It's not often that you'll find me fawning over yet another makeup launch, let alone a blush. But every beauty insider knows that Glossier Cloud Paint is far from your average blusher. Having flipped the world of minimalist makeup trends on its head all the way back in 2017, this iconic glowy blush has found its way into practically every beauty editor's makeup bag—courtesy of its buildable pigment and a radiant finish.

And in my humble opinion, it paved the way for the whole cream blush movement before it even became a thing (a bold statement, I know). In fact, I can account for at least five emptied-out tubes that I've thrown out in the last four years alone. Now, imagine my excitement when I got wind of the news that Glossier is launching a new iteration of the Cloud Paint blusher—a hybrid plush formula that applies like a cream and dries down like powder for a soft-focused, blurred makeup look.

Full disclosure: I've sworn off powder formulas a good few years ago, and apart from an occasional dab of setting powder, my choice of makeup products often leans on the glowier side (read: skin tints, cream bronzers, liquid highlighters—you name it). So, although I was very much intrigued by the launch, at first, I was convinced that because of its powdery nature, the new Glossier blush wasn't for me.

From the get-go, I loved the packaging. In keeping with the brand's aesthetic, it is minimalist yet playful, mirroring the colour of each shade on the outside. Housed inside each compact, the formula is unlike any blush I've tried so far (and that's no mean feat, considering I've quite literally tested hundreds). The "memory cloud" soufflé-like texture means that each dab into the product feels like touching the softest Play-Doh.

Innovative textures aside, the shade range doesn't disappoint either. With ten shades in total, four of said shades were inspired by the original Cloud Paint blush line-up (Puff, Beam, Soar and Storm), while the remaining six are brand-new additions. From wearable mauve-y pinks and bolder corals and reds to the more muted blonzer-esque shades, there's no shortage of options to complement every skin tone.

Having opted for shade Puff (a neutral pinky hue), I first applied it using the brand's new dual-ended Cloud Paint Cheek Brush, which features a pillowy-soft end that feels like applying makeup with your fingertips and a fluffy brush end designed to buff, diffuse and blend.

Make no mistake: this isn't the most pigmented blusher on the market, but nor is it trying to be. It offers a buildable veil of flexible coverage that can be easily amped up if you're after that dramatic look, but it's also sheer enough to wear on a day-to-day basis.

To my surprise, it doesn't feel drying at all. Rather, it delivers the same smooth and seamless application that you'd expect from a cream blusher. Thanks to ingredients like powdered ceramides and botanical glycerides, it doesn't grip to any of my dry patches, ensuring comfortable wear all day long.

As it dries down, you start to notice the blurring effect almost immediately—but not the kind that leaves you looking all cake-y and filtered. Although it is on the more matte side, it still maintains that skin-like finish, which is almost never the case with other powder blushes I've tried before.

Above all, I appreciate how seamlessly it works with the rest of my makeup. Often, when you apply a powder directly on top of a glowy foundation, the formula may lift, move around and inevitably turn patchy. I'm glad to report that due to its hybrid nature, the Glossier formula does nothing of the sort. In fact, I have even tried layering some liquid highlighter right over top to restore some of the shine on the high points of my cheeks, and I have had no issues whatsoever.

That said, as impressive as it is, the real test is the longevity check. After all, we all know that blush is the first product to move, slip or gradually disappear throughout the day. And nothing puts a formula to the test better than wearing it on a busy day of running around between press appointments in central London.

To my surprise, despite having been on my face since the crack of dawn, it stayed firmly in place without budging. Around late afternoon, I topped it up to intensify the pigment just before heading out to dinner, and I can confirm that by the time I'd returned home, apart from looking a bit worn-in, it sure didn't look as though it had been over 11 hours since the first application. About the only con worth mentioning is that I wish the compact also included a mirror for easier on-the-go touch-ups.

Long story short, this blusher singlehandedly made me fall in love with powder formulas all over again. Everything from its innovative texture to the impressive shade range and the handy brush that it comes with proves that the era of blurring makeup products is far from over.

Beauty has always been a means for connection, but there's one universal icebreaker that ties us all: What lip balm are you using? It's no secret that the lip market is capital-N noisy. The categories are increasingly blurred, but still, every time I see a chic individual glide a glossy situation across their pout, I want to know what tint they deem worthy—and why. After all, lip balms easily reflect the personality (and oftentimes the aesthetic) of the wearer given the fact that many don't leave home without one or two stalwart formulas. These days, it can feel like you're only as cool as the mysterious, sparkling tube poking out of your jacket pocket or wedged inside a branded phone case. (Yep, you know the one.)

Will I ever stop complimenting strangers on their lip combos? Certainly not, but I did ask stylish experts about the It-girl balms they hold dear and what exactly makes them tick. After cross-referencing my conversations (beauty journalism, folks!), I landed on this criteria—plus 15 viral balms truly worth their salt—below.

What makes a cult-favorite lip balm?

Let's face it: Gourmand fragrances are having a moment (hell, a year), and while we've seen more elevated iterations as of late (grown-up marshmallow over vanilla, for instance), edible notes have never been buzzier. It only makes sense that we'd see that carry over to the lip category, as lip balm is also a sensory experience. No, you don't actually ingest your lip product, but you do experience traces of flavor the same way you might catch a whiff of perfume on your sleeve.

Be it birthday cake, hot cocoa, berry crumble, or rich espresso, a sweet flavor can feel quite comforting, evoking positive memories associated with indulgent moments. So you reach for it again and again… and again. As Marianna Hewitt, co-founder of Summer Fridays declares, "when something becomes a part of your daily routine, that's when it starts to feel like a favorite."

Lauren Gores Ireland, co-founder of Summer Fridays, says that a cult lip balm must have the "perfect mix of form and function." It needs a stellar formula as well as a smooth application, a nonsticky finish, and thoughtful, elevated packaging, and bonus points if said packaging includes some sort of accessory component, such as a phone case (hi, Rhode) or kitschy keychain. These extra elements help a lip balm stand out in an oversaturated market and, quite literally, inside an overcrowded tote.

Take Cocokind, which recently made its first foray into color cosmetics. "We added a built-in ring for charms (coming soon!) so you can attach it to your keys, lanyard, or bag because no one wants to dig through their bag for a lost lip balm," founder Priscilla Tsai previously told WWW about the brand's new tinted balms. It also does help that many of these accessories are limited edition, like the Summer Fridays Birthday Cake Keychain, or have amassed wait lists in the thousands, like Rhode's Lip Case. Scarcity sells—much to the horror of my monthly credit card bill.

