We've all experienced it: You dedicate time and effort to creating a makeup look that makes you feel confident and attractive, only to witness its untimely demise after you push it to the limit. According to Nguyen, face primers allow for smoother makeup application and help promote the longevity of your makeup when applied correctly. Put simply, you should be applying your primer anywhere you notice your makeup shifting or sliding throughout a day's wear. "You can apply primer to certain areas of your face where the skin tends to be more oily, such as the T-zone, or you can apply it all over your face," explains Nguyen. Who wants to waste your favorite blushes, foundations, and concealers when you can trust they'll stay put with a little help from a great primer?

Face primer is truly the "glue" that holds your entire makeup look together and keeps you from having to reapply products, so knowing when to apply the primer can also affect the final result of your makeup look. Nguyen recommends using face primer only after you apply your favorite moisturizer—think of primer as the base on which you'll build the rest of your makeup on.

Applying the Product

Nguyen's top primer trick for application? Correctly identify what primer will best cater to your skin type. Depending on your skin type, a primer can help reduce or even erase dryness, discoloration, hyperpigmentation, and other pesky imperfections that can alter the look of your complexion. Some primers can also help those with oily skin. Primer is truly a miracle product in that it not only helps create your makeup look but also helps ensure longer wear. As you try different primers, pay special attention to how your primer of choice responds to your makeup lineup. If it's pilling or clumping beneath your base, reconsider your application process (using your hands versus a brush) and the product's formula.

If you told my 14-year-old self I'd one day have the opportunity to speak to the legendary Gwen Stefani (a woman who truly needs no introduction), I probably would have had a minor fainting spell. I'm not kidding when I tell you the playlist of my early teen years consisted solely of Love. Angel. Music. Baby. and every No Doubt song known to man. I've always deeply admired Stefani's creativity, spirit, and ability to stay true to herself throughout her decades-spanning and extremely successful career. First, she started with music, then a clothing line, and now, years later, she has decided to return to her roots and gift us with an awe-inspiring makeup line, GXVE Beauty. 

When I say "return to her roots," some of you may not know that I’m referring to Stefani's early career as a makeup artist. She worked as one at a mall in Anaheim, California before becoming a musician full-time and recalls this time in her life as the spark that fueled her passion for makeup as an art form.

And yes, she's also just as kind, painfully cool, and down-to-earth as you think she is. Hearing her speak about this collection made me feel some type of way. This is a woman who has been on stage and in front of a camera for over 20 years and still manages to speak so honestly about the challenges she faced that brought her to the creation of this collection. It's a cohesive and stunning line I can't wait to get my hands on, and you can tell she put a lot of heart and soul into it. Last but not least, she's finally offering the masses a way to achieve her iconic red lip—and it doesn't cost an arm and a leg, either. Read on for my honest beauty chat with Stefani and discover all of the details on the new launch.

I would first love to first start by talking about the inspiration behind the line. How did this formulate in your mind and how did this come together over the years?

Well, I kind of feel like this has been something that was always going to happen in my lifetime. This is going to be my legacy. This is going to be the give-back chapter of my life. And I prayed about it a lot. I definitely went through a really traumatic time about seven years ago, and really had to pick the pieces up and go, "Who am I, what happened? Like, what do I do next?" God helped me—it was just a whole down on the knees [thing]. And at that point, you know, I had already done a lot—not just the music, but with L.A.M.B. for all those years, Harajuku, fragrance, clothes, I'd also had babies. It was a lot. And you know, I don't really think I need to do anything else in my life. I don't, but I knew that if I didn't do something else, I would feel useless and not be happy because I'm a creative person and I get my thrills from touching people and from making a difference.

So I just sort of had the idea that I wanted to do makeup and it probably came from being the face of L'Oréal for a while and the face of Revlon. [It came from] going back and working with those companies, using their makeup, and then being able to create a palette with Wendy from Urban Decay. That was definitely an eye-opener. It was such a challenge in the way that I had never experienced design like that before. Design, for me, is what I love—that creative process. It's like the process of making cookies and then you actually eating them because I'm making makeup that I know that I'm going to consume myself. It's sort of selfish.

But yeah, that was where it came from. Back when I started, I really just wanted to create a makeup line that I would love and that would be high-quality enough for makeup artists to use and love, too. But through the process which took four years, it really turned into something bigger than that. I want to foster a community of like-minded artistic people who want to express themselves through makeup and share each other's creativity and beauty. 

