plus, they suit practically every face shape and hair type (perhaps why they remain so popular year after year). When they hit right at the cheekbone, Giannetos says they help elongate round faces and create definition without adding width. And for those with thicker locks, "Curtain bangs remove bulk while framing the face beautifully," he shares.

Styling them is a piece of cake, too, as you can simply clip them into place as they air-dry or blow-dry them upwards with a round brush for extra fluffiness. "If they flatten, a quick curl under with a small barrel brings life back," Robinson adds.

Shaggy Bangs

“Shaggy bangs, hanging in the eye, will always scream sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll—and that will never go out of style," shares Neal. (Pamela Anderson is my current muse with her feathery, icy-platinum lob.) “Fashion, music, and current culture always dictate street style, and the androgynous cats we’re seeing on runways and stages, with their cool vibes and important messages, are incredibly aspirational." From a practical standpoint, they're also quite low-maintenance; the more they spill into your field of vision, the cooler they look, so take it as your sign to embrace the grow-out process.

It still features all the elements of a shag haircut we know and love (hello, choppy layers and tousled texture), but the outline is much less harsh. Because of this, the muted shag appears effortlessly chic, and I can totally see why all the stars are opting for this laid-back finish. Allow me to preface this article by saying that I'm in desperate need of a haircut, and it's not just because I'm currently dealing with stringy, limp ends. I'm champing at the bit for a change. I've had the same long layers pretty much my whole life—aside from a stint of wispy bangs—and 2026 is officially the year I'm switching up my go-to 'do. Good thing I have an abundance of expert-backed hair trends to choose from! The entire list of cuts, colors, and styles is worth a scroll, but one dramatic chop (well, dramatic to me) refuses to leave my brain: the low bob.

"The low bob is really taking over," celebrity hairstylist Chris McMillan—whose longtime clients include Jennifer Aniston, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Leslie Bibb—tells me about the mounting trend. Below, discover all the details you need to get the look.

Essentially, the low bob is an iteration of the lob, one that's grown out just a bit longer. "I've been lobbing off a lot of hair lately, but the bobs are getting a little bit longer and sitting lower," McMillan shares. "This isn't a sharp, rigid cut. It's soft, wearable, and meant to move." Ideally, the ends of the bob brush the collarbones, just like Hailey Bieber's fresh cut courtesy of celebrity stylist Justine Marjan. At least, it is according to Pinterest Predicts's 2026 trend report, which declared that glitchy glam is one of the top beauty predictions for this year by a long shot. The brand cites an increase as high as 270% in searches for avant-garde makeup, mismatched nails, and asymmetrical lobs as the driving force behind this trend. Users are no longer interested in being pared-back clean girls and have a sense of creative direction when it comes to aesthetics.

Though there is a large sector of the industry that claims that editorial beauty never went away, there was a palpable shift toward minimalism during the past few post–COVID-19 pandemic years—from milk nails to countless bob trends and glass skin recipes. Now, the modern Gen Z and millennial tastemaker is setting their sights on bold beauty: a manicure with different colors on each hand (maybe even each finger), messy-chic eyeliner, and two-toned lip combos that prioritize contrast over blend. There are so many ways to interpret this trend, but we've noticed the following ideas in practice, courtesy of cool people in the wild. As the trend report states, "so long, symmetry."

Mismatched Nails

The search term "nails with different colors on each hand" saw a 125% increase on Pinterest in 2025, further dividing the minimalist and maximalist nail trends that soared on both sides of the style spectrum this past year. We beauty editors saw just as much action in the "sheer, barely there polish" realm as we did in the "loud, bold, heavily designed manicure" space (as seen in this mixed-polka-dot set by celebrity manicurist Queenie Nguyen), but the data shows that the latter will be more pronounced this year.

Dua Lipa's manicurist Michelle Humphrey was one of the first to pinpoint this trend way back in October 2025 thanks to model Iris Law's multicolored manicure. "It's just a bit off," she previously told Who What Wear. "Very cool, in my opinion." If you want to take this trend up a notch, try going for a different design on each nail, like this cyberpunk set from manicurist Oksana Zavora.

Halo Hair

Hair color trends come and go, but we have yet to see one as bold as the halo dye jobs on stars like singer Rosalía and Olympic figure skater Alysa Liu. While promoting her latest album, Lux, the Spanish singer has been diving into divine themes in her personal style—most noticeably with a blonde ring of hair bleached tactfully around the crown of her head to mimic a real-life halo. The style was originally designed by the late celebrity hairstylist Jesus Guerrero and is now in the care of Evanie Frausto, according to an article in Vogue.

Liu's style, created by St. Louis colorist Kelsey Miller, is an even bolder version of Rosalía's delicate crown with high-contrast dyed halos down the length of her hair to form a striped pattern. The Olympian's roots are dark (likely to hide growth during the extensive Winter Games) before fading into thick bleached-blonde halos—most noticeably around the bangs and eyes before repeating down the length of her long hair. Pinterest's trend report shows a 100% increase in searches for "eccentric makeup" and a 115% spike in "weird makeup looks" in 2025, though we have a better word for this style of makeup: editorial. While re-creating this captivating cosmic eye look by maximalist makeup artist Lynda Florae at home may sound ambitious, these are exactly the kinds of looks that beauty savants have been referencing for inspiration in the last 12 months. Finally, this painterly style of makeup is entering the mainstream, starting with Swedish pop singer Zara Larsson's headline-making Midnight Sun Tour glam.

Created in collaboration with celebrity makeup artist Sophia Sinot, Larsson's rhinestone-studded, vibrant stage glam is undeniably editorial, and starry seas and interplanetary scenes serve as inspiration for several of her looks, according to a post on the MUA's Instagram. You might not have the time to go full editorial glam every day, but it's chic to take elements from these eye looks and incorporate them into your regular routine, like a sweep of chromatic eye shadow over the lids or a touch of colorful liner against bare lashes. Asymmetrical Lob

When we think of asymmetrical haircuts, our minds immediately go to pop singer Ava Max's significantly unbalanced blonde tresses, where one side is often sheared as short as her shoulder and the other worn to her waist. While this is one of the more extreme length differences we've seen in an asymmetrical cut, that's not to say it's impossible to pull off. Max's look is entirely convincing us to grab scissors, but we'll restrain ourselves until we get to the salon.

