Summer is here, and one of my favorite things to do as a fashion editor is keep up-to-date on the latest arrivals from the buzziest brands. Lately, I've been loving all the pretty styles from the summer-friendly clothing drops across the internet. In particular, I've been seeing seriously cool pieces from Good American. Personally, I've paid way too much for jeans that either pinch, squeeze, or suffocate me without flattering my figure or making me feel secure. While I've had my fair share of run-ins with luxury jeans over the years of being an editor, I have to admit that sometimes the jeans I constantly gravitate toward are some of the cheapest.

From a shopping perspective, March is most definitely my favourite time of year. Yes, it's still pretty chilly out, but the shops have started to receive their new spring 2023 collections meaning heavy knits and dark winter coats are being switched out for more uplifting colour palettes, new-season footwear and lots and lots of denim. It’s also the first time we get a teaser for the warmer months ahead and start to believe that we won’t really be stuck in the deepest darkest depths of winter forever... Dramatic, me? Never!

When it comes to shopping, I think its always important to buy pieces that you love and make you feel good, instead of purely focusing on what is in fashion right now. However, I’ve put together a little run down of the key trends for spring 2023 that are already available to buy in high-street stores, so you can keep an eye out when browsing and maybe use as inspiration for new-season dressing. There are always so many iterations of each trend, making it super easy to find something that suits your style.

If you’ve had a chance to read our Spring/Summer 2023 trend report, then you will already know that there is a return to Y2K trends such as denim maxi skirts, cargo pants and grunge, all given a much welcomed grown-up and wearable spin. And whilst this is a key focus for many designers, there is also a host of more delicate, pretty pieces such as ballet skirts, 3D florals, and lingerie-inspired bralets and lace take centre stage this spring. If walking down the street in your bra with a sheer skirt sounds a little OTT for you, rest assured that these are all done in such a way that you could easily incorporate them into your everyday wardrobe.

So, I headed out this week to see what has already landed in store and found my 8 favourite trends you can buy into right now. 

1. Polished grunge

Style Notes: March is the typical time you'll see trench coats in stores as it is a really easy transitional coverup to take you through to spring, however, grunge is back and this faux-leather trench coat from Zara is a really simple (and wearable) way to buy into the trend, but still feels timeless and polished.

2. Boudoir Detailing 

Style Notes: Underwear detailing and corsetry were key details on the catwalk for spring 2023 and Mango has just dropped its new Selection range which features elevated pieces that fit the bill and will feel special in your wardrobe. Case in point, this bodice dress in a soft shade of mint green. It looks way beyond its high-street price tag and would be perfect for spring weddings and other special events. Styling a strapless midi dress over a shirt like this is not only a key look for spring but shows just how versatile a piece like this can be.

3. Destination Denim

Style Notes: Unless you have been living under a rock (or not reading your Who What Wear newsletters) you will know that denim is huge for Spring. I don't actually recall a season when there was so much denim on offer across all price brackets. In my last story I said if you buy one piece of denim this season make it a denim skirt and I stand by it. If a maxi skirt feels like too much of a statement then why not try out this wrap skirt from Zara. It ticks a multitude of trends thanks to the utility pockets and a less structured shape, but is such a wearable piece.

4. Head-turning texture 

Style Notes: From fringing to sequins and metallic finishes designers have been heavily influenced by how visible their clothes are when photographed on social media of late. This resonates across the board from more statement dresses to everyday pieces such as knitwear. It might also be due to our continued love affair with cream bouclé and monochromatic looks that continue to fill our IG feed, that has meant more textured knitwear is here to stay. H&M are pretty good at quality knitwear, whether you invest in their more classic cashmere pieces or try out their more trend-led items like this cream co-ord. It is most certainly a really great trans-seasonal piece that will keep you cosy on a chilly day and balance out a bare ankle.

5. Modern Utility

Style Notes: It all started with the Frankie Shop cargo trousers and skirts last autumn and for spring 2023 designers from Miu Miu to Louis Vuitton have cemented this trend as one of the most sought-after for the season ahead. What is so great about the utility trend is you can be as adventurous with it as you like, with subtle pieces like this satin bomber from Good American or more OTT pieces like this a-line mini skirt from Anthropologie.

