A lot of styles will try to compete with it, but with so many of the most influential names in Hollywood, not to mention others in London and New York City, prioritizing it this year, there's no way another can rise up and usurp it. The 2026 dress trend I'm referring to? Lace slip dresses, which have already been spotted on the likes of Zoë Kravitz (not once but twice in one night), Dakota Fanning, and more. Here's everything we know about the trend so far.

Dating back to the latter part of 2025, lace slip dresses have become synonymous with well-dressed women in stylish cities, whether they style them casually during the day or style them up for red carpet events. Fanning, for example, attended W magazine's Best Performances Party at Chateau Marmont on the eve of the 2026 Golden Globes, wearing a long, ivory-colored version. Nina Park-ified blurred lips!), but I audibly gasped when I saw her soft-girl glam at this year's Golden Globes. Yes, I really did zoom all the way in on those red carpet photos and clocked a sheer, foggy polish that made her tips look swathed in silk. Luckily for me, celebrity manicurist Betina Goldstein shared all the details on Kravitz's manicure du jour, plus a close-up shot to take to your next nail appointment. Goldstein dubs this set "soft, natural nails with a touch of cloudy French," which takes it a step further from your average clean, naked mani. Essentially, think of it like sheer dressing for your nails. As I watched celebrities step onto the Oscars 2025 red carpet on Sunday night, one thing stood out: the near-absence of the sheer, barely-there dresses that have long dominated Hollywood’s biggest night.

For years, the Oscars has served as a stage for boundary-pushing, skin-baring fashion, with celebrities embracing diaphanous gowns that left little to the imagination. But this year, something shifted. Instead of sheer panels and transparent fabrics, the red carpets (both for the main event and the official Vanity Fair afterparty) were filled with a new kind of risqué dressing—one that leaned into structure and sensuality. Even though it's giving us major '60s vibes, it was actually inspired by some of the biggest '90s icons. That's according to an exclusive Allure interview with Stone's longtime stylist Mara Roszak. She said that she added pictures of Winona Ryder in 1996 and Liv Tyler in 1998 to her mood board. "It's been growing out, and it's looking so stunning—very '90s in that nostalgic way," she said.

When Zendaya asked Nicole Kidman why she wanted to work on her latest project, Babygirl, during their Variety Actors on Actors interview, Kidman's answer was simple and very easy to turn into a meme: "As soon as I heard it was called Babygirl, I'm like, 'Yeah, I want to be the babygirl,'" she said. Just in case she didn't become the babygirl enough in the film, she sure did on the red carpet at the 2025 Golden Globes, where her completely backless and rhinestone-covered gown fit the nickname.

For the 82nd annual Golden Globe Awards, Kidman and her stylist Jason Bolden worked with Balenciaga to create a custom one-shoulder gown made of crystal- and rhinestone-embroidered mesh, according to the French fashion house. The dress was based on look 55 from Balenciaga's fall 2023 haute couture collection, which was purple, as opposed to Kidman's iridescent silver look. With it, she wore a pair of cream satin pumps also by Balenciaga and a bevy of jewelry items by Boucheron, including diamond-and-tanzanite drop earrings and a 4.10-carat diamond ring.

The Golden Globes are the first award show of the season. It's also the first award show of the new year. That means it ushers in the biggest beauty trends for the next 365 days and beyond. In other words, it's worth paying attention to.

This time, we noticed one overwhelming and overarching beauty trend immediately. We're talking about big, bold, and maximalist hair. Yep, you heard it here first. It seems the minimalist aesthetic is on its way out, and eye-catching volume and length are in. Whether it was sky-high, '60s-inspired volume on the likes of Nicole Kidman and Margaret Qualley or long, princess-like locks on Demi Moore and Maren Morris, we're calling it. Hair extensions are *it* for 2025.

There's only one word for Kidman's '60s-inspired style: stunning. If this doesn't make the case for using volume-boosting hair extensions in 2025, we don't know what will. Bonus points if you opt for flipped ends like Kidman.

