I’ve always been a city girl. I was born in Kuala Lumpur, grew up in Houston, and upon moving to L.A., lived comfortably east of the 405 for years. But a California hazard they don’t warn you about is that you might meet a cute surfer who eventually lures you all the way west. After some cajoling, I gave in to my inner Pisces, packed up my gray Tabby, and moved us across town to the sun-dappled, salty-aired streets of Venice Beach.

It’s been six years since, and while I may not yet be a bona fide beach babe (I still prefer reading on the sand to roaring waves), it’s home. My hair is blonder, my mornings slower, and I love the neighborhood's walkability and proximity to the Pacific Ocean. Every time I catch another glorious pink sunset, it does feel a little like living in a fantasy.

Denim and comfy shoes reign supreme, and a knit is a must to combat the almost-always-present marine layer. Most of my bolder pieces have been relegated to the back of my closet, awaiting invites for martinis at Tower Bar, dancing at A Club Called Rhonda, and too much pasta at Little Dom's. So while my highlights may not be low-maintenance, my approach to daily dressing is.

JEANS + EASY COAT + WESTERN BOOT

My daily trifecta. It may be the beach, but it ain't cocktails and bikinis everyday. Venice can get downright chilly thanks to miss marine layer often overstaying her welcome. The key is layering: a tank for when the sun comes out, trusty broken-in denim, comfy-enough-to-walk-in cowboy boots (you can take the girl out of Texas), and a great statement coat to cinch the look.

SWEATER + SLIP DRESS + SLIP-ONS

Date night, happy hour, or girls' dinner, this is my go-to outfit. I love the feel of a slinky, figure-skimming slip. (I'm partial to ultra short or ankle-grazing.) Having a sweater on hand both ensures I'm cozy and adds dimension to the look. Because I finally learned how to ride a bike recently (no, I will not be taking questions at this time), a comfy closed-toe shoe guarantees I can pedal, walk, or if the night drags on, dance comfortably.

THE DIANA LOOK

Aka my "running errands" look. I could be on my way to a workout (but am probably just running to the Erehwon hot bar). It's sporty but polished, and if it was good enough for a princess, it's good enough for me!

Earlier this November, I felt downright giddy when I realized my Australia trip was right around the corner. A sunny reprieve in the middle of winter (okay, I live in California, but still)? Yes, please!

I was so blinded by my own sunny outlook that I chose to ignore my Australian relatives' warnings. November, they warned me, was more akin to spring, and rain was far likelier than beach days. "Totally," I agreed as I spread bikinis out on my bed.

Here's the cold, hard truth: Melbourne is chilly. Weather-wise, it's got the moody marine layer of San Francisco with a healthy dash of Seattle fog. It's a gorgeous city but a gray city nonetheless! Your girl was freezing, her dreams of returning stateside a sun-kissed goddess dashed. Ever the optimist and buoyed by a daily diet of piping-hot meat pies, I chose to look on the bright side. I was 11 hours ahead of home, putting me in the unique position of living in the future, baby! With newfound zeal, I hit the streets, credit card at ready and a keen eagle eye trained on what the cool Melbourne girls were wearing. 

A GREAT PAIR OF SUNGLASSES

Due to its geographical location, the sun in Australia is no joke. While this meant I got to stock up on some excellent sunscreen (local beauty brands are my favorite souvenirs), it also meant I never went outside without my shades on me. Even on the foggiest Melbourne day, Australians are prudent about their UV protection, meaning a cool array of sunnies is spotted all over the city.

FLORALS? FOR SPRING?

Forgive me for that Devil Wears Prada reference. I'm only human. Floral prints reigned supreme, and I noticed a wide and gorgeous array of brightly colored sundresses on my daily strolls. The women in Melbourne looked like hothouse flowers, draped in structured, flared, and layered numbers that easily took them from day to night.

Melbourne is a walking city full of beautiful architecture and great public transportation. A pair of lug-soled booties I packed at the last minute was my daily go-to, and I blended right in among the sea of ankle boots.

Did I mention the weather wasn't great? I'd been warned Melbourne is a "four seasons daily" sort of city and that packing a light layer is de rigueur. I spotted lots of great lightweight trenches and oversize but polished denim jackets.

Next Up: The Winter 2023/2024 Fashion Trends That Really Matter

As we wandered the streets during London Fashion Week there were a few recurring trends that we couldn't help but take note of. We spotted a strong affection for trench coats, an enduring love of leather and a downright obsession with Ganni's Buckle Ballet Flats. Riffing off the ballet flats and pointed shoes trends that took off during the summer months, Ganni's flats reached cult status towards the end of summer, merging the season's hottest shoe trends whilst injecting that Scandi twist we love so much.

Ganni's flats also incorporate a seasonal microtrend: buckle detailing. Cropping up all around us, buckle-adorned shoes have been a notable feature since Miu Miu debuted its buckle slingbacks at its A/W 23 runway show. Buckles will remain a key trend as we move towards the winter months, transitioning onto boots when we need to keep our feet warm. Next Up: The Autumn/Winter 2023 Fashion Trends That Really Matter

Of all the sources of fashion inspiration at our fingertips, runway looks are often the most intimidating to re-create. The fantastical designs aren't always made for real life, but allow Copenhagen Fashion Week to change your opinion on that. While there were plenty of daring, experimental trends on the spring/summer 2024 runways, I also noticed a plethora of realistic styling tricks that are extremely easy to copy.