6. Sheer Notes

Style Notes: Sheer fabrics and details are huge for spring and are a more intriguing way to amp up a look. Forget mini hemlines and plunging necklines, layering a more revealing slip underneath a sheer top or skirt like this piece from Arket will show more confidence and maturity in your styling. And it just so happens that balletic influences were seen all over the catwalk, with full skirts making a return, which means this skirt is ticking all the boxes for SS23.

7. Y2K Revisted

Style Notes: Bershka is known as one of Inditex's (the Spanish parent group of Zara, Massimo Dutti etc) younger brands, so it's not somewhere I shop from that frequently. That said, their store displays always catch my eye, hence why I tried on these cargo pants and shirt. This is by far one of my absolute favourite looks for spring. The denim cargos had a really nice volume and weight to them (something you only tend to see with a higher price tag) and the shirt was reminiscent of some of my favourite tops from the noughties.

8. Home-spun weaves 

Style Notes: Despite the season, knitwear featured heavily on the catwalk this spring but in more playful colours and textures. Spider weaves and jumbo fishnets are something to keep an eye out for as we move further into spring, but already brands like Kitri (which you will find on the high street but at a slightly higher price point) have made crochet weaves a key part of their new season collection. As you can see by how I've styled this skirt, it most definitely doesn't have to been a trend that is restricted to beach holidays and festivals!

The Jenner sisters are back to their usual Aspen antics it seems. Less than a year after Kendall Jenner broke the internet when she posed in the snow in nothing but a black string bikini and Miu Miu's F/W 21 faux fur boots while vacationing in Aspen, her little sister debuted an almost identical look in the same ski town, where the duo is currently vacationing (and having plenty of fun, as documented on Kendall's TikTok).

I was (fashionably) late to the jeans party. My first foray into pants was experimenting with my mom’s old stirrup leggings, but beyond that, dresses and skirts were strictly my jam. Anything with separate legs felt restrictive and as far as hemlines were concerned, the shorter the better. 

That all changed when I discovered vintage in high school. Turned on to the "joy of the hunt” by a friend, I became obsessed with the adrenaline rush of discovering one-of-a-kind pieces. My previous grievances against pants were quickly forgotten when I fell for a pair of perfectly worn-in Levi’s. This was holy grail denim: buttery soft, slightly androgynous, and in the most perfect sky blue wash. I was hooked, and my repertoire expanded quickly: frayed cutoffs in lieu of miniskirts, indigo bootcut jeans over slip dresses. My sweaters were set aside in favor of oversized, distressed denim jackets. I’d turned into a true blue-jean baby. 

Denim still factors heavily in my closet. I’m in jeans almost every day. Recently, I crossed over to the dark side. Black jeans create a totally different look, and I was keen to switch things up. Revamping my denim drawer made me feel like I was in high school again, chasing a high through different cuts and washes. If you’ve recently fallen into a denim rut, read on to revitalize your black denim spark.

The perfect travel day outfit. The high crew neck is cozy and less restrictive than a turtleneck while a wide-leg faded jean is instantly more interesting than leggings or skinny jeans. Sneakers and a cute claw clip will keep you zipping through TSA to pre-board. 

A foolproof everyday look. Layering a colorful cardi will brighten even the grayest day. Straight-leg rigid denim is a subtle homage to the '90s, and patent leather lug soled boots are functional while staying on-trend.

Your to-do list is longer than a CVS receipt, and you need your getup to look as sharper than you feel. Keep it simple with a blazer-and-tee combo, then add some interesting texture with an over-the-shoulder striped sweater.

Date night on the books? A lace-edged cami and sky-high strappy stilettos add sex appeal, while baggy cropped jeans anchor the look. Top it all off with a delicate gold chain to highlight that collarbone.

Emma Grede knows good jeans. Growing up with a love for denim and a passion for accelerating inclusivity, she broke away from her traditional career path to make sure that every woman could know what the perfect fit feels like. Somehow, Grede has managed to balance motherhood and major leadership roles at multiple companies that have certainly already made their way into your closet. Most notably, she is the co-founder and CEO of Good American, she serves as a co-founder of Safely, and she is a founding partner of Skims. And while it may look like she does it all, she surprisingly tells us that isn't exactly the case. This just might be the key to her success.