"To me, a culty lip tint is one that turns heads, whether someone sees it in person or on your Instagram story and immediately thinks, 'What does she know that I don't?'" poses beauty editor Iman Balagam. A chic aesthetic—be it sophisticated packaging, a sleek metal applicator, or a curated social presence—is a huge part of constructing that je ne sais quoi. After all, "[lip balms] are a great way to treat yourself to a little piece of luxury," Sephora Beauty Director Helen Phillips Dagdag shares. Brands that lean into a "treat yourself" aesthetic (sometimes with a sweet flavor to match) do tend to prove their shelf appeal.

That's not to say a wallet-friendly formula can't attain viral status. However, lip balms have long been gateway products into the premium beauty market, and as time has shown, consumers will drop extra coin for an elevated experience.

Of course, the lip balm must, well, work. A lippie can have all the bells and whistles, but if it doesn't actually enhance the delicate skin, all those pretty elements are for naught. "The consumer is so educated in this day and age," adds Aly Korchemniy, founder and creative director of Anfisa Skin. "You can't just have these flashing lights and colors anymore. … It's [more about] gorgeous packaging in addition to an amazing formula."

What constitutes an amazing formula goes beyond run-of-the-mill hydration—think collagen-stimulating players like peptides, gentle skin smoothers (AHAs, enzymes) to prevent flakes, and clinically backed plumping complexes that rival the results of filler with, of course, a gorgeous tint to boot. "I think that's why we're seeing so many lip 'treatments' versus just lip glosses," shares Daise Bedolla, beauty editor at Into the Gloss and creator of the I Just Want to Talk newsletter. "In order to stand out, brands need to offer something different."

In the same vein, expert approval is also priceless, especially when it comes to the balm's longevity as a cult favorite. As someone who tests no less than three new lip balms every single week (I really wish I was exaggerating), I can say that the formulas with staple status are the ones I've seen on the desks of my favorite estheticians, derms, and fellow editors. Oftentimes, that expert seal of approval has stronger legs than a super-buzzy collab or giveaway—no matter how chic the merch may be.

"Anfisa is a good example," Bedolla agrees. "They definitely seed to other people but were careful about sending it to, yes, editors but also facialists, who are regularly seeing clients and also have the knowledge to understand ingredients. They partnered with Elizabeth [Grace Hand] and Ställe, for example, for the launch of [Ân-Gloss in] Berry Crumble. Elizabeth is someone who I innately trust because of her studio's careful brand selection, so an endorsement in the way of hosting a launch is a big deal to me and signals a product that's worth having a cult following." Even derm-led brand Dr. Whitney Bowe Beauty prioritized getting its new lip treatment into the hands of other experts (celebrity facialist Ian Michael Crumm, triple-board-certified dermatologist Mamina Turegano, MD, FAAD, and celebrity makeup artist Theo Turner, to name a few) for the highly anticipated launch, which, lo and behold, garnered a 2000-person wait list.

The 15 Cult-Favorite Lip Products Worth Their Salt

What does dewy skin smell like? Technically, you'd say that it smells like whatever scented skincare formulas you've just slathered on (fair point), but allow me to get romantic for just a moment. Dewy skin calls forth a succulent piece of fruit, bursting with juicy flavor; a mossy garden at dawn, shimmering with mist; or, say, the gentle spray of sea breeze. It's clean and fresh yet abstract, I'll admit—until I gave Glossier You Fleur a spritz. What does dewy skin smell like? Ah, yes—that.

Glossier You arguably changed the modern skin scent game when it launched back in 2017, and I'd wager the brand's inaugural floral version will make just as big of a splash. Not only does it have a dry-down that's downright addictive (more on that later), but it also has a "fleshy" quality that's unlike any floral perfume I've ever tried. If you're on the hunt for a new springtime scent, I highly suggest giving this one a whirl. Bonus points if you pair it with a glossy, luminous complexion.

What does Glossier Fleur smell like?

Interestingly, the first word I'd use to describe Fleur isn't "floral." It's soft and powdery, thanks to the osmanthus and slightly creamy ylang-ylang. But both of those blooms, while technically considered flowers, are naturally complex. "From these flowers, I sought to extract what could evoke suede, skin, and velvet, bringing a fleshy and radiant dimension," perfumer Dora Baghriche—who co-created the original Glossier You with Frank Voelkl—tells Who What Wear. They certainly don't screech springtime blooms like, say, a rose or a jasmine.

Apricot skin adds a touch of sweetness, while cashmeran and ambrox give the juice its "skin-like" quality. (The entire Impressions of You family is grounded by the latter, as the synthetic molecule emits a rich, amber-y warmth.) But what makes this a "dewy" fragrance, I'd say, is the mineral salt accord you catch at first whiff.

It's an "unexpected touch in the floral universe," Baghriche notes, but a popular one in the world of skin scents. Salty fragrances, which are oceanic, give your skin an intoxicating jet ne sais quoi. Here, sidled up against soft florals and woody musks, the note evokes shimmering, springtime skin. "It suggests surprise, and sometimes even a skin-like scent [and] a rosiness to the skin—it’s an addictive facet," Baghriche adds. On my skin, that salty note shines through and makes the amber situation even more divine.

How it compares to other florals:

Have you ever noticed how floral perfumes typically have a specific muse? Some elixirs are tuberose-forward, while others go heavy on the gardenia. Fleur, Baghriche says, is "not a literal interpretation of a recognizable flower." Allow her to explain. She adds, "Instead of relying on classic references like rose or jasmine, the composition takes a more abstract approach. Ylang-ylang brings a creamy richness, while osmanthus introduces fruity and coppery facets. Together, they evoke the sensation of petals bathed in light rather than a strict floral note." I mean… swoon. "Petals bathed in light" is officially how I want to smell every single day this spring (and beyond).

Sure, other floral perfumes do feature a bouquet of notes, but Fleur refuses to join a single scent category. It's at once coppery, salty, gourmand, and floral. "The goal was not to replicate a classic floral but to explore an abstract floral sensation through a play on textures and nuances," Baghriche adds. Think of smooth, velvety petals and fuzzy tufts of pollen. "I wanted to translate the tactile dimension of petals, creating a femininity that is not an obvious cliché." In other words, this isn't your grandma's floral fragrance. It's about as effortless and modern as a floral blend can get.

My review and how I wear it:

Baghriche's absolutely right about Fleur's captivating quality. I, for one, have been reaching for it daily since receiving a prelaunch sample a few weeks ago, and not just because the creamy lavender-hued bottle stands out on my vanity. Folks, it makes me smell so freaking good. Delectable. Heavenly. Intoxicating. Dreamy. I can't even come up with enough adjectives to sing its praises.

I always like to cap off my beauty routine with a spritz of perfume, but this one especially begs to be worn right before floating out the door (ideally with naturally flushed, dewy skin). While I could layer it with the original Glossier You—I always keep a travel-sized vial on my desk—I find that I don't even need to reinforce the juice; one spritz of Fleur is more than enough to last me the entire day. In fact, I love to notice how it graduates with each passing hour. What starts out as delicate and powdery eventually becomes warm and sensual.

