We all love a multitasking beauty product, don't we? Whether it's a lip-and-cheek stain, a colour-correcting moisturiser or a hardworking multi-stick, products that streamline your routine while saving time and money are always welcome. But what about foundation with sunscreen? Can one product really do the job of both?

I put the question to my go-to dermatologist, Dr Anjali Mahto, founder of Self London, who delivered a reality check. "Foundation with added UV filters absolutely does not replace your dedicated, broad-spectrum sunscreen," she explains, adding that the reason is simple: people rarely apply makeup thickly or evenly enough to achieve the level of protection stated on the bottle.

The good news? Dr Mahto reveals that the added sun protection in foundation does still offer meaningful benefits, particularly for ageing skin. "The iron oxides often found in tinted makeup help block the visible light that can exacerbate stubborn pigmentation." Just remember that foundation with SPF should be viewed as a useful secondary layer of defence rather than your primary shield.

That said, today's formulas are more sophisticated than ever. Alongside broad-spectrum UV protection, many new-gen foundations now contain hydrating ingredients, antioxidants and skin-perfecting pigments that help create a smoother, healthier-looking complexion.

For extra points, look for formulas featuring a PA++++ rating. Developed in Asia and commonly found in K-beauty products, the PA (Protection Grade of UVA) system indicates a very high level of protection against UVA rays—the ones responsible for wrinkles, pigmentation and other signs of premature ageing.

And if you're wondering how to reapply SPF over makeup, Dr Mahto has some sage advice. "Using a dedicated sunscreen mist or a sunscreen-containing setting spray is the most convenient, hygienic method. Alternatively, you can use a translucent sunscreen powder or gently dab a lightweight sunscreen fluid over your skin, being careful to press rather than drag."

How I Tested

To find the best foundations with sunscreen, I tested each foundation for a few days, paying close attention to how it performed in everyday wear rather than just after the first application. I assessed coverage, finish and longevity, looking for formulas that evened out skin tone without feeling heavy, cakey or uncomfortable. Particular attention was paid to how well each product blended, whether it layered successfully over sunscreen and skincare, and how it wore throughout the day.

Because sun protection is a key selling point, I also considered SPF level and any additional UVA protection, such as a PA rating. Extra credit was given to formulas that offered skincare benefits, including hydration, antioxidant protection and barrier support. Overall, ease of application, comfort, wear time and the ability to deliver both a polished complexion and reliable daily sun protection were the deciding factors in my final selections.

This has been my go-to foundation for more than a year, thanks to its impressive staying power. Powered by long-wear polymers, it lasts from the school run through to pub drinks without fading or slipping. It also gives skin a healthy, natural-looking glow, while the buildable coverage allows you to dial up the finish as needed. The compact's clever mesh applicator dispenses just the right amount of product, making application virtually foolproof. Best of all, the creamy texture feels comfortable and hydrating without tipping into greasy territory, making it an excellent choice for combination skin.

2. Dior Forever Skin Glow

If your skin is on the sensitive side, I can't recommend this foundation highly enough. It has a lightweight, almost serum-like texture that glides onto skin effortlessly, yet still delivers impressive coverage. It blends seamlessly and, while easy to build, a single layer is enough to leave skin looking radiant, fresh and naturally dewy. The formula is packed with hyaluronic acid to boost hydration and niacinamide, a gentle anti-inflammatory ingredient that helps strengthen the skin barrier. When it comes to sun protection, it also delivers with SPF 25 and PA+++, offering a reassuring level of daily UV defence.

3. Nars Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturiser SPF30

A bestseller for good reason, this may technically be a tinted moisturiser, but I found the coverage rivals that of many foundations. Alongside SPF 30, the formula contains vitamin C to help defend against environmental aggressors and brighten uneven skin tone, while French Polynesian Kopara delivers a boost of hydration and helps keep skin feeling comfortable throughout the day. It also has an impressively flexible texture that moves with the skin, so I found it didn't settle into my fine lines as the day wore on. It's perfect for hot weather, too, as it feels incredibly lightweight.

4. Tom Ford Architecture Radiance Hydrating Foundation SPF50+

What immediately sets this foundation apart is its SPF 50 status—a level of protection that's surprisingly rare in complexion products. It blends beautifully, feels creamy yet lightweight on the skin and leaves behind a radiant, healthy-looking glow. What impressed me most, however, was just how hydrating it is; you could easily skip moisturiser and apply it straight after your sunscreen. It's also resistant to sweat, water and humidity, yet manages to avoid the cakey, heavy feel that often comes with long-wear formulas. Yes, it's an investment, but if sun protection is a priority and you've found other foundations fall short, this one is well worth considering.

5. Eborian CC Creme

If you're after that elusive "your skin but better" finish, this CC cream is hard to beat. Lightweight and easy to apply, it evens out redness, smooths tone and delivers a healthy, natural-looking glow without ever feeling heavy. The coverage sits somewhere between a tinted moisturiser and a foundation, making it ideal for days when you want a bit of polish without looking overly made up. Better still, it combines skincare benefits with broad-spectrum sun protection, so your complexion looks fresher while staying shielded from daily UV exposure. For the laid-back days, or when I really don't want my makeup to take centre stage, then this is a winner.

6. Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturiser

Part skincare, part makeup, this is infused with raspberry leaf extract and prebiotics to deliver lasting hydration, while black grape pomace helps blur the appearance of uneven texture and white rose extract nourishes the skin. The lightweight, flexible formula sits beautifully on the skin, and I loved how it resisted the tendency to settle into fine lines. It really helped to give my skin a healthy glow.

7. Fenty Skin Hydra Vizor Huez Tinted Moisturiser Broad Spectrum Mineral SPF 30 Sunscreen

This was brilliant at dialling up my glow. The pigment blend helps to tone down dullness and redness while still letting your natural radiance shine through. The shade range is strong, with a thoughtful focus on undertones. The coverage is lightweight and more sheer than buildable, but it really delivers when it comes to luminosity and a healthy-looking finish.

Will Using SPF in Foundation Increase My Overall Protection? 

While it might sound logical, Dr Mahto says you cannot mathematically stack UV filters. "Wearing a factor 30 foundation over a factor 30 sunscreen will only ever provide a maximum of factor 30 protection." However, she adds that layering them is still highly recommended. "The makeup helps catch any areas you may have missed and somewhat compensates for the common habit of under-applying primary sunscreen," she adds.

Can You Wear Sunscreen and Foundation Together? 

"Absolutely," says Dr Mahto. Simply apply your sunscreen as the final step of your skincare routine, allow it a minute or two to fully absorb and form a film, and then apply your foundation smoothly over the top.

Is SPF in Foundation Good for Ageing Skin? 

The added sun protection in foundation is certainly beneficial for ageing skin, Dr Mahto reveals. "The iron oxides often found in tinted makeup help block the visible light that can exacerbate stubborn pigmentation. However, it should only ever be viewed as a helpful secondary layer of defence, rather than your primary anti-ageing shield," she reveals.

I first wore this on a long day where I needed my makeup to last through until an evening event, and it held up impressively whilst still looking fresh. What I like most is that I can build it up in specific areas without it ever looking thick or cakey overall.

This is my go-to when I want just a subtle evening out of the skin. It feels almost like skincare on application, which makes it incredibly easy to apply in the morning without overthinking it. It’s a product I recommend constantly because it removes so much of the usual guesswork when it comes to picking a shade (there are so many options!). The finish is soft, blurred and wearable, making it a reliable everyday base that just works.

How to Apply Foundation Drops

When it comes to applying foundation drops, the beauty really lies in their flexibility. There’s no rigid rulebook or overly technical technique required, which is part of what makes them so appealing for everyday use. As White Turle explains, "You can apply these however you feel most comfortable, really. I do like a buffing brush, which gives a nice sheer finish, but they work just as well using your fingertips."

A brush will typically give you that soft-focus, lightly blurred effect, whilst fingertips tend to melt the product into the skin for a more lived-in, natural look. Either way, the result remains beautifully sheer and believable. White Turle also recommends a simple, intuitive placement technique. "Start in the middle of your face and work outwards, building up where you need more coverage." This approach allows you to keep the centre of the face slightly more perfected whilst maintaining transparency around the edges, ensuring the overall finish never feels heavy or overdone.

