"It is a great honor to be joining the beautiful house of Givenchy. It is a jewel," Burton said in a statement at the time. The brand's latest launch with Kurkdjian? A concentrated reiteration of five famous scents from the La Collection Priveé Christian Dior Collection. These reimagined fragrances are bold, head-turning, compliment-inducing scents that radiate modern luxury. Although any of the five would be a great addition to your perfume collection, if we had to choose one, it would have to be Lucky Esprit de Parfum.

This pretty scent is inspired by the stems of lily of the valley that Christian Dior would sew into the hems of Haute Couture dresses or tuck into his pockets for good luck. It features fresh, delicate notes of the flower wrapped in a woody-leather accord that gives the floral opening impressive depth. "To me, it’s a crisp autumn walk in a bottle. Whenever I spritz this, I can practically feel the leaves crunching underneath my feet," says our junior beauty editor, Grace Lindsay.

4. BALMAIN CARBONE

One of the most exciting fragrance launches of the season has to be awarded to Balmain Beauty. The brand has just released a collection of eight all-gender fragrances called Les Éternels de Balmain, inspired by the brand’s Parisian legacy and creative director Olivier Rousteing’s modern influence. In 1947, Balmain revolutionized the fragrance world with the launch of the first iconic green scent, Vent Vert, and we do not doubt that Les Éternels de Balmain will carry the same legacy.

But not even the bottles could prepare us for just how exquisite these scents are. Although we could write an essay on each, from the minute we smelled them, we knew that Carbone would be our autumn fragrance of choice. This is the sort of scent that you want to wrap yourself in and never take off.

These days, new perfumes and niche fragrances from independent brands launch pretty much every week, but previously, luxury fragrances were strictly the business of pioneering and exclusive fashion houses, such as Dior. Much like today, these fragrances allowed consumers to buy into a small piece of the brand, which was particularly appealing if they didn't have the means to invest in a full high-end wardrobe. Fragrance, with all of its emotive connotations, offers us a chance to experience the very essence of these luxury designers with every spritz, on a more objectively accessible budget—an idea that remains very compelling to those who would like a slice of the lifestyle these brands signify.

Many fragrance icons, like Chanel's legendary No.5, were born in the 1920s. The first day I tested it, I could still smell the shimmering scent hours after spraying, like olfactory stardust suspended in the air.

3. CHRISTIAN DIOR LUCKY ESPIRIT DE PARFUM

When it comes to luxury French fashion houses, it doesn’t get much more iconic than Dior. The brand began creating fragrances in 1947, launching Miss Dior in the same year; a scent which remains a classic to this day. However, in 2021, the brand announced that Francis Kurkdjian (the very perfumer behind Baccarat Rouge 540) was to be the House's new perfume creation director—since then we’ve seen Kurkdjian reimagine some of the most iconic Dior fragrances.

The brand's latest launch with Kurkdjian? A concentrated reiteration of five famous scents from the La Collection Priveé Christian Dior Collection. These reimagined fragrances are bold, head-turning, compliment-inducing scents that radiate modern luxury. Although any of the five would be a great addition to your perfume collection, if we had to choose one, it would have to be Lucky Esprit de Parfum.

This pretty scent is inspired by the stems of lily of the valley that Christian Dior would sew into the hems of Haute Couture dresses or tuck into his pockets for good luck. When I was 19, I worked in a small clothing boutique that sold a surprisingly impressive designer assortment for a college town such as mine. When I was 19, I worked in a small clothing boutique that sold a surprisingly impressive assortment of designer items for a college town. On the ready-to-wear side, its racks were lined with Maryam Nassir Zadeh, Lauren Manoogian, and Samuji. And for denim, we exclusively sold Frame Denim, the brand every L.A. and NYC fashion girl wore at the time. I adored every pair from the brand and too often spent my entire paycheck on jeans. 

One pair, in particular, that I bought and subsequently wore roughly three times a week every summer for years was Frame's Le Skinny de Jeanne style in white. When I graduated and moved to New York, I left a ton of clothing items behind, donating most of them and selling the rest. Those jeans were one of the pieces I parted ways with, an act I now very much regret after spotting the exact same pair of jeans on none other than Meghan Markle. 

Markle was seen exiting an office in Montecito, California, wearing arguably the chicest, most luxurious outfit I've ever seen. It consisted of a camel-colored robe coat, a cream sweater, an Hermès shawl, Chanel slingbacks, and an oversize all-white Goyard tote. But even with all of that draped on her, the fashion item my eyes were immediately drawn to was her jeans, the same white Frame skinnies I owned in college. Envious, I immediately searched the internet for a pair to replace the ones I got rid of five years ago.