As a major fan of the original Glossier You, I didn't think an iteration could ever replace the OG in my heart. (I adore You Rêve and You Doux, but to me You still reigns supreme.) Now that I've spent some time with Fleur, I might be ready to crown a new favorite. It still smells like You, just a touch more airy and romantic; as if You had dewy, radiant, ethereal-looking skin.

I need to own up to something. Over the past two months, I have received more compliments on my perfume that I can even recall. (I'd hazard a guess at circa 50 if I had to put a number on it.) And now it's time to come clean—every single time someone has asked me what perfume it is I'm wearing, I've lied. Now, however, I'm officially ready to own up. Yes, Glossier has added another iteration of its cult skin scent into the mix—and this one is, in my opinion, better than any that have come before it (with the exception of the original, of course, because she is an icon). While the creamy, musky, sweetly peppered concoction of Glossier You continues to be one of the most popular perfumes of our time, You Rêve delivers a sugar-dusted depth and You Doux is rolled in sand and ribbons of light smoke, Glossier You Fleur sees the brand entering unchartered territory—florals.

But don't go jumping to conclusions. While You Fleur is, without a shadow of a doubt, a spring perfume, it is not your typical floral. In fact, not one person who has commented on my perfume mentioned that it smells floral in any way, shape or form. And I really want you to believe me on this. I have over a decade of experience writing about and working within the world of fragrance, and scent is my life-long passion. I can't even begin to tell you how many times I have had various beauty brands tell me that their new scent is a "reinvention" of floral perfumery. When I hear this, I switch off.

But Glossier You Fleur came to me packaged as a small vial in a nondescript, unbranded parcel back in January, along with a handwritten note from the PR that read: "I think it's going to be your favourite." Beyond the fact I knew it was called Fleur (French for flower, if you weren't sure), and I had a loose description of it as "an airy and luminous floral blend", I had no reason to believe Glossier had set out to "reimagine" the somewhat dated world of floral perfumes at all—but I stand corrected, because I have never smelled a floral scent quite like it.

After eight weeks of wearing it almost every day, I can confirm that Glossier You Fleur is a triumph. While my usual daily spritzes cost up at around £200 each, I'm surprised to say that the £70 You Fleur has amassed more praise from those around me than all of my other go-tos combined. And as somebody who has earned herself the reputation of somewhat of a perfume psychic when it comes predicting upcoming cult scents, I have a very strong feeling You Fleur will be one of the most popular perfumes of 2025. Glossier You Fleur, Reviewed

If you are already familiar with the slightly sweet, skin-like, musky warmth of Glossier You, I want you to keep this in mind as you read on. While I'll admit I have felt as though Glossier's past additions to the You collection have been slightly void of the original perfume's charm, Fleur has that defining You character by the bucketload. It is, without question, the most similar to the original scent.

It is undeniably a daytime perfume, best spritzed onto warm, bare skin when the sun is shining and the air outside is clear and fresh. It is soft and subtle in the sort of way that makes it feel personal and inviting—the sort of scent that makes you want to nuzzle your nose right into the skin on which its been sprayed.

You Fleur is not a light, juicy floral spritz, nor is it a sweet perfume. Instead, it is a comforting blanket of smooth, creamy dewiness. It is like nectar spilling out onto velvety, powdery petals as the bright sunlight beams down onto it. And it smells like this without ever turning too sweet or saccharine. As though sprinkled with flakes of sea salt, it maintains a fresh bite that keeps you going back for more.

It is like burying your nose into a fine cashmere knit, sunbathing in flower gardens and walking down the street on a bright spring day all at once. It is a bottle of springtime memories that have become rose tined by maturity—fresh without being chilling, sweet without being sugared, floral without being pretty and inviting without being loud. In true You style, it becomes one with the wearer, blurring the line between perfume and skin so expertly that they mould entirely into one.

Glossier You Fleur might be woven with fresh, powdered petals, but it is the skin-like, musky warmth of ambrox and the fresh, nose-tickling hint of sea salt that sews it together to become an all-encompassing veil of familiar comfort.

As a beauty editor who has an obsession with fragrance, I've tried a lot of perfumes during my 10 years as a beauty journalist. I don't wear fragrance for the sole purpose of getting compliments, however, I would be lying if I said I don't enjoy it when someone notices my perfume. Geeta Yadav, MD, is a board-certified dermatologist and the founder of Facet Dermatology. As she's an expert in all things skin, we reached out to ask questions. What ingredients make a good lip balm, and what ingredients make a bad one?

What are the best ingredients to look for in a lip balm?

Humectants like glycerin and hyaluronic acid to help hydrate as well as ceramides and shea butter to help seal in moisture are great ingredients to look for in a lip balm. I'd also recommend looking for a lip balm that features SPF. The lips feature some of the thinnest skin on the body, so it really needs protection against UV.

Are there any ingredients you recommend steering clear of?

I'd advise against using ingredients like camphor or menthol. While they can provide a pleasant cooling effect, they can ultimately irritate and dry the lips, creating a never-ending cycle of reapplication. This is where the myth of "lip balm addiction" comes from. You continually reapply lip balm because your lips feel dry, but it is the camphor-infused lip balm that is drying out your lips in the first place.

How often can/should lip balm be used?

Whenever your lips feel dry or stripped, I'd recommend using SPF lip balm every few hours or after you've eaten/drank. Apply a richer formula at night for deeper treatment.

Are there any other products that you recommend using for dry, flaky lips?

Yes. I'd recommend using a lip exfoliant, either a mild sugar scrub or simply a damp, soft washcloth or toothbrush to remove dead skin. This will help any lip treatment you apply absorb better, moisturizing and softening the fresh, new skin.

Our Research and Testing Process for Lip Balms

This installment of Deep Reviews, like all others, took weeks to complete. Not only do we take our time to research the best products on the market, but we put our top contenders through rigorous testing, which is conducted by our very own editors.

Here's the 411: We started by looking at other publications—Allure, Byrdie, Glamour, and many others. We created a master list of all the lip balms that were recommended. From there, we compared and color-coordinated the lists, looking at how often each lip balm was mentioned as well as its overall ratings and reviews on major beauty retailer sites.

After all of this, we had our list narrowed down to a mere 10 lip balms. All that was left was to do our own testing, and we did. Each editor received the lip balms and was asked to test, rate, and review them. Once we had everyone's responses, we assembled them into a document and ranked each lip balm according to the feedback. By the end, we had crowned the best one.