How We Tested

To compile this edit, I tested each formula over several days. I applied products using both fingers and buffing brushes to assess finish, blendability and versatility, with particular attention to how they layered and wore throughout the day. The Formula

Does anyone else find foundation sticks quite drying? As much as I love the format, whenever I've tested them in the past, they've always clung to dry patches of skin. So, when I tested this foundation on the back of my hand, I practically squealed with excitement. It's hard to put into words how creamy it feels, but I'm going to give it my best shot.

The formula is infused with ceramides, squalane, sodium hyaluronate and shea butter, so you can already imagine how hydrating it is. As a beauty editor, I love a skincare makeup hybrid. That being said, as someone with combination skin, I was a little skeptical about how oily it could get throughout the day, or whether these hydrating ingredients could actually feel quite heavy, but this formula is surprisingly lightweight. In fact, I'd go as far as to say that it feels like wearing nothing at all.

The Application

Thanks to its velvety formula, this foundation glides on like butter (not that I've ever applied butter to my skin, but you get the gist). One swipe, and suddenly, blemishes, redness and pores take on a blurred effect, creating an even, radiant base that makes me feel like my most confident self. Whether you prefer a foundation brush or your fingers, swipe the stick onto the skin and blend as you go.

My Verdict

Is it obvious yet that I've fallen in love with another Jones Road base product? This little stick has quickly replaced all of my tinted moisturisers, skin tints and foundations, and I can't see myself reaching for anything else this season. The creamy formula, the ease of application, the naturally radiant finish, the wide range of shades and undertones (I wear shade Beige, btw)...I have no notes. If there’s one thing you should know about me, it’s that I’m obsessive about makeup. What to Look for in Drugstore Foundation

• Shade and undertone range: Celebrity makeup artist Neil Scibelli recommends first seeing whether or not your foundation of choice comes in “various undertones, shade ranges, and finishes—whether cool, warm, or neutral.” Having the correct color match makes all the difference.
• Finish: Spickard also advises taking the foundation’s finish into consideration when making your final selection. "Are you going for matte? Natural and skinlike? Or something more radiant and dewy glowy?" he asks. "Finish impacts how the foundation wears and feels just as much as the formula itself."
• Extra benefits: Nowadays, foundations (yes, even those at the drugstore!) should do so much more for you than simply cover up imperfections. Many will come with additional benefits like SPF (take the Neutrogena Healthy Skin Foundation, for example), extra-hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid (hi, Maybelline Plump and Glow), and brightening elements like vitamin C (looking at you, Maybelline Super Stay Skin Tint). I say this with zero exaggeration: Every single time I wear this Hourglass foundation, at least one person compliments my skin. I always relish these comments (the best type of praise for a beauty editor!), but they sure do hit differently when my skin actually isn't at its best.

I recently experienced a gnarly reaction after testing a new product (the trade-off from constantly playing guinea pig!) and have been struggling with flaky, congested skin for the past several weeks. One thin layer of this foundation, though, and all my textural concerns disappear—well, at least for the day—to the point where my own husband thought my complexion magically healed overnight. Quite the scheme!

Never have I ever used a foundation that covered up breakouts and discoloration while appearing so naturally skin-like, and at the risk of selling out my new favorite base product, I must wax poetic on its powers. Behold, the Hourglass Illusion Luminous Glow Foundation.

The Formula: Smoothing With 12-Hour Wear

The foundation itself boasts medium coverage with a super-luminous finish (true to its name), unlike the brand's Veil Hydrating Skin Tint, which is dewy yet sheer, and its Ambient Soft Glow Foundation, which has medium coverage yet not nearly as much glow. In terms of ingredients, it features an advanced hydra-smoothing technology with hyaluronic microspheres to noticeably plump fine lines and even out texture, as well as SPF 30 for extra sun protection—a welcome bonus!

I suspect that hydra-smoothing technology is what helps the foundation instantly disguise every single blemish on my face. Seriously, the moment I buff it into my skin, all my breakout woes mysteriously vanish. And I'm not alone: In a clinical study conducted by the brand, 93% of participants said the foundation instantly reduced the look of imperfections and made their skin look smoother.

The formula also has incredible long wear—12 hours to be exact—without creasing or flaking as the day goes on. I can also totally attest to this perk; Illusion Luminous Glow is the one of the only foundations that outlasts a full office day with multiple late-night work events and somehow appears just as immaculate as my 8 a.m. application.

The Application: Creamy and Even

As for the texture? It's creamy and blendable but has a thicker consistency than a skin tint (which tends to be rather lightweight and serum-like), so a little goes a long way with the application. In fact, I only need a pearl-size amount for my entire face, which I apply to the back of my hand, warm it up with Hourglass's Vanish Seamless Finish Foundation Brush, then buff it into my skin for even, less-is-more coverage. It fuses to my skin like a dream and leaves behind the prettiest megawatt glow. On that note, this is probably not the best pick for those with oily skin trying to pare back the shine. It's capital-D dewy, but I happen to love the glassy finish for my combination, perennially thirsty skin.

My Results: Smooth, Filter-Like Skin

As you can probably guess, I score this foundation a 1000/10. I've been wearing it regularly since it launched back in January (in the shade 4, if you're curious), and it's become my secret weapon for lackluster skin days. Yes, it's glowy to the max, but it somehow never makes me look sweaty—just perfectly fresh and dewy. My favorite perk, however, is how it instantly smooths my skin texture while appearing completely natural, like I don't have any makeup on whatsoever. Perhaps that's why I've received so many compliments on my skin (not my makeup) while I'm wearing it. I often pair it with just a touch of blush, brow gel, and my ride-or-die lip combo (note, no concealer!), so I could theoretically trick people into thinking, yes, I did wake up like this.

As I mentioned up top, even my husband commented on how clear my skin looked after I came home from work. "Your skin is looking great!" he remarked, astounded, as I had been complaining about my product-testing struggles just the night before. Little did he know my foundation was doing all the legwork—but hey, I'll take it.

Yes, definitely. Victoria Beckham Beauty is tagged at luxury price points (the beloved Foundation Drops, for example, will set you back $110), but trust that the high-quality formulas are worth the investment. "I think it can be your special-occasion splurge," Sewell shares. Not to mention, the products themselves are so richly pigmented that they'll last you quite a while. For instance, I've had my Colour Wash blushes for almost a year and am nowhere near hitting pan despite using them daily.

Let's be honest, it's never easy to find a good foundation match, especially if you're buying it online. And even if you're able to swatch in store on the beauty counter, it's not always easy to find an exact match from the shades available to you.

So, when I discovered Dcypher, a brand that provides custom-mixed foundations not too long ago, my interest was immediately piqued. Whilst I already have foundation, skin tint and BB cream formulas that I adore, the shades can often lean too warm, too cool or just not work for my complexion in the change of seasons.

So, having a custom-matched formula mixed for both my skin tone, skin type and the coverage plus the finish I require? It sounded too good to be true, and, to be honest, I was dubious that I would like the formula (I'm incredibly fussy, and like a natural-looking foundation, or a glowy foundation formula). Dcypher Custom Mixed Foundation

How it Works

You start your custom match by selecting your coverage, and you can choose between sheer, medium and full coverage finishes depending on how much you like. Then, you can choose the finish from matte, natural or radiant, and choose your skin type so that Dcypher can blend the perfect formula for your complexion.

Next is where Dcypher analyses your skin tone. Using your phone or laptop camera, it will take a snapshot of your complexion to measure your skin's depth, vibrancy and undertone. These will all shape the pigments mixed into the custom shade, and you'll be given a unique shade ID code, so that you can reorder the exact shade again if you wish. Then, your custom-blended foundation will be sent to you. Dcypher also offers a concealer, foundation drops and a glowy skin booster, all of which can be made in your shade too.

The Formula

For my foundation, I went for a sheer coverage paired with a radiant finish. I have combination skin, but I like my complexion products to be lightweight and subtly radiant. Upon trying the foundation for the first time, I was blown away by the colour match. It basically disappeared into my skin. The liquid texture isn't heavy whatsoever, and it melts in like a second skin with a subtly radiant finish.

Even with choosing the sheer finish, I was surprised at the amount of coverage it still gave me, so keep that in mind if you prefer something very light, such as a skin tint (the Dcypher Custom Glow Booster might be more up your street if you favour a lighter and glowier finish).