When Jemima Kirke agreed to document her trip to Paris Fashion Week exclusively for Who What Wear, we knew were in for some fun. The actor—whose latest project, the Apple TV+ drama series City on Fire, premieres May 12—is never one to take life, or fashion for that matter, too seriously. Arriving with a packed schedule that included stops at Givenchy, Paco Rabanne, Isabel Marant, Courrèges, and ACNE Studios in addition to a few soirées, Kirke capped off what has been a long but fruitful fashion month filled with jaw-dropping sartorial moments both on and off the runways. 

From taking epic selfies with her front-row partner Lisa Rinna to gushing over fellow actor Bel Powley and embracing sheer dressing, Kirke came, saw, and conquered PFW in the best way. Here's how she saw it…

A few weeks ago, I found myself hanging out with fellow fashion editors after work. For most, any after-hours activity with colleagues may be conducted over cocktails, but for us, it was spent doing what we know best—shopping. We spent the evening shuffling through the sparkling marble floors of Nordstrom's flagship store in New York City. While I hate to be biased because there are so many good Nordstrom locations worldwide, I have to say there's something particularly magical about the Manhattan store. Maybe it's because it has seven floors and six restaurants, or maybe it's because there's an entire floor dedicated to what I love most: designer shoes. 

Arriving on this floor in Nordstrom for a shoe fanatic is akin to arriving in paradise. Everywhere you look, there's something divine—just so many pairs of Fendi, Gucci, Prada, and Christian Louboutin shoes. While I only managed to stare at the shoes that evening, I did convince myself that I had to return and actually try on a few. So I decided to reach out to Nordstrom's team to ask them if I could document trying on some of the buzziest designer shoes of the moment in-store, and luckily for me, they obliged. Ahead, you'll find my full review of eight designer shoes, plus a roundup of the best affordable options at Nordstrom. But first, a little bit about why I chose the pairs I did…

While Nordstrom has a huge offering of footwear in-store and online, I knew for the purposes of this story I wanted to limit how many shoes I was trying on—consider it a preventive measure to protect my feet. I landed on shoes that created a lot of buzz when they first debuted on the runways, have been spotted on every influencer, or are set to become the next big thing. So without further ado, here are the shoes I tried on.

Fendi Cut Baguette Ankle Strap Pump 

My Rating: 4/5 Stars

My Review: The moment I spotted these ankle-strap pumps on Fendi's F/W 22 runways, I fell in love fast. While these shoes may not be the most viral shoes on this list, they were the pair I was most excited about trying on in person. What I loved about them initially was the thick block heel with the FF logo cutout, and seeing them in person reconfirmed my initial feelings. The craftsmanship of these heels made me audibly gasp when I opened the box. In terms of the fit, I tried on a size 8.5, which felt true to size, and the block heel made them feel comfortable overall.

My only advice for anyone considering buying these shoes would be to try them on in person if you can. While they were super comfortable for me, I can foresee that anyone with high arches or thicker ankles may find the top of the shoe or ankle strap slightly uncomfortable. But overall, this was such a fantastic pair of heels, and I will fantasize about them until further notice.

Givenchy G Lock Wedge Bootie

My Rating: 5/5 Stars

My Review: Another pair of shoes that haunt me? Givenchy's Shark Lock Boots. Not a day passes by when I don't either spot them on social media or spend an embarrassing amount of time staring at them. So when choosing another pair of shoes to try on at Nordstrom, I knew I wanted to try on a pair from the brand. Sadly, the exact style I wanted wasn't available, but the retailer did have Givenchy's G Lock Wedge Bootie in size 9. 

And while I wouldn't have gravitated to these ankle boots on my own accord (I'm more of a knee-high-boot type of gal), once I tried these on, I was ready to give away all my money. What I love about these shoes is the silhouette—how the wedge curves, how pointy it is, where it hits my calves… Plus, the hardware is just so cool. In terms of fit, I recommend going up at least half a size. Once I did, I found that these shoes felt like I was walking on clouds, and I didn't want to take them off. If you're going to give up your hard-earned coins for designer shoes, Givenchy's boots are well worth it.

Mach & Mach Crystal Double Bow Pointed Toe Mule

My Rating: 4/5 Stars

My Review: While Mach & Mach's Bow heels first became It shoes in 2020, they've still remained massively popular. One could say there's a lot of hype surrounding these shoes, so I knew I wanted to see if they lived up to it. Choosing one pair to try on in Nordstrom was a bit challenging, as there are so many style variations available—from pointed pump versions to platforms to mules. I landed on trying on a pair of mules, and since I'm a size 8.5, that limited my in-store colorway options. I wouldn't usually go for orange shoes, but once I put them on, I could not stop staring at them. I blame the sparkly bows. They're such beautiful shoes that it makes so much sense that they've become a cult item. 

After wearing them, I can safely tell you this: If you've been dreaming about buying them, you absolutely should. The joy I had just wearing them around Nordstrom for a few minutes will be nothing compared to what you'll feel. My only word of caution for you is that you should consider going up half a size, as the mules can be a little bit snug. If you have high arches or are easily irritated by backless shoes, you may want to opt for another version of Mach & Mach heels. Overall, these shoes can live up to your wildest fantasies. You have to take notes from Cinderella and find the pair that's the right color, silhouette, and size.