Journalist Marisa Meltzer always had an interest in Glossier, the beauty brand founded by Emily Weiss. "When Glossier launched nine years ago, I was dying to write about it," Meltzer said. Right before the pandemic, Meltzer wrote a profile about Glossier and Weiss for Vanity Fair. "When the pandemic came, beauty and the power of the beauty industry and Glossier's success was really fresh in my mind," Meltzer said. Despite Meltzer's interest in Glossier, it wasn't her initial intention to write a book about the company and founder. "It was gonna be about all sorts of different companies in different stages of life," Meltzer said. "But then they were all dwarfed by the story of Glossier."

For the latest episode of Who What Wear With Hillary Kerr, Meltzer shares a behind-the-scenes look at what it was like writing Glossy: Ambition, Beauty, and the Inside Story of Emily Weiss's Glossier, her reporting process, and more.

I'm hoping that you can walk our audience through a little bit of the process and really where the idea came from?

Like so many people, I first saw Emily Weiss just watching The Hills on MTV. She was this intern character, was so capable, and actually seemed like what people at magazines were like in New York. It's rare to have that represented in a way that feels authentic. Fast-forward three or four years later, I had heard about this new beauty blog called Into the Gloss. It was doing for beauty what fashion blogs had done. I think someone told me or somehow I put together that this was the same woman from The Hills. It was kind of like, "Oh, of course, she started the coolest website I've ever seen."

When Glossier launched nine years ago, I was dying to write about it. I actually wasn't able to because my editors didn't get it. But then one of the last things I did do right before the pandemic was a long profile of Emily and Glossier for Vanity Fair.

When the pandemic came, beauty and the power of the beauty industry and Glossier's success were really fresh in my mind. I, meanwhile, was wearing sweatpants but doing 25-step beauty routines because I had nothing else to do. I was alone, and I got this idea to write a book about beauty. It was gonna be about all sorts of different companies in different stages of life. But then they were all dwarfed by the story of Glossier. I had to get out of my own way, which is so much what creative projects are sometimes.

Emily [Weiss] is famously not particularly candid on the record, but why do you think there was that level of comfort, or why was she willing to open up to you as much as she would be able to open up to anyone in this scenario?

On one level, I wrote for prestigious publications. When Wired wants to write about you or Vanity Fair wants to do a big feature on you, that's the kind of press you want, and you say yes. I was the person attached to write it. She knew that I was someone who thought deeply about beauty. On just another level, we had some mutual friends. By no means were we friends, but I think she was able to understand me on some level. Maybe that made it a little bit easier for her to open up to me. I could be totally wrong on that. 

When I first asked, it was still this book about beauty, and I think it was just like, "Sure, why not?" It was the pandemic, and I think it was the last thing on their mind. I mean, they could have said no, but she said yes, then started to have ambivalent feelings about that later on.

What parts of writing this book came really easily, and then was there a part that you found difficult to write for any reason?

Everyone wanted to talk and loved to talk about Camp Glossier, which was their annual employee off-site. It seemed like it was so much fun and wholesome. That was easy and a delight to talk about. Honestly, the hardest part was just Emily [Weiss] and our relationship and her ambivalence to the book. She felt, I believe, that she was a bit blindsided that the book was about Glossier, that her name was in the subtitle.

I felt like I was being pretty open about the process over email and that they just weren't really taking it seriously or paying a lot of attention. I think she felt more like I was being a little shady or duplicitous and tried to do a little of the "I thought we were friends" thing. That's when I really had to be like, "We're not friends. We don't hang out socially."

I had to have this moment of standing up for myself in a way and saying, "I have a job, and it's a writer, and it's important, and I want to tell this very nuanced story that I think is rooted in feminism and power." That was hard for me to say about myself. We're in this environment where being a journalist is easy to be hated because of it.

Also, I respected this woman so much. I'm not a sadist. Causing someone pain isn't something that I'm particularly fond of. But also there were previous versions of the book that had probably too much hand-wringing about that and too much of my own inferiority complex. That was the hardest part. It was an emotional journey of acceptance for probably both of us.

If you're like me and have used your Glossier Stretch Concealer ($20) down to the last little bit in the pot, you're going to want to listen up. Here at Who What Wear HQ, we have a free table, and yes, it's as good as you might imagine. It's typically packed with treats, beauty products, clothing, and more, and it is a major perk of working for a fashion and beauty publication. Our free table also happens to be right next to my desk. While running in between press previews recently, I dropped a Glossier bag full of its newest product, G Suit, a little bit too close to the border between my desk and the free table. I'll let you guess what happened next: I came back to an empty Glossier bag, and the rest of my team had a bunch of new liquid lipsticks. (Don't worry—we were able to figure everything out.) 

All this shows how much our team truly loves everything Glossier does, to say the least. If you ask any Who What Wear editor what their beauty routine is, odds are they'll list at least one Glossier product as one of their staples. I myself typically have at least one Glossier product on my face, and more often than not, it's actually three or four. 

To be honest, I was a little hesitant about the new Glossier launch—a liquid lipstick—before I tried it. Didn't we leave liquid lipsticks and their drying, cakey formulas in 2016 with black chokers and tie tops? Not only that, but my relationship to lipstick has changed drastically since the pandemic. I used to wear a bold lip practically every day, but after over two years of mask-wearing and not leaving my apartment, my love for bold lips fell by the wayside. Lately, I've been gravitating toward glosses, oils, and tinted balms instead. 

I'd basically all but sworn off liquid lipsticks until Glossier G Suit came along. As a die-hard fan of the brand, I knew I had to at least try it. It only took one swipe, however, before I was totally hooked. Glossier G Suit is everything I've always wanted a liquid lipstick to be—it's comfortable, feels moisturizing, doesn't settle into lines, and, most importantly, does not make your lips feel like the Sahara Desert. The colors are blurring and easy to play with and have the most luxurious, velvety finish. 

Of course, none of that is by accident. "G Suit is not like the liquid lipsticks you know," says celebrity makeup artist Romy Soleimani. "G Suit has a creamy, semi-matte, whipped formula that stays a bit matte [but] doesn't dry down, so you never get that cakey feel. And there's a lot more playtime." With nine high-impact colors that work across all skin tones, it's definitely making major waves in the lip-product space. 

Since it doesn't dry down, it's also super easy to apply. "Just use the doe-foot applicator straight from the tube," says Soleimani. "The angled, pointy tip will give you the precision you need—almost like a liner. You can choose how you want your G Suit to look. You can press into it with the pad of your finger for a plush matte lip, straight out of the tube for a precise lip, or blur the edges with a small eye shadow brush."

My biggest qualm with liquid lipsticks has always been how drying they feel. I've never used a liquid lipstick that didn't make me immediately feel like I need to take a dollop of lip mask straight to the face. In this formula, rose wax silica gives lips a blurred effect, while orchid complex, black raspberry–seed oil, and shea butter help smooth and condition lips. 