No matter what formula you have, each foundation has the same core ingredients to hydrate, including hyaluronic acid and glycerin, as well as caesalpinia spinosa fruit and kappaphycus alvarezii extracts.

The Application

As you can see, my foundation blends seamlessly into my skin. I've found that having an exact shade match means I often use less (one pump of foundation is plenty for my entire face), meaning it sits better on my skin, and there's no need to worry about blending it down your neck. It sinks in totally seamlessly.

A word of warning, however. I find the pump on my bottle too powerful. It needs quite a bit of force to push down, which, the first time I used it, fired it all over my carpet. So take caution! Packaging malfunctions aside, I really can't fault the foundation. Plus, if you need to switch up your shades for summer or winter, you can rescan your skin again and have another match to see you through seasonal complexion changes.

My Verdict

I'm so impressed with the shade match. After years of never finding one that was quite right, there is something very reassuring knowing that this foundation is completely bespoke to my skin. I love the formula so much more than I thought I would. It's lightweight, and even the sheer finish offers generous coverage over my rosacea and acne scarring. The radiant finish is beautiful, a satiny finish that's not too dewy, but just lends my skin a healthy glow.

Sure, it might not be as cheap as drugstore foundations, but it's not quite as expensive as the luxury foundations out there, and for the custom-blended formula, I think the price point is very fair for what you're getting. And given how little of the product you actually need to cover your skin, I can imagine a bottle of this foundation lasting a long time. I now reach for this foundation almost every day, that's how much I love it. I will never be without a bottle in my makeup bag.

This time around, we're getting a glimpse into a night out with Morgan Stewart McGraw, who just launched a new podcast with SiriusXM.

Morgan Stewart McGraw could recite the alphabet, and I'd be on the edge of my seat. The Rich Kids of Beverly Hills alum, Renggli founder, and bona fide tastemaker has the kind of star power that leaves you spellbound yet somehow makes you feel right at ease. Chatting with McGraw on a Monday afternoon truly feels like catching up with a friend (a friend who just so happens to have impeccable recs for The Row bags), and while she reveals she "never thought [she] was going to do a podcast," I can think of no better way to bring her 1.6 million followers further into her orbit. "I feel like I've had all of these different conversations in my head for the last three years, and it's time to put them out," she says, assuredly.

Play The Morgan Stewart Show out loud, ideally as you apply your makeup for a night out, and it's like she's curled up on your couch, sharing product recs and spewing hot takes. "You're going to be getting a lot of different versions of Morgan Stewart," McGraw tells me. There's the interview component, where friends and family members come on as special guests (I'm told her husband and mom will appear within the first handful of episodes, along with Khloé Kardashian and Tinx), but you'll also hear solo conversations consisting of whatever's genuinely running through her head that day. "I have a whole episode dedicated to my icks,'" she adds. "You'll definitely chuckle, especially as you're getting ready, having a glass of wine, all of that stuff. I'm not going to bore you. Could you imagine?"

No, I really couldn't. Even the most mundane of events seem like grand affairs coming from McGraw's expertly glossed mouth. ("I usually hate lip gloss, but for some reason I'm wearing it today," she quips.) Case in point? When we hop on our video call, she announces she has no idea where her wallet is, which leads us to discussing her morning routine and, eventually, our respective star signs. (McGraw's a Gemini, "but May—don't be scared," she jokes.)

As such, she has a story behind every night-out beauty staple. A contour stick isn't just a contour stick; says MGraw, it "will change your fucking life." She also has a secret source for a discontinued bronzer ("I have them send it to me on the low") and, true to her fashion commentator nature, plenty of hot takes on iconic bag trends. "I have been wearing my old The Row Ascot bag to go out in. I don't want to do a mini Kelly anymore. If it's a fun color, sure, but like… we had our moment," she declares. A well-loved Ascot it is—or she'll honestly just stick a few essentials right into her pockets. "I'm very type A and type B combined," she adds. "I've gone out with a powder brush in my back pocket." Powder brushes: the new It accessories. Find the rest of her must-haves below, from the lip liner she buys 30 at a time to the gentle cleanser she won't ever skip.

"I'm huge on lip liner," McGraw says regarding her on-the-go items. "I feel like I need that above any sort of lip balm or lipstick. At this point in my life, my lips have no color in them anymore, so if the lip liner wears off, we're in really bad shape." Her favorite one to apply (and reapply) is Make Up For Ever's Artist Color Pencil, specifically in the shade Anywhere Caffeine. "I buy, like, 30 at a time because it's the best fucking lip liner. It's the perfect shade of nude," she adds.

Another pencil she loves? Anastasia Beverly Hills's Ultra-Slim Eyebrow Pencil in Taupe. "I don't do blonde or dark brown—very important. It's taupe," she adds. I totally align with her on the gray-brown shade; as celebrity makeup artist Katie Jane Hughes once told me, a gray-ish brow product is best suited for those with cooler tones in their hair. At this point, I'm fully convinced McGraw and I have the same makeup M.O. because the next staple in her going-out lineup is a brown mascara—namely, Tower 28's MakeWaves Mascara, a lengthening formula I also swear by (so much so that I wore it on my wedding day). "I've been curling my lashes a lot too lately, which was a fear I had to conquer," McGraw jokes.

Next up, McGraw's aforementioned life-changing contour stick: Anastasia Beverly Hills Smooth Blur Cream Contour Stick. "I dot it around the forehead, [on the] cheekbones... I do a little in the creases of the eyes just to shade them out, and under the chin. It is the best contour stick on the market, oh my god," she gushes. She uses the shade Shadow, a perfectly cool-toned camel hue.

While she doesn't necessarily keep this on her person, McGraw mentions she wears Nars's Natural Matte Longwear Foundation on nights out, praising it for its impressive longevity. "It does not move. I was shocked," she notes. It's a fabulous evening pick as opposed to something more radiant, she says, which she'd rather wear during the day. To touch up her base on the go, "I really like the Ilia concealer," she adds.

McGraw certainly knows her way around a striking face beat ("I've paid attention to my makeup artist and TikTok, and now I really know what's enhancing my features," she shares), but like any well-versed beauty enthusiast, she also knows the getting "unready" routine is just as crucial. In fact, her biggest beauty "ick" is neglecting a nightly face wash. "I know people are trying to downplay that like it's not that big of a deal. It is the biggest deal," she warns. "It's not good for you. It ages you." She's a fan of Image Skincare's cleansers, namely its vitamin C-infused wash that's super gentle on sensitive skin.

After we wax poetic on our favorite places to go out in New York and L.A. and swap restaurant recommendations ("The best smoothie in L.A. is the Beverly Hills Juice Club," she declares), I let her know that we're at the end of our interview slot, knowing she has back-to-back press appointments lined up to promote her new show. "Why did this go so fast?" she gasps, eyes wide in disbelief. I imagine her upcoming episodes will feel just like this: gabbing with a girlfriend and watching the time soar.

As a beauty editor, I don't discern products by price. Rather, I discern by performance. Whether I'm shopping for drugstore heroes or high-end investment items, I will openly and gladly declare a product "overhyped" if it doesn't give me exceptional results. Period. That context is critical for what I'm here to discuss today—Hermès's first-ever foundation.

Now, obviously, Hermès is a luxury brand, and its beauty selection reflects that. (It makes sense that the brand that brought us the Birkin Bag is going to produce other investment-worthy items, beauty or otherwise.) Still, I was shocked to see that its foundation costs $145, and I had to know whether it was worth it. So I put it to the test. Ahead, read my truly honest review after using it for two weeks.

Hermès Plein Air Luminous Matte Skincare Foundation

Here it is—Hermès Luminous Matte Skincare Foundation. It was conceived and created by Gregoris Pyrpylis, creative director of Hermès Beauty, to combine high-performance makeup, effective skincare, and a natural-looking result (the trifecta!).

It offers medium coverage and, as the name implies, a matte finish. Unlike the cakey, one-dimensional foundations of yesterday, this is a modern matte formula—it has a velvety cloud-like finish. It also offers 16-hour hold with heat, humidity, and sweat resistance. Oh, and skin benefits.

It's actually more skincare than it is makeup. The foundation has an 82% skincare base with a trio of active ingredients: niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, and white mulberry extract. The first is a do-it-all ingredient that smooths, brightens, and improves skin quality. The second is our favorite hydrating hero. And the third is an antioxidant that plumps the skin and protects it from oxidative stress.