I really love that! And I just love that you also have a background as a makeup artist—shout-out to Orange County! I went to CSUF there. That's what I think is also so cool about the line. Can you tell me a little bit about your time as a makeup artist in Anaheim and what you learned from that experience?

I think the biggest lesson I learned—or the most I learned—wasn't so much technical because honestly, I worked in a different department and I dreamed of being one of those girls [at the makeup counter]. They were flawless, they were intimidating, and they were above all of us. And not that I wanted to be above anyone, I just wanted to be pretty and look like that, you know? I knew I loved makeup and that I could do it. And I knew I was good at it. So, I asked if I could do it. And they just said "Sure." After working there for quite a while and in Plaza Sportswear, which is an older women's department, they just opened the gate to the island and said "You're going to make a display." They literally didn't teach me one thing. They didn't tell me one thing about the brands. It was like they just needed someone to stand there in case someone might want to buy something, which nobody did because nobody buys those brands at the $1 mall.

So I was on the same island as Clinique, which was basically what people came in to buy because they could afford that. And it just seemed a lot more simple, you know. It wasn't as artistic, it was kind of like a broader thing. So I what I really learned about was that feeling that you can give people through makeup, and I love a makeover. And it wasn't ever about selling products. It was about, "Can you do my makeup because I'm going to be going out tonight, and I want a free sample?" And that was kind of the mall that I worked at. So I just really enjoyed the joy and the hope that people would get afterward. It was literally like a transformation and a temporary place that people could land and go, "Oh, I didn't know I could be this person," or "Oh, that makes me feel like I can go out and conquer the world right now."

And that's really what I think people don't realize about makeup. All those years of being criticized—people saying "She's wearing a mask. What's she trying to hide under there? She's probably this and she's probably that." You think I didn't hear that shit? I heard it loud and clear. And guess what? Yeah. Yeah, I'm wearing a mask of makeup today that looks like this. And tomorrow will be a different one and you're going to enjoy it. Because what we do is we give whatever version of ourselves in the morning that we want to give, and I don't go around looking at myself all day in this makeup. You get to receive this gift that I give you. And that's kind of where the name came in.

There's so much giving when it comes to yourself, like giving yourself the opportunity to have that feeling in the morning and do whatever you need to do. I've done my own makeup on stage my entire life. And I'm still getting better—I'm still learning and that's what I love about it. It's such an incredible community where people aren't scared to be copying each other. And there's no shame in it. I love it. People on TikTok are going, "Look at how gorgeous this girl is." I want to look like that. And I'm going to try it right now. I'm going to celebrate her and show you who she is. Then I'm going to try copying what she did. And you're going to see my version and then you're going to try it. And that's positivity to me—that's joy. That's everything that I want to give back to people in this chapter of my life. So, I know I'm making it sound dramatic. And it's extreme because that's who I am. But I can cry right now talking about it because I care that much. That's my destiny.

I feel like that attitude of passion and purpose really shines through in the collection. And yeah, I have heard that you like to do your own makeup 99% of the time, which I think is so cool. What are a few looks that you just really love creating for yourself?

I love that the process of doing it makes me feel ready. I mean, I go back and forth, because I've been doing it my whole life. And I bet anyone that does makeup does the same thing. I get into one thing (and I do this with clothes too) that I'm obsessed with. Like, my latest thing that I learned from a makeup artist that is literally a master—I don't even understand how someone can be that talented—is how to do my eyebrows, which is my least favorite part. Just to focus on the brow and make that the framework of what you're doing. How dark you want them that day, how fluffy you want them, how sharp you want them, and what shape. And that's something I only learned a couple of months ago. So it's cool—there's so much information out there. It's a moving target, especially the older you get. My skin through the years has been so different, you know? And I've learned tricks that I didn't do before, like putting oil inside [my makeup]. I have an oil that comes with my collection.

I saw that and I was so excited because I wasn't sure if there was going to be skin prep in the mix. And I was like, "Oh my god, she included an oil. That's so cool!"