If you want a more easily wearable version of the singer's cool-girl cut, try an asymmetrical lob, which shot up in Pinterest searches by 85% this year. Selena Gomez recently debuted a chic iteration of this style at a Rare Beauty launch event with the ends subtly tilting on a diagonal slant from one side to the other.

As a beauty editor who studies hair trends for a living, it's only natural that I'm always on the lookout for the next big haircut trend or hair colour trend. And while we might only be halfway through January, there is one bob hair trend that is quickly emerging amongst celebrities such as Hailey Bieber, Lily Colins and Sofia Richie Grainge. And that's the bevelled bob.

What Is the Bevelled Bob?

Inspired by the sloping curves you find in fine jewellery, the bevelled bob has soft, flicked ends that create a rounded, face-framing effect. Think of it as the cousin of the flicked bob, but this time, the ends of the bob are gently curving inwards. Much like Hailey Bieber's recent lob haircut.

It's a hair trend that celebrity hairstylist Larry King has spotted. "We’ve been living in the world of the Italian and French bobs—playful, flicky, full of movement," he says. "But I think the direction is changing. Bobs are going cleaner and more tucked-in. Less of that kicked-out texture, more of a smooth bevel under the jaw. It’s polished without feeling overdone," he says.

It also speaks to a wider theme at play with haircut trends right now. “I don’t think 2026 will belong to one specific cut—it’s more of a shift in attitude," says King. "Hair is moving toward a sleeker, more refined finish. For longer lengths, especially, we’re stepping away from those big, bouncy blowouts that have had their moment. Instead, I’m seeing this rise of super-straight, ultra-glossy, almost liquid-looking hair," he says. "It feels expensive, intentional, and incredibly modern—that’s the energy of 2026."

“Twenty-twenty-six haircuts are about repeatability and retention,” says Curtis. “Rounded lobs continue to perform strongly because they offer versatility across age groups and styling preferences,” he adds. The stylist explains that the style’s utilization of internal layering preserves “longevity between appointments,” allowing you to go longer without touchups.

Modern Mullet

Yet another short style making waves this year is what stylists call the “modern mullet”—aka a smoother, more polished take on the androgynous ’80s style. “The modern mullet remains relevant but has softened to increase its commercial appeal, moving from niche trend to broader adoption,” says Curtis. Case in point? Taylor Hill’s short, cool-girl style. The model wears her wavy strands in soft, smooth curls across her forehead and at the nape of her neck, with the style shorn in closer at the ears to form the mullet silhouette.

Celebrity hairstylist Lacy Redway expects aged-up versions of the hair trends that dominated 2025 to trickle into the new year. “I think we will continue to see them expressed in shorter lengths and in new, interesting textures, bringing them into a modern space and allowing for more self-expression,” she explains. “We aren't afraid of products and are willing to let them assist us in achieving our desired looks.” Hence, the recommendations below.

We understand bob fatigue, as Prada bobs, French bobs, and crinkle-cut bobs can all start to blend when you look at them for too long. But Redway confirms that “bobs are not going anywhere” in 2026, especially when it concerns the sculpted kind. “They can stand the test of time because they are chic and classic,” she explains.

Take, for instance, Tyla’s sharply flipped bob, which upends in a sharp flick at the jawline and is accentuated by peekaboo micro braids. Her perfectly coiffed style is one worth banking for the dressier events in your calendar this year.

This may not come as a surprise, but curtain bangs are here to stay in 2026. Though iterations of these ‘60s-inspired bangs have been trending for decades, we see a more substantial bang fused with traditional curtain layers this year, à la Edgar-Jones’s swooping style.

Curtis attests that as long as we’re seeing this style on celebrities, clients will be asking for it in salons—and for good reason. “Curtain bangs continue to drive bookings, but are now designed to integrate seamlessly into the haircut, improving grow-out and reducing maintenance friction for clients,” the hairstylist explains. This blended cut makes for easy styling and is a great gateway style before trying other trendy bangs.

Fringy Pixie

If you’ve ever thought about going short—and we mean pixie short—the style set agrees that 2026 is the year to go for it. Priano predicts that soft pixies with longer fringe, much like Delilah Belle Hamlin’s piecey cut (which is rumored to be inspired by her mother, Lisa Rinna’s, signature style), will take center stage this year.

Though this cut is still undeniably short, you’re encouraged to play with length around the perimeter of the face for the “feminine, versatile” look that Priano loves. Plus, she points out that this extra fringe makes it easier to style in your day-to-day.

As Redway stated earlier, bobs are going nowhere this year—they’re just leveling up. There are a number of celebrity hairstyles saved to my phone that are taking up more storage space than I care to admit. From Hailey Bieber’s cool, relaxed lob to Olandria Carthen’s rich-looking blonde, I get so much of my inspiration from the It girls who pepper my feed—and the algorithm just served me a perfectly curated Instagram dump of Maude Apatow’s crinkle-cut chop that is sure to earn its rank among the top bob trends of 2026.

The Euphoria actress stepped onto the scene at this weekend’s W Magazine Best Performances Party donning a softly waved bob fashioned by L.A.-based celebrity hairstylist Cherilyn Farris. Clipped right at the jaw and swooping slightly inward toward her face, Apatow’s style is a master class in the relaxed, easy elegance that we’re seeing trend in the new year.

“[Twenty twenty-six] is taking the bob we all know and love and ramping it up,” celebrity hairstylist Dimitris Giannetos previously told Who What Wear. This isn’t to say that these styles are going to become more complex or hard to manage—quite the opposite, actually, and Apatow’s chop is a perfect example. “[They] are going to feel customized, expressive, and reflective of how you style your hair day to day,” he added.