That all sounds very impressive, but does it deliver on those promises? And can it really make the complexion look flawlessly, velvety smooth? To answer those questions, I had to put it to the test. See my before and after photos below.

My Review

I have incredibly dry, dehydrated, and redness-prone skin. In fact, I put this foundation through a trial by fire because I used it for the first time during a particularly intense rosacea flare-up. Lo and behold, it disguised my patchy redness without highlighting my dryness and texture. It looked smooth, like a second skin, blurred my pores, and made my complexion look like it had a natural, lit-from-within luminosity. And it continued to do all of those things, hour after hour, day after day, for two full weeks of testing.

Honestly, I feel like my "after" photo doesn't even do it justice. IRL, the foundation looked almost undetectable on my skin, and it didn't cling to fine lines, oxidize, or separate when I kept hitting it with face mist throughout the day. When I added blush, bronzer, and powder on top, it looked nearly flawless.

Needless to say, I'm impressed by this formula, but I strongly feel I should be, seeing as it's so pricey. I'll never claim that anyone *needs* a $145 foundation, but I will say I recommend it if your budget allows it. And I'm officially welcoming it into my list of hall-of-fame foundations for rosacea, which I don't do lightly!

It's also worth noting that Hermès offers an accompanying primer (for a whopping $110 per bottle). I personally didn't use it alongside the foundation since I wanted to put the latter to the test without any help. That said, it's designed to prep the skin and enhance the results of it thanks to a lightweight texture and a smoothing and moisturizing formula.

It's a universal primer that suits all skin tones and melts into the skin, offering a totally transparent finish and a lit-from-within radiance, while blurring pores and smoothing skin texture. It's also heat-, humidity-, and sweatproof.

The iconic Double Serum has been a mainstay in my skincare routine for as long as I can remember, but when I heard that the brand was launching a foundation version, I was a little confused. I immediately imagined a greasy, oily finish that would slip and slide all day, but I couldn't have been more wrong.

This serum formulation glides onto the skin effortlessly, offering a naturally luminous finish that makes my complexion look so healthy and glowy. Although my skin is dry, I can get quite oily throughout the day, but I found I only had to reapply powder once or twice when wearing this, which is no more than usual. As you can see from the bottle, the unique technology dispenses the perfect amount of both foundation and serum onto the back of your hand, and thanks to the medium-to-full coverage, a little goes a long way. I love that I'm getting both hydrating skincare ingredients (hello, hyaluronic acid and peptides) and a luminous foundation in one, and the next-generation formula has made getting ready so much quicker, as I don't feel the need to apply hundreds of different hydrating serums before applying my foundation in the morning.

2. Armani Luminous Silk Foundation

If you've read my review of the original Luminous Silk Foundation, you'll know it's one of my favourite products for a slightly more full-coverage finish that still looks natural and radiant. I honestly didn't think it could get much better, but then I tried the brand-new formula and was blown away by the results.

As explained to me by the brand, the new foundation contains skincare ingredients such as glycerin and niacinamide to improve your complexion over time and add more luminosity. Not only that, but the shade range has been extended, and there are now 44 shades on offer. In my opinion, this new formulation feels incredibly lightweight and hydrating, and gives my skin a fresh, glowy look that, while subtle, has been earning me so many compliments.

3. Dior Forever Skin Glow

Dior has launched not one, but two next-generation foundations that are giving my skincare products a run for their money. Forever Skin Glow and Forever Skin Wear are the ultimate makeup and skincare hybrids. While Forever Skin Wear offers a natural matte finish, Forever Skin Glow is my personal favourite thanks to the luminous finish.

Infused with a "triple action complex" of hyaluronic acid, niacinamide and peptides, this foundation has all the ingredients I would look for in a top-of-the-range facial serum, combined with medium coverage and a radiant effect. I would personally say the coverage is light but buildable, but I love the second-skin finish it gives. It's the ultimate "your skin but better" product for spring and summer.

4. Estée Lauder Double Wear

If I'm being really honest, I've never been a huge fan of the original Double Wear foundation. Don't get me wrong, the coverage is amazing, but it always felt a little heavy on my skin. However, this new formula has won me over.

A buildable, breathable iteration of the popular foundation, with 60 shades now available, I can't see anyone not liking this. It feels so much more lightweight compared to the original but still delivers medium to full coverage for those days when you want a more seamless makeup look. Ingredients such as hyaluronic acid hydrate the complexion, so although it still has a natural matte finish, it doesn't feel drying whatsoever. The only thing I could possibly fault is that the bottle doesn't come with a pump, but apart from that, it's perfect.

5. Hermès Plein Air Luminous Matte Skincare Foundation

I know this foundation is eye-wateringly expensive, but I wouldn't be including it in this roundup if I didn't think it truly deserved to be here. While the words "matte foundation" aren't usually words I gravitate towards (we all know I love a glowy finish by now), matte formulas have come a long, long way in recent months, and this Hermès foundation is a prime example.

I wouldn't say it's a true matte finish, but more of a natural, soft matte effect that still lets some luminosity through. Packed with active skincare ingredients such as niacinamide, hyaluronic acid and white mulberry, it feels incredibly hydrating on the skin and wears comfortably throughout the day. When I first used it, I was surprised by how watery the formula was. I think I thought my Dream Matte Mousse days were coming back to haunt me, but of course, Hermès has created an innovative foundation that seamlessly blends with the skin.

6. Victoria Beckham by Augustinus Bader The Foundation Drops with TFC8®

The Victoria Beckham Beauty foundation needs no introduction. This formula went viral when it launched, and for good reason. Powered by Augustinus Bader’s TFC8® technology, the skincare-focused foundation works to rejuvenate the complexion over time.

Finding a foundation for fair skin has never been straightforward for me. As someone with naturally pale skin and a distinctly yellow undertone, many of my formative years were spent navigating formulas that skew too pink, too chalky or missed the mark entirely. Truly, landing on the best foundation or skin tint for me felt like it was going to evade me for life.

That said, the beauty landscape has changed dramatically since my younger self was struggling. In recent years, brands have spent a lot of time and money on expanding their shade ranges across the board—from foundations for dark skin (although there is still a lot of work to be done here) to the very lightest tones—bringing nuance and undertone accuracy to categories that once felt limited. The result? There are now some genuinely excellent foundation options for pale skin that deliver on finish, longevity and tone.

How to Find a Foundation for Pale Skin

Much like finding your perfect pair of jeans, there tends to be a lot of trial and error when it comes to finding a great foundation—but it is possible. "The biggest mistake I see is people choosing a shade that is either too dark or too warm because they are trying to avoid looking washed out," says makeup artist Katie Daisy. And whilst the shade itself is undeniably important, Daisy also points out that very pale skin can show texture more easily, so the formula that you choose is just as crucial. "Foundations that are too matte or heavy can look flat or cakey rather than skin-like," she continues.

How to Choose the Best Shade

Daisy recommends working out your undertone to really help you select the best foundation for your skin tone, but explains that undertones can be incredibly subtle with paler complexions. "It’s not always as simple as warm versus cool; you need to look at a few indicators together," she says. "If you burn easily in the sun and rarely tan, then you’re often cool or neutral, whereas if you burn but eventually get a slight tan, you might lean neutral or move olive."

There is truth in the jewellery trick too—if you suit silver, then you might be more cool or pink-toned, whereas if you suit gold, then you might be more warm or yellow. It's moisturising and oil-controlling, so it keeps the skin smooth, even, and balanced all day. It's also sweat- and humidity-resistant, so you don't have to worry about it slipping, smudging or sliding off your skin at any point. The best part, though, is its softening, blurring effect. Pores? On the prowl for a noncomedogenic foundation that's not overly dewy or matte? Look no further than Luminous Silk. Armani Beauty's Luminous Silk Foundation is one of the most iconic complexion products in the game, beloved by makeup artists, aestheticians, and beauty editors alike since its initial launch over 25 years ago. "Probably my longest, most reliable relationship that I have with a product," celebrity makeup artist Kelli Anne Sewell gushed during our WWW 100 Beauty Awards. For my own wedding this year, my long-wear foundation pick was a no-brainer—Luminous Silk, all the way.