Versace Triple Strap Platform Pump

My Rating: 5/5 Stars

My Review: The resurgence of sky-high platforms would not be a thing if it weren't for Versace. The Italian fashion house's platform shoes have been spotted on the celeb set for months now. And while there are quite a few trendy styles from the brand, my favorite style is the triple-strap platform pumps. When I spotted Bella Hadid walking down the runway in these shoes for Versace's F/W 22 collection, I knew I had to try them on.

So you can understand, then, that I was pumped (pun intended) when the time came to actually put them on. Upon unwrapping the box, it was clear how well-made these shoes are. The red patent leather is so shiny and sleek, and the hardware felt durable compared to other strappy shoes. In terms of sizing, they definitely fit true to size. I tried on a size 9 (half a size larger than my standard size), and it was a bit roomy. Despite being a bit bigger than I'd prefer, the shoes were effortless to walk in thanks to the thick block heel and flat platform for support. It's safe to say Versace's platform heels rose above my expectations.

Saint Laurent Luz Pointed Toe Sandal

My Rating: 3.8/5 Stars

My Review: Crystal netting was everywhere last year, and footwear was not excluded. Saint Laurent's S/S 22 and F/W 22 collections featured everything from sparkly knee-high boots to open-toe sandals made from sparkly fishnet. The styles quickly caught the attention of the fashion set and have cemented themselves as relevant well into the rest of 2023. So I knew I had to try on one of the styles while at Nordstrom. Sadly, the boots weren't available, but Nordstrom did have the sandals in my size (8.5). 

I was initially dubious about these shoes because crystal-net shoes can be either wildly uncomfortable or make your feet look like a sausage trying to be stuffed into a casing. Luckily, that wasn't the case with these Saint Laurent sandals. The crystal mesh is appliquéd on top of a vamp strap, ensuring that your feet won't be irritated by the mesh. Once I got past my fears, I became obsessed with how flattering these shoes were. Of all the shoes I tried on, these felt the sultriest—call it the Saint Laurent effect. 

Of course, I'd be remiss if I didn't also inform readers about the fit. While I felt they fit my feet well and was obsessed with how they looked, I will say that these shoes aren't for the faint of heart. If you're not used to walking in taller stilettos, the arch of the shoe, how thin the heel is, and where the band hits on your foot may make them harder to walk in. But should you still want to take the plunge and buy a pair, I recommend a few hacks to make them more comfortable: size up by half a size, add in cushions for ball support, and wear them with socks around the house before you wear them out to make them feel a bit more worn-in. If you do this, these shoes will indeed become your favorite pair.

Bottega Veneta Wedge Pointed Toe Pump

My Rating: 4.5/5 Stars

My Review: Bottega Veneta has been behind some of the buzziest footwear of the past few seasons, and the recent appointment of Matthieu Blazy hasn't changed that. At the creative director's debut F/W 22 show, numerous pairs of shoes immediately went viral overnight. But the one style that's remained relevant is the Wedge Pointed Toe Pump. These shoes have been spotted on the likes of Dua Lipa and Lori Harvey and will continue to be relevant this year, as they were also a prominent part of the brand's S/S 23 collection. So it was a no-brainer that I had to try on these shoes. 

My first impression of them before putting them on was that they were so much chicer in person than in photos, as the leather was buttery soft, and the silhouette was so sleek. Regarding the sizing, I couldn't try them on in my size (8.5), so I tried them on in a 9. There was a gap in the back for me, but based on the fit, I could tell the sizing was pretty accurate. Despite being a bit big, they were still easy to walk around in thanks partly to the wedge heel and grips on the bottom of the shoes. Overall, I felt that these shoes had some of the structural elements for foot support out of all the pairs I tried, making them the ideal long-term investment. Now, if I can just secure them in my size, I'll be set.

Amina Muaddi Lupita Crystal Wedge Slide Sandal

My Rating: 3.8/5 Stars

My Review: Some of the coolest shoe trends of the past few seasons have found their strides first in the collections of Amina Muaddi (e.g., crystal, PVC, and glass heels). Since its inception in 2018, the brand has built a cult following that includes superstar fans like Rihanna. I've dreamt about owning a pair of shoes from this brand since it first gained notoriety, so I knew I had to slip into a pair while spending a few hours at Nordstrom. Choosing which pair to try on was hard, but with Barbiecore being so big last year and wedges continuing to trend, I figured I'd test-drive the Lupita Crystal Wedge Sandal. 