These dreamy snaps prove that this versatile style can be easily dressed up with a floor-length Chloé dress (her subtle waves mimic the gown’s tiered ruffles perfectly) or worn casually with a good pair of jeans for an easy, everyday look. While Apatow’s is the latest to catch my eye, there are so many more wavy, lived-in bobs cluttering my hairspo board. From Ayo Edebiri’s recent side-parted shear at the 2026 Golden Globes to Gracie Abrams’s signature effortlessly tousled chop, we’re being fed bob inspiration left and right.

Edebiri's hair is yet another romantic, retro style I've seen command the red carpet this award season. Parted to the side and swirled into voluminous curls at the ends, this style is a more done-up version of Apatow's waves.

Though I don’t have an exact play-by-play of the process behind Apatow’s freshly clipped bob, I am a beauty editor who used to style a (now-grown-out) bob and have experimented with more hair products than I can count. A warm, dimensional brunette is one of winter's richest-looking hair colors, and according to Hazan, the hue is showing no signs of slowing down for 2026. "It allows color to evolve without being one exact shade," she notes. "Jessica Simpson is a perfect example. I made her [a] 'hot chocolate' brunette, deepening her blonde and adding in darker shades." The color should read warm without leaning too red or brassy, Hazan explains further on Instagram, which you can achieve by asking your colorist for toffee-hued highlights that provide tons of dimension and movement.

Butter-Gold Blonde

According to Mallett, butter-gold blonde is also on the up and up. "We're going to see a lot of that," he confirms. This creamy and warm buttery hue sits between toasted sand and dark honey on the blonde spectrum. Justine Skye's vibrant color is the perfect reference photo, as her strands look practically candlelit.

Midnight

If you can't stop thinking about Odessa A'zion's raven curls, well, same. Dreamy spirals aside, her rich onyx hue is inspiring brunettes everywhere to hold the highlights and lean into a midnight tone.

Gigi Hadid, who recently swapped her honey-blonde tresses for a matte black mini bob. “This matte black color is the newest era of true black—rich and inky, without any red undertones,” says celebrity hairstylist and colorist Dimitris Giannetos in an editor-exclusive release. “We’ve moved past the traditional blue-black hue to something more elevated and fashion-forward." At the same time, Hazan expects blondes to become even creamier and more vibrant. "Brunettes are having their moment, but a high-maintenance blonde will be coveted in 2026," she declares. "Cowboy copper" may have reigned the past couple of years, but in 2026, it's all about those rich red-brown tones. "The low bob is really taking over," he shares. "I’ve been lobbing off a lot of hair lately, but the bobs are getting a little bit longer and sitting lower." Case in point? Hailey Bieber's recent chop, pictured above, features a collarbone length and blended layers. "This isn’t a sharp, rigid cut. It’s soft, wearable, and meant to move," McMillan adds. It's also the perfect cut to show off healthy ends, he notes, calling it a great choice for "hair that looks good without trying too hard." Sign me up.

Mena cosigns the low bob frenzy. "[A] grown-out bob is on the horizon; buckle up!" he tells me. "It’s relaxed yet polished, with that French ease and Milan-girl confidence." According to O'Connor, 2026 cuts are beautifully rough around the edges—think choppy layers, wispy bangs, and hardcore texture. "Punky piece-y is in for 2026. Doesn't matter if it's on medium-length hair or a pixie," she shares. "We'll see a lot of that texture and dimension in cuts this year." I also like to think of it as "concert hair," a tousled, punk-rock edge that oozes downtown cool.

Remember that whole millennial versus Gen Z side-bangs debate? Yeah, consider that officially over and done with. "I know they’ve gotten hate in the past, but I think they’re back and in style for 2026," O'Connor says of the side-bang revival. Ariana Grande has been a champion of the side-swept style as of late, as is Zoë Kravitz, who donned a wavy side-fringe at the Caught Stealing premiere and Saint Laurent S/S 26 show in Paris.

Soft, Subtle Layers

While a punk, intentionally choppy style is definitely up-and-coming, all the stylists I spoke to also called out layered, lived-in haircuts with intentional shapes that embrace your natural grow-out phase. To achieve this, McMillan recommends opting for "internal texture," where a stylist removes weight from the inside of your mane, ensuring the perimeter stays soft. "The hair moves better, styles faster, and looks more natural," he says. "You get that lived-in, tousled feel without it looking messy or dated. It’s the kind of cut that works whether you blow it out or let it air-dry."

Mallett similarly predicts a massive return to haircuts with soft perimeters, noting that they have a "slipped-in look" that never appears overdone. "Hair should feel effortless, not over-styled, and look even better as it grows out," adds Mena, and subtle layering will ensure you don't wind up with any uneven shapes later on.

Okay, when is shiny hair not on-trend? Well, according to Hazan, "Reflective, super-shiny, glass hair will be status quo in the salon chair or at-home." Especially as darker, richer hair colors stay en vogue, a glossy, liquid-like shine becomes even more top of mind to ensure the hue always looks expensive. After all, as McMillan quips, "Healthy hair is the real luxury, so shine is everything."

Lived-In Texture

O'Connor has three words when it comes to styling predictions for 2026: "Texture, texture, texture." Whether it's piece-y, waved, or leaning into your natural bounce, he expects tons of movement this year over perfectly sleek 'dos. "Undone and lived-in is a personal favorite [style] of mine and, I'm happy to report, very in," he adds.

Mallett seconds the notion, posing it as a revolution against overly polished, "Instagram" blowouts. "It's more hippie-ish, it's more street, and it's more cool," he explains.