I want to do everything and skincare makes me nervous! It's going to be very, very hard. It's the time that it takes, the amount of testing and trials, and formulations. It's a really in-depth design process, which I really really enjoy. And everyone's using these layers of primers and I'm like, "That is ridiculous. Who (especially an old person) would put all that on their face?" [There was this] oil inside my [previous] makeup and I just started noticing there was something really nice about being a little more reflective, and dewy, and shiny in certain places on your face and not wearing so much foundation. So I said I would love to be able to [create something] as good as that oil if I could. And I beat that shit. Like, I'm not even kidding. I didn't think it was possible because [some] skincare [feels like] a lot of fraud. Do you know what I mean? It's a lot of branding. It's a lot of 'This will make you look like you don't have wrinkles,' and I don't believe any of that. That's just not true. And we know that that's not true. What is true is that makeup can transform your face if you have good makeup and you learn how to put it on right, which anybody can—you just have to practice.

Not everything's for everyone, you know? We're all different, we don't wear the same colors, and we're not the same color. We're not the same skin type and we have different features. So, what I tried to create with the first collection are the signature things that I think people would identify me with. You can never have too much makeup! The better you get at makeup, the more you want. And so, you know, everyone says, "Oh, another celebrity makeup line" or whatever. Well, yeah, who cares? It doesn't matter. If you love makeup, you can never have enough. It's so true. Whether you fall in love with one thing, and then they take it away and you have to find a replacement, or you fall in love with something you didn't think you would like and now that's your new favorite. I do think that I have signature looks that I do all the time, which is a cat-eye, a brow, and a lip. This collection has those things in it. So I started there, but there's going to be so much more.

That brings me to the question that I absolutely have to ask. Obviously, everybody knows you for your iconic red lip. How did that play into the creation of the new lipsticks?

Well, I know what I used my whole life and know that you don't just use one kind of formulation for everything. When I had babies, it had to be different. You can't wear [something like] Anaheim Shine [with a toddler]. If you have a toddler, you don't because they would swipe it and it would be everywhere. But a formulation like Anaheim Shine is grippy, has that shine, it doesn't bleed, and it's not going to slip around. And when you eat, it can stay. It is an amazing luxurious formula. I really had a hard time because I was trying to beat something that I wore my whole life. I thought, "Do I go with the one that I think is a little more normal? Or do I go with this one?" And I just went for this one, there's no denying it. This formula is so amazing.

So that's for when you want to have more shiny lips and you like that comfort of being able to put your lips together. These formulas are also going to come in so many colors. I mean, we started with red because that's obvious. I mean, it's the color of love, we needed to start with red. And so I think that with that formula, it's the shine and then with Original Me, that would be my typical, I love a matte lipstick. I love the way it looks, I think it looks retro. It's kind of what I've always worn. It's safe, there's not a lot of movement, you can eat [in it], and it lasts a long time.

I keep shouting myself out, but I did what I was trying to do on this one which is [create] more comfort with matte lipstick. [Normally], it can be so dry for stage and stuff like that. You wouldn't believe what I would go through with the dryness, but it was what I had to do. If it hits the microphone, or my hair gets in it, it's a wrap. You don't have a mirror on stage and you're up there for two hours sweating. So what I love about this is that it's still matte, but it never dries. It always feels like it's still comfortable. I'm really getting into the formulas here [laughs]. It's fun, but this formula is really is great. I'm wearing it right now.

The other formula which is really interesting is the I'm Still Here Longwear Lipstick. Typically, [longwear lipsticks] are so uncomfortable. I mean, you have to suffer. They do a good job and they don't come off, but this one is such a light formulation. I don't know if you tried it yet, but it's the lightest one I've ever used. I wore it on stage just last Wednesday when I was in Aspen and it performed really well. It was only an hour up there, it's pigmented but it doesn't feel uncomfortable. If I had to choose one, I would just go with this as my favorite for all-day wear right now. Anyway, I know I'm going to change my mind.

While everyone was busy with their BBQs and pool parties over the Fourth of July weekend, Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton went off and got married. Congratulations to the newlyweds! Stefani confirmed the news on Instagram on Monday evening, first with a cute video and later with a series of images from their big day.

The couple got married on Saturday, July 3, at Shelton's ranch in Oklahoma. Stefani wore a custom Vera Wang wedding dress along with some unique, statement-making accessories: white leather Le Silla boots embellished with Swarovski crystals and fishnet tights. Her veil was embroidered with the names Blake and Gwen alongside the names of Stefani's three sons, Kingston, Zuma, and Apollo. How sweet is that?

You might think Instagram sparked the golden age of manicures. But looking back, it turns out the early aughts walked so the 2010s could run. The new millennium started out with some late-’90s mall relics like frosted polish and French manicures but became more adventurous as time went on when Chanel’s gone-but-never-forgotten Black Satin polish hit the scene. And things just got more over-the-top from there.