I tried on an 8.5 and wished I had chosen a size 9. I have incredibly high arches, so sometimes, bands across the top of my feet can be far too snug and cause blistering. When I put these on, I could tell instantly I would not last in them unless I sized up and used proper foot cushions. While the fit wasn't ideal, I will say that these shoes are so much prettier in person. Some crystal-covered shoes can look gauche, but these shoes are so sleek and are an elevated take on embellished footwear. If I were able to get the right size, I think I would have fallen in love with these shoes on sight. But because they felt a bit uncomfortable, I can see myself skipping on investing in this style and choosing another pair from Muaddi's collection to buy down the line. Of course, if you're swayed to get them and are blessed with smaller foot arches, then more power to you.

Prada Chocolate Metallic Loafer

My Rating: 4/5 Stars

My Review: Last but certainly not least, I figured I "should" be practical and try on at least one pair of flats. While there are so many noteworthy flat shoes at Nordstrom, I was immediately drawn to Prada's Chocolate Metallic Loafer. It's no secret that loafers have been trending for a while, and every version of Prada loafers (from chunky lug-sole iterations to classic ones) has gone viral. While there are so many different types of shoes I could have picked, I was drawn to the shiny finish on these ones, as metallics are all the rage right now. 

These Prada shoes come in silver and gold, and while I can get down with either finish, the sizing predetermined which pair I ended up fitting into. Like all loafers, the fit was a little snug. I had to size up from an 8.5 to a 9, and they're definitely the type of shoes that would need a bit of time to be broken in. Nevertheless, I still found that I was ready to walk out of Nordstrom in these shoes, literally. What I love about this pair is that they are the perfect balance of timeless and trendy. They're something you could buy today and pull out of storage years from now and know they're still stylish. And for me, that's the best indication of whether something is genuinely worth buying.

In Conclusion

I'm not going to be giving up my love for online shopping anytime soon. However, I will say that being able to try on designer shoes at Nordstrom was a game changer for me. It's one thing to see a pair of shoes every day online, but it's quite another thing to see them, touch them, and wear them in real life. Through this experience, I've realized that you can't honestly know if a designer piece is a worthwhile investment unless you have enough information and experience with said product.

We all can fantasize about the perfect pair of shoes, but until we've dared to put them on, we don't know if they truly fit our feet, our sartorial choices, and our budget. And in all honesty, trying on those shoes you've been pining after can be scary—you might find out they're a flop or fall in love. But no matter what happens, there are always plenty of other options out there (especially at Nordstrom), so you won't ever fall short.

Many of us associate the early noughties with the rise of the It bag, but in reality, the concept of the designer handbag as one of the more conspicuous status symbols was introduced many decades before. The iconic Hermès Birkin dates back to the 1980s, Chanel's 2.55 to 1955 and Gucci's Jackie to 1961. Tried and true, these classics remain untouchable today. But the difference was that in the Y2K era, these "must-have" bags—which, back then, were all bells and whistles—changed with the turn of each season. Although many an editor still shares a fondness for Mulberry's original Alexa or Chloé's instantly recognisable Paddington, even the wealthiest of the fashion elite began to tire of such an expensive, exhausting and wasteful cycle. What followed was an extended period of Phoebe Philo–led quiet luxury and the kind of understated leather goods that only those in the know would notice. Logos, hardware and fussy design features were out, and subtle, practical styles came in.

"Understated, relaxed items crafted with exceptional quality will always be important to the luxury client," says Sabrina Cannon, chief sales officer at Threads Styling. "Clients are definitely more considered in the way they shop. The spending power is still there, and investment in luxury is still big, but it's exactly that, an investment." And so, in 2023, we find ourselves in a zone where the best of both worlds can co-exist to great effect. Sure, you can seek out the most trend-driven handbags if you want, but there are plenty of timeless, easy styles to carry that still come with all of the pizzazz and wow of something fresh. 

From Saint Laurent to Celine, Cartier to Bottega Veneta, the new wave of key designer bags for spring 2023 is, in fact, full of styles that could last a lifetime and feel suitable for everyday wear. There is an ease that brands are aware they need to weave into the very DNA of these designs, and the bags are meant to work hard for the money. You should be able to use them without complication, with multiple outfits and for varying occasions. Most of all, these bags need to fit into your existing looks rather than compete against them. "Luxury consumers are increasingly opting to search for items that work with what they already own over buying something new or on-trend," explains Erica Wright, founder and CEO at Sourcewhere, the fashion-sourcing app used by countless industry people and A-listers.

Following a deep dive into the handbags that our audience has engaged most with across the luxury space, there are some clear themes at play. First, neutral hues are king, which perhaps comes as no surprise when we know that tan, black, brown and grey styles provide plenty of flexibility for combining with different looks. "Our customers have also been gravitating towards a more muted colour palette than in recent seasons favouring suede materials and soft, earthy tones such as browns, beiges and touches of khaki—a shift which was prevalent in A/W 23 pre-collections too," confirms Romilly Proctor, senior buyer at MATCHESFASHION.