Big '80s Blowouts

That said, McMillan is quick to declare that "Big, expensive-looking hair is definitely back." Think fluffy, va-va-voom volume over casually polished beach waves, relying on roller sets, velcro rollers, and hot rollers. Bonus points if you opt for an '80s swoopy side part á la Olivia Dean and Bella Hadid. "We’re seeing real blowouts again," McMillan adds, so grab a round brush and texturizing spray and embrace your bouncy, gravity-defying roots.

Romantic Updos

Calling it now: Romantic updos will be all the rage in 2026. Think sweeping twists with wispy, face-framing tendrils and intricately braided buns, as the one Chase Infiniti wore during the One Battle After Another press tour—a breathtaking style that's forever cemented into my brain. To enhance the romance even further, feel free to add some hair jewelry into the mix, like Zoë Kravitz at the 2026 Golden Globes. "Finding simple ways to dress up everyday hairstyles is in, whether it’s dressing up braids or a pony," O'Connor mentions, suggesting ribbons, bows, and crystal-adorned clips.

Of all the hairstyles that I’ve considered (and actually committed to)—a French bob, highlights, etc.—the one I never thought I’d actually go through with is bangs. But something changed inside of me when I began preparing for an autumnal jaunt to Paris, France, where the haircuts are chic and always a step ahead of the American trend cycle. Call it selective attention, but I soon began noticing this chic, wispy shear everywhere I turned; from ‘60s-inspired Bardot fringe to dreamy curtain bangs. Sure, bangs were irrefutably one of the hottest fall hair trends of 2025, but there was something about my muse’s specific style that sang to me like a siren.

As a Y2K baby, I grew up idolizing the chic women whose distinct '90s hairstyles became synonymous with their very beings. (Think: Jennifer Aniston’s “Rachel” haircut, the “Halle Berry” pixie.) However, after being told that I resembled a young Penélope Cruz in my early teen years (no, I don’t believe it; yes, I still hold onto that compliment dearly), I began looking to the Spanish actress for aesthetic inspiration as I honed my personal style. After impulsively booking a haircut with celebrity hairstylist Xavier Velasquez, the mastermind behind Scarlett Johansson’s and AnnaSophia Robb’s manes, I gathered my inspiration photos into a mood board. Nearly every shot was of Cruz with her piecey, tousled, and effortlessly chic bangs from the 2001 film Vanilla Sky—and the stylist wasn’t surprised in the slightest to see my Cruz-shrine of a hairspo board.

What are Penélope Cruz bangs?

“There is a carefree vibe about the Penélope references that makes it a statement, but also doesn’t take itself too seriously—like second-day hair that always feels elevated,” Velasquez tells Who What Wear. As the name describes, this wispy, side-sweeping style is inspired by Cruz’s romantic, cool-girl fringe from the early aughts. It’s characterized by curtain bangs along the perimeter of the face and wispy fringe across the center, with the ability to be styled straight across or parted down the middle. The rest of the hair is left long, with scattered, lengthy layers that add movement and boost the appearance of thickness.

In effortless movie star fashion, the length of the hair is perfectly unpolished, with tousled ends that add a lived-in feel. The result is a look that my friends haven't been able to stop complimenting—even WWW Senior Beauty Editor Jamie Schneider stopped to tell me I "look famous" after getting this brow-skimming chop.

Why are Penélope Cruz bangs trending right now?

“Bangs are trending in a big way, from mega pop stars like Taylor [Swift] and Sabrina Carpenter on world tours to Dakota Johnson wearing her iconic bangs in this year’s Materialists,” Velasquez explains. Even Saturday Night Live got the message when Glen Powell led a sketch titled "Bob Army," where the "bangs" and "bob" battled it out for style domination. (The bobs won, but just for now…)

Swift’s and Johnson’s styles swoop more dramatically across the forehead than Carpenter’s ’70s-inspired fringe, but Velasquez says this Cruz-referenced style is a symbiosis of both. He describes this timeless style as a cross between “a full bang and a curtain bang,” with a shorter drop in the center and “drama [around] the eyebrows.” If your interest is piqued, give your hairstylist that exact recipe to replicate this vintage-inspired look.

The process:

Before my visit, I’d grown my hair from a chin-skimming Italian bob to free-falling, wavy locks that fell to my chest. Wanting to sustain the length I’d grown while lifting away dead weight, Velasquez scattered delicate, long layers throughout my hair for extra movement.

Then, he separated my hair into a front and back section, starting nearly an inch away from my hairline. He kept my natural part in mind—working with the off-center split of my hair to help this style fall naturally day after day. Cruz’s style circa 2001 was often worn parted down the center, but you by no means have to force a center part to make it work.

From there, Velasquez twisted the front pieces between his fingers and snipped them to a length that landed near the tips of my ears. After letting the newly sheared fringe fall, he began shaping the aforementioned center drop and curtain bang “drama.” The shortest section is the innermost, where the fringe still falls past my brows when straightened, but gingerly masks them when styled swooped to the side, as pictured below.

You can achieve this look by blowing out your bangs at a front angle and treating the ends with a tiny amount of hair serum to make a few sections cling to one another.

Suki Waterhouse's Bardot bangs:

Suki Waterhouse's shaggy curtain bangs are the stuff of Bardot-hair dreams. Ask your stylist for thick curtain bangs that taper towards the eyes ever so slightly in the center. This look is more about length and texture than clean-cut, eye-lining structure.

How to style:

To infuse the most volume and hydration into my strands, I prepped and primed my mane with Virtue Labs’ Full Shampoo and its matching conditioner. Yep, they're on the cusp of a comeback), such as pearl blonde hair, but the general feeling is effortless, natural-looking haircuts, hair colours and styles.

To find out the hair colours, haircuts and hairstyles that will define 2026, I spoke to London's top hairstylists and hair salons for their definitive trends that will define the next 12 months. 1. Pearl Blonde

"With Margot Robbie starring in the new Wuthering Heights adaptation, I see a muted grey powdered blonde trending for 2026, with her hair as the ultimate inspiration, whether that's embracing your natural greys or completely stepping away from warm golden blondes," predicts concept colourist Nicole Kahlani at Hershesons Fitzrovia. "It has an almost 18th-century feel, where the finish is more matte and dense. It’s about embracing more natural ash blonde undertones, and again having this colour as a global application, taking inspiration from that period in time where there was no dimension or multiple tones," she says.

