Okay, I must admit—in my long love affair with denim, H&M was a brand I always overlooked. But when I realised nearly every one of my (very stylish) colleagues owned a pair of H&M jeans, I knew it was time to investigate. I pulled a few styles from the racks, but this wide-leg pair instantly stood out.

From the moment I slipped them on, I was sold. The fit is spot on: relaxed but not sloppy, with a wide-leg silhouette that feels modern and effortless. The denim has just the right amount of structure, and the light wash gives them a premium edge that could easily pass for designer. It’s no wonder the fashion crowd swears by them—these are the kind of jeans I'll wear on repeat, and no one would ever guess they’re high street.

While I love Reformation for its cashmere, I had never tried a pair of Ref jeans before this denim try-on. Suffice to say, I was pleasantly surprised. In Manhattan, nobody cares what you wear. To be quite honest, nobody really notices anything; someone can be walking on their hands in a green tutu through Washington Square Park, and no one looks twice. At a certain point, we all become immune to the varied fashion and personalities that walk the streets around us. While this is a luxury most of the time, like when I’m hungover at the bagel shop and look rather, well, disheveled, sometimes you want people to notice your outfits. I get kind of sad when I spend 40 minutes putting a look together and no one gives a second glance. And yet, whenever I wear this one thing, I always get compliments, and that’s denim.

Whether it be a Canadian tuxedo I stroll into work in, my denim Golden Goose sneakers I wear with just about everything, or a deep-wash jean dress, people always say something. I don’t mean this in a conceited way; it’s honestly just something about the denim that gets people talking. And in New York City, talking can get you pretty far. Plus, sometimes, in one of the biggest cities in the world, it can be lonely. And sometimes, with just one conversation, even if it is just about denim sneakers, you start to feel a little less lonely.

I never buy anything full-price. Okay, maybe not never, but it’s definitely a rarity since every time I do buy something full-price, it goes on sale. I bought a white cinched-waist dress a few months ago—now it’s 40% off. Cropped Re/Done T-shirt—now 60% off. Frayed jeans—now 15% off. And thus I have sworn to myself that from now on, I only buy on sale.

Occasionally, this rule gets broken, but only when it’s something I need in a timely manner or from a brand I know for a fact never gets marked down. This rule has saved me countless times (and countless dollars), but I would say it is most pertinent when it comes to basics. The second I see one of my favorite basics go on sale, I buy it. Whether I need it or not, I know I am going to wear it, it’s never going out of style, and there are at least 15 ways to wear it. Ever since I started abiding by this rule, my closet is full of staples that were absolute steals. 

After doing a bit of winter cleaning, I finally had some room in my tiny closet for a few more basics. So after some thorough research, I found myself refreshing my tracking info about 153 times to see the status of all my packages. My mom discovered a fashion trend without even trying. In anticipation of Chicago’s winter, my mom and I always go coat shopping together to try to find her a new warm jacket. We tear up Michigan Avenue, going from store to store in 15-minute increments. The same thing happens in every store: I pull out funky bombers and cropped puffers, my mom shakes her head no, and she reaches for a knee-length jacket.

"Come on, Mom. Why not this one?” I’ll say, holding out a leather bomber that I secretly hope she likes so I can "borrow” it from her closet.

She informs me for the 97th time that she will not wear any jacket that does not fully cover her butt. I remind her of her great physique, which is perhaps due to weekly pilates and five-mile runs every day. In turn, she tells me that’s not the point and to not push it. "I’ll wear a short coat the same day you wear a long one,” is her final word on the matter.

In my defense, I tried wearing long coats. But every long puffer made me feel like an elongated walking marshmallow, every trench coat made me feel like a lurking private investigator, and every wool overcoat made me feel like I was trapped in a blanket. Then one night, as I was putting on my favorite leather jacket to go out, it hit me: long leather jackets.

While I still may not understand my mom’s no-short-coats rule, I will say that I can get behind her long-coat look. Long leather coats are the ideal jacket for winter. They’re sleek, subtle, and have just the right amount of shape. The leather isn’t too heavy, and the extra length adds plenty of warmth. Here’s one thing I know for sure: whilst the amount of denim shapes and cuts are broad and often overwhelming, there is one style that has continued to show up across the decades and that is the flared jean. Loved by our parents and now by us thanks to their ability to carry you through the season ahead, they’re a staple in many a fashion person’s wardrobe.

If the idea of flares sends you down a spiral of 70’s references with tight-as-you-like fits worn only with crochet and bouncy blow-out hair, then fear not. The skinny jean love-affair is dwindling and flares with shape and movement is now the preferred way to wear the trend for both fashion folk and celebrities alike. And designers aren’t shying away from cool, fresh ways to wear the style either. Chemena Kamali’s much praised about first show for Chloé showed high-waisted flares, at the autumn/winter 2024 show, while Etro used flare jeans to cohesively complement the eccentric designs.