So when I heard that the brand decided to reformulate such a hero, I (along with plenty of other Luminous Silk loyalists) was a bit hesitant to give up my precious OG bottle. The previous formula was already pretty effing spectacular; why reinvent the wheel? Yet after testing the new-and-improved Luminous Silk for months and learning firsthand about the development process, I can attest that the upgraded foundation completely exceeds expectations. The Formula

Rest assured the buildable, long-wearing capabilities of this foundation remain the same—if not better. It features a new "liquid silk" technology to replace the formula's patented "micro-fil" pigments that, according to the brand's head of makeup R&D, Rena Hayashi, offers even more long-lasting performance. "It is a unique oil blend with advanced fillers," she tells me of the high-tech addition. Like the name suggests, the blend creates a smooth, velvety effect that looks just like—you guessed it!—liquid silk.

Speaking of pigments, Armani also expanded the shade range, creating 18 new iterations for a total of 44 gorgeous hues. "A new green pigment has allowed us to expand the shade range for those with olive undertones, providing a more accurate match," Hayashi explains. "Additionally, an ultramarine blue pigment was incorporated into our deeper shades. This innovation helps to enhance luminosity and intensity in the makeup finish. … Each shade has a unique receipt, just like each skin tone is unique."

The ingredients themselves are still noncomedogenic, but the new formula does come spiked with more hydrating skincare players, namely glycerin and niacinamide. "Consumer needs evolve day by day," Hayashi shares. And in today's market, skin-caring benefits are no longer a perk for makeup formulas—they're expected. "On top of beautiful makeup finishes, the consumer is now expecting products that are caring to the skin," Hayashi adds. Rest assured, though: That finish stays perfectly luminous.

The Application and Wear Time

The best thing about Luminous Silk is, hands down, its weightless, filter-like finish. There's a reason celebrity makeup artists consider it a godsend for red carpet events! That said, Carolina Gonzalez (who frequently paints the faces of Sabrina Carpenter, Gigi Hadid, and Hailee Steinfeld) has noticed even better improvements to the finish and payoff. "What I noticed with the old formula was that it sometimes picked up texture," she admits. "I would usually just add a bit of powder if I felt some texture was being emphasized since it was so luminous."

The new formula (which Gonzalez has had in her kit since July—"Lucky me!" she quips) boasts a noticeably smoother consistency that settles effortlessly—appearing like the best version of your skin. "I feel like it doesn’t pick up texture in the same way," she shares. "At the same time, it still feels moisturizing and wears beautifully throughout the day."

The new version lasts even longer than the OG bottle (as if that were even possible!). "The old formula also wore well, but I didn’t realize this new one is long-wear for up to 24 hours, which is definitely an added bonus," Gonzalez says. I can personally attest to its extra longevity—more on my experience in just a moment—and so can other shoppers, who swear by it from sunup to sundown. "I did my usual primer, setting powder, and setting spray and this lasted till freaking 9 p.m. when I took it off (since 6 a.m.)," one Reddit user writes.

My Experience and Results

As I mentioned, Luminous Silk is my ride-or-die foundation. I wore it on my own wedding day this past November, if that tells you anything about my obsession! I was able to swatch the top-secret upgrade over the summer, but it wasn't until December that I finally snagged a full-size bottle. I applied it on my busiest workday—a back-to-back meeting schedule followed by a late-night holiday party—and from there I was hooked.

Like Gonzalez mentioned, the application is incredible, instantly covering up redness and uneven texture while leaving behind a veil of luminosity. I don't even need to follow up with powder; the foundation alone—plus a touch of concealer under my eyes and around my nose—is enough to keep me looking velvety all day long. I'll dispense one pump on my hand, swirl a dense complexion brush into the product until all its bristles are well-coated, then stipple the foundation on my skin in thin layers. This way, I can have more control over the coverage and ensure I don't wind up with globs of product. (Gonzalez herself cosigns the technique!)

Post-holidays, my skin has been acting up with inflammation and breakouts pebbled along my forehead and chin (which I'm chalking up to an influx of holiday sweets and champagne), but one to two layers of this foundation is all I need to mask the redness and congestion. In fact, the very same day I took this picture above, a colleague later complimented me on my glowing skin. I have to say it felt like sorcery.

Interestingly, I do find the new foundation to have a slightly stronger scent. It's not overwhelming by any means, but it does have a noticeably fresh, powdery aroma. I find that the whisper of fragrance goes away as the product dries down (within minutes), but it's something to call out if you prefer a 100% fragrance-free complexion product.

Overall, I'd say the new Luminous Silk Foundation doesn't just measure up to the cult fave—it somehow performs even better. The luxury price point is certainly nothing to scoff at, but if you were down to drop $69 on the iconic foundation before, I assure you that you'll fall just as hard for the new-and-improved version. Even Luminous Silk haters (the very few that there are) have praised the updated formula, which is how you know a revamp's been done right. You simply must see the butter-skin results for yourself, but for those who remain on the fence, allow Gonzalez to have the final word: "If you think that it couldn't get better than what you already have, it did!"

Blush Blocking

Beauty lovers have been heavy-handed with their blush for the last two years, but these rosy pigments will be utilized in a more intentional, multitasking way this year. “2026 will be defined by a real ‘cheek-first’ approach to makeup,” explains DeRoest. “Blush isn’t just an accent anymore—it’s becoming the anchor of the entire look.”

Whether flushy, doll-like pinks or deep, jammy swathes, DeRoest is seeing “everything from soft, diffused color” to “more sculpted, lifted placements” trending upward for 2026. Think toasted blush in the hollows of the cheekbones in lieu of bronzer (much like Marianna Hewitt’s “blonzer” trick) and cream blush tapped onto the lips for a blurred, French-girl look (as demonstrated by Mario Dedivanovic in his party-ready makeup tutorial).

One thing that celebrity makeup artists make abundantly clear about 2026 is that complexions are going to look a lot less “wet” this year. “Skin will stay radiant, but the finish is evolving,” DeRoest explains. Though skincare may well still be in the “glass skin” era, the makeup industry is leaving this shellacked look behind in favor of dreamier, blurrier, softly veiled skin. Sewell sees this as a direct response to the overly dewy-skin trend that’s steered the complexion ship in the last few years. “Glassy, glazed-doughnut skin is out, and soft blur is in,” she proclaims.

DeRoest describes this angelic, cloud-like complexion trend as a “smoother, gentler glow—like light bouncing off well-moisturized skin.” To achieve this look, reach for moisturizing skin tints with a whisper of coverage or buildable foundations with natural or satin finishes. “If you want more dimension, layer a cream blush for radiance or use a small amount of powder to soften the finish,” DeRoest adds.

Feathered Finishes

This isn’t a trend you can achieve with products; it’s one you accomplish through sheer technique. Luckily, it’s super beginner-friendly. “Feathered” makeup is marked by imperfect, blurred edges, and most makeup artists use their fingers to achieve this look. Sewell observed the subtle gradient of luminous blush into poreless skin and “bitten” lips all over the runways for 2026, and she expects it to be the next big thing this year.

The trick? Don’t be so precious about your placement. “Use your favorite lipstick on your cheek,” Sewell suggests, an “old-school” technique that offers a flushed, editorial look that never looks too exact. You can also achieve a feathered flush by “bringing your blush a bit higher on the face” or “sweeping it over the bridge of your nose for that soft, outdoor flush,” explains DeRoest.

This trend is perfectly aligned with the Nina Park makeup craze sweeping TikTok right now, where creators try to re-create the celebrity makeup artist’s softly blurred celebrity makeup look. To achieve her blurred lip-and-cheek look, stipple lipstick onto the center of your lips before buffing it past your natural lip line for a blurred, effortless vibe (very French, might I add). Sweep luminous highlighters on with a fluffy brush, swap your sharpened lip liners for lip brushes, and smudge your eyeliner to your heart’s content for this trend—it’s all about that watercolor blend.

Melted Matte Lips

“Another big shift for next year is the return of the strong lip,” says DeRoest. “After all the soft, barely there color trends, people are craving a little punch—something that feels powerful and crisp, even if the application is still diffused and effortless,” she adds. I won’t say I told you so, but I did call the return of 2016 makeup this summer after watching music’s It girls don cut creases, blinding highlighter, and of course, matte lipstick, during the summer music festival gambit. However, this doesn’t mean that you have to resurrect your sandpaper-dry liquid lipsticks from the King Kylie era.