Read on to hear Grede's story of how she was able to find success in the fashion industry. And of course, she doesn't leave us without a few denim tips to take in along the way. Prepare to leave this article motivated to find your own beat and prepared to shop for denim that was made to fit your body. 

As a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?

I always knew I wanted to work in fashion from a very young age. I grew up in the not-so-glamorous part of East London and would save every little penny so that I could buy fashion magazines. I was captivated by fashion designers and styling. That world was so alluring to me—I'd spend hours collecting magazine ads from Chanel, Versace, and other iconic brands, which really got me into the industry, and ultimately wanted a career that was in and around fashion. 

How did you go from that dream of yours to your career today as the CEO and co-founder of Good American among your other entrepreneurial pursuits? 

I started out in entertainment marketing and then went on to found and serve as CEO and chairwoman of ITB Worldwide. Through that experience, I quickly learned the power of forging partnerships with high-fashion talent to accelerate a brand's exposure and strengthen its credibility. 

When coming up with the idea for Good American, I was pregnant with my daughter and knew that I wanted to start my own company that was built on strong values of inclusivity and was something both my future daughter and I could feel really proud of.

When I started thinking about what that business would look like, it became clear to me that there were so many women who were being completely ignored in the fashion industry, and I knew I wanted to create a brand that bridged the gap. Good American originated from a conversation I had with my now co-founder Khloé Kardashian about what it means to be a woman today and how we can use our brand to empower all women.

In 2016, we built Good American as the first fully inclusive fashion brand. What started as the largest denim launch in history—reaching one million dollars in sales on day one—has now grown into a multi-category brand with double-digit growth in 2021. Since its launch, we've continued to rewrite the rules of size inclusivity and representation, from designing fashion-forward denim, essentials, swim, and shoes in all sizes and styles to inventing a completely new denim size, size 15. We've truly remained steadfastly committed to transforming fashion to be more inclusive.

In addition to Good American, I'm also a founding partner of Skims and a co-founder of Safely. It's taken so much work and dedication to build these businesses, but I'm thrilled with the growth we've seen and the impact all three have had on their respective industries. I approach all my business endeavors and companies with the same passion, focus, and drive to change aspects of each industry my companies touch for the better.

At this point in my career, I've chosen to be very involved and immersed in philanthropic work rooted in social impact, serving as chairwoman of the Fifteen Percent Pledge, a nonprofit very close to my heart that encourages retailers to pledge at least 15% of their shelves to Black-owned businesses. I also sit on the board of both Baby2Baby and Women for Women.

What advice would you give your younger self?

My superpower is my gut instinct. I rely on it, day in and day out. I definitely made a lot of mistakes in the past and wasted a lot of energy because I didn't have as much confidence, so I would tell my younger self to trust my gut. 

The other piece of advice that I'd share is one that I learned from my husband: make a decision and move on. It's inevitable that we are all going to make good decisions and bad decisions. It's important that you make an informed one and continue to learn and grow from all of them. 

Balancing motherhood and running multiple businesses sounds like a lot to juggle. What's your secret to staying in touch with yourself and being organized?

I'll be the first to admit it is a lot to juggle, and there's no such thing as truly balancing it all. It's a trade-off between all of my roles as a CEO, co-founder, mother, and wife. I don't believe in having it all, all the time, and I try to be a bit easy on myself. I don't expect it all to work out all the time, and I think that's okay. I also could not (and do not) do this alone! I have a wonderful team that supports me along the way. There's no shame in admitting I have support. It really takes a village. 

What's one thing that most people don't do that can really help you get ahead in your career?

Project confidence and remember to leave your ego at the door. Whether you're pitching an investor or leading a company meeting, it's so important to believe you're on the same playing field as everyone else in the room in order to share your opinions in the strongest way and make good decisions. I often get asked whether I ever feel "imposter syndrome," and surprisingly, I don't! It's so important to trust yourself and believe there's a reason and purpose for you to be where you are and find success.

Now, let's talk denim.

What's your "never fails" denim style?

Denim is an everyday staple for me. I love our loose straight-leg styles—like Good Vintage and Good Icon—that provide the perfect fit and unparalleled conformability while still making me feel polished as I go about my day-to-day meetings. 

