Actress Caitriona Balfe’s path to stardom hasn’t exactly been what you’d call traditional. While packing bags for a local charity in her native Ireland, she was scouted by a modeling agent and then made her way to Paris at 19, where she began a modeling career that touched all the major fashion houses. Fact: There's nothing worse than boots that are too small. Whether the last size available was a bit too snug or your favorite pair no longer fits the way they used to, some sort of fix is necessary. Stretching leather boots might seem like a difficult feat, but in reality, there are simple steps to be taken to make your boots wearable for years to come.

So what's the trick to stretching leather? We talked to David Mesquita, vice president at Leather Spa, to find out. According to Mesquita, there are two routes you can take. First and foremost, you can always just drop off your leather boots at a local shoe-repair business where they will use a shoe-stretching machine. However, if you're feeling up to the challenge, there's a three-step at-home method that's certainly worth a try.

Read on to learn how to stretch your leather boots in only three steps, according to an expert.

1. Use a shoe-stretching liquid to break in boots.

It's possible that all your leather boots need are a good breaking in. According to David, shoe-stretching liquid "helps to soften the material." While the material is wet, wear the boots around to break them in. One trick to ensure the exterior of your boots aren't damaged is to only spray the interior of the boots.

2. Try wooden stretchers combined with stretch spray.

If stretch spray alone doesn't do the trick, the next step is to combine the stretch spray with a shoe-stretcher tool. According to David, opt for a wooden shoe stretcher. In his experience they're proven to be stronger and more durable.

3. Leave stretchers in overnight.

Not only does leaving the stretching liquid and boot-stretchers in overnight give them time to work their magic, but the experts say it's actually best to try on your shoes in the morning. If the size still isn't to your liking, try the process again, adding a bit more pressure on the stretcher.

There are certain fashion rules that we think should be broken. And one at the top of our list is any limit on wearing white. In our book, wearing white year-round is 100% okay. In fact, all-white outfits are one of the chicest iterations of monochrome dressing. We’ve noticed that fashion girls on the street style scene are huge fans of the look and have a few styling tricks up their sleeves to make it work.

First, try choosing pieces with different textures. If you’re wearing solid-white trousers, try pairing them with a sheer blouse. Next, layer different shades of white. And that's a wrap: The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have concluded their whirlwind five-day tour of Poland and Germany. One of the highlights of the tour, of course, was their adorable travel partners, Princess Charlotte and Prince George, but Kate Middleton's outfits stole the show (as per usual). The newspaper explains the significance: "Berlin Blue, or Prussian Blue, is a pigment that was first developed in Berlin in the early 18th Century, and became the lead colour for the Prussian Army and for other German military uniforms up until the First World War when grey became the staple."

Plus, there's even a second possible meaning behind the hue. You know those suede shoes you bought last summer? You wear them with everything from vintage Levi’s to floral summer dresses, and they have the scuff marks to prove it. But figuring out how to clean suede is a bit of a challenge. Unlike more forgiving materials like leather, it’s not as easy as wiping them off with a damp cloth.

For some professional tips, we turned to the experts at Fast and Best Shoe Repair, who shared their top tricks for cleaning suede the right way. They’re pros at all types of shoe repairs, but they were kind enough to also tell us how to take care of our shoes at home. There are a few different methods they recommend, but one of them involves a $0 trick using an item you probably already have in your house. TIP 1

The top tip the experts recommended would be to get your shoes protected with a water and stain protection spray before wearing them so the suede can keep its vibrancy and freshness.

TIP 2

In addition to protecting your shoes, Cadillac Suede Renew works really well to clean and refresh suede in three easy steps. First, brush the suede shoes to clean and surface dirt. Second, apply the spray, making sure it covers the whole shoe and let it dry for 15 to 20 minutes. Third, brush the suede again to bring back the hair, and you’re done.

TIP 3

If the shoes are really dirty, your best option is to either bring it to a trusted cobbler for repairs or you can pick up Angelus Angelus Easy Cleaner ($8). Pour 1/4 of the contents of the bottle into a bowl. Dip a nylon brush into the bowl, and start cleaning the shoes. Make sure to always brush toward the outside so you don’t leave any dirt behind. Once you completely wash the shoes, leave them to dry overnight. When the suede is dry, it will feel hard and stiff, so you will need to use a metallic brush to brush back the suede and make it soft again.

TIP 4

The last expert tip is to always have a nylon or soft brush in the house. Light water stains and dirt can be easily brushed out, and it doesn’t have to be complicated (plus, it doesn’t cost a thing!).

While we all know exactly what spring racing is and what we should wear, the polo has been a bit more of an enigma in Australia—but it’s becoming an event on the social calendar that can’t be ignored (or missed). Ahead of the Jeep Portsea Polo in Victoria this weekend (AKA an opportunity to dress up in your finest and be fancy), we asked Anna Bamford—face of the 2016 Jeep Portsea Polo Marquee—to select her top 14 shoes to wear to the polo and how she approaches the fashions.

“Polo is all about an effortless summery look. I think it is a chance to have some fun and be creative with a daytime outfit. The polo is more of a casual event, but it’s always great to add a little extra to your look with a great pair of shoes, a hat or bag.”

So after wandering through every single NEXT, Zara, Topshop, River Island, H&M and Selfridges, I can safely say that next season, we will be inundated with all things velvet. We’re obviously about to hit high temps back at home, but I couldn’t resist leaving without picking up this slinky velvet camisole from J Brand at Selfridges. Ah, every woman's constant plea: that she may own and wear a pair of high heels that don't absolutely murder her feet and make her life miserable. We've done our best to help provide you with tips to wearing high heels without pain, but sometimes an expert must be brought in.

We asked our resident stylist Marissa Webb to share her pro tips for making heels as comfortable as they can be, and she had some dynamite wisdom to disperse. 

"Your favorite heels might look great, but if you can't walk in them, it really takes all the fun and beauty out of them," Webb astutely observes. "Some tricks I've learned over time have saved me on countless occasions."

If you have to choose between a pair that's slightly snug or slightly loose, go with loose; you can always pad them, but hoping they will stretch out usually ends in disappointment.

Every heel doesn't need to be 4-plus inches tall. I love a kitten heel, and they're almost like wearing flats; they don't put as much pressure on the ball of your foot, which is often the source of discomfort.

Take breaks from pointed-toe heels. Rotate between a round toe, open toe, and pointed toe. Sure, pointy might look great, but it certainly won't help your toes. Especially the poor pinky!

Even if you think you're in your most comfortable heels, be prepared if it's going to be a long day or night. A combination of padding the footbed and cotton balls stuffed in the toes is my ultimate solution.

My favorite trick is cotton balls. I figured this out at a hotel one night, when I couldn't find heel pads and one my right shoe kept flopping off. Stuff the cotton balls into the toe of your shoe until the fit is right. Keep a few extra in your purse for just such an occasion.

No matter what else you do, do not wait to break in your brand new heels at that special event you picked them out for. You haven't developed a relationship with the shoes yet, and you don't want to spoil the night by finding out too late that your heels have a mean side. Wear them at least once before the event so you know how to prep them properly.

One of the biggest challenges we ladies face with summer style is taking our favourite casual daytime looks into the evening.