Matte formulas have massively improved in the past 10 years, which means that these lippies are (usually) no longer dehydrating. However, the “melted matte” look offers a bit of peekaboo radiance for a healthy, skin-forward look. “Keep things unfussy but bold,” DeRoest advises. “Apply your color, then tap the edges with your finger so it feels lived-in and cool instead of too perfect. It’s such an easy way to modernize a strong lip.” The feathered finish meets the 2016 lip—the perfectly undone upgrade this trend deserves after a 10-year hiatus.

Maximalist Makeup

Zara Larsson and Sophia Sinot may be the 2026 whistleblowers, but maximalist makeup never really went anywhere—it’s just finally resurfacing after post-COVID years of “clean girl” beauty aesthetics. With the spring-slated release of Euphoria’s third season, we can expect an uptick in colorful, jewel-bedecked beauty looks as the year opens up—and with it new maximalist makeup trends that even we are not yet privy to.

The no-mascara trend is one that Schneider has been championing for years now, and the experts expect this movement to keep picking up steam in 2026. “I noticed a lot of no-makeup makeup with a lip and cheek stain, and no mascara [this past September],” Sewell recalls, reflecting on New York Fashion Week. Models at Sportmax S/S 26 and Pauline Dujancourt F/W 25, to name a few, popularized the blurred-pout and bare-lash look on runways, but the makeup artist is expecting a gradual trickle-down effect in the coming months (and she’s not talking about swapping black mascara for brown).

In an ideal world, I wouldn’t wear makeup at all. I love the idea of bare skin, freckles on show, and a face that looks exactly like it does first thing in the morning—just perhaps after a really good night’s sleep and a litre of water. As a beauty editor who loves "no makeup" makeup, I have a bone to pick with some skin tints and tinted SPFs. While I favour the lightweight and sheer coverage compared to foundation, I've noticed that it's often incredibly hard to find a good colour match. Some brands appear to shirk responsibility by claiming that their shades are "stretchable" due to their sheerness. And while I agree with them to a point, I can name the number of products that actually accurately match my skin tone seamlessly on one hand.

I've previously tried a couple of Dcypher's makeup products, where the brand creates a custom-mixed foundation or concealer to perfectly match your skin tone. If you're not already acquainted with Dcypher, then you'll be pleased to know the shade-matching process is so easy. On Dcypher's website, you'll be invited to take a makeup-free selfie in natural light. It takes quite literally seconds, during which it will scan your complexion and tell you your exact custom shade. This Skin Tone ID can then be used across Dcypher's products, should you want to try anything else, or re-order a top-up.

Because I had already tried the foundation and the concealer, I already had a Skin Tone ID, which was used to order the Custom Glow Booster. I was really impressed with the shade-match again, and it really blended into my skin to an almost undetectable effect. It looks like my skin, but with a better, dewy glow.

The Formula

The formula itself is lightweight, offering sheer coverage with a radiant, dewy finish. Because it's very sheer, it delivers a hint of coverage to even out the skin tone on its own. However, for blemishes or areas of redness, it might not be enough on its own to fully conceal them (you might want to try the Dcypher concealer for more targeted coverage). This month, my rosacea flared, and I had a smattering of hormonal breakouts, but it did a good job of evening my skin tone, while still letting my freckles on my nose peak through. It's perfect for those days when you don't want to wear a lot of makeup, but it can also be mixed in with your foundation for a more glowy finish, making it really versatile.

The Verdict

Having now used this over the past month, I'm really impressed with it. Because it matches my skin tone so well, it looks almost invisible on the skin, and the lightweight texture makes you feel like you're not wearing anything either. Of course, this might not be for you if you want more coverage like a traditional foundation, or favour a matte finish (this has a pearly glow), but for days when you want a perfecting veil, then I couldn't recommend it enough.

But those are truly the only words I can use to describe my own skin after testing a new foundation launch from Carisa Janes, the founder and CEO of Hourglass, which has one of my favorite skin tints of all time.

Introducing Outside In, Janes's latest brand venture inspired by warm, buttery natural light. Think speckles of sun filtering through a canopy of leaves or the soft golden hue drenching your morning sheets from a nearby window. If you've ever wanted skin like that, keep scrolling; the Silk Serum Foundation is practically synonymous with liquid gold.

The Formula

True to its name, Outside In's Silk Serum Foundation has a thin, serum-like consistency with a dewy—yet not too shiny!—finish. But unlike other serum foundations (which border on watery, in my opinion), this one has a supple, pillowy texture that doesn't ever feel too "messy." It's pumped with hero hydrators like niacinamide and hyaluronic acid, yet it doesn't leave behind an oily residue like so many other skincare-infused makeup formulas. Not to mention those heroes are included at functional doses, meaning the brand doesn't sprinkle them in just so it can slap on a "skin-improving" label (my pet peeve, TBH, and it happens more often than you'd think!). No, those ingredients have a potent enough concentration to actually make a difference in skin health—that is, hydration and smoothness.

That "serum" portion is impressive, but it's the superfine pigments that really make this foundation shine—ahem, literally. They diffuse upon application, instantly blurring the surface with the perfect level of glow, then self-set for all-day wear. Self-setting formulas usually lean matte, so I'm shocked to discover a dewy formula with this level of longevity. (Typically, glowy foundations melt off my face by midday!)

I'd say the dewy finish is Goldilocks (not too shiny, not too matte), but for those looking for a bit more radiance, Outside In also has a lightweight face oil—dubbed Floral Reserve—you can use as a glowy primer. Brimming with sweet almond, sunflower seed, meadowfoam seed, jojoba seed, and macadamia seed oils, the formula adds a healthy-looking sheen that easily peeks through your foundation with zero greasy residue.

The Application

As with all foundations, I like to dispense product on my hand, swirl it with a dense complexion brush until all the bristles are fully coated (a technique makeup artists love called "priming the brush"), then apply in light layers until I reach my desired level of coverage. Let me tell you this serum foundation was practically made for this process. Because the superfine pigments disperse across my skin with ease, I wind up using way less product than I would have originally thought. Two to three drops does the trick for my entire face—that's it! It helps that I use the brand's Serum Foundation Brush, which has soft, dense synthetic bristles that catch and release the pigment with ease.

My Results

With a less-is-more application, the Silk Serum Foundation precisely covers areas I want to disguise (dark spots and redness) without making it look like I'm wearing makeup at all—a balance I always seek out in my complexion products. I want people to compliment my skin, not my makeup, which, for the record, has happened multiple times since wearing this serum number out in public. It somehow makes my skin look like liquid silk—soft and smooth all over, yet dewy in the areas I want to shine. (Silk Serum is the perfect name for it, clearly!)

I took this photo right before heading to a work dinner. It was around 5 p.m., and the natural light was quickly waning from my apartment window. (No golden-hour light for me, sadly!) Still, you can see the noticeable highlight on my cheekbone, even though I'm only wearing a kiss of blush (Glow Recipe's Watermelon Glow Niacinamide Dewy Flush, if you're curious). I didn't even need to follow up with concealer; call it the witchcraft of Carisa Janes, but somehow my entire complexion remained buttery-smooth, plush, and—dare I say—lit from within.

While I’m sure each of us will have differing opinions of what constitutes the perfect foundation, from lightweight to full-coverage and dewy to matte finishes, there’s one thing I’m sure we can all agree on: a great base product will usually leave your complexion looking a little more even and a little less textured.

That’s not to say we should all be reaching for a full-coverage foundation at every opportunity. On the contrary, in my opinion, some of the most beautiful bases are those that still allow our natural skin to show through—these can even be tinted moisturisers. No matter your preference for type or finish, however, what a great base should offer is a little added polish, camouflaging imperfections, evening out your skin tone and making every day look (and feel) like a great skin day.

So, when I saw a new wave of foundations hitting the shelves, foundations which promised all of the above and came in a range of finishes to suit all foundation tastes, you better believe my beauty editor senses started tingling. Dubbed blurring foundations, these formulas promise not only to camouflage and conceal with a natural-looking, second-skin finish but also to leave the skin looking like it's in soft focus, too.

Of course, I ran out and got my hands on one at the first opportunity (Laura Mercier's Real Flawless Foundation, in case you were wondering), to put it to the test. The results? My usual dewy skin tints have been dismissed, and I now find myself reaching for some variation of a blurring foundation every day.

So, what exactly are blurring foundations, and what makes them so elite when it comes to finish and formulas? To find that out, I turned to an expert, international education and events manager at Laura Mercier, Karl Díaz-Hellín Hodson.