But like so many other nostalgic fashion and beauty trends, we suddenly want to wear them all over again. In fact, the biggest nail trends of 2021 are remarkably similar to those that took over 2001. To prove it, we’re taking a walk down manicure memory lane with Brittney Boyce, celebrity nail artist and founder of Nails of LA, and including ways to re-create the looks right this second. Best of all, the polishes and products of this decade are much healthier for our nails and a little more, well, polished overall.

The French manicure was the go-to for celebs like Jennifer Lopez but then faded into obscurity. "For a long time, white tips were almost forbidden and seen as dated and tacky,” says Boyce. "But with almond or round shaped nails, it looks really updated and classic. It’s back to the original intent of the look, which is to accentuate the look of a natural nail for film, runways, and photos by elongating the look of your hands.”

This Y2K-era trend, seen here on Mya, gives us all the feels. "Frosted nail polish is very easy to do when you’re busy and don’t have time for extensive nail art. I love the jewel tones,” says Boyce, adding that the trend "looks better on short, natural nails.”

In the early aughts, long acrylics were a celebrity favorite, with everyone from Missy Elliott to Pink wearing the look. And although natural, short nails had their moment in the 2010s, longer nails have had a resurgence in the last five years or so. "I’ve never been a big fan of acrylic, as it’s harsh on the nail, but I am a big fan of gel extensions, which is the modern way of achieving length without damaging your nail,” says Boyce. "I think good nail extensions look super sick!"

The punk staple went mainstream after Chanel Black Satin became the It nail color, and everyone from Jessica Simpson to Lauren Conrad wore the shade. 

Kimora Lee Simmons’s flip phone may be totally 2000s, but her nail color will never be out of style. "I did a hot pink recently for Megan Fox for the iHeartRadio Awards, and it was really fun,” says Boyce.

If you spent algebra painting Wite-Out onto your nails, you found your next mani shade. "White nail polish looks really great in the summer,” says the nail pro. "I also like using the white base as a canvas for nail art.”

The nail-art bubble may have burst in the last decade, but it’s been around forever. Fergie showed off this entry-level take back in 2005. "I always love minimalistic graphic nail art. It’s like modern art meets nails,” says Boyce. "In 2021, I think a graphic nail looks great with color-blocking.”

Gwen Stefani’s vintage-inspired phase brought lots of red lipstick and nails. "I think classic red will never go out of style,” says Boyce.

From cell phones to sunglasses, "bedazzling everything was really big in the 2000s,” Boyce reminds us. The wearer of this crystal-embedded manicure? None other than Serena Williams, who is a certified nail technician(!).

"The reverse French with clear tips started coming into the scene in the early 2000s, and it’s one of my most requested looks nowadays,” says Boyce of looks like Christina Aguilera’s. "But now we amp up the clear tips more by using a thin metallic shade to show the separation.” 

And now: The 20 Best-Selling OPI Nail Colors of All Time—That You Can Still Buy

After several years of all things ’90s retaking fashion and beauty trends, it seems a natural progression that the 2000s followed suit. But if the ’90s were known for sleek, minimalist looks, the decade after them was known for just the opposite. "Hair in the 2000s was wild because everyone was trying to do something a little different that no one had seen before,” says celebrity hairstylist and Color Wow artistic director Joseph Maine. "There were really no limits and people were experimenting with different textures and accessories. It was a playful time for style.” And playful is right. From dramatic hair colors to iconic (and unique) haircuts, hair in the early aughts was in a beauty league of its own.

Although some of today’s fashion icons like Bella Hadid and Megan Thee Stallion are no doubt inspired by this time in fashion and beauty history, it’s evident that some styles may stay firmly in the past. Lopez famously topped off her braided hairstyle at the 2000 MTV VMAs with a white bedazzled bandana that matched her outfit.

Berry’s is arguably one of the all-time great short haircuts from any era. "That pixie cut will really never go out of style, especially if you have the bone structure that Halle does,” says Maine. 

Good news for Kelly: Her two-tone hair color is making its way back again, with celebs like J.Lo and Dua Lipa wearing the look recently. 

Good news if you still love Avril’s slick-straight look. "Straight, glossy hair really never goes out of style,” says Maine, who recommends using a smoothing treatment like Color Wow Dream Coat ($30) "to give thermal protection and add a ton of shine.”