Celebrity hairstylist, Adir Abergel, started by spraying Virtue's Volumizing Primer ($40) on Kidman's roots. Then, he applied the Damage Reverse Serum ($60) from roots to ends. Once the prep was done, he used Kristin Ess's Soft Volume Blow Dry Brush ($85) to smooth Kidman's hair, before pulling it tight into a ponytail and incorporating Bellami 18-inch Silk Seam Clip-In Hair Extensions in Golden Hour ($210) to the crown and the back of the head. Then, he used Kristin Ess's Titanium Curling Iron ($51) to shape the hair. The final touch was Virtue's Healing Oil ($45) for a high-shine finish.

Qualley also wore her hair in a '60s-inspired bouffant style. We love how glossy and luxurious her hair looks and how it was complemented with a thin crystal-covered headband.

Moore's waist-length locks are giving us fairytale vibes in the best way. They were styled by celebrity hairstylist Dimitris Giannetos. "Demi is wearing a gold haute couture Armani dress, and I wanted to keep her hair classic Old Hollywood but at the same time more ethereal and effortless," he said. He used Moroccanoil products, starting with the brand's Root Boost ($32) to give her hair volume. Then, he blow-dried her hair with a round brush and sprayed the Dry Texture Spray ($32) throughout. After curling her hair in different directions using the Everlasting Curl Titanium Curling Iron ($160), he brushed her hair and added a spritz of the Luminous Hair Spray - Strong Finish ($28) to secure the look for the night.

Morris's wavy, brunette hair fell far past her waist. Celebrity hairstylist, Laura Polko, was the expert behind the look. "With a look like Maren's, where the curls are brushed out to create a more polished, airy wave, many people worry about the curls falling," Laura said. "The key is to let the curls set and cool completely before brushing them out. Hair will set in the shape it cools in, so it's important to give it time to cool first, ensuring the waves stay intact without losing their shape."

She prepped Maren's hair with Laura Polko Los Angeles Leave-In Conditioner ($7). After rough-drying her hair, she smoothed out the ends with a round brush and curled her lengths with a 1.25-inch curling iron. (She sprayed each section with Big Sexy Hair Spray ($23) before wrapping it around the iron). For Maren's front pieces, she used Sun Bum's Surf Paste ($17) to keep the style in place.

There are a lot of famous families in Hollywood, but none can compete—at least to us—with Elle and Dakota Fanning. We're rarely fortunate enough to see them together publicly, but when we do, it's always a viral moment. Tonight at the 82nd annual Golden Globe Awards, held at The Beverly Hilton, that's exactly what we got.

The elder of the two Fanning sisters, Dakota, is nominated in the Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role on Television category for her performance in Ripley, and she certainly dressed for the carpet she'd be walking on. For the occasion, Dakota and her longtime stylist Samantha McMillen chose a bright-red Dolce & Gabbana gown with a draped bodice, attached scarf, and sky-high slit. The color is daring for the red carpet (and it's a huge trend right now), but she pulled it off with ease.

Her younger sister, who recently starred in the Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown alongside Timothée Chalamet and Monica Barbara, came to support her. Like Dakota, Elle has worked with McMillen for years, and the two always come up with something perfect and high-octane for award shows like the Golden Globes. This year, the actress went with Balmain and Cartier, choosing a champagne-colored satin ball gown with a leopard-print bodice. With so many big-deal films and TV shows this year, we knew the 82nd annual Golden Globe Awards was going to have a good turnout, but I, for one, didn't anticipate it being as good as this. Shocker, Zoë Kravitz was one of the best dressed people on the guest list.

To kick off the official award-season calendar, Kravitz chose a strapless black-and-white gown designed by Saint Laurent's creative director and her long-time friend, Anthony Vaccarello. But the color palette and silhouette aren't what really stood out about the classic look. Instead, it was the fabric Vaccarello made it out of. In case you missed it, the 81st annual Golden Globes took place last night in Los Angeles. There were many notable beauty looks, but it should come as no surprise that Margot Robbie was among them. The actress paired her hot-pink custom Armani Privé dress with a glowing complexion and glossy hair. In my opinion, the look was complete and utter perfection—especially when you consider the underrated element that took her Barbie commitment to a whole new level. I'm talking about her barely there manicure. 