“Blurring foundations and tinted moisturisers create a natural, radiant complexion that looks effortlessly refined,” he told me. “With soft, buildable coverage, they don’t mask your skin; they enhance it. The result is a breathable, comfortably smooth and subtly luminous finish that looks like your skin, only better.”

I’m sure you’re beginning to see why blurring foundations have since become my go-to base of choice; however, if you need more convincing, I asked Díaz-Hellín Hodson to dive a little deeper…

What Is a Blurring Foundation?

“Blurring foundations are designed to soften the appearance of fine lines, pores and uneven texture by diffusing light across the face,” explains Díaz-Hellín Hodson.

So, what’s the difference between a blurring foundation and a matte foundation? “Both blurring and matte foundations are designed to perfect the complexion, but they achieve this in different ways,” he tells me. “Blurring foundations and tinted moisturisers create a luminous, skin-like finish by softly reflecting light. Matte foundations, on the other hand, are formulated to absorb excess oil and control shine, leaving a velvety finish that’s especially suited to oily or combination skin.”

Who Is a Blurring Foundation Best Suited For?

“Blurring foundations and tinted moisturisers are suitable for a wide range of skin types and concerns,” Díaz-Hellín Hodson told me. “They’re especially good foundations for mature skin, as their soft-focus effect helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles without settling into them. For those with textured or uneven skin, these formulas work to minimise the look of pores and smooth rough patches, creating a softly blurred, more even complexion. Plus, thanks to hydrating properties, blurring foundations are also ideal for normal to dry skin types, delivering a radiant glow with lightweight, comfortable coverage that lasts throughout the day.” The takeaway? Few won’t benefit from switching their traditional foundation for a blurring finish instead.

How to Apply a Blurring Foundation

“For the best results, start by prepping your skin with a hydrating primer,” Díaz-Hellín Hodson advises. “This enhances the smoothing effect. When it comes to application, the tool you choose makes a difference. For a softer, sheer finish, use a fluffy foundation brush or don’t be afraid to use your fingertips to apply. For more coverage and control, opt for a dense brush and apply in thin, buildable layers, focusing on areas that need extra blurring, like around the nose or cheeks. Lastly, to set the look without diminishing its glow, set your makeup with a translucent loose setting powder where needed, such as the T-zone.”

1. Kylie Cosmetics Skin Tint Blurring Elixir

One of the first lightweight blurring foundations that I got my hands on, Kylie Cosmetics Blurring Elixir, is still one of my favourites. The finish is light yet buildable, something that I look for in a foundation, and it doesn’t feel heavy or thick on the skin. Alongside the natural-looking pigment, the formula also contains hyaluronic acid, which works to hydrate as it covers. This not only makes this skin tint feel incredibly comfortable to wear but also ensures it applies smoothly and easily without clinging to any dry patches or leaving unwanted streaks. The finish is matte yet not masking—think skin that looks softly diffused and radiant.

2. Chanel Ultra Le Teint Velvet

Chanel’s blurring foundation may be at the more expensive end of the spectrum, but wow, it’s worth every penny. While many foundations claim a velvet-like finish, this is one of the only formulas I’ve tried that truly delivers on that claim. Smooth to apply and transforming into a blurred soft-matte finish on the skin, this is blurring foundation at its best. Blemishes appear less prominent, fine lines are camouflaged and skin looks calmed and even. My only wish is that there were more shades available, especially at the darker end of the spectrum, for even more accessibility.

3. Nars Soft Matte Complete Foundation

Now, I know I said blurring and matte foundations had different properties, but in my opinion, Nar’s Soft Matte foundation bridges the gap between the two. For that reason, it’s a great choice for oily skin types or those who want a full-matte finish while also wanting to achieve an airbrushed effect. As well as leaving skin shine-free for up to 16 hours (something I can vouch for, as I often wear this during long days in the office), it also softly blurs and camouflages as it covers. While the finish is described as full coverage, I’d actually describe this as medium to full, as it can be sheered out or built up, as you desire. Personally, I love this foundation layered over an illuminating primer for a little added radiance.

4. Laura Mercier Real Flawless Foundation

If you spend any time online or on social media, especially in the beauty sphere, I can guarantee you’ll have heard of Laura Mercier’s Real Flawless Foundation. The blurring formula went viral in early 2024, famed for its ability to leave skin with a filter-like finish in real life. In action, it does just that, blending and concealing seamlessly for a seriously seamless look. My only word of warning: build up light layers rather than going in heavy on first swipe to keep things looking natural.

5. Iconic London Super Smoother Blurring Skin Tint

Another lightweight option, Iconic’s Blurring Skin Tint offers a little more coverage than Kylie Cosmetics' base, yet still sits firmly in the skin tint family. For me, this is the perfect everyday foundation: lightweight, natural-looking, yet offering a "my skin, but better" finish. Once again, the shade range sadly needs some increasing; however, on all other fronts, this is a winner.

6. Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Foundation

Blending skincare and makeup in one, Charlotte Tilbury’s newly reformulated airbrush foundation is a full coverage, blurring foundation perfected. The formula is infused with powder particles, which blur and prevent shine, while Charlotte’s phyto youth technology also works to target visible signs of ageing. It’s also designed to move with your skin, so it won’t go cakey throughout the day or settle into any fine lines that may become more prominent. And the finish? Airbrushed doesn’t even begin to describe it.

7. Rimmel London Kind & Free Mattifying Skin Tint

Priced at under £10, Rimmel’s blurring foundation is one of the best affordable options available if you’re looking for an entry point into blurring formulas. Available in 20 shades, which span from porcelain to espresso, the lightweight skin tint softly evens out skin texture and tone with a natural-looking matte finish. Plus, it’s also infused with vitamin E to hydrate and soothing botanicals to calm and soothe, so you can rest assured this isn’t just camouflaging your skin but working to improve it, too.

8. Benefit The Porefessional Smoothing + Blurring Matte Foundation

If you’ve ever shopped for a pore-minimising primer, you’ll have most likely come across Benefit’s Porefessional. The velvet-smooth primer became the go-to for oily-skinned girls like myself in the 00s, leaving skin blurred and prepped to perfection, ready for any makeup that followed. This year, the brand created the perfect second step in that routine, the Porefessional foundation, a smoothing and blurring formula which draws upon the properties of their primer alongside a medium, buildable pigment. On the skin, it blends easily, working to camouflage but not cover, while niacinamide works below the surface to further smooth skin over time. Will your pores disappear instantly? No, but will they look smoother and less prominent after use? Most definitely.

9. Anastasia Beverly Hills Impeccable Blurring Second Skin Matte Foundation

Lastly, we have Anastasia Beverly Hills’ Blurring Second Skin Foundation. A great option for oily skin types, it’s a medium-to-full coverage, which blurs pores and imperfections while also minimising shine. Throughout the day, it wears beautifully on my skin, becoming slightly more radiant with minimal slipping or sliding. In comparison, however, I have heard that on dry skin, it can settle a little into fine lines that arise throughout the day, so keep this in mind to ensure it’ll work for you.

In preparation for writing this article, it was important to me to ensure I’d put every foundation included well and truly through its paces. Whether it was a formula I’d used and loved for years, or a new launch I’d recently added to my makeup collection, I revisited them all, comparing each one to ensure it could be named one of the best blurring foundations. I sometimes feel like working as a beauty editor is like slipping on an alter ego post-school run. Almost everyone I know in every walk of life has been embracing a more simplistic approach to beauty in recent years. Yet here’s the truth of it for me: while an easier easier makeup routine has been inspired by necessity, I can’t say that I ever feel truly polished when I step out the door with natural skin. You see, as someone who deals consistently with acne breakouts, when my skin is really acting up, I crave the finish that a full foundation once gave me. But there is a solution. What Is a Foundcealer?

“Whether you are strapped for time or just want to simplify your routine, finding a concealer that doubles as a base can be a game changer,” explains celebrity makeup artist Tania Grier. Simply put, a foundcealer is effectively a multitasking concealer that can be used for selected coverage exactly where you need it, rather than covering every inch of your face with foundation. How To Use a Foundcealer

As someone who has very little skill in the makeup application department, I was slightly concerned that a foundcealer may require too much precision for me. However, they are delightfully easy to use. “In most cases, you’ll want to just apply a little to the under eye area, plus a dot on the cheeks, chin and forehead,” explains Grier. “You can then spread it out quickly using your fingers or a soft concealer brush.” If you do have areas like spots or rosacea then Grier suggests taking a moment to “spot check” the skin. “Just apply a small amount to blemishes, redness or pigmentation to create the same effect as a foundation would, but with a quicker turnaround as you’re using less product.”