Did denim play a role in your childhood?

I'm the eldest of three sisters, so there was always denim flying around our house. As teens, my sisters and I would trade among ourselves to see what brands and styles we liked. We'd swap bootcut, flare, skinny, acid wash… You name it. We all quickly realized the power of the perfect pair of jeans, ones that hugged us just right and made us feel invincible. We also quickly realized, to no surprise, that the same pair of jeans was not likely to fit all four of us. Either, the length was off, the waist didn't fit right, or the style just didn't fit all our personalities. Looking back, I think this influenced Good American's foundational approach to denim in wanting women to find that perfect pair of jeans that makes them feel confident and empowered, regardless of their size. 

If you had to choose one pair of jeans to pack in your suitcase, which would it be?

I absolutely love our Good Icon jeans! I bring them with me everywhere. They are the flawless fit and so versatile—perfect for a day at the office, dinner with friends, etc. 

What's your favorite wardrobe staple to style jeans with?

I love to pair classic blue jeans with a white or black tee and staple shoes. It's my go-to uniform for everything! From errands to business lunches, this look has you covered.

What tips do you have for finding the best jeans for your body type?

Each body is different, and even then, the same body can differ from day to day. What's important—and a struggle for many women—is finding the perfect pair of jeans. That's why at Good American we created an array of denim collections to accommodate different bodies and desired looks for women, including our Good Legs, Good Waist, Good Curve, and more!

Three tips I have for finding the best jeans for your body type would be to first note what part(s) of your body you'd like to accentuate (your legs, your hips). The right pair of jeans can be your best friend. The second would be to do a bit of research. We aim to make the denim experience as seamless as possible at Good American, but it's still fun to peruse and play around with different styles, washes, etc. Finally, know and shop your size. We similarly make it easy to find your size because there is nothing worse than jeans that are too big or too small. Fit can be everything when it comes to denim. 

What's the one mistake you'll never make again while shopping for denim?

Not taking risks! I've learned to play around with my denim choices and explore styles, colors, and details outside of my comfort zone. It's easy to get stuck in a rut of buying the same denim over and over, so I've been pushing myself to have fun with my choices, like by wearing a pair of crystal-dusted jeans (a look I've been trying out lately). I've also learned to be open to styles I originally thought may not fit my body but instead became looks I loved. We have this really amazing tool on Good American's website that allows you to choose a model that best represents your size so you can see how a style would look on your body type. It makes the shopping experience so much easier, and it's hard for me to shop online without it! You never know what might flatter your shape and how it might look, so I'd say be open to the possibilities.

Last month, I tapped a celebrity stylist to let me in on a Hollywood style secret. I asked her which denim brands celebs actually buy for themselves, as opposed to pieces that are gifted or chosen by stylists. For this story, I wanted to continue the theme and find out which leggings reign supreme, so I did a ton of my own research and came up with five brands that celebrities love to wear while off duty.

It's taken the fashion industry a long time to take steps towards size inclusivity. For an industry full of creativity, that's one area that's been quite slow to evolve. This has left many people with a lack of options, most of the time forcing them to choose less stylish pieces than they'd like. While many brands still haven't taken those steps, there are many new and existing brands that have started championing inclusive sizing with high-quality, on-trend style offerings in recent years.

Confession time: For an industry that’s so creative, I’m always a little dismayed by the lack of inclusive-sizing. Sure, there are designers that are revolutionizing sizing with the industry, and more recently, 11 Honoré launched its high-end private label catered to creating clothing for women of all sizes, but when it comes to creating plus-size clothing at all price ranges, the industry still has some work to do. As if it weren’t already hard enough to find great plus-size brands to shop for regular clothing, shopping for a swimsuit can feel like an impossible feat. 

Luckily for women everywhere, the brand Good American is back at it. Launched in 2016 by Emma Grede and Khloé Kardashian, the brand became the place to shop for plus-size denim and was picked up by all our favorite retailers. This past June, the brand has decided to take it to the next level by launching its first-ever swimwear collection.

To celebrate the launch, we spoke with Grede about the plus-size swimwear collection and what’s next for the company. Ahead, you’ll find your new favorite swimsuit for your socially distanced day by the water.

Good American made a name for itself with its size-inclusive denim. What compelled you to expand into the swimwear market? 