Second, the chosen styles for readers to invest in are often anti-trend and made up of bona fide classics, like smart shoulder bags, simple leather totes or easy crossbody bags you can throw on every day—all are easy to carry in multiple ways with different-length straps and are roomy enough to fit in the essentials. Logos, clasps and details are at a minimum, with the occasional monogram creeping in in its subtlest form, such as a beige Gucci GG-woven canvas.

Gucci has no shortage of key styles: Marmont, Disco, Horsebit, Ophidia… I could be here all day. But one particular silhouette is perhaps the most important and coveted of them all: Jackie 1961. Originally created in, you guessed it, 1961 and inspired by Jackie Onassis, the Jackie was reintroduced back in 2020 when Alessandro Michele was first at the helm of Gucci's creative direction. The designer has now left the business, and the debut line from new appointment Sabato De Sarno will arrive in September. Whatever changes occur at the top, there's no denying that the Jackie will remain current and on the arms of fashion's leading lights. 

Jackie returns yet again in a subtly tweaked form for spring 2023: The bag still features the signature lock and curved-yet-structured cut, but you'll find different sizes and a variety of colours and finishes as well as adjustable straps so you can carry it as a neat shoulder bag or with a longer strap for a crossbody option. It's the small iteration in a hardy grain leather that appealed to our fashion team the most thanks to the fact it is deceptively capacious yet looks really smart, which makes it the perfect option for a diary packed full of different events. You can go one step smaller with a mini and also size up with a large, depending on your bag needs.

Loewe's Paseo—in both its jumbo and scaled-down forms—is a sure bet for the many fashion purists out there who favour minimalism above all else. Loewe and Creative Director Jonathan Anderson's schtick for cool handbags that stand the test of time is second to none. The Puzzle, first introduced in 2014, still makes hearts beat faster, as does the Flamenco, the Hammock and the Cushion… The list goes on. All feature design details that are complex, considered and incredibly complicated to reproduce (hence the very few "homages" you'll find to Loewe bags on the high street), and the Paseo is no exception. 

When translated from Spanish, paseo essentially means a leisurely stroll, something that one could do easily with this bag because it has been expertly crafted to be ultra lightweight despite its spacious dimensions. Made from super-supple nappa leather, the runway-featured bag comes in many a tempting hue, from burgundy and camel to pistachio and acid yellow, as well as versions that feature a detailed chain handle instead of the leather piped strap. My favourite? It's a tie between the Warm Desert pictured here and the Burgundy. I predict we'll see a lot of this delightful style over the coming fashion month period, but don't let that hype moment fool you: It will remain on the arms of fashion people for years to come.

Anthony Vaccarello's Saint Laurent continues its dominance over the industry as we get into the swing of 2023, influencing everything from the resurgence of maxi hemlines to the sudden desire many of us now have for an enormous quilted shopping tote—you can blame the celebrity-adored Icare, which is permanently sold out all over the globe, making it Lyst's hottest product of Q4 last year.

The Icare will undeniably continue to be popular this year, but I'd like to draw your attentions to another handbag style family at the fashion house that has the potential to provide you with a key style you'll wear on repeat for many seasons to come: Saint Laurent's Solferino range centres on sophisticated satchel styles in a variety of colours and finishes, including a range of quilted finishes that I think will be highly sought-after. Black-and-white versions play into the archive and offer something neutral without being too plain. The YSL lock features a little catch that requires you to rotate the letters away from the bottom corner of the L—it's a quirky detail to consider instead of a simple magnet fastening underneath the flap. 

Does Prada's Moon bag look familiar to you? Well, the eagled-eyed Miuccia superfans out there might recognise this style from 2002, when it was first created at the Italian fashion house. Following the success of Prada's other Re-edition pieces, such as the nylon bags that have been wildly popular over the last few years, there is yet more from the archive that feels right for today. But really, this has always been the magic of a Prada purchase—totally trend-less (despite the fact the brand basically sets the trends). You'll find that items from across the decades manage to feel relevant and work together.

The Moon is a bijou grab bag with a top handle, a slightly padded leather exterior, a chunky buckle and, of course, the signature ton-sur-ton triangle logo. It is smaller scale than many of the other designer styles featured here, but not everyone is into all-but-the-kitchen-sink totes. If you're the kind of person who likes to go about your day with only the bare necessities in tow, the Moon is a very enjoyable solution.

Although you will find shades such as black and tan, it's the offbeat hues that feel the most Prada, in my opinion, and they're worth exploring even if they feel out of your wheelhouse. For all the basic outfit formulas one can rely upon, a joyful bag in an unexpected colour will always add a layer of interest. We couldn't help but fall for this chartreuse—technically speaking, Citreon Green—leather iteration, and you'd be surprised by just how many other colours it works with. Expect to see this style all over fashion month and beyond.

Celine's Conti not only signals the return of the supersized tote but also the styling notion of carrying them in the crook of one's arm. For the S/S 23 collection, Creative, Artistic and Image Director Hedi Slimane flourished many of the models with a slick Conti toted in a way that was reminiscent of the noughties It-girl era. Walking to a Libertines track from 2004 and wearing the sort of relaxed bohemian outfits Kate Moss and Co. would've chosen at the time, the Conti was the perfect foil to a pared-back version of this era's wardrobe. 