Kahlani explains that this statement hair colour is often seen on runway models. "The hair colour is kept in a natural blonde tone, embracing more muted, mousey shades," she says. "To add a touch of colour, the ends can be lifted half a shade lighter to brighten the overall appearance slightly. However, in general, the goal is to achieve an antique, dusty feel," she says.

Before you go pearl blonde, a word of warning: maintaining this hair colour takes a lot of maintenance, so consult your hair colourist to make sure this hair colour is achievable, and stock up on toning products like a purple shampoo or hair mask to keep the pearl tone from turning brassy, and a good hair repair product to keep bleached lengths as healthy as possible.

2. Slate Brunette

On the brunette front, it's also the same story with cooler, icier tones, which are also dominating brunette hair colours for 2026.

"Many brunettes wish to maintain their natural tone, which often has grey undertones. This can create a chalky appearance that isn't too dark. It's similar to a mocha brunette, but the grey undertone gives an illusion of a darker shade," says Kahlani. "This results in a more mysterious brunette with a cooler tone that is striking without washing you out like a very dark, almost black brunette. The key is to avoid going too dark; instead, add a lot of ash to the colour formula," she says.

If you're already brunette, it's easy to switch things up to a cooler, deeper tone with an in-salon toner or hair gloss that gives your lengths a semi-permanent hue. But there are also plenty of at-home hair glosses and hair colour-depositing hair masks that allow you to experiment with a deeper tone before going for permanent hair colour. And if you're already a dark, cool-toned brunette, then a clear hair gloss will also make your natural colour richer and glossier with an expensive-looking shine.

3. Burnt Blonde

Running alongside the pearl blonde trend is also the demand for warmer, golden and more natural-looking blondes. And every single hair expert I spoke to about hair trends has predicted it to be a major hair colour trend in 2026. "Think of a young Kate Moss before balayage techniques became mainstream," says Kahlani. "This style gives the illusion of a natural blonde tint, embracing warmth with a slight copper hue. It reflects a time before everyone became obsessed with creating ash and white blondes," she says.

Some more hair colour trends I’m hoping to see next year are soft, warm bronde blends," says Zoe Irwin, hairstylist and Glaze ambassador. "[It's] a seamless merge between brown and blonde, adding dimension and a subtle glow while staying natural and warm, golden blondes that look effortlessly natural. I appreciate hair colours that look 'real' but polished," she says. "Kind of like skin that’s been beautifully bronzed or dewy, not obviously 'done'."

It's also a trend that Jay Blitsas, colourist at Larry King South Kensington, predicts will be big for 2026. "Warm undertones are back and are back to stay," he says. "I think some blonde shades that will be big next year include warm, luminous tones. Think soft beige blondes that feel natural, warm and classy," he says. 4. Straight and Sleek Styles

With big bouncy blow-drys and loose curls dominating over the past few years, it feels fitting that we're seeing a return to sleek silhouettes for 2026. They're almost a palette-cleanser to the big hair that has reigned alongside the rise in hot brushes and hair multi-styler launches in recent years. But for 2026, you may be reaching for your hair straighteners again.

“I don’t think 2026 will belong to one specific cut; it’s more of a shift in attitude, and hair is moving toward a sleeker, more refined finish," says celebrity hairstylist Larry King. "For longer lengths especially, we’re stepping away from those big, bouncy blowouts that have had their moment. Instead, I’m seeing this rise of super-straight, ultra-glossy, almost liquid-looking hair," he says. "It feels expensive, intentional and incredibly modern—that’s the energy of 2026.”

5. Bevelled Bob

In case you were wondering, no, bobs aren't going anywhere for 2026. But following suit of the sleeker styles we're seeing on longer lengths, we're also seeing a straighter silhouette bob haircuts and lobs, like Hailey Bieber's relaxed lob haircut, which has gently flicked, bevelled ends that frame the face.

“We’ve been living in the world of the Italian bobs and French bobs—playful, flicky, full of movement. But I think the direction is changing," says King. "For 2026, bobs are going cleaner and more tucked-in. Less of that kicked-out texture, more of a smooth bevel under the jaw. It’s polished without feeling overdone," he says. If you want a visual, look at Sofia Richie Grainge and Sydney Sweeney—they’re already wearing the future.”

We've already seen blunt bob hairstyles and the tuft bob take off in recent months, so we can expect to see more sleek bob shapes with gently bevelled ends as we go into 2026. The major plus is that it's so easy to add a gentle flick to the ends of your hair, whether you use a hair straightener, a hot brush or a round brush with your hair dryer.

Short haircuts, such as the pixie haircut, will continue to trend well into 2026 with a Y2K influence, but this time around, the shapes and silhouettes are softer and less structured.

"Pixies in 2026 are going to feel playful and expressive rather than sharp and architectural. It’s short hair with personality," says King. "The 2000s revival isn’t slowing down, and shorter cuts fit right into that. Think of a modern take on Victoria Beckham’s ‘Pob’, but with texture, softness and fewer hard lines," he says.

7. Indie Sleeze Fringes

“With indie sleaze creeping back into fashion, I can definitely see fuller, more textured fringes making a return. Not the soft, airy curtains we’ve been cutting nonstop, these have more substance and character," says King. "They’re still lived-in and effortless, but with a weight that frames the face in a stronger way," he says.

Following in suit are the micro fringes that dominated the early 2010s. “I’d love to see micro fringes come back," says King. "They’re bold in theory, but they don’t need to look severe. When you keep them soft and textured, they become incredibly wearable. Audrey Hepburn is the perfect example—her micro fringe was iconic, but it still felt gentle and elegant. That’s the sweet spot," he says.