When we think about launching new products and categories, we always look to our customers. We truly value their feedback and apply any learnings we can to new styles. Swim was, in fact, our most-requested category to-date and was in the works for nearly two years.  

We also recognize that shopping for swimwear can feel impossible and comes with so many challenges. We wanted to make that more seamless experience for our customers. We incorporated a number of different elements of support to work for different body types, giving women swimwear that will make them feel confident, sexy, and their very best.

Where did you draw inspiration from for the first swimwear collection? What pieces did you feel you needed to create for this collection? 

When designing this collection, it was extremely important for us to incorporate elements of support and adjustability without sacrificing style. Our customer loves leopard, so we mixed bold prints with solids in reversible styles to provide her with options. There are a number of fun and sexy silhouettes, as well as classic swimsuit styles within the collection that offer fuller support and coverage. It’s hard to find full looks that can easily transition from the pool or the beach into your everyday wardrobe, and we wanted this collection to feel easy and versatile.

Can you tell us a little about your design process? How does designing swimwear differ if at all from your design process for denim and activewear? 

Swimwear is a tough category, and just like denim, women can dread the process of buying it. Our approach to design for all categories in the same way with a focus on fit and fabrications and we bring our customers into the conversation early on by asking them what they can’t find and what problems they need to solve. The design process for swimwear is similar to all of our denim, ready-to-wear, and activewear. 

We have an extremely talented in-house design team who all have years of experience and are experts in fit. Our team prides itself on attention to detail and the importance of creating designs with multiple body types in mind. We’re constantly reviewing our product throughout the process and going through multiple rounds of fittings on different fit models, applying feedback from each fitting to inform our final designs. With our swimwear, we placed an extra emphasis on perfecting the fit because we know how daunting it can be to find a suit that feels supportive yet sexy. 

Does anything about this collection stand out to you in terms of how different it is from other competitive swimwear collections? 

We designed our swim collection for women of many shapes and sizes. We put a significant emphasis on fit and invested two years to make sure we got it just right. So much of the collection is adjustable and customizable to your particular body. From double drawstrings and adjustable straps that provide full coverage and support to belts that accentuate waists and a unique tummy-tucking technology to help smooth, we incorporated even the smallest details to give women that extra support so they can look and feel their best! 

Finding a swimsuit is a challenge in and of itself, but for curvier women, finding quality suits can feel impossible. What problems do you hope this collection solves for curvier consumers? 

With this collection, we wanted to alleviate the pain points that come with finding that perfect suit. No matter any size, we wanted to give women of all shapes and sizes quality swimwear that makes every woman look and feel their best. Whether denim, ready-to-wear, performance—and now swim—we want our customers to know that with Good American, they'll always find the very best fit, period. And similar to all of our collections, it was important to us to model swim on women of different shapes and sizes on our e-commerce site so all women can feel represented and seen in the shopping experience.

How has your experience as a BIPOC informed the way you approach designing, if at all? How has your personal style informed the way you approach design decisions? 

Since the inception of Good American, I have always been passionate about creating a company that focuses on inclusivity. With Good American, I wanted to create clothing that was available in a range of sizes and modeled on women of all sizes and racial backgrounds, which many brands were not offering. All of our collections, category launches, and initiatives (like our open castings) are focused on inclusion and representation. We are constantly thinking about how we can push the boundaries of inclusivity even further, as I want to support and stand with our BIPOC community—especially at such a critical moment for human rights and racial equality.

In terms of my personal style, I am always excited to test out our new products. When we design a new denim fit or legging, I wear the piece through my day-to-day to make sure we’ve got the fit just right and our pieces are versatile enough to style with any existing wardrobe.

It’s been four years since you co-founded Good American. What do you think you’ve learned since then? What’s next for the brand? 

We’ve learned so much, but I think our biggest takeaway has been to continue listening to our customers and understanding the value of their feedback. The launch of swim has been wildly successful, and it goes to show how important it is to design pieces with your customers’ feedback in mind. We want to stick to our mission, and we’re proud of our position in the market and industry. We want to keep the core of what we do while creating new products to meet our customer’s needs. Swimwear was our most-requested category, again, so we’re excited to see what comes next and what we’ll be able to share with our #GoodSquad. We have a lot in store for them this year and beyond!