The wear time is also impeccable. I wore the shade Shift to the Eras tour, and not only did it garner a slew of compliments from everyone I came across, but I also only had to reapply once throughout the entire night. Keep in mind that Taylor Swift's set is three hours long. As it wears, it also doesn't crack or cake but instead starts to give a more blurred French-girl vibe.

Essentially, Glossier G Suit is the lipstick that will make you want to wear lipstick again, especially if you, like me, lost your love for lipstick during the pandemic. Keep reading to see what every shade looks like on.

Curve is definitely the most everyday-friendly lipstick color for me. On my skin tone, it's a great pinky-nude that I could wear for just about any occasion. 

I was unsure about Drive when I saw it in the tube. It's described as a rich, warm brown, but it definitely leans maroon. It feels very Wednesday Addams in the best way possible. 

Warm pink is not my typical lipstick vibe. This pink, however, feels very approachable. It's not too pink, which is good for someone like me who typically shies away from the color. It's warm enough to be extremely wearable. 

When I think of red lipstick, I think of a shade like Jet. Jet is a true blue-toned red (which makes your teeth look whiter). It's the perfect Paris-girl red. 

Lane is a neutral, mauve-toned brown, and it's incredibly versatile—definitely a lip that can be easily taken from day to night. 

As I said, I never wear pink, and I particularly never wear bright pink, so Pilot was the scariest shade to try. It's a true "come on, Barbie—let's go party" shade of pink, but the fact that it's cool-toned makes it a touch more wearable, and it's surprisingly been one of my favorite shades. 

This burgundy red is an absolute dream. Since it's a touch deeper than true red, I was worried I wouldn't want to wear it, but it's turned out to be on heavy rotation for me. Leave it to Glossier to make a burgundy liquid lipstick so wearable. 

Jet might be a true red, but if I'm going for a red lip, my allegiances lie with Strike. This orange-leaning red is my favorite of the bunch. 

This reminds me of Glossier's Generation G in Jam, which has always been a go-to for me. It's a pink-leaning berry, and it's so flattering.

Back when I worked at a beauty counter, my most frequently requested product recommendation was probably for the best tinted moisturiser for mature skin types.

Most people, upon experiencing the changes that come with skin ageing—skin laxity, fine lines and hyperpigmentation—sought something lighter than natural-looking foundation and wanted a product with skincare benefits, but didn't want to compromise when it came to coverage.

What Does a Tinted Moisturiser Do?

Tinted moisturisers are essentially skincare/makeup hybrids. Indeed, the best tinted moisturisers will essentially act like skincare products, infusing your barrier with hydrating ingredients that help your complexion to appear healthy and radiant. "This is exactly why I'm such a fan of tinted moisturisers—they effectively pack in a load of skincare ingredients almost like a serum," says Young.

"The wonderful thing about tinted moisturisers is they’re more of a stained-glass skin effect, so you can see the skin through the product, and what that will do is allow you to go a little bit deeper in tone than you would with a foundation, and it will still look completely natural."

What's more, tinted moisturisers are so easy to apply—you don't even need a makeup brush because your fingertips will suffice as the formula is much lighter to work with. They're perfect for everyday wear, can be layered up if you do want or need a bit more coverage, and many of them may also come with the benefits of added sunscreen (although we always recommend applying a separate SPF for adequate protection).

Those with mature skin will often notice a slight loss in the skin's elasticity, leading to their complexion appearing more sagged compared to when they were younger. (Don't worry, a great skin-tightening cream can always help firm and steady!)

1. Lilac Liner

Bright, colourful eyeliner has long since been one of my favourite ways to express my makeup creativity—especially for summer. Paired with bronzed skin and a neutral lip, it really is *chef's kiss*. However, if the idea of using a coloured liner is not really within your comfort zone, take your cue from Ms Bieber and experiment with the trend using a muted shade, such as lilac or baby pink. This pale shimmering purple is super subtle but instantly eye brightening. 

Keep the rest of your makeup fairly muted and neutral to allow the liner to take centrestage—a tinted lip balm, just a touch of blusher and bronzer, and a clear brow gel are all you need to complete this look.

2. Draped Blush

It's official, 2023 really is the year of blusher—as proven here by Lizzo in a look that is all about the cheeks. You may have already heard of blush draping, a technique which sees blusher applied along the cheekbones rather than solely on the apples of the cheeks. I'm every bit as obsessed with Sofia Richie's honeymoon makeup as I was with her wedding makeup. This fresh-faced natural look is exactly what I'll be wearing on hot summer's days, because layers of foundation and concealer is not it. To achieve this no makeup-makeup look, a subtly tinted base, a dewy lip balm, clear brow gel, and cream blusher is all you need.

When it comes to glam, evening-appropriate makeup looks for summer, you can always count on the Kardashians for inspiration. I'm honestly obsessed with everything about this look—the lashes, the brows, the matte lip, the slicked back hair, and of course, the fun pop of orange pigment.

Again, this is a really great way to experiment with colourful makeup without needing a 16-pan eyeshadow palette and 15 different eyeshadow brushes. In fact it's so easy, you could even use your fingers to apply the pop of colour. Add lashes, a liquid lip, and a soft dusting of bronzer, and you're done.

I've lost count of how many images of Zoe Kravitz's eyeliner looks I've saved on Instagram—she gets it right, every single time. The secret to pulling off this look is a super sharp pencil eyeliner, applied with a tightlining technique so as to appear as soft and natural as possible. To tightline, you'll want to angle your liner upwards into your lashline, applying pigment in amongst the roots of your lashes rather than above them.

Ensure that your entire lashline is covered, then extend downwards a little in your inner corners and upwards in the outer. This look isn't about precision, so don't worry if your flick isn't perfect. Finish by using a precision smudging brush to soften the liner and blend out the cat-eye.

If summer could be summed up in one makeup look, it would be this one. Glowing skin, bronzed cheeks, and strategically placed highlighter really are the holy trifecta of summer makeup.

In the world of viral fragrances, few are very elusive. In fact, most of them are instantly recognizable to those who know what they're smelling. I can peg when someone walks into a room wearing fragrances like Maison Francis Kurkdjian's Baccarat Rouge 540 or Tom Ford's Lost Cherry, for instance. 

I'm personally all for a recognizable scent—most scents do end up smelling a bit different person-to-person based on their pheromones and body chemistries anyway. That being said, most fragrances aren't made with things like individual pH levels, pheromones, and skin types in mind. 

That's what makes Glossier You unique. Ever since it hit the scene, this fragrance has been a game changer in terms of how we think about the best fragrances. Its tagline is "the ultimate personal fragrance," and for good reason. 