To do this, we asked celebrity hairstylists Naeemah Lafond and Chaz Dean to clue us in on what we can expect as we reach the end of this year and kick off a new one, and are sharing all the details (plus juicy tips and tricks on how to get each look) below.

Which Colors Will Dominate This Season?

According to our experts, winter 2025 will be all about leaning into the luxe, warm shades the season is so heavily associated with: think moody elegance with a high-shine, polished finish that takes your strands to the next level. "This winter is all about rich, cozy tones. Chocolate browns and those deep, moody reds are going to be everywhere," says Lafond. "Jet black and deep brown pixie cuts are also going to be huge again. Nia Long and Halle Berry photos from the '90s are still being referenced to this day."

Dean agrees, also identifying softer, coppery, buttery blondes as shades to watch for this winter. "I think that just goes with the season because when it’s colder out, you generally want to ‘warm’ things up! We’ve had cooler tones for so many years that there’s been a noticeable shift in the color palette when clients come into the salon," he explains. Dean predicts that the warm color trends we've seen over the last couple of years will continue to hold strong and embrace a low-maintenance, natural appearance. "I think it’s great because you don’t need to spend a lot of time and money to make a significant impact," he continues.

Chocolate Brown

What better way to lean into the coziness of the season than by wearing an elegant, deep shade like chocolate brown? We first caught a glance of the transitional hair hue on Hailey Bieber at this year's Academy Museum Gala (a departure from the lightly highlighted look we've seen her in on and off throughout 2025). Not only does her new dark chocolate brown hair exude elegance, but it also signals an official shift from its milky counterpart, bordering on blonde.

Toasted Blonde

Cozy hues will be on the rise for winter, and while the rich browns, ink blacks, and bright coppers we enjoyed all fall are certainly here to stay, warm blonde will also be on the rise. This season's sunniest shade has been dubbed "toasted blonde"—aka a warm, soft color that adds brightness to your winter tresses. To pull off the color, request a glowing, warm-neutral blonde with a glossy finish from your hairstylist. No wonder actress Margot Robbie wore the hair color to the Chanel spring/summer 2026 show.

Natural highlights can be achieved by all hair colors, and they play perfectly into the '90s-inspired, full-bodied blowouts and "glass hair" that will be everywhere this winter. Mia Goth attended the Frankenstein red carpet at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival with soft pops of lived-in, light brown at the ends of chocolate brown strands. The addition of romantic bangs and tousled waves helps bring the timeless look together.

Ink Black

Lafond predicts we'll be seeing inky black hair make a reappearance for pixie cuts this winter, but it's also being spotted on long and mid-length strands. Kendall Jenner walked the red carpet of the fifth Annual Academy Museum Gala wearing the timeless shade in a butterfly cut to add fluttery layers and softness. The eye-catching shade is perfect for anyone with a soft spot for a little drama.

Butter Blonde

Another color that will be on demand this season was recently worn by model Elsa Hosk while posing for cameras at the 2025 Baby2Baby Gala. This year, people are gravitating toward a warm, soft blonde (popularly with a honeyed balayage finish) that gives the complexion a candlelit glow during the darker months. The color also grows out seamlessly between touch-ups and looks just as stunning as winter shifts to spring.

Which Styles Will Be Trending?

When it comes to the styles you can expect to see on all the most stylish people (including your favorite fashion-forward celebrities), this winter will be defined by softness and movement. "Style-wise, we're easing back into glamour, but in a way that feels more lived-in and relatable," explains Lafond. "Think soft roller sets, bouncy blowouts, smooth silk presses, and that effortless 'I put in effort, but I'm not stressing' kind of glam." For example, she anticipates this season's pixie cuts will be all about looking done and slightly disheveled in a chic way. "It's polished but not precious," she adds.

Last year's ultra-polished styles captured our attention, but experts are predicting a departure as we head into the conclusion of 2025. "Last year's hair was very 'done'—every curl defined, every strand in formation. This year, the energy is softer. More ease, more movement, more personality," Lafond tells us. "It's still beautiful and elevated, but it feels real. Like you can go to work, then dinner, and your hair still makes sense. Plus, the nostalgic styles we've spotted all over the runways and red carpets are also here to stay, but with a fresh twist. "Whether it's soft highlights, Old Hollywood waves, or a modern wolf cut, these looks come and go, but they always return in a new way," she continues.

Dean echoed a similar sentiment, touching on the influence of the film, TV, and music industry and trending public figures. "The cuts and styles trickle into the mainstream consumer and client psyche. I think everything will continue to cycle in and out within a year or two of its popularity," he says. According to Dean, we can expect to see hair trends typically shift, "to the opposite end," of what was once popular.

Ghost Waves

Low-maintenance looks have been on our radar since they spiked in popularity last summer, but "ghost waves" (coined by hairstylist Tom Smith) have continued to haunt our FYPs. The trend's name references a styling technique characterized by undetectable bends and a clean middle part to enhance natural texture. Ideal for every hair type, this breezy style has been spotted on celebrities like Laura Harrier and Daisy Edgar-Jones.

Baby Bangs

Blunt baby bangs are full of personality and are experiencing another renaissance just in time for you to try in winter 2025. They're frequently paired with micro bobs, bixies, and textured pixies. This cut adds dimension to styles while framing the face. The trend was recently worn by The Bear's Ayo Edebiri on the red carpet of the fifth annual Academy Museum Gala. Our jaws dropped when we saw model Taylor Hill pose for the cameras for the first time with this cropped cut last year, and we've continued to see the whisper pixie on the rise. "Glass Hair"

"Glass hair" (aka one of the most popular hair moments of 2025) will be back on top this season. As the name implies, the trend refers to achieving a high-shine, super-sleek effect. The elegant look can be created with the help of a product like the Oribe Mirror Rinse Glass Treatment ($64) that softens, detangles, and delivers a mirror-like finish in one step. We like to think of glass hair as the sister trend to the "liquid hair" championed by actress Dakota Johnson.