But the Conti isn't all flashback and nostalgia. It also works for today. Considering just how useful they are in a handbag collection, there are few grown-up totes along these lines that have been given the attention and love they perhaps deserve from design houses. First up, the range of hues ticks all the bases: tan, black, chocolate suede and more. The interior contains multiple additional pockets so that the contents of your bag won't wildly rattle around. The belt fastening is functional rather than solely decorative, and it makes this roomy shopper a secure option for city folks. Although the leather is of the finest quality—it has been meticulously selected, don't you know—you shouldn't be afraid of the fact that eventually battering it in (as is de rigueur according to data from The RealReal via Coveteur) could make it an even more charming heirloom piece.

Bottega Veneta's Cassette bag was first introduced in 2019 as a modern, exaggerated take on the brand's signature Intrecciato weave and became a street style hit almost overnight. The rectangular crossbody satchel joined the brand's new-guard line-up as a permanent fixture alongside other key bag styles such as the Pouch, Mini Jodie and the Loop. All share some commonalities: sumptuous leathers, exciting hues and quirky details that set them apart from more affordable brands that simply cannot execute to this standard. 

What's new for the Cassette this season is its finish. The Cassette Foulard—aka the French word fashion people use for a silk scarf—indicates the interesting technique that has been applied to this bag's woven leather finish. What works so beautifully here is that the silhouette of the design is entirely classic, but the rendering is completely new and unusual. The Foulard, which has already been chosen by both Dua Lipa and Margot Robbie, comes in a range of more daring colours that you'd associate with the new era of the Italian fashion house, such as pool turquoise, avocado, a punchy sunburst orange and gold metallic. 

The Cassette Foulard is available in medium and small sizes, as well as a similar version that features a '90s-style top handle (rather than a crossbody strap) called the Brick Cassette.

Introducing Chloé's Edith for 2023, a re-edited, ultra-luxe version of the brand's popular equestrian-inspired handbag range. Under the creative lead of Gabriela Hearst, the new iteration is minimalistic in design, featuring a rectangular silhouette that is more structured than its previous, freer form. What does remain is the brand's signature top-stitching to add texture and interest to a clean handbag that could work seamlessly into many a professional's wardrobe.

Pictured here is the medium Mocha Brown tote version, which also features leather-wrapped handles (great for extra grip), a top buckle fastening for extra security and a detachable crossbody strap. It is big and roomy, ideal for someone who wants a smart style that can hold a work tablet, notepad or other daily must-haves, for example. Chloé's Edith range extends to this style but scaled down into a medium-sized zip-top version, a shoulder bag featuring a utilitarian pocket on the front, a cross-body pouch and even a collaboration with Barbour using the brand's signature wax-cotton fabric to create a laid-back kind of tote.

Cartier's edit of luxury leather goods is purposefully concise, comprising only a handful of precisely crafted, ultra-classic designs that will undoubtedly remain in the maison's collection for the foreseeable, therefore becoming iconic, collectable and well worth holding on to for the next generation. In that family, alongside the Panthère and the Guirlande, is the Double C de Cartier—an elegant selection of handbags, jewellery and more that puts the brand's serif-style monogram front and centre.

This particular pale-pink style is the Mini Model Shoulder—an elegant flap-front satchel that features an adjustable single strap, which can be doubled up to be worn as a shoulder bag. The enamel double-C clasp can be pinched at the two bottom corners to open up the middle parting and fastened back into place with a satisfying click. Unlike some other box bags on the bijou end of the spectrum, the interior has been carefully designed to feature three separate compartments, one flat pocket, one signature pocket and a removable mirror. What makes this exact version even more interesting is the use of two ever-so-slightly different shades of calf leather, lending the already graphic bag a 3D effect from different angles. The delightful coral, pictured here, will be available in March, but there are other similar options, such as the pink, that you can shop below.

Creative Director Matthew M. Williams's latest Givenchy line riffs on the biker-chic style favoured by Parisians, so it's not a surprise to find a useful everyday bag at the core of his message. We actually first spied the Voyou for A/W 22, but it was when Bella Hadid took to the runway wearing S/S 23's debut look—a denim bralette, maxi skirt and matchy-matchy denim Voyou—that things really stepped up a gear.

Adorning the Voyou is a smattering of hardware details that hark back to moto references, but what I really liked about this metalwork was that it is inclusive of both gold and silver in the same bag—meaning you can easily match this to your jewellery and/or watch without experiencing that clash that can so often come with accessories. As far as ease goes, thanks to its slouchy V-form; long, chuck-it-over-your-body straps; and the overlapping opening, this is perhaps the most casual of all the styles in this article. 