The late singer-actress was ahead of every trend she wore, from her ombré hair color to her deep side part—a look that dominated the decade (sorry, Gen Z).

"This was an iconic hairstyle that was rarely replicated well,” says Maine of Aguilera’s multitonal look. "The sort of preciseness and choppiness of the cut and extensions helped give this a bit of edge.”

The crimper may have peaked in the ’80s, but it held on through the early aughts as evidenced by Tyra (and her smize).

Brandy’s contributions to millennium-era prom styles can’t be overstated. Case in point: This gorgeous upswept braid bun, which would have looked perfect for the occasion.

She flirted with pink, blue, and even brunette, but Gwen’s bleach blonde was one of the most iconic hair colors of the time (it even caught the attention of Martin Scorcese, who gave her the role of Jean Harlow in The Aviator). 

The rapper made her signature short haircut even more of a statement look by dyeing it shades like lavender and red to match her red carpet looks.

Blame LiLo for all our questionable side bangs circa 2003. Maine says it’s actually a great transition style: "I think side bangs are on the horizon with so many girls cutting curtain bangs recently,” predicts the hairstylist, adding that "The best way to grow them is by blending them into a bit of a side bang.”

Mischa’s O.C.-era waves would make Marissa Cooper proud. "This wavy texture is back in full force,” says Maine. "The best way to modernize this a bit is by using a waver with a [barrel] slightly larger than what Mischa used.”

Ah, the '90s. An era defined by MTV, Lisa Frank, and more boy bands than we care to count. (For the record, I think 98 Degrees was underrated.) Some of my absolute favorite pop culture moments were born in this decade, and when I think back on it, I can't help but relish in the wonderfully wild '90s hairstyles.

From messy buns to chic claw clips to a broad selection of bangs, there was something special about the hair trends from this time. It girls of the era, such as Britney Spears, Janet Jackson, and Gwen Stefani, served up enough inspiration to carry us right into the following decade. "There was a big divide between clean, layered glam and edgy, rebellious looks," says Giles Robinson, celebrity hairstylist for Color Wow. "It was the decade where hair was part of your identity, expressive, individual, and tied to music, fashion, and film."

If you're as nostalgic as I am, then you'll love this roundup of the 20 most quintessentially '90s hairstyles we would low-key wear today. I might get some strange looks, but I'll never shy away from an adventurous beauty look. Keep reading for our favorites.

1. The Twist-Back

The only thing that could make this style more '90s is a butterfly clip placed at the end of the twisted section. This half-rolled hairstyle, also dubbed "picture-day hair" by the elementary school set, ruled the decade.

2. The Winona Pixie

The subtle layers and laid-back styling made this pixie cut an instant hit when Winona Ryder debuted it in the late '90s. "In the ‘90s, styles were often a bit more literal, chunkier highlights, spikier updos, harsher partings," says Robinson. "These days, we’re revisiting the same trends but softening them."

3. Micro Braids

No one rocked micro braids quite like Brandy. This was her signature hairstyle on her hit TV show Moesha as well as in her real life. Plus, the length of this look perfectly frames her face.

4. Bumped Bob

The soft curl added to this classic bob adds an interesting element to the hairstyle. Shown here on an angelic-looking Angelina Jolie, this spin on the bob would make us do a double take if we saw it walking down the street today.

5. Mall Bangs

There was a period of time when it seemed like every TV character was sporting these voluminous, feathered bangs. From D.J. Tanner to Kelly Bundy and, of course, Tiffani Thiessen's Saved by the Bell character, Kelly Kapowski, these bangs were the mark of a cool girl.

6. Claw Bangs

On the other end of the bang spectrum were these fringe bangs, defined by face-framing, peekaboo pieces.

7. Teeny Double Dutch Pigtails

This easy hairstyle screams the '90s. Britney Spears fashioned her short hair into two messy plaits fastened on the ends with elastics and just enough hair peeking out of the bottoms for a playful 'do.

8. The Flip

From the pencil-thin eyebrows to the dark-red lipstick and the leopard-print collar, this photo of our queen Drew Barrymore is like a time capsule into the '90s. Her flipped hair (and those enamel hair clips) is another huge clue as to which decade we're looking at.

9. Bedazzled Bandanas

Okay, so in all fairness, this photo was taken in the year 2000. But it's important to call out here because it exemplifies the influence that '90s hip-hop had on style and culture well into the decade that followed. J.Lo's bedazzled bandana accentuating her braided hairstyle.