Soft Roller Set

The majority of this season's trendiest cuts and styles are nods to nostalgia, so it's no surprise that soft roller sets are also having a moment. For natural textures (2a–4c), this style offers an opportunity to smooth away frizz, boost volume, and play with straight styles without sacrificing the health of your curls and coils. Textured Wolf Cut

Along with the sleek, effortless styles this winter, you can also expect high-texture wolf cuts to make an appearance as temperatures take a dip. Not only can this cut work for all hair textures, but it's also extremely versatile and easy to achieve with lots of layers, amped up volume, and curls galore. For inspiration this winter, we will be looking to everyone from singer Renée Rap to actor and model Indya Moore.

Relaxed Pixie

Jourdan Dunn is the queen of relaxed pixie cuts in our book and continues to stun with the cut for red carpet appearances like the one above. While it resembles the traditional pixie cut à la Audrey Hepburn that Old Hollywood was so enamored with, the modern-day interpretation of the style introduces a laid-back edge that can be brought to life by adding ample texture. Dunn's ink-black take also leans into the "wet" hair trend we've seen all year.

"It’s less about one dominating the other, and more about choosing which mood suits you—clean and refined, or big and expressive."

"The pixie haircut is a really flattering, cheekbone-enhancing style that can be personalised to suit your hair type and face shape," Sakkas tells me. "As we head into a new season, we’re going to be seeing more grown-up versions of the pixie, which are more defined with layered, shattered fringes. "The shag is having a revival," says Sakkas. "For winter, it’s full of serrated and seamless textures, with feathered layers and retro choppy waves. This cut speaks to a rebellious spirit and has the power to completely transform your look."

"Don’t pull it too tight; you want it to look modern with softness and an effortless finish," he advises. Last night, French hairstylist John Nollet posted an Instagram Story of Anderson's new 'do from Paris Fashion Week, and it has since caused a frenzy on the internet; Anderson, after all, is well known for her golden, tousled lengths.

Soft, Fluid Layers vs. High Maintenance

For the past few months, we've experienced a late-'90s/Y2K revival across the beauty space that's all but completely taken over our For You Pages, Explore Pages, and Pinterest boards. Whether you love it or hate it, expect to see more of the trend IRL as the temperatures take a dip. "This year, clients are moving away from anything that feels too polished or high maintenance," explains Michael. "Instead, we’re seeing softer, more fluid layers with a ’90s and early 2000s influence—think feathered blowouts, mid-length shags, and playful curtain bangs." These looks are soft, versatile, and perfect for pairing with your favorite cozy sweaters and chunky boots.

Cowgirl Fringe Bob vs. Choppy, Asymmetrical Bob

The jury's in, and it's looking like last year's edgy, high-textured bobs won't be making the rounds this fall. Are we surprised? A little, but we also saw the rise of their replacement (luxe-yet-effortless bobs) coming after they began to be spotted on the runway last fall. "The choppy asymmetrical bob with heavy layering is on its way out, being replaced by a flirtatious kind of cowgirl fringe bob. I think we are starting to see a shift in beauty where women want their look to appear more effortless and natural," Puncerelli explains. In other words, it's time to put down your shears and pick up the finishing spray.

Toasty Tones vs. Icy Extremes

Wondering what colors the most stylish people will be racing to the salons to get before everyone else catches on? Last year was all about the return of the butter blonde and cowboy copper, but this fall we'll be leaning into warm tones that take after the changing leaves. "On the color side, warmer, more dimensional tones are taking the place of [icy tones]: golden blondes, warm beige brunettes, and copper-inspired reds," says Michael. "These shades feel cozier, softer, and more wearable, especially for fall/winter." Then, once spring comes back around, you can always take the same color and go a couple shades lighter for the ideal transition style.

Lived-In and Sun-Kissed vs. Ombré Shades

While some places in the Western hemisphere may experience fewer sunny days once fall rolls around, fall is the perfect excuse to add some warmth to your hair with lived-in and sun-kissed styles. "Another trend that is already pretty much out the door is the ombre hair color. [It's] being replaced with more natural, sun-kissed strands and a grown-out, lived-in look, predicts Puncerelli. Over the past couple of years, celebrities like Hailey Bieber and EmRata have premiered stunning hair colors that fall in this category, so we'll be keeping an eye out for more inspiration all season long.

Polished and Luxe vs. Undone Tresses

Just because our hair experts are predicting less high-maintenance styles on the horizon doesn't mean polished styles aren't being requested by their stylish clientele. In fact, we're expecting to see even more luxe bobs, bouncy lobs, and glossy, long lengths with the arrival of fall and well into winter. "As we transition into winter, I see styles becoming a little more polished and luxe. The volume and layers will stay, but they’ll be paired with more refinement—shinier finishes, sleeker blowouts, and structured styling that feels holiday-ready," Michael tells us. Rooty Coloring vs. Bright Blondes

So, we're not saying that butter-blonde strands will be completely out this year, but these hairstylists are predicting the color will just be going a few shades darker and keeping natural-looking roots for an on-trend, lived-in look. "I'm predicting we're going to start seeing less super bright blondes and more lived-in rooty coloring. Definitely darker hair color," Puncerelli shares. Rich, Multidimensional Shades vs. Light and Airy

Adding dimension to your hair fall styles can be as simple as selecting a color that's deep enough to add some intrigue to your look. This season, Michael predicts we'll be returning to "traditional" colors for this time of year with an unexpected twist. "Color will deepen and get richer. Expect brunettes to go warmer and multidimensional, blondes to shift into honey tones, and coppers to intensify with more depth," Michael predicts. "Clients love cozy, flattering shades in the winter months, and this year’s palette leans toward richness and glow instead of icy extremes."