There is certainly a hint of the Y2K era with the Voyou (as there is across much of the It-bag landscape this year), but I think we can all agree this is a much chicer and more restrained take, especially when you opt in for simple hues such as black. Saying that, if you want something punchier, the Voyou also comes in hot pink, crackled silver, lime green and many more vibrant shades. 

Stars, they're just like us! Well, sort of. Actress Sadie Sink stepped out in a sensational pair of baggy jeans embroidered with pearls from top to bottom. Alright, the jeans are by Givenchy and sell for over $4000, but still, it's a great casual look, right? 

Paired with a white Givenchy top and bag, it's clear that Sink is stepping into the style spotlight (and, in this particular outfit, her Today Show segment) with ease thanks in part to help from her stylist, Molly Dickson. Dickson, who also works with stars like Sydney Sweeney and Mindy Kaling, has a knack for putting together head-to-toe outfits that are both inspirational and aspirational. So while we may not be grabbing Sink's pretty pair of Givenchy jeans off the rack right away, we'll definitely take some styling cues from this casual daytime look now that baggy jeans are officially back.

Here's a quick history lesson for you: The fanny pack was considered a wardrobe staple in the '80s until it fell out shortly thereafter. It's only in recent history that we've seen this style rebrand itself in the form of the belt bag. Y’all thought we were done with the royal weddings? Nope. This past decade blessed us with not one but two. And in that fashion, Meghan Markle also blessed us with this second controversial reception dress from Stella McCartney on her big day, along with the most fabulous guest list to ever attend a wedding. And while some questioned (and continue to question) Meghan’s style choices from that day on, for many, as they tuned in to watch the royal nuptials, they realized that for the first time they could see themselves reflected in a Dutchess and her personal style.

Chrissy Teigen is many things—boring is not one of them. Whether she’s spotted with her adorable babies or walking the red carpet next to her Instagram husband, this woman looks good without fail.

Honestly, what is life without Celine Dion? Do you know any other women who can pull off a Chanel spandex jumpsuit? That look aside, the Canadian musician has been in the spotlight since she was 18, but like wine, her style has only gotten better with time. Her ability to wear everything from spandex to gowns this past decade is proof that true style has no age.

At the end of the decade, we saw Lana Condor begin to establish herself as not only someone to watch on screen (with her popular Netflix film, To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before) but on the red carpet as well. Only time will tell how Condor’s style evolves, but from what we’ve seen thus far we’re placing heavy bets she’ll be defining the next decade of what it means to embody style too.

As you probably know, it’s no easy feat picking one iconic look from a legendary style icon. But maybe the look of all looks is the reboot of the deep-V Versace dress she originally wore to the 2000s Grammy Awards. Like J.Lo herself, this dress is timeless, ageless, and forever iconic.

The mystery is finally solved: Kensington Palace confirms that Meghan Markle’s beautiful wedding dress was designed by Clare Waight Keller of Givenchy. Other brands that had been suspected include Roland Mouret, who is a friend of Markle's and designed the dress she wore to her hotel last night; Ralph & Russo, who designed the dress Markle wore in her official engagement portraits; and Burberry, a quintessentially British brand.

1. Clare Waight Keller is the first female artistic director of Givenchy. While the brand is French, Keller herself is thoroughly British—she was born in England and went to school in London. She succeeded Riccardo Tisci, who moved on to Burberry, and she previously led the charge at Chloé.

2. “Waight Keller studied for her BA at Ravensbourne College of Art,” as Business of Fashion writes. “She gained her Masters in Fashion Knitwear at the Royal College of Art. Calvin Klein hired Waight Keller from university on the strength of her graduate collection.”

3. She has won numerous awards. “Waight Keller was honoured with the Scottish Fashion Award for Scottish Cashmere Designer of the Year in 2007; in 2016 she took home the Editor’s Choice of the Year accolade at the Elle Style Awards,” Business of Fashion reports.

4. Keller is 47 years old and was born in Birmingham, England, on 19 August 1970.

5. At Givenchy, “Her artistic directorship encompasses both men’s and women’s ready-to-wear and accessories collections; haute couture collections; the brand’s global image; and childrenswear and sunglasses lines,” says Business of Fashion.

Few people earn the kind of accolades in their career that the mere mention of their name carries decades of accomplishments, fame, and beauty attached. But that can be said of Hubert de Givenchy, who passed away this weekend at 91 years old, according to WWD and the brand’s official Instagram account.

The prevalence of the Givenchy brand today—famously also led by the likes of the late Alexander McQueen, John Galliano, Riccardo Tisci, and most recently Clare Waight—is the result of the designer’s years of work, beginning with an apprenticeship at a couture house at the age of 17 and later launching his eponymous label in 1952.

Of course, Givenchy is also the mastermind behind so many of Audrey Hepburn’s most iconic fashion moments in history. Her little black dress from Breakfast at Tiffany’s, the red gown with matching scarf worn in the Louvre in Funny Face, the lace masked ensembles in How to Steal a Million—these are but a few examples of Givenchy's work with the actress.