10. Jumbo Box Braids

Janet Jackson's braids circa Poetic Justice were (and still are) a legendary look. The addition of this newsboy cap and bold red lip solidifies it as one of our favorite looks of hers.

11. Butterfly Clips

Gwen Stefani wasn't afraid to push the envelope when it came to hair. But here, we see her adopting a trend that took hold of just about every '90s girl: the infamous butterfly clip. It was such a thing.

12. Shortest-Possible Platinum Pixie

Jada Pinkett Smith showed us plenty of short haircuts in the '90s, but this bleach-blonde, barely there cut takes the cake.

13. The Hilary Banks

Everything about The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air is a perfect representation of '90s life, but nothing compares to Hilary Banks's perfectly coiled coif, which she'd often top with a statement hat or oversize bow to tie her ensemble together.

14. Messy Bun + Wispy Tendrils 

Don't be fooled by the name: The messy bun could be a super-chic look. Paltrow proved this point on a '90s red carpet, where she kept with the undone theme by letting some face-framing curls hang loose.

15. The Rachel

Do we even need to explain? The power friends and Rachel's character truly sparked a movement for short bobs. "The '90s were all about statement hair, from polished supermodel blowouts to grungy, undone texture," says Robinson. "You had the 'Rachel' cut dominating salon requests alongside sleek high ponytails, butterfly clips, and ultra-straight strands thanks to the rise of flat irons."

16. The Sky-High Pony

Leave it to supermodel Tyra Banks to claim even more height with this sleek high pony. The flipped curl and swooshed bang add that much more '90s flair.

17. Antennae

Nineties girls like Jennifer Love Hewitt were all about an undone look, as evidenced by the trend of leaving just two straight strands of hair out in the front of an otherwise polished style.

18. Two Braids

In an era marked by plenty of grungier styles, this almost childlike style really stood out. Note the clipped bangs as well.

19. Chunky Highlights

Apparently subtlety just wasn't in style in the '90s. Kelly Rowland's lurid streaks, coupled with her choppy cut, were clearly meant to stand out. "Music videos and red carpet appearances influenced styles massively, from Destiny’s Child's sleek looks to TLC’s playful textures," says Robinson. "These hairstyles worked because they had personality. They were bold, fun, and easy to replicate at home with a bit of gel, mousse, or a heat tool."

20. Scrunchies

Scrunchie madness was such a defining trend of the '90s. They were perfect for securing any kind of ponytail or even just wearing around one's wrist like a bracelet. You know, just in case.

We find people typically fall into one of two camps: those who can remember playing Tragic Kingdom ad nauseam when the album was released in 1995, and those who weren’t born yet. What to wear? This predicament is greatly heightened when the occasion in mind is your wedding day. Fashion editors are not immune to the bridal pressure cooker either; if anything, it adds more gravity to people’s expectations. The lead-up to my wedding involved the usual whirlwind of questions facing a newly engaged woman: What dress would I go for? How would I wear my hair? Which designer would I choose? The hunt was on for the dream dress but it just didn’t go as well as I’d hoped.

Being curvy, tall and a lover of carbs, I couldn’t imagine myself in something slinky, nor did I want to go down the meringue route. I made multiple appointments to try on wedding gowns but my heart didn’t flutter. Quite the contrary, I felt doomed to look like an avalanche of crêpe de chine. I just couldn’t find a 360-degree fit for my shape that oozed my style. As options narrowed and lunch breaks were filled up with snow flurries of manic dress searches, I called it quits on bridal pret-à-porter. The dress just didn’t exist. Yet.

The haute pursuit begins! If something is classed as couture, then it means that a piece is made-to-measure for your body. You can choose a designer dress from a collection and have it fitted exclusively to your shape. Wonderful, but what if you want to go one step further and design your own garment? One could save up £200,000 and hit the marble halls of Paris where an exclusive design is made for you from one of the prestigious haute couture fashion houses, but considering there's a minority of regular global customers, this is unlikely for most.

If you don't own a yacht or have six digits to spare, then fear not, another option is available. You could find a British-based dress designer costume designer who can make a gown especially for you. Some call it design couture—a process that includes a toile of your body, an exclusive design, a garment made in-house, and personal fittings to underscore the design process. Bridal-designers-cum-courtiers are like gold dust because only a select few fashion houses make one-of-kind gowns; the industries main focus is on ready-to-wear. I found the right one via recommendations from friends at Brides magazine, but some determined Google searches would unearth your local options.