Natural Graying vs. Cover-Up Coloring

With all this talk about adding color to your hair as the seasons change, it's easy to miss another sneaky trend that's been experiencing its renaissance: the absence of hair color becoming a movement across different age groups. "I'm also noticing a lot of women letting their natural gray grow in versus trying to conceal it with hair color, so I think we're going to start to see a lot more of the Pamela Anderson vibe of women accepting aging as a new form of beauty," Puncerelli tells us. Here's to hoping we'll be seeing more of this from now on.

1. '90s-Inspired Long Layers

The first fall haircut you need to know about? Almost every single celeb stylist agrees that it's long, luxurious layers. Take it from Jennifer Korab, a celebrity hairstylist, colorist, and the founder of Renaissance Salon and Spa, who says, "Long layers are one of those haircuts that are always trending and highly requested. After summer, a lot of people want to refresh their hair from any damage but want to keep their length, so this haircut is perfect for the fall. It’s not drastic, but it does enough for a new look because you can keep the length but cut pieces in the front to shape the face, and layers create a voluminous and fuller look."

Celebrity hairstylist Jerome Lordet, owner of Jerome Lordet Salon in NYC, agrees. "For those who love length, fall will bring a return of luxurious, healthy-looking layers. It’s all about keeping length but adding fluidity. Ask your stylist for cascading layers starting below the chin for dimension and bounce."

Sean Michael, owner of Salon Beau, says fans of the '90s supermodel blowout should opt for a slight variation, aka '90s-inspired layers (something Sabrina Carpenter has made her signature). These differ from traditional long layers in that they stack around the crown of the head for more bounce and volume. "Think full, bouncy layers that bring movement and body back into the hair," he says. "It’s flattering on almost every length and works beautifully with a blowout."

Celebrity hairstylist Vanessa Ocando agrees that layers are *it* for fall 2025. She recommends incorporating them into a mid-length haircut for a "graceful" summer-to-fall transition. "This cut channels mid-'90s cool with intentional layers that start near the lip line and taper with purpose," she says. "The layers are soft enough to flip, structured enough to style, and versatile enough to part any way you like, middle, deep side, or wherever it naturally falls.

2. The Back-to-Basics Bob and Lob

Devin Graciano is a professional hairstylist and the CEO of Goldie Locks. She says after a year of hyper-specific bobs—the Italian bob, the French bob, the draped bob, etc.—we'll go back to basics. "The classic bob remains the queen of chic and for good reason. Its incredible versatility is keeping this style on full display this season." Lordet agrees, saying, "It’s chic, versatile, and works beautifully with both straight and wavy textures."

Then, there's the classic lob, or long bob. "A long bob is one of those you see a lot during the fall, especially for people who love to do a big chop after the summer but don’t want super-short hair," Korab says. "For a lob, ask your stylist to cut to your shoulder. You can ask for a blunt cut, which is straight across, or even add in some layers for more movement. Some people also request shorter pieces to frame the face."

Pro tip: Graciano says there's a way to decide whether you should get a bob or a lob. "Hold a pen vertically at your earlobe and another horizontally under the chin to form an L-shaped corner. Mark the point where the two intersect and measure from the earlobe to that mark. Read the result. Two inches or less: short hair is flattering. More than two inches: Medium to long hair will be most balanced."

3. Evolutions of the Shag

Dusty "CurlVision" Schlabach is a curly hair specialist. He says the classic shag look is still as relevant as ever. "Rock and roll is on the rise, and a good shag will put you right in the scene. It goes by the 'wolf cut' these days, too. But really, it's just loads of very high layers, cascading all the way down to the ends. The fringe is critical but must be done right. Don’t look for precision or convenience. You’ll want them loose and in your lash line if you’re going for the hottest version of it."

As for Lordet, he says there's no doubt that "layers are making a strong return," and that includes shag cuts. He says the best shag cuts give "a nod to the '70s" but have a "fresher, softer finish. This cut gives volume and effortless texture, perfect for fall when hair naturally feels drier and needs movement."

Graciano's favorite evolution of the shag is the "butterfly cut," which is slightly different from the wolf cut in that the layers are longer and less blunt. "The butterfly cut is a beautiful evolution of the classic shag," she says. "The butterfly cut is perfect for those who want the airy volume of a shorter cut without sacrificing length. With shorter, face-framing layers on top and longer layers through the back, it creates incredible texture and a stunning profile."

4. Classic Curtain Bangs

Curtain bangs are an elegant, French-girl classic, and Michael says they're not going away anytime soon (at least not before fall 2025). He predicts people will opt for curtain bangs in the coming months, as they give off an effortlessly chic vibe. "Curtain fringe bangs are face-framing bangs parted down the middle and swept to each side, cut shorter in the center and longer toward the temples for a soft, blended look," he says. "Tell your stylist you want bangs that sweep back and blend seamlessly into your layers."

The Top Fall Hair Colors of 2025

1. Decadent Mocha

Calling all brunettes! This season, consider accentuating your color via a "decadent mocha" dye job. Graciano says this color is all about depth and dimension, and you can opt for cool or warm undertones depending on which suits your skin tone best. "A rich mocha shade is stunning and deep, velvety brown with subtle cool or warm undertones that catch the light beautifully," she says. "It feels luxurious and healthy."

Lordet seconds that, saying, "Deep, shiny brunette tones with multidimensional lowlights will dominate. It’s rich, timeless, and complements fall wardrobes beautifully."

2. Cherry Cola

Last year was all about fiery red colors, like "cowboy copper." This year, things are getting deeper and richer with an emphasis on "cherry cola" hair. "Cherry cola has always been popular for the fall, but this year it is very trendy, as you have probably seen on TikTok," Korab says. "The depth of the red can vary depending on a person's preference, but it is usually a red wine color. Some also may do a dark brown with a cherry cola glaze over it, so it is more subtle and usually pops in natural light."

It's essentially a deep, punchy take on traditional auburn. And as Graciano says, "nothing harmonizes with the season quite like a vibrant auburn. It’s a classic fall look that feels both timeless and completely of the moment."