“Not only was he one of the most influential fashion figures of our time, whose legacy still influences modern day dressing, but he also was one of the chicest most charming men I have ever met," Waight said of Givenchy to WWD. This loss is felt immensely across the industry but it's undeniable that his legacy will endure forever.

Welcome to Runway Matters, where we're delivering notes straight from the runway so you can quickly digest the most important trends and noteworthy moments from the F/W 18 shows.

While some argue that first impressions are everything, we'll add that a designer's sophomore collection at a major fashion house is just as important. It tells us where the brand is going and how it will continue to relay its point of view. And Clare Waight Keller of Givenchy, who debuted her second ready-to-wear line for the brand in Paris yesterday, told us quite a lot about the future of fashion.

For starters, Keller—the brand's first female creative director in 65 years—packed her show with statement-making fuzzy coats but opted for a more environmentally friendly choice of faux fur. Beyond that, she laid on elements that felt refined and simultaneously rule-breaking—think tailored leather pieces, elegant maxi dresses with studs head-to-toe (and pockets!), and oversize bow details. The latter felt the most playful (and possibly nostalgic for anyone who sported oversize bows in elementary school) but was made more serious by way of a color palate consisting of just black and white and the absence of too much extra frill.

The Not-So-Real Deal: The Fur

While fur can be seen in spades in past Givenchy collections, this season Keller joined the likes of other brands who have opted out of creating fur pieces (including Gucci and Michael Kors) and showed big, bold toppers in faux fur. Additionally, the brand notes that it also used “ethically sourced sheepskin” in the collection as well.

The Shoe Style You’ll See Everywhere: Boots With Slack

Instead of a typical slouchy boot, the Givenchy runway featured tons of ankle boots with lots of slack in material. The fabrics wrapped around the leg loosely and folded over for a statement-making effect. In other words: Street style stars will love them.

The Childhood Trend You’ll Change Your Mind About: Bows

Anyone who watched last night’s Oscars knows that big look-at-me-bows are the stuff of red carpet magic (ask Nicole Kidman or Saoirse Ronan). I've done it. After lots of searching, plenty of air miles, and a few TSA headaches, I've found the perfect airport sneakers (and I'm never going back). While we've spent a lot of time mulling over what makes the ideal travel look—comfortable yet trendy, layered but not stuffy—discovering the ideal shoes was an accident. It turns out, my slip-on checkerboard vans, the shoes I'd recently adopted after a brief hiatus, were the perfect shoes for my jet-setting needs.

Earlier this month, I found myself pulling up to the airport in San Francisco, ready to head home to NYC after a quick wedding weekend. Having been forced to unforgivingly sit on my carry-on to make it close, I dragged it behind me, dreading the idea that I might be randomly selected by TSA for a full deep-dive into my vacation wardrobe.

As I went through the steps, winding my way through countless stanchions, I arrived at the metal detector and, in an exciting twist of events, I found myself easily sliding off my sneakers, tossing them into a bin, and quietly treading my way through the checkpoint. Slipping my shoes on once the whole ordeal had ended took all of 15 seconds, and I was on my way once again. The model was spotted this week in a light-wash Misbhv jacket and similarly washed wide-leg jeans with just a hint of a flare. Opting for a Canadian tuxedo in the first place is stylish in and of itself, but adding in a more fashion-forward denim shape pushes the limits in the best way possible. Plus, Hadid chose to pair her double-denim look with a crop top and Givenchy heeled booties, ensuring her figure didn't get lost in the oversize silhouettes. All in all, she made some very smart choices to help her pull off both trends at once.

Model of the moment Gigi Hadid took a break from walking down the runway to spectate with boyfriend Zayn Malik at the Givenchy show at Paris Fashion Week. The couple posed for the cameras, and of course Gigi looked effortlessly stylish in a high-neck printed top from the brand with a white denim jacket tied around her waist—but for us, all eyes were on her footwear.

At first glance, Gigi appears to be wearing nondescript brown pumps, but upon closer inspection, we can see the contrasting shades of her knee-high boots. The monochromatic shades give a whole new meaning to a fall-friendly statement shoe. That wasn't the only optical illusion the Givenchy boots had us seeing—the leather boots feature a multi-colored prism style heel, giving the architectural feature an alluring pop of color.

Think you've seen it all when it comes to designer collaborations? The upcoming Givenchy for Nike collection just might change your mind. 

Vogue photographed Joan Smalls and rapper Travis Scott in the wares, which won't be available until July. But from what we can tell so far, it's going to be a home run. “The shapes are all brand new,” Givenchy artistic director Riccardo Tisci told the Financial Times. “They’re all Riccardo Tisci shapes. The purpose was to bring a new volume, a new concept to the sports industry, but respecting the functionality and performance of Nike.” If the massive popularity of both brands is any indication, we have a feeling this collaboration will sell out in record-breaking time.