What do you hope the industry and consumers take away from the launch of Good American’s swimwear collection? 

So many women have been ignored in the fashion industry up until this point, and while some brands are starting to recognize this and introduce inclusive sizing, there is still a stigma in fashion against size inclusivity. There’s a hesitation among brands to offer a larger range of sizing because it varies from the "standard” design process they’ve been using for years. We’re definitely starting to see that the industry can change—even if it is a slower process—and we’re proud to be leading that change at Good American.

There are two types of people in the world: Those who love pants, and those who loathe them. I’ve always fallen in the latter category. Since I lived in Los Angeles for the past four years, my wardrobe did not require pants. In fact, at one point, I only owned one pair of jeans because why wear pants when it’s not required? Alas, upon purging my wardrobe to move to New York City, I realized that the new climate would require the one thing my wardrobe was lacking. You guessed it: pants.

So in the name of explorative journalism, I decided to try to wear pants for a week, and to be honest, I failed miserably. In the beginning, it felt like a week of experimentation, but it quickly turned into feeling like I was forcing myself to wear pants. And while I failed to wear pants for seven days in a row (I can’t become a pant person overnight), I did manage to tolerate and—dare I say—like pants at the end of my journey. So for my anti-pant people everywhere, here are small trials you can do at home to rip off the Band-Aid and put some pants on. I promise it won’t hurt.

Trial #1: Try on a suit.

Okay, my anti-pant people—I know you might have nightmares about ill-fitting jeans, but I’m here to remind you that there are other types of pants in the world that aren’t denim. As someone who spent no time in pants for four years and loathes most denim, I decided that elevated slacks would be an easy way to rip the Band-Aid off. In fact, suiting, which is one of the season’s biggest trends, is the easiest way to slip into a pair of pants. Plus, who wouldn’t want to wear a velvet suit? 

Trial #2: Meet the jumpsuit.

Like many before, I found shopping for pants—both new and secondhand—draining, but with jumpsuits, the stress is gone. This secondhand Guess sweater-jumpsuit was as easy to put on as a dress, and I ended up throwing it on every time I was running late. Basically, a jumpsuit is like a chic set of training wheels for the pant novice. 

Trial #3: Embrace the idea of leather pants.

I knew that if I were going to do this whole pant thing, then I was going to try leather pants. I'm here to report back, my friends, that they aren’t that scary. They’re basically like jeans but way better. In fact, I couldn’t stop re-wearing these faux-leather patent pants from Good American. The key to pulling them off, I found, is picking a pair that works for you—i.e., in fit and fabric—and then pairing them with something über-cozy (like this Rails sweater) to balance out the look. 

Trial #4: Opt for a flare fit.

So you’ve made it this far, and you’re starting to become a seasoned pant person. It’s time for the next level: jeans. Before you roll your eyes, let me state the obvious. Jeans can be problematic, especially for anyone who's pant-averse. Not only are they not appropriate for most traditional workspaces, but finding a pair you love on your body is no easy feat. That being said, I found the key to pulling them off at work is all in the styling. When I opted for a dark-wash flare fit from DL1961 and paired it with my favorite secondhand Fendi bag from LePrix, I found that jeans can, in fact, look polished enough for work—so much so that they also have the power to convince the most anti-denim person that denim is—gasp—not that bad after all. 

Trial #5: When in doubt, go vintage.

As a curvier woman, I found shopping for jeans rather demoralizing. But in truth, I just didn’t know what I liked, nor what sizing would be best for me. In challenging myself to wear pants, I had to find out what types of cuts, washes, and fits I wanted. It took time, but eventually, I found a good vintage pair of jeans that I actually feel comfortable wearing (at least on the weekends). What I’d suggest for anyone looking for jeans is to give themselves time. Go to Nordstrom or a thrift shop and try on every type of fit and wash until you have a clear idea of the type of jean person you are because that’s half the battle. 

Trial #6: Don't doubt the power of basic pants.