Nail artist Betina Goldstein created a nude manicure that matched Robbie's skin tone perfectly. Usually, nail experts recommend choosing a nude nail polish that's one shade lighter or darker than your skin tone for contrast, but Goldstein opted for an exact match—and for good reason. Goldstein posted a picture of Robbie's nails on her Instagram page, explaining, "For Margot’s nails, I wanted them to blend in with her skin to create the illusion of Barbie doll hands." 

Here's a close-up picture taken from Goldstein's Instagram page. As you can see, Robbie's nails are pretty much a perfect match for her skin tone, which gives them that doll-like effect they were after. Goldstein calls them "Barbie doll hands," but we've also heard of this kind of nude manicure being referred to as "mannequin hands" before. 

Whatever you call it, this manicure is understated and surprisingly chic, which is why we were so excited to find out the exact nail polish shades Goldstein used to create the look. One of the best things about the awards season is that there's always sure to be something that takes you by surprise—e.g., one project could secure every single award or drama that ensues backstage (or sometimes onstage). But for Who What Wear editors, what always keeps us on our toes comes back to the moment when celebrities step onto the red carpet. We never know what people will wear, what trends will emerge, or what red carpet-looks will go viral. Sadly, though, in recent years, we've been in a bit of a dry spell when it comes to awards show style that, well, surprises. 

Don't get us wrong, we will always love a pretty red carpet look, but there's something to be said about those willing to take risks, especially when you're dressing up for an event as formal as the Golden Globes. It seems that so many celebrities are worried about whether they'll land on the "best dressed" list that they forget to enjoy the getting dressed-up part. However, that wasn't the case with one star this year: Kylie Jenner. While one might argue she wasn't necessarily "fully dressed" (wait until you see her ultra-sheer lace gown), nonetheless, her presence was a welcome shift from the sea of cliché gowns. 

Many did not know Jenner would be in the audience at the Golden Globes since she did not walk the red carpet. However, she was there during the ceremony to support her beau, Timothée Chalamet, which quickly captured the attention of the internet. Although most of the buzz did surround the on-screen kiss they shared, we were more enthralled with their looks for the evening. Frankly, you won't blame us once you see them for yourselves! Before we get to Miss. Jenner's look for the evening, we must at least acknowledge the man of the evening: Chalamet. Garnering his third Golden Globe nomination, the actor was up for the category "Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture" for the film Wonka. Chalamet chose to celebrate the occasion by wearing head-to-toe Celine Homme by Hedi Slimane. He might not have won the globe this evening, but this look was a winner in our books. Plus, he got to snuggle up with Jenner for the evening, which who wouldn't want to after seeing her look? 

Jenner might have skipped the Golden Globes red carpet, but make no mistake, she still served a look. One of the best things about the award season is that there's always sure to be something that takes you by surprise—e.g., one project securing every single award or drama ensuing backstage or sometimes onstage. For Who What Wear editors, what always keeps us on our toes comes back to the moment when celebrities step onto the red carpet. We never know what people will wear, what trends will emerge, or which red carpet looks will go viral. Sadly, though, we've been in a bit of a dry spell when it comes to award show style that, well, surprises. 

Don't get us wrong. We will always love a pretty red carpet look, but there's something to be said about those willing to take risks, especially when you're dressing up for an event as formal as the Golden Globes! It seems that so many celebrities are worried about whether they'll land on a best dressed list that they forget to enjoy the "getting dressed up" part. However, that wasn't the case with one star this year: Kylie Jenner. One might argue she wasn't necessarily fully dressed. (Wait until you see her ultra-sheer lace gown.) The 80th Golden Globes on Tuesday marked the kickoff to our favorite season: award season.