The fragrance's key notes are pink pepper for a spicy bite at the top; iris for a powdery, green-leaning floral; ambrette seeds to add some warmth; and Ambrox for a base that's a little creamy, a little musky, and a little salty. Glossier You has been around for years, but with some recent interest on TikTok, I decided to revisit the fragrance. Since it's rumored to smell different on everyone, I recruited my friend group (read: forcefully sprayed perfume on them outside of a restaurant while we waited for our table to be ready) to see if it really does smell different on different people. I'll be honest with you. I've always prided myself on being a good judge of products that will make a difference in my lifestyle. It's always a plus when one of those products may also make a difference in my environment. In the past few years, the beauty industry has made notable strides toward taking environmental responsibility. More brands have begun to create clean beauty products that are fully refillable, reusable, and recyclable, cutting down waste and promoting a system that relies on the participation of their consumers to shift the narrative.

One of the brands that has done this especially well is Glossier, with the recent release of its natural, aluminum-free deodorant. It comes fully assembled with a reusable deodorant stick and case with clear instructions on how to make the best of your product (including switching out your finished deodorant stick for another without needing to toss the whole thing away). Whether consumers decide to fully participate in this effort is up to them, but it does feel good knowing that there are options to change our habits when it comes to shopping for products we use every day.

When I'm on the hunt for a deodorant, one of the biggest things I look for is longevity. What good is a deodorant that's aesthetically pleasing and smells good if it doesn't actually last? I'm sure a lot of people have had the experience of reapplying deodorant throughout the day to combat odor and perspiration. I can personally attest to the matter, as I'm always on the move, and unfortunately, I have a wardrobe that's at least 95% white and cream. That's right: Deodorant stains have no mercy on your gorgeous garments. That's where Glossier's Deodorant comes in.

While I'm definitely a fan of natural deodorants, I'm not expert. That's why I reached out to Rebecca Marcus, board-certified dermatologist and founder of Maei MD, for the scoop on what sets natural, aluminum-free deodorants like Glossier's apart from everyday antiperspirants. Marcus explains why aluminum is so widely used and why there's a sudden increase in products marketed as aluminum-free.

"Aluminum salts are the active ingredient in many antiperspirant deodorants. They work by blocking sweat glands and preventing sweat from leaving the body," begins Marcus. "This not only helps with sweating but also helps to control odor, as odor occurs when sweat mixes with bacteria and microorganisms on the skin." Marcus also dispels the false yet popular belief that aluminum is toxic to the body. While those with diminished kidney function may wish to avoid it, studies generally indicate aluminum as being safe for all others. 

So why make the switch from aluminum-based antiperspirants to natural ones? For one, your clothes won't suffer from pesky yellow stains caused by the ingredient. Deodorants that are aluminum-free function by masking odors with the use of fragrances and essential oil. In Glossier's case, the brand's deodorant is formulated with magnesium hydroxide and potato starch.

Marcus also breaks down how the two aforementioned ingredients function. Magnesium hydroxide alters the pH of the skin to produce an alkaline environment, one in which odor-creating bacteria can't thrive. Potato starch helps by absorbing sweat on the surface of the skin, keeping whoever gets their hands on Glossier's viral deodorant smelling and feeling fresh for hours on end. What's better than that?

Let's get into my experience with the product. I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to try Glossier's deodorant in each of the four fragrances it's available in (Unscented, Orange Blossom, Sandstone, and of course Glossier You) in its refillable sticks and deodorant cases. The first detail I noticed about these deodorants was how compact and minimalistic they were, which makes them easy for on-the-go use and a pretty addition to the other beauty products I use daily. The process of putting the refillable deodorant together was easy: Just pop the deodorant refill stick into the case, and then twist upward to pop the safety cap off.

Because I have already been using natural deodorants, my body quickly adjusted to Glossier's. I event felt confident enough to begin wearing the deodorant to my morning Pilates classes, making sure to try each scent to determine which I liked best. I'm happy to report that the deodorant kept me feeling clean and dry for every class I took and the entire day afterword. The formula really does melt into the skin, leaving no trace of its presence, just whichever scent I picked to get me through the day.

I also love that this deodorant is refillable, cutting back on the unneeded waste that contributes to environmental impact. Once you've purchased Glossier's deodorant (which comes with a refillable deodorant stick already in its recyclable and reusable case), you don't have to worry about making the same investment more than once. When you're ready for more deodorant, you just pop out the used stick and replace with another. Voilà! An easy system that benefits both you and the environment. 

If you keep an active lifestyle and love any and all products that keep you looking and feeling your best, I would highly recommend giving Glossier's Deodorant a try. I can't see myself going back to everyday antiperspirant anytime soon.

Reading the list of things that trigger my migraines is almost as exhausting as recovering from one. Sugary food, bright lights, my period, Super Noodles (yes, really), too much screen time, stress, and a lengthy list of perfumes. Ironically, my first ever job was as a sales assistant in the perfume department of Boots. The air was thick with a sickly and heady amalgamation of hundreds of scents combined, which would linger on my uniform and in my hair even after I’d left work. Needless to say, I ended up transferring to a makeup counter on the opposite side of the store as my sick days accumulated, and I find it hard to spend time in fragrance stores or to smell multiple perfumes in succession even now. 

Still, as a beauty editor, one of my favourite subjects to write about is fragrance, which can make things challenging to say the least. I recently posted on Instagram about the fact that the risky business of testing perfumes as a migraine sufferer is the only occupational hazard of my job, and I was surprised by the number of responses I received from my followers who also suffer fragrance-induced migraines. "It’s always been a struggle to find a perfume that didn’t trigger a migraine that lasts all day,” said one follower. "Only in the last year or so have I been able to wear fragrances.” Many messages were from people who said they’d had to give up on wearing perfume altogether. This got me thinking, why exactly do some perfumes trigger migraines while others are totally safe to wear? 

My knee-jerk reaction to this was of course to do what any self-respecting beauty editor would. I called in the experts to understand just why fragrance can be such a significant trigger for migraines and started to compile a list of "safe” and "risky” fragrances, tried and tested by me and the migraine sufferers in my DMs.

How does fragrance affect migraines?

"We have two trigeminal nerves on either side of the forehead, which link to the eyes, nose and mouth and certain scents can activate this nerve,” explains Sonia Garçon-Pichon, practitioner in olfactory therapy at Edeniste. "All humans have olfactive receptors, but our sensitivities can vary from person to person,’ she continues. "Migraines can be triggered by intense, concentrated smells, which are linked to an individual’s sensitivity.” Unfortunately this means that there’s no easy to way to figure out which fragrances cause an individuals’ migraines specifically without actually smelling them first. 