For me, the thought of a flare used to make me nervous as it brought back memories of my own Miss Sixty and Killah jeans with their ‘large as life’ flared bottoms and a super-skinny top half… I have always preferred some space between myself and the fabric for both the comfort and more flattering silhouette it provides. Thankfully, in 2024, the flared jeans trend differs from the more traditional fit with front square pockets and buttons all the way (although there’s a time and place for those too), preferring a more modern cut with cleaner lines and finishes. The width doesn’t need to fit a small child underneath and the kick-out from the knee doesn’t need to be a sharp increase. A gradual slope is all that’s required to flirt with this trend and the waistband doesn’t need to be high and tight. Relax and enjoy it! Or, if you’ve always imagined yourself as a bit of a John Travolta strutting your way down the pavement in Saturday Night Fever then go wild and go forth!

Ah, Instagram. It has the power to connect us in ways we never imagined, but it also has the power to make us feel like everyone else has or does something better than we do. In case you missed this post last month, here’s the deal: Instagram is my job, so it’s safe to say I spend a lot of time on the app. As a result, I end up saving tons of posts from the brands and content creators I follow to come back to later and either explore further or purchase. So to save all of you some screen time, dear readers, I’m here to highlight the coolest things I saw on Instagram this month. The below are the best things from my feed in September. In case you missed this in the spring, I was born and raised in Los Angeles, and my style reflects the signature laid-back California aesthetic (as cliché as that may sound). You'll rarely see me in something other than jeans or a dress, and my t-shirt collection is borderline embarrassing. So I approach each new season with that in mind and pick and choose the trends that not only align with my personal style but also pair nicely with the main players in my wardrobe.

For fall 2019, there are definitely a few trends I'll be passing on, but I've already identified six that I'm 100% on board with. From cool leather separates to mock croc to the color trend sweeping the street style scene, below are the key fall trends L.A. girls like myself will be wearing this season. 

BELTED JACKETS

Belts, in general, will be a major fall 2019 trend, but I'm partial to the belted blazer and jacket looks we saw coming down the runways in February. The cinching at the waist makes outerwear instantly more flattering, and it's a look you can wear over a dress, paired with a skirt, or to top off jeans.

LOOSE TROUSERS

This fall I'll be pairing all my favorite tees, tanks, and bodysuits with loose-fit trousers. They always look polished, yet the wide-leg ensures they remain just as comfortable as jeans (one of our editors even said she's ditching her denim in favor of this trend). 

LEATHER SEPARATES

Fall 2019 is about all things leather. Blazers, dresses, skirts, trench coats—you name it. A chic leather piece makes any outfit look instantly cooler. I plan on combining the belted jacket and leather trends as Aimee Song did in the above photo for the coming months. 

MOCK CROC

Mock croc was a major trend last fall, and it's only going to get bigger in 2019. I'm leaning toward the accessories category for this trend as I'm already seeing so many amazing shoes, bags, and belts in the luxe texture. Nothing feels more fall to me than a brown mock-croc accessory. 

PISTACHIO

I typically stick to a mostly neutral color palette when getting dressed, and I haven't been a fan of the recent bold color trends like neon and lime green. But this season it's all about pistachio, and that's one color I can get on board with. It pairs well with neutrals and denim and always looks expensive (regardless of the actual price tag). 

CHUNKY KNITWEAR

Okay, we're not exactly reinventing the wheel here, but I'm itching to pair chunky knit sweaters with everything in my closet—from jeans to skirts to dresses. The outfit possibilities that come along with the perfect sweater are truly endless.

They may not be the most exciting thing in a closet, but a good pair of black skinny jeans are a wardrobe essential that I can't imagine life without. This was made much more apparent to me recently when I got rid of my trusted pair of black skinnies that I'd worn for years and were definitely past their prime. Only once this key piece was missing from my closet did I realize just how important it was that I invest in a new pair. (You really don't know a good thing until it's gone, amirite?) I have L.A. style, after all, so I wear jeans pretty much every day, and a black, skinny option was very noticeably absent after only a few weeks.

So I set out on the most daunting quest of them all: denim shopping. Nothing gives me a headache quite like the glare of fluorescent dressing-room lighting, but I wanted to make sure I weighed all my options before deciding on a new pair. Since virtually every brand under the sun makes a basic black skinny, I had many options to choose from. To save all of you the same headache (and unflattering lighting), I'm here to share my tips on how to find the best black skinny jeans. I tried on a total of 19 pairs between in-store and online orders, but there were only seven true winners that I would feel 100% confident replacing my old pair with. The brands I didn't like shall remain nameless, but the ones I did are going to get a huge shout-out momentarily.

If you’ve ever spilled a glass of red wine, smudged your lipstick onto a white shirt, or thrown something red into a load of your sheets, it’s probably left a pink stain that seems impossible to remove.