Who What Wear UK: There’s so much to organize for a wedding day. How important is it to share information about the event planning with the dress designer?

Anita Massarella: It’s very helpful to know as much as possible. I like to get a background of the bride’s wedding vision, and if there’s a storyboard or Pinterest link to ideas then that helps me to get a sense of the couple’s personality.

WWW UK: What questions do you often ask the bride about the wedding plans?

AM: Is the day going to be formal or more relaxed? In a grand venue or outdoors? Home or abroad? Even if the bride is still forming a plan for her big day, it’s helpful to know the wider context so that together we can create a suitable design for the season. As soon as the colour theme for the venue is decided, it’s important to inform your dress designer so that it can be reflected in little flourishes on the garment, if at all.

WWW UK: It’s hard to know what credentials to look out for in a fashion house or dressmaker. How do you identify where to go?

AM: If you cannot find what you want in ready-to-wear (i.e. off-the-peg collections) then having something designed uniquely for you is a great option. Enquire if the designer can offer exclusive designs or to what extent they customise dresses. We create one-of-a-kind couture dresses but not all places do. It's also okay to ask how many years of experience the designer has. Do read the client testimonials on their social media and website; it’s clear when a brand has a good reputation. You ideally want a team that can deliver the entire package: create an exclusive design to suit you, produce the dress pattern, make the dress in-house and provide the professional fittings.

On Kate Moss: John Galliano Haute Couture veil.

WWW UK: Where do most of your brides get their dress ideas from?

AM: Mainly Instagram, Pinterest or cut-outs from society events in the back of Vogue, Tatler etc. I’ve noticed that when people look at photos from formal events, like polo or Ascot, then it’s easier to see a range of different clothing designs worn by real people with varying figures. It can be less daunting than looking at models.

WWW UK: Once you’ve found the right person to collaborate with and to make your dress, what’s the best way to kick-start the design process?

AM: You don’t need to know the fabric or design terminology, a good designer can interpret what you want by the way you describe what you like. For example, an experienced designer will be able to tell from a photo if the bride wants something soft, bias-cut and clings to the body, and billowing chiffon coming from the back of it, or if the structure of the dress needs to boned, corseted, stiff dress etc.

WWW UK: There are so many different fabrics to choose from. How do you pick the right one?

AM: Identify how you would like your dress to move and sit on your body. If you want it to sway and flow, then chiffon is perfect for that. If you want a stiff dress then gabardine holds its shape; but this where the designer's expertise comes in. Just remember that the style of the dress needs to work with the choice of fabric.

WWW UK: How do you get ideas into one cohesive design?

AM: Begin with an outline of a body sketched on a piece of paper. Drawing out ideas is a great starting point. I tend to go step-by-step from talking about what neckline would suit the client to the favoured sleeve length, how it fits the waist etc. At each stage, you need to consider how the design works as a whole and how to keep it all in proportion with your shape.

WWW UK: When the design is agreed, what’s the next step?

AM: The next stage is finalising which fabrics will be used in the lining, for the main body of the dress. This process involves looking at lots of fabric samples with your designer and exploring which shades suit your complexion. I go as far as including the bride in choosing the very buttons and hand-picking the beads that will be sewn on! You can decide which beads, what colours, what shade, what size! If you’re making a dress from scratch, you can even cherry-pick embellishments or fabrics that suit the shade of your eyes.

WWW UK: How can a bride get the most out of dress fittings?

AM: Wear a really good fitting bra, and the heels that you are going to wear on the day (or of a similar height) because that will affect your posture. A good designer will offer you the opportunity to make adjustments at your fitting. Do take the opportunity to amend the design slightly or be more bold with decisions, like lowering a neckline slightly or exaggerating the silhouette of the dress by asking for the fabric to be nipped in a little.

WWW UK: On a second fitting, is it a good idea to bring the extra outfit details?

AM: Absolutely! The second fitting is where you can road test all of the elements of your look to see what works. If you’re having a hair trial then come in for a fitting with the hair and makeup trial. It’s also a good chance to try out the veil to make sure all the final pieces come together. If you are having a tryout for your bouquet, bring it in at this point. Then you can check that everything is perfect. Don’t be afraid to point out details that you want to be tweaked. And when you have your final fitting, do bring a bottle of chilled champagne and your best friend and/or your mother to soak in the fun of it all!