"There is not much definitive research around migraines and odour, but studies show that 25% to 50% of migraine sufferers have an increased sensitivity to odours during their headaches,” adds master perfumer Ruth Mastenbroek (who is a former migraine sufferer herself). "Your sinuses can be irritated by a single component of a smell that causes them to swell. Once swollen, the sinuses do not drain properly, and the resulting build-up of pressure can cause a headache,” she continues. 

On top of this, Garçon-Pichon adds that hormones can also trigger migraines. "This is more common for women especially, as changing hormone levels can influence your olfactive perceptions,” she says. For me personally, I’ve definitely noticed that my migraines are more likely to occur in the week after my period, so it’s useful to know that this is also connected to scent as it means I can stick to my "safe” perfumes during this time and avoid experimenting with anything new.

What’s the best way to find a new perfume as a migraine sufferer? 

"As a former migraine sufferer myself, I know it’s important to become aware of your own personal triggers across the senses,” says Mastenbroek. "From a fragrance perspective, start with individual note fragrances rather than complex ones, then as you build up a repertoire of ‘safe’ smells, you can branch out into the more adventurous and complex,” she adds. "Eventually you can build up a bank of fragrances that you can feel secure in.”

"I would also recommend not smelling scents too close to the nose, as the high concentration can trigger migraines,” says Garçon-Pichon. This is something echoed by the migraine-sufferers who reached out in my DMs. "A trick I also learned a few years ago to lessen my chance of getting a migraine is to spray either in my hairline or behind my hair,” says one follower. "This means it’s not too close to my nose, or I will spray it directly into my hair after styling it.”

"I also find that buying the perfume oil version of fragrance, rather than the eau de toilette or eau de parfum is much safer,” says another follower. "When I smell a perfume, I have to take a very small amount on my wrist and then spend the day wearing it. Usually, I know from the start when one will trigger a migraine, but sometimes I need to wear it for a few hours.”

What fragrances should migraine sufferers avoid?

For most of my life, I’ve had to be mindful of my diet, my environment, and my stress levels to keep my migraines at bay, but when it comes to fragrance, I’ve always found it hard to know exactly which types of fragrances to avoid. When discussing the subject with my followers, a common theme that a number of people raised was the increased likelihood of cheaper, synthetic fragrances triggering their migraines. I pose the question to Mastenbroek, who explains that a material that does feature regularly in cheaper fragrance is synthetic vanillin (not the vanillin molecule present in natural vanilla). "It is possible that migraine sufferers may have a lower tolerance for vanillin,” she explains. "Rose oil and Japanese cypress have also been mentioned, but with such complex ingredients, it is a huge challenge to understand the mechanisms involved.”

Above all, it’s evident that everyone’s triggers are likely to be slightly different. "Migraine triggers are so personal, so this will come down to an individual’s experiences,” explains Garçon-Pichon. "If you’ve experienced migraines in the past as a result of wearing a certain fragrance, then this perfume should obviously be avoided.” Mastenbroek agrees, saying, "The key must be to find exactly what triggers your migraine and avoid the types of fragrances that include those kind of notes,” she advises. "But since vanillin can be a common possible trigger, it could be good to avoid overtly sweet and gourmand scents at least until you find out if it is a definite trigger for you.”

Which fragrances are “safe” for migraine sufferers?

Both Garçon-Pichon and Mastenbroek agree that lighter scents are best for migraine sufferers. "Fragrances that have been created with a calming effect in mind, or that are using principles of aromatherapy, are likely to be soothing to the nose and not stimulate the receptors,” explains Mastenbroek. "The most sensible advice I would give is to be stick to citrus (orange, lemon, grapefruit, lemongrass), herbs (lavender, chamomile, rosemary, thyme) and mint notes (peppermint and spearmint). Based on aromatherapy knowledge we have, we can safely say these will not have an adverse effect on the majority of people including migraine sufferers.”

As a migraine sufferer, I know that paying a visit to a fragrance counter can be overwhelming, time-consuming and straight-up risky. However, I’ve spent enough years testing fragrances to have figured out the ones that are safe and the ones to avoid. Of course, as we now know, everyone has different triggers, so I’ve also drawn upon recommendations from the fragrance experts and from my fellow migraine sufferers.

There’s no doubt that putting together and maintaining a skincare routine can be an expensive habit, and when it comes to serums in particular, prices can be eye-watering. Serums contain high amounts of active ingredients and often have complex formulas that call for a lot of research and development, which is reflected in their )often high) prices. That said, as a beauty editor and esthetician, I’ve tried hundreds of serums, from luxury formulas like Estee Lauder’s Advanced Night Repair through to budget serum dupes from affordable brands such as The Ordinary, Beauty Pie, and The Inkey List, and I’m here to tell you that expensive doesn’t always equal best. 

"There is a perception that expensive skincare is always better than cheap skincare – and that’s not true at all,” agrees dermatologist Sonia Khorana. "Affordable options are often just as effective, as well as being kinder to your bank account. It is down to the ingredients that work for you and you can definitely find them in cheaper products too.” The key, she explains further, is to figure out which ingredients will cater to your skin’s specific needs. "Familiarise yourself with the ingredients in your favourite products so you can start to single out what works for you and see if those ingredients are present in some affordable products,” she recommends.

But why are some products so much cheaper than others? Product prices are dictated by things like quality of ingredients, packaging supply chains, research and development, and marketing costs. But by reducing marketing budgets, keeping packaging minimal, and utilising ingredients that are already tried, tested, and proven to work, brands can keep costs low and pass on the savings to you. "Some brands can also afford to sell their products at lower prices simply because they can afford to produce a large amount of stock,” says esthetician and skin expert Katie Onyejekwe. "It's always worth remembering that brands can position themselves as luxury and charge a fortune for what is a basic formula housed in fancy packaging with a large marketing budget, but it all comes down to formula at the end of the day.”

If you're a serious Olivia Rodrigo fan, I'm sure you now own at least one of the products from her killer collaboration with Glossier. It was the best gift the pop star could give to us beauty-obsessed peasant folk and I have to admit I was first to snag not one, but a handful of items. What I also wasn't expecting, though, was the second gift Rodrigo doled out.

She gave us a sneak peek inside her everyday makeup routine in a GRWM video on Glossier's YouTube channel, and, of course, being the beauty editor that I am, I immediately watched and took notes. She let us in on all the products she uses daily including her holy-grail foundation, concealer, bronzer, and more. Rodrigo keeps her routine refreshing simple, but still cute. I'd heard really great things about this foundation before trying it for this story and was even more intrigued once I found out it's Rodrigo's go-to. First, I loved the way it applied and blended. The formula is really creamy and it has a lot of slip to it. I used a brush to apply it and it just glided all over my face with so much ease. I was also pretty impressed with the coverage. I didn't use concealer on any spots this time to see how much I liked the coverage without it and this foundation definitely delivered.