I must admit that I really was trying to avoid the whole basic-pant lecture—but it’s inevitable. Anyone whose wardrobe lacks pants must accept the hard fact that you should own at least one pair of pants you call your staple pants. You can opt for skinny jeans, you can opt for black slacks, or you can opt for black jeans (like I did), but on the coldest of days, your legs will thank you. I can attest to the fact that having a great pair of jeans that are stretchy enough (like these Good American ones) to be layered underneath for the colder winter days is necessary. And with time, this "basic” piece will become not so basic.

Trial #7: Invest in a statement pair.

Part of my contemptuous relationship with pants can also be attributed to the fact that I don’t want to be spotted in the same pair of skinny jeans as everyone else. If you’re anything like me, I highly recommend investing in a unique pair to avoid falling into the basic-pant trope. I never thought I’d be able to believe in love at first sight with a pair of pants, but these two-tone pants from Choosy had the most skeptical pant person believing in love. And while that seems like a lie considering the fact that a few weeks ago I wouldn’t dare step near the pant rack, what I’ve learned from this experiment is that I will always love a good pleated skirt or wrap dress, but the key to becoming a pant person is finding the pairs you really love.

It’s been a little over a year since Khloé Kardashian and her business partner Emma Grede introduced Good American to the world. And despite the fact that there are many products the Kardashian family attaches their names to, hopefully this one hasn’t been lost in the shuffle for you. In a discussion yesterday with Good American’s co-founders, Grede said she knew their size 00 to 24 line would resonate with shoppers, but she didn’t expect retail’s reaction. “Nordstrom really credited Good American with the change to their entire retail strategy. They’ve gone out to every brand to ask them to do expended sizing,” she said referring to the mass retailer’s announcement earlier this month. “People don’t believe they have the customer,” Grede says about retailers still reluctant to embrace inclusivity, “And I say to them, ‘You do have the customer. She’s just buying her bags and shoes from you.’”

Even Kardashian said on the panel that she’s surprised at the brand’s success and impact in just a year and admitted it didn’t come without its mistakes, specifically with some sizing in season one’s jeans that’s since been resolved. “When you take ownership of your mistakes, people really appreciate that,” she said.

As for year two, Kardashian and Grede are kicking it off with a VFiles pop-up shop collaboration over the next two days in New York, new permanent placement within Bloomingdale's stores, and maybe even future plans to come to fashion week. “I hope so,” was all Kardashian would say. Other than that, “We’re just simmering and letting it happen,” she said about Good American’s impact on inclusivity.

We’ll also argue, the brand’s had an impact on trends, almost as much as on equality. “I’m shocked by how people responded to that silhouette,” Kardashian told us about the Bermuda shorts style introduced earlier this year. “We were nervous about producing that, and it sold out so quickly. It’s not a very popular silhouette, but everyone loves it. It really flatters every girl’s body.”

While it would be lovely if every pair of jeans we acquired had the perfect inseam length, it's hardly ever the case, as we know from experience. Most jeans made for women come in one inseam length, which adds to the unlikelihood that they'll work for bodies of any height, especially when we add different shoe styles into the equation. That said, there are different things we can keep in mind when shopping for denim and visiting the tailor, and we found just the professional to boil it all down for us.

Katya Torres is the owner of Denim Surgeon, the New York City–based denim-tailoring experts that distress, repair, and perfect the fit of any pair of jeans that come their way. We consulted Torres on the subject of the best length for both shorter women and taller women, and her tips are sure to clear up any questions you may have about denim inseams. While having an expert opinion is always a good idea, we do want to remind you that style is individual and should be tackled however you please. What Is an Inseam?

Before we start, let's get a little clarification on what exactly an "inseam" refers to when it comes to sizing.

An inseam is the length of the inner leg seam on jeans or pants starting from the groin to the ankle. The longer your legs are, the higher your inseam will be, while petite sizing will have a shorter inseam. See the chart below for further clarification on inseams according to height.

Inseams for Shorter or Petite Women

"For shorter-than-average women such as myself (I'm 5'2"), avoid very baggy and boxy-cut jeans," Torres suggests. "Bell-bottoms are okay if you only plan on wearing them with (very) high heels or wedges that are completely covered by the jeans' hem. It's a great optical illusion. Slim-fitting (tapered) or straight-leg jeans are flattering for shorter women, whether they're cropped, ankle, or standard length. We recommend an inseam no less than 21 inches. Avoid jeans that are too long, as they create a huge break (also known as stacking). A proper hem on jeans is crucial to a shorter or petite woman. Raw-edge hems also look great, but always keep in mind that proper length is key."