What to Look for In a Foundcealer

The most important thing when choosing a foundcealer is getting the right shade, as you’ll need a tone that works on various areas of the skin and many of us naturally have fluctuations in tone and colour on our face. “Test the colour by applying it to the under eyes to see how it fares on dark circles before blending it out into the cheeks,” advises Grier. “It should complement the skin like a sheer foundation would.”

Next, it’s the texture to consider. “It needs to blend well and not feel dry,” says Grier. It’s also important to note that if you are used to wearing a more classic medium to full base then you will want to seek out a foundcealer with a little more pigment to make sure that you get that coverage. “Especially if you have rosacea, acne or sun damage, you’ll want something that genuinely conceals,” explains Grier.

In fact, the last time I wore it myself, I forgot I had makeup on at all. Yet somehow it builds like a dream, reaching a beautiful, medium coverage that looks immaculate for well over 12 hours—perfect for long days on set, if you're Cardi, or a jam-packed workday, if you're me. If you're familiar with Milk Makeup's oil- and silicone-free Hydro Grip Primer (a WWW-editor favorite!), then you know how well it sinks into skin, sets, and makes your foundation look like silk—not a crease in sight. That sentence alone should stop you in your tracks and make you virtually sprint to your nearest Violet Grey or Bluemercury, especially if you're familiar with the two brands' last collab—a creamy concealer pen—which the WWW beauty team considered a highlight launch of 2025. That buzzy pen has a dreamy consistency, flawless application, and a no-crease formula that instantly disguises dark circles and smooths fine lines. It's one of my favorite concealers, period—but dare I say the new Foundation Drops are even more impressive?

I put a pre-launch sample to the test before its official September 3 debut, and all I can say is wow. The glow is unmatched, and I have the photos to prove it.

This is an Augustinus Bader collab, so you know the foundation does not skimp on skin-improving players. As I mentioned up top, the formula features the brand's signature TFC8 technology, a potent blend of vitamins, lipids, and peptides to support cell renewal and slow the signs of natural skin aging. Other MVPs include echinacea purpurea extract, a botanical that has skin-plumping properties; olive leaf extract to strengthen the moisture barrier; and spilanthes extract to smooth skin texture (some even claim the ingredient has a Botox-like effect).

In terms of the formula's consistency, it's very thin and serum-like (hence, the name Foundation Drops), instantly fusing to the skin upon application. That breathable texture somehow covers all my discoloration and blemishes without appearing too cakey, which, for what it's worth, is a pretty impressive feat. A featherlight formula that actually provides enough coverage feels like folklore, but Beckham's Foundation Drops contain suspended pigments specifically created for this very purpose; they diffuse textural concerns while allowing your natural complexion to peek through, "almost like looking through layers of mesh," per the brand.

I personally like to apply the product on the back of my hand (the nozzle tip makes it easy to dispense a precise amount of pigment), then swirl a dense foundation brush on my makeshift palette, making sure to thoroughly coat each bristle ("priming the brush," as celebrity MUA Katie Jane Hughes calls it). This technique makes it easier to control the product, ensuring a smooth, natural-looking finish every time. The Foundation Drops already fuse to skin like magic, but trust me, priming the brush beforehand makes the serum-like pigment appear truly flawless. Plus, I can easily build up the coverage as opposed to globbing on too much pigment in the beginning.

I usually stick to skin tints for my everyday makeup looks, and I find that just one layer of foundation gives me a similar skin-like effect—velvety-smooth where I struggle with uneven texture, dewy in the places I want to shine. The subtle blurring effect is certainly noticeable, but in a way that doesn't look like I'm wearing any makeup at all. In fact, I've had multiple friends tell me that my skin—not my makeup, an important distinction!—looks unreal.

Then came the real wear test: an outdoor wedding. I knew the Foundation Drops were sublime for a low-key work day, but would they measure up when it came to all-night glam? After applying a few more layers of foundation (again, using the back-of-the-hand method), I am happy to report that the answer is a resounding yes. Those blurring effects became even stronger, though the coverage remained lightweight. I did follow up with concealer on more noticeable blemishes, but the overall glam remained immaculate under the late-August sun and as I danced (and danced) the night away.

That $110 price tag is certainly nothing to scoff at, but if you do have the ability to splurge on designer-quality makeup, I'm willing to bet it'll become your number one pick. I personally haven't worn any other base product since adding it to my makeup bag—well, except for the equally dreamy VBB concealer pen, which will forever have a space in my heart. Great news: The Foundation Drops were made to complement the 19 shades of the beloved Concealer Pen, so using them together is a recipe for smooth, "butter" skin. The Formula

Powered by Augustinus Bader’s TFC8® technology, this foundation focuses on rejuvenating the skin and supporting the complexion's natural renewal process. In fact, it's the first all-over complexion product that features TFC8®, so it really is a skincare-first formulation.

It has an incredibly lightweight, serum-like feel that melts into the skin like butter, and is easily buildable depending on your desired finish. Adding a hit of hydration and natural luminosity to the complexion, the pigments work to diffuse imperfections while allowing your natural skin texture to shine through. This is probably the best product I have ever tried for that "your skin, but better" effect. As described by Beckham herself, it's a foundation that feels like nothing, yet somehow does everything.

The Shades

There are currently 19 flexible shades on offer. While it's not the biggest shade range on the market, the product does cater to a wide range of skin tones and undertones, and has been designed to complement the brand's concealer. That being said, more shades in the future would definitely be a plus.

I personally opted for shade 5, a lighter hue with neutral warm undertones. I found that this worked perfectly with my skin tone and gave me that second-skin finish I was after.

The Packaging

I wouldn't normally comment on a foundation's packaging, but I felt that this product deserved a special shoutout. Housed in a chic black bottle with Augustinus Bader's signature blue shade adorning the lid, this is definitely the most fashionable foundation I have tried.

Plus, the streamlined dispenser allows you to apply the foundation drops onto the back of your hand or straight onto the skin for a mess-free finish.

The Results

I'm sure it's obvious by now, but I am a huge fan of this foundation. I have combination skin and often struggle to find a formula that is hydrating enough without being overly shiny. In my opinion, this product strikes the perfect balance between natural luminosity and a nourishing finish.

Another element that really stood out to me when testing this product is how it managed to create a subtle blurring effect while making it feel as if I was wearing nothing on my skin. Usually, when I try skincare makeup hybrids, I find that they either lean too much into the skincare category and don't offer much coverage, or they lean too much into the makeup category and don't actually feel as if they are benefiting my complexion. Once again, this foundation found that perfect middle ground, making my skin look and feel good all at the same time.

While I personally couldn't find any faults with this foundation, one thing I do have to mention is the price. At £104 for 30ml, this product is not cheap. You could argue that the high price point is to be expected due to the luxury names behind the formulation, but it's certainly not the sort of product I would buy on a whim. There are more affordable foundations on the market, but if you're looking for a high-end addition to your makeup bag that truly delivers on all of its promises, I recommend adding this to the top of your wishlist.

As a young teen, I was always hesitant to try makeup. At the time, I was a much bigger fan of all things skincare. Even now, I tell people that if I had $500 to spend, I'd use 80% of it on skincare before I even look down the makeup aisle of a beauty store. How I Used the Live Tinted Huestick Complexion Stick

Using the complexion stick was straightforward. I knew I wanted to create a golden hour-inspired glowy finish, so I started by prepping my skin with the Tatcha Dewy Milk Moisturizer (which I’ve reviewed extensively as well). I did my brows while I let the formula absorb before applying a small amount of concealer under my eyes, around my nose, and over any blemishes that were popping up.

Then, I reached for my complexion stick in shade 11 and began the application process. Side note: It typically takes me a while to get a shade matched because of my olive skin tone, but it literally took less than three minutes to find the perfect shade. I was genuinely shocked. I swiped the product across my cheeks, down my nose and chin, and across my forehead and temples. I went in with my Elaina Badro foundation brush and gently worked the product into my skin, making sure to really blend everything out for a smooth and even finish.