I already had Rare Beauty's concealer handy and ready to be used for this story. Rodrigo uses this in a bit of a lighter shade, but I'm sure she loves the formula as much as I do since it's a daily staple for her. I'm also a fan of Rare Beauty's foundation. Both the foundation and concealer are really smooth and provide a really nice amount of coverage without being heavy or cakey. I used this on my under-eye area to cover up my dark circles. It's always so airy and never actually feels like I'm wearing concealer which is exactly what I look for in any formula. Obviously, I'll continue to use this one.

Rodrigo uses Glossier's Solar Paint in the shade Ray, and I have to say I'm totally obsessed. The above photo doesn't really do it justice, but it gives your skin such a natural, sun-kissed glow. Rodrigo keeps her everyday routine pretty simple, which I appreciate. She just dabs a bit of this onto her cheekbones and nose. It gives you what she calls a "perfectly tanned" look, and I totally agree. It also has a subtle shimmer to it that really has a chance to shine once you step outside.

I was really on the fence about this little eye shadow trio. The base shade wasn't impressive to me and it barely showed up on my lids, but I decided I'll keep using it for the shimmers. Rodrigo likes to swipe on a bit of the base shade onto her lids using her fingers and then follows with the shimmer shade on the right side of the mini palette. I did the same and really liked the finish of the metallic, sparkly hue, but I'm not sure it's something I'd wear every day. Purple eye shadow isn't usually my thing—it felt a bit harsh for my personal taste. I'll definitely give this another go when I have an event to go to.

I was excited to learn that Rodrigo shares my love for Brow Wiz. It's one of my all-time favorite brow pencils besides the Lawless Shape Up Soft Fill Eyebrow Pencil ($22). I don't think I need to say much here other than it's one of the best. I love how easy the pencil is to work with and it's really forgiving. I like to start slow and build out my brow using small strokes. It creates the perfect natural finish every time.

This mascara was just okay. The formula isn't the worst I've ever used, but I also don't think it did a ton for my lashes. I'll probably skip this one and use another formula in the future.

Rodrigo uses the clear Boy Brow gel, so I gave this one a spin. I also have to preface this by mentioning that I'm not usually huge on brow gels or waxes. The only one I really use is the Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Freeze occasionally. I tried this one out and it was nice, but I guess I just don't really prefer the look of a huge fluffy brow on myself. It did keep them in place, but I don't really see myself using it much in the future.

Rodrigo coined the name of this shade herself because—you guessed it—her sun sign is Pisces. It looks like this shade is now sold out, but you can still get it in a variety of other shades. I really liked the rich berry tone of it and the texture feels more like a chapstick than a lipstick. I do love it for an event or night out, but I don't think I'd wear this as part of my everyday makeup routine. This with the purple eye shadow just felt a bit harsh on my particular features.

I’ve spent more than half my life battling breakouts and have come a long way from where I started (acne-ridden teen) thanks to years of product trial and error and a career that helpfully allows me to pick the brains of skincare experts and dermatologists. But no matter how calm and clear my skin appears to be, it flares up once a month without fail, right before my period is due. "This is what’s referred to as hormonal acne, breakouts which commonly occur during a period of hormonal imbalance,” says consultant dermatologist Zainab Laftah. "This is typically seen when there is a surge in androgens (male hormones). Androgens stimulate the oil glands to produce more sebum, resulting in clogged pores and acne.” Androgens often flare up at puberty, during pregnancy, and with menopause, but they also affect skin on a monthly basis, too.

It’s incredibly frustrating if, like me, you’ve got your go-to skincare routine sussed out, you double-cleanse every night, never sleep in your makeup, and are in a committed relationship with at least five face masks. But the (hard) truth is that no skincare products will completely prevent hormonal breakouts from occurring, and there is no face mask that can predict the fluctuations of our hormones or spot treatment to stop spots before we see that telltale redness.

"Typically during a monthly cycle, there is a peak of the female sex hormones (oestrogen and progesterone) during ovulation,” explains Laftah. "Levels of both hormones rapidly fall in the absence of a fertilised egg, resulting in your period. Plus, prior to your period, levels of testosterone (a male hormone) increase, stimulating the sebaceous (oil) glands to produce more sebum, which leads to blocked pores and acne breakouts.” On top of this, our hormone fluctuations can also be impacted by additional factors, including stress, genetics, and lifestyle. "When someone experiences high levels of stress for a prolonged period of time, elevated stress hormones can drive breakout activity and suppress wound healing, meaning breakouts take longer to heal,” explains Victoria Evans, education manager at Dermalogica. "Stress breakouts typically occur along the jawline and on the neck and sometimes around the temples.”

Although it may not be possible to prevent the cause of hormonal breakouts, that doesn’t mean there aren’t tweaks you can make to your skincare routine to help target and combat them as soon as you feel them coming. By targeting the other factors that contribute to breakouts, such as a build-up of dead skin cells, bacteria or excess oil, it’s completely possible to reduce the severity of a flare-up. 1. Spot Treatments

Targeted spot treatments are designed to be applied to individual breakouts rather than all over. They’re typically the quickest way to take down a spot once you feel or see it appear. Both Laftah and Evans recommend looking out for spot treatments containing salicylic acid. "Salicylic acid is oil soluble thus able to penetrate deeply into the pores to breakdown bonds between the dead skin cells and oils,” explains Laftah. Out of the hundreds of spot treatments I’ve tried over the years, these are the most effective.

2. Face Masks

They may not be a daily staple in the same way a cleanser or sunscreen is, but face masks are one of the best ways to target both new and existing breakouts with fast-acting, hardworking ingredients. If you have acne-prone skin you’ll know that there is an overwhelming amount of face mask offerings on the market, so I’ve narrowed it down to my top four.

3. Exfoliants

"It can be helpful to track your cycle and understand the ebb and flow of your hormones, then record your symptoms, both physical, emotional, and your skin responses,” says Evans. "Once you know when in your cycle you see certain changes, you can adapt your regimen and lifestyle to pre-empt and reduce them, such as regular gentle exfoliation to keep skin clean and clear.” Acid-based chemical exfoliants will also help to fade pigmentation from leftover breakouts and will improve skin texture. But remember: Over-exfoliating can cause irritation. If you’re new to acids, start off using them once or twice a week, increasing usage when build-up occurs in the week before your period is due.

I know that some toners might seem like nothing more than bottles of fancy water, but this is not a category to overlook, especially if your breakouts are inflamed and painful. For me, the soothing ingredients and refreshing application of a face mist are always a welcome relief when my spots feel sore to touch.

One of the most important steps in any skincare routine, serums are the best opportunity you have to target your skin concerns with a tailored blend of potent ingredients. For both reducing and treating breakouts, Laftah recommends active ingredients like retinoids and salicylic acid.