For taller women, Torres says, "Anything goes, really. High-waisted jeans look great, whether they're slim and long or relaxed and cropped. From personal experience fitting tall women, jean length is typically a matter of personal preference and varies on the type of footwear that you plan to wear. But the rule of thumb is we go with the longest possible inseam if the client seeks a longer-looking leg. A shorter inseam (i.e., cropped or ankle length) will break up the vertical-denim flow."

If we had to guess the item in your closet that gets the most wear, we’d put our money on your favorite pair of skinny jeans. They’re comfortable, versatile, and hey, flattering. While we’ll always want to fall back on our classic blues and blacks, though, having fashion-forward skinnies is a must too. Now that we’re a few months into 2017, there’s no time like the present to do a little spring-cleaning (and shopping) and jump on the skinny-jean styles that are going to be huge in the coming months.

To help navigate which trends are in and out, we reached out to retail analytics company Edited. Head analyst Emily Bezzant took a closer look at the market data and shared which trends are flying off the shelves—and which have stopped moving the needle. According to Bezzant, “Skinny jeans in nontraditional denim colors are selling out slowly despite seeing higher discounts, notably pinks.” Yes, the data shows that colored skinny jeans are on the way out.

So while it may be time to ditch rainbow-hued skinnies (unless you really love them—in which case, by all means, continue to wear), Bezzant predicts that denim with special details is going to take over this year. She specifically calls out ripped knees, embroidery, and frayed or step hems as standout styles. “With activewear becoming more acceptable attire for daywear, denim has had to become that bit more special to warrant sales,” she said.

With our constant daily to-do lists, it's not unusual to spend an entire day running from responsibility to responsibility, which is why in 2017, there's nothing more important than a wardrobe that works with you.

It will come as no surprise then that when it comes to the dos and don'ts of getting dressed, the women who inspire our style have one thing in common: They choose comfort and versatility when picking out their outfit.

Whether that means never wearing heels, or staying away from anything too restrictive, six chic women shared exactly what they do and don't do when getting ready. Armed with their advice, we hope getting up on the right side of the bed will feel just a little bit easier.

Don't: Wear Anything That's Not Versatile Enough to Survive the Whole Day

If there's one word that describes Walker's morning outfit decisions, it's comfort. "I never feel uncomfortable. On a normal day, I may attend shows, but I also have buying meetings and I need to feel comfy." For Walker, this means she never starts the day in heels, "I can't work in high heels because my feet always hurt. I tend to wear platforms, and I love that sneakers are so on trend."

When it comes to getting dressed, Mejia has one important rule, "no visible panty lines!" And while picking the right underwear for the day ahead is crucial, she also notes she has one other big no-go when getting dressed. "Being too matchy-matchy (except for denim on denim)." 

For the stylist, dressing is all about dressing in pieces that make her comfortable. "I try not to dress too young," she says. "A good friend once said to me 'if you wore it the first time around, you shouldn't the second time around.' This doesn't apply to clothing that has a nod to a trend but it can't be too literal in design… it won't work." She also notes that when it comes to dressing for work, she avoids pieces that are restrictive or uncomfortable, "it will just irritate me within an hour."

When she's getting ready in the morning, Sabharwal says there's one thing she'll never do, "put my makeup on before I'm fully dressed." And when it comes to picking out what to wear, she says unless she's off to the gym, shiny leggings are to be avoided. "Keep a little to the imagination," she notes. "And if you are going to do it, make sure to avoid underwear lines."

Since her busy schedule leaves her constantly on the go, Lee knows that it's all about clothing that can get you through anything. "Entrepreneurship has left a lot less time for everything else in my life, so versatility and comfort became increasingly important filters for my personal style," she says. "I avoid anything that distracts me from focusing on what's important; so I gravitate toward beautiful clothes that I can live and work in."

When it comes to morning rituals, the designer has one that's pretty darn important, "I never get dressed without checking the weather forecast." Nonoo notes that walking to work every day means that being prepared is key to making through the day unscathed. "Every good New Yorker lives by the weather forecast or faces the consequences at their own peril," she says.