See? I told you these styling tricks were easy to copy. If you don't already own a pair of tall black socks, Calzedonia's Knee-Highs are just $5 and look strikingly similar to the versions seen at Rotate (top left) and Ganni (top right). 5. Give 'Em the Cold Shoulder

Go and brush your shoulders off. This season, Copenhagen designers nonchalantly styled cardigans, sweaters, and dresses slightly askew, resulting in a laidback look I love. The exposed-shoulder trend was featured in many runway shows, including 7 Days Active (top left), Baum und Pferdgarten (top right), Paolina Russo (bottom right), and A. Roege Hove (bottom left).

Off the back of Copenhagen Fashion Week, our attention has pivoted to all things Scandi. Ingrained with an appreciation for exquisite tailoring, the Scandi set know a thing or two about getting dressed. Whilst we saw a sea of elevated neutrals up and down the streets of Copenhagen, brands took a bolder approach on the runways. Ganni's collection saw wearable items in deep, rich tones peppered throughout. Playing with a multitude of materials, the show drew inspiration from the rapid AI developments and their yet-uncertain impact on the world.

Owing to this, the collection contained a collaboration with AI artist Cecilie Waagner Falkenstrøm, amongst others. Another notable collaboration seen on the runway, which is due for release on Wednesday, was the Ganni x New Balance collab. Three pairs of trainers will be released as part of the highly anticipated collaboration, and the chunky yellow pair is already at the top of my wish list.

Whilst we anticipate the arrival of the S/S 24 collection in-store, Ganni's current offerings remain as tempting as ever. 

Ganni has long offered excellent knitwear options. Unafraid to experiment with colour and texture, boldness has always paid off for the brand. A favourite in the Who What Wear UK office, we can't get enough of Ganni's perfect sweater vests. And it would seem the rest of the UK is with us; following the brand's show in Copenhagen last week, searches for this specific item on Google are up more than 100%.

Perhaps it's no wonder with our current climate. Utterly ideal for in-between weather, the sweater vest looks excellent layered over a billowy dress or paired with blue denim. The brand's dedication to the sweater vest has been unwavering over the past few years, and it have continued to iterate on the theme season after season.

Style Notes: New-season trends are exciting, but I always need to find a way for them to work in my everyday wardrobe for them to be worth it. This is another outfit from Mango and shows how Y2K trends such as cargo pants can have a grown-up spin, too.

Style Notes: A denim trench is an easy new-season buy and a great transitional alternative to classic colourways such as beige and khaki.

Style Notes: When this dress first appeared on the Zara website I signed up immediately for notifications of when it would be going live. This strapless bandeau can be layered with a cardi and knee-high boots right now or worn with strappy sandals in the evening.

Style Notes: Meet the Jozeys, Ganni's must-have wide-leg jeans. Now, I needed a larger size so they would be longer in the leg and a tad slouchier, however, they were unavailable. I tried on my normal size instead to give you the gist! I styled them with Ganni's signature sculpted blazer to juxtapose the casual wash. Simply add on a pair of heels and you have an easy day-to-night denim look.

The actress and mother of two showed off her long legs in a gorgeous Ganni blazer paired with sheer black tights and the most perfect pointy-toe pumps. Although I love fashion, I often find myself sticking to the same few pairs of shoes. I was (fashionably) late to the jeans party. My first foray into pants was experimenting with my mom’s old stirrup leggings, but beyond that, dresses and skirts were strictly my jam. Anything with separate legs felt restrictive and as far as hemlines were concerned, the shorter the better. 

That all changed when I discovered vintage in high school. Turned on to the "joy of the hunt” by a friend, I became obsessed with the adrenaline rush of discovering one-of-a-kind pieces. My previous grievances against pants were quickly forgotten when I fell for a pair of perfectly worn-in Levi’s. This was holy grail denim: buttery soft, slightly androgynous, and in the most perfect sky blue wash. I was hooked, and my repertoire expanded quickly: frayed cutoffs in lieu of miniskirts, indigo bootcut jeans over slip dresses. My sweaters were set aside in favor of oversized, distressed denim jackets. I’d turned into a true blue-jean baby. 

Denim still factors heavily in my closet. I’m in jeans almost every day. Recently, I crossed over to the dark side. Black jeans create a totally different look, and I was keen to switch things up. Revamping my denim drawer made me feel like I was in high school again, chasing a high through different cuts and washes. They say fairytales can leave a lasting impression on kids. For me, it was Cinderella. Here was this poor girl who hustled away. Her only friends the literal rodents in her house. She finally gets an invite to the hottest soirée in town, gets all dolled up, and then LOSES her incredible heels (borrowed, no less) after only one wear! Needless to say, I’ve been a shoe gal since. Any time we went away on a family vacation, my dad would grumble and say, "Do you really need that many shoes? It felt silly, and we were nothing if not practical. 

That practically has evolved since. I still adore a vertiginous heel every now and then, but after a few hard-learned lessons (almost destroying my ankle on some Parisian cobblestone, for one), I’m looking for function alongside fun. Don’t get me wrong; I’m not totally above buying eye-candy shoes; it's just that they should feel as sweet on my soles—like the ones I’ve listed below.

Lean in a little closer. I have a secret to share: I've been rinsing and repeating the same pair of black Chloé ankle boots for seven years now, and I'm not planning on stopping anytime soon. They’re my emotional support boots. Facing a long day on set? The boots are packed. Need a little height boost but not feeling a heel? She’s strapping on the boots. Going on vacation?
